dolomiten oldtimer tour

Take it out, your classic car.

Programme & tour of the ehc, the most entertaining classic car tour and rally in the dolomites.

With the Eggentaler Herbst Classic over the most beautiful mountain passes in the world and on wonderful country roads to hidden secret places in Trentino – South Tyrol and Veneto. During this classic car tour and rally in the Dolomites, wonderful panoramic views and unforgettable experiences await you – and all this during the most beautiful and peaceful season of the year in our region.

However, the Eggentaler Herbst Classic does not only want to impress with the beautiful, autumnal colourful nature. The entertainment programme also leaves little to be desired: together we celebrate over 3 days with different theme evenings at the most entertaining rally in the Alps.

Here you can find the programme for the 18th edition of the EHC 2023 including the routes. There may be further changes.

Enjoy the social get-together even before the start of the rally, meet up with old friends and get to know new faces – experience an evening together at the restaurant Tschein at Carezza (incl. shuttle service). Before dinner you have the chance to taste some specials wines by the winery Schreckbichl-Colterenzio.

The somewhat different sporting challenge at the EHC: once again, the small but fine EHC Golf Tournament will take place on tuesday at the Golf Club Petersberg. In the middle of autumnal nature, with a beautiful view and excellent distant views – have a relaxed start to the rally weekend!

Reisetag 5, Freitag, 29.09.2023 | 197km – 7.679hm

Unser Dolomiten-Day!

The traditional village of Villabassa in South Tyrol lies close to the Austrian border, surrounded by the unmistakably jagged peaks of the Dolomites. Here, spectacular scenery meets the fiercely proud Tyrolean heritage. Our home for the week, the Hotel Adler, epitomises this, housing a wonderful spa and renowned restaurant within 400-year-old walls. The walking is diverse and memorable as we venture into the Fanes-Sennes and Dolomiti di Sesto National Parks for great views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the open-air museums that dot the landscape reflect the area’s history as the frontline between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the first world war. Fascinating, imposing, unforgettable, the Dolomites are waiting. Join us to celebrate Exodus’ 50th anniversary! The departure starting in Villabassa on 5 October 2024 features extra inclusions to mark the occasion: an apple strudel cooking class and tasting with a Michelin starred chef, a local birthday celebration and a special edition Exodus kitbag. This trip includes a few of our Citizen Science Departures. These special departures offer you the opportunity to be involved in the collection of freshwater samples during the trip. The environmental DNA information derived from this sample will contribute directly to the eBioAtlas; the world’s largest repository of flora and fauna species data, contributing to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity both locally and globally. To book onto one of these special departures, see the Dates & Prices tab. For more information on these departures and the eBioAtlas, click here. Did you know you can travel by train to this trip? Start Villabassa

Start at Hotel Adler in Villabassa. The leader will give a short briefing to give an overview of the week ahead. The hotel is handily located on the village square, so any free time can be spent with a little stroll around, perhaps up past the church or down to the river. Alternatively, why not soak up the atmosphere with a relaxing drink?

Lago di Braies (Level 3 departures)

The ideal start to visiting this vast area is a walk straight from the hotel through the very pretty, flower-filled Braies Valley. We walk through small villages and farmland until we reach the magnificent Lago di Braies itself, one of the 297 glacial lakes in the area. It is certainly one of the most beautiful, surrounded by jagged peaks that are reflected in the extraordinary mirror-like surface of the water. We follow the route of SS hostages, the leaders of 19 countries who were freed after the second world war by the inhabitants of Villabassa. Distance: 8.7mi (14km); ascent: 2,133ft (650m); descent: 837ft (255m)

Kreutzberg Pass to Nemes Alm (Level 3 departures)

Today we explore high pastures and ridges along the Austrian border. We walk steadily exploring the meadows under the ridge of Knieberg. We have great views towards the Rotwand and Monte Popera. Later in the afternoon we visit Alpe Nemes hut, a great spot for a drink and a bite of homemade apple strudel. Distance: 8.7mi-9.9mi (14km-16km); ascent: 1,969ft-2,297ft (600m-700m); descent: 1,969ft-2,297ft (600m-700m)

Climb up towards Strudelkopf (Level 3 departures)

We start at 6,562ft (2,000m) altitude, walking among beautiful wildflowers and ascend to the summit of Strudlekopf (7,579ft/2,310m). We stop at the Durrenstein hut in the early afternoon to try the local Kaiserschmarrn speciality. On a clear day, from the summit, we can enjoy views of the Tre Cime, Monte Piana and Monte Cristallo. Distance: 9.3mi (15km); ascent: 1,640ft (500m); descent: 3,281ft (1,000m)

A free day to relax in the hotel wellness centre or take a self-guided cycle around this wonderful area. Alternatively, make your way to Bolzano to visit a museum dedicated to Ötzi, the 5,000-year-old 'iceman' whose remarkably well-preserved body was found in 1991 high on a glacier on the Austro-Italian frontier. Or you could journey to the attractive provincial capital of Lienz in Austria; or closer to the cosy town of Brunico.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Level 3 departures)

We enjoy a memorable walk under the Three Chimneys, or Tre Cime di Lavaredo (or Drei Zinnen in German). Set amid one of the classic mountain groups of this area, our walk around these impressive peaks is certainly a highlight of the week. Tonight the restaurant will delight your palate with an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner. Distance: 11.2mi (18km); ascent: 1,804ft (550m); descent: 3,609ft (1,100m)

Monte Piana (Level 3 departures)

To complete the week, we take the amazing eastern approach route up Monte Piana. After 1,969ft (600m) ascent we find ourselves upon the flat-topped mountain surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Dolomites. It is the site of an open-air museum dedicated to the first world war, where trenches, dugouts and shell craters can be seen among the alpine flowers. On our return, we have time to spot the brilliant blue gentians, alpine white edelweiss and bright saffron that create a beautiful scene around Lake Misurina, thanks to the beautiful pink of the limestone rock. Distance: 9.3mi (15km); ascent: 2,297ft (700m); descent: 2,625ft (800m)

End Villabassa

Enjoy your final breakfast in Hotel Adler and take the opportunity to reflect on what has been an inspirational escape in the Dolomites. After, it’s time to start your return journey home.

Customer reviews & ratings

I'll be back.

I have heard about the Dolomites for years. I wasn't prepared for how majestic they were. They are unique and a must see for any hiker.

Amazing in every way!

Great trip, hugely helped by weather in first week of October (blue skies. mid 20s with hardly any clouds!); stunning picture perfect scenery, great guides and group.

Itinerary At a Glance

Ortisei to alpe di siusi.

Ortisei is one of our favorite mountain villages in the Dolomites… a sunny walkable village in the fantastic Val Gardena. We’ll stay in a fabulous 4-star hotel in town.. After a scenic day hike around the region, you’ll then head to the Alpina Dolomites, 5-star luxury tucked in the middle of Alpe di Siusi, the largest alpine meadow in the Alps.

Alpe di Siusi to Selva

Rolling trails through flower-filled meadows cross the Alpe di Siusi, leading you to Selva, the highest village in Gardena valley. Again we stay in a beautiful 4-star hotel, with a stunning day hike up to a hut above Selva.

Selva to Alta Badia and San Vigilio

Now we hike across a high pass to the Alta Badia region, stopping in Corvara and hiking part of the alta via 1 route to San Vigilio. This is a very traditional region, with a strong Ladin culture and tons of interesting WW1 history. We finish at an exquisite 4-star superior hotel. Depart by taxi to Venice.

Your tour will be led by an experienced Alpinehikers guide, with guided hikes daily. All transfers to and from trailheads are included. You’ll stay 10 nights in 4 to 5 star luxury hotels, with all breakfasts, picnic lunches and dinners included. Luggage transfers to all stops are also part of your tour, as well as group arrival taxi from Bolzano to Ortisei and departure taxi from San Vigilio to Venice.

Full Itinerary

Arrive ortisei.

Arrive in Italy and transfer to Bolzano. Our group shuttle will meet you there and take you to Ortisei, with time to wander the village and enjoy the crisp air and dramatic views from town. Ortisei has a great, pedestrian-only town center and a laid-back atmosphere. Stay in a beautiful 4-star hotel with great food and a welcoming pool and spa.

If you have time, you might consider coming early for a night in Bolzano, your gateway to the Dolomites. Bolzano is a pleasant city with large squares, outdoor markets, and a captivating natural history museum (home of the famous Ötzi iceman). We can arrange additional nights in Bolzano to give you time to explore this small, vibrant city before heading to the mountains.

Arrival: Venice or Münich. Plan to arrive in Bolzano by 4 pm for the group meeting the day your tour starts.   Venice is about 4 hrs from Bolzano by train, and Münich is about 5½ hrs away.  It’s a good idea to arrive a day in Europe a day early so you have plenty of time for this journey.  If you are coming to Bolzano a day early, ask if you would like help with a Bolzano hotel.

Ortisei, hike to Brogles hut

One of the charms of Ortisei are the many different trail options surround the village. On your first full hiking day, you might take a dayhike through high scenic meadows to the Brogles hut, where you can look gaze upon the jagged needles of the Puez-Odle peaks.

The scenery on this hike is absolutely classic, and there are plenty of easier options if you want to take it easy. Make sure to leave time for the gorgeous pool and spa at your hotel.

HIKE: 5-7 hours, 8 miles; Elevation: 1180 ft up, 2360 ft down

Alpe di Siusi, Alpina Dolomites

You’ll start with an easy morning with plenty of time. No hurry. Start with a gondola from town up the vast meadows of the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), the largest mountain meadow in the Alps. The undulating trail across the meadows passes by a number of small mountain inns. We’ll take you to a favorite lunch spot where you can enjoy some of the best homemade local flavors in the Dolomites, including our favorite Kaiserschmarrn in South Tyrol .

After lunch, continue across the Siusi to the 5-star Hotel Alpina Dolomites. The Alpina is a delightful oasis of mountain luxury, with beautiful rooms, pool and spa. The Alpe di Siusi is a popular destination with hikers during the day, and takes on a quiet ambiance in the evening that allows you to relax and enjoy a beautiful evening high in the mountains.

HIKE: 4-6 hours, 9 miles, 1050 ft up, 1540 ft down

Alpe di Siusi, hike to Tierser hut

This is a great day to relax at the pool and spa of our fabulous 5-star hotel.  But the trails also beckon, and we love this loop hike up to Schlernhaus and Tierser hut.

Start with mellow trails across the giant rolling meadows with beautiful mountain views in all directions. Then a sturdy climb leads to the historic Schlernhaus hut, perched high on the Schlern mountain. After a short break, we traverse the high plateau toward the Rosengarten mountain group to the Tierser hut, tucked behind a steep cliff.  Another great place to stop and enjoy your surroundings.

From Tierser, a short ascent brings us over the Rosszahne pass and back across the moors and meadows of the Alpe di Siusi. Get back to the hotel in time for an afternoon visit to the pool and spa, or to relax on your balcony taking in views of the distant mountains you just traversed.

HIKE: 5-7 hours, 10 miles, 2400 ft up, 2400 ft down

hike to Selva

Today you’ll traverse the dramatic Sassolungo and Sassopiatto mountain group. One option includes a steep and somewhat rugged ascent leading directly into the heart of the mountains, surrounded on all sides by jagged peaks. You might hike all the way to a high pass, to the Toni Demetz hut, where a fun gondola brings you down to the Sella Pass where a bus takes you to Selva.

Alternately, hike along a lower circuit through green meadows with constant views of the mountains, finishing at the Ciampinoi lift, which will bring you directly to Selva. Selva is the highest village in the Gardena Valley and has a number of fine hotels and restaurants. We like the traditional elegance of the 4-star Hotel Tyrol.

HIKE: 6-8 hours, 12 miles, 3150 ft up, 2000 ft down

Selva, hike Puez-Odle park

A second day in Selva gives you a chance to further explore this beautiful region. A great hike from town leads directly up to the Seceda meadows, part of the Puez-Odle Nature Park. Seceda has a number of wonderful trails. A favorite leads to the higher reaches of the meadows to Piera Longia, a picturesque mountain restaurant at the base of the peaks.

Or for a more adventurous outing, meet up with a local guide for a via ferrata climb (guide and gear not included) on one of the local routes. Via ferrata climbs are famous throughout the Dolomites, and there are many options to choose among, from easy beginner hikes to steep, challenging routes. The local guide office can help you decide on an appropriate route, rent gear, and provide a guide. Return to Selva for a 2nd night.

HIKE: 6-8 hours, 9 miles, 3600 ft up, 3600 ft down

hike to Corvara

Leaving Selva, a dramatic hike through the U-shaped Vallunga Valley leads you to a high, rocky landscape and the Puez hut, a perfect stop for lunch and a break. Afterwards, high rocky trail lead past the the Gardena Pass and down to the Alta Badia Valley.

The Gardena Pass is also accessible from Selva by bus or cable car, and you can have an easier day today walking the many pretty trails near the pass. From here, a scenic descent or a short bus transfer brings you to Corvara. Stay luxurious 4-star hotel in this pleasant village.

HIKE: 6-8 hours, 10 miles; Elevation: 3150 ft up, 3360 ft down

Corvara, hike to Lagazuoi

Today’s dramatic walk takes you high above the valley to the rifugio Lagazuoi, a popular hut perched at the summit of a mountain with incredible views and rich history. This was the scene of fierce fighting in WWI, and many tunnels and artifacts remain to this day.

A short bus transfers brings you to the trail head, where you head up and then up into the mountains. After a strenuous hike and time to look around at the Lagazuoi hut on the peak, you can either descend by trail or cable car to the Falzarego pass.  There are frequent buses that can bring you back to your hotel in Corvara.

Alternate routes lead over the Pralongia meadows to Falzarego pass below Lagazuoi and the WW1 museum there.

HIKE: 5-7 hours, 6 miles; Elevation: 3780 ft up, 120 ft down

hike Alta via 1 to San Vigilio

Another great hike high in the mountains.  We’ll hike along the famous alta via 1 route, one of the epic long distance trails of the Dolomites.  This is one of the best stretches, hiking through the Locia pass to a high meadow surrounded by incredible peaks.  Stop at the Fanes hut for lunch and descend to Pederu, where a quick transfer brings us to San Vigilio.

We’ll stay in a beautiful 4-star hotel in San Vigilio, a luxurious hiker-friendly retreat with invigorating spas, a beautiful pool, great meals, and friendly service.  You won’t want to leave!

HIKE: 6-8 hrs, 11 miles; Elevation: 2490 ft up, 2420 ft down

San Vigilio, hike Piz da Peres

Short but steep, San Vigilio’s local mountain, Piz da Peres, is an adventurous peak ascent for views of the valley and surrounding area. Start with a bus or a taxi to the Furcia pass for this rugged loop trail.

Alternately, the climb up to Fodara Vedla and Sennes plateau is a beautiful stretch of the Alta via 1 trail and another great choice for today.

If you prefer to take it easy today, the your hotel has a beautiful spa and pool.  They have mountain bikes free for your use if you want to mix things up.  The wooded trail from San Vigilio to Pederu is nice by foot or by bike.  Return to your hotel for one final night.

HIKE: 4-6 hrs, 5 miles; 2590 ft up, 2590 ft down

Today you say arrivederci, and depart for your post-tour destinations.

Departure: Venice. A 9:00 group taxi to Venice is included in your tour, arriving at Venice airport at 12:30, or you can be dropped off Piazzale Roma if you are staying in Venice.  We can arrange a private taxi for you, at extra cost, if you need a different departure time or destination.

HotelRegina-Cortina

Located in the centre of Cortina, the family-run Hotel Regina is the ideal starting point for your adventure.

hotel-ciasa-lorenzi

At the hotel run by the Lorenzi family, enjoy a magnificent view of the Dolomites and a warm Italian welcome.

After a good sleep, take a scenic bus via Dobbiaco to Lago di Braies (1494m), a spectacular lake and the official start of the Alta Via 1. Stride out from the far end of the lake with the mountains looming high on all sides, walking through patches of dwarf pines to the head of the valley. In clear weather you may catch sight of the three giant monoliths of the Tre Cime.

Your first day on the Alta Via 1 involves a good ascent to Rifugio Biella (2327m) from where you can take an optional hike up to the summit of Croda del Becco (2812m), or continue on the mountain track down to Rifugio Sennes, located at 2126m or Rifugio Fodara Vedla at 2134m, with panoramic views over Croda Rossa (3246m), Cristallo (3221m), Sorapis (3205m), and Tofana (3243m).

Walk to Rifugio Sennes:  10km/6miles,  Ascent/Descent:  942m/299m

Walk to Rifugio Fodara Vedla:  12km/7.5mi,  Ascent/Descent:  947m/465m

RifugioSennes

Rifugio Sennes offers accommodation for up to 60 guests in dormitories and rooms with shared facilties, as well as rooms with private facilities. Enjoy the comfort of a family-run lodge with traditional food, lovingly cooked by the owners. The rifugio enjoys panoramic views over some of the most beautiful peaks in the Dolomites: Croda Rossa (3146m), Cristallo (3221m), Sorapis (3205m), and Tofana (3243m).  Managed by Erich and Cilla Palfrader, the rifugio was built by the Palfrader Family ‘Corjel’ between 1937 and 1939, and has opened year-round since the 1940s.

Rifugio Fodara Vedla

Experience the Dolomites, their magic and their rugged beauty during a stay at the Fodara Vedla mountain hut and enjoy the warm hospitality of the Mutschlechner family.

Today’s trek is along an old WWI mountain track, as you follow switchbacks on a 500m descent to Rifugio Pederü (1548m), which is ideally placed for a bite to eat. Admire views of the Sennes and Fanes massifs.

Continue across the Valle di Rudo as the trail then climbs up the Valun de Fanes to reach Rifugio Fanes (2060m), located above the town of San Vigilio di Marebbe, in a karstic limestone bowl in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Natural Park.

Walk starting from Rifugio Sennes:  10km/6mi,  Ascent/Descent:  568m/639m

Walk starting from Rifugio Fodara Vedla:  8km/5mi,  Ascent/Descent:  567m/477m

RifugioFanes

The Fanes Hut is found in Val Badia, and offers various room types, from en suite rooms through to dormitory-style accommodation with shared facilities (total of 70 beds).  The rifugio was built in 1928 by brothers Fritz, Rudi and Alfred Mutschlechner, and is now run by Alfred’s son Max, who has run it since 1978. The rifugio was completely renovated in summer 1996, and so offers a great standard of accommodation with plenty of wood and charming features.  The team at the rifugio pride themselves on offering typical Ladin cuisine, with a selection of wines, grappar and liquors also available, as well as typically South Tyrolean produce.

Rifugio Lavarella

The history of the Lavarella mountain lodge goes back to 1912, when Mariangelo Frenner of San Vigilio di Marebbe built the first mountain hut, serving as a barn. The Lavarella hut is now run by Hanspeter, his wife Michaela (the chef) and his daughter Anna and her husband Gábor. The lodge was renovated in 1980, 1986 and finally in 1997. The rooms have private washing basins since 2006 and since 2009 there is a Finnish sauna at 2.050 m above sea level with an outstanding Dolomites view for their lucky guests! The kitchen was renovated and modernised in 2013.

Continue along the AV1 passing shimmering Lago di Limo (2157m). As you climb the slopes of the Fanes group pause to admire the views to the southern mountain ranges and Marmolada. Crossing the grassy bowl of the Passo Tagéda, we suggest opting for an easier broad track past the windy slopes of Forcella del Lago (2486m), with a (manageable) steep descent on a path through scree to Lago Lagazoi (2182m).

Here in the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d’Ampezzo you’ll see remnants of the Austrian- Italian WWI front line. Stop at the open-air ‘Museo all’aparto della Grande Guerra’ with its fascinating interpretation boards. Ascend on a zig-zag path to the Rifugio which lies at 2752m.

Walk to Rifugio Lagazuoi:  12km/7.5mi,  Ascent/Descent:  1,065m/450m

Walk to Rifugio Scotoni:  10km/6mi,  Ascent/Descent:  535m/609m

Rifugiolagazuoi-1

Rifugio Lagazuoi was built in 1965 by Ugo Pompanin and has been run by his family ever since.  The rifugio offers 74 beds in total with two types of accommodation (all with shared bathroom); rooms on the first floor (some with balcony) are furnished in wood and include bed linen. There are also spacious dormitories with bunkbeds which include a mattress cover and eiderdown (bed linen is not provided – please bring your own sleeping bag liner). Dormitory accommodation is in large rooms. There is a boot drying room.

RifugioScotoni

This delightful hut is a great place to stop for some fantastic food and drink, and also to rest after a day’s walking in the Dolomites. Try the apfelstrudel with cream, which is simply delicious! Rooms are as follows (each has private facilities): 1 x 6-bed dorm, 1 x 5-bed dorm, 2 x 4-bed dorm. Bedlinen and towels are provided. Half board is a set menu. Credit cards accepted. The surroundings of the Scotoni hut were the setting for much conflict between the Italian and Austrian armies in the First World War. Make time to visit the small chapel in honour of all war victims and take the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Dolomites.

RifugioColGallina

Rifugio Col Gallina, set at the foot of Mount Lagazuoi at Passo Falzarego and easily reachable by car, is a wealth of nature, fun, and traditional hospitality. Starting point of charming hikes in the summer,  the Rifugio is just right on the Col Gallina ski slopes in winter.

If you wish to take the easiest option, there’s a cable car which operates from Lagazuoi station down to Passo Falzarego, where there’s a bus to Cortina.

Alternatively, you can enjoy a lovely walk down to civilisation. Set out across rocky slopes dotted with the remains of WWI; gun ramparts, trenches and officers’ quarters - this is a poignant place for its history and beauty. Care should be taken on the narrow pass traversing the slopes of the Tofana des Rozes, which descends to  Rifugio Dibona (2037m).

From here, continue walking to Cortina, or follow Trail 442 to the main road to catch the bus the last 6km.

Walk starting from Rifugio Lagazuoi:  13km/8mi,  Ascent/Descent:  412m/1,845m

Walk starting from Rifugio Scotoni:  10km/6mi,  Ascent/Descent:  1093m/514m

Adding a rest day at this mid-point of your trek means you can enjoy a long hot shower, with the chance to catch up on laundry and procure any bits and bobs you may need. Cortina lies in a natural amphitheatre of mountains, with plenty of opportunities for optional walks if you prefer!

From Cortina you can escape directly into the impressive mountain scenery. The path ascends through rhododendron forests as the peaks of the Cinque Torri come into view. You reach Rifugio Averau (2,413m), then it’s a 20-minute climb to the oldest Rifugio in the Dolomites— Nuvolau (2,575m), you may be staying in either Rifugio, depending on availability.

You can walk from Cortina, or to shorten the walk you can take a bus/taxi to Passo Falzarego. From Passo Falzarego you can take the cable car upto Lagazoui and then walk back down to Falzarego or go directly upto Nuvolau from Falzarego. The choice is yours today.

Walk starting from Cortina: 13km/8mi, Ascent/Descent:  1339m/16m

Walk starting from Rifugio Lagazuoi (top of the cable-car): 8km/5mi,   Ascent/Descent:  503m/685m

Walk starting from Passo Falzarego: 4.5km/3mi,   Ascent/Descent:  567m/105m

Rifugio-Averau

Rifugio Averau offers ensuite double/twin rooms in the loft area of the building, with further dormitory-style rooms with shared facilities also available (6 or 10 beds). Downstairs, Paola and Sandrone take turns at cooking, and are well known for their delicious cuisine, which you can enjoy on the rifugio’s wide terrace with its incredible view of the Civetta and the Marmolada.

RifugioNuvolau-2

Enjoying a spectacular location perched atop a rock, this rifugio was founded in 1883, making it the oldest in the Dolomites. The Siorpaes family have been running the rifugio for over 30 years, and the special atmosphere and charm more than make up for the lack of modern facilities (remember that you are atop a cliff at 2600m!).  There are outside tables where you can watch the sun set, and inside there is a cosy seating area (where dinner and breakfast is served) with an open fire, as well as a separate bar.

Two toilets (both ‘squat’ toilets) are located outside of the main building (one has cold running water). A third flushable toilet with cold running water is located inside the building (for use during the night only). No washing of clothes in the sinks is permitted. There is a phone charging point in the hall.  24 beds are in rooms of 3-8 (dormitories). Please make sure you bring your own sleeping bag liner. You will be asked to place your order for your evening meal on arrival (dinner is served at 19:00). Please note that there is no fixed half board menu at Rifugio Nuvolau you have a EUR20 per person credit towards dinner – you can choose from the a la carte menu – any extra charges above EUR20 per person are to be paid locally, direct to the rifugi.  Please also order any packed lunch for the next day at that time (payable locally). No credit card payments possible.

Paul Grohmann sings its praises in his work “Wanderungen in den Dolomiten” (Hiking in the Dolomites), written in 1877: “ … a sea of mountains lies before us, and it  would be useless to try and list them or describe them. Only the camera can fix our impressions… ”.

Start by returning to the road at Rifugio Averau, thereby avoiding the route which takes in a short section of via ferrata. Pass by the Cinque Torri, as you follow this variant of the Alta Via 1 through orchid-filled meadows and patches of shady pine trees. A series of switchbacks is rewarded by superb views over Cortina and the valley, then its a pleasant stroll to Rifugio Croda da Lago G Palmieri (2066m).

Ascent/Descent:  399m/895m

CrodaLago

This simple Rifugio is run by mountain guide Modesto Alverà, his wife Monica and their five children. Located by the tranquil Lago del Federa, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as you relax with a treat by the stove –Monica’s ricotta cake, strudel and flavoured grappas are legendary!

Keep watch for scampering salamander as you walk through patches of scree and grass to Forcella Ambrizzola (2,277m). In contrast to the high alpine slopes, the AV1 moves on across lush pastures and some scree paths to Rifugio Passo Staulanza (1,783m), at the pass of the same name. It is rumoured to serve the best hot chocolate in the Dolomites—so we suggest you indulge yourselves!

With views to Monte Pelmo (3,168m), an easier option follows a pleasant and peaceful track which then ascends to Rifugio Coldai (2,132m).

Ascent/Descent:  939m/861m

Rifugio Coldai

Rifugio Coldai has been run by the De Zordo family since 1968 and boasts stunning views over Civetta. Accommodation is in dormitories and there are two showers and toilets.

A lovely stroll around Lago Coldai up to a small pass sets the scene for today. Drop down into the valley with views of Lago di Alleghe, before climbing up towards the days’ first major pass, the Forcella di Col Rean.

The path to Rifugio Vazzoler (1,714m) brings forcella after forcella (mountain passes), in another rewarding stage of the AV1 as you skirt by the Civetta massif.

Ascent/Descent:  331m/750m

RifugioVazzoler

Photogenic Rifugio Vazzoler, with its red roof and shutters, also has an impressive alpine botanical garden. Accommodation is in dormitories. Breakfasts and dinners are simple. Showers are payable locally.

Today you’ll walk an undulating path as you first climb steeply to the next pass; Forcella del Camp (1,933m), followed by some straightforward trekking high in the Dolomites. Finally, a mountain road takes you down to Passo Duran. Both the Rifugio Passo Duna C Tome and Rifugio San Sebastiano are located here (1,605m).

Ascent/Descent:  953m/1082m

RifugioSanSebastiano

Rifugio San Sebastiano has been recently constructed in a traditional chalet-style, offering double/twin rooms (some with bunk beds) with shower and WC. It is nestled between two beautiful valleys, and along the Zoldana Agordina on road SS347. There is a small shop and a lovely café bar, as well as a wonderful fireplace where you can relax at the end of the day’s walking.  Please note that there are two rifugios at Passo Duran; San Sebastiano is the more ‘traditional looking property’ and you will walk pass Passo Duran ‘C Tome’ to get to San Sebastiano.

RifugioPassoDuran

Rifugio Passo Duran ‘C Tome’ offers a warm welcome, with rooms in dormitories as well as double/twin rooms. Please note that there are two rifugios at Passo Duran; C Tome is the first one that you will come to.

After breakfast, set out on trails that feel more remote than before, with ever-impressive alpine vistas. Today you’ll be walking via the Forcella del Moschesin (1,950m) and up the rocky western slopes of the Cima de Zita.

You are now entering the Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi, the wildest of the national parks on the trail and with a good chance of spotting deer and marmots. A vibrant orange lily flowers amongst the grass, rocks and shrubs.

In one or two places you’ll find the gradient particularly steep, and the ridge path to the day’s highest pass at 2,451m feels somewhat exposed. Enjoy glimpses of the Venetian plain. Descend sharply to Rifugio Pian de Fontana (1,632m).

This is a lengthy stage with a steep descent at the end of the walk. It is possible to split today’s walk in two by staying at Rifugio Pramperet (1,857m) if you prefer—please talk to our experts.

Ascent/Descent: 1,099m/1,031m

RifugioPiandeFontana

This is a simple but homely rifugio, with 32 beds in dormitory-style accommodation. There’s often a roaring fire which goes well with a tipple of grappa!

Albergo

The Cappello e Cadore Hotel is a popular 3* star hotel with 32 rooms which occupies a fantastic location in the heart of the historic centre of Belluno. You’ll find it nestled between the central Martiri and Piloni piazzas. Rooms have aircon, TV, electronic safe, minibar, hairdryer, and there is free WiFi in the lobby.

As you descend the twisting mountain track back into civilisation, find time to reflect on the incredible vistas, wonderful food and wine, and unique characters you’ll have met along the Alta Via 1. The final stage of your walk is via Rifugio Bianchet (1,245m), through woodland dotted with boulders and tiny cyclamen, to meet the road at La Pissa, from where you can take a bus (30 minutes) to Belluno.

Belluno is the perfect town in which to end your long distance trail. With its compact size, you will enjoy a leisurely stroll around the cafés and boutiques of the old town.

Ascent/Descent:  480m/1,672m

After breakfast, you can take a train from Belluno (via Conegliano) to Venice—just a 1h50mins journey, or continue your travels in Italy!

This trip has a carbon score of 10kg per person per night, meaning it’s one of our greenest trips! For comparison, a carbon count of 10kg is equivalent to 18 lattes. Here at Macs, we pride ourselves on being a responsible travel company and continue to adopt, develop and innovate ways to positively impact the environment. Find out more information about how we've carbon counted our trips .

Other Information

Experienced hikers will love this classic long-distance trail through the stunning high peaks of the Dolomites. You should be sure-footed and have a head for heights to really get the most from this trip. It is not suitable for people suffering from vertigo. This version of the full Alta Via 1 is extended, which means that although the hiking is still strenuous, it is broken up into shorter sections on some of the days. There is also a mid-trek rest day in the lovely town of Cortina, allowing you to catch your breath. You should be prepared to stay in remote yet charming ’Rifugi’ - these mountain huts give a great sense of camaraderie, with dormitories, and the option at times to have a private room. Great food, good company, and mouth-watering scenery, so….andiamo!

Classic Routes | If you’re the active, outdoorsy type, who’s interested in taking on the great routes of the world or looking for a challenge, then our Classic Routes are for you. We’re talking the West Highland Way, Tour Du Mont Blanc and the Passau to Vienna Danube Cycle Path, to name but a few!

Hut to Hut Walking | Walk from hut to hut, changing accommodation each night

Groups > 10

This walk is graded strenuous, due to the days where you have to carry your own pack, although grading is often subjective. It includes daily walks of between 9 and 16.5km with ascents of up to 900m, and descents of up to 1300m. You’ll be following switchback footpaths, country lanes, both narrow and wide tracks and rough mountain paths. You should be prepared for rocky and loose ground and unavoidable narrow paths across scree slopes. We have deliberately avoided routes involving Via Ferrata. Some of the ascents and descents are considerably steep and some can be exposed so require a good head for heights and sure-footedness in places. It may be possible to split some of the longer days of the itinerary, please see the detailed itinerary for more info. You should have a good level of walking fitness to get the most from this trip and be an experienced mountain walker.

We specifically select your rifugi to give you a taste of warm Italian hospitality and so that you are able to join in the camaraderie with your fellow walkers. For the first and last nights of your tour, you will stay in a friendly 3* hotel on a breakfast basis. In Refugio San Sebastiano only breakfast is included, but you can buy dinner locally at the refugio. For your remaining hut nights you will stay on a half board basis in mountain huts - ‘rifugi’. They offer comfortable accommodation and good local food and drink. Some of the rifugi are more basic than others; they are a mixture of CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and privately-run properties.

On certain days there are different suitable mountain huts - which mountain hut you are booked in will depend on availability.

Hut accommodation is booked in mixed-sex dormitories made up of alpine-style communal sleeping areas or in bunk beds. We can often book private rooms in the huts (some with shared and some with en suite) and where this type of room is available this is noted against each accommodation; this 'room upgrade' is at an optional supplement. Private rooms are popular and, therefore always subject to availability. Please note that private rooms in the mountain huts are extremely limited. If you wish to ask for a private room you need to BOOK EARLY. While we are always happy to ask, it may not be possible to reserve private rooms in the mountain huts.

Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

This trip is not available to solo walkers due to the remote terrain and single rooms are not available except on the first and last nights (in hotel accommodation). A supplement is payable.

Breakfast is included each morning. Dinner is not included in Cortina or Belluno as there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Whilst staying in the rifugi dinner is included (excluding drinks). The only rifugio where dinner is not included is the Rifugio San Sebastiano at Passo Duran - dinner can be bought off the menu and paid for locally (you may not be overnighting here). Meals in the mountain huts are always simple, hearty fare.

As this is a self guided walk you will be responsible for navigation, decision making and safety during your trip. This walk is strenuous, crosses high mountain passes and the weather can change quickly. You should be able to navigate easily with a map and compass in poor visibility and be experienced in the mountains. We supply you with route notes for the recommended routes, as well as a comprehensive guidebook and Tabacco printed maps (1:25 000) and access to our smartphone navigation app along with GPX tracks, so you will have no problem following the route each day. You are of course free to walk wherever you choose, with the possibility of following the guidebook and/or reviewing the map to make your own route.

***July is busy on the Alta Via and you maybe not be able to book certain dates as the mountain huts are full. If you cannot find the availability for your dates, we can highly recommend one of our other Dolomites tours such as the Alta Via 1 South or one of our tours in the Tyrol .

***Should there be no availability in our first choice of rifugio we will book you into the next most suitable. Some of the walking days therefore become longer or shorter. This is all clearly described on booking and in the app.

This tour is available to start any day of the week from July to September. Upgrades to private rooms will be shown as an option during the booking process. Option & extension prices will be displayed as part of the booking process. Please note that private rooms in the mountain huts are extremely limited. If you wish to ask for a private room you need to BOOK EARLY. While we are always happy to ask, it may not be possible to reserve private rooms in the mountain huts. The best time to walk is July to mid-September, with August the most popular month (with the locals too!) and so busier in the huts. It is not unheard of for snow to fall on higher ground during the summer, and patches of snow may still be present into July. For this reason, we offer the walk starting from the beginning of July. July and August are the hottest months and carry the greatest risk of thunderstorms, which can be torrential and usually occur in the afternoon - being well-prepared and equipped for all these eventualities is essential.

By Air: Venice Marco Polo Airport is the most convenient airport, with various interational airlines operating here. The smaller Venice Treviso Airport is serviced by low-cost carrier Ryanair (London Stansted, Bristol, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford).

Private Transfers:  We are able to arrange taxi transfers for you in Italy (bookable in advance at a supplement) from Venice Airports. Please get in touch to enquire about how we can help with transfer arrangements in Italy.

From Venice Marco Polo airport (or Venice Mestre bus station): it is possible to take the Cortina Express to Cortina (approx. 2h20); departures are twice-daily, usually in the afternoon, so please ensure you check their website for timetables .

From Venice Treviso Airport: From the airport take a bus (approx.12 mins) to Treviso, then from Treviso Sud there is an ATVO bus once a day to Cortina (approx. 2 hrs). Or you can take a bus from Treviso town to Venice Mestre or Marco Polo Airport for onward connections with the Cortina Express (see above). Check the timetable on the ATVO website .

From Belluno you can take a train (changing at Conegliano) to Venice Santa Lucia station (approx. 2h30); see   www.trenitalia.com   for timetables. From here, take a bus from Venice Mestre to   Venice Marco Polo Airport   (35 mins). See   timetable .

To return to Cortina from Belluno:   Dolomiti Bus Lines 9 and 30 run between Belluno and Cortina, if you need to return there to collect any additional luggage (we can request if luggage be left at your first hotel in Cortina—subject to prior agreement). Journey time takes just over 1 hr. For timetables, see   www.dolomitibus.it/dolomitibus/jsp/orari

Bag transfer is included from Cortina to Belluno, allowing you to hike only with the equipment you require and you will  be reunited with your main bag at the end of the hike.

As an optional extra, you can choose to have your bags delivered to some of the huts. However, due to some of the huts' remoteness, it is impossible to transfer bags to each overnight location. If you opt for bag transfer, bags cannot be delivered to Rifugio Fanes, Rifugio Sennes/Lavarella, Rifugio Averau/Nuvolau, Rifugio Coldai, Rifugio Vazzoler and Rifugio Fontana. On these days, simply carry a few overnight things in your day pack to see you through. If you choose not to opt for baggage transfer, you will need to carry your kit with you each day. Since you are staying in dormitory-style accommodation, you will need to bring a sleeping bag liner (or you can sometimes buy or hire one locally). Bed linen is provided when booking private rooms.

At Macs Adventure we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase.

For the optional baggage transfers on the Alta Via the handlers are very strict with weight limits. You are only allowed to take one small bag (duffel style) weighing a max of 10kg (22lbs) per person. There is no space in the rifugios for more baggage.

Regardless if you are opting for the baggage transfers within the holiday one main bag of a max of 20kg will be transferred from Cortina to Belluno.   We do not have control over the limits that these providers set. Therefore, it is very important that you adhere to these limits, as there is a great possibility that they will not take any additional or heavier bags. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits we must respect.

We suggest that you book as soon as your plans are finalized as its a popular trip with a short season and accommodation is limited (particularly private rooms). However, we will always try to accommodate your plans.

Baggage transfer is not included. However on a few nights you can add baggage transfers (at an additional charge) to your tour. Please contact the Macs team to ask which nights it is possible on your tour.

Due to the remoteness of the huts it is not usually possible to take any form of transport between them. The staff at the rifugi will be able to advise you of your best options.

This trip is graded moderate to strenuous and requires good physical condition. You must be used to mountain walking, crossing scree or snowy patches, and challenging ascents and descents to get the most from this trip.

The best time to walk is July to mid-September, with August the most popular month (with the locals too!) and so busier in the huts. It is not unheard-of for snow to fall on higher ground during the summer, and patches of snow may still be present into July. For this reason, we offer the walk starting from beginning of July. July and August are the hottest months and carry the greatest risk of thunderstorms, which can be torrential and usually occur in the afternoon—being well-prepared and equipped for all these eventualities is essential.

Our pre-departure information pack has detailed advice and a kit list on what to take. This includes standard walking gear such as waterproofs, good walking shoes/boots, sun protection, water bottle and a comfortable backpack with waist strap.

The classic dolomites tour

6 nights/7 days, from €3490,00 p.p., all skill levels, adaptable to all fitness levels, 5 persons max., all year round, workshop itinerary.

– Digital Camera (preferably a DSLR or mirrorless camera, APS-C, micro 4/3 and FF will be more than fine); – An ultrawide lens (e.g. Nikon 14-24mm, Canon 16-35mm, Tamron 15-30mm, Tokina 16-28mm etc); we recommend a lens with a wide maximum aperture (like f/2.8) in case we might do some night photography.

– A standard zoom lens (e.g. Nikon/Canon/Sigma 24-70mm or 24-105mm);

– A telephoto zoom lens (e.g. various Nikon/Canon/Tamron/Sigma 70-200mm);

– A super telephoto zoom lens (e.g. Sigma/Tamron 150-600mm); this lens is not necessary but we recommend it anyway since it allows to capture the far away details of the landscapes;

– A sturdy tripod that permits to do some long exposure photos, specially at twilight;

– A set of ND filters; these are the only filters we feel to recommend, since they become useful when you need to stretch the exposure time a little bit during some difficult light conditions;

– A camera remote to avoid blurry shots.
