Where do Mediterranean cruises go?

Whether you love art, history, natural wonders, fine cuisine, or all of the above, a Mediterranean cruise lets you experience something amazing at every stop. The Mediterranean region is vast, including many countries each with its own personality, cuisine, and scenery. 

Celebrity’s Mediterranean cruises sail from Athens, Barcelona, Rome, Southampton, and Ravenna (Venice). 

Feel like an old-fashioned movie star on the French Riviera, learn about military history in Malta, explore Biblical history in Israel, and delve back more than 4,000 years in time to Egypt.

How long are Mediterranean cruises?

Mediterranean cruises on Celebrity last from six to 12 nights. Spend seven nights visiting popular ports in Spain, France, and Italy, or longer voyages that include Greece and Turkey. 

When’s the best time to cruise? 

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean will vary depending on your particular interests and schedule. The main Mediterranean cruise season runs from April through November each year, with June to September the peak months. But with Celebrity you can cruise Europe year round. 

July to September is the peak summer season in the Mediterranean, when most Europeans take their summer vacation. April, May, June, later in September, and October are all great months to visit, too. You can sail the Mediterranean with Celebrity right up to November, which is a wonderful time for sightseeing with fewer people around. The best time to head to the far south of the region is from February to April, when the climate is perfect for exploring Israel and Egypt.

What should I pack?

When you’re packing for a Mediterranean cruise, swimwear and beach outfits are essential. You’ll need comfortable shoes for sightseeing, whether this involves walking over uneven cobblestone roads or clambering over the rocky paths of the Acropolis in Athens. 

A good sun hat is essential If you want to visit churches, synagogues, and cathedrals we recommend long pants or skirt and a scarf/shawl to cover your shoulders.  

If you’re traveling at the beginning or the end of the season, the weather could be cool, so bring cover-ups and a light waterproof jacket.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What can I see while I’m there?

From the history-lined canals of Venice to the sun-soaked playgrounds of the French Riviera to the iconic architecture of Spain, our array of award-winning Europe vacations offers something special for every discerning world traveler.

Get up close to historic sites like the ancient Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens, and the charming Old City of Dubrovnik. Take stellar photos at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. See Michelangelo’s remarkable Renaissance artwork on the Sistine Chapel ceiling as you tour Vatican City.

In Portugal, experience the spectacular medieval architecture in Lisbon and taste a variety of Port wines in Porto. Where are the best beaches?

The Mediterranean is fringed with  dazzlingly beautiful beaches . Here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world, wild dunes, craggy cliffs, rocky coves, and aquamarine shallows on others.

For long sweeps of sand, great watersports, and a lively scene, try Mykonos. If black or red sand intrigues you, head for Santorini. For old-fashioned glamor, visit the beaches around Italy’s Amalfi Coast or the chic beach towns along the French Riviera. 

Sardinia arguably has the most beautiful turquoise water. Ibiza is fringed with pretty coves, some sleepy, some with cool beach bars and DJs spinning tunes all afternoon. 

What is there for families to do on a Mediterranean cruise?

The Mediterranean is fantastic for families. It’s educational, it brings history to life, the shopping is great, the ice cream unsurpassed, and the beaches superb. Mediterranean cultures love kids, too, and children are welcomed everywhere. 

Families can enjoy the Colosseum in Rome, gondola rides in Venice, the old walls of Dubrovnik, and cable cars for stunning city views or off-road buggy experiences. You can also experience Pompeii, the cave houses of Matera, and for soccer fans, Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona. 

Should I book tours ahead of time?

If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions around the Mediterranean are extremely popular.

Can I get around with English?

Many languages are spoken around the Mediterranean, from Maltese to French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, and Hebrew. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak some English.

Do I need a visa?

You will need a passport to travel to the Mediterranean, but the vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries. 

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

CUISINE EVERYTHING'S BETTA WITH A LITTLE FETA

The Greek islands are known for famous foods like feta cheese, but the location is also home to a slew of other delicacies. Olive oil plays a big part in the local cuisine, as does local produce such as tomatoes and other Mediterranean vegetables. Feast on feta me meli, baked feta wrapped in filo, or choriatiki, greek salad with tons of vegetables. While meat such as lamb, pork and veal are found everywhere, especially in gyros or keftethes (meatballs), fish and seafood are the undisputed stars, due to proximity to the sea.

SAY CHEESE!

Kefalonia is home to the legendary tiropita cheese puff, which is basically cheese baked in cheese, although you'll also find puffs filled with vegetables, particularly spinach, and even sometimes meat. You can also find local cheeses like feta, manuri or kefalotiri everywhere.

EYES ON THE PIES

Meat pies filled with lamb, veal or sometimes pork are called kreatopita, and they are cooked with wine and tomatoes, garlic, cinnamon and nutmeg, creating a medley of flavors. There's also a variety called pastitsio that combines pasta and meat.

FLEX YOUR MUSSELS

Your choices are endless when it comes to fresh seafood prepared according to local tradition. Try a simple shrimp and pasta dish, or go wild with octapodi kokkinisto, octopus in tomato sauce during your Greece cruise.

Mediterranean cruise in October advice needed

We were scheduled to go on a April 2022 in the  Mediterranean but are now considering changing to 2023 in October.  Is October weather good for a Western Mediterranean cruise  from Barcelona to Rome?  First time to Europe so not  familiar with best cruise months.

October is usually good weather although you mat start finding a little rain toward November.

Shhh, don't tell anyone but we prefer October cruises in that neck of the woods.   😀    So far, knock on wood, we have only experienced good weather during our Oct Med cruises.

Weather was perfect when we cruised from Barcelona to Athens with stops in Monte Carlo, Florence, Rome, Amalfi, in Oct. 2017. Temps in high 60's, sunny.  Highly recommend that time of year for your cruise.

Almost all of my 10 Med cruises have been in October or November. I love that time of year -- not as hot, not as crowded.

As mentioned, there is a somewhat greater chance of rain (more on Western than on Eastern routes) and more in the ports that are farther north (particularly France or northern Italy). More southern ports such as Rome and Barcelona generally enjoy great weather at that time of year. 

What is the itinerary of the cruise you're considering?

October is probably the best month of the year for Italy, Greece and the Aegean -- and usually very good in the rest of the Med - great weather and fewer crowds.  Certainly beats April, which is likely to be chillier with more chance of rain.

Our last Med cruise was September a few years ago and it was too hot, October sounds great.

We have done multiple Med cruises in October…eastern and western.    

We have spent numerous Octobers in the Med  area….Greece, Sicily, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, etc.over the years.   The weather up to Oct 15/20 has always been good for us.    

Sunny, very warm at the end of October on our last trip to Cyprus.   But…..anything can happen.

We used to go to the Med for the 3rd week in October (half term holiday) before we found cruising; Northern Spain would be cooling down, especially the sea, and there might be rain; Southern Spain was good, but again the sea was getting chillier for swimming, as were the Balearic Islands; Greece still warm, Tunisia, the most southerly, was hot.

We have met with the wind coming down from France in N. Spain, and thunderstorms around Italian islands, but mainly it has been warm and mostly dry. 

Thanks for all of the feedback and info.  We were and still scheduled for a April 15 2022 Rome to Barcelona.  But we are considering the October 2023 Barcelona to Rome on the Rivera.  We would be disappointed if some of the ports were cancelled or changed, plus now with folks getting Covid even with their shots is a game changer for us now.  We were told by the TA we have 24 months  to rebook a cruise. So we are researching new cruises  for 2023 now to see what other choices we could have.  Our 60 day payment is do Feb 14, so we have to be ready to have a new cruise picked out by that date.

We have just cancelled an April cruise, Venice to Rome, and have no plans to book anything else for this year. In fact the only ones I am looking at are late 2023.

We have three cruises booked for 2022, and see no reason to cancel them. We had an excellent cruise in October/November 2021, and expect our cruises this year to be just as enjoyable.

We are hoping to get back to Greece in Sept/Oct.  DW wants a cruise.  The plan is to pick up a late booking cruise in October while we are there.  Either from Rome, Athens, or Istanbul. Whatever is on offer as long as the ship, the cruise line, and the price are right.

Same her almost all of our cruises have been in Oct, great time of year less people and great weather. Did one in Aug. Rome was so hot it was like Orlando Fl. in the summer. 

Our last Med cruise was at the very end of Oct,  Disembarked in early Nov.  

Weather was fine but....we had rain following us for three days.  Never a drop on us BUT had our cruise left Rome a day or two earlier it would not have been pleasant.   

We also experienced some slight rain and rough seas when we were on the Aeolian (off the coast of Sicily) in late October.   We had to cancel a few private tours to some islands because of the seas.

We would select the first part of October for a cruise if given the choice.  Depending on the island and on the weather you will find that some businesses on the Greek Islands start shutting down mid October.

When we went on our October cruise we already had another booked with the same company, and intended booking another whilst on board. Because of the overall experience on that cruise, we did not go for another booking whilst on board, and because of further information which has since come to light, we cancelled the booked cruise. Such is life 🤬

You obviously didn't cruise with a quality cruise line. Ours was extremely conscientious,  so you were unlucky.

Silversea 😒 … and monitoring the SS forum on CC a lot of other people have been ‘unlucky’ as well. Corporate have got it badly wrong. 🙂

It's now fully owned by RCCL, so probably not surprising standards will start to slip.

Sounds like RCCL are as proficient at ruining quality cruise lines, as Carnival.

we are glad to see that October is still a good month to cruise the western Med. We have to decide now between Apri/may and October either in 2023  or 2024.  Wanted to avoid the summer.  I don't think we can wait until 2024 as we looking forward to this year.
