Crocodile mangrove reviews.

Nestled in the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, this tour was nothing short of amazing, offering us a front-row seat to the vibrant jungle life! Our guide, Jose, was the star of the show. His extensive knowledge about Costa Rica's ecosystems and wildlife was evident, and his enthusiasm was contagious. He expertly navigated us through the mangroves, ensuring we had the best views while maintaining a respectful distance from the crocs. It was more than just a tour; it was an immersive educational journey that deepened our appreciation for nature and wildlife. We left with unforgettable memories and a newfound respect for the natural world. Kudos to Jose and the team for an outstanding experience!
Excellent tour, very pleasant and knowledgeable guide. Would highly recommend.
We had a fantastic time on the Crocodile boat tour with our family. It was perfect for all ages. We saw so many different types of birds and lots of different sizes of crocodiles. Ariel was our tour guide and he was fantastic, he really engaged with our kids and kept it very exciting. Highly recommend. The staff was so friendly.

Best thing about Jaco! I highly recommend this company for tours. We had a blast over multiple days with Adventure Tours Costa Rica. We went on a monkey tour, a crocodile tour and spent a full day on ATVs in the jungle. The staff was professional and super friendly. Everyone in our group enjoyed themselves!

The Tárcoles River winds from the mountains of the Central Valley down the Pacific slope and eventually drains into the Gulf of Nicoya. Though spanning a long 111 kilometers (69 miles), this river is best known for one particular stretch that crosses the Pacific coastal highway. Every day hundreds of tourists en route to destinations like Jacó and Manuel Antonio  stop along Route 34 at the Tárcoles River Bridge to see the giant crocodiles below. We wanted to get a closer look so we recently took a boat tour up the Tárcoles River.

Jose's Crocodile Man Tour Picture | Two Weeks in Costa Rica

What to Expect

The crocodiles.

Our adventure began in the late afternoon. We met José Eduardo and his first mate, Jimmy, at the docks in Tárcoles, a small fishing village along the Central Pacific Coast. As everyone on the tour got on the boat and took their seats, José introduced himself and told us that we would be seeing a lot of crocodiles today. Within minutes, he had held true to his promise. The gray-green snout of a gigantic croc suddenly rose out of the water. As the 16-foot creature awkwardly crawled up the riverbank, José told us that its name was “Shakira.” Apparently, crocodiles are very territorial so José and Jimmy have gotten to know many of them and even name them based on their characteristics. This particular female croc was said to move her hips back and forth when coming on and off the riverbank, hence the name Shakira.

Jose's Crocodile Man Tour | Two Weeks in Costa Rica

José spotted several more crocodiles as we ventured farther up the river. We saw a short, stocky one named Danny Devito, another female called Nicole Richie, and a small three-foot long baby basking in the sun. Everyone on the tour gasped as Jimmy jumped off the boat onto the riverbank to get closer to one of these intimidating creatures. Keeping his eye on a huge croc named Miley Cyrus, Jimmy slowly approached, stepping carefully through the mud and facing the croc the whole time. José told us that if Jimmy turned his back and tried to run, the seemingly lazy croc could spring into action and Jimmy would be in serious trouble. Luckily that didn’t happen and soon Jimmy was safely back in the boat. For us onlookers, it was amazing to be able to see these scaly beasts so close up in the wild, with our boat pulled right up next to them.

Crocodile Tour Guide | Two Weeks in Costa Rica

The crocs were definitely a highlight of the tour, but as bird lovers, we also really enjoyed the birding. In the shrubs and trees along the riverbanks, José would point out different kinds of birds, many of which can be difficult to find in Costa Rica. He even called some of them in by whistling loudly. Crested Caracara, Black Hawks, Magnificent Frigatebirds, Anhinga, Snowy Egret, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Black-necked Stilts, Ringed Kingfisher, Northern Jaçana, and four types of Heron (Green, Little Blue, Great Blue, and Bare-throated Tiger) were just a few of the many we spotted. We were also fortunate to see some bright red, yellow, and blue Scarlet Macaw parrots flying overhead in pairs. These beautiful birds have an extremely limited range and it is always special to see them. José was very knowledgeable about the different species. Later in the tour, he even managed to turn up a Roseate Spoonbill, which had been on our must-see list for a long time. We learned that this rare avian is the only pink bird in Costa Rica and gets it color from eating shrimp.

Black-necked Stilt | Two Weeks in Costa Rica

As the sun began to sink into the Pacific, we made our way up a narrow finger of the river. Thick mangroves surrounded us and the water turned to a shade of jade green. At one point, Jimmy slowed the boat to a crawl and steered into a passage with only a few feet to spare on each side. They wanted to show us the red mangrove crab, which can be seen on Costa Rica’s colorful five mil bill alongside a white-faced monkey and mangrove flower.

Mangroves Tarcoles River | Two Weeks in Costa Rica

The scenery during the entire tour was amazing. Mountains covered in green formed the backdrop, locals fished from the riverbanks, and cows eyed us curiously from under an umbrella ficus tree. Birds like White Ibis gathered in the tall mangroves, getting ready for nightfall.

As we headed back to the dock, we stopped in the middle of the river outlet for sunset. As a bonus, the 4:00 p.m. tour includes sunset and we were fortunate to have a spectacular one. The sky turned from clear azure to bright orange with a few wispy clouds. As the boat bobbed in the gentle waves, everyone made sure to get some photos to remember the day.

Tips on Selecting the Ideal Crocodile Tour in Costa Rica:

Choosing a suitable crocodile tour in Costa Rica is essential for an enriching and safe experience, blending adventure with a profound respect for nature. To ensure you select the best tour offering excitement and educational value, consider the following integrated guidelines covering safety, expertise, conservation ethics, and practical booking advice.

  • Emphasize Safety : Opt for tours that prioritize the safety of both participants and wildlife. This means choosing operators that provide thorough safety briefings and high-quality safety gear and maintain a respectful distance from the crocodiles.
  • Guide Expertise : The experience and knowledge of your guide are pivotal. Look for tours led by guides with specialized training in ecology or biology and a passion for conservation, ensuring your tour is both informative and respectful towards wildlife.
  • Conservation Ethics : Support tour operators committed to conservation and responsible wildlife viewing. Those who actively contribute to crocodile conservation efforts and educate tourists about the ecological importance of crocodiles help sustain the region’s natural heritage.
  • Booking Your Tour : The best time for a crocodile tour is during the dry season, from December to April when crocodiles are more easily spotted. However, booking in advance is recommended year-round to secure your spot. Review options, read feedback, and check for conservation affiliations to make an informed choice. Costs vary, but investing in a reputable tour supports ethical wildlife tourism.
  • Consider Personal Needs and Group Size : Tailor your tour choice to your interests, such as photography or birdwatching, and requirements. Smaller group sizes ensure a more personal experience and minimize environmental impact, enhancing wildlife observation opportunities.
  • Ethical Considerations : Always follow the instructions of your guide for a safe and respectful wildlife tour. Maintain a safe distance from the crocodiles, avoid feeding them, and choose responsible operators that align with your conservation values. Educate yourself and others about the importance of crocodile conservation and advocating for ethical wildlife encounters.

By carefully selecting your crocodile tour with these considerations, you’re set for a memorable journey that respects the natural world.

Villa Firenze Costa Rica

Crocodile Tour

The town of Tarcoles is just north of Jaco Beach and holds one of the largest rivers in the area. This adventure tour takes you along the Tarcoles River which is home to hundreds of crocodiles and other wildlife. The crocodile tour provides an amazing opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the most dangerous animals in Costa Rica. The guides are experts with the crocodiles, the river and the other wildlife in the area. If the tide is right, I recommend this tour during the sunset hours. 10 Tips to KNOW Before Visiting the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

If you’re looking for a unique activity, one of the best things to do in Costa Rica is visit the crocodile bridge!

This bridge passes over the Tarcoles River near Jaco and it’s a great spot to see crocodiles in the wild. Plus, it’s a completely free activity in Jaco !

You’ll often hear this area referred to simply as the ‘Costa Rica crocodile bridge,’ but you might also hear the ‘Jaco crocodile bridge’ to describe this popular spot. In fact, if look up the bridge on Google maps , you’ll see that it is simply tagged as ‘Crocodile Bridge.’

If you’re planning on stopping by during your Costa Rican vacation, you might have a few questions.

After visiting this spot, I have some tips and tricks to share. So, stick around and read on for the things you should know before visiting the Costa Rica crocodile bridge.

1. About the Costa Rica crocodile bridge

Crocodile on the beach of the Tarcoles River

The Costa Rica crocodile bridge is actually a highway bridge, on the Carretera (highway) Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno. This bridge goes over the Tarcoles River and offers an unbelievable view of large saltwater crocodiles.

Since this bridge is open to drive over as part of the highway, the crocodile bridge is completely free to visit. Think of it as a roadside attraction, like your stereotypical ‘World’s Best or Biggest Something.” It’s sort of like that, but instead of a gimmick, you get to see real crocodiles doing their thing.

A hot tourist spot thanks to its incredible views of crocodiles, the Tarcoles River is now the most well-known river in the country. The power of a good viewpoint should never be underestimated!

The river is, unfortunately, one of the most contaminated in the country, as well. However, the location is so important for wildlife that they continue to gravitate toward the Tarcoles, and there are initiatives by both the government and the community to get this important river clean again.

This is a well-known area, so keep in mind that you’re likely to see another car or two (or twenty) around. Not to worry, that’s part of the fun! You’ll get to see some incredible wildlife and might even make a friend or two along the way. Oh, and there’s plenty of space for everyone to get a glimpse of the crocs for as long as you’d like.

2. Where is the Costa Rica crocodile bridge?

Large crocodile on the sand below the Crocodile Bridge near Jaco, costa Rica

You can find this bridge, and its crocodiles, on the Pacific Coast of the country, north of Jaco and south of Punta Arenas.

If you’re based in San José, it’s about an hour west, making it one of the best day trips from San José . If you keep driving on the same highway for 9 more minutes to the west, you’ll be at the ocean.

Its proximity to San José means that the crocodile bridge isn’t just easy for residents of the country to see. You can drive your rental car out to this spot and enjoy the views just like the locals do.

If anything, this is a great place to stop and get out of the car for a bit if you’re headed down to Jaco from San José. The bridge is directly on the route and can serve as a good location to stretch your legs and buy some snacks from the vendors in the area.

If you’re headed to Puntarenas , it’s only a short detour!

3. Is the Costa Rica crocodile bridge free?

The pathway on the side of the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

Since the crocodile bridge is located on a main highway, it is free to visit. That makes it one of our favorite things to do around Jaco !

When it comes to parking, though, you’ll want to be smart. You can park on either side of the bridge and there is free parking around, depending on how busy the area is. Some restaurants nearby will try to charge for parking, so remember that you have options and don’t have to pay to park just because some places say you do.

When I was there, we made a deal with a guy that we would come back and buy a smoothie after we saw the crocodiles. It seemed to make up for parking, and we got a good drink out of it! In most areas like this, if you’re willing to talk to people and are flexible, they’ll work with you.

4. When is the best time to visit the crocodile bridge?

Three crocodiles in the Tarcoles River at the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

If you’re looking for the best experience of this cool pit stop, I recommend going in the morning or even the early afternoon.

We found that there are almost always crocodiles there to see, but when it’s cool when more of them come to the surface near the bridge.

Of course, you’ll likely see crocodiles at any time of the day, but you might have a better view of more crocodiles if you can come earlier in the day.

I’ve also found while traveling that if you can show up somewhere a little earlier in the morning, you’ll beat the crowds and be able to have more of an individual experience.

5. What are the best tours down the Tarcoles River?

Large crocodile swims in the water at the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

When you’re looking for some of the best tours in Costa Rica , there are options to get closer to the Tarcoles River itself. There are some pretty incredible tours offered from multiple locations in the country. What’s great is that you also don’t need a rental car for these, because they’ll include transportation.

So, here are the best tours down the Tarcoles River:

From San José

Staying in San José? Check out this full-day tour of Carara National Park and Tarcoles River . I love this one because it combines hiking trails, birdwatching, getting to learn about the biodiversity of the area, and enjoying a relaxing end to the day on the beach.

If you’re interested in seeing multiple different landscapes of Costa Rica in just one day, this tour is an amazing way to learn about and experience the area for yourself. The local guides are awesome and take great pride in educating guests about all that the country has to offer, even providing binoculars for birdwatching.

The tour doesn’t include everything, though, and you can expect to pay $12 USD for the entrance to the National Park and for the boat tour part of the trip, which costs $28 USD. That’s on top of the $133 USD tour cost.

Some of the earnings of this tour go to a non-profit conservation foundation so you know your visit to these places has helped give back to the nature you’ll be seeing. You can book this tour online here .

From Jaco

If you are staying in Jaco, you’ll already be a little bit closer to the crocodile bridge area, which means that you can opt to take a shorter tour and still have time for other activities during the day!

The  Jaco Crocodile River Cruise  is set up like a safari but on the water. This 3-hour river cruise takes place on a covered boat that allows you to stay out of the sun while you search for crocodiles and native birds with your captain and guide.

Afterward, you’ll get an included lunch to enjoy before heading back to your drop-off location.

Thanks to the shorter length of the trip, this one is a family-friendly option that can provide seats for infants and small children as long as you notify them ahead of time. Tickets are around $89 USD and you can purchase them here .

Tarcoles River Crocodile in the water

From Puntarenas

This tour from Puntarenas  falls somewhere between the lengths of the first two, at 6 hours long. You’ll still get the same few stops that you would if you were on the tour coming from San José because this one includes Carara National Park and the Tarcoles River.

Instead of ending at the beach, you’ll finish the day at El Jardin de Orotina, which is a beautiful complex with shops and a restaurant to enjoy.

Your admission to each site is included in this $135 USD tour, so all you have to worry about is grabbing whatever you want to eat at the lunch stop and then sit back and enjoy the rest of this inclusive trip.

From a nature walk to a crocodile boat tour, the site visits are incredible, but you’ll also enjoy beautiful views of the Costa Rican countryside as you travel through scenic parts of the country. This tour can be booked online in advance here .

From the bridge

Driving yourself but still looking for a tour of the crocodile bridge and its surrounding areas? This  Crocodile Tour  is such a cool option and allows you to see more of the area than if you were to stop off for a few minutes and continue driving.

You’ll meet the group at Mangrove Birding Journeys, just a few minutes off of the highway, and spend 3 hours floating along the Tarcoles and seeing not only huge crocodiles but also numerous species of birds. You can book this tour here online for around $90 USD.

After your tour, since you’ll have your rental car or other transportation, you can head to the beach for the rest of your day or go back into town for a meal.

If you want to stay in the area, check out our guide for places to stay near Jaco . Of course, just remember a tour isn’t required to see the crocodiles, just to get a closer look and learn about them.

6. How do you get to the Costa Rica crocodile bridge?

A man rides a scooter to the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

Driving here is going to be the way to go! Regardless of whether you have a rental car or decide to take a tour from one of the nearby cities, you’ll get a chance to pull off and walk along the bridge while you work to spot any crocs that are wading close by.

There are also buses that you can take separately from tours if you want to check out Costa Rica’s public transportation system.

If you’re coming from Jaco, the 655 Jacó bus will run every 4 hours and takes just 40 minutes to get to the bridge. Just let the bus driver know where you are going.

This same line, 655 Jacó, runs from San José, too, in the opposite direction. So, you could take the bus from either location and then stop at the bridge. On the way back, you’ll need to wait for a bus heading in the other direction. This can take some time, so be patient and get a fruit smoothie!

From San José, the 601 San José bus will take you to Pozón, and from there it’s just a 13-minute taxi to the crocodile bridge.

From Puntarenas, you can get the bus to Jaco and just get off at the crocodile bridge.

Taxis are also not a very expensive option in this case if you’re looking for a direct way to get around without a rental car or tour. For example, you may pay about $50 USD for an hour-long drive across Costa Rica.

One time, we actually rented a scooter for a few hours, which only cost $25 USD. We drove to the bridge and even made some other stops along the way. It was really fun!

Whatever transportation method you choose, know that there are many ways to get to the crocodile bridge so that you can see the Tarcoles River and all its biodiversity.

7. Facilities at the crocodile bridge

Bailey with a smoothie at one of the Costa rica Crocodile Bridge restaurants

There are a few small restaurants in the area to grab a bite at before or after your visit to see the crocodiles. You will also find plenty of shops that sell food, smoothies, and other goods for you to enjoy during your day trip to the area. I found a beautiful sarong.

These restaurants and some of the shops can also be good places to use the restroom, so long as you purchase something, too.

Pops Tarcoles  is a fun ice cream place nearby and serves as a great place to cool off with a sweet treat, especially if you’ve just spent hours on a tour or searching for crocodiles.

Nambi Restaurant  is also a popular spot to grab food and is right on the southeast side of the bridge once you drive over it. If you’re looking for burgers, tacos, fries, and other filling dishes, this place has you covered.

8. Is the Crocodile Bridge suitable for children?

crocodile sits in the water near Jaco

Crocodile bridge is a great spot to bring the kids on your trip. They’ll love getting to see the wildlife, and most of the tours I’ve seen have been great at accommodating kids.

Just keep little ones close and watch them because, while this is a great location for them to experience, the bridge is still part of a highway and has cars coming by quite often.

9. Can you feed the crocodiles/get close to them?

Crocodile below the famous costa Rica Crocodile Bridge

As exciting as it is to see the crocodiles, getting too close to them is a big hazard. Crocodiles are still dangerous animals, and you should never attempt to get close to them. This includes feeding. If you are close enough to try to give them food, you are too close.

Tours take safety precautions that you may not always see the ins and outs of and can allow you a way to feel closer to the animals without being in danger.

When you’re visiting independently, you need to plan on staying on the bridge and enjoying the view from a safe distance.

10. Is visiting the Tarcoles River crocodile bridge worth it?

Close up of a Crocodile at the Jaco crocodile bridge

Yes, I fully recommend stopping by the Tarcoles River and its crocodile bridge – to me, it’s one of the best things to do in Costa Rica !

No matter how you decide to plan your visit, from transportation type to the length of your visit to the area, this is something you won’t want to skip.

Costa Rica has such diverse nature, and driving through the countryside to get to this bridge is half of the fun, in my opinion. You’ll see beautiful landscapes on your way to see even more incredible wildlife.

So, if you’re headed to Costa Rica, the crocodile bridge should be given a spot on your bucket list.

The BEST Things to do in Costa Rica

Bailey at Poas Volcano in Costa Rica

While there are so many fun things to do in Costa Rica , a couple of specific attractions and activities stand out amongst the rest. They are:

Explore Volcanoes

There are some impressive (and beautiful!) volcanoes that you’ll want to check out while you’re here.

Poas Volcano is known for its bright blue crater lake. Poas Volcano is most commonly visited on a day trip from San Jose. This Poas Volcano tour from San Jose is one of the best you can do since it also includes a visit to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens as well as a coffee farm.

Arenal Volcano is also one of Costa Rica’s top attractions. Arenal Volcano is located closest to the town of La Fortuna. You can book this full-day tour from La Fortuna that takes you to the volcano to hike, the famous La Fortuna Waterfall and even a hanging bridge – it’s a full day of adventure!

Chase Waterfalls

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of our favorite waterfalls in all of Costa Rica. You can easily visit it on this full-day tour in La Fortuna that also visits hot springs.

Rio Celeste is another beautiful waterfall that is famous for its bright blue water. Rio Celeste is a popular attraction to visit from Guanacaste Province and this particular tour includes transport from there. Alternatively, you can book this tour from La Fortuna or this tour from San Jose .

See the wildlife

Costa Rica is the place for wildlife lovers! One of the best places to see lots of animals in their wild habitat is at Manuel Antonio National Park . With the help of a guide you will see plenty of birds, monkeys, and even sloths! This particular tour is super popular and also has amazing reviews, so you really can;t go wrong.

There are also lots of wildlife rescue centers around the country that are worth visiting. The Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo is one of our favorites as well as Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center in San Jose where you can book this private tour.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Pura Vida!

As you can see, the crocodile bridge is a great spot to see some crocodiles in the wild (and at a safe distance!) while you’re visiting Costa Rica. Hopefully, our tips will help you know what to expect before you go so you can have fun once you arrive.

The opportunity to witness these jungle giants amidst the captivating backdrop of Costa Rica's rainforests and mangroves is truly an unforgettable experience.

Crocodile Habitats in Costa Rica

Crocodile habitats in Costa Rica encompass three distinct ecosystems: the river, the mangroves, and the river mouth. These diverse environments provide a range of habitats for the crocodiles to thrive in.

  • The river : This habitat is home to the American Crocodile, particularly in the Tarcoles River, where these formidable creatures coexist alongside a variety of unique and beautiful bird species.
  • The mangroves : Crocodiles find shelter and breeding grounds in the intricate network of mangroves along the coasts of Costa Rica, offering them protection and a bountiful food source.
  • The river mouth : This transitional zone between river and sea provides crocodiles with access to both freshwater and saltwater environments, creating a unique habitat for these ancient reptiles.

In Costa Rica, the Tarcoles River stands out as a prime location for observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Offering wildlife photography cruises, bird watching tours, and birding experiences, it provides an immersive opportunity to witness the diversity of wildlife, including the awe-inspiring crocodiles, in the heart of Costa Rica's biodiversity.

Crocodile Behavior and Ecology

Amidst the diverse habitats of Costa Rica, the behavior and ecology of crocodiles reveal a fascinating glimpse into the intricate dynamics of their natural environment. These apex predators are formidable in their hunting abilities, continually growing new teeth to maintain their status at the top of the food chain. Baby crocodiles exhibit unique behaviors, emitting noises from within their eggs, while adult crocodiles have been observed consuming stones to aid in food digestion. This illustrates the diverse and fascinating behaviors of these creatures within their ecosystem, showcasing their adaptability and resilience.

River systems such as the Rio Tarcoles provide a habitat for these creatures. While exploring the region, consider embarking on a Jungle Crocodile Safari to witness these fascinating animals in their natural environment. It's important to note that ethical considerations should be taken into account during wildlife tourism to ensure minimal disruption to the natural behaviors of these creatures. Costa Rica's efforts to protect endangered species further emphasize the country's dedication to wildlife conservation.

Conservation of Costa Rican Crocodiles

When considering the conservation of Costa Rican crocodiles, it's important to focus on protecting their natural habitat and mitigating human-crocodile conflicts.

By safeguarding the crocodile habitats, you can ensure the survival of these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.

Additionally, implementing measures to reduce conflicts between crocodiles and humans is crucial for the safety of both species.

Crocodile Habitat Protection

How can we ensure the protection of Costa Rican crocodile habitats to safeguard the long-term survival of these iconic reptiles and their diverse ecosystems?

To protect the habitats of Costa Rican crocodiles, consider the following:

  • Implementing Strict Regulations: Enforce regulations to prevent habitat destruction, pollution, and encroachment in critical crocodile habitats such as the Tarcoles River and the mangroves along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
  • Promoting Responsible Tourism: Advocate for responsible wildlife tourism practices, especially around areas like the Crocodile Bridge, to minimize disturbances to crocodile habitats and behavior.
  • Fostering Collaborative Conservation: Collaborate with local communities, researchers, and environmental organizations to promote crocodile habitat protection and ensure the long-term survival of these iconic reptiles.

Human-Crocodile Conflict Mitigation

Mitigating human-crocodile conflicts in Costa Rica involves protecting crocodiles in their natural habitat while minimizing interactions with humans. Conservation efforts within the National Parks focus on educating locals and tourists about coexisting with crocodiles. Safety measures are implemented at river mouths and areas frequented by crocodiles. Responsible wildlife tourism is promoted to reduce negative encounters.

Monitoring and studying crocodile behavior, population status, and habitat inform effective conservation strategies. Initiatives also establish protocols for addressing incidents and provide resources for communities to safely coexist with crocodiles.

Crocodile Watching Tours in Costa Rica

If you're interested in witnessing the incredible American Crocodiles in their natural habitat, you'll want to know about the best tour companies, the hotspots where these magnificent creatures are often spotted, and some important safety tips to keep in mind.

Tour Safety Tips

For a safe and enjoyable experience during crocodile watching tours in Costa Rica, it's essential to adhere to the instructions and guidelines provided by the tour guide. Keep in mind the following safety tips:

  • Maintain a safe distance from the crocodiles and avoid sudden movements or loud noises to prevent startling them.
  • Stay cautious near the water's edge, and refrain from leaning over the boat or getting too close to the crocodiles.

Respect the natural habitat of Costa Rica's unique wildlife, including vibrant Scarlet Macaws and white-faced capuchin monkeys, by refraining from feeding or attempting to touch the animals.

Interactions With Crocodiles in the Wild

To ensure your safety and that of the crocodiles in their natural habitat, it's crucial to avoid provoking or approaching them when in the wild. During your journey through Costa Rica's stunning landscapes, encountering these magnificent creatures can be an awe-inspiring experience. However, it's important to remember that they're wild animals and should be observed from a safe distance.

While admiring the beautiful birds and lush vegetation, be aware of your surroundings and keep a respectful distance from crocodiles. If you happen to come across one of Costa Rica's crocodiles, remain calm and move slowly. It's essential to give the animal space to move away on its own. Understanding their behavior and body language can help you anticipate their actions and prevent potential conflicts.

Always respect the natural behaviors of crocodiles and avoid any actions that could disturb or harm them. By following these guidelines, you can safely appreciate the incredible wildlife of Costa Rica while ensuring the well-being of its fascinating crocodiles.

Awesome Places to Stay In Costa Rica

I f your idea of a dream vacation is exploring ancient history, getting a tan at the beach, or stalking sloths and monkeys on hikes through the jungle, then Costa Rica is the place for you .

And to help you get the most out of your trip, I have shared some of the best places to stay in Costa Rica (check out best Costa Rica activities here) so you can pick the one that most suits your needs. Be warned, though; no matter which one you choose, there’s a chance you’ll never want to leave!

Related post: 7 Days in Costa Rica – The perfect itinerary!

The capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, is one of the best places to stay for anyone looking to experience the rich history of the Ticos. With outstanding museums and art galleries, stunning architecture, well-maintained parks, and friendly locals, you will not only be able to enjoy the Costa Rican culture but also an array of activities that will truly make your visit memorable.

There’s a lot to do in downtown San Jose – you don’t want to miss include the National Theater, Jade Museum, Central Park, Spanish Park, and Democracy Plaza. Plan a day or two to visit these – it’s a chance to not only catch up on your history lessons but also to mingle with the welcoming locals.

But don’t miss the nightlife either. Under the moonlight, the city shines bright with clubs, bars, and restaurants, offering a fantastic opportunity for anyone who loves to party.

Perhaps one of the things you’ll love about San Jose is convenience. The city is only 30 minutes from Juan Santa Maria International Airport and there is an extensive range of accommodation options in and around it to fit every budget. We love the Adventure Inn for our first or last night in-country! You can get 10% off your stay by clicking here .

And because of its central location, it makes an excellent base for day trips to waterfalls, volcanoes, and cloud forests.

Famed for its beautiful Pacific coast beaches , majestic volcanoes, and picturesque mountain ranges, Guanacaste is a true paradise for nature lovers. Tourists flock here to enjoy the long summer days, diverse wildlife, and the active culture of the locals. Some of the best beaches are in Guanacaste .

Also, this part of Costa Rica doesn’t rain much, which makes it the perfect place to participate in activities like horseback riding, ziplining, water sports, and other thrills that may require a sunny day.

You’ll get to Guanacaste from Liberia International Airport , located just outside of Liberia, the delightful capital of Guanacaste. As soon as you land, you’ll see luxury vehicles waiting to pick up arrivals and transport them off to the most luxurious hotels and all-inclusive resorts in the country.

The Gulf of Papagayo is perhaps where the majority will be headed, and it’s where you want to go too if you want to experience the finest accommodation in the region. We adore staying at the all-inclusive Planet Hollywood and discovering the hidden beaches of Nacazcolo and Cabuyal .

In the Gulf of Papagayo, you’ll find all manner of lodging options from high-end five-star and boutique hotels to family and adults-only hideaways, that cater to every budget. But don’t spend all your vacation here. There’s still a lot more to explore in other parts of Guanacaste away from the Pacific Ocean. Start with Palo Verde National Park.

Nicoya Peninsula

If you want a quiet vacation away from the real world, Nicoya Peninsula is a great place. The off-the-beaten-path escape exudes a low-key, hippie vibe that draws people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

However, because it’s too secluded, not many people come here. But perhaps that’s a good thing because you will have all those beautiful mountainous landscapes and jaw-dropping beaches all to yourself!

Watersports are huge here, thanks to the magnificent beaches in the area including Malpais, Montezuma, and Santa Teresa . You will particularly see surfers, as this is one of the best surf spots in Central America , but there is also no shortage of swimmers, scuba divers, and other watersports junkies. You’ll find plenty of yogis and wellness enthusiasts too; don’t leave without squeezing in a class of yoga!

If you would rather watch some wildlife , make arrangements for a day hike through Cabo Blanco and see all kinds of animals including sloths , white-tailed coatis, coyotes, and howler monkeys . After you’re done adventuring, there is an abundance of places to eat and sleep. You can find accommodation at hotels near the beach or in one of the charming surf towns around.

I can’t wait to discover the turtle nesting in July at Ostional- I plan to head there this summer to check it out!

Located in Cartago province, in the verdant Central Valley, Turrialba is a beautiful little town that gives its residents some picturesque views of Costa Rica’s countryside and direct access to the Turrialba volcano. From the summit, Poas, Irazu, and Barva volcanoes can also be seen in the distance when the sky is clear.

If you thrive on adrenaline-rushing adventures , staying in this town will serve you exactly that. With thundering rivers, extensive wildlife, pristine tropical forests, and lush mountainous landscapes, Turrialba is one of the best areas for nature lovers and adrenaline junkies to spend a vacation in Costa Rica.

Try river rafting along the Reventazon and Pacuare rivers; it’s one of the most popular activities in the area and will certainly give you an unforgettable vacation.

Other thrills you can venture into include canyoning, ziplining, animal spotting, and canopy tours. For history lovers, Guayabo National Monument would be an amazing place to explore.

The Pacuare Lodge is a favorite place to stay for rafters and adventure seekers. You have to get there via raft or 4×4- and the accommodations are luxe. Once you get there, make sure to try the food- it’s divine. Oh, and the birdwatching is unparalleled.

Puerto Viejo

A laid-back Caribbean vibe, idyllic beaches, thriving forests, abundant wildlife, and cheap accommodations are what welcome you to Puerto Viejo.

You will likely not find a lot of things to do here as you would in the town’s northern neighbor, Tortuguero, or in areas along the Pacific Coast, but that’s the beauty of it all. You want to relax, escape from the real world, and experience the true Caribbean atmosphere. That’s what this destination does for you.

But don’t get me wrong. Staying here doesn’t mean your vacation will be boring. Absolutely not! There are so many places to go and things to see that will truly make your stay enjoyable.

The Jaguar Rescue Center is one of them – go see sloths, howler monkeys, and other animals that call this place home.

You could also visit Finca La Isla botanical garden, go on a chocolate tour, or bike around the city and socialize with the locals. And the beach is a no-brainer; don’t leave without riding the waves !

Cahuita National Park is a neighbor to Puerto Viejo. There you’ll find an abundance of sea turtles and ample snorkeling opportunities. You can also visit Playa Manzanillo just south of Puerto Viejo- it’s one of the most picturesque beaches on Costa Rica’s Caribbean side.

Stay at the Banana Azul.  Each room has gorgeous photography of Costa Rica, it’s right next to the beach, and the pool is the perfect temperature.  One of the biggest advantages of the rooms here is that several include kitchens, so you can cook yourself to save some money .

Manuel Antonio

The coastal village of Manuel Antonio is one of the most visited places in Costa Rica and for a good reason – it has magnificent natural beauty, extensive wildlife, gorgeous beaches, and excellent cuisine.

People flock here to spot monkeys, sloths, snakes, frogs, and other wildlife in the phenomenal Manuel Antonio National Park.

You will definitely love the park too but there are other fantastic attractions you want to explore during your stay. You can do a canopy zip line tour , visit waterfalls , go whitewater rafting, or just chill at the beach. After lots of wildlife and beach activities, sit back, relax, and take in the breathtaking views of the sunset on a sunset sailing tour.

Accommodation options are in abundance. There is no shortage of resorts, hotels, hostels, and apartments in Manuel Antonio. If you are planning a luxury vacation, you will have plenty of exquisite ocean-view resorts and other 5-star lodging options to choose from. Similarly, you will find many pocket-friendly and mid-range options.

We love to stay at the Karahe Beach Resort.  It’s close to the beach and a full Costa Rican breakfast is included.  Plus, you can walk right to the entrance of Manuel Antonio National Park.

Don’t forget that Manuel Antonio is the gateway to many other places in the south- namely the sleepy ex-pat town of Dominical , and the majestic whale watching available in Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita, Costa Rica .  The Nauyaca waterfalls are close too.

Corcovado National Park

If Manuel Antonio doesn’t do it for you, Corcovado definitely will. While Costa Rica is home to so many national parks Corcovado just might be the crown jewel. It houses over 50 percent of all animal and plant species in Costa Rica.

Here, you will find not only a cloud forest, mangrove swamp, and palm forest among other flora but also jaguars, coatis, pumas, ocelots, and other feline animal species. It’s no wonder this park once held the title of being one of the most biodiverse places in the world!

While you could spend your day birdwatching, hiking through the park, or basically just exploring the wildlife, there is a plethora of other activities that could make your stay fun too including beach hopping, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, gold mining tour, or scuba diving at the Cano Island.

There’s a lodge inside the park where you can spend the night after a day of exploration. You will find a few structures here with netted bunk beds and other offerings like bathrooms and showers, internet, and electricity for your overnight stay.

We love to stay at Poor Man’s Paradise.  The food is included, and the trip through the mangroves on the boat to arrive- well, there’s nothing like it.  You’ll be able to book all kinds of tours with experienced guides here, and the sunsets are amazing.

The small town of Tortuguero is located on the Caribbean coast, and houses one of the most popular turtle nesting sites on the planet. In fact, that’s where the town and the famous Tortuguero National Park got their name.

But as much as this area is about marine turtles, there is more to see here. The surrounding canals, jungle, and mangroves offer a dwelling place for diverse other wildlife including howler monkeys, toucans, jaguars, and up to 300 species of birds.

Most people visit the town mainly to go to the national park and experience the vibrant local culture and will probably be here just for a day or two.

But for those who choose to stick around for a couple more days, there are lots of fun and unique activities to be enjoyed including going on a cocoa tour, eating from a floating restaurant, hiking up Tortuguero Volcano, and relaxing at the beach.

And of course, there are plenty of amazing places to stay – whether you’re a budget, medium, or luxury traveler.

Make sure to stay at the Mawamba Lodge.  It’s the only one that has access both to the beach and the river- making it easy to walk right out your cabin door and see the sea turtles nesting.

Don’t miss eating the Caribbean “ rice and beans ” or the Caribbean chicken at Miss Miriam’s. She cooks right in her own home, and the food is divine.  Make sure to make a reservation beforehand- her table fills up quickly!

I am totally biased about San Ramon since our family is from here, but hear me out. I love the small-town charm of San Ramon- there is a gorgeous church in the center of town surrounded by everything you could need store-wise.

You are an hour from Playa Mantas , an hour from San Jose, an hour from La Fortuna- you get the idea.  Plus, the best restaurants in the country are right in town.

We love to visit the nature areas of La Paz- especially the Trapiche .  There’s Las Musas waterpark not far from the city center, and Finca Libertad Pura gives some of the best horseback riding through the coffee fields that you will ever find. The weekly farmer’s market provides entertainment and the freshest Costa Rican fruit you can find.

Finally, San Ramon has a thriving ex-pat population, which means many of the people in town speak English.  You can get around easily on foot, or if you choose to rent a car you can explore the greater area.

We love to stay at the Airbnb Casa Las Golondrinas- the apartment is fully equipped and sleeps 4 comfortably.  The views of the ocean and the city center can’t be beaten- don’t miss the sunsets especially!

The majestic Arenal Volcano is the iconic photo everyone wants from Costa Rica.  But that’s not the only reason to visit La Fortuna .  (Again, I’m biased- it’s my favorite place in Costa Rica!)

La Fortuna retains its small-town charm while offering big excitement with some of the best activities .  From waterfall chasing to zip lining ( Eco Glide is the best for families), night tours to rafting and rappelling- you will have a ton of fun.

And let’s not forget the best part of La Fortuna- soaking in endless hot springs . Whether you love something like Kalambu Water Park for the kids, the majestic man-made springs of Baldi , or the natural beauty of Tabacon and Eco Termales, there is a hot spring for everyone.

Given the proximity to the center of agriculture in Costa Rica, you’ll find some of the best restaurants in the country right in La Fortuna.  Don’t miss eating at a small soda like La Hormiga, or try some fancy traditional Costa Rican food at Don Rufino.

We love to stay at Volcano Lodge and Springs because the food is great, there’s a playground right by the bar/restaurant, and you can get your own personal hot spring right on the patio to your room! If that’s not your style, there are lots of other accommodations in La Fortuna as well.

While it can have the connotation of a party town, we actually really love to stay in Jaco with kids.

On the north end of the beach, there’s a big estuary where kids can play in the salt water without having to worry about the big waves.  The south end of the beach brings baby waves perfect for playing with littles, or for beginner surfers wanting to go out and try their hand at surfing.

There is tons of international food to eat in Jaco , and the weekly farmer’s market is a ton of fun to walk through.  If you want to cook at home, there are great grocery stores here too. Want a cheap meal? Soda Las Olas can’t be beaten.

Don’t miss a horseback ride or a hike out to the lookout over the beach- you can find horse rentals right on the south end of the beach.

Don’t miss the secret beaches nearby. We love both Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca , and they are right next to each other. We also enjoyed the crocodile tour along the Rio Tarcoles.

Finally, we love to stay at The Palms- the apartments are pristine and the location is excellent. There are lots of hotels in Jaco too if The Palms isn’t your style.

I definitely saved the best for last. Internationally known for it’s lush jungle rainforests, pristine cloudforest, and some of the best insect and bird watching in the world, Monteverde has to be one of the most popular places to visit in Costa Rica.

Made up of two villages- Monteverde and Santa Elena, the path between the two of them are littered with great restaurants and tons of hotels. When you add the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in there- well there’s endless hiking and bird watching to be had.

The longest zip line in Costa Rica is fro Sky Adventures, and the Cafe Monteverde Tour will teach you everything you need to know about Costa Rican coffee .

We love to stay at Burbi Lake Lodge- it’s quiet and calm and just off the beaten track of the main road. If you aren’t liking Burbi then there are plenty of Monteverde hotels to choose from.
