Complete Guide to Cruising From the Port of Seattle

When it comes to departure ports, it’s tough to beat a destination like Seattle. As a world-class city tucked into one of the most beautiful regions on the planet, there’s a ton to see and do in the area. And that’s before you even set foot on a cruise ship.

If you’re sailing from Seattle, then you are almost assuredly headed to Alaska. The port serves as a jumping off point for Alaskan cruises, most of them lasting a week. Over the past decade or so Alaskan cruises have boomed in popularity, and with that so has traffic at the Port of Seattle.

Today the two terminals (with a third on the way) serve more than 1.2 million passengers in a typical year — most of that during the busy summer Alaskan cruise season.

Unlike ports in Florida that might attract a lot of locals, most passengers sailing from Seattle are from out of town and unfamiliar with the port and what it offers. For those, we’ve created this complete guide to cruising from the Port of Seattle.

Port of Seattle Location

As mentioned above, Seattle has two different terminals. Unlike other cruise ports, the terminals aren’t located at one single spot. Instead, they are separated by a few miles.

That said, both terminals are located near downtown in the heart of Seattle. Pier 66 (Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal) is within walking distance of downtown and the famous Pike Place Market. Pier 91 (Smith Cove Terminal) is just about three miles up the waterfront.

Both terminals are about 15 miles from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The ride will take about 20-30 minutes to get to the ship from the airport.

If you are driving to the port, here is the address to use for both Pier 66 and Pier 91:

Many people come into Seattle before their cruise to explore the area for a day or two. There’s a chance you might be coming from somewhere other than the airport. In that case, here are the distances from a number of areas around town:

• Sea-Tac Airport: 15 miles | 20-30 minutes
• Tacoma: 35 miles | 45-60 minutes
• Olympia: 60 miles | 1 hour 15 minutes
• West Seattle: 6 miles | 15 minutes
• Capitol Hill: 3 miles | 10 minutes
• Bellevue: 11 miles | 20-25 minutes
• Kent: 22 miles | 35 minutes

Things to Do Near the Port

One of the big benefits of cruising from Seattle is that there is a ton to do right nearby. Within minutes you have a number of world-class attractions. For that reason, we suggest thinking of Seattle as your first port of call and spend at least a day exploring, instead of just arriving and getting on the ship.

Space Needle Complex Of course, the most famous landmark in Seattle is the Space Needle. It’s only a short distance from the cruise ports. In addition to seeing the building, there’s also lots more to do at the complex, including the Pacific Science Center, Seattle Children’s Museum, and the Museum of Pop Culture.

Pike Place Market Pike Place Market is a tourist hotspot. The open-air market features all sorts of specialty shopping and it one of the most visited spots in the city. It’s a short 10-minute walk from Pier 66, but you’ll need a ride from Pier 91. There are also a number of hotels nearby if you want to stay in downtown Seattle.

Seattle Waterfront The waterfront right near Pier 66 and downtown Seattle is walkable with a large number of things to do. There is the Seattle Aquarium, Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, the Great Wheel and more. It’s all a short walk from Pier 66 and an easy way to spend a day. That’s not even mentioning the great views of the water afforded from these spots.

Cruise Terminals

As mentioned, the Port of Seattle has two cruise terminals, Pier 66 and Pier 91.

Pier 66 Officially known as the Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal at Pier 66, this cruise terminal is the “downtown” terminal. It’s located within walking distance of a number of hotels and attractions. It serves primarily Norwegian and Oceania cruise ships. Parking is onsite, with about 1,700 spaces. (More details on parking below.)

Pier 91 While Pier 66 is the most “visible” cruise pier due to its location, more people sail from Pier 91. That’s because it’s served by a much greater number of cruise lines, including Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, and Princess. The location is north of downtown, but a short distance away. There is also parking right nearby if you are driving in for a cruise.

Hotels Near the Seattle Port

If you’re flying in for your cruise, it’s always a good idea to plan to arrive a day early. This way if anything goes awry with your flights — equipment delays, weather, computer issues, etc. — then you still have plenty of time to get to the port on cruise day.

But when flying into Seattle, we’d suggest everyone arrive an extra day or two, simply because there is a lot to see and do in the area, which is one of the most beautiful regions in the United States.

Because Seattle sees a large number of tourists and because the cruise ports are located near downtown, there are a number of hotels in the area. One thing to note is that downtown hotels can be more expensive than staying outside of the city center. If you are trying to save a few bucks, you can stay near the airport, which often has cheaper rates.

Getting to the Port of Seattle (Transportation)

In a city the size of Seattle, you have a number of options for getting around. Meanwhile, as the cruise industry grows, so too do the services available catering to getting cruise passengers back and forth from the port.

We have full details of all your transportation options to the port (including cruise shuttles and public transportation) here . Most people, however, use one of the following options…

Driving to the Port If you’re lucky enough to live in the area, you can simply drive to the cruise port. And while traffic in the area can be trying, it’s hard to beat the convenience of driving in for your cruise. No matter which terminal you sail from there is parking available at the port. And while it is a bit pricey, it’s also extremely convenient. You can arrive on your own schedule and also leave right when you get off the ship the day your cruise returns. We have more details on parking below.

Uber/Lyft Over the past five years or so, Uber and Lyft have transformed how people get around. The rideshare companies operate throughout the area and can get you to the cruise ports from anywhere you are. Rides will run about $50-70 and take about half an hour from the airport to the ships. Of course, not everyone is coming from the airport. That’s why we’ve estimated rates from various spots in the area below. (Note: Rates will vary based on supply/demand.)

• Sea-Tac Airport: $50-70
• Tacoma: $110-130
• Downtown: $15-25
• West Seattle: $30-40
• Capitol Hill: $15-30
• Bellevue $40-50

Taxis Of course, if rideshare isn’t for you then you can always take a taxi. Cabs are available around town and at the airport. Seattle offers both flat rate and metered cabs. Expect the general prices to be a bit higher than a comparable ride with Uber/Lyft. Still, for those that don’t have an account with a rideshare company, getting a cab can be more convenient than having to download an app and start an account when you want a ride.

Hotels with Cruise Shuttles One of the nice things about having a booming cruise industry in the city is that hotels pull out the stops to cater to cruise passengers. As is the case in other ports, a number of hotels offer shuttle rides to the port as a perk for your stay. Parking at the Port

Driving to the port? If so, then you’ve got to find somewhere to park your car during your trip. The good news is that there are convenient parking options right near the port. The bad news is that they can be expensive. Below we have your main options for parking at the Port of Seattle. For full details, see our Seattle cruise parking page here .

Official Port Parking Like all cruise ports, the Port of Seattle offers parking right at the terminal. Both Pier 66 and Pier 91 have parking lots available to passengers with more than a thousand spaces each. Passengers can park in the Bell Street Pier Garage, which is across the street from Pier 66, or there is a parking lot right across from Pier 91 just a little farther north.

The parking at the Bell Street Garage is $30 per day. Parking at Pier 91 is $29 per day. There is also RV and oversized vehicle parking available at Pier 91. While you don’t have to reserve ahead of time, reservations are available so that you can have one less thing to worry about on cruise day.

Independent Lots While many cruise ports have a number of independent lots that offer dramatically cheaper rates than parking at the port, Seattle is a bit different. Given the location, parking is at a premium so there aren’t a lot of spots. One lot that we do know of is Seattle CruisePark. It’s located near Pier 91, but offers a shuttle to both terminals. Hotels With Cruise Parking As we’ve mentioned, hotels in the Seattle area often cater to cruise passengers. Specifically, there are a number of hotels both downtown and near the airport that will let you park your car there while you cruise. For most hotels the parking is included in a package. What Time Should I Book My Flight Home? When you arrive back in Seattle after your cruise, you can expect to get back early in the morning. Most ships dock about 6-7 a.m. and then it can take 2-3 hours for everyone to get off the ship. Those choosing “self debarkation” will get off the ship first. These are people who elect to carry all of their bags with them and don’t need assistance getting off the ship.

After going through customs and immigration, it’s another 20-30 minute ride to the airport after getting to your transportation. For that reason, we’d suggest never booking a flight before noon. Yes, its possible to breeze through and get to the airport earlier, but that can also cause a lot of stress.

What About Seattle’s Port Valet Service? You might have heard about the Port Valet service from the Port of Seattle. This service is great for those headed to the airport, but who don’t want to deal with lugging bags around. You simply put a tag on your bags the night before your cruise ends and set them outside your room.  

The staff then picks them up and they are sent to the airport and loaded on the plane. That way you can explore the city for the day or simply head to the airport without worrying about your luggage.

In addition, the ship’s crew can also provide your boarding passes for your flight. So when you arrive at the airport, you can just head directly to the gate. You’re already checked-in and your luggage is taken care of.

How Do I Know Which Pier I Sail From? The Port of Seattle has two piers — Pier 66 and Pier 91. They are located about three miles from each other. So which do you head to on sail day? First, your cruise line will let you know where to arrive, but the rule of thumb is that if you are sailing on Norwegian or Oceania, then you’ll head to Pier 66.

If you’re sailing anyone else like Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity, Carnival, and others, then head to Pier 91.

Travel | more potential jurors dismissed as trump’s hush money trial enters second day, travel | alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season.

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

The most-visited Alaskan port, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Denali-sized jump of 30 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust, with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which docked in rustic Skagway last week. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line  has nearly 100 more after that.

Two competing companies have staked out even larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush. Holland America Line is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises. And at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises , which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pit stop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparalleled wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau. “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city.”

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port will have 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said.

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises ’ popular Edge class will make its Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver, and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises  ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which incorporates an unprecedented 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The nearly four-weeklong itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn  strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Disney Cruise Line  is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.

Cruise season 2024 opens in Seattle

Saturday kicks off the long-awaited summer cruise season in Seattle.

“We’re going to Alaska!” shouted one passenger.

Passengers were eager to be on their way. For some, it was the trip of a lifetime.

“We’re really excited—beyond excited,” says Tina. She and her husband have been planning their first cruise for more than a year.

Even those without a ticket say they’re excited, too.

“Right now it’s especially important as we work to get more feet on the street in Seattle,” says Howard Wright with Seattle Hospitality Group. He says cruises bring thousands of people and pocketbooks to the region.

“Restaurants, stores, the vendors- they will all see upticks in their business, in their customer counts, effective today through the end of October,” says Wright.

Local business owner Dave Riddile, agrees. “Not only do we have the benefit of more tourists down here, we also have the benefit of workers who work at the port there come in and get lunch. We have a few of them that are regulars from last season that we haven’t seen all winter. So they’ll be back soon and we’re excited for that too.” He is the co-owner of ‘Here Today Brewery and Kitchen.’

But not everyone was on board with today’s kickoff.

“The labor exploitation is appalling. The damage to the climate is massive. The dumping of the 4 billion gallons of water pollution each year is massive,” says activist Stacy Oaks.

The group ‘Seattle Cruise Control’ organized a protest outside Pier 66, demanding that the port re-evaluate the toll a thriving cruise season takes on the Puget Sound.

Meanwhile, the Port of Seattle expects 800,000 passengers to take advantage of the 2024 season. It will be their longest cruise season on record, starting earlier and ending later than ever before. The Port of Seattle projects an economic impact of nearly $900 million to the region.

1 dead after shuttle bus crashes at a Honolulu cruise ship terminal

HONOLULU (AP) — One person died and multiple people were injured when a shuttle bus collided with pedestrians and concrete barriers at a Honolulu cruise ship terminal, authorities said Friday.

The crash occurred when the shuttle bus driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake, Honolulu police said in statement.

The driver had dropped off customers at Pier 2 when bystanders noticed the bus was moving forward, police said. The driver jumped in the driver’s seat and attempted to stop the vehicle when he stepped on the gas, police said.

One pedestrian, a 68-year-old woman, died. Paramedics took four others in their 50s and 60s to the hospital in serious condition. They also took a man in his 70s to the hospital in stable condition.

Paramedics evaluated and bandaged six others who declined transportation to the hospital, said Honolulu Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Shayne Enright.

Police said speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved, police said.

Cruise ship dancer allegedly possessed and distributed child pornography, feds say

A cruise ship dancer was arrested on child pornography charges.

Law enforcement accused Jamaal Wade of possessing and sharing child sexual abuse material from at least mid-August through late January, according to a criminal complaint signed by FBI Special Agent Matthew Deragon.

Wade, at one point, sent eight videos of children as young as 2 engaging in sexual acts with adults to another user on Telegram, claiming to have “‘way more,’” according to the document filed on April 8.

The user described Wade as a professional dancer living in Washington Heights, New York, in an interview with the FBI. The person said they had exchanged child sexual abuse material with Wade and watched it together in Wade’s home.

An FBI covert employee used the person’s account to communicate with another Telegram user, also believed to be Wade, who sent them a sexually explicit video involving a male minor. Wade allegedly said the boy was 11 or 12 and said he had “‘a ton of videos,’” the complaint said. He later sent eight other videos to the covert employee.

Wade had worked as a dancer on cruise ships and was employed on one at the time of the investigation. The document does not specify which ship he was working on. He allegedly told the covert employee that he “brought his ‘collection’ of CSAM materials on board the ship,” the complaint said.

He is charged with one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. Case proceedings were moved from the Southern District of Florida to the Southern District of New York.

Robert Berube, an attorney who represented Wade in Florida, said in an email that he “will either retain counsel or have an attorney appointed to represent him” in New York. Another attorney for Wade was not yet listed.

Sexual assault on cruises: Alleged assaults rose last year, according to federal data

Law enforcement also reviewed records showing that Wade had been arrested for molesting an 11-year-old boy in Detroit, Michigan, in 2020, according to the complaint.

The news comes after two Disney Cruise Line crew members were arrested on child pornography charges in January. Federal authorities also said in December that a Celebrity Cruises crew member admitted to molesting children at an onboard youth center.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday. 

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
