I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again
A wonderrful experience
WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.
Old South &Florida tour
Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can
The tour director expertise and…
The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. This is my third trip with this tour company and I will continue to travel with this company due to excellent planning and customer service. Thank you

Venice Biennale 2024: Archie Moore unveils his staggering artwork spanning 2,400 generations at the Australia pavilion
Analysis Venice Biennale 2024: Archie Moore unveils his staggering artwork spanning 2,400 generations at the Australia pavilion
In the south of Venice, Italy, along one of its many famed canals, sits a large cube-like building designated "Australia". Inside, thousands of rectangular white boxes map more than 2,400 generations in what must be the most expansive family tree ever drawn by hand.
The vast chalk drawing is the centrepiece of Archie Moore's installation, kith and kin, Australia's representative exhibition for the 60th Venice Biennale, which opens to the public today. It's the world's oldest, if not foremost, contemporary art biennial.
The title of the installation refers to the Old English term that denotes one's family and countrymen, which has particular resonance for the Bigambul and Kamilaroi artist in this work, centring the notion of Country alongside the First Nations concepts of extended family and community.
In the darkened space of the pavilion, it's easy to imagine you're under the night sky, such as you find in the Australian bush.
Curator Ellie Buttrose has likened it to a "celestial map", except in this low-light vision of the cosmos, the stars are the names of Moore's real and speculative ancestors.
Just as Moore's ancestors read the stars, so did they populate the dark matter between the stars with epic origin stories.
But there are gaping holes in Moore's genealogical chart, representing gaps in cultural knowledge and oral history that could not be passed on due to colonisation, massacres, epidemics and even natural disasters.
It's an intentionally incomplete family tree — distilling some 65,000 years of ancestry into a single artwork now on display on the Rio dei Giardini.
From white cube to Blak monolith
Like embassies or diplomatic missions, friendly nations — 86 in total — are invited to install the work of their representative artists in their national pavilions for the duration of the Biennale, in a park set aside for the purpose, the Giardini, just off the Grand Canal.
The traditionally white cube of Australia's pavilion has disappeared under litres of blackboard paint, and the inside is redolent of chalk dust.
Moore's drawing covers all four walls and the ceiling of the pavilion with names of both real and hypothetical ancestors. In the centre, hundreds of piles of gleaming white documents are arranged meticulously on a table.
Among them are coronial reports with names redacted: The official proceedings of inquests into the hundreds of Indigenous deaths in state care since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody delivered its final, multi-volume report in 1991.
A dark horse
When it was announced that Moore had been selected to represent Australia in Venice, some observers questioned the decision.
But while the sceptics twittered , the characteristically unassuming artist quietly continued work on kith and kin, which he has painstakingly installed over the past two months by hand in the monolith of the Australia pavilion.
Moore is an introvert. Across his 30-year career, he has built a reputation for creating subversive work that sometimes flies under the radar of the mainstream art world. But that's what he does best — he lets the work speak for itself.
And speak it does, sometimes acidly, but with tongue firmly planted in cheek and lashings of self-deprecating black humour.
Although Moore is something of an outlier, he has produced consistently strong and increasingly ambitious work over the past decade since a cruel joke turned inward won him the University of Queensland's National Artists' Self-Portrait Prize in 2013.
He entered a taxidermied black dog — of the breed known for turning on their owners or small children — as his self-portrait for the invitation-only $50,000 prize. (If you look closely, the collar tag reads "Archie".)
The dog's fur wasn't lustrous enough so Moore darkened it with black shoe polish, like the punchline to some racist joke.
It's a biting crystallisation of Moore's rage at the racial abuse, the not-black-enough colourism and punch-down lateral violence he experienced firsthand, growing up in Australia with mixed Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage. (His mother's lineage is Bigambul and Kamilaroi, while his father is of Scottish and British descent.)
Making his mark
For those who have followed Moore's trajectory closely, his selection as Australia's representative artist at the Venice Biennale comes as no surprise.
At 54, he is one of a growing crop of gen X artists to represent Australia in the Biennale d'Arte, a highly-prized distinction even among the most cynical of practitioners.
He is also only the second First Nations artist to solo-represent Australia in the 25 years of national participation.
Previous representatives include Marco Fusinato , whose work Desastres offered a piercing and at times harmonic wall of noise in a daily ritual of showing up — all 200 days of the Biennale in 2022. Then there was Angelica Mesiti , who orchestrated a musical score based on a poem by David Malouf in 2019; Tracey Moffatt , who dreamt up sepia-toned visions of exile and longing in 2017; and Fiona Hall , who was the first to present in the new pavilion in 2015 with a work that has been described as a wunderkammer in camo, patrolled by stray camp dogs.
Sharing kith and kin
The Australian pavilion is nestled behind those of Great Britain, France and the United States, adjacent to Czechia and Uruguay, and backs onto Israel. Its black steel exterior makes a bold statement about the island nation's modernity. (Aboriginal artist and activist Richard Bell once ridiculed it as a "black box for white art" .)
Inside though, it is a tabula rasa — a blank slate. Every representative artist since it opened in 2015 has had to integrate their work or at least fill the space within the architectural box.
None has made their presence felt more visibly than Moore, with his hand-drawn family tree that unfurls on the walls of the Australia pavilion.
It contends with the overall theme of the Biennale, curated by Brazil's Adriano Pedrosa: "Foreigners everywhere."
None too subtly, in Moore's expansive family tree, the borders disappear and we are all either "kin" — blood relatives with mutual descent from a common ancestor — or "kith" — a community with a shared responsibility for Country.
It's a poetic and timely reminder, according to Buttrose, of our common humanity.
kith and kin is at the Australia pavilion, Giardini della Biennale, as part of the Venice Biennale until November 24.
Daniel Browning received a partial travel bursary from Creative Australia to participate in the public program for the Venice Biennale.

- A set of new augmented reality (AR) “experiences” lets users travel virtually through cosmic objects in 3D.
- The 3D models are based on data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes.
- This is the first time that sonifications (translations of data into sound) are being incorporated into Instagram AR experiences.
- This release helps celebrate the upcoming Chandra 25th anniversary of operations and continues the goal of expanded accessibility of its data.
These Chandra Instagram experiences join a space-themed collection in Instagram from recent years, that includes NASA mission control, the International Space Station, and the Perseverance Rover on Mars. The objects in the new Chandra Instagram collection include the Tycho supernova remnant, the Vela Pulsar, the Helix Nebula, the Cat’s Eye , and the Chandra spacecraft.
The new Instagram experiences are created from 3D models based on data collected by Chandra and other telescopes along with computer models. Traditionally, it has been very difficult to gather 3D data of objects in space due to their two-dimensional projection on the sky. New instruments and techniques, however, have allowed astronomers in recent years to construct data-driven models of what these distant objects look like in three dimensions.
These advancements in astronomy have paralleled the explosion of opportunities in virtual, extended, and augmented reality. Such technologies provide virtual digital experiences, which now extend beyond Earth and into the cosmos.
This new set of Chandra Instagram experiences was made possible by a collaboration including NASA and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as students and researchers at Brown University. The 3D models of Tycho, Vela and Helix were done in conjunction with Sal Orlando, an astrophysicist at Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics in Palermo. The Cat’s Eye Nebula was created with data from Ryan Clairmont, physics researcher and undergraduate at Stanford University. Kim Arcand from SAO oversaw the project and worked with Brown University’s Tom Sgouros and his team, research assistant Alexander Dupuis and undergraduate Healey Koch, on the Chandra Instagram filters.
Vela Pulsar: The Vela Pulsar is the aftermath of a star that collapsed, followed by an explosion that sent a remarkable storm of particles and energy into space. The Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes captured this storm, seen here as a 3D model. At the center of Vela is a pulsar, a rapidly spinning dense star that sends beams of light out into space like a cosmic lighthouse.
Tycho's Supernova Remnant: Massive stars die in giant explosions called supernovas that can outshine an entire galaxy. After a supernova explosion, the remains of the star can become a spectacular and evolving cosmic monument to the now-deceased star. These remnants glow in X-ray light, which NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory can detect such as in this image of Tycho’s Supernova Remnant.
Helix Nebula: In about 5 billion years, our Sun will run out of fuel and expand, possibly engulfing Earth. These end stages of a star’s life can be utterly beautiful as is the case with this planetary nebula called the Helix Nebula. Astronomers study these objects by looking at all kinds of light, including X-rays that the Chandra X-ray Observatory sees.
Cat's Eye Nebula: Eventually, our Sun will run out of fuel and die (though not for about another 5 billion years). As it does, it will become like the object seen here, the Cat’s Eye Nebula, which is a planetary nebula. A fast wind from the remaining stellar core rams into the ejected atmosphere and pushes it outward, creating wispy structures seen in X-rays by Chandra and optical light by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Chandra Spacecraft: A quarter of a century ago, scientists began a quest to answer some of the biggest questions in the Universe. They have discovered many truths — and uncovered even more mysteries. Since it was launched into space in July 1999, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has changed our view of the Universe. With this telescope, we continue to see what is otherwise invisible. We are still learning, exploring, and expanding humanity’s grasp of what the Universe has to offer. Our X-ray legacy continues.
This image contains four separate images presented in a 2 by 2 grid. Top left, Vela pulsar. Top right, Tycho's Supernova Remnant. Bottom left, Helix Nebula. Bottom right, Cat's Eye Nebula.
The Vela Pulsar, the aftermath of a collapsed and exploded star sending a jet of particles into space. The pulsar resembles a soft, pillowy, lavender bean in a pocket of blue gas. A faint stream of gas, the X-ray jet, appears to shoot from the pocket, heading into the distance at our upper right. Purple markings in the lavender bean shape strongly resemble narrow eyes and an open mouth, giving the pulsar a squinting happy face. In this image, X-ray light detected by Chandra is shown in blues and purples.
The Tycho supernova remnant is a spherical cloud of reds, greens, and blues set against a starry sky. The cloud is ejected material still propagating from a star that exploded in 1572, as seen from Earth. Here, the supernova resembles a fluffy pink cotton ball. The dense, translucent cloud is streaked with hazy veins, and mottled with red and blue. The edges of the cloud appear to be highlighted in soft white. Upon close inspection, a thin red-violet line can be discerned around the outer edge of the multicolored cloud. The red-violet line shows where electrons have been accelerated to high energies, producing X-rays detected by Chandra. This provides evidence that supernova remnants are a major source of energetic particles, including electrons and protons, which continually hit Earth's atmosphere.
The Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula, the end phases of the life of a Sun-like star. Helix resembles a creature's eye, both in shape and in detail. At the center of the nebula, where the pupil would reside, an orb shaped cloud glows in dark pink. Surrounding the orb, where the colored iris of an eye would be, is a dramatic mix of color in blues, browns, and golds that appear somewhat striated, very similar to a human eye. These striations extend to the left and right of the otherwise circular iris structure, as though they had been gently pulled from the two o'clock and seven o'clock positions until the material formed faint wisps. Surrounding the iris structure are roughly spherical puffs of blue haze. The entire canvas is dotted with stars in red, green, and blue.
The Cat's Eye Nebula is an image of an ethereal shape surrounded by concentric circles. The shape is a huge cloud of gas and dust blown off of a dying star. The concentric circles are bubbles expelled by the star over time. The dust cloud resembles a translucent pastry pulled to golden yellow points near our upper right and lower left, with a blob of bright purple jelly inside the bulbous pale blue core. The jelly-like center represents X-ray data from Chandra. The outer cloud and translucent circles represent visible light data from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Aliens may be hitching rides on meteors to colonize the cosmos, study suggests. Here's how we could spot them.
A fringe theory called "panspermia" suggests that lifeforms can spread to new planets by hitching rides on meteors. New research lays out a roadmap for finding where these hypothetical, planet-hopping aliens may reside.
If life is capable of spreading from planet to planet — a concept known as " panspermia " — then we might be able to detect it, even if we don't know what we're looking for, new research suggests.
Astronomers are on the hunt for life beyond Earth . While there are several promising locations within the solar system , the sheer abundance of exoplanets means that we are most likely to find life on a planet orbiting another star. There are more than 5,000 confirmed exoplanets to date, according to NASA — and that number is always rising.
But these searches for extraterrestrial life currently face one major roadblock: we don't know exactly what we're looking for. We only know of one kind of planet that is definitely capable of hosting life, and we only know of one kind of life — that is, Earth, and the carbon-based life that is found here. But life may, say astronomers, take an astonishing number of forms throughout the galaxy. While we might get extremely lucky and find an exact replica of Earth with the exact same kind of life, we are more likely to face fuzzy, unclear, nuanced situations that will take many years to unravel.
A pair of astronomers recently proposed an alternative to this approach, focusing less on what life would look like and more on what life would do. Specifically, they propose a detection strategy based on the concept of panspermia, the idea that life can start on one planet and spread to others by hitching rides on meteorites.
Related: What's the best evidence we've found for alien life?
While panspermia lies outside the mainstream of scientific research, it's not outright pseudo-science either. Martian meteorites have been found on Earth , and scientists are routinely surprised by the hardiness of living creatures and the extreme environments that they can survive in.
One of the key characteristics of any kind of life is its ability to change a planet's natural balance. On Earth, for example, we have far more oxygen in our atmosphere than we would were life not present, and distant observers would notice much more green on our landmasses than there would be otherwise.

We don't know exactly what properties of an exoplanet that alien life would change — but, if that life is capable of panspermia, then it would attempt to make those same changes on every planet it came across as it spread from world to world. Sometimes it would fail, if the conditions weren't right to allow that life to thrive — but sometimes it would succeed, making the new planet similar to its original world. Then that new planet would serve as a starting point for a new round of panspermia.
In their new study, the researchers devised a statistical test where, if we measure enough properties of enough planets, then we can potentially identify a cluster of nearby planets that share similar characteristics. Since these planets, each one orbiting a distant star, would have no other reason to be similar to each other, this cluster would stand out from the collection of all exoplanets .
Such a discovery wouldn't be a smoking gun for identifying life, but it would be a major clue that something strange was happening to those planets — and that the cause just might be life propagating among the stars.

The researchers acknowledged that their work has limitations. Firstly, it assumes that panspermia is possible, which is an untested hypothesis. Secondly, their technique only works if we can collect enough data about a large number of exoplanets. But the advantage of their technique is that it's "agnostic," meaning that it can identify a potential signature of life without any bigger assumptions about how that life works.
The team's research was published in March to the preprint database arXiv, and has not yet been peer reviewed.

- Robert Lohman I don't think a panspermia theory needs to posit intentional action by intelligent aliens. On earth, life on the prokaryotic level can remain dormant for a ridiculously long time. The odds against such life being launched into space in ejecta and landing on a suitable planet may be very long, but given enough time and a vast universe,it may happen. Reply
