The Jacksons on the 1980 leg of The Destiny Tour

The Destiny World Tour was the third concert tour by The Jacksons to promote the group's Destiny . The tour began on January 22, 1979, with their opening concert in Bremen, Germany. They visited 3 continents and 9 countries, playing 83 concerts in the United States alone. The tour concluded in Hawaii on January 13, 1980.

Overview [ ]

The tour began on January 22, 1979, in Bremen, Germany shortly after the release of the Destiny album the previous December. The tour visited three continents including concerts in Africa and Europe before taking on a 79-city tour in the United States. The Jacksons took a four-month break from touring starting June 1979 so lead singer Michael Jackson could finish working on his solo album Off the Wall . The first leg of the tour saw the Jacksons playing moderate sized arenas, such as the Valley Forge Music Fair in Philadelphia which seats 3,000, but after the release of Michael's album Off the Wall, the brothers revamped their show for larger arenas. For the second leg, additional songs were added to the setlist, most notably songs from Michael's new album. The opening act in the second leg was L.T.D. The tour grossed an estimated 7.5 million dollars.

Michael started with touring experiences on a very young age. Even before he became famous he and his brothers performed at talent shows and as opening acts on bills.  When they formed in 1964, Michael Jackson was just six years old, but his natural gift for singing, dancing and entertaining got the people enthusiastic.

In these early years the Jackson 5 , Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon and lead singer Michael played local clubs and bars in Gary Indiana and moving further afield as there talents grew and they could compete in bigger competitions. The talent shows took the Jackson Five to places like Harlem's Apollo Theater, where they won an amateur-night competition in 1967. All the while, Michael Jackson studied the moves of the masters: their onstage choreography, how they phrased a song, the way they worked a crowd. His heroes and tutors included James Brown, Sammy Davis jr., Jackie Wilson and Fred Astair.

During the Jackson 5 period there were many small tours and concerts. On October 9, 1970 the Jackson 5 embarked on thier first national tour. The group visited cities across the U.S including Boston, Cincinnati, Tennessee and New York City.   In October 1972, the Jackson 5 embarked on their first-ever International tour. Some concerts included stops at Munich, Paris, and 4 British cities. The Jackson 5 broke the Liverpool Empire attendance records, previously held by the Beatles. They also performed the Royal Command Performance in the presence of the Queen Mother.

With The Jacksons Michael had some mayor tours.   Starting in 1977, The Jacksons began a two and a half week tour of Europe. This tour inlcuded the Royal Command Performance at King's Hall, Glascow, Scotland as part of the queens Silver Jubilee celebrations. The Jacksons also toured in 1978 which included Europe and the U.S.A. The Jacksons' began a world tour to promote the " Destiny " album on January 22, 1979 with their opening concert in Bremen. Countries that were visited included Britain, Holland, France, and Kenya. April 14, 1979 the Jackson's began their U.S tour in Cleveland, Ohio and finished in Washington, D.C after visiting 80 U.S cities.  The Jacksons' 1981 Triumph Tour began in Memphis, Tennessee, and concluded in Los Angeles. The Jacksons set a record breaking 4 sold out concerts in Los Angeles. The Triumph Tour was a 39 city tour of the U.S.A. In 1984, The Jacksons toured across the U.S.A and Canada for 5 months with the Victory Tour . The tour began in Kansas city, Arrowhead Stadium, July 6, 1984 and ended December 9, 1984 in Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles. During the 55 concerts that were performed, over 2 million people attended. A record $75 million was grossed. Michael donated $5 million to charities, all proceeds he collected from the tour. It was at the last show of the tour that Michael annouced his split from The Jacksons.

The Bad Tour was Michael Jackson's first solo tour. The tour began with 14 sell out concerts at the Korakuen Stadium, Yokohama, on September 12, 1987. The U.S.A leg of the Bad Tour began in Kansas city to 2 sell-out concerts in Kemper Arena, bringing in $700,000 and $200,000 more than any other artist at the venue. The European leg of the tour was kicked off with 2 concerts at Flaminio Stadium, Rome. While performing in London, England Michael breaks a world record (as shown in the Guinness Book Of World Records) with 504,000 people attending 7 sold out shows at Wembley Stadium, more than any other artist. The 123rd and final show took place in Los Angeles at the Sports Arena on January 24, 1989. Bad World Tour figures total 123 concerts to 4.4 million people. The 16 month tour grossed over $125 million, more than any other entertainer had on a single tour. During the tour Michael invited underprivileged children to watch him perform, and contributed to hospitals, orphanages, and other charities.

The Dangerous Tour began in the Olympic Stadium in Munich, Germany on June 27, 1992. Michael performed 18 numbers, 4 from the "Dangerous" album, to a sell out crowd of 72,000. The second leg of the tour began in August 1993 and ended with 5 sold out concerts in Mexico City with an audience of at least 500,000 people. The remainder of the tour was cancelled due to illness. During the Dangerous tour Michael performed for approximately 3.5 million people in 67 concerts. Michael donated the proceeds from his tour to charities, including the Heal The World Foundation.

The first leg of the HIStory Tour began in Prague, Czech Republic at Letna Park on September 7, 1996, and ended in Honolulu, Hawaii at Aloha Stadium on January 4, 1997. "MJ" highlights Michael Jackson's creative genius in musical coming to Denver Center for the Performing Arts

I n 10 days the creative genius of Michael Jackson will be brought back to life at the Buell Theatre, as the Denver Center for the Performing Arts hosts "MJ" the musical for two and a half weeks.

"MJ" is a two-and-a-half-hour musical that uses Jackson's greatest hits to tell a story of how he created the Dangerous World Tour. However, the cast and crew do a great job at also telling the story of how Jackson developed a dedication to perfecting his craft.

"It is really inspiring to have art that outlasts you," said Roman Banks, the actor who was cast to portray Jackson in the national tour.

Banks said he has grown an even greater respect for Jackson through his role and has learned so much about why Jackson was so committed to entertaining to the highest level.

"He was so intentional with what he wore, how he wore his hair, how he moved and talked, the way he staged performances, the way he choreographed," Banks said. "Everything was so geniusly (sic) interpreted to not only serve the current time he was living in, but the time he wouldn't be here after."

CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas traveled to Salt Lake City for an exclusive advanced preview of the show. Afterward, he spent his day with the cast and crew backstage. There, all of those who spoke with Thomas talked about how they grew up not only listening to Jackson, but also imitating his dancing and singing.

Now that they are cast in the production, they said they've learned how well-rounded of an artist Jackson was.

"You can't just be a one trick pony," one of the cast members said.

Backstage the cast is consistently striving to make sure they imitate Jackson as best as possible for the audiences, something the production also educates audiences about.

"(MJ) talked about wanting to perfect perfection," Banks said. "It is continuing to be excellent, never settling."

"We are limitless, and MJ strived to be limitless to the end of time," said Jamaal Fields-Green, the alternate for MJ. "His fanbase is massive. So, there is a lot of expectations from people who come to see the show."

Those who are part of the show said they hoped audiences would walk away from the musical with a better understanding of Jackson's commitment to his art, while also feeling like they had a night to relive Jackson's music on stage.

"(The story is about) being the best artist, but also being the best person you can be in whatever you do. Giving it your all and owing it to yourself and others to give it 100%," Fields-Green said. "You get to see the human behind the icon. It really humanizes Michael. Of course, you are going to have the music, of course you are going to have the dance. But the story of it all is what pulls the audience in. To completely see who this juggernaut was. And he was a human being at the end of the day."

MJ plays the Buell Theatre April 10 through the 28. For more information on tickets from the DCPA visit the officials website .

Nothing was happening. The photograph in the theatrical tuxedo, with the Gene Kelly white socks and loafers, needed something more than just a white background. I needed a background to support the metaphorical symbolism of the tuxedo and the young kid with the big talent. In an urban alley against an old wall of real brick, I directed Michael to be more animated in his pose. And I told him to smile. Voila! Off the Wall. Perhaps after the Great Wall and the Berlin Wall, one of the most famous walls in the world. A wall I picked to be our backstage, the alley door of a Broadway theater”
