Are Disney Travel Agents Free?

You’ve finally made the big decision… you’re going to Disney World!  But now you’re facing the daunting task of trying to plan your Disney vacation. Sure, it’d be great to have an expert to help you plan your trip and maybe even make reservations on your behalf.  A Disney travel agent can certainly do that.  But are Disney Travel Agents free, or do you have to pay them for their services?

Most Disney Travel Agents don’t charge you anything to plan your vacation or make reservations for you.   Of course you’ll still have to pay for the products you purchase — theme park tickets, hotel rooms, and such — but you most likely won’t have to pay an agent directly to handle all of this for you.  Why?  Disney pays the agent for you.

Each agent gets a commission from Disney for the bookings they’ve made on your behalf.  That’s why most Disney travel agencies have a policy of not charging their clients any sort of itinerary planning fee — because they’re already getting paid.

Does using a travel agent make your Disney vacation cost more?

The commission that Disney pays to a travel agency for handling your booking does not increase the cost of your trip.  Disney does not raise prices on hotel rooms, tickets, etc. just because a trip was booked through a travel agent.

Why not? Isn’t Disney having to give up some of the profit on the trip to send a check to your travel agent?  Perhaps.  But the way Disney sees it, your travel agent is doing a lot of the work that would normally have to be done by Disney Cast Members.  They’re explaining options to you and answering questions — all work that would normally have to be done by a Disney employee.

And, Disney knows that the best travel agents will take time to get to know you and your family so that your trip is just right — that makes you more likely to come back for another trip.  So for Disney, it’s a good business policy.

What are the benefits of using a Disney travel agent?

A good Disney travel agent will will make sure that you’re getting the best price on your Disney vacation.  A great Disney travel agent will add new Disney World deals and offers to your vacation even after it’s booked!  They’ll keep track of new discounts as they’re announced and apply them to your trip automatically.  There’s nothing like getting an email from your travel agent that says they found a new discount and were able to knock $500 off the cost of your trip!

Travel agents are great sources of information, too. They can offer suggestions on the best rides at Disney World, help you pick an Adventures by Disney destination, or even answer common cruise questions such as, “ is a Disney Cruise worth it ,” or “ does Disney Cruise offer drink packages? ”

Add in the fact that they’ll wake up at dawn to make Dining Reservations (so you don’t have to), that they’ll help you keep track of payment due dates and booking windows, and do so much more — it’s not hard to see that there are plenty of reasons to use a Disney Travel Agent .

How to pick a Disney Travel Agent

There are plenty of agencies that can book Disney trips – but how can you find a reputable one?

Start out by making sure you’re dealing with an agency that’s designated as an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner — that specific wording is a sign that the agents specialize in Disney travel and have undergone training designed directly by Disney.

Then, investigate just a bit further.  You’ll see these agencies show a designation of “Earmarked,” which is an indicator of how much Disney travel they book each year.  Agencies start out at Bronze, and can go up through the ranks of Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond levels.  Find a Platinum or Diamond earmarked agency, and you’ll know that you’ve found an agency that arranges thousands of Disney trips every year… true experts in their fields!

Next up, you’ll want to find out for sure if the agency is truly free to use or if they charge you any booking fees.  As we mentioned before, most travel agencies do not charge a planning fee, so it’s free to use their services.  Still, there are some agencies that do charge fees for their services.  If you do decide use an agency that charges its clients a fee on top of the commission it receives from Disney, make sure you understand how much the fee is, what it covers, and if it’s refundable should your plans change.  You might also ask if you have to pay additional fees for things like modifications to your trip or other planning services you might need later.

Booking vacations with a Disney Travel Agent

Once you’ve picked a travel agency, booking your vacation is usually a pretty simple prospect.  You’ll typically start by filling out a contact form (or calling the agency) to provide some basic information such as your name, phone number or email address, and very basic details about what you want to book.

Then, the agency will assign a specific travel agent to you. That person will be your primary contact for the duration of your trip planning — they’ll get in touch with you to find out more details about your dream vacation and how they can help make it a reality.

Once you’ve gone through all the options and decided what to book, your agent will handle everything for you.  They’ll make your reservations and take your payment information for the deposit that’s due upon booking.  Afterwards, they’ll monitor the timeline of your trip to make sure that all further bookings (like dining and recreation) happen exactly on schedule, and will make sure you don’t miss any payment deadlines along the way.

All you have to do is relax, pack, and head to the airport on time!

Planning for a Disney trip can be overwhelming, even for the most seasoned Disney visitor. There are SO many things to consider and learn.  Where do you stay ?  What’s the dining situation like ?  What types of tickets are there ? Don’t worry, you do NOT have to figure this all out on your own.

A decade ago, planning your Disney trip was do-able…and even fun — like the anticipation of seeing all of the presents under the tree before Christmas. But today, things are different. With Park Pass Reservations, Disney’s Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selection in place , dining that needs to be booked 60 days in advance, literally dozens of hotels on property and hundreds off-property, dessert parties , memorable behind-the-scenes tours , activities , and more…it’s just plain overwhelming to try to figure it all out. Disney World is about TWICE the size of Manhattan…and just as packed with options.

There Is SO Much to Do in Disney World

So, if reading this article is starting to give you anxiety, take a deep breath… let it out… and repeat this mantra, “Fish are friends, not food.” Ok, ok, not the mantra you’re looking for, but Disney vacations are supposed to be magical, right?

Not drive you panic-driven madness. Those tear-jerking commercials all involve happy families without a care in the world, not anxiety-riddle adults on the verge of exhaustion, desperately trying to mobile order lunch (yep, that’s a thing…) before their hangry family launches into full meltdown (we’re not speaking from experience at all… 😂).

So, how do you become one of those carefree families in the commercials? Well, that might take a bit of planning…

If you’ve been to Disney before , you may have a general idea. Maybe a specific idea. Maybe a very specific idea, including a spreadsheet and a three-ring binder detailing every move your family will make once they pass beneath that magical archway.

But regardless of where you fall on this planning spectrum, using a Disney-certified travel agent  will help ensure not only that you’re checking off all of the right boxes, but that you have all of the right boxes on your checklist, to begin with!

Why use a Disney Travel Agent? Here are a few reasons!

They do the math for you. So, you can put away your high school economics book and spreadsheet for finding the break-even point on discount rate versus park days ratios. And the best part is, they’ve been doing this a REALLY. LONG. TIME.

So they probably already know what deal is best. Before it’s even announced.  And since they usually get a little head’s up from Disney about upcoming discounts, they can work it onto your existing vacation for you, usually before you even know it’s an option! So not only do you not have to worry about doing the math (phew!), you also don’t have to worry about missing out on the discount (since sometimes those bad boys are limited).

Your agent’s got your back. They can advise you on resort choice, vacation package, and tickets that will suit your family’s unique needs. You may not know this, but Disney World is in Florida (shocker, right?). And Florida gets hurricanes ! In fact, hurricane season lasts from June to November, so chances are, when you’re visiting Disney World, it might be during hurricane season! Working with Travel Agents Specializing in Disney Vacations

The amount of research necessary to plan all the details of a Disney vacation can be too time-consuming or even intimidating for some people. If you are feeling overwhelmed by all the options, a great (FREE) solution is to use the services of a travel agent who specializes in Disney travel .

“Disney Specialists” have completed the College of Disney Knowledge, an online course offered by Disney that covers Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney. This is a great starting point, but frankly it’s not enough. Believe it or not, a travel agent can easily become a “Disney Specialist” in a few hours, without ever having visited a Disney vacation destination in person!

For that reason, we recommend picking an agency such as Small World Vacations that focuses on Disney travel and requires its agents to have advanced experience with Disney destinations, including in-person, on-site visits.

How Come It’s Free?

What to expect, avoid problems with payments, our personal recommendation.

Normally the client pays nothing extra for the service provided by a travel agency. Travel agents make their living from a small commission paid by the travel supplier (in this case, Disney) for the resort hotel rooms, theme park passes and vacation packages they book. The agent is compensated by this commission for the time, effort and attention she provides to the client.

Some agencies do charge for making changes or cancellations. The agency we recommend, Small World Vacations , does not charge any fees, including cancellation or change fees.

Travel agencies always charge a fee for making air reservations, because the airlines no longer pay commission. Small World Vacations does not book plane tickets for that very reason: it’s cheaper and easier for you to do it yourself! ( Read our advice and tips on booking your own airfare .)

Because they work on a commission basis, it’s unfair to ask a travel agent to do a lot of research for you, and then book elsewhere. Likewise, a reputable travel agent normally will not take over the booking of a trip from another travel agent, because this is considered “stealing” someone else’s earned commission.

An agent who specializes in Disney travel should be able to provide you with accurate information, including pricing, for Disney resorts, theme park passes and packages. She will book your trip and seek out the best deals for you — even rebooking your trip when better rates come up, if possible. Additionally, the best agents will help you with “extras” like booking your Advance Dining Reservations .

Once you book with a travel agent, he or she becomes your single point of contact for all changes in your travel plans. You cannot make changes or cancellations directly through Disney if you are working with a travel agent. For most people this feature is convenient, but if you prefer to control everything yourself, booking with a travel agent is not for you.

Travel agents are generally geared toward long-term planning (one month in advance or more). That’s primarily because it can take 3-4 weeks for them to get the paperwork from Disney once they’ve made your reservations, and then they have to get that paperwork to you. If you’re planning a last-minute trip, it’s usually better to do it yourself.

One of the most important things you need to find out about a travel agency is how they handle payments. The agency should send your payments immediately and directly to Disney. If you give them a credit card number, the card payment should be processed by Disney. If you write a check, it should be made out to Disney, not to the agency. That is how the agency we recommend ( Small World Vacations ) processes payments. They don’t hold your money — it goes straight to Disney.

DO NOT use an agency that collects your money and holds that money in its own accounts! Agencies that hold your money may have cash flow problems. They may be using your money to pay their suppliers for earlier clients’ vacations, and then hoping to use future clients’ money to pay for your vacation. It’s sort of like a pyramid scheme, and it can have the same result if their cash flow dries up.

When you let an agency process your payment through its own accounts, you have no guarantee that they’ll actually pay Disney for your vacation. There is also a risk that they’ll delay paying so long that your reservation may be canceled. If you have booked a Disney cruise, full payment must be received by Disney by a certain date so that you can reserve excursions and make Palo reservations, but if the agency sits on your money, you may lose your chance to make those reservations.

Some agencies are bonded, but if they default or close their doors, the bond may not cover all the money they’ve been collecting from clients. In some states, agencies that process payments are legally required to put your money in an escrow account for your protection, but many states don’t require this. In any case, there is no reason why the agency should earn interest on your money!

By the way, we don’t recommend paying for a vacation by check or debit card. You have much better protection against losing your money if you pay with a credit card.

The travel agent we use personally, talk with all the time, and can recommend wholeheartedly is Sue Pisaturo , whose company is called Small World Vacations .

• A High School or GED graduate? (College degree is preferred)
• A Disney Visitor — have you visited a Disney destination more than 3 times as an adult in the past 5 years?

Requirements to Succeed at Small World Big Fun ... are you: 

• An outgoing person who loves to meet new people and is involved in your community? Sales and marketing experience is definitely a plus!
• A motivated, self-starter with a professional work ethic who is ready to build a business as an independent contractor?
• An excellent writer with great verbal communication skills?
• Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills?
• Regularly willing to commit time to marketing and establishing yourself as a Disney expert?
• Comfortable using the internet and Microsoft Office products?
• Active on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, blogging, message boards, etc.)?
• A person who has traveled to a Disney destination at least once within the last 12 months?
• An excellent employee with equally excellent references?
• Willing to do what it takes to take care of the client (i.e. up before dawn to make dining/FastPass reservations, apply discounts, etc.)?

Keep in mind — while we are all about BIG FUN,  working with Small World BIG FUN is NOT a hobby!  We are looking for new agents who are professional and capable of investing at least 15-20 hours per week to build their business.  As your business grows the hours will increase.

I’m normally a DIY person, and it will be late next year for our next trip. But frankly…I’m considering booking with a TA Disney/Universal week.

Admittedly it’s written specific to the TouringPlans TA, but most of what it covers, outside access to subscription only TouringPlans tools, is pretty standard for a Travel Agent experience.

Additionally, talking over basic troubleshooting steps, where to go in the park for help when you get stuck, and which attractions are most commonly booked first, are all great tips to have in your arsenal.

Offer Strategies & Planned Itineraries

We get it, this isn’t going to be cookie-cutter to every visitor and every destination and that’s why it’s so important to work along with your travel agent instead of against them. When you keep the conversation flowing about your wants and wishes for your vacation your travel agent can customize an itinerary with as detailed or as lax as you want your days to be!

Most of the time when promotions launch there’s a whole slew of Disney tech troubles that lead to hours sitting on the phone or trying to access the changes page on your reservation. Do you really have the time to sit on the phone or computer all day? Why mess with all of that aggravation when you can have someone else do that for you?

While Disney puts out promotions and special offers from time to time, they’re certainly not going to be reaching out to you if your hotel or package booking is compatible to help you save money. The hotel will help you book the offer and will work with your agent to see that the new booking gets placed with the agency so they can continue to help you on your next travel. A similar program exists for Disney Cruise Lines, so be sure to ask your travel agent about placeholders before you sail, too!

Booking a Disney hotel and buying theme park tickets may seem easy enough, but a complex array of options and add-ons can make it daunting to do anything from picking the best Disney World hotel for your trip to choosing the best Disney World restaurants for your family.

Popular add-ons like behind-the-scenes tours and character meals book up well in advance. If you have your heart set on brunch with Mickey and Minnie, you sometimes have to be faster than Dash from "The Incredibles" to secure your spot.

Unless, of course, you use an authorized Disney vacation planner.

On a recent visit, I wanted to try out the newly reintroduced Disney Dining Plan . By booking through Mouse Counselors, they reserved my hotel room and added the Disney Dining Plan for me. I didn't have to lift a finger.

"Certain add-on experiences like a princess makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or a behind-the-scenes tour of Magic Kingdom open at midnight or 6 a.m. Eastern time, so having someone else handle the booking can be advantageous," Law shared. "Many agents will also take care of scheduling airport transfers and crib and stroller rentals," she added.

For the best possible experience, you should provide a few important pieces of information for your vacation planner.

"We'll obviously need your dates and the names and ages of everyone in your travel party, but there are other details that can help us build the best vacation for you," Law said. "If you aren't familiar with the details of Disney World hotels, for example, you can help us find the right one by telling us what you are looking for in a hotel. Do you want proximity to a certain park or the best pool for kids? Are you on a budget, or do you want to splurge?"

Knowing the answers to these questions before you begin working with your planner can help them guide you in the right direction.

They actively search for discounts

It's no secret that "Disney World" and "budget vacation" aren't exactly synonymous, but there are ways to save money on a visit to Walt Disney World .

Disney periodically offers discounted tickets and hotel sales that can help you save hundreds on your vacation.

Availability for these discounts is limited, though, and you sometimes have to stalk Disney's website so you don't miss out when a new offer is released. However, a good Disney vacation planner, whose literal job is booking Disney trips, will be up bright and early to ensure you get one of the discounted rooms or packages when they are released.

They also monitor your reservation for price drops. If prices decrease for your dates, they can wave their magic wand and modify your existing reservation to take advantage of the lower price.

This is exactly what Law was able to do for me on a recent stay at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. As a Disney World annual passholder, I was eligible for a hotel discount. After my initial booking, Law applied the discount, saving me nearly $100.

They can plan your itinerary

If you're paying a large sum for a vacation, the last thing you want to do is wait in long lines, miss out on activities because you're in the wrong place at the wrong time or spend time doing things you don't want to do. If you want to maximize your time at Disney, you need a wealth of knowledge to know what to do and when to do it.

You can research and learn much of it yourself. However, if you're a once- or twice-in-a-lifetime Disney visitor, researching crowd calendars and in-depth planning guides may not be the best use of your time.

Without a doubt, having your vacation planner lay out a daily itinerary for your specific dates is a valuable asset. Before you book, you need to find out how detailed your vacation planner will be if that is a service you are interested in. However, this is where your agent's time may come at a bit of a cost to you.

"Most agents do offer help with itinerary planning, but some charge a fee for this service and some don't offer it at all," Law said. "It's important to speak to your agent before booking to ensure you are on the same page with the expected level of hands-on service."

When I booked through Mouse Counselors, Law sent me a thorough guide that detailed how to mobile order food from quick-service restaurants, how to use Genie+ and Lightning Lanes to skip the lines, how to use transportation options in the park, how to use my MagicBand+ or phone as my park ticket and hotel room key, and so much more. As a frequent visitor, I was aware of most of these tips, but they are helpful details you may be unfamiliar with if you don't visit Disney often.

You can be as involved as you want

If you're a Type A personality and want to be involved in every step along the way, you can work hand in hand with your vacation planner to ensure you're comfortable with the itinerary and cost of your trip.

If you're hands-off and want someone to handle all the details and tell you where to go and when, you can also do that.

"In addition to booking your vacation, travel agents can assist with navigating the Disney app, linking your resort reservation and explaining the Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane systems," Law said.

It's also possible for your Disney vacation planner to make your dining reservations at the exact time they open up to you before your trip. Your experience with your agent is entirely up to you, but if "Genie+" and "Lightning Lane" are foreign terms to you, your Disney vacation planner can guide you.

I prefer making my own dining reservations, but Law ensured I knew she was at my service if I needed assistance.

Other than a cup of ice water and the celebratory buttons available at each park, there's not much that's truly free at Disney World.

However, an agent's booking services come at no cost to you. Disney pays authorized Disney vacation planners commissions from the sales of hotel rooms, tickets, dining packages and more.

They can book anything you see online or find the lower prices you may not have found yourself. So, while your trip to Disney probably won't be inexpensive, the benefit of having an agent doesn't add to the cost.

Some agents may charge an additional fee for specific add-on services, but most Disney vacation planners offer the majority of their services free of charge to travelers booking a Disney trip.

Do know that they make their money off commissions from Disney. This means if you book the bulk of your hotel expenses yourself elsewhere, it may not make sense to work with a vacation planner on that trip unless you do find one who charges a la carte fees for planning services.

Bottom line

Not only can these planners book trips to Disney World, but they can typically also book trips to Disneyland , aboard Disney Cruise Line ships , with Adventures by Disney and to Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii.

More like a Blacklisted kind of way

It’s the kind of information that they know people know, but they don’t want people to share.

IF YOU LOVE YOUR TRAVEL AGENT- STOP READING THIS POST. Please, stay with them and keep them employed. Go to the Beginner’s Guide and shield your eyes!

I’m not anti- travel agent, just pro informed choice when it comes to a vacation. I’ve used travel agents, I think they’re pretty nifty, but the interwebs… well if you hang out in groups and forums long enough, you’ll know.

And I sat on this post for months… literally months it laid in draft form.

Well when you get to the end of this post, you’ll have a pretty good understanding why I’ve hesitated to put this in an official post for the world to see.

And then you can decide if you’ll love me or hate me for it. So before we go any further, let me ask you. Do you understand toilet paper math?

You know the drill… 6 Jumbo rolls for 10 dollars, 8 jumbo rolls for 11, 12 regular rolls for 12 dollars. You’d need to bring a scale and a measuring tape to actually figure out if your getting a good deal.

It’s kinda like mattress math, or a car salesman. This deal here, this markup there, this discount if you buy this at full price, but did you get a good price?

That’s for you to decide.

What exactly are Disney Travel Agents?

These are the people that plan your vacation… for free.

or I guess I should say “free”.

And in full disclosure of this post I’ve used 3 Different Disney Planners at 2 Different Agencies over the last 12 months.

2 of them were obsessed with Disney and provided great recommendations and upsells, the other one was more of a standard travel agent, yet still helpful and accommodating when planning my vacation.

They helped or suggested things like:

🏰 Planning Fastpasses and Fastpass strategy

🏰 Restaurant Recommendations and Reservations

🏰 Purchasing Tickets for the parks and extra options

Basically, they are there to help you plan your magical vacation, which is totally a genius marketing move on Disney’s part . People always sell better one on one.

So what soured your grapes?

Well… there’s rumblings online of shadier agents, issues with them charging planning fees, canceling, or just never getting back to you.

So I went undercover… and I emailed 7 large agencies during the free dining promo that was released in January 2020.

I requested a moderate resort for 5 (2 adults, 3kids) 5 day park hopper tickets with the free dining plan.

And let me tell you what… I had exactly ONE person email me back.

Remember those magical vacations we mentioned? Yeah, they get real magical when you are staying in a deluxe resort with a park hopper pass, deluxe dining plan, early morning magic tickets and dessert parties with a few extra paid goodies in place.

After all, Disney is about profit and you can easily buy your way to a fantastic trip (Like a VIP tour will get you to all 4 parks in one day, unlimited fastpasses and a tour guide that chauffeurs you around and brings you to all the back entrances only accessible by paid guide- all for a measly 400 dollars an hour per group)

It’s at this point that most of the people in the Disney community (those bloggers and influencers you love to love) decide to either keep their mouth shut or they partner with an agency that they love to work with.

This is more of the ‘insider’ information because once you see how a site is monetized you start to better understand why they promote certain things.

Take for instance this course that teaches you how to be a travel agent . In the intro section, the writer emphasizes why it’s important to get the HIGH paying clients.

How Disney Sites and Influencers are Monetized

There’s a muddled mess of how travel agents are promoted out the yang. Combine that with nothing “bad” and no negative reviews being publically said about them online is partly to blame on the bloggers. (and I’m guilty because I don’t always love rocking the boat!)

and I’m going to put a blanket disclaimer here that I have no ill will towards these bloggers (should I say ‘my colleagues’ ?!) and this is based on the way their sites are set up because this is the kind of stuff that people will sue over in order to keep quiet .

So here’s an interesting tangled web of a way that bloggers and travel agents can work together to get leads to set up their vacation to get a commission from Disney.

The blogger recommends a travel agent on their site, gets an average 5-15% of the sale, and then the travel agent (depending on how they rank) gets 10-20%. This was as of June 2019 when I spoke with a travel agent in one of my paid blogging groups. She shared that it depends on who owns the agency and if they specialize in Disney (and have that diamond rating). For other places, like Universal or Seaworld, you can get 50% commission on the entire sale.

It’s why you’ll see that a lot of bloggers and site owners have their own travel agency . Something that some are open about… and some that aren’t.

They’ve been known to go to extreme lengths to recruit people and guests

If you’ve been in the Disney World Community- you’ve seen it. The Travel agents that hit you up in PM or email to get your number.

And can you blame them? They’re responsible for getting their leads.

So it’s actually kinda genius what the Kingdom Insiders/Academy Travel People did with this collection of sites.

And then Academy travel and mickey vacation are owned by the same person and the site recommends Kingdom Insiders. So an internet ménage à trois, I dig it.

Creating a blog has known to increase lead generation and eyeballs by 400% – this is certainly an effective way to drive traffic to the agency, It just helps build relationships when people are transparent about the whole thing.

The Bloggers and Influencers are in on it too

Natually, people are more likely to recommend things that a get a kick back from, so it comes as exactly zero surprise when influencers recommend travel agents in their content.

WDW Prep School clearly states that she owns her own agency in her about page.

Smart Moms Plan Disney also clearly states that she owns her own agency.

Undercover Tourist monetizes their sites through affiliates, so if you wonder why so many people recommend them… well either they really like them OR they get a kickback or both.

The Dis has a wonderful collection of travel agency horror stories, and then #shamelessplug mentions that they own a Travel Agency and highly recommend them. That’s the kind of honesty we need in the world.

And, he really does provide good advice for not getting scammed by some of these travel agents.

So when you google things like ‘are travel agents really a good deal’ you’ll find a lot of information skewed towards YES because people have incomes on the line.

Which leads me to…

Why travel agents are recommended

• Because they do a damn good job

Like I’ve said, I’ve worked with 3 last year, and two were veryyyy good. Insanely good. In fact, I had to cancel on one, and I felt so bad about it I sent her a gift card because I know she had to work for free.

2. because people get perks for working with travel agents

When you work with someone, you tend to feel more valued and get personalized care. For many people that only go to Disney a few times in their life, they want all the bells and whistles. So when you work with a disney agent, and they know they are getting paid well, they will do everything they can to make sure you are happy.

3. Because other people get paid

Like we saw above, travel agents and bloggers/influencers work in conjunction with one another. This benefits those that need a travel agent, and helps those bloggers/influencers who provide free information. Nothing is ever really ‘free’ so it’s reasonable that these people make money for the work that they do.

4. Because of cognitive dissonance

Much of what happens can be blamed on this fancy psychology term that basically means, people will defend their beliefs even when presented with contradictory facts, because they don’t want to change.

Even if you know it’s not ‘cheaper’ to use a travel agent, you may still choose them because you want a quality planner (and you don’t want to pay out of pocket)

It’s the same reason people finance appliances into a 30 year mortage even though it’s not a financially smart thing to do- it’s about not paying out of pocket and convenience.

5. Because they could get blacklisted

I’ll admit, I have nothing to lose besides some relationships by talking about this. I have no media pass with Disney, I have no business relationships with any travel agents, and I’m not mentioning this to any travel agents I meet- not really dinner conversation.

But many many many people do (more than you realize) and risking that by talking about how travel agents and car salesman are similar is not at the top of their list.

6. Because people deserve it

it’s 2020 and people deserve to get paid. Instead of paying a wedding planner before the big day, you can roll your payment of your travel agent into your overall costs. badabing-badaboom. Then they can plan your vacation and you don’t need a degree when it comes to Disney World.

How to pick the best travel agent

Wouldn’t that be some shit if I just ragged on all those people up there and then told you about some travel agent that I personally recommended?

I’ve read those types of articles before, the buyers intent type articles that give you the magic egg at the end that solves all your problems. I could go on and on about marketing tactics (thank you college) but I’ll stay focused.

So I don’t have any travel agencies that I personally recommend- now that I do this for a living I’m very picky about how my vacations go.

So what do you look for in a travel agent?

Number 1 is what can they offer you . If you get a planner, get one with the works. Make sure they visit Disney World regularly, have a similar family to yours (you wouldn’t want a college student planning your multi-generational family trip because they have no idea what it’s like to do Disney with Kids AND this is not stereotypical. I’m sure many childless Millenials are amazing at their jobs, but if ya know, ya know. Vacationing with kids isn’t for the faint of heart)

Ask them if they plan dining reservations and fast passes and tell them at the beginning that you aren’t interested in any upsales that won’t benefit your family (remember they work on commission) unless you genuinely are. Many of them won’t contact you back and that’s ok- you didn’t need the sales pressure.

Ask them things like:

🏰 When was the last time you went to Disney World (or cruise or land) IMPORTANT. needs to be in the last year. Things change SO fast.

🏰 Do you charge a fee for any of the above? some do- some don’t. Remember they dont work for free.

🏰 Are you an authorized Disney Travel Planner? IMPORTANT. you don’t want to get a timeshare or scammer by accident. Please verify this too.

🏰 Will you book fast passes and reservations? super helpful if your going this route.

🏰 Do you have annual passes or park hopper tickets? good to know because it can influence how much they help based on what they know.

Number 2 Reviews NOT social media followers . You can easily buy social media followers, but it’s pretty obvious if you poke around at potential candidates.

But reviews can be misleading too- because they have friends and other agents that post good reviews for them. How many people have sold a Direct Marketing product and been told to get your friends and family to like your page and leave reviews?

Yep- thought so. We all know it happens. So just look for current up to date reviews on Independent websites NOT Facebook groups or bloggers.

Why not groups? Because they have affiliate programs and anyone can pay an admin of a facebook group 100 bucks a month to get mentions and reviews . It happens all the time and it happens with these travel agents too.

Here’s the thing though- do you think that some of these very large bloggers with their own sites are going to recommend travel agents that will ruin your trip?

I would hope not!

This is their livelihood on the table. They want you to read their stuff, follow them on social, then use the agents they hand picked. It’s a very smart way of doing business.

Travel Agents are the Car Salesmen of the Disney World

Do Travel Agents save you money?

If you made it this far and you’re asking that question, here’s a refresher…

they get paid commission on how much they sell you.

But I don’t believe in blanket statements, so let me just say that it’s possible they could save you some money.

So for example, they sell you a 3000 dollar vacation and they make 250 dollars from it. Or an average of 15 dollars an hour for helping you.

The more you spend, the more they get paid. It’s the secret to why some are willing to book fastpasses and go the extra mile and some aren’t.

Generally, it’s cheaper to book it yourself because you can hunt for deals, and then avoid the sales pressure tactics for upsales- (like the Disney Dining Plan which costs more than it saves 80% of the time)

Though I had one travel agent that was really good about staying on top of the discounts. This woman was on the ball!

>But there is a true exception to the “can they save you money” rule.

If you get an agency that purchases blocks of rooms, you can generally get them cheaper than average, though they are likely around the same price of a bounceback offer or annual pass discount.

These room blocks are normally at moderate and deluxe resorts too- so comparing them to other discounts would be wise.

They could also save you money if SHTF. This is their job and a good travel agent will know how to navigate through any vacation mishaps that might happen.

Do Travel Agents offer things that you can’t get elsewhere?

Technically yes, they offer their own bonuses to get you to purchase through them. They tell you most of the offers once you start talking to them, but some places make it a priority to advertise their bonuses before you book as a reason to get a quote.

Also, you can’t rent DVC points through a travel agents, so there are things that they can’t do.

The Future of Travel Agents

Maybe you’ve noticed all the new things Disney is doing (or maybe that’s just me as a die hard fan/blogger) but they are making it easier to do things, and more digital.

The app keeps getting new additions, the booking and purchasing process is easier and more streamlined, and they roll out new blog posts, FAQs and emails everyday about how to ‘do disney’ on their site. They are relying less on influencers and more on getting people to their site.

Basically, they are trying to make this as stress-free and as easy of a process as possible (it’s why they keep raising their prices every year- so they only get the cream of the crop that will actually enjoy the trip)

They debuted a new concept at D23 called the ‘Genie’ which will basically make the need for travel agents and bloggers obsolete.

Obviously, change doesn’t happen overnight, so I don’t see this having serious implications in the next 3-5 years. But in 10 years? Travel agents probably won’t be much of a thing anymore. If you don’t believe me, believe my graduate degree in H.R.

There’s estimates that 25% of your online conversations will be with chatbots (A.I. technology) this year, and we know that having a chatbot increases sales conversions.

So this whole travel agent thing could be totally irrelevant in 15 years as there will only be a few agencies that survive the changes predicted.

This blog might not even be a thing, and honestly, I’m ok with that. You’ll just find me knocking on your window asking if I can help you plan your Disney World Vacation. (or maybe I’ll go back to snail mail… I will find you, and I will help you get to Disney)

Travel Agents Nay or Yay?

Do you need a travel agent for Disney World? no

Is a travel agent required for Disney World? that’s another big fat, nope, because you can do everything on your own, either online or through the phone. Though I don’t recommend the phone because that’s gonna take hours. #askmehowIknow

Could you use one to help you save time? Sure! Notice above that it takes hours on the phone sometimes and you can certainly save time because travel agents do this all the time. They’re literally travel pros

Should you consider one? sure, I’m not here to dissuade you from using one- there are times that they are beneficial and times that they aren’t.

Do you like doing your own thing and changing whenever you want? Do it yourself.

Travel Agent Horror Stories

This is not really the post for this, but I figured listing the most common scams will help you for if you decide to us a travel agent.

First things First, Travel Agents ‘own’ your reservation, and there’s stories of TA’s not returning calls around the 35 day mark (when you want to change) and then saying they can’t change anything at the 29 day mark (which is true because Disney cuts everyone off at 30 days)

SOOOO, you’ll find reviews online of people wanting to change reservations at the 33 day mark and the travel agents ignoring them till the 29 day mark when changes can’t be made.

You’ll also find those outlier stories, like the one of Patricia Ankerson, whose TA wouldn’t give her login access to My Disney Experience and then had the magic bands sent to the TA’s address… Buyer Beware- this is your Vacation and you can control everything about it.

And last, but not least, there are MULTIPLE reports of travel agents just going out of business (which if you think about the year you need to plan Disney Vacation doesn’t seem so crazy) So book with a company that has been in business for years.

MAIN TAKEAWAY TL;DR

Most importantly- go to Disney , or any theme park. Spend time with your family, take the trip!

Just make sure you go on your terms, your budget, and do what you want to do . If you hire a travel agent, YOU are the boss. Even with a 200 dollar deposit, you can change up to 30 days before your trip (and the 30 days is Disney’s rule, not theres)

3000 words later and I gotta know… are you a lover of Disney Travel agents? or more ‘buyer beware’?

If I book through a TA and I want to modify my reservation do I HAVE to go through them or can I call Disney myself? My main concern is the resort doesn’t have my dates available. I’ll go for the next week, no big deal. But I’m booking a year out so I want to keep a close watch to change it if more resorts open up. I contacted a TA 60 hours ago. We emailed a few times and I gave them my exact dates and resort and I’ve barely heard back. I’ve been waiting all day for a quote. I don’t want to have to wait on them to modify my trip. Your post is very insightful and makes me think I’m better off booking directly with Disney.

If you use a TA for hotel, you have to go through them to modify your reservation. If you use a TA for booking your park passes, your dining reservations, or a special day (all available in the MyDisneyApp) you do not need to go through the TA to modify them.
