Port Cozumel cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Cozumel, Quintana Roo Mexico, Riviera Maya. San Miguel de Cozumel is a major cruise port and city on Cozumel Island. Cozumel is part of Mexico's Quintana Roo state, located on Yucatan Peninsula's northeastern part. This is the most visited port of call on roundtrip voyages from the USA to the Western Caribbean.

By berthing capacity and annual cruise shipping volumes, Cozumel is currently ranked the world's 4th-largest cruise port - following only Florida's PortMiami , Port Canaveral/Orlando , and Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale .

This Mexican port city destination attracts international tourists (mostly from the USA) with its tropical weather, snorkeling, diving and sea fishing opportunities, shopping and sightseeing. The island has population around 100,000, most of whom (around 80,000) live in San Miguel de Cozumel. In Quintana Roo is also Costa Maya (Mexico's second-largest cruise port).

Port Calica is located approx 5 mi / 8 km south of Playa del Carmen . Currently, there is a small pier serving mainly ferries to / from Cozumel (approx 12 mi / 20 km away). There are two ferry companies running the Calica (Playa del Carmen)-Cozumel ferries. Tickets cost ~USD 15 pp (roundtrip). Depending on weather, the crossing Cozumel-Calica is 30-45 min.

Puerto Cozumel (locode MXCZM) is opposite Playa del Carmen and is the principal/main cruise port to Cancun - one of Mexico's most visited tourist destinations. Cancun is best known for the Mayan archaeological sites El Rey, El Meco, Coba, Muyil, Xcaret, Kohunlich, Kinichna, Dzibanche, Oxtankah, Tulum, Chacchoben, Chichen Itza. Cancun is approx 60 mi (100 km) from Cozumel (~2,5 hours drive distance) and is served by an International Airport linking via regularly scheduled flights to Canada, USA, Central and South America, Europe.

Cozumel Island offers some of the world's best underwater tour activities, with its main tourist attractions being offshore coral reefs and numerous diving shops and tour operators. The main diving areas are located on the island's western side. Its east side is relatively undeveloped but has amazing beaches with beach restaurants every few miles. The most popular among tourists beaches are Playa Palancar and Playa Azul.

Chankanaab National Park is approx 5,5 mi (9 km) south of San Miguel. The park is open daily (between 7 am - 5 pm) and as amenities offers a lagoon, beach, restaurant, full-service bar, changing rooms, several walking trails. There you can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, SeaTREK helmet diving, swimming with dolphins. Another major attraction is the Cozumel Pearl Farm. This is an active farm surrounded by a mangrove lagoon and accessible only by boat.

The local economy depends heavily on tourism. The island's tropical climate determines the rainy season (from June through November) and the dry season (from December through May). The wet season is also characterized by hurricanes.

Cozumel cruise port

A single cruise vessel in Cozumel (with max passenger capacity 3000 plus max crew 500) generates on average spending USD 313740 (passengers) and USD 31740 (crew), plus nearly USD 29000 in port fees. This results in total contribution to the local economy of USD 374480 - and this is per ship.

The following statistical data was provided by the Cozumel port authority.

In 2006 the cruise port received 2,028 million passengers, out of all the 5,551 million that visited Mexico that year. In 2007, this number jumped to 2,45 million (23% increase), while Mexico saw a 10% growth (to 6+ million).

In 2009, the average per-passenger spending in Cozumel was USD 105 (17% increase over 2008) directly benefiting various local industries through purchases (goods and services), including tours (shore excursions), drinks and food, retail shopping, ground transportation services.

In 2014, the cruising industry generated in Cozumel USD 565,4 million in cruise spending (crews, passengers and shipping companies combined), 15990 local jobs, USD 93,5 million in wages (produced through cruise ship tourism).

In 2014, the cruise port handled over 3,3 million passengers. In 2017, this number reached 3,6 million, ranking Cozumel the world's leading cruise ship tourism destination. In October 2015, the port hosted the second "FCCA Cruise Conference and Trade Show" (Oct 5-9).

In December 2020, Quintana Roo media reported that a new (USD 10 pp) tourist tax on foreigners goes into effect since April 1, 2021. Details on how it will be collected or will it be applied also to cruise ship tourists were not revealed.

In early-February 2021 was proposed that following the impact of the Coronavirus crisis, Cozumel could be also used as homeport (departure port) for roundtrips to Caribbean island destinations - including Cuba. The idea is well backed up by the cheap flights from the USA and Port Cozumel's lower dockage fees, in comparison to the American ports' fees.

During the post-COVID season 2022, Port Cozumel recorded a total of 1117 ship calls and handled 2,943760 million cruisers. For season 2023, the Port had booked 1154 ship berthings (scheduled ship visits) with estimated 3,726115 million tourists.

Royal Beach Club Cozumel (Royal Caribbean Resort)

In late-March 2024, RCG/Royal Caribbean Group announced its plans for the Royal Beach Club Cozumel.

Scheduled for inauguration in 2026, this exclusive destination (to be developed at Cozumel Island's western coast) will feature several beaches (including adults-only and suite guests-only), kids playgrounds, resort-style large freshwater swimming pools, swim-up bars, various drinking and dining venues (lounges, bars, snack shacks, restaurants), Street Market (shops) as well as live music and entertainment, private cabanas (for rent), watersports activities (snorkeling/scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing).

Cozumel cruise terminal

San Miguel de Cozumel cruise port has three different piers for docking. They all are located on the west side of the island. If in your cruise itinerary to Cozumel is added "Fundeo", that means the cruise ship will anchor in the harbor and passengers will be transported to and from the shore (Punta Langosta pier) via the ship's tender boats.

Punta Langosta Pier Cruise Terminal

Punta Langosta Pier is located right downtown San Miguel. You can walk on your own or join guided walking tour in the city. There is also a taxi rank in front the pier. Taxis are relatively inexpensive. If you want to rent a car, the closest offices are 5 blocks from the cruise ship pier.

International Pier

The largest vessels (including Royal Caribbean and NCL ships) dock at International Pier. This is Cozumel's oldest pier, located at ~5 min taxi ride from San Miguel. After disembarkation, passengers walk through a shopping plaza with various shops, restaurants, bars. This is a shopping area exclusively for cruise tourists. All the venues here open only during cruise ship calls. Prices here tend to be higher than in the city.

The pier is approx 1,5 mi / 2,5 km from downtown San Miguel (to the south). The distance is easily walkable (~30 min), and most pleasant as it is along the waterfront promenade. There is also a taxi rank in front of the cruise ship pier. Taxi ride is ~10 min. If the lines of disembarking passengers waiting for taxis are long, you can exit the pier, walk toward El Cid La Ceiba Hotel and catch a taxi on the street there.

Carnival's Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal

The third Cozumel cruise ship pier was built by Carnival Corporation and serves exclusively its brand companies' vessels. Puerta Maya is located 0,5 mi (0,8 km) south of The International Pier. The terminal (aka Little Cozumel) has the most modern and diverse facilities.

• In October 2015, Carnival Corporation inaugurated the opening of a parallel berth (3rd) to the Puerta Maya cruise pier. Carnival Freedom was the first ever ship to dock there. Since then, Puerta Maya pier has capacity of 4 vessels that can be berthed there simultaneously.
• Cozumel's 3rd (new) cruise berth cost USD 20 million. Its opening followed by just 2 days the inauguration of Carnival's new and exclusive Dominican Republic cruise port Amber Cove (USD 85 million construction project).
• In 2015, Carnival Corporation cruise ships brought to Cozumel over 1,7 million tourists.

The list of facilities at the Puerta Maya cruise ship terminal (retail shops, restaurants, bars, services) includes:

• Food and drinks are offered at Tres Amigos, Fat Tuesday, Cafe Punta del Cielo, and Pancho's Backyard.
• Retail priced shopping is offered at Dufry, Ron Jon, Miro, Eriks, Hammock Island, The T-Shirt Place, Rogers Boots, Pirana Joe, Boutique Sr Frogs, Mare Blue, Tan Tan, Veari, La Vikina, Dufry Tequileria, Lupita, and Viva Mexico.
• Jewelry and designer watches are offered at Diamond International, Who Knew, Touch O Gold, Regal Silver, Indigo, Plateria D'Alberto, Joyeria Ruby's, Milano, Joyeria Montero, Silver Emporium, Red, Fiesta Maya, Caribbean Pirates, Miro, Le Best, Reef, Del Sol, Rogers Boots, Mayan Flea Market, and Los Cinco Soles.
• Cruise passenger services are offered at Costa Dental, and Drugs & Deli.
• All car rental offices in Puerta Maya are in building 19 - Avis, Alamo, specialty cars and executive cars.
• The terminal also has a Shorex Booth (shore excursions / tours booking and information), phones, restrooms, First Aid Assistance, and Coral Reef Exhibit gallery.

Car rentals are offered by all major companies, with their offices located near the cruise piers. The San Miguel town itself is easily walkable. Its main attractions are the numerous shops and eateries. Most tourist shops are around the town's main plaza.

Port Cozumel also has a Ferry Pier located to the north of Punta Langosta. It serves the regularly scheduled ferry service between San Miguel de Cozumel and Playa del Carmen .

New cruise terminal on Cozumel Island?

In October 2018 was conducted a study for building a new (4th) cruise terminal on Cozumel Island to cope with the constantly increasing passenger shipping traffic. According to Quintana Roo state's statistics, in 2018 the island was visited by over 3,1 million cruise ship tourists (passengers and crew).

The study analyzed the possible environmental impact for the island ( transportation, waste and provision services) and its marine area . The new facility could be constructed and operated by Disney Cruise Line .

Previously, the plan for a 4th berth was rejected in June 2016 by local residents following public consultation. The site for the new terminal was in front of Marina Banco Playa (Puerto de Abrigo, island's northern coast).

• Castillo Real: this a Mayan site located near the northern tip of the island. You can see a temple, lookout tower and a pyramid base. There are also possibilities for snorkeling.
• Cozumel Park: Discover Mexico with interactive exhibits. Interesting place for lunch is Mercadito Corona. You will taste authentic cuisine surrounded by local music.
• El Cedral: the village is located near the center of the island. It was the first discovered Mayan site in 1518 by the Spanish explorers.
• Chankanaab Lagoon: amazing place for swimming and snorkeling among rainbow colored fishes.
• Museo de Cozumel: discover the history of the island. The museum also houses library, gift shop, book store and a restaurant.
• Plaza Del Sol: the main square of San Miguel.
• Punta Celarin: the lighthouse is located at the island’s southern end and has breathtaking views.
• San Gervasio Ruins: the most visited ruins.

Beaches: Cozumel offers amazing beaches. Among the most popular are Playa San Francisco and Playa Corona.

Nachi Cocom Beach is an all-inclusive beach resort (unlimited beverages) with day pass entrance. Deals are inclusive of unlimited beverages and food, free Wi-Fi internet, outdoor Jacuzzi and swimming pool. This private beach property is sized approx 185 m2 (1980 ft2). The list of amenities also includes a swim-up bar, beach bar, public restrooms, outdoor showers (freshwater), beach hammocks, palapas umbrellas, English-speaking staff, lounge chairs.

Mr Sanchos Beach Resort (Cozumel Island's southwest coast, ~15-min taxi drive from the cruise port) is all-inclusive, with day passes offering unlimited food (self-serve buffet station) and beverages (Mexican brands), beach access and amenities (chairs, umbrellas), swimming pools access (all have swim-up bars). The resort also has an aqua park (costs extra) fitted with trampolines, inflatable climbing Iceberg and climbing rock, pyramid slider, rock slider, among other attractions.

Other popular beaches are Paradise Beach, Playa Palancar, Playa Mia. Cozumel features several great resorts / eco-parks, often included in cruise lines' shore excursion offerings. The most popular among cruise tourists parks are Chankanaab, Xcaret, Punta Sur.

Cozumel Cruise Terminals: Puerta Maya, Punta Langosta, and International Terminal

Basic guide to the three cruise terminals in Cozumel (Mexico): which ships dock where or anchor in the most popular cruise port in the Caribbean.

Most travelers cruising to Cozumel for the first time do not realize immediately that the cruise ship will be docked at one of many piers.

By contrast, frequent cruisers that have repeatedly docked in Cozumel tend to think that the terminals (and even the piers) are unquestionably designated for specific cruise lines. But, in reality, this is not an immutable fact.

For instance, many a seasoned cruiser will swear that Carnival cruise ships dock exclusively at the Puerta Maya and that Royal Caribbean (and Celebrity ships) only dock at the International Cruise Terminal. As much as this is true (most of the time), the Editor has been on Carnival ships docking at the International Terminal. And, as shown in the photo above, Carnival ships may also dock at the Punta Langosta Terminal.

Although it is not always possible to determine ahead of time what will be the pier (and Terminal) where cruise ships will dock, there are a few guidelines that may help the cruise traveler to plan what to do and see in Cozumel regardless of where ships moor.

The Three Terminals in Cozumel

As you can see on the map above, there are 3 Cruise Terminals in Cozumel. The terminal in Punta Langosta is right by San Miguel's southern end and only has one pier. Likewise, the International Terminal only has one main pier and a smaller one for tender boats. Puerta Maya with two piers is the largest.

Puerta Maya and International Terminal

The Puerta Maya Terminal and the International Cruise Terminal are very close to each other - the entrances are no more than 1,500 feet (500 meters) apart. Both terminals are around 3 miles south of San Miguel, the main city of Cozumel.

Puerta Maya is the largest terminals and just a few hundred yards away from the International Terminal - the latter's pier showing in the photo on the right.

Do not be confused by the pier between the International Terminal and Punta Langosta. This pier is used exclusively by ferries transporting cars and trucks to Playa del Carmen. The pier for the passenger ferry to Playa del Carmen is located in the heart of San Miguel.

Puerta Maya - Cozumel

As a rule of thumb, Carnival Corporation cruise ships (Carnival, Princess, P&O, Costa and so on) dock at the Puerta Maya Terminal. But, exceptionally, Holland &America cruise ships usually dock at Punta Langosta. Generally speaking, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships will dock at the International Cruise Terminal.

Punta Langosta cruise terminal

All other cruise lines will dock at Punta Langosta. If you are cruising on ships of cruise lines such as NCL, Disney, Oceania, Silversea, Regent or Crystal it is almost guaranteed that your ship will moor at Punta Langosta. But always keep in mind that this is not an immutable fact.

Anchoring and Tenders in Cozumel Cruise Port

Finally, a word about anchoring and tender boats. At the height of the Caribbean Season - between November and March, in particular - the port of Cozumel may be visited by over 8 cruise ships.

When cruise ships anchor, tender boats will moor at smaller piers next to Puerta Maya or the International Pier.

When this happens, cruise ships will anchor close to both the Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminals and passengers will be tendered by local boats to adjacent, smaller piers on one of the terminals. These piers may also be used for shore excursions.

There are actually three different pier locations.

Punta Langosta (used by Disney, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Silversea, Marella Cruises) , is located right downtown and after leaving the ship and walking towards the city down the dock, you will go over an overpass into a shopping mall. You are right in the heart of downtown Cozumel. One can also take a ferry to Playa Del Carmen. Always get a one-way ticket as the different ferry companies do not accept each other's tickets. The companies are Winjet  and  Ultramar's . The ferry ride can be a little rough!

The International Pier (used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships, consisting of two piers, is about a 10-minute taxi ride south of town, you can walk it in about 30 minutes right along the coastline, but if it is hot, take a taxi. If the lines are really long just get out of the taxi line and walk out the exit of the pier to the street - turn left and walk toward the El Cid La Ceiba Hotel. There are taxis coming from town trying to get into the pier and they are thrilled to get a fare without having to get in the long line of cars at the pier.

The third pier, Puerto Maya, ( used by cruise lines sailing under Carnival Corporation flag) consisting of three piers, is just beyond the International Pier and has the same dynamics.

Finally, when there are too many ships in port, some ships will anchor outside and tender into the Punta Langosta pier.

The main town and dive operations are on the west side of the island, but if you rent a Beetle or scooter then the east side of the island is the place to go. The east side of the island is mostly undeveloped, but there are beautiful beaches, big waves, and rocky outcrops over the ocean. If the waves are sufficient you can find a few small blow holes. You will also find a restaurant on the beach every few kilometers.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Rent a car from any of the well-known firms. You will find them near the cruise ship docks. Since there is only one main road you will not get lost.

Expect to pay $10 for the ride into San Miguel from the pier. Most taxi drivers ask much more when in doubt, ask to see the rate card required of all taxi drivers to carry.

San Miguel is very walkable and you can easily explore the waterfront and plaza area on foot. The main attractions are the small eateries and shops that line the streets and the main square.

Mini Submarine Tour — a new way of exploring the underwater world. This new activity by Cozumel Water Sports offers all non divers and non snorkelers to explore the reefs and sea life of Cozumel. Riding your underwater scooter with your head dry in the air filled helmet, you can drive around the reefs. Especially great for people who wear glasses as you can have them on under water.

The primary gateway between Cozumel and the mainland of the Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun and the Riviera Maya, is the passenger ferry to Playa del Carmen, which is especially popular with cruise ship passengers coming to the mainland to see attractions like the Mayan Ruins, Xcaret, or Xel Ha.

Nearby Places:

Chankanaab National Park , (About 9km south of town), 7am - 5pm daily. The park includes a beach, restaurant, bar, changing rooms, walking trails, and a lagoon with a large iguana population. Activities include snorkeling & diving, swimming with the dolphins, scuba, and Seatrek. $2 coupon and packages available at their website. approx. $22 for adults.

Being the only active Pearl Farm in the Caribbean, Cozumel Pearl Farm is located in a natural protected area that remains pristine and untouched; it is only accessible by boat since it is surrounded by the mangrove lagoon ecosystem on one side and the fascinating turquoise color waters of the Caribbean on the other.

Chichen Itza Chichen Itza is a well-known Archaeological Site and more after being selected one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in July the 7th, 2007. Two hours away from the cruise terminals.

Río Secreto Río Secreto could very well be one of the great world wonders. Experience this stunning underground river with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It's like stepping back in time to witness something mysterious and truly spectacular. About 30 minutes drive from the cruise terminals.

Shopping and Food

Silver is cheaper here than in the U.S. but be sure to look for the .925 stamp as some places do sell fake silver jewelry. Tip: To avoid being caught out, carry a small magnet when you shop. If the silver sticks to the magnet then it is not sterling silver.

The currency of Mexico is the peso (MXN). The symbol for pesos is the same as for US dollars, which can be slightly confusing. Prices in dollars (in tourist areas) are labeled "US$" or sport an S with a double stroke. There is about 17 peso to 1US$.

Credit cards are not as widely accepted as in Europe or the USA. Some companies make an extra charge of around 5% on such transactions. Cash is King here.

Spanish is the main language. English is largely spoken in border cities with the United States as well as tourist destinations.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Traditionally, stores are open from 9 to 1 (except Sunday) and 5 to 9, but those nearest the pier tend to stay open all day, particularly during high season. Most shops are closed Sunday morning.

One of the most visited ports on Caribbean itineraries, Cozumel is a relatively lightly developed island off the coast of Mexico. With so many ships and therefore cruisers arriving, there is plenty of things to do to suit all tastes on the island, plus the mainland is just a short ferry ride away.

With so many things to see and do though it might be hard to decide what do to during your limited time. Let this guide give you suggestions for things to see and do during your time in Cozumel, Mexico.

COZUMEL CRUISE TERMINAL

There are three terminals in Cozumel so it is important to know which terminal your cruise ship is moored at for when you return to the vessel.

If you are using a GPS or map program (we use  Here WeGo ), input the following to find the correct terminal:

GETTING ON AND OFF THE SHIP

DISEMBARKATION:  Leaving the ship is simple and you will quickly be in the port area shops and able to head onwards to your chosen attractions or excursions.

EMBARKATION:  As with most ports, you will go through an airport-style screening process to get back on board the ship if you have left the secure areas, so ensure you leave time for this when planning any excursions.

TAXIS : As to be expected there is a high demand for taxis during initial disembarkation hours and they may not be readily available. Please account for this wait time in your plans, especially if you are planning on travelling further afield.

MONEY MATTERS

The currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN) which is divided into 100 cents. It is printed on paper bills in the following denominations: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, and $1000. It also includes the following coins: 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20. However, US dollars are readily accepted by most vendors but visitors should be careful to check the conversion rate being offered is reasonable.

Although it’s not mandatory, giving a tip or propina is customary in Mexico and some service industries will expect a tip for a job well done. Generally, pay in Mexico is modest compared with many countries and a small tip to you can mean much more to the recipient. Tipping in pesos is preferred, but dollar bills are a good substitute if you don’t have any Mexican currency.

RESTAURANTS:  It is customary to offer your waiter or waitress a tip between 10-20% depending on the level of service they provided. You will normally have to request the bill or check as it’s considered rude in Mexico for serving staff to bring the bill before it’s requested. If you are dining with a large group (usually 8 or more) the restaurant may add a service charge to your bill automatically so check for this before you add your tip. This is usually indicated at the bottom of a menu if the restaurant does this, or it will be indicated on your bill.

BARS : A tip of 10-15% or $1/15-20 pesos per drink is appropriate at a bar. In some places, you’ll find a “tip jar” on the bar and others you can give the tip to your server directly.

TAXIS:  A tip is normal only if the driver helps with bags and would normally be 10 pesos per bag. But a tip for good service is always appreciated.

Paying with a credit or debit card is very common, but smaller vendors may only deal with cash and some places will only accept cards with a chip, so if yours doesn’t have one, it might be worth asking your provider if you can get a replacement card. Paying in dollars is acceptable in tourist areas, but if you are going further afield, peso should be carried.

BANKS & ATMS

Finding an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) will not be too difficult in San Miguel, with machines close to each terminal. We’ve pinned several other banks and ATMs that are near the terminal to the map below.

GETTING AROUND COZUMEL

If your ship docks at Punta Langosta you will be right in the heart of San Miguel within walking distance of towns attractions. If you dock at the other terminals, San Miguel is a 10-15 minute taxi ride away, which should cost about $8 for up to 4 people.

To go a little further, taxi rates are fixed for 1-4, 5 and 6-8 passengers to many of the most popular tourist spots on the island. There will typically be taxis waiting at the terminal, especially during peak embarkation and disembarkation times.

Another option is to rent a scooter or a jeep/buggy and set out to explore the island on your own. This is a great way to get to the   attractions   of the island in a fun way.

COZUMEL WEATHER

In general, you’ll find the climate very similar year-round with temperatures ranging from 70°F to mid 80°F throughout the year. A cold day in Cozumel means it has dipped down to mid 50°F! Humidity is worst in August and September and this also brings an increased chance of thunderstorms which typically don’t last too long.

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

There are many festivals held in Cozumel, so it’s worth checking to see if anything is on whilst you are in port. Big annual events include   Carnaval de Cozumel which is normally held in February , The 150-year-old  El Cedral festival held in May in the village of  Cedral  and the famous Day of the Dead in November.

As these are big events for Cozumel, if you are planning a cruise during these times it is best to plan accordingly as places will be busier than normal.

Also, keep these dates in mind if you want to join in the fun, or come another time to enjoy a quieter Cozumel.

While you’ll have plenty to eat aboard your cruise, you shouldn’t give up the chance to try some of the great things Cozumel has to offer.

Being on the coast, fresh seafood is a given and where better to try some Mexican food than Mexico!

New Especias  – Delicious Italian and seafood options in the heart of San Miguel.

Kondesa  – Providing a modern take on classic Mexican dishes, Kondesa is just a short walk from the Punta Langosta Pier.

Cozumel is a shoppers paradise and the cruise companies will no doubt sell hard about where to get the best deals and supply booklets of vouchers for discounts. Of course, they want you to visit those shops for a reason and those discounts are no doubt built into the asking prices.

Y ou should find better bargains if you head to smaller independent shops rather than the glitzy showrooms that dominate the port areas.

Items that Cozumel is known for are pure vanilla extract, which is a great purchase for any friends who bake, hammocks, handmade wool blankets and jewellery.

Cozumel – Mexico

Welcome to the Cozumel Cruise Port Guide. Cozumel is the largest Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea. The main town on the island is called San Miguel. The island lies 19 km / 12 miles in front of Playa del Carmen on the mainland. Cozumel is a perfect destination for those looking for beaches, shopping, scuba diving and snorkelling. But for those interested in history instead of beaches you are at the right spot as well! The island has a number of Mayan ruines like San Gervasi and you could even visit the famous Chichen Itza when your ship is in port in Cozumel.

Cruise Port Guide Cozumel – Mexico: docked

Puerta Maya Pier and TMM International Pier: generally used by Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, AIDA, Holland America Line and Costa Cruises

These cruise docks are about 1/2 mile away from each other (see map above). The dock is about 5 miles south of the main town San Miguel. Here you will find a large cruise centre with all you cruise, shopping and tourist facilities right there! Find well known retailers as Del Sol, Diamonds International and Piranha Joe’s right there at the cruise centre. You will even find a pharmacy, convenience access and a special excursion pier here. If you don’t want to stick around the cruise centre you can take a taxi south (5 minute ride south) to the beaches, beach clubs and marine park. You can also take a take north (10 minute ride) to the downtown shopping area.

Punta Langosta pier: generally used by Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney, Princess and Voyager of the seas

This dock is located in the city centre of San Miguel. From here it’s a pretty 1,5 mile walk to the city’s bars, restaurants and downtown San Miguel along the nice waterfront promenade. Some of the things to do is the San Miguel Walking Tour and of course shopping should be on your list as well! At about 10 minutes drive you will find the Chankannab National Park as well as several beaches. At less than 5 minutes you will find the Playa Azul. Car Rentals can be found at 5 blocks from the pier you will find a car rental (Smart Car and Alamo).

Funded: tender pier

This actually means you wont be docking at all, but you will tendering. Often the San Miguel pier is used as a tender pier. This is also the pier of the ferry’s between Playa Del Carmen and the island. There are plenty of taxis here and you are within easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants and bars.

Taxis at Cozumel

You will find plenty of taxis at the cruise terminals. All drivers are required to carry a rates card. Most of them speak proper English. Taxi prices underneath are an estimation of a one way journey and should be used as a guideline when negotiating. Prices are per taxi up to 4 people: Downtown = 95 pesos or 8 US dollar Mercado = 100 pesos or 8 US dollar Chankanaab park = 150 pesos or 11 US dollar Playa Uvas = 150 pesos or 11 US dollar Playa Corona = 160 pesos or 12 US dollar Airport = 190 pesos or 15 US dollar South Point = 720 pesos or 45 US dollar Mayan Ruins = 720 pesos or 45 US dollar Island Tour = 800 pesos or 50 US dollar

Ferries to Playa del Carmen

You can take a ferry to the mainland at the San Miguel Passenger Ferry Pier in downtown San Miguel. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. Ferries go about every hour. Keep in mind the schedule could change without notice. Tickets cost between around 12 US dollar per adult and 7 US dollar per child.

Cozumel offers several docking locations for cruise ships. Puerto Maya & TMM cruise pier is one of those locations. It is the most southern dock of all. They are located at about 5 miles south of San Miguel. You will find these cruise docks offer great services in the cruise terminal in front of the dock. The cruise dock of Punta Langosta is the most Northern cruise dock on the island. From here it is about 1,5 mile walk to the city center of San Miguel, but you will find lots of facilities like restaurants, bars, shops and car rental near the cruise area. How Safe is Cozumel?

Pesos, American Dollars – there are ATMs located at the piers which will distribute money in pesos or dollars, but the fees are quite high. Also, the “exchange rate” seems to change depending on the store or restaurant. Always make sure you have small bills for tipping and don’t be afraid to barter.

Wireless Internet:

Most cafes and restaurants have free wi-fi for their patrons. Just ask for the password.

Where You Dock in Cozumel, Mexico

There are 3 piers in Cozumel:

International Pier – 2.5 miles south of San Miguel – you can walk, but taxis are everywhere. If you have mobility issues, it’s a bit of a walk from the ship to the pier stores, but there are locals with wheelchairs that will wheel you for a tip.

Puerta Maya – Carnival’s pier – 5 miles from San Miguel – you’ll need a taxi to get into town.

Punta Langosta – located downtown San Miguel. It’s a short walk to many great shops and restaurants in San Miguel. There is a shopping complex with a Starbucks right at the pier.

Getting Around Cozumel, Mexico

Taxis are plentiful in Cozumel. Drivers must speak English and it is wise to agree on a fare before getting in the taxi, otherwise the fares are not consistent (we were charged $6 USD to get from International Pier to downtown and $15 to get back from the same spot – our own fault). It’s typically cheaper when you flag down a taxi than hiring one from a taxi stand. Also, taxi drivers may not allow “carpooling” if a few different parties are trying to get to the same spot, and you may have to wait for another taxi.

Car Rental in Cozumel

Hertz and Avis both have car rental locations in Cozumel but there are a few things to know:

1) Buy the insurance from the car rental company. US insurance often doesn’t cover both collision & liability in Mexico, and if an accident happens, you may have to pay the cost in cash before leaving the island and then recoup the cost from your insurance company any home. Take pictures of the car and any scratches or dents before leaving the car rental lot to ensure you’re not held liable.

2) Parking is regulated. If you park in a no parking zone, you may end up with a tire lock clamped on your car. Lots and streets have parking meters.

3) There are only 3 gas stations in Cozumel, and none on the far side of the island. Make sure your tank is full before heading outside of San Miguel.

4) Driving can be a free-for-all. Watch for mopeds and pedestrians. There are many one-way streets that aren’t clearly marked. Take note of which way cars are parked before turning down a street. Streets running North & South have the right of way and streets going East & West must stop at intersections (even if not marked).

Ferry to Playa Del Carmen

There is a ferry that runs to Mexico’s mainland, to the town of Playa Del Carmen. It’s a 45 minute ride, with the ferries running every hour, but it’s advised to check the schedule. The cost is around $13/adult. The ride is often quite choppy, but day trips to the mainland’s Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum are popular with cruise passengers.

Shopping In Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is known for its silver (tax-free), vanilla, tequila and Mexican arts and crafts. They also have many pharmacies that see inexpensive over-the-counter medication. Be prepared for every vendor to call to you to come into their store, often with some sort of “promotion.” Bartering is expected so don’t fall for the first bargain you see.

Royal Village Shopping Center

Located across the street from International Pier, the Royal Village Shopping Center is a modern mall offering outlets such as Nike, Mont Blanc & Lacoste.

Punta Langosta Mall

Located at the Punta Langosta pier downtown, there are jewelry stores, high quality souvenir shops, clothing stores as well as Senor Frogs, Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters and Starbucks.

Los Cinco Soles

Near Pancho’s Backyard restaurant, Los Cinco Soles offers quality silver, fashions and unique, handmade Mexican crafts and also has a tequila bar when you’re tired of shopping.

There is no shortage of things to do once your ship docks in Cozumel Mexico. Here are a few of our recommendations:

The best beaches are located on the west side of the island where the sea is usually much calmer. Make sure you take your sunscreen!

Palancar Reef – part of the Meso-American Barrier Reef – visibility can reach 250 feet in some spots!

La Ceiba Reef – explore a sunken airplane which was blown up during the filming of a movie

Mayan Ruins

The majority of the Mayan Ruins are located on the Mexican mainland, but Cozumel has a small site: San Gervasio. Once a ceremonial center for Ixchel, the fertility goddess, it is located about 7 miles from San Miguel.

Cozumel Cruise Port Guide Info

Bienvenidos a Cozumel, one of the most popular Caribbean cruise destinations and a beautiful Mexican island located off the eastern coast of Yucatan Peninsula, part of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo. The island is separated from the mainland by Cozumel Chanel and faces Puerto del Carmen on the opposite side. You can get to the mainland by ferries that run regularly several times daily (the ferry ride lasts around 45 minutes), and there are many mainland shore excursions organized by both cruise lines and independent tour operators that you can join. The island of Cozumel is small and the capital city is San Miguel de Cozumel, located in the proximity of the cruise terminals. The economy of Cozumel mainly relies on the cruise industry, and the island’s infrastructure was built to suit the needs of cruise passengers coming to Cozumel. Thus, the island boasts a wide variety of adventure and animal parks, tourist resorts, shopping malls, exotic bars, authentic Mexican restaurants, and more.

Due to a large number of cruise ships coming to Cozumel on daily basis, the island has three cruise terminals: Punta Langosta, International Cruise Terminal, and Puerta Maya.  Punta Langosta is the terminal closest to the San Miguel downtown, within only a few minutes walking distance, and is mainly used by ferries and several cruise lines such as NCL, Disney, MSC, Silversea, Oceania, and a few others (keep in mind that docking place can change, and check with your cruise line where your ship will dock).

Upon exiting the terminal area, turn right and after a 10-minute walk, you’ll reach a wonderful waterfront boardwalk filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. There are some unique sculptures you can explore there, such as Coral Reef Monument and Birds Monument, as well as Museo de Cozumel, a history museum consisting of archaeological artifacts and exhibits on Cozumel history. A part of the museum belongs to the restaurant offering delicious Mexican specialties and stunning views of the ocean. In the vicinity of the terminal, there is Punta Langosta Mall, a two-story building featuring popular brand shops such as Diamond International, souvenir stores, a cinema, and a variety of coffee shops and dining places. You can simply roam San Miguel’s bustling streets, explore its markets, parks, and enjoy its rich tourist offer. Within a 10-minute walk from the terminal, on your left side, you can spot many beach bars offering nice sea views, among which the most popular one is No Name Bar – the favorite bar of many crew members, boasting a pool, great food, relaxed atmosphere, and cool vibes.  On the other hand, two other cruise terminals are located further away. Both International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya are located around 5 km (3 mi) away from San Miguel, whereas the distance between the two terminals is only about 500 m (less than a 10-minute walk).  International Cruise Terminal has two berths and is mostly used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise lines.

It has a large terminal area featuring various shops, tour operator stands, bars, restaurants, among which Margaritaville, located right in front of your ship, is the most popular one. It’s usually packed with people dancing salsa and having shots of tequila, eating tasty food, and enjoying the lively restaurant’s atmosphere. This is the favorite place for many cruise passengers and the perfect spot to either begin or end your day in Cozumel. Across the street, there is a shopping mall – Mercado Popular Cozumel, and plenty of places to eat, drink, and shop. Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal is normally used by Carnival Corporation cruise ships (Carnival, Princess, Costa, and others) and is located at a stone’s throw from the International Terminal. It is the largest cruise terminal of all three and boasts a large shopping area consisting of over fifty shops where you can find both authentic Mayan souvenirs and brand stores, many cafes, bars, and restaurants, the most famous one being Three Amigos bar, located at the exit of the pier.

If you search for a nice beach, one of the most popular ones is Paradise beach, located within a 10-15 minute driving distance from San Miguel, toward the south of the island. Paradise beach is a famous beach resort featuring a pool area, a restaurant, a bar, a beautiful beach as well as various water sport activities.

Located nearby, Playa Mia is another large beach resort, the most visited one when it comes to cruise ship guests. It has a large buffet-style restaurant, several beach bars, gift shops, and offers culinary and tequila mixing classes where you get to cook your own Mexican food and prepare margaritas. In the vicinity, another beach bar, Carlos & Charlies, guarantees you fantastic food, great beach facilities, and positive tropical vibes!

Cozumel Mexico

The Cozumel cruise port is located on Cozumel Island that is part of Mexico and lies off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is known for fishing, diving and water sports. This destination became popular in the 1960s after Jacques Cousteau mentioned in a documentary that the place was the most beautiful place in the world for snorkeling.

Although the port of Cozumel hosts, on some days, up to 8 ships, only a third of the island has been developed and tropical forests and golden beaches have been preserved. According to legend, Cozumel was inhabited by Ixchel, the goddess of love and fertility. Several Mayan sites are located on the island. Xcaret is an activity park with shows, a small archaeological site, a folk art museum, animals, fish and birds and water activities. This site is located near Playa del Carmen on the coast of Mexico.

Not far from the Museo de Cozumel is the tiny but mighty Burritos Gorditos. Serving burritos, guacamole, quesadillas, and breakfast on the island, this small shop commits to a no-frills, cash only approach. Sit on one of the restaurant’s multicolored chairs while you enjoy what some call the best burritos in Cozumel.

Culture & History of the Cozumel Cruise Port

When the Mayans settled in Cozumel two thousand years ago, they dedicated the town to the Mayan goddess of fertility and love, Ixchel. The word “Cozumel” means “Land of the Swallow” in Mayan, symbolizing Ixchel’s favorite bird. Spanish settlers didn’t visit Cozumel until the 16th century, when the Cortés expedition traveled through. In 1520, Spanish crew members brought smallpox to Cozumel, devastating the Mayan population.

Cozumel’s popularity as a tourism destination skyrocketed in the 1960s when word of the island’s scuba diving potential traveled through the grapevine. Diving and charter fishing became central to the economy of the island. Today, Cozumel is a major port of call, welcoming over a million cruise passengers annually.

Cozumel Port Facilities & Location

The Cozumel cruise port is on the Western side of the island, where there happen to be three piers in total. The International Pier is one of the oldest and most-trafficked port areas. It’s about two miles to reach San Miguel, which you can access either on foot with a long walk or take a ten-minute taxi ride from the cruise port terminal. You’ll find food, shopping, and complimentary WiFi beyond the terminal.

Transportation in Cozumel

You can rent a car while in Cozumel to get to the far reaches of the island, including some of the nature excursions and harder-to-reach parks. For daredevils, a scooter or bicycle is an exciting way to navigate the island. Helmets required. Then, of course, there are plenty of taxis at the cruise terminal and around the island. Taxi drivers know their value on the island, so be sure to settle on a fare before you drive off. Of course, it’s easy to explore areas surrounding the port on foot if you feel like stretching your sea legs during your stop in Cozumel.

Shopping Near the Cozumel Cruise Port

After you disembark from the cruise ship, particularly at International Pier, you’ll find duty-free shops and souvenir shacks before you leave the terminal. The Royal Village Shopping Center is also conveniently located near International Pier, where you can purchase handmade goods, jewelry, and other items. San Miguel also has plentiful shopping just two or three miles away from International Pier.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Though the local currency is the peso, many stores will accept U.S. dollars (USD), so you likely won’t need to exchange money. Find ATMs near the cruise docks for all your withdrawal needs. Tipping is encouraged, particularly for bartenders, tour guides, and restaurant service. A tip of 15-20% is recommended.

Welcome to Cozumel cruise port!

Nestled off the northeastern coast of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel is an island of cheerful people, salsa vibes, stunning nature, and rich Mayan cultural heritage. The port of Cozumel ranks among the largest and most visited ports in the Caribbean.

Cozumel Cruise Port

Due to the large number of cruise liners coming to Cozumel daily, Cozumel cruise port consists of 3 cruise terminals , located within walking/short driving distance of each other.

One of them (Punta Langosta) is located in Cozumel’s capital city – San Miguel de Cozumel, whereas the other two (International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya) are situated within less than a 10-minute driving distance from the town.

1. Punta Langosta Cruise Terminal

This terminal is located within walking distance of San Miguel downtown and its main attractions, shops, bars, and restaurants. The cruise lines such as Disney, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Silversea, Marella Cruises , and several others normally dock here (this can change, though, so always check beforehand).

Upon exiting the cruise terminal, you’ll spot a long street filled with shopping malls, souvenir stores, cafes, restaurants, and several historic landmarks. If you turn right, within a short distance, you will reach some of the best ocean-view cafes and bars, such as No Name Bar, crew members’ favorite spot with pool facilities, fantastic food, Caribbean vibes, and a laid-back atmosphere.

Some great eateries and hotels are located here, including Rock ‘n Java Bar & grill, Subway, Hotel Barracuda , Jeanie’s (restaurant), Rolandi’s (Italian restaurant), El Muellecito (Seafood restaurant), La Internacional Cerveceria (great craft beer!), Cozumel Palace 4-star hotel resort and El Cantil Condominiums.  Here, you’ll also find car rentals, tour operator offices, shopping malls, and beautiful parks.

If you turn left upon exiting the Punta Langosta cruise terminal, you’ll spot a long boardwalk offering fantastic sea views, lined with shopping malls, brand stores (Tanzanite International, EFFY, Victoria’s Secret, Cartier, Del Sol), souvenir shops, hotel resorts , tour booths, restaurants, and bars (Hard Rock café).

Here, you can explore some historic landmarks and monuments, such as the Coral Reefs Monument, the Mexican War Memorial, the Birds Monument, and the Museum of Cozumel. Housed in a beautiful bright building overlooking the sea, the museum features a large collection of artifacts and exhibits on the island’s history and an amazing restaurant where you can indulge in the Mexican specialties while enjoying the stunning ocean views.

In front of the Punta Langosta cruise terminal, you can find shops, bars, restaurants (Diamond International, Starbucks), Punta Langosta Mall with a cinema, and a bit further away – the historic landmarks (Iglesia de San Miguel), markets, and parks. Taxis are everywhere, prices are reasonable, however, I would suggest you always agree on the price first.

Explore Cozumel tours and activities

Cozumel Ferry – The main ferry terminal is located within a 5-minute walk from Punta Langosta and offers daily ferry transportation between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. It is easy to find, just turn left upon exiting the Punta Langosta terminal and you’ll spot the ferries close by.

There are two ferry companies providing round-trip transport from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen: Winjet and Ultramar . The ride takes about 40 minutes one-way (or less, depending on the company), and ferries run every hour (sometimes they run less frequently, make sure you check the Cozumel Ferry Schedule for more details).

When you are buying the ferry ticket, make sure you buy a one-way ticket , as the companies don’t accept each other’s tickets. You can check the cost and ferry schedule on Winjet and Ultramar’s official websites.

Note: Although the official currency in Cozumel is the Mexican Peso (MXN), U.S. dollars are widely accepted. 1 USD equals 16.80 MXN. 

Ferries are double-deckers, modernly equipped, and feature a cafeteria where you can buy coffee and snacks. Keep in mind that a ferry ride can be extremely bumpy (when I say extremely, I mean that I’ve seen dozens of people throwing up each time I went to the mainland), so seasickness pills are highly recommended. Normally they give you a plastic bag upon embarking.

On the mainland side, the ferry docks a 5-minute walk from Playa del Carmen city center and its shopping streets, attractions, bars, and restaurants. Plaza Playacar is the place where you usually meet your tour guides for the mainland tours, and it is located within a 5-minute walk from the main square.

2. International Cruise Terminal

This terminal is located less than a 10-minute drive from San Miguel de Cozumel downtown (around 4 km/2.5 miles). It consists of two piers and is usually used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships.

In front of the terminal, you’ll spot a spacious area featuring a large Margaritaville, usually filled with cheerful people dancing salsa, drinking tequila, or eating delicious Mexican food. There are plenty of tour booths, shops, several bars, and restaurants (Bar Mandy, Senor Frog’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp…) in this area. This is where you meet your tour operators when joining the shore excursions. Normally they hold the signs with tour names, so you can easily spot them.

If you are taking the mainland tour, the ferry picks you up at the pier (no need to go to the San Miguel ferry terminal). However, if you decide to go to the mainland on your own, you need to take a taxi to the ferry terminal in San Miguel. The taxi ride lasts less than 10 minutes.

Upon exiting the terminal area, you’ll see many taxi vehicles and mini-buses, as well as large Mercado Popular and Royal Village shopping malls. This area is packed with brand stores (Tag Heuer, Diamonds International, Harley Davidson) and fabulous bars/restaurants (Hard Rock café).

3. Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal

This cruise terminal is located a 5-minute walking distance from the International Cruise Terminal and a 10-minute drive from San Miguel de Cozumel. Puerta Maya is the largest of all terminals and Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock here ( Carnival, Princess, Costa…).

The terminal consists of three piers. Here you’ll find over fifty brand stores (Cariloha and Del Sol, Tanzanite International…) and shops selling souvenirs and authentic handicrafts, as well as restaurants and bars (Three Amigos is one of the most popular ones – it offers a great selection of tequilas, beers, and yummy food).

In this area, you meet your tour operators for the tours, and ferries normally come to the terminal to pick up the cruise passengers joining the ship shore excursions.

When you exit the terminal, you’ll see large parking with many taxis, a few shopping malls, restaurants, and a flea market.

A Guide to the Cozumel Cruise Port

If your Western Caribbean cruise visits Mexico, chances are, you’ll have a stop at the Cozumel cruise port – one of the major cruise ports in Mexico. This popular cruise ship port offers lots of activities and tourist attractions for families, whether you choose to stay in the port area, book an official cruise line excursion, or adventure off on your own unofficial excursion.

Cozumel is an island located off the Yucatan Peninsula in the Quintana Roo state of Mexico. It is officially an island, so you’ll have to take a ferry boat to get to the Mexican mainland.

However, there are many excursions, beautiful beaches, duty-free shops, and beach clubs right there, so you don’t have to leave the island. Cozumel is located across from Playa Del Carmen and Akumal and is in the Caribbean Sea.

We’ve had the opportunity to visit the Cozumel Mexico cruise port three times – once on the Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy , once on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas , and once on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas.

As an island, it’s quieter than some of the more popular areas in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, like Cancun. It is beautiful though, with plenty of things to do and see, so it’s a great place to visit on your cruise.

My sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas was complimentary. Activities in Cozumel were not included.

About the Cozumel Port Area

There are several cruise ship docks and ports in Cozumel – therefore, it can accommodate quite a few ships. If you are taking a taxi ride, be sure to make note of the port you are at so you can get back. However, many of the taxi drivers will know which ship is at which port for the day.

The amenities at each port will vary, but they all have the basics. You’ll be able to get a taxi at any of them. Unless you do some research in advance, you generally won’t be told which of the cruise terminals you are docking at – just that you are visiting Cozumel.

In some cases, you may need to take a tender boat to the port, but that is uncommon. Most ships visiting Cozumel will dock at one of the three ports.

The Mexican Peso is the currency in Cozumel. However, US dollars are accepted, so you probably won’t need to change money. We recommend bringing cash for tips and cabs.

The Puerta Maya pier generally hosts Carnival ships. It has restaurants, bars, and shops, including the usual cruise port staples like Del Sol and Diamonds International. The Puerta Maya cruise port does have a website with lots of helpful information, as well as a schedule of which cruise ships dock there.

The International Cruise Terminal hosts 40% of the cruise ships that dock in Cozumel. Cruise lines that utilize the International Pier include Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Celebrity. It also has duty-free shopping and restaurants in the Royal Village Shopping Center and is where you’ll find the more popular cruise ship restaurant staples, like Senor Frogs, the Hard Rock Cafe, and Margaritaville.

The third cruise terminal is the Punta Langosta, which is closest to the main city of San Miguel de Cozumel (also the largest city). It also offers a shopping area. Cruise lines that utilize the Punta Langosta pier include the Norwegian, MSC, and Holland America.

On the two times that we’ve been to Cozumel, we’ve docked at the International Terminal. There’s enough to do at the port that you could just stay in that area. If you are planning to take a cab, you’ll want to carefully follow the signs for the cabs. We found that it was a little tricky to locate the exit and the taxi stand – they like you to stay in the port to shop!

Things To Do in Cozumel

Want to do something within Cozumel but beyond the cruise port? There are lots of options. You can choose to book an official shore excursion or do something on your own.

The official shore excursions offered by the cruise line are generally available to book in advance and do sell out. These can be the best for your peace of mind because the tour operator will make sure you are back on the ship in time for departure.

If you are on your own, you’ll have more flexibility but have to be responsible for getting back to the ship in time.

All the cruise lines offer shore excursions, but the options will vary by ship, but some options include ATV rides, the Mayan ruins and archaeological sites, (San Gervasio and El Cedral), dolphin encounters, snorkeling, and a tour of the Mayan Cacao Company . Availability for kids may vary by age.

The Discover Mexico Cultural Park, which we visited during our Disney Cruise Line sailing, has unfortunately been permanently closed. It was one of the main attractions for families, so it’s a big loss.

Another of the more popular tourist destinations is Chankanaab, an adventure park. It offers a beach, animal shows, snuba, swimming with dolphins, a spa, and more. It’s one of the best places to visit in Cozumel.

Beach Clubs In Cozumel

When I visit the Caribbean on a cruise, I usually want to visit a beach. The beaches in the Caribbean are my favorites, and there are some fantastic options. You’ll usually see beach breaks included in the official excursions. They often include transportation and lunch.

For our most recent trip to Cozumel, we decided to book a day pass at a beach club on our own. Two options consistently came up in our searches, Mr. Sancho and Nachi Cocom. Both of these require you to book directly with them, and you’ll need to take local taxis on both ends of your trip. They are about 15-20 minutes from the cruise ports.

Mr. Sanchos is a private beach club offering an all-inclusive experience. Reservations are accepted in advance and are highly recommended. With the all-inclusive pass, you can eat from the buffet, receive unlimited drinks, get the use of beach loungers and umbrellas, and use lockers and restrooms. Other experiences are available for an additional cost, including massages, entrance to the aquatic park, horseback riding, and more.

Guests visiting Mr. Sanchos should bring pool towels from their ship. Otherwise, they are available for an additional rental fee.

Mr. Sanchos is very popular and can get busy when there are many ships in port for the day. It’s recommended that you book in advance.

Nachi Cocom

During our Royal Caribbean cruise this winter, we decided to book a day at Nachi Cocom Beach Club and Water Sports Center. I loved this experience and would visit Nachi Cocom on our next cruise stop in Cozumel.

Nachi Cocom only accepts 130 guests daily. Because of that, it never feels crowded. However, you will want to reserve as early as possible. There are often many cruise ship passengers in port, so things book up quickly. You’ll leave a deposit with your reservation and pay the balance once you arrive (credit cards are accepted).

We exited our ship at our leisure once we docked, and found our way to the cab line outside the port. After a 15-minute taxi ride, we arrived at Nachi Cocom. Like at Mr. Sanchos, you’ll want to bring towels off your cruise ship.

After paying the balance of our day pass, we were guided to a set of chairs and an umbrella. It was beachfront, with easy access to the water, the restrooms, and a bar. Right away, our drink order was taken, and we settled in to enjoy the beach.

Water sports, including banana boat rides and glass-bottom boats, as well as massages, are offered for an additional fee. The all-inclusive fee includes drinks, beach access, free WiFi, a pool, a hot tub, restrooms, outdoor showers, and more.

Around lunchtime, we received menus listing all of the meal options. We were able to choose four courses from the menu, which offers Mexican and American specialties. While I opted for seafood, including ceviche and grilled fish, my kids were happy to have more familiar American options.

We enjoyed our day at Nachi Cocom. It’s an absolutely beautiful beach, and the capacity restrictions made it peaceful and quiet. The drinks and service were also fantastic. While the beach is gorgeous, we also enjoyed spending some time at the pool, which was very quiet that day.

The water sports staff do come by to show you options. If you want to book something, you can do it at that time.

When we were ready to leave, our server ordered us a cab. It arrived after a short time, with plenty of time for us to get back to the ship. I’d recommend planning this process a little early, just to make sure you make it.

Our swimsuits were dry once we were ready to leave. But if you’d prefer to change out of your bathing suits, you should bring along a change of clothes in your beach bag. You’ll also want to bring cash to pay for the cab (both ways) and to tip the staff at Nachi Cocom. We used US dollars for both.

You’ll be dropped off in the same area where you picked up your cab. If you leave enough time, you can do some shopping in the port or can go right back to the ship.
