It’s probably (well, definitely ) somewhat of an understatement to say Collective Soul frontman and chief songwriter Ed Roland is unwaveringly driven in his desire to double down on doing more of what he does best — making music, sweet music, both in the studio and onstage.

“People ask me if I have a hobby, but for me, it’s just music,” Roland confirms. “I mean, I don’t know what else to do, because that’s what I love to do. I live in the studio — but then the time comes when I go, ‘Well, now I wanna go play live.’ I just love the creation of music, and the process of finding out what’s gonna happen with it next. That kinda defines it all for me.”

In following his ever-tenacious muse, Roland is always looking to connect with his current Collective Soul bandmates any which way he can. Actually, the word current is a bit of a misnomer, since Roland truly believes the Collective Soul of the here and now is as permanently intertwined as any group of musicians he’s ever worked with over the course of his illustrious career. “It’s worth noting See What You Started by Continuing was really the demo for this band as it stands right now,” Roland points out, referring to the 2015 album that realigned the rock quintet’s creative compass. “I mean, this is the band for the rest of my life. This is it , man.”

Indeed, if a) 2015’s aforementioned See What You Started by Continuing was the reset blueprint for how a revamped and revitalized five-man lineup fully gels as a unit, and b) 2019’s Blood was the ensuing coagulant further infused by an in-tune rock ensemble clearly firing on all corpuscles, then c) Collective Soul’s upcoming, long-awaited 2022 album release Vibrating simply sends the band’s artistic spirit into the next stratosphere.

“Our fans have already picked up on that,” agrees Roland, “because they’ve been waiting for Vibrating for almost three years now — and I can’t wait for them to hear it. They’re excited because both See What You Started and Blood set such a high standard for where we’re going as a band — and it’s only going to continue getting better with Vibrating . I really do believe that.”

You can believe it too, for the proof lies within the new album’s deeply delineated grooves. Fact is, Vibrating positively pulsates with the boundless energy that has been Collective Soul’s aural calling card for going on three full decades. From the propulsively gnarly kiss-off of “Cut the Cord” to the reflective midtempo jangle of “Take” to the heart-wrenching reality check of “Rule #1” — replete with a soaring string section, no less! — to the choir-backed emotional crossroads of “Where Do I Go,” Vibrating contains 42 minutes of irrefutable sonic evidence of a band wholly uninterested in sitting still. “I think we’re on a roll,” observes Roland. “We’re not afraid to stretch the boundaries — but we do know how to stay in our lane when we need to. Sometimes, though, we just have to go faster .”

The next logical acceleratory step, of course, resides in taking Vibrating out on the road where the band belongs, and test-driving how this electrifying new material meshes with indelible Collective Soul setlist classics like “Shine,” “December,” “The World I Know,” “Gel,” “AYTA,” “Why, Pt. 2,” “Precious Declaration,” and “Heavy” — in addition to more recent, Blood-spawned tracks like “Right as Rain,” “Observation of Thoughts,” and “Over Me.”

“We’re ready to go,” declares Roland. “Most of us grew up together and knew each other as kids, so that helps with the live chemistry. I’ve always said this about this band — we know when to knock each other out, and we know when to hug each other. We won’t put up with any crap, but if you’re feeling down and need help, we’ll pick you up. We’re coming up on 30 years as a band, so we have to be friends first and foremost to keep it all going. If we aren’t friends like that, then we’re not going to have longevity in our career in order to continue doing what we love to do. That’s just the bottom line.”

Seeing eye to eye, and ear to ear, is part of the secret sauce of why Collective Soul continues to both record and play together at an uncompromised level of high quality. “That’s the end goal for everybody in this band,” agrees Roland. “Just because I write the songs doesn’t mean I’m the only one who wants it all to come out right. We all want it to be right — and that’s because this is a band that acts like a band.”

Working in tandem, sharing unbridled opinions, and listening to what everyone else has to say without recrimination are all key proponents in fostering Collective Soul’s perpetual harmony. “That’s the forte of this band,” Roland acknowledges. “We discuss things together, we figure them out together, and we make sure to get everything right. That’s how we love to do it. And I say this out of confidence, and not out of ego — we’re really, really good at it, too.”

You’ll get no arguments here. As 2022 unfurls, it’s clear heaven continues to shine its light down on Collective Soul, a formidable five-man band humming along in unison with many more good vibrations of their own to share with the masses far and wide. There’s a reason Collective Soul are made for me and you — so be sure to see and hear them for yourself first-hand, the next time they make their presence known in your neck of the woods.

Recent tour reviews

I only went to the show to see Collective Soul, no offense to Soul Asylum or 3 Doors Down. As usual, they did not disappoint. They started with two new songs, "Now's the Time" and 'Over Me', then launched into "Shine" which brought those not already standing to their feet. Other hits they played included 'December', 'Why Part 2', 'Better Now', 'The World I Know', and 'Heavy'. They did two new songs, 'Right As Rain' and 'Observation of Thought'. RAR was on the live album, but OOT is a brand new song with heavy meaning. They closed out the show with 'Gel', 'Where the River FLows', and 'Run'. Ed Roland played out the band on 'Run' and continued to play while the audience sang the chorus as he left the stage. This is only my 3rd Collective Soul show but it was the best one I have ever seen. I wished they could have played more songs, but I was beat with the heat and humidity so I didn't stay for 3 Doors Down.

Collective Soul is so much more than their hits and the few songs casual listeners to the band know. At the heart of their music is the simple concept of Love and Faith, which can be heard in almost every song they do. Their music speaks to the heart, and the soul.

It was a good show, the venue wasn't too big so that even if you're in the back of the seating area, there's still a good view. I've been listening to Collective Soul my whole life and they played old favorites as well as a few new ones. The only complaint I have is that the show was too short, just about an hour long.

Epic Show! Great sound at the Jubilee Auditorium! They played all the hits and even a brand new song from their next album that had never before been played live. I hung out after the show and got to meet Dean, Will, and Ed who are such easy-going, genuinely nice, down to earth human beings. Even though it was late and they had a long nights drive to Vancouver they took the time to meet some fans, sign some autographs, and discuss how they like to just rock out on the stage! Also I have to say Kudos to the Edmonton fans who are always excited and energetic to see collective soul. They are also a big part of why this show was what it was!

R&B Collective Soul II Soul announce UK tour

Chaka Khan, The Brand New Heavies, Soull II Soul

Soul II Soul kick off their 15-date UK tour at the Tramshed, Cardiff in January and finish with a career-defining show at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 18 th . Final tickets for the tour are now available via http://bit.ly/SoulIISoul2022

Regarding the tour Jazzie B says, “Who would have thought that after thirty-odd years later we’d still be on the road with this thing? It’s been a helluva journey – literally! – and I feel truly blessed. Now, I’m looking forward to going back to some of the familiar venues where we’ve made a lot of friends, I’m just as pumped about testing out places we’ve never been before but I’m seriously excited about playing the Royal Albert Hall. I want to thank to the fullness everybody who’s given their support up until now, and I’ll see you along the way – a happy face, a thumpin’ bass for a lovin’ race.”

The double Grammy Award winning and five-time Brit Award nominated British band tour the UK as they pay tribute to their legendary debut album Club Classics Vol. One . It follows the phenomenal success of their tour of the album in 2018 with sold out shows across the country.

Having had to previously reschedule the upcoming tour due to the pandemic, Jazzie B has spent the time off the road focusing on his label Funki Dreds, with a host of exciting new signings to be announced soon. Most recently the Booker T dub remix of ‘ Back To Life ’ has been nominated for a Grammy at the forthcoming awards.

During the course of their stellar career the band have sold over 10 million albums worldwide and Jazzie B was awarded an OBE for services to music in 2008, as well as winning an Ivor Novello Award for Inspiration, as “the man who gave British black music a soul of its own”.

With huge hits including ‘ Keep On Movin’ (which sold over a million copies in the US alone) and the UK number one single ‘Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)’ , Soul II Soul progressed from being one of the leaders of the 1980s warehouse scene to pioneering British black music around the world, and securing commercial success for themselves and the huge amount of artists they have influenced.

The forthcoming shows promise to be a grand spectacle with astounding production and surprises to celebrate Soul II Soul’s highly esteemed career.

Hootie & the Blowfish Announce 2024 Tour with Collective Soul and Edwin McCain

Hootie & the Blowfish return to the road in 2024, as the foursome sets out on the Summer Camp with Trucks Tour produced by Live Nation featuring special guests Collective Soul and Edwin McCain. This marks the first full tour since 2019 for the band whose chart-topping, GRAMMY-award winning career has featured more than 25 million albums sold and 17 Billboard-charting songs to date.

Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, Darius Rucker and Jim “Soni” Sonefeld, who formed the band during their time as students together at the University of South Carolina, will visit 43 cities across the U.S. and Canada to mark the 30th anniversary of their 2x Diamond-certified debut album Cracked Rear View, which remains among the top 10 best-selling albums in all of music history.

“Basically overnight, our lives changed when Cracked Rear View did what it did – and yet as we quickly moved from vans and college bars to tour busses and arenas, not much else changed with how we approached making music and sharing it with our fans,” reflects Bryan. “Edwin McCain told someone at the time that touring with us felt like summer camp with trucks… and that’s exactly how we want next year to feel, too. We can’t wait for you to join us!”

The tour kicks off May 30 in Dallas and runs through Sept. 28 in West Palm Beach, visiting arenas, amphitheaters and select stadiums such as Boston’s iconic Fenway Park (with special guests Barenaked Ladies) along the way, including a homecoming to Columbia, S.C.’s Colonial Life Arena for the Gamecock alumni. General onsale begins this Friday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. local time via Hootie.com, with presale access for Hootie & the Blowfish e-newsletter subscribers beginning tomorrow, Nov. 7, at 12 p.m. local time until Thursday, Nov. 9 at 10 p.m. local time.

COLLECTIVE SOUL’s highly anticipated and critically acclaimed tenth studio album, BLOOD, was released June 21, 2019 on Fuzze-Flex Records/ADA as a download or CD on any of these digital retailers. Vinyl copies of the album are currently available on the band’s official website. It garnered impressive debuts on various Billboard’s charts, including #3 on the “Alternative Albums” chart. Elsewhere, it debuted at #4 on the “Independent Albums” chart, #5 on the “Rock Albums” chart, #12 on the “Digital Albums” chart, #15 on the “Top Current Albums” chart, and #19 on the “Internet Albums” chart. Last year, the band announced a visually powerful and socially purposeful collaboration with eco-lifestyle brand One Golden Thread through the launch of an exclusive limited edition lyrical “tree-shirt, created to express the golden thread that connects all our collective souls.” It’s available now on One Golden Thread’s website. A portion of the t-shirt’s proceeds will benefit Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.

90s alt.rock giants Collective Soul have announced their “Just Looking Around” tour with Better Than Ezra and special guests Tonic. The 18-date North American run will kick off 29 May at Scottsdale, AZ’s Talking Stick Resort, and conclude 24 July at the Northern Quest Casino Theater in Airway Heights, WA.

Exclusive pre-sales begin this Wednesday, 18 March at 12:00 pm EDT, while general ticket sales open to the public on Friday, 20 March at 10:00 am local time. VIP packages for all three bands will also be offered on each acts’ individual websites. Fans of Collective Soul can get access to VIP packages starting 18 March, while Better Than Ezra and Tonic will be available on 19 March.

In a statement released earlier today, Better Than Ezra frontman Kevin Griffin declared, “This tour is all about good times, great friends and amazing nights of music”, adding, “We’re fired up to spend the summer with Collective Soul and Tonic. Put on your dancing shoes.”

With a sound steeped in Southern hard rock, soul and grunge, Collective Soul burst onto the airwaves in 1994 with their hit single, ‘Shine’, off their debut, Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid . ‘Shine’ topped Billboard ’s Album Rock Track chart for eight straight weeks, leaving an indelible mark on the 90s alt.rock movement.

To date, the Atlanta-based five-piece have released a total of ten studio albums, including 2019’s Blood and 2015’s critically-acclaimed See What You Started by Continuing , which topped Billboard ’s Alternative Album chart, and peaked at No.4 on the Rock Albums chart. The band have also been active in recent Record Store Days, reissuing Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid on vinyl for the very first time in 2018, while they’ll release a split 12” single, featuring two new songs, plus covers of R.E.M.’s ‘The One I Love’ and Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s ‘Opera Star’ for this year’s event on 20 June.

Collective Soul + Switchfoot Team Up for 40-Date Summer 2022 Tour

There's a lot of great rock history combined as Collective Soul and Switchfoot will team up for a rather extensive 40-date summer tour. The two bands will be hitting the road with a run that starts off July 15 in Gary, Indiana, and continues through to Sept. 24 finale in San Antonio, Texas. See all the dates, cities and venues listed below.

For Collective Soul, they didn't let the pandemic end their 26-year tradition of non-stop touring. That's put them in prime position to return to the road in 2022 without any rust to shed, ready to rock a set full of fan favorites. This comes as the band continues to support their 2019 album, Blood, which is available in both streaming and physical formats. Collective Soul are also selling a collaborative lyrical "tree-shirt" with eco-lifestyle brand One Golden Thread that is available here with a portion of the T-shirt proceeds going to benefit Alzheimer's care, support and research.

Switchfoot, meanwhile, are touring in support of their 12th studio album, Interrobang, which is available to stream or purchase in physical form here .

Collective Soul's Ed Roland says. “It’s always a thrill to go on tour, but this year is going to be so special because we get to be with not only our friends but a great band, Switchfoot! Southern boys meet Southern California boys, which will be a fun time for all!”

Switchfoot singer/guitarist Jon Foreman adds. “Been fans of COLLECTIVE SOUL and their songs from day one. Can’t believe it took this long for us to finally tour together. Psyched it’s finally happening!”

Tickets for the run will go on sale to the general public this Friday (April 1) at 10AM local time. VIP packages for Collective Soul will be available starting today (March 29) at 10AM local time via the group's website .

Cleo Sol, Michael Kiwanuka and Little Simz pictured at earlier live dates – each performed at Sault’s debut show, official pictures of which have not yet been made available.

Sault review – utterly astonishing debut show by UK soul enigmas

Drumsheds, London Joined by string sections, choristers and teams of dancers, the eclectic collective – including Cleo Sol, Little Simz and Michael Kiwanuka – lead an electrifying immersive event

A nticipation crackles for tonight’s debut live performance from Sault , the purposefully enigmatic collective centred around producer Dean Josiah Cover, AKA Inflo. Their discography – 11 albums in four years, five arriving in a single data dump a year ago – encompasses the kaleidoscope of Black music history, growing ever more spiritual and exploratory. Exactly which incarnation of Sault will materialise tonight: the sinewy garage-funk unit? The street soul artisans? The composers of diaphanous choral symphonies?

The answer is: all of them, as confirmed by numerous stages of varying size and purpose around Drumsheds’ main hall, which is accessed only after walking through an open fridge that leads into a winding installation composed of grimy tunnels and mirrored gardens. Any disorientation is intentional – Sault intend you take them on their terms, opening the set with an electrifying tribal drum solo that lasts over 20 minutes.

SO the #SAULT surprise gig last night certainly delivered on the SURPRISE element.... For a start, this is what you went into... Drumsheds had been transformed into a complete immersive world........ pic.twitter.com/Cp1VOsHvST — Elizabeth Holloway (@LizzeeRascal) December 15, 2023

The various stages field string sections and harpists, banks of choristers and teams of dancers whose artful choreography and striking costuming serve as our eyes’ primary focus. Clad in ninja garb, the band play in the shadows or within a frosted-glass terrarium, the vocalists – including Cleo Sol and Little Simz – silhouettes cast on curtains or singing from behind a spectrum of veils. Sault may finally be in the building, but their enigma remains intact.

All this mystery would be meaningless were the music not so consistently remarkable. Their eclecticism is dazzling but grounded in substance, their anthems aiming at the feet and the heart with equal accuracy: the choir-led symphonics of Time is Precious; Simz’ writhing, irresistible Fear No Man; the fearsomely in-the-pocket Warrior. Dancehall lament segues into kalimba reverie into qawwali song; the ecstatic house-y throb of I Just Want to Dance is engulfed by a marching drumline; a silhouetted Michael Kiwanuka croons a tear-stained and beautiful Colourblind.

It was Kendrick at Glastonbury and Punchdrunk theatre and Block 9 and the London 2012 opening ceremony and Stop Making Sense and American Utopia and it was also like nothing you’ve ever seen. @saultglobal you pulled off something extraordinary pic.twitter.com/bAYbNlbaik — Jon Hillcock (@jonhillcock) December 15, 2023

It’s a lot. Given the buzz that’s built around Sault these last four years – and the £100 ticket price – it had to be. But this immersive, eclectic, astonishing three hours posit Cover and collaborators as time-travellers traversing Afro-legacy and Afro-future, masked visionaries cycling between humility and audacity. It’s enough to suggest there’s absolutely nothing they can’t do.
