One of the best things about Cagayan De Oro City is its close proximity to some of the premier island destinations not only in Mindanao but in the whole country. One of those heavenly destinations is the Island of Camiguin.

If you’re looking for a place that offers peace and tranquility while still being able to surprise you with its undeniable beauty, then Camiguin Island really is what you’d want. Hailed as “The Island Born of Fire” because of all the volcanic eruptions of Mount Hibok-Hibok that ultimately shaped its present appearance, the island is also blessed with countless features that make it a tropical paradise.

With white sand beaches, sand bars, crystalline turquoise waters, and several breathtaking views, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d wanna keep on coming back over and over again here at Camiguin Island.

15. Side Trip to Bukidnon

Finally, our last destination is the beautiful province of Bukidnon also known as the “Food Basket of Mindanao”. It only takes a little more than two (2) hours for us to reach Bukidnon from Cagayan De Oro.

Well, to maximize our trip to Cagayan De Oro and the whole island of Mindanao, the best place to go is definitely Bukidnon. Here, you’ll never run out of options for souvenirs to take home thanks to its rich agriculture and economy.

Of course, I’d recommend that you take home fresh pineapples when you visit the famous Del Monte Pineapple Plantation itself that covers an enormous area of 25,000 hectares. That’s absolutely stunning!

The jump-off point to the rafting activity is easily accessible from the airport or city proper. It takes at least 2-3 hours for each course to finish, so you should allot a half-day for this activity. Morning and afternoon schedules are available.

Mambuaya Cave (formerly known as Monigue Crystal Cave ) is a cave found at Barangay Mambua, known for its unique passageways and interesting sights.

The entrance to the cave is a small opening from which you have to crawl and submerge yourself in water, which is flowing from an underground stream. Inside, you can find various stalactites and stalagmites, calcites, transparent crystals, speleothems, and even a water terraces.

Mambuaya Cave is one of the most underrated tourist spots in Cagayan de Oro, but tourists who’ve been here can attest that it’s one of the most beautiful caves in the province.

Located a few hours away from Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin is a popular day tour destination. In a day, you can visit the most popular tourist attractions in Camiguin , including White Island, Ardent Hot Spring, Tuasan Falls, Katibawasan Falls, Sunken Cemetery, Mantigue Island , and Giant Clam Sanctuary .

Try out the Asia’s Longest Dual Zipline , a 840-meter zipline where you’ll pass through the breath-taking forested area of the park for almost a minute. If that’s easy enough for you, step up the game with the Dropzone where you’ll experience a 120-feet freefall ride into a man-made lake.

We tried the dual zipline and it was an exhilarating experience. The glide started out scary at first but just soon after I got to appreciate the view of the forest from above. One of my acquaintances tried the Dropzone and we screamed when she was dropped, but she said that it was super fun as well.

Other activities here include the Skytower Base Jump, Canopy Glider, Python Roller Zipglide, and Ropes Course.

If you’ve dreamt of flying, now is the time to make that come true!

Cagayan de Oro is one of the handful locations in Mindanao where you can paraglide. You can experience paragliding in Hugo Sky Lounge in Sierra del Oro Resort, located in Barangay Indahag. The activity entails tandem paragliding with an instructor who assists and controls the drive. You’ll get to enjoy a bird eye’s view of Cagayan de Oro and Macalajar Bay.

Take note that paragliding is a weather-dependent activity, so make sure to coordinate with your tour operator in advance.

Kweba de Oro (meaning “Cave of Gold”) is a river cave located in Barangay Lumbia, near Cagayan de Oro City. It is ideal for experienced cavers, as the route here is rather difficult. To get inside, you need to rappel about 130 feet below. You also need to cross passageways with water almost touching the ceiling, leaving only little space to breathe. To exit the cave, you need to do a short dive through a sump (underwater passage) until you emerge outside.

Few people venture to Kweba de Oro, but it is a rewarding experience and one of the most unique Cagayan de Oro tourist spots that you can visit.

Macahambus Adventure Park is a nature park geared towards the sporty and adventurous. Located at Barangay Lumbia, it is home to the Macahambus Cave and Gorge and offers various activities such as trekking thru an ancient forest filled with century-old trees, swinging from the top of a gorge, crossing an over 200-feet-high sky bridge that offers a grand view of the gorge and cave, rappelling, and ziplining.

This park in Cagayan de Oro is sure to give you experiences that you won’t soon forget!

Cagayan de Oro enjoys a continuous arrival of fresh fruits from nearby farms. The prices here are cheaper compared to Manila. You can buy lansones , mangosteen , durian , and marang .

In my last trip to Cagayan de Oro, I finally get to taste marang! It was unexpectedly delicious and the smell isn’t as strong as a durian. Take note though that a lot of hotels and establishments don’t allow durian or marang inside their premises because the fruit smell tends to linger.

Sikwate (tablea hot chocolate) and puto maya (sticky rice) is often eaten as breakfast or merienda. You can find it in Cogon Public Market , the largest local market in Cagayan de Oro. Cogon Public Market is a one-stop shop for locals. Aside from native delicacies, you can also find halal and non-halal meals here.

There are several favorite pasalubongs you can buy in Cagayan de Oro. Some of these include pastel , sinuglaw , jamon de cagayan , and roasted cashew nuts . You can buy these items in pasalubong centers or malls such as Limketkai Center.

Cagayan de Oro: The City of Golden Friendship

Cagayan de oro (abbreviated c.d.o.) is one of the most important cities in mindanao. it is the capital of the province of misamis oriental, philippines, and the regional center for northern mindanao (region x). the city has many names. it is called the gateway to northern mindanao, the city of white water rafting and river trekking. but most of all, it is through its warm and hospitable people that the city got its name as "the city of golden friendship.".

Cagayan de Oro (abbreviated C.D.O.) is one of the most important cities in Mindanao. It is the capital of the province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines, and the regional center for Northern Mindanao (Region X). According to the 2000 census, it has an estimated population of 461,877 people in 200,000 households.

The city has many names. It is called the Gateway to Northern Mindanao, the City of White Water Rafting and River Trekking. But most of all, it is through its warm and hospitable people that the city got its name as "The City of Golden Friendship."

Cagayan de Oro is base to multinational companies such as Del Monte Philippines (formerly Philippine Packing Corporation). It has been operating in Cagayan de Oro since the 1930s. Pineapples in nearby Bukidnon Province are transported to their processing plant in Barangay Bugo and shipped to the entire Philippines, Asia and the Pacific.

The Cagayan de Oro City is the center of education in Northern Mindanao. The city is the site of large state-run educational institutions and universities.

It is located at 8Â°29′N 124Â°39′E, in Mindanao. It is bordered by the province of Bukidnon to the east and south and by the municipality of Manticao, Misamis Oriental to the west. On the north lies Macajalar Bay in the Bohol Sea. The Cagayan River divides the city in the middle. The river is crossed by four bridges in the city. The city is surrounded by municipalities. The city is located in the province of Misamis Oriental and Region X. The city is outside the typhoon belt, but it is affected by the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone. The city is bordered by Opol, Tagoloan, and Bukidnon.

Whitewater rafting has been one of the tourism activities being promoted in the Cagayan de Oro River. The city government and the Department of Tourism have declared it as the banner tourism activity in Cagayan de Oro. This rafting craze just attracts tourists and extremists; paving Cagayan de Oro its way as a chief component to add up to the growing tourism in the Philippines.

Tourist Attractions

Gaston Park - named after the first Mayor of Cagayan de Oro, Segundo Gaston; located near the Saint Augustine Cathedral and Archbishop’s Palace, this park was the center of town when Pueblo de Cagayan was first erected in 1624. This plaza served as the training ground for the local revolutionaries who were preparing for the Phil-American War in 1900.

Museo de Oro and Xavier University - Located on Corrales Avenue; exhibits a repertoire of Bukidnon and Maranao cultures that have survived the ravages of time.

Golden Friendship Park - Stretches along the city’s commercial district featuring the monuments of national heroes like Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio and Ramon Magsaysay. Underneath the Bonifacio monument are the bones of patriots who perished in the Battle of Agusan against the Americans on May 14, 1900. The City Bandstand serves as a venue for community affairs.

Catanico Falls - located about 10 kilometers away from the city, the falls drop into a swimming pool where bathers could dive from where the water descends; concealed by huge boulders and covered with ferns and moss.

Seminary Hill - Located in the southeastern portion of the city is the San Jose Seminary, the training center for aspiring priests; also the site of the Carmelite Nunnery housing the Miraculous Infant Jesus.

Pelaez Sports Center - along A. Velez St., offers sports facilities, including an Olympic-sized swimming pool; site of the first Palarong Pambansa outside Metro Manila in 1975.

Malasag Nature Trail “Panoramic Scenery ” - 10 minutes drive from Cagayan de Oro to Malasag Reforestration Area. One has to negotiate the existing asphalt road of about 3 kilometers from the highway up to the 300 year Balete Tree landmark near the Mahoganao Reservoir. Along this route, one can already have a panoramic view of the Betania Retreat House; the sitio of Malasag and the City of Cagayan de Oro. This trip can be accomplished in one day.

Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village - situated in Sitio Malasag, Cugman; a rolling terrain in the slopes of reforestation area 20 minutes from the city center. A cultural village in a botanical garden setting, it showcases the tribal practices & crafts of the Mindanao tribes. The village also serves as the learning center for ecotourism, ethnic arts, flora and fauna endemic to Northern Mindanao while at the same time generating revenue and livelihood for the tribal groups. The village has a souvenir shop of ethnic products; ; tribal houses of the Talaandigs, Higao-non, Subanon, Maranaos and Ifugaos. It also features rows of cozy guest cottages; campground, swimming pool , picnic shed, orchidarium, mini garden, restaurant, butterfly garden, multi purpose hall. It offers the view of Macabalan Bay and hills of Malasag.

Bulua Stoneware - located at Barangay Bulua; handcrafted home and office decors, household wares and giftables are available for local sale and export.

Palalan Waterfalls - situated some 7.0 kilometers from Sitio Palalan, a barangay of Tablon. It is surrounded by boulders and stones dubbed by the city as Oro stone similar in characteristics with the Mangima Stone. It has 3 steps of falls at approximately 50 meters apart with the upper portion, the source, as the biggest of the three.

Migtugsok Falls - Migtugsok, a sitio of Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City is a place that could be reached via Barangay Indahag. It is accessible by car via Indahag to Kamakawan where one has to walk for 45 minutes along a winding, descending sloping trek of an estimated distance of 400 feet, passing along the converging shallow river of Bigaan and Migtugsok. The river convergence is more or less 20 meters in width. Another 30-minute trek is made before reaching the falls using the river. The falls is composed of five beautiful cascading waters, where the beauty of nature could still be experienced, unexploited by the carelessness of human search for progress and development.

Monigue Cave - located in Barangay Mambuaya, the cave entrance has flowing water from an underground stream. The cave has a small opening that looks too narrow to be passable: it has a six inches airspace between ceiling and water that one has to submerge one by one at a time, equipped with a helmet and a waterproof cap lamp. The cave contains beautiful sparkling formations which are called the calcium carbonate, or calcites. These stalactites and stalagmites, white and brown, are signs of oxidized materials that take 50-60 years to form an inch. The cave is definitely spellbinding. There are formations of flowstones, gurpool-resembling rice terraces, transparent crystals and picturesque speleothems, such as cathedral drapes and icons. Everything is simply beautiful and awesome.

Macahambus Hill Cave and Gorge - was the site of the famous Battle of Macahambus Hill which took place on June 4, 1900, the first Filipino victory against the Americans. The cave itself is a picturesque spot. Today, its short cavern leads to a veranda that overlooks the meandering Cagayan River below. 200 meters away is the Macahambus Gorge. This was actually the steep precipice where the enemy forces fell to their deaths. Today, a flight of over a hundred steps leads one down to the floor of the gorge where there is an underground river that comes out from one cave to another cave . The cave is covered with lush tropical forest growth.

Huluga Cave - On the south end of the city, about eight kilometers south, is Huluga Cave. Composed of two main caverns, it is situated on the eastern side of Cagayan River, along the brow of a vertical limestone cliff. The Skeletal fragments from these caves were found to belong to a child and a woman who inhabited Cagayan 1,600 years B.C. This was based on the acid racemization done by Scripps Institute in La Jolla, California.

Motorellas are slow but you don't have to wait long for them to fill with passengers. They travel set routes, but will give you custom service for a negotiated price. Jeepneys are perfectly safe during the day and cost only a tenth of a taxi ride. If it doesn't take you where you meant to go, then you can take one to a large hub, where you can continue with another one. Try to find a full one, since an empty one will wait for more passengers.

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines – An art exhibit of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in Cagayan de Oro presented okir as the essence and embodiment of the Meranaw culture and identity.

Okir is a pattern or design characterized by intricate geometric and flowing designs often seen in various Meranaw art forms such as architecture, woodcarving, weaving, brass work. It is also commonly used to design mosques, houses, furniture, and traditional Meranaw clothing.

It influenced other Meranaw artforms greatly due to its association with rank and prestige, becoming used in textiles, musical instruments, betel quid containers, sculptures, weaponry, silver inlays, and so on. These designs became the standard for what came to be known as okir.

From the Meranaw, this spread to nearby regions through the migrations of the Iranaon people, the descendants of the Meranaw merchant and outcast clans.

Elements of okir have been adopted by the neighboring Maguindanao, Lumad, Yakan, and Tausug peoples of the Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago; even influencing the carving traditions of the Sama later on. Okir , among the Tausug, is usually limited to the hilts and scabbards of weapons.

The exhibit, held from April 16 to 18 at the Event Hall of SM Cagayan de Oro Downtown, featured three themes: Okir a Bai showcasing langkit creations by Saadira Shiek Basmala, Okir a Datu with woodworks by Lantong Pangcoga, and “The Future: Okir and Visual Arts” displaying paintings and calligraphy by Architect Edris Tamano.

Bangsamoro Commission for Cultural Preservation and Heritage-Lanao del Sur (BCPCH) Commissioner Robert Alonto said BARMM is nominating Tamano for the Orden ng mga Pambansang Alagad ng Sining (Order of National Artists) and Basmala and Pangcoga for the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Treasures Award (Gamaba).

The Order of National Artists is the highest national recognition given to Filipinos who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts in music, dance, theater, visual arts, literature, film, broadcast arts, and architecture and allied arts. It is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and conferred by the President upon recommendation by both institutions.

Similarly, the Gamaba, institutionalized through Republic Act No. 7355, is also administered and implemented by the NCCA. An executive council conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program that will ensure the transfer of their skills to others, and undertakes measures to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill pride among people about the genius of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.

Manlilikha ng Bayan refers to a citizen engaged in any traditional art uniquely Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached such a high level of technical and artistic excellence and have been passed on to and widely practiced by the present generation in his/her community with the same degree of technical and artistic competence.

Carving tradition

The okir-carving tradition among the Meranaw is prominent in the town of Tugaya, Lanao del Sur . It is the traditional center of Maranao artisans and is the industrial capital of Lanao del Sur.

The Cagayan de Oro exhibit also featured okir-inspired fashion accessories, clothing, and souvenirs from Aretes Style and LN Collectible Handicraft Producers Cooperative.

“Okir Art Exhibit falls under component 3 Meranaw Creatives and Urban Forms,” said Ruholla Husseini Javier Alonto, project manager of Tales of Marawi, a program under Task Force Bangon Marawi, and a part of the recovery efforts for Marawi City.

“This is our first major event since we started in November 2023,” Alonto noted. “We are pushing for the economic rehabilitation and revitalization of Marawi City, but also to change the image of Marawi as a conflict affected area, and resuscitate Meranaw Culture and Arts.”

Darangen epic

The exhibit’s second day was highlighted by a lecture on Okir Art by Tamano, followed by excerpts from the Darangen epic performed through a much applauded bayok or traditional poetry reading by Datu Lawan sa Ranaw, a Darangen Master from Ditsaan Ramain, Lanao del Sur.

“Okir elevates the Meranaw people’s culture and traditions because of its meaning and philosophical implications,” Tamano explained. “For example, if one is eloquent in his speech, they regard him as one who makes his speech inokir-okir, or in the likeness of okir. It speaks of the Iranaon’s approach on life, or the Iranaon philosophy.”

The term Iranaon encompasses both the Meranaw of Lanao and the Iranun of Maguindanao, whose ancestors hailed from Ranao. Originally, this group comprised various provinces including Zamboanga, Cotabato, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, and Bukidnon. In the Austronesian language, they are collectively referred to as Iranaon from Ranao.

On the third and final day of the exhibit, visitors were treated to a performance of Arkat a Lawanen , a narrative derived from the chapter Su kiyapherawaa ki Arkat a Lawanen or Kapmabaning of the Meranaw Darangen epic. Artistic Director Pepito Sumayan orchestrated the production, featuring traditional dance, music, and storytelling by the acclaimed Mindanao State University’s Sining Kambayoka Ensemble.

Alongside socio-economic development, BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Balawag “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim’s 12-point priority agenda for 2023-2025 highlights the preservation of Bangsamoro culture, heritage, and diversity.

Alonto said BARMM will remain steadfast in exploring ways to promote the region’s creative industry “handed down as a legacy to us by our Bangsamoro forefathers.”

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Tourism (DOT) is pushing all the buttons to bring international and local tourists to visit Mindanao, as the peace and security situation in the region has tremendously improved compared to a decade ago.

“The truth is, Mindanao is peaceful and the island is ready for domestic and international tourists,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said during the opening of the second Mindanao Tourism Expo (MTEx) here on Friday.

The expo, which ran from April 26 to April 28, sought to promote the tourism destinations of Mindanao’s six regions. It featured tourism spots, “pasalubong” (gift) products and discounted tour packages. Promotional displays from regions outside of Mindanao were also showcased in the expo.

Frasco said that given its vast potential, tourism could lift Mindanao’s economy to greater heights, which was why the DOT, Department of National Defense, and Department of the Interior and Local Government had signed a joint agreement on Mindanao tourism development, with peace and order as the foundation.

Outdated advisories

Frasco explained that the national government has been doing all it can to work with local governments to change the perception of tourists that Mindanao is a dangerous place to visit, as the country’s soldiers and police have done their best to keep the region safe for its residents and for tourists.

Tourist arrivals in Mindanao, especially foreigners, are tempered by travel advisories issued by their respective governments. To address this, the DOT has had various engagements with foreign dignitaries, showcasing tourism destinations across the island to show that it is peaceful and ready to cater to tourists, said Frasco.

“We have invited dignitaries, members of the embassies that have existing travel advisories against the Philippines and Mindanao so that they can see for themselves that their advisories are outdated and that it is time to lift and revise those,” Frasco emphasized.

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy also assured foreign tourists that Mindanao’s local governments are doing their share of maintaining peace and order “because we wanted you to feel safe as you enjoy our destinations.”

Data from the DOT showed that in 2022, at least 7.1 million tourists visited Mindanao. A key destination region is Northern Mindanao, or Region 10 (comprising the provinces of Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon, and the highly urbanized cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan), which hosted around 3 million tourists annually just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March 2020.

Tourist arrivals in Northern Mindanao dropped to only 650,000 in 2020 due to lockdowns and other health-related travel restrictions. However, in 2023, the arrivals in the region picked up to 2.5 million, said Juan Carlos Valentino Baclig, marketing and promotion head of DOT-10.

According to Baclig, the expo hoped to replicate the success of the first MTEx, which brought more tourists to Mindanao.

“Hopefully, by the third and fourth quarters of this year, we can see an increase in tourist arrivals after the expo. Just like the first expo in Davao, our tourist arrival increased from 1.6 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2023,” he said.

“Whether you seek adventure or cultural explorations, Mindanao has so much to offer,” said Misamis Oriental Gov. Peter Unabia.

Matanao gears up for caving tourism with better road access

MATANAO, Davao del Sur (PIA) -- All roads leading to the caves in Matanao, in the province of Davao del Sur, are well-paved and cemented.

This was the guarantee made by Matanao Information and Tourism Officer Clover Jane Chua-Sabornido in an interview by the PIA XI press conference

She said the caves in Barangays Colonsabak and Asbang are the main attractions of Matanao town that entice more domestic tourists.

“We now have night tourists, but they are mainly domestic tourists who prefer to see the sun in the first hour of the morning,” Sabornido said.

She said the people pay homage to nature by way of celebrating the “Lungib Festival,” a feast of Matanao’s natural resources like the caves, waterfalls, mountain views, and the local culture.

Sabornido said that the original name of the feast was Cave Festival two years ago. Then they rebranded it as “Lungib,” which means caves, celebrated by 33 other barangays in Matanao and supported by the Sangguniang Kabataan, local leaders, and stakeholders.

“The festivities started with street dancing by high school students of the Department of Education and Cave Forum in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), where the discussion revolved around how to preserve the cave resources, the Cave Act and the Wildlife Act, basic caving and the do’s and don'ts, and the spelunking and caving on the third day,” she said.

Sabornido said that aside from the caves, they also take pride in their mountain views and waterfalls, the view of Mt. Apo and all that can be seen from the peak of Barangay Asbang, the Divine Mercy Prayer mountain, farm tourism, the extreme sports complex, a brainchild of Mayor Vince Fernandez of Matanao, and the water tubing activities in Barangay Dungan Pekong.

She said that the distance between Barangay Colonsabak and Barangay Sabang is only five kilometers.

Sabornido said that Matanao is accessible via tricycle from Kilometer 71, at the crossroad of the Davao City-Cotabato City Highway, for P50 per passenger.

She said an electronic jeepney from Digos City to Matanao costs P80 per passenger.

Sabornido said the people can stay overnight at the houses of the indigenous peoples, who offer their houses for a meager fee.

She said Matanao recorded 100,000 tourists this quarter, which shows that the place is now popular even with local tourists.

Sabornido said they have tinkered with their Facebook page to have more reach, and partnered with the Department of Tourism on Cave Exploration, on the Davao Adventure Challenge, which will be launched this year in Cagayan de Oro City.
