A popular summer destination because of its stunning cliff views and colorful towns, Cinque Terre is actually a great place to visit year-round, as the mild weather means the area is mostly always warm and inviting.

When planning a trip to Cinque Terre , the best transportation option depends on how fast you want to get there, what your budget is, and what time of the year you're traveling - some of the ferry options only run during peak season, so water travel might be limited or just impossible outside that time frame.

This is the best way to truly appreciate Cinque Terre, looking up from the turquoise waters towards the most iconic highlight of the area: the tangle of pastel buildings high up on the cliffs. The ferry ends the trip at La Spezia, where you'll find your driver waiting to drive you back to Milan.

2. From Milan to Cinque Terre by Train

The easiest and most convenient way to reach Cinque Terre on your own is to take the train. All trains depart from Milano Centrale railway station several times per day, and you can pick between two different destinations: Monterosso or La Spezia .

Monterosso is the first of the five villages that make up Cinque Terre, and it's the closest to Milan. Only local commuter trains travel to this station, and you can't reserve a seat, so things can get crowded during high season. You can find direct trains on this route, while others might require a transfer along the way - direct trains are your best choice because of speed, as they'll reach their destination in just under three hours.

Monterosso has a large beach right outside the train station, so you can simply stay here and start exploring. If your final destination is another one of the villages, you can catch the 5 Terre Express train, a connecting local train that runs every 15 minutes throughout the day and reaches the other villages in just a few minutes. You can buy a hop-on-hop-off travel card at the station that will allow you to use the train for an entire day to move between villages.

Your other option is to take a train from Milan to La Spezia , a larger city that sits next to the villages. Because La Spezia is a transfer point for many lines, you'll find more frequent trains to this destination. Once here, you can switch to a regional train that goes to one of the villages.

If you're up for some adventure, it's also possible to hike from one village to the next, as Cinque Terre National Park, which surrounds the villages, offers plenty of picturesque trails that crisscross through the wilderness.

If you've arrived by train to Monterosso, you can hike directly to the next village, Vernazza. The hike is only three kilometers long but it's steep and difficult, as you're walking on winding narrow mountain trails and slippery rocks. You'll have to climb 550 steps along the way as well - but you'll be rewarded with great open views of the bay along the way.

3. From Milan to Cinque Terre by Train and Ferry

A great option if you're visiting Cinque Terre during spring and summer is to cover the first part of your journey via train and then jump on a ferry. The easiest way to do this is to take a train to La Spezia first. From here, boat trips leave towards Cinque Terre twice a day between April and September, with more frequent boats during the months of July and August.

The ferries take just over two hours to reach their final destination at Monterosso, making stops at Portovenere, Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Vernazza along the way. You can get off at any of the stops and then find your way to the other villages via the connecting train or by hiking through the national park.

Tickets for the ferry cannot be reserved in advance, so arrive early in the day to get yours.

4. From Milan to Cinque Terre by Car

It takes about the same time to take the train than to drive from Milan to Cinque Terre – a three-hour ride that covers about 230 kilometers if you take the shortest route and close to 400 kilometers on a different road. The train has one big advantage, though: you get to your destination easily and don't have to worry about dealing with a car in a place that's not exactly car-friendly.

Cinque Terre is made up of narrow roads with sharp curves that make driving quite challenging. Parking is also very difficult, as the historical centers are off-limits for cars, and you'll have to park outside the city center in one of the designated paid parking areas.

If you decide you still want to drive, make sure you rent a small car to help you maneuver the difficult cliff roads.

From Milan, you can take the A7 (if you're heading to Levanto or Monterosso) or A1 (if you're going to La Spezia or Riomaggiore) highways. Both are toll roads, so have cash or a credit card ready to pay as you exit the road. Cost is based on how long you drive on the highway, but it shouldn't be too expensive unless you take lots of side trips along the way.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely not. Here’s why I don’t recommend it:

• Count at least 3h to get from Milan to Cinque Terre
• And 3h from Cinque Terre to Milan
• Add the commute in Milan to go from and to your place
• –> You won’t have that much time to visit the Cinque Terre

It’s much better to get 2 days in Cinque Terre, or at least one full day. If you’re up for the challenge, or if you truly only have 1 day as part of your Italy itinerary and want to make the most of it, go for it.

The first option we’re looking at to travel from Milan to Cinque Terre is the train. It’s the fastest option, and it makes for a very easy trip.

There are 2 main trains that will take you to Cinque Terre, and which one you take depends on where you’ll be staying:

• Milan to Monterosso al Mare : this takes you straight to one of the 5 villages. It’s great if you’re on a day trip, or if you’re staying in Cinque Terre .
• Milan to La Spezia : La Spezia is right outside Cinque Terre, and it’s the perfect home base to explore the Cinque Terre for cheap accommodation or to escape the crowds.

Once you get into Monterosso or La Spezia, you’ll need to take the Cinque Terre express, the regional train that goes to all 5 of the Cinque Terre villages. Find the schedule of the regional train and more details on this page .

Whether you choose to take the train to Monterosso or to La Spezia, it takes basically the same time and costs about the same.

Here are the details:

Train Milan / Cinque Terre – Monterosso Al Mare or La Spezia

⏱ Time: 3h (direct train) to 5h (change in Genoa, Parma or Levanto)

There are several trains per hour, but only a few direct trains. Make sure to book early to secure your seat, especially if you’re traveling in summer because train tickets get booked out insanely early in advance.

If you can’t find any train tickets left, don’t worry: the Milan – Cinque Terre train is not the only way to reach the coastal villages!

As an alternative of taking the train to Cinque Terre, you can take the bus. While the bus is not as fast as the direct train, it’s around the same travel time than the other trains with changes. Oh and it’s also cheaper!

The main drawback to this transportation method is the frequency. There is a very limited amount of buses per day, from 1 to 4 max.

Once in La Spezia , you’ll have to catch the regional train to the Cinque Terre villages, which takes about 10 minutes.

If you don’t want to depend on public transportation to get around, you can choose to drive from Milan to Cinque Terre, and the other way around from Cinque Terre to Milan.

You can leave at any time of day (or even night), and you can easily carry heavy luggage with you, which is harder by train. It’s also easier if you have toddlers and don’t want to struggle with your stroller in the train.

However, there are many drawbacks to driving there:

• traffic can get pretty bad, especially in summer
• you can’t actually drive inside the villages, so you’ll have to leave your car on the road outside the villages and walk there
• driving between the villages is on narrow mountain roads and they get extremely crowded in summer
• parking spots can be hard to find, make sure your hotel has a parking lot

Renting a car or simply driving to Cinque Terre from Milan is way more expensive than the train or the bus, but it can be interesting if you’re 3, as the cost will be split among all members of the group.

And finally, the last option is to go on a Cinque Terre tour from Milan. This is the most expensive option, but it’s also the most hands-off one. Just book your tour , and you’re done. You won’t have to worry about all the logistics of planning the trip: when do we leave, do we take the train or the bus, do we go to Monterosso or La Spezia, which villages do we visit, …

Simply show up to the departure point, and let yourself be carried along on this tour.

Can I park easily in Cinque Terre?

As said earlier on this post, you can drive from Milan to the Cinque Terre, but you cannot drive to the Cinque Terre as the villages are closed to cars. You’ll need to park at one of the train stations at Levanto, Monterosso, Riomaggiore, or La Spezia. In any case, you’ll need to take the train to travel from one village to another once parked.

Parking in Cinque Terre for a few days will definitely cost you while you won’t be able to use your car. Depending on your travel style (i.e. whether you’re doing a road trip or not), you should consider not using a car.

Peak summer is incredibly popular but very crowded. For fewer tourists, ideal weather and lower rates, I suggest visiting during shoulder season – May/June or September/October.

The Cinque Terre region essentially shuts down over the winter from November to early March when heavy rainfall can happen. Many businesses close and boat/hiking options become limited.

Where To Stay

I wholeheartedly suggest staying in La Spezia , the closest city to Cinque Terre. It offers easier access but is much more affordable than staying in the five villages themselves.

One idea can be taking a day trip from Milan to hike the famous trails in Cinque Terre.  You may find yourself charmed by these little seaside towns, like Monterosso, and decide to spend a few extra days there! Whether you’re going for one day or a few days, the train is the best way to get there.

It is best to take a train to any of the towns in Cinque Terre because once you arrive, you can’t drive into or park in the center of the towns themselves. It’s far easier and less confusing to take the train.

Frequent Trains from Milan to C i nque Terre-Monterosso

You can take the train to Milano Centrale , the city's main train station, to the Monterosso train station in Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five towns in the Cinque Terre region. Half of the day's 14 trains are a direct route, and the other half have one connection in Levanto.

There is a direct route from Milano Centrale to Monterosso. This route goes through Levanto and you will have to switch to a regional train . The trip takes approximately three hours regardless of which itinerary you choose, and tickets cost $31-32.

Note that weekends and holidays typically mean less frequent service and sometimes longer travel times.

Monterosso al Mare is the largest of the five Cinque Terre towns, and of those towns, Monterosso has the biggest train station. In addition to the slow trains that run through Cinque Terre, Monterosso also has service from faster trains coming into the region from places like Milan or Rome. The station is in the town center, and you can take a local bus or walk to where you need to go from there. Levanto station also includes a bar, bathrooms, and a ticket desk.

Cinque Terre day trip from Milan

The tour will begin with your private driver collecting you from your hotel in Milan (another custom location in the area can be agreed) with a luxury sedan or minivan, and after 3.5H drive you will reach Manarola, one of the “Five Lands”, namely “ Cinque Terre ”.

Upon arrival in Manarola, you will meet your licensed private guide who will lead you through this beautiful town. Your tour will proceed through the narrow pebbled streets, bringing you to the rocky cove surrounded by colorful buildings.

From Manarola, you will take a train/ferry for a short ride to Vernazza. Enjoy the ancient fortress used to protect the town for centuries from pirates and visit the domed church dedicated to Santa Margherita d’Antiochia. During the tour, accordingly to the itinerary and your tour guide suggestions, you can have lunch and taste the flavors of the regions.

From Vernazza, you will then depart by train/ferry and reach our last stop, the beautiful village of Monterosso. The tour will then conclude with a transfer back to your hotel in Milan or other desired location.

Please note that the towns of Cinque Terre cannot be toured by car! You will visit the different villages together with your private guide (about 4H private tour) by train or boat (boat service is suspended during Autumn/Winter season and in case of bad sea conditions). Your chauffeur will take you from Milan to Manarola and then will pick you up again in Monterosso to drive back to Milan.

What is Cinque Terre

Just a little lesson on “The Cinque Terre:” The name actually defines an area consisting of 5 villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The Cinque Terre is a national park and a UNESCO world heritage site. Vehicles are highly restricted in these towns.

But this leaves the villages so well preserved and this is what gives them their charm and ability to make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time 200 years, to a simpler, more idealistic version of Italy, and it’s simply charming!

When to Go to Cinque Terre

The high season in Cinque Terre is generally April-October. We were there at the end of April over a weekend and it was definitely busy, but not unbearable! Although I usually advise off-season travel, you’ll want to go to Cinque Terre during the warmer months to be able to enjoy all the area has to offer, such as beaches, hiking and wandering streets without being cold or wet. I think the tradeoff is worth the crowds. I would definitely shoot for shoulder season though, like April, May, September or October, so the crowds aren’t quite as bad, but you still get great weather!

You can also do a Cinque Terre day trip, but honestly, it’s best to see these beautiful towns for at least a few days and experience them by staying in them and walking the stairs to your house.

I’ve also heard rumors that Cinque Terre is going to start issuing tourist permits for the summer months . So if you’re looking to go during that time, be sure to check on that first, before booking anything.

How to Get to Cinque Terre

Where is Cinque Terre? This beautiful region is located in Northwestern Italy not too far from Florence. Getting to Cinque Terre can be really easy or really difficult depending on how you arrive. The closest airport to Cinque Terre will be Pisa.  Traveling to Cinque Terre by train   is the easiest way to get there. You can take the train from Florence to Cinque Terre for a day trip or from Pisa, Milan , Venice , Rome , or anywhere really! I suggest purchasing a ticket to whichever of the Cinque Terre towns you are staying in. 

Here are the times and prices to Cinque Terre from other major cities in Italy*:

• Florence to Cinque Terre: 2.5 hours, $25 USD
• Pisa to Cinque Terre: 1.5 hours, $16 USD
• Milan to Cinque Terre: 4 hours, $30 USD
• Venice to Cinque Terre: 6 hours, $40 USD
• Rome to Cinque Terre: 5 hours, $40 USD

* These are averages to Cinque Terra as of May 2019

The trains in Italy are affordable and efficient. In fact, Italy is probably the only country that I prefer train travel vs. driving. You just have to know what you’re doing and learn from my own costly mistakes!

Cinque terre as a day trip.

Of course, I always think longer is better anywhere you visit, but it is possible to do Cinque Terre as a day trip from several destinations. You can take the train, but there are many great tours that will organize this for you which is probably best if you only have one day.

Florence is the most popular place to take a day trip to Cinque Terre and this tour offers a complete package with a live tour guide to walk you through each location in this beautiful area. I sometimes dislike tours, especially because I have rowdy children who are unpredictable, but if you only have one day to see something that should really require 7 days, I think having a guide is extremely helpful! Cinque Terre from the Water

If you want to see the coastline of Cinque Terre, which is absolutely incredible, you’ll want to take a boat tour to see it all. This tour offers an all-day tour up and down the coast and they also serve you a homemade Ligurian meal! Eating pasta with that view?! What could be better? You can book the tour here. 

Where to Stay in Cinque Terre

I kind of showed up to the area with my four kids blind, without a game plan, without really doing any research, except or “where to stay in Cinque Terre” when trying to decide which town to book a house in.  Thankfully, that search did not lead me astray. We decided on staying in Riomaggiore, largely because the pictures looked amazing and it was the most affordable place I could find!

We love using VRBO and have stayed in hundreds of different houses, apartments, boats, and treehouses over the years.    Our apartment was located a few blocks from the Riomaggiore Cinque Terre train station, straight uphill (as most places in Cinque Terre will be), nestled just above a shop that sold everything lemon-scented, with the most incredible view out the windows. You can find the  apartment that we stayed in here. 

You really can’t go wrong staying in any of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre. They are all very close together and easily accessible by a 5-minute train, by ferry, or by hiking. When searching for where to stay in Cinque Terre , be sure that the apartment, B&B, or hotel is actually in one of the five cities. Look on a map! I think staying in La Spezia is just fine, but if you actually want to be in the Cinque Terre, you’ll need to stay in one of the five villages.

I’ve had several people ask me if they should stay in a different town every night, or spread their trip out between the five villages, but there’s really no need. Pick a good home base and explore from there. The 5 towns of Cinque Terre are so close together that you can definitely enjoy every town without staying there.

Our Favorite Things to do in Cinque Terre

There’s enough to keep you busy in Cinque Terre for a week, so I would recommend staying as long as you can. Here are some of our favorite Cinque Terre activities:

Go Swimming

Cinque Terre lies along the coast and you can find lots of great beaches throughout the area. The sandy beaches can be found in the northernmost town of Monterosso al Mar, while the other towns have mostly rocky beaches.

Cinque Terre is a hugely popular destination for hikers. There are multiple trails that you can hike between the five towns and the views are absolutely incredible. The best part is that you can stop for gelato in each town between trails.

Try Local Cuisine

You won’t. go hungry in Cinque Terre. There is plenty of great local food to be found and since its directly on the ocean, you’ll find some of the most incredible seafood in Italy here. You can check out more classic Cinque Terre food in our food guide.

The Five Cinque Terre Towns from North to South

To help you decide where to stay in Cinque Terre, I’ve broken the region down by town including descriptions, pros and cons,  as well as the best place to stay in Cinque Terre in each town.

Monterosso al Mare

I think that Monterosso is the best place to stay in Cinque Terre if you are looking for beach time with young kids. It’s the only one of the Cinque Terre villages that has a large white sandy beach with calm waters. 

• Lots of big, sandy beaches
• Flatter than the other towns

Affordable Monterosso Airbnbs

• Small, narrow streets
• Several small beaches
• Picturesque

Affordable Vernazza Airbnbs

• High up on a hill
• Requires a bus ride or hike up 400+ stairs from the train station
• The Cinque Terre Ferry does not come here
• Beautiful narrow and picturesque streets

Affordable Corniglia Airbnbs

• Probably the most photographed city. If you see a recognizable photo of Cinque Terre, it’s probably of Manarola.
• Bigger than Vernazza
• Rocky Beaches
• Lots of restaurants

• In my opinion, I think this is the best town to stay in Cinque Terre
• A wider main street, lined with hilltop houses on either side
• Lots of stairs to get to the upper levels of the city
• Great restaurants

Getting Around Cinque Terre

Getting around Cinque with kids was pretty easy! There are three main ways to navigate Cinque Terre:

Cinque Terre by Train

Monterosso – Vernazza: 4 minutes

Vernazza – Corniglia: 4 minutes

Corniglia – Manarola: 5 minutes

Manarola – Riomaggiore: 6 minutes

Accessibility

Cinque Terre is a region full of hilly villages made up of levels built upon levels and connected by thousands of stairs! This doesn’t mean that if you need wheelchair access that you shouldn’t go. The best town to visit in Cinque Terre with a wheelchair or other accessibility needs would be Monterosso. It is the flatter of the villages and it generally has fewer stairs.

Strollers in Cinque Terre

I would not recommend bringing a stroller to Cinque Terre. As mentioned above, the area is covered with stairs and you’ll likely have a good stair climb just to get to your apartment. A baby carrier might be a good option instead.

Cinque Terre Beaches

There are several beautiful Cinque Terre beaches in the area, but these are my favorites, from North to South:

• Monterosso Beach: Located in Monterosso al Mar, this is the largest and sandiest beach in Cinque Terre.
• Old Town Monterosso Beach: Located in the older part of Monterosso and the second largest beach in Cinque Terre
• Vernazza Beach: This beach is a little tricky to get to. You have to walk through a cave, but the beauty and seclusion of this spot is worth it. Last time I went there was a “do not cross” tape that everyone seemed to be crossing. 
• Manarola Beach: A rocky harbor beach in one of the most popular Cinque Terre towns.
• Riomaggiore Beach: This rocky beach is lined with cliffs that are popular with jumpers. 

The Best Things to do in Cinque Terre

Now that you’ve gotten yourself to there, know where to stay, and know how to get around, you’re ready to decide what to do in Cinque Terre.

• Visit All Five Cinque Terre Towns: Don’t go to Cinque Terre without visiting every city! They are each unique and beautiful in their own way, with a different feel to each town.
• Visit Churches: There are churches in every town and they are all old and beautiful! Go in and light a candle, say a prayer and catch a quiet moment in a bustling town.
• Go to the Beach: Cinque Terre lies along the coast with stunning sandy and rocky beaches. Most of the sandy beaches are in Monterosso, which is speckled with colorful umbrellas and beautiful rocks. There is a really fun beach in Vernazza that is accessed by a little tunnel in the cliff. If you’re into rock jumping, then Riomaggiore will have the beaches for you.
• Enjoy the Food: Cinque Terre is covered with tasty restaurants offering traditional Italian cuisine. You usually can’t go wrong. We loved Bar Centrale in Riomaggiore. Try some fresh fish wherever you go. Mine was caught the same morning and was huge! You can also find fried calamari around every corner. Pesto and Foccacia are famous in this region and definitely worth trying! Most restaurants in Cinque Terre are open and have outdoor seating, which I find to be more comfortable when dining with children. There are also crepe shops, bruschetta, and focaccia shops that make a good quick lunch or snack for kids.
• Go for a Hike:  There are several great hikes between the five towns and other hikes as well. Read this for more information on hiking Cinque Terre. 

There is so much to do in Cinque Terre, but with the ease of transport within the region, it can be done quickly. Be sure to take time to relax and just soak it all in!

What did you enter on Trenitalia’s website? Did you enter Milano Centrale as you boarding site? What did you enter as where you want to go in CT?

If you use the Trenitalia official website, select the destinations and date but choose an early departure time in the drop down box - you will then be shown the full days trains. Note that there are only a few trains that do not require a change of train ( the 8.05 am requires no change) and it only stops at Monterosso before travelling to La Spezia - depending on which village you want to visit you may need to get off at Monterosso and catch the next regional train to one of the other villages.

I put Milano centrale to monterosso. There are only evening trains showing up. Which other station do you recommend I try? It’s for May 4

OK - on May 4th I can see trains from Milano Centrale to Monterosso at 6.10am, 6.25am, 7.25am, 8.05am, 8.30am, 9.10am, 9.30am ...... etc. Of those, only the 6.10am and the 8.05am do not require a change of train.

Please note that the Trenitalia webpage defaults the time search to the time in your location when you are searching - so if I am searching their site at 12 midday I will only see trains after that time on the day I have chlsen - you need to alter the time of departure, next to the date, to early morning to see all trains on that day.
