“ You never know how much you love something until it’s taken away from you ,” Darren Hayes said . “ After almost a decade out of the spotlight and all this time in lockdown I found myself really missing the electric feeling that only a live audience can bring. After 25 years in the music industry, I feel like we’ve grown up together. To sing these songs again after all we’ve been through is going to feel like a family reunion. I’m beyond excited to return .”

Paul Dainty, President and CEO of TEG DAINTY, said , “ What a thrill it is to announce that we are touring Darren Hayes next year! Savage Garden didn’t just dominate the Australian music landscape, they were global superstars who topped the charts all over the world and broke chart records on an international scale. Only a handful of artists achieve the kind of longevity and continued global success that Darren enjoys, both through his work with Savage Garden and ongoing solo career. We can’t wait to welcome this national treasure back to Australian stages after a ten-year absence and experience his outstanding catalogue of songs in a live setting.”

2022 is shaping up to be a momentous year for Darren as he celebrates 25 years since the release of Savage Garden’s chart-topping, 10x ARIA Award-winning debut self-titled album and also 20 years as a solo artist. Earlier this year, Darren returned to the Australian charts with his first new solo single release in a decade: ‘ Let’s Try Being In Love’ – an upbeat, electro-pop dance anthem and his most personal song to date. Next week, fans will be gifted another taste in the form of a second single (and tour namesake), ‘Do You Remember? ’.

Just like his musical heroes George Michael and Prince, Darren has produced, arranged and composed new music entirely on his own, to be performed for the first time live on the ‘Do You Remember?’ tour.

The world-class calibre of Savage Garden ’s songs is undeniable: I Want You (1996’s best-selling single by an Australian artist), To The Moon And Back , Truly Madly Deeply (1997’s best-selling single by an Australian artist, which set a record for the longest time any single in history spent in the U.S. Hot Adult Contemporary chart – 23 weeks in total!), I Knew I Loved You , Affirmation – all songs that have soundtracked our lives and inspired future songwriters.

When you add Darren’s astounding solo output – including a string of hit singles such as Insatiable , Pop!ular and So Beautiful – to the equation, the stats don’t lie: 30 million albums sold globally, 2x chart-topping singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, 14x ARIA Awards, 10x APRA songwriting awards, 5x Top 10 albums and 9x Top 10 singles to date.

Other early career highlights for Darren include performing O Sole Mio in concert with Luciano Pavarotti and Savage Garden’s star turn at the 2000 Sydney Olympics closing ceremony, where the duo performed the glorious Affirmation .

Over the last couple of years, Darren has also released a number of standalone tracks and collaborations – including I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life (2019) with Brisbane indie band Cub Sport and Cold To Me (2021) with UK producer/DJ Louis La Roche (2021) – which introduced his brilliance to a whole new generation of fans.

Darren’s return to the stage is sure to remind Australian audiences that this national treasure is not only a prolific hitmaker, but also a consummate performer. With a setlist honouring a quarter-century of hits, Darren will perform a mix of classic fan favourites and new solo material while also paying special tribute to the 25th anniversary of Savage Garden’s chart-topping, self-titled debut album in a pop show specifically designed to bring crowds to their feet.

The ‘Do You Remember?’ Tour production was created by U2’s legendary show director Willie Williams and will see Darren reuniting with members of his original touring band from 1996.

Fans will embark on a journey from the first time they ever heard the phrase “Chica Cherry Cola” all the way through to the present day. And Darren promises to deliver the perfect mix of nostalgia and modernity, performing his songs with the emotional depth and theatricality they so richly deserve.

“ Whether you bought the first Savage Garden album on cassette or you’re a diehard fan of my solo work, I want to offer an escape ,” Darren says. “ Come to remember, come to forget, come to fall in love .”

After ten years living abroad, Darren finally returns to our shores – out and proud – to headline Sydney’s Mardi Gras parade at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 5 March, 2022.

It’s been way too long since Darren Hayes last graced Australian stages, and he’s never been more excited to perform live, as his fabulous full self, on the   ‘ Do You Remember?’ Tour – 25 Years Of Savage Garden, Solo Hits And More! The healing power of live music experienced en masse – complete with singalong moments and plenty of opportunities for dancing – is undeniable. You don’t want to snooze on this joyous celebration of life and self-acceptance! Fans are encouraged to secure tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Darren Hayes kicks off tour in Perth with a hit-filled show

Darren Hayes: Do You Remember Tour | RAC Arena | 31st Jan | ★ ★ ★ ★

darren hayes do you remember tour merchandise

After taking a decade off from the music industry, Darren Hayes has returned with a celebration of his 25 years in the game. Tuesday night saw him play the first of 26 dates that will take him across Australia before heading to the UK and North America.

Hayes career began with a meteoric rise to fame, Savage Garden shot of the gates with back-to-back hits that saw them top the charts around the world. But after two top selling albums the duo pulled the plug, leaving Hayes to pivot to a solo career.

At the same time Hayes was dealing with the end of his marriage to wife Colby Taylor, as he came to accept that he was gay. Publicly acknowledging his sexuality would not happen though for many years as he dealt with record company pressure to keep his personal life private.

As a solo artist he kept fans happy with several albums of material that explored many different styles of music while firmly staying between the flags of pop and adult contemporary. Then he walked away from making music, a period that saw him out of the spotlight for a decade.

Last year he returned with possibly his best album to date.  Homosexual  was a declaration of who Hayes is, gay, sexual, homosexual. The acclaimed album is filled with dance inducing electronica and overtly sexual lyrics.

Like his idol Madonna, Hayes has morphed through different physical looks and musical styles over the years. The raven-haired singer from Savage Garden transformed into the blond solo artist and has continued to change both aesthetically and musically with each new album.

Which made me wonder, who was the audience at his tour coming to see? Were people aware of anything he’d recorded after Savage Garden? Were their audience members like me, who really only became fans of his work after repetitively listening to his most recent record?

After a rousing set from support act Bachelor Girl, Hayes took to the stage, appearing at first as a shadow behind a curtain. “I’m the shy boy, you’re the coy boy.” he sang delivering an energetic cover of Pete Shelley’s  Homosapien.  It could be argued that the title track of Hayes album is a direct descendent of Shelley’s 70’s declaration of man love.

Appearing from behind the curtain Hayes held his hands high above his head forming a love heart, and then performed a section of Savage Garden’s  Chained to You.   He then kicked the party off with the list loving song  Affirmation. After decades of living in the USA Hayes’ voice has more than a slight twang, his USA accent coming through strongly as he counted off all the things he believes.

Just like when he performed the song at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the band paused for a second after he delivered the line “I believe you can’t control or choose your sexuality.” Joined by three backing singers Hayes delivered a dance routine, the first of many that would feature throughout the show.

The auditorium at the RAC Arena had been converted into a more intimate mode with the stage pulled forward and most of the seating curtained off, but it was clear that those who had bought tickets for the show were excited to see Darren Hayes return to the stage.

Next up was another Savage Garden hit  The Animal Song,  before moving into Hayes debut solo single  Insatiable.  The song was mashed up with Patrice Rushen’s early 80’s tune  Forget Me Nots –  which many audience members may have recognised more from its inclusion in Will Smith’s hit  Men in Black.

All You Pretty Things  from his latest album was up next, and then things got a little slower for the Savage Garden classic  To the Moon and Back . Hayes added another queer reference to the tune with elements of Bronski Beat’s  Smalltown Boy  being included.

Speaking to the audience for the first time Hayes said, “Thank you for sticking with me all these years.”  Next up was Savage Garden album track  Two Beds and a Coffee Machine  which saw one his backing singers acting out a sequence of packing a suitcase.

Hayes then took the suitcase and spoke about where his life was at in the late 1990s. Savage Garden were on a world tour when he spit up with his wife and began living as a gay man. He shared that the couple had found solace at the end of their relationship in the Madonna song the  Power of Goodbye, pausing to sing a section of the Ray of Light  track.

He then shared that after a year apart he met up with his former spouse and upon being given a suitcase of clothes and things he’d left behind, he realised he changed dramatically as a person since he’d begun accepting his sexuality. The anecdote led into  I Don’t Know You Anymore the song that closes Savage Garden’s second album.

Poison Blood  from the  Homosexual record, led into To the Moon and Back,  which was delivered with a section of Madonna’s  True Blue  melded into the song. It wasn’t the last Madonna musical moment in the show, but there were references to the Queen of Pop throughout. Hayes mimicked her dance moves, and the stage set up was very reminiscent of Madonna’s  Like a Virgin tour of 1985.

Lesser-known song  Casey, taken from Hayes 2007 double-album  This Delicate Thing We’ve Made, was a moment of treading water. Things picked up again when he moved into a series of tunes from his most recent offering.

In a slightly awkward interaction, the singer and one his backing vocalists acted out a phone conversation where they spoke about how audiences sometimes don’t like the newer material, before introducing it as the “party section” of the show.

Do You Remember  was quickly followed by  Let’s Try Being in Love. Hayes and his dancers were throwing shapes like mad, and the tiniest slither of Madonna’s  Vogue  was included. As Hayes launched into the song’s rap section singing “We can dance, or we can fuck” and “Got to see you naked, I just got to get you all alone”, my companion turned and asked “Wait, what is he singing?” She was clearly only familiar with his Savage Garden declarations of wanting to love someone truly madly and deeply.

The party continued with solo hit  Pop!ular  presented as a mash-up with Mel and Kim’s  Showing Out, while the Savage Garden hit  Break Me, Shake Me  incorporated elements of Indeep’s  Last Night a DJ Saved My Life.

As Hayes wrapped himself in a series of curtains, he sang  Darkness. Then the singalong  Dublin Sky  was performed. The show wrapped up with two more Savage Garden mega-hits  Crash and Burn  and the song that is a staple of FM radio  Truly Madly Deeply.

darren hayes do you remember tour merchandise

The enthusiastic crowd welcomed the band back to the stage as Hayes and one of the backing singers repeating their phone conversation schtick which saw them declare they’d forgotten to perform Savage Garden’s very first hit  Want You.  The night was closed off with the band’s last ever single  The Best Thing  – the perfect song to close the proceedings. By this stage everyone in the room was on their feet.

It’s the first night of the tour and there were a few moments of awkward silence as the musicians transitioned from one part of the show to the next, but these kinks will likely be worked out at subsequent shows. Some of the staged scenes were clunky, and Hayes left the stage too many times for costume changes that were maybe not entirely necessary, and many fans probably wished he chatted to the audience for a moment. Alas there were just a few short comments throughout the night.

Hayes is at the top of his game and his voice is flawless. You can’t help but feel this is a show that had big ambitions that were constrained by budgets. Hayes deserves to have a giant stage set, and six backing dancers like Kylie, Gaga, Robbie Williams or his idol Madonna. He deserves a big audience. We can only hope that a follow up to  Homosexual  comes quickly and Darren Hayes is back to stay.

There is something incredibly fabulous about seeing Darren Hayes at 50, singing up a storm and dancing like Madonna, being proud of his sexuality, and putting it at the forefront his work.

We need more artists like Darren Hayes singing about being a homosexual, we need more singer like Troye Sivan singing My My My and strutting proudly, we need more of Sam Smith swinging from chandeliers in platform shoes.

Darren Hayes’ tour is heading to Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane.

Darren Hayes: The DO YOU REMEMBER? Tour

  • This event has passed.

Listen to Darren Hayes

As the lead singer and songwriter of duo Savage Garden, and as a solo recording artist in his own right, Darren Hayes has held a career spanning over two decades. On Homosexual, Hayes’ first solo album in over ten years, he explores coming to terms with his sexuality in his 20s, internalized homophobia and the pressures by the music industry to conform, and his journey to becoming his most authentic self.

Released on his own label, Powdered Sugar Productions, Hayes composed, produced, performed, and arranged everything on the album. While it examines heavy themes including childhood trauma and struggles with depression, the album’s dance-ready tracks filter his memories through the lens of joy and self-acceptance he experiences today.

Since 1996, Hayes has released six albums: two Savage Garden records and four solo offerings. He has toured the world many times and performed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games closing ceremonies. He has sold over 27 million albums globally, producing two Billboard number one singles with Savage Garden. The ballad “Truly Madly Deeply” is the longest-running adult contemporary hit in the chart’s history.

Live Review: Darren Hayes – 28th March 2023 – London Palladium, London, UK

darren hayes do you remember tour merchandise

Having recently wrapped up a successful sold-out tour down under, playing to fans the width and breadth of his homeland of Australia throughout February, ex-Savage Garden frontman turned solo star Darren Hayes turned his sights on the UK, bringing his flamboyant and fabulous new solo show to British fans who have waited a good decade for the pop star to make his return.

Hayes first found fame in the mid-nineties as lead singer and songwriter of Savage Garden, reshaping not just the pop landscape of nis native Australia, but helping the rejuvenation of the global pop market thanks to two stellar albums and a string of mammoth hit singles including I Want You, To The Moon and Back, The Animal Song and the Billboard US number one, Truly, Madly, Deeply before the band disbanded and Hayes went on to lead a successful solo career, releasing several albums before taking a decade long hiatus.

Returning to the pop world at the end of 2022 with his recently released fifth solo album, Homosexual , Hayes explores sexuality and his newfound freedom and self-acceptance of being a member of the LGBTQI+ community and mixing these topics with a fresh pop and disco feel that is very much in the style of Haye’s previous work. Alongside that release the pop icon has taken back to the road to promote the album and also look back and celebrate his time in one of pop music’s most successful and celebrated duos.

As we found our place to our sets within the famous settings of the London Palladium, it was immediately evident that this was going to be a fully charged night of nostalgia and music. Fans donned Savage Garden t-shirts as well as attire with ‘Homosexual’ spread across the front in support of the Aussie hitmaker who emerged on stage as a dancing silhouette at 8.15pm; gyrating and leg-kicking his energetic way through an opening mashup of Homosapien , taken from his latest studio effort and Savage Garden single, Chained to You behind large draped white curtains that were displayed like windows peeking into a scene of night time naughtiness.

Savage Gardens second album, Affirmation was given further nods early into the set with the title track and The Animal Song demanding their rightful place and Hayes’ impeccable falsetto reaching up into the venues historically structured heights; fans up and dancing right from the opening song and unseated for the entirety of the show.

Medleys were out in full force throughout the duration of the set – a perfect mix of debut solo hit Insatiable tied in nicely with Patrice Rushen’s Forget Me Nots and a closing nod to George Michaels Fastlove – evolving Insatiable into an entirely transformed and pulsating hit, while nearing the end of the set Break Me Shake Me gelled effortless with Indeep’s Last Night A DJ Saved My Life . All You Pretty Things and Step into the Light was a perfect marriage as Hayes performed the tracks accompanied by an array of multi-coloured lights flashing around the stage and the venue like a true Pride seasoned event, giving further encouragement to the crowd to remain on foot and dancing along to the pop star dominating the stage with his band and back-up singers who also provided back up dancing roles to many of the tracks offered up.

A segment of new numbers found its footing in the centre of the show with a showcase of some of Homosexuals highlight additions including Do You Remember?, Homosexual (Act One) and Let’s Try Being in Love being standouts from the new record and being widely accepted by the crowd despite Hayes and one of his backing dancers doing a phone bit in the lead up, joking about the widely known fact that newer songs by legacy artists are usually not so welcomed; at the same time showing off Hayes’ love of theatrics in his performance and adding multiple performative elements to his shows. And, while the interpretive dance to Let’s Try Being in Love seemed a little homemade, it was its rawness and improvised feel that added to the shows casual and ‘unfiltered’ feel.

Up-tempo and sexually charged were the dominant themes of the set but stripped back moments were where Hayes really shone, as well as moments of vulnerability where the singer would let us into moments in his life and journey as a son, a singer and a proud gay man. A gorgeous piano led performance of Two Beds and a Coffee Machine was paired with Hayes describing in detail his journey as a child in an abusive family set up to finding fame and acceptance by fans as part of Savage Garden and moving to New York to find his first same-sex relationship following a marriage to a woman named Colby and the effects of these things, and this woman, who he described as having such admiration for, on his life. This led perfectly into an ode to Colby with I Don’t Know You Anymore , leaving many in the crowd, as well as Hayes himself, teary-eyed.

As the new numbers were welcomed by fans, it was of course the Savage Garden hits that the crowd were ultimately longing for. As the space effects started to reverberate throughout the venue, the crowd exploded with excitement as Hayes turned out a stellar performance of To The Moon And Back early on in the night. I Knew I Loved You was opened by a brief cover of Madonna’s True Blue . Crash and Burn and closing number, The Best Thing had the crowd singing back to the superstar but it was without doubt, Billboard number one hit Truly, Madly, Deeply , with its minimalistic instrumentation, and power-pop juggernaut, I Want You that were the highlights of the show with Hayes making off for a quick costume change ahead of the latter; emerging from the stage in a Saturday Night Fever style white suit and tied back hair to ignite the venue with the pop hit.

Early into the set Hayes confessed to the crowd “I wasn’t sure anyone would turn up but you did”, showing a genuine appreciation to his audience, some who have waited decades to see the singer perform some of his incredible repertoire. But the fans really did show up and the singer truly turned out a spectacular night filled with music, love self-acceptance and nostalgia. It was an incredible night overflowing with some of the pops finest pennings from a true superstar of pop!

Darren Hayes announces ‘Do You Remember?’ Australian tour dates

The singer will be celebrating 25 years of Savage Garden

Darren Hayes

Darren Hayes has announced his first Australian tour in over a decade, slating a six-date run of shows for January and February of 2023.

The ‘Do You Remember?’ tour, announced today (March 2), will belatedly commemorate 25 years since Hayes rose to prominence as one half of pop duo Savage Garden . Across two studio albums, Hayes and instrumentalist Darren Jones achieved three Number One singles – the last of which, 1999’s ‘I Knew I Loved You’, was the last song by an Australian to top the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 years before the success of Gotye ‘s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’.

In addition to performing Savage Garden’s biggest hits, the ‘Do You Remember?’ tour will also see Hayes reportedly reunite with musicians that played in the duo’s touring band from 1996.

The tour also celebrates Hayes’ return to making music after a lengthy hiatus, with ‘Do You Remember?’ also serving as the title of a forthcoming single. It will mark Hayes’ second single for the year, following ‘Let’s Try Being In Love’ from January. Hayes has only made sporadic appearances since the release of his 2011 album ‘Secret Codes And Battleships’, including a duet with Cub Sport on the 2019 single ‘I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life’.

In a press statement, Hayes expressed excitement at the prospect of returning to the live arena after a period of inactivity.

“After almost a decade out of the spotlight and all this time in lockdown, I found myself really missing the electric feeling that only a live audience can bring,” he said. “After 25 years in the music industry, I feel like we’ve grown up together. To sing these songs again, after all we’ve been through, is going to feel like a family reunion.”

Darren Hayes announces the ‘Do You Remember?’ UK tour for 2023

Darren Hayes, the multi-award-winning songwriter, iconic performer and one-half of the globally revered Savage Garden, has announced a major UK tour for 2023, his first in over a decade! The tour will celebrate 25 years of Savage Garden, his well-established solo career and more.

As the lead singer and songwriter of duo Savage Garden, Australian-born Darren Hayes quickly dominated the pop landscape, achieving an impressive 10 UK Top 40 hits from ‘I Want You’, ‘To The Moon and Back’ to ‘I Knew I Loved You’ and US Billboard number ones, including the timeless ‘Truly Madly Deeply’.

With Savage Garden and as a solo recording artist in his own right, Darren has sold over 30 million albums globally. Fans got a taste of his first new music in over a decade with the strikingly personal ‘Let’s Try Being In Love’ and ‘Do You Remember?’ released earlier this year ahead of his long-awaited new solo record.

The evolution of Darren Hayes continues to flourish with the recent release of his new track, ‘Poison Blood’. The song provided an avenue for Darren to explore darker themes of depression and suicide and, as a result, produce some of his most earnest and raw lyrics to date.

Darren on Poison Blood video: “My song ‘Poison Blood’, deals with depression, which is such a delicate subject in and of itself, so when it came time to make a visual component, I knew I wanted to make a music video that was extremely intimate but was also true to the visual inspirations and musical references that have shaped this new era of music. Everything has been tinged by an 80s wistfulness and had a magical quality to it.”

‘Poison Blood’ was written, orchestrated, and produced entirely by Darren in Los Angeles. The video, directed by filmmaker Alex Hyner, premiered on YouTube and can be viewed below.

Inspired by their love for 80s music videos, particularly the opening shot of Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry’, Darren and Alex created a video that beautifully accompanies the emotive and powerful Poison Blood. Filmed mostly on equipment and techniques available in 1985, the video captures Darren at his most raw, unguarded and real.

Ahead of the UK dates, the iconic performer returns to the stage in his native Australia before hitting our shores in March for a true celebration of Savage Garden, solo hits and much more.

On the new tour, Darren said: “You never know how much you love something until it’s taken away from you. After almost a decade out of the spotlight and all this time in lockdown, I found myself really missing the electric feeling that only a live audience can bring.

“After 25 years in the music industry, I feel like we’ve grown up together. To sing these songs again after all we’ve been through is going to feel like a family reunion. I’m beyond excited to return.”

Darren Hayes will perform at New Theatre Oxford on 25 March 2023, and tickets are now on sale.
