2024 Easter Jeep Safari: Four New Concepts, Each with a Different Purpose and Palette

Jeep returns to Moab with a quartet of Wrangler, Gladiator, and Grand Wagoneer–based concepts that go high, low, and retro.

Jeep Vacationeer Concept

jeep concept

We knew the creatives at Jeep couldn't keep their hands off the new Wagoneer for long, and the Vacationeer is here to prove us right. And no, that's not a typo; the "ee" is a not-so-subtle nod to the Wagoneer it's based on. As long as we're pointing out the obvious, it would be pointless to pay homage to the Wagoneers of yore without at least a touch of woodgrain, and the Vacationeer wears it in the thin-strip style of select Jeep models from the late 20th century, including the low-volume Wagoneer Brougham of the early 1980s.

The custom exterior paint, dubbed Spearminted, is similar to the hue of the paint on the Willys Dispatcher Concept also found on this list, but it ramps up the spent nuclear fuel rod effect to Simpsons levels of iridescence. Larger wheel openings and custom body-side flare extensions shroud 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires mounted to 18 x 9.0-inch 701 Method racing wheels. The tire and wheel package provide a 1.5-inch lift while front and rear skid plates help to deflect obstacles, and a front-mounted Warn winch and a trio of 11-inch TYRI LED lights provide peace of mind. Jeep's 510-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six "Hurricane" engine provides the power to keep the vacation rolling.

jeep concept

The Overlanding vibe is strong thanks to the custom carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft affixed to the roof. Featuring climate control, room for two, and panoramic viewing capabilities, it seems like the ideal place to spend a night in the boonies, or even your driveway. To make climbing up and in via the weatherproof pass-through easier, Jeep removed the second- and third-row seating and mounted a small step that doubles as a table.

The rear area features a bed liner to stow gear. Distinguished fashion designer and Wagoneer enthusiast/owner Kiel James Patrick was tapped for the front upholstery, coming up with a design featuring classic Jeep vehicles dotting a distinctive and charming New England–inspired pattern. (Attn. Jeep: You know you could sell this fabric for real, right?)

Jeep Wrangler Low Down Concept

a red jeep on a dirt road

Longtime fans will likely remember the Jeep Lower 40 concept the brand dropped back in 2009 at the 43rd annual Easter Jeep Safari. This year's Jeep Low Down concept exists as an update of sorts, following the theme of fitting the biggest tires possible without altering the suspension or lifting the ride height.

The formula involves some clever cleaver work to make room for ginormous BFGoodrich Krawler 42 x 14.5 R-20 mud-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch beadlock wheels. Custom carbon-fiber fender flares help facilitate the project. Otherwise, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension remains untouched, but Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears are brought in to replace the standard Rubicon Dana 44s. The result is a low center of gravity teamed with increased ground clearance, breakover, and approach and departure angles.

The exterior is finished in Poison Apple Red paint, and the hood is a custom carbon-fiber unit with a see-through power dome. The profile gets a bit of streamlining with the removal of the exterior door handles, and a race-style fuel filler resides in the driver's-side rear quarter.

Interior tweaks include a Rhino-lined floor, black leather seats with cloth inserts, and a radio delete instrument panel. "Listening to the engine is enough, in the Low Down," says Chris Piscitelli, design manager for Dodge/SRT, who had a hand in creating this year's concepts. A custom red-tinted semi-transparent bikini top makes sure any light that passes through glows with a red hue.

Like its Lower 40 inspiration, the Jeep Low Down relies on a V-8 engine, in this case a modern 475-hp 6.4-liter 392 (you saw the numerous callouts, right?) and an eight-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Lower 40 made do with just a 390-hp 5.7-liter Hemi.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

jeep concept

Born from the efforts of Jeep Performance Parts designers and the Mopar engineering teams, the Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept channels the '70s J-series pickups, particularly the highly decorated versions from the mid-'70s when Jeep tried to get hip. (Remember the Jeep J-10 Honcho ?)

Brown was the official color of the 1970s, so Jeep starts off with a two-tone Ginger Snap metallic exterior with bold graphics that look the part. Interior mods are subtle but appropriate. The seats have been trimmed with custom quilted and perforated tan and black Alea leather, and JPP logos reside on the headrests. JPP provides the sun bonnet, pedal kit, floor mats, and doorsill guards. JPP also provided some concept flat fender flares.

jeep concept

Mods from outside vendors include a front bumper from American Expedition Vehicles—check the custom protective hoop sitting just above a Warn winch—rock rail power steps from Rock Slide Engineering, and a truck bed storage system with lockable dual sliding drawers from Decked.

Power comes from the trusty 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Torque is funneled to Dana 60 front and rear axles with matching 5.38:1 gears, then moves on to 40 x 13.5 R-18 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires mounted on 18 x 9.0-inch Satin Black KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. An AccuAir adjustable suspension helps fine-tune the suspension for the task at hand.

Willys Dispatcher Concept

jeep concept

Aside from the paint, the Willys Dispatcher doesn't look much different from the current Wrangler. And although there's a lot more going on here than just its Element 115 green paint, we'd be fine if there wasn't. As designer Chris Piscitelli not so coyly mentioned in brief preview, more than one current Jeep color first debuted on concept vehicles like this. A gloss-black windshield surround almost disappears—along with the standard black roll cage—due to the high contrast with the nuclear-age-inspired green paint.

Exterior color aside, the Willys Dispatcher, which counts the postwar-era Willys Jeeps as its inspiration, has some pretty cool features, including front and rear Dana 50 axles with 4:70 gears and 36-inch Traxion tires mounted on 16 x 7.0-inch white steel wheels for the perfect vintage look. The bumpers are crafted to look homemade old-school, the front with a beefy Warn 8274 winch mounted. The flat fenders and "Willys" stamped lettering in the hood really play into the retro vibe.

jeep concept

Inside, distressed saddle leather mixes with houndstooth cloth inserts; combined with the low back seats—sans headrests—the midcentury vibe is palpable. The vinyl flooring is from Jeep Performance Products, as are the bikini top and the onboard air compressor.

For all the looking back, the powertrain is undeniably modern, the Willys Dispatcher using Jeep's 2.0-liter plug-in-hybrid 4xe propulsion system that delivers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic. It's a blend of old and new that successfully transcends time.

The Red Rock 4-Wheelers are pleased to host the 58th Annual Easter Jeep Safari this coming March. Dates for the 58th Easter Jeep Safari are March 23 thru March 31, 2024 . EJS 2024 like all previous events does require registration prior to the event. For Red Rock 4-Wheeler Members registration for the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari begins at 10:00AM Mountain Standard Time on January 18, 2024. For all other attendees registration begins on January 23, 2024 at 10:00AM MST. (Members, be sure your dues are up to date prior to January 10, 2024 as the membership renewal system will be closed between January 11th to January 25th, 2024 for the EJS 2024 registration process.) In preparation for EJS 2024 or other upcoming events, you will need to create a profile on the Red Rock 4-Wheelers website and add your vehicle to your profile before you will be able to register for an event & trails. Please keep your license number, vehicle descriptions as well as your personal information up to date as time passes. This allows us to keep you up-to-date with news and information as well as deliver to you a copy of the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari Magazine. You can PreRegister your profile and vehicle here , however this DOES NOT register you for an event. To register for an event, make note of the registration opening dates above and register at that time through the Events tab at RR4W.com . I will be assisting fellow four wheelers on 3 trails(at least) and enjoying a 4th as a participant. I hope to see some of you on the trail!

easter jeep safari 2024

How many trails have been closed with the recent rulings?

317 miles, but the trails used by EJS are open. The closures mostly affect trails we as locals liked to get out on. SUWA and the Grand County council went after the the low hanging fruit, but left the EJS stuff alone ...for now...but give them time.

That really sucks. When I was going to Moab regularly, I went on many of those trails. I avoid EJS. Prefer no crowds and no waiting. I hope it’s good for everyone!

easter jeep safari 2024

Well, we did lose 2 EJS trails: Day Canyon Point and Hey Joe Canyon. We're also not running Top of the World due to its condition. Two trails have been added: Tommy Knocker and Lost World.

Moabyte is correct, we did lose two and then gained 2. I stand corrected. Registration for members is only 11 days away, non-members can register in 16 days!

Just a reminder for those thinking about wheelin' in Utah this spring, 2024 Easter Jeep Safari registration begins on January 23, 2024 at 10:00AM MST for non-members! Set a reminder for tomorrow to get signed up for a great time off-roading in some of the greatest scenery on earth.

easter jeep safari 2024

I'll be going in a few weeks!

Excellent! If you happen to be here April 20th, you're welcome to join us on the rr4w Trail of the Month . In April I'm leading a variation of the Behind the Rocks Tip-Toe.

easter jeep safari 2024

On behalf of the Red Rock 4-Wheelers I would like to thank all those who participated in another successful Easter Jeep Safari! Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. A few guests left some paint chips or powder coating along the way, while a few folks decided axles, driveshafts, u-joints, window glass or other vehicle parts were a better sacrifice to the Off-Road Gods! The only injuries were to a few egos, and those are just slightly bruised, nothing another year on the trail won't heal. Old friendships were renewed and new friends made. For those who haven't made it to at least one Annual Jeep Safari it truly is an item to get on and check off your bucket list. Once again, every member of the club says "Thank you!" to this years participants and volunteers. The 59th Easter Jeep Safari will take place the week before Easter next year, starting on April 12th and concluding April 20th of 2025 .

Here Are Jeep’s Awesome 2024 Easter Safari Builds From Every Angle

Jeep has created four amazing new concepts for its easter safari drive this year, including a rad camping rig built around a jeep grand wagoneer..

A photo of the four Easter Jeep Safari trucks parked up.

It’s that time of year again people, it’s Easter. And sure, that might mean it’s the season for eating too much chocolate or celebrating the anniversary of someone’s resurrection (weirdly on a different day each year) but for us here in the world of cars, it means it’s time to look at a bunch of awesome Jeep concepts.

That’s because the off-road brand is preparing to host its annual Easter Jeep Safari . Jeep will head to the desert and bring with it all manner of modified metal. This year, its special builds do not disappoint.

For the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep put together four special trucks  built around its Wrangler , Gladiator and Grand Wagoneer models. Each car is fitted with the kind of off-road upgrades you and I can only dream of, as well as all kinds of massive wheels, rugged trim and some seriously awesome color choices.

To celebrate their unveiling, we’ve put together a bunch of the best pictures of the new Jeeps that we could find. So pull up a camp chair, don your desert boots and sit back to enjoy the best the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari has to offer.

The Low Down

A photo of the front quarter of the Low Down concept.

First up it’s the Low Down concept, which is built on Jeep’s mighty Wrangler Rubicon 392. The car was designed in homage to the Jeep Wrangler Lower 40 from 2009’s Easter Jeep Safari. As such, it packs an awesome paint scheme, massive wheels and no roof, just like its inspiration.

The One With The V8

A photo of the engine bay of the Low Down concept.

Because this is a Wrangler 392 , there’s a stock 6.4-liter V8 motor under hood. The engine kicks out 475-horsepower and is mated to an eight-speed automatic. To show off its beating heart, Jeep’s engineers fitted the hood with a see-through section that reveals that massive engine in all its glory.

Get It In The Good Color

A photo of the side view of the Low Down concept.

For the finish on the Low Down, Jeep opted for a lush poison apple red paint that pops nicely compared to the black grille and roof rails. To streamline the look of the truck, Jeep opted to remove the rear door handles, because who needs those anyway, and fitted a bespoke fuel filler door on the rear quarter.

Looks Wheelie Big

A photo of the rear quarter of the Low Down concept.

Because it’s a Jeep Safari build, the truck is finished off with a set of massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires , which are fitted to a 20-inch bead-lock wheel at each corner. Under the car, Jeep has left the Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension as stock, but it also fitted Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears.

Willys Dispatcher

A photo of the front of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

Next is the Willys Dispatcher build, which is based on Jeep’s Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The build is said to invoke “...the nostalgia of the early post-war civilian Jeep,” according to the brand. As such, it unites an awesome paint scheme and the rugged looks of the Wrangler with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that churns out 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Best Wheels Of The Bunch

A photo of the front quarter of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

The biggest changes on this build are in the looks department, with Jeep finishing the truck in that lovely element 115 green paint. At each corner, there’s a 16-inch steely wheel painted cream. They really pop against the Traxion 36-inch tires and teal body. To finish the retro-stylings, there’s a classic-looking Warn winch up front.

Look At That Interior

A photo of the interior of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

Inside the Dispatcher is a lovely trim that reminds me of my grandparents living room, in a really, really good way. But what does that look like to anyone that’s not been in their house in rural Yorkshire? Well, it’s full of tan saddle leather and a neat houndstooth pattern across the seats and dash. I dig it.

A top down photo of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

Other flourishes on the Dispatcher include a vinyl covering to protect the floor from any water that could come in through the open roof, and there’s an onboard air compressor to manage your tire pressures on the trail. To keep you moving when the going gets tough, the truck also has Dana 50 Advantech front and rear axles with 4.70 gears.

The High Top

A photo of the front of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

If you absolutely must have a pickup truck, I guess the new High Top build isn’t a bad way to go. Built around Jeep’s Gladiator Rubicon , the High Top concept packs in massive 40-inch off-road tires from BFGoodrich at each corner, wrapped around a set of black Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels.

How It All Works

A photo of the underside of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

Under the hood, the truck is powered by Jeep’s 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 engine, which has been paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. To get all that oomph onto the trail, Jeep gave the Gladiator High Top Dana 60 front and rear axles with 5.38:1 gearing and adjustable air suspension.

Pickup, Pickup

A photo of the side of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

Because this is a pickup , there’s a whole bed out back to fill with your hopes and dreams. To maximize its useability, Jeep gave the High Top truck the latest Decked truck bed storage system, which offers additional lockable cargo space just like you get from a trunk. Imagine that.

Winching At My Heartstrings

A photo of the front of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

Up front, the bumper of the Gladiator has been modified to include a custom protective hoop from American Expedition Vehicles. This sits above a Warn winch, and the High Top packs in rock rail power steps from Rock Slide Engineering to protect its underside.

Grand Vacationeer

A photo of the front quarter of the Grand Vacationeer concept build.

You know what’s cooler than a ginger-colored pickup truck? A minty green Grand Wagoneer that can take you almost anywhere. This is the Jeep Vacationeer and it’s excellent. Fitted out with 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires, 18-inch rims and a 1.5-inch lift, this is everything the Wagonner was born to be.

Not Enough Room To Camp In The Trunk

A photo of the side of the Grand Vacationeer concept with its tent popped up.

Inside, Jeep has ripped out the second and third rows of seats in the Wagoneer in order to install a pass-through entrance to the custom tent that’s fitted up top. The custom carbon fiber tent comes from outdoor experts Skyloft and offers climate-controlled sleeping space for two and all the windows you need to enjoy your surroundings. Is this the ultimate definition of “glamping?”

Never Forget Your Car Cacti

A photo of the interior of the Grand Vacationeer concept build.

As well as skid plates to protect the underside and custom flared wheel arches, Jeep has also fitted the Vacationeer with a pretty stunning interior. There’s tons of earth tones and soft finishes, and the rear space has been lined with weather-proof materials to ensure the back of the Wagoneer can handle all the outdoor activities you throw at it.

Which Would You Have?

A photo of the four Jeep concept cars driving at sunset.

So, that’s the lineup of awesome custom Jeeps that Stellantis will take to its annual Easter Jeep Safari this year. If you could drive away today in one of them, which would you choose? My heart tells me the Low Down is the best of the bunch, but deep down I really want the overlanding Wagoneer.

Jeep's Easter Safari Builds Go All Retro For 2024

W ith the 58th annual Easter Jeep Safari well underway in Moab, Utah, Stellantis has pulled the cover off of four brand-new off-road concepts. The lineup includes two highly-modified Wranglers, a big-tired Gladiator pickup, and a seriously retro take on the Grand Wagoneer , all of which take a look back at some of the Jeep’s greatest work for inspiration. Here’s what you need to know about these factory-modified wheelers.

Wrangler Low Down Concept

Jeep has built more than 100 of these custom 4x4s since 2008, but only a select few have managed to stick in the minds of the Jeep faithful. The new Rubicon 392 -based Wrangler Low Down concept pays homage to one of the most famous Easter Jeep Safari builds, the Lower 40 concept from 2009. That early build featured a V-8 engine swap under the hood, and made use of gigantic 40-inch rubber despite a stock ride height. The new truck is a bit more extreme, trading that old-school 5.7-liter V-8 for the potent 6.4-liter engine provided by the Rubicon 392. The new build also retains the stock suspension package from the Rubicon 392 model, but swaps out the stock Dana 44 axle for more robust Dana 60s with 5.38 gears. Those beefier axles help support the truck’s massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires, which come installed on a set of 20-inch beadlock wheels. The stock fenders have been replaced with a set of flared carbon units, which help give the truck a purposeful stance. A Poison Apple Red paint job and a red-tinted bikini top are a nice nod to the original concept as well.

Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept

The second Wrangler build looks even further back in brand history, paying respects to the early civilian model Jeep from the post-war era . Based on the 4xe hybrid model, this Willys Dispatcher Concept gets some old-school appearance tweaks, including custom steel bumpers at both ends. The hood also features stamped “Willys” branding, which it shares with the original seven-barred product. Upgraded Dana 50 axles with 4.70 gears help increase capability, as do the Super Traxion 36-inch tires. That rubber comes wrapped around retro-style steel wheels, which are finished in a cream hue. The SUV itself is finished in a bespoke shade of Element 115 Green paint, which is accented nicely by the blacked out windshield banner. The best looking part of this custom SUV is the interior, complete with distressed saddle leather and houndstooth inserts throughout. The headrests have been pulled from the seats to improve that retro appearance. It’s the sort of thing we’d love to see make its way to the production models, however unlikely. The throwback style Warn Winch is another nice touch and helps to round out the package.

Gladiator High Top Concept

The Gladiator High Top Concept is a bit less of an involved build, borrowing mostly from the Jeep Performance Parts catalog. Upgrades include items like an AccuAir air suspension system, which work with Dana 60 axles at both ends to support 4x4 endeavors. The suspension system is put to the ground via a gigantic set of 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s, which come wrapped around a set of 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. A set of flat fender flares and AEV bumpers ensure that the large rubber is covered and ready for road-use, while giving the pickup some additional flair. Out back you’ll find a truck bed storage system by Decked, which brings a bit of overlanding capability to the build. A Warn Winch and some rock slider steps have also been added should any off-roading adventures take a turn for the worse.

Vacationeer Concept

Rounding out the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari lineup is the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer Concept. The design is a clear nod to the original Wagoneer models, complete with the oh-so lovely wood grain graphics missing from the current production model. The woody look pairs very nicely with the Spearmint paint, which has slightly more white in the mix than the aforementioned Element 115 color. The wheel openings have also been massaged to make room for the larger 35-inch tires, which come wrapped around 18-inch Method Race wheels. A 1.5-inch suspension lift adds a bit of aggression to the stance, while bringing a bit more off-road capability to the table. The rear rows of seats have been removed in favor of a carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft, which serves as a passthrough rooftop tent for ideal camping conditions. Under the hood sits a high output variant of the Hurricane inline-six engine, which provides 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. That said, the real highlight of this build is found on the interior, where Jeep enlisted the assistance of fashion designer Kiel James Patrick. The custom flannel seats feature famous Jeep models from years gone by, and fit with the theme perfectly. This is exactly how the Grand Wagoneer should have looked in production form, but we’ll settle for a concept like this one.

The Easter Jeep Safari runs through March 31st, 2024 in Moab, Utah. If you’re a diehard Jeeper, it might be worth the trek to lay eyes on these unique concept vehicles.

It's hard not to look back with over eight decades of off-roading history on the books.

Jeep reveals 2024 Easter Safari concepts

We get two wranglers, a gladiator and a wagoneer this year.

easter jeep safari 2024

There may be snow on the ground in many parts of the country as I write this, but spring is in the air even way up here in the once-frigid expanse of Michigan, and with it comes Jeep's annual celebration in Moab, Utah — the Easter Jeep Safari . And as is tradition, Jeep has a handful of concept builds to show off to this year's Safari-goers. While we won't be seeing anything along the lines of the now-retired Jeep Magneto or 392 Scrambler , it's still Easter Jeep Safari; there's always something cool.

Blame the UAW strike, retirements in Jeep leadership ( former design chief Mark Allen departed in May of last year) or what have you, but 2024 is a bit of a lean year. Jeep is bringing just two ground-up concept builds and two Jeep Performance Parts accessorized models to the 2024 edition of Easter Jeep Safari. There are no wild vintage riffs or rebodies this year, but that's just as well. We can file these in the "attainable" category for once. Let's dive in.

2024 Jeep Low Down Concept

Jeep Low Down

The Low Down Concept celebrates the V8. It was short-lived in the Wrangler but the 392 also made a splash in the Grand Cherokee SRT8. It may not be a "Jeep engine" in the strictest sense, but it's certainly one that Jeep fandom has embraced in recent years. The Low Down gets its name from an older Easter Jeep Safari Concept: the Lower Forty . Both are designed around their V8 engines (the Lower Forty had a 5.7-liter Hemi) and were customized so that the engines could be fitted without having to lift their bodies for extra clearance. This one rocks a standard 392 with 475 horsepower and a stock-height suspension but beefed-up Dana 60 axles and a set of 5.38 gears. That color is called Poison Apple Red, by the way.

2024 Jeep Willys Dispatcher Concept

Jeep Willys Dispatcher

With the retirement of the badass 6-speed electric Magneto , this 4xe-based Willys Dispatcher is by default the most forward-thinking concept Jeep has at the Safari this year. Embracing a sense of juxtaposition, Jeep's designers used this concept as the foundation for a throwback build featuring 36-inch tires on eggshell-colored steelies highlighted (literally) by a bright green finish. Inside, there's distressed leather with houndstooth inserts and no headrests to be found. Vintage. Or like on TV. Take your pick.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top

This one's my personal favorite. Maybe it's the sweet two-tone finish or the big, fat sidewalls, but this pickup-based build speaks to me. Those thick shoes are 40-inch BFG KO3s on 18x9-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. Never would have imagined I'd see a street Jeep tire that would make an 18-inch wheel look tiny, but here we are.

Like the Vacationeer below, the High Top is decked out in Jeep Performance Parts goodies, including flat fender flares, Dana 60 front and rear axles, an AccuAir adjustable air suspension ( We got to sample one last year! ) and an entire pile of visual and go-anywhere bolt-ons from JPP and their partners at American Expedition Vehicles et al. This one's just based on the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, but that's OK. I'll take it as it sits.

2024 Jeep Vacationeer Concept

Jeep Vacationeer

No, not vacationer, but Vacation eer . This spearmint-wrapped Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back is... well, OK, it's a Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back. In fact, maybe it's just me, but the Vacationeer looks an awful lot like the Camp Lux Grand Wagoneer from a year ago, which was also a Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back. But it can't be, right? I mean, it's green and the wheels are different... Can you rattle-can a roof tent chassis? Asking for a friend.

easter jeep safari 2024

That's it for the 2024 round of Easter Jeep Safari Concepts. As I said above, it's a lean year in Moab, but 2024 is going to be a big one for Jeep. Why? One word: Recon . Stay tuned.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari Concept Vehicles: Retro Willys Dispatcher, Overlanding Wagoneer & More

Every year, we wait like giddy school children in anticipation of the annual Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles. It’s a magical time, when the Jeep engineering teams develop a caravan of wild, groundbreaking concepts—some are throwbacks, some are futuristic—but they are all equally delightful.

And lo and behold, the 2024 lineup of EJS concepts carries on that tradition, so let’s take a closer look at them.

Jeep Low Down

2024 Jeep® Low Down Concept for easter jeep safari

Either the Jeep folks are big Boz Scaggs fans ( who isn’t, right? ), or the name Low Down refers to the stock ride height on this particular concept. Yup, Jeep engineers were able to stuff massive 42 inch BFGoodrich tires under a Wrangler—without the need for a suspension lift.

transparent hood and engine bay of jeep low down concept 2024

The end result is a Jeep Wrangler that almost looks like it’s squatting down on the trail, giving the rig plenty of stability while offering significantly improved ground clearance, and breakover and departure angles.

The Low Down is powered by a 392 Hemi V8 sending oomph to a pair of Dana 60 axles—to quote the aforementioned Scaggs, “[this] baby’s into running around.”

Jeep High Top

2024 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon High Top easter jeep Concept

In contrast to the Low Down, the 2024 High Top concept gets pumped up with an AccuAir Air Suspension . Based on a JT Gladiator Rubicon, the truck features a handy DECKED truck bed storage system out back too. High Top rolls on a set of 18 inch KMC Beadlock Wheels wrapped in 40 inch BFG rubber.

Our favorite part? That paint job—a shade that Jeep calls Ginger Snap metallic. *Chef’s Kiss*

Jeep Vacationeer

2024 Jeep® Vacationeer Concept with rooftop shelter deployed

With its rooftop shelter deployed, it’s easy to see why this one got the name “Vactioneer.”

The Wagoneer-derived overlanding rig features a RedTail Overland Skyloft covered in solar panels. Look closer and you’ll see a winch tucked behind the bumper, along with a set of nifty Method Race Wheels .

2024 Jeep® Vacationeer Concept front

It’s riding on a 1.5 inch lift and has some subtle fender flares molded into the body. And yeah, the Vacationeer is packing that new twin-turbo Hurricane six under the hood.

Jeep Willys Dispatcher

2024 Jeep® Willys Dispatcher Concept

OK, shut up and take our money, Jeep.

For starters, white painted steelies look good on eeeeeverything. Toss in a vintage Warn Winch and an embossed WILLYS on the hood, and the Dispatcher is our favorite out of the 2024 crop of Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles.

2024 Jeep® Willys Dispatcher Concept rear

The name itself hearkens back to the two-wheel drive DJs—which you may know better as Mail Jeeps —but this Dispatcher is powered by the familiar 4xe plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Fancy hybrid tech is a wickedly retro wrapper. Obligatory.

The annual Jeep pilgrimage to Moab, Utah, is currently underway, as the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari marks the 58 th year of the event. Taking place from March 23 to 31, the annual gathering is an opportunity not only for Jeep enthusiasts to commune but also for Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) to show off some cool concepts and parts.

This year, Jeep puts forward four concepts, utilizing Wrangler, Gladiator and Wagoneer vehicles to have a little fun. From camping cruisers to go-anywhere crawlers, here’s a look at the interesting concepts at this year’s event.

Will any of the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari concepts be produced?

Though we have seen previous concepts, like the 392 , make it into production post Easter Jeep Safari, we don’t see anything here that has a high likelihood of going from concept directly to production. However, these concepts showcase unique paint and JPP parts that we could see showing up in special editions or future trims.

The bottom line

We always love seeing the concepts that pop up during Jeep’s annual pilgrimage. We are surprised we didn’t see any straight electric concepts this year, and since we know the V-8 is leaving the Wrangler lineup after this year, the Low Down concept is definitely a long shot.

Our fave is the retro Willys Dispatcher concept. How about you?

2025 infiniti qx80 24 display helps prevent distracted driving

Most road incidents are attributed to unsafe driving. And while speeding and drunk driving immediately come to mind as the main culprits, distracted driving is far more of a concern than one might expect. In fact, the simple act of distraction while driving claimed 3,308 lives and caused around 289,310 injuries in 2022 alone. Ending distracted driving requires proper driving behavior and the spreading accurate information. That’s why this April is “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” in the United States. In this blog, we will look at the most common forms of distracted driving, and talk about a few tips to keep you attentive and safe on the road. Types of distracted driving Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from the primary task of driving. Some of these actions are considered “normal” driving routines or behavior by most, and include things like texting, talking on the phone, eating, talking to passengers, and adjusting temperature or radio levels. The three types of driver distraction include: Manual: When you remove your hand from the wheel or slide your foot off the brake Visual: When you take your eyes off the road Cognitive: When your thoughts wander from the task of driving Tips to avoid distracted driving Ignore your phone Smartphones have become an indispensable accessory in modern life. But when using a phone to speak or text, we shift our thoughts, and sometimes our eyes and hands, away from the task at hand. While this is okay in certain circumstances like sitting on the sofa, it is extremely dangerous when on the road. Switch your phone off or put it on “do not disturb” before you enter your vehicle. Even a simple notification ping on your synced infotainment system is enough to distract. So use your phone only in emergencies, and even then, it is best to pull over just to be safe. Pull over when possible Speaking of pulling over, safe driving guidelines dictate that you should not do anything other than drive while on the road. If you want to check your location, don’t use a map or a navigation system while in motion. Instead, pull over and take your time. Pulling over applies to eating and drinking as well, as these acts engage your hands and eyes. All it takes is a few seconds of distraction for a crash to occur, even at low speeds. Just find a parking lot or a safe space off the road to finish what you want to do before hitting that throttle once again. Prepare beforehand Prepping before starting your vehicle can even help you avoid distractions on the road. Start by ensuring that you have your infotainment set up just the way you want, as well as the navigation system. If you are traveling with kids or pets, ensure that they are buckled in, as they can be a dangerous distraction if they are bouncing around inside the cabin. Also, ensure that you eat something before you start driving. An empty stomach will have you thinking about food instead of the road ahead, and low blood sugar often results in road rage. Keep calm on the road While we’re on the topic of road rage, it’s worth remembering that emotions on the road are detrimental to concentration. Stifle feelings like overexcitement, anger, or disappointment, as they can overtake your thoughts. Keeping calm includes not getting distracted by what is around you, so pull over if you see something exciting and want to take a picture. Refrain from focusing on other drivers’ behavior and engaging careless drivers. Use your passenger as a co-pilot Multi-tasking while driving is dangerous. If you want to do something else in the car, you can ask your passengers for help. They can change music for you, set the air conditioner, and help you navigate. However, ensure that your passengers remember that you are driving and should avoid distracting you, for engaging them may take your mind off the road. Spread the message about “Distracted Driving Awareness Month”  The state of Kentucky has attributed as much as 37% of accidents to driver inattention. Preventing these incidents by reducing distractions can save lives and prevent injuries, and together, we can end distracted driving risks by implementing the above. Make sure you focus your mind, hand, and eyes on driving. Now is the time to spread the word that April is “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” and educate others about avoiding distracted driving.

onstar driver crash report

Hit the open highway and drive down that 4×4 trail with care folks. Each year millions of people from around the world are in a car crash of some sort. Often resulting in injuries, and sometimes even death. Anyone can become a victim, regardless of age, sex, or social status. However, some groups are more at risk than others. Young drivers Statistics show that young drivers, especially those in the 16–20-year age group are most at risk when it comes to car crashes. However, in reality, the crash rate of drivers in the age group of 16 to 19 is nearly four times higher than that of drivers aged 20 and older. Younger drivers perform risky driving maneuvers like speeding, getting distracted while driving, and driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Furthermore, their lack of experience and over-confidence tend to increase the number of these incidents. Gender Gender-wise, research shows that males are the most common factor in car crashes. According to a study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highways Safety (IIHS) in 2020, males are almost twice as likely as females to be involved in a fatal car crash. This gender inequality mainly comes from the fact that men often partake in risky driving behavior like excessive speeding, aggressive driving, and not using seat belts. Elderly drivers On the other side of the age spectrum are the seniors, which includes anyone 75 years or above. This demographic poses a similar risk of road incidents, as the National Institute on Aging (NIA) informs that in terms of crash rate per mile, older drivers are second only to young drivers. As vision, hearing, and reaction time decrease, the driving capacity of the elderly decreases. Moreover, older drivers often have more medical conditions and use more medications than younger people. Race and ethnicity Recent studies have shown that minority groups experience more injuries and deaths from car crashes than white Americans. In 2020 alone, Latino Americans suffered from 17% of all fatal accidents in the USA. Rural residents People located in rural areas are also more vulnerable to car crashes than those in urban areas. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rural residents tend to drive longer and on more treacherous roads, where the temptation of high-speed driving is greater. Rural areas also have more wildlife collisions, and due to having limited access to emergency services, injuries often become more severe. Occupation Some professions, like truck drivers, delivery drivers, and emergency workers, also are at high risk when it comes to road crashes. These occupations usually require long driving hours, often under adverse road and weather conditions. Fatigue-driven incidents within emergency responders while driving at high speeds are a serious concern as well. Common causes of a car crash Although some demographics are at greater risk of car crashes, other factors can make a driver more prone to having an accident.  Speeding: Overspeeding is a major cause of car crashes because it negates the driver’s reaction time and increases the extent of a crash. Distracted Driving: Engaging in practices like texting, eating, or using GPS while on the move can result in becoming less attentive to the road. Driving under the influence: Alcohol and drugs affect a driver’s judgment, as well as coordination and reaction times. Weather conditions: Rain, snow, and fog can make it difficult to see and/or control a vehicle. Conclusion Although anyone can be involved in a car crash, some groups are at higher risk than others. Car crashes are much more common among young drivers, males, elderly drivers, rural residents, and those with automotive occupations. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that variables like irresponsible driving and unfavorable weather conditions can also pose a threat. So, drive safely and be aware of the dangers around you so as not to endanger yourself and others.

truck lawyer crash

Finding the right legal help after a truck crash can significantly affect the outcome of your case. The complexities of truck injury claims require a lawyer who understands the law and has a proven track record of success in similar cases.  But where do you start your search for the best truck injury lawyer in Cape Girardeau? This guide will navigate the process, ensuring you have the information you need to make an informed decision. Start with online research The internet is a powerful tool for finding legal representation. Start your search with a simple query for “truck injury lawyer in Cape Girardeau” to get a list of potential candidates. Visit their websites to learn about their experience, specialties, and case outcomes. Many lawyers also share client testimonials and detailed case studies online, which can give you insight into their expertise and client satisfaction levels. Additionally, look for any articles, blogs, or legal guides they’ve published. This content can provide a deeper understanding of their knowledge and approach to truck injury cases.  Check legal directories and review sites Legal directories like Avvo, Justia, and Martindale-Hubbell can be invaluable resources. These platforms provide listings of attorneys by practice area and location, along with reviews and ratings. Look for a truck injury lawyer with high ratings and positive reviews from past clients. These directories often include peer reviews as well, offering insights from other legal professionals about the lawyer’s capabilities. Furthermore, review sites can give you a glimpse into the lawyer’s reputation in the community and their standing in the legal field. A lawyer with a strong reputation is likely to provide high-quality representation. Ask for lawyer recommendations Word-of-mouth recommendations are incredibly valuable when searching for a lawyer. Ask friends, family, or acquaintances in similar situations for their recommendations. Personal experiences can offer a unique perspective on a lawyer’s communication style, dedication, and overall client service. Additionally, consider asking other legal professionals for recommendations. Lawyers often know the reputations of their peers, even if they practice in a different area of law. A recommendation from within the legal community can carry significant weight. Review case results A lawyer’s track record is one of the best indicators of their capability to handle your case. Look for information on past truck injury cases they’ve handled, especially those similar to yours. Successful case results, including settlement amounts and verdicts, can demonstrate the lawyer’s ability to negotiate and litigate truck injury claims effectively. Don’t hesitate to ask the lawyer for case studies or examples of their work during your initial consultation. A reputable lawyer will be proud to share their successes and explain how they achieved positive outcomes for their clients. Assess communication skills Effective communication is crucial in a lawyer-client relationship. During your initial consultation, observe how the lawyer listens to you and responds to your questions. They should be able to explain legal concepts in simple terms and provide clear answers. An attentive, empathetic, and communicative lawyer is more likely to provide the support and guidance you need throughout your case. Moreover, inquire about their policy for keeping clients updated on their case progress.  Consider experience and specialization When it comes to truck injury cases, the experience and specialization of your lawyer matter significantly. A lawyer specializing in truck accidents will have a deeper understanding of the regulations governing the trucking industry, as well as experience dealing with large trucking companies and their insurers. Ask potential lawyers about their years of experience and the number of truck injury cases they’ve handled. An experienced truck injury lawyer will be familiar with the strategies that yield the best results in these complex cases. Understanding fee structures Before making your final decision, it’s important to understand how the lawyer charges for their services. Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if you win your case. Make sure you understand the percentage they will take as their fee and any other costs you might be responsible for. Clear communication about fees and costs upfront can help prevent surprises and ensure you’re comfortable with the financial arrangements. Finding the best truck injury lawyer in Cape Girardeau requires thorough research, careful consideration of their experience and track record, and assessing their communication skills and client satisfaction. By following these steps, you can find a lawyer who not only meets your legal needs but also provides the support and representation necessary to navigate the complexities of a truck injury claim. Remember, the right lawyer can make all the difference in achieving a fair and just outcome for your case.

drunk driving

Drunk driving remains one of the main causes of car-related crashes and road fatalities. Although the laws are strict and there is a lot of awareness, many people continue to drink and drive. Alcohol-impaired driving comprised 28% of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2021, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That translates to one person being killed in an alcohol-related traffic incident every 52 minutes. These statistics indicate a serious problem that must be solved as soon as possible, as each year, more than 10,000 people are killed in alcohol crashes or are left with life-changing injuries. In 2022 alone, the small city of Spokane saw 217 alcohol-related accidents. Not only do these numbers symbolize lives lost but also the tragic effect drunk driving has on families and communities. Drunk drivers are a threat to everyone The dangers associated with drunk driving are not confined to the driver, but anyone around them, including passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers as well. Alcohol influences a person’s decisions, sight, and response time, and makes them more careless. A small amount of alcohol can even cause a person to lose control of a vehicle, even after a small amount of alcohol. In fact, the NHTSA reports that despite the legal intoxication for a full-grown adult being that of a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher, he/she is more than four times likely to be involved in a crash compared to a sober driver. Despite there being widespread research and awareness programs, many people still downplay the dangers of drunk driving, proclaiming that they have a high alcohol tolerance, or that they are just traveling a short distance. Nonetheless, the fact remains that any level of alcohol in the system raises the possibility of an incident, and there is no safe amount of driving while drunk. Drunk driving statistics Besides creating a physical disability, drunk driving also has grave legal ramifications. It is an offense to drive under the influence (DUI) or drive when intoxicated (DWI) in all 50 states. If arrested, one can be fined, have his/her license suspended, be made to take alcohol education courses, get community service, and even serve jail time. Such sanctions not only impact the individual but also their family and ability to continue their occupation. Additionally, drunk driving tends to weaken the economy. Alcohol-related crashes cost the United States more than $44 billion per year, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These costs included aspects such as medical care, rehabilitation, property loss, and lost economic productivity. Further, someone with a DUI conviction also sees an increase in insurance premiums, and hence, the person may end up in financial duress in certain circumstances. And then there are the hazards associated with innocent victims. Every year, thousands of nondrinking drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are injured or killed in alcohol-related crashes. Regrettably, children are also not spared, with child passenger fatalities from alcohol-related crashes accounting for 22% of the total in 2019. Avoiding drunk driving The most unsurprising thing about drunk driving is that it is completely avoidable. People just need to make responsible and well-informed decisions. Making other arrangements, like a designated driver, public transportation, or hailing a ride-sharing service can make all the difference. Furthermore, communities and law enforcement agencies must uphold harsh laws and penalties associated with drinking and driving. Recently, technological innovations have played an important factor in the decrease in drunk driving cases. Equipment like ignition interlocks that force a driver to produce a breath sample before starting the car has been shown to lower instances by 70%. Among other measures, some states have also introduced sobriety checkpoints that serve to detect and arrest people who are driving while impaired. Conclusion The threat posed by drunk driving is significant. It is an important issue that should be approached jointly by all of us, as that allows communities and governmental bodies alike the opportunity to solve this issue. Although punitive legislation and technological developments will help prevent drunk driving, the ultimate responsibility is on each of us.  Raising awareness about the hazards of drunk driving and teaching ourselves and others how to make responsible choices can save lives and prevent the tragic outcome of this dangerous act. All it takes is one choice and an unnecessary tragedy on the road can be avoided.

Jeep Blends Retro and Modern in Latest Moab Concepts

The Easter Jeep Safari is right around the corner, so it only makes sense for Jeep to show off its custom chops.

jeep easter jeep safari concepts

  • The Easter Jeep Safari is a massive off-road gathering in Moab, Utah, during the last week in March.
  • The design team prepared a custom Gladiator, Grand Wagoneer, and a pair of custom Wranglers ahead of the event.
  • These custom concepts highlight the design team’s prowess but also feature pieces available out of the Jeep Performance Parts catalog.

Spread across the portfolio, Jeep prepared a Gladiator, Grand Wagoneer, and two different approaches at a custom Wrangler. While these custom concepts won’t hit the dealership anytime soon, the company has borrowed some ideas from these concepts over the years and shuffled them into production.

Jeep Wrangler Low Down Concept

Kicking off the concept run, it’s probably most wise to discuss the pair of Wrangler machines. The first Wrangler echoes another Easter Jeep Concept that was dubbed the Lower 40 concept over a decade ago and is clearly the inspiration for the modern Low Down Concept.

This new concept rides on 42 inches of BFGoodrich Krawler rubber that wraps a set of 20-inch wheels. Surprisingly, these massive tires are managed by a stock Wrangler Rubicon suspension. Dana 60 axles fore and aft pack 5.38:1 gearsets to take the power from the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 and send it to that big tire package.

Naturally, there’s plenty of custom bodywork. High-clearance fender flares are tasked with covering the tires and keeping things from rubbing. Shortened front and rear bumpers help with approach and departure angles. Jeep also made a custom see-through power dome hood to show off the 6.4-liter mill.

The rear door handles were deleted to make it look like an LJ-series Wrangler despite having two more doors. Jeep finished this custom Wrangler in poison apple red. A minimalist, motorsport-inspired interior helps round out this Wrangler.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept

The second custom Wrangler dubbed the Jeep Willys Dispatcher started life as a Jeep Wrangler 4xe. This custom 4xe rides on a set of 36-inch Traxion tires that wrap a set of 16-inch by 7-inch alloy faux steel wheels. This tall and narrow concept harks back to vintage offroading, and it sports a Warn winch housed in the custom front bumper and is finished in element 115 green.

While the outside is relatively mild, this PHEV Wrangler features an over-the-top interior, with custom houndstooth and leather seat covers to accent the vintage vibe. A JPP Bikini top and vinyl floor covering round out the old-school aesthetic.

Jeep’s custom Gladiator also leans into yesterday’s styling with a wild custom finish. Dubbed Gingersnap, this Gladiator sports a two-tone ginger snap metallic finish with a black graphic package—looking like it was ripped right out of the 1980s.

This custom pickup rides on a set of 40-inch BFGoodrich K03 tires that wrap 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl wheels. Concept JPP flat fenders advance the vintage style and could one day make their way to the JPP catalog.

Like the other off-roaders, this Gladiator sports a set of Dana 60 axles that pack 5.38 to 1 gears. A modified AEV front bumper houses a Warn winch, and an AccuAir air suspension gives you an adjustable ride height.

Rounding out the custom Jeeps is the Vacationeer. Based on the Grand Wagoneer Series III, this custom luxe family hauler leans into the overlanding lifestyle. Riding on a set of 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires that wrap 18-inch wheels, this Jeep still has some off-roading chops. There’s also a custom woodgrain graphic that ties its spearmint paint to the Wagoneer’s heritage.

While the color looks cool, the biggest change might be the roof tent and interior. The folks at Jeep removed the second and third row of seats to make this rig better suited for sleeping. There’s also a custom, carbon-fiber RedTail Overland SkyLoft that sits on the roof.

Accessing this pop-up tent is as easy as climbing through the hole in the roof that Jeep made. That’s right: You climb into the roof tent from inside the cabin. A custom Kiel James interior rounds out the major changes.

Sorry, none of these custom machines are for sale, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if some of these styling decisions trickle down to the production lines—namely, that woodgrain graphic. If you want to see these in person, they’ll all be at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah this month.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Dispatcher Concept is a retro-inspired off-road hybrid

This year's Easter Jeep Safari has delivered the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Dispatcher concept off-roader, which highlights the capability of the hybrid 4xe platform while celebrating the nostalgia of the post-war Jeeps enjoyed by service members returning to the home front.

The new Dispatcher concept SUV begins with a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe powered by the 2.0-liter I-4 plug-in hybrid setup. Element 115 Green paint will grab your attention and the Jeep’s rolling stock will hold it—36-inch Traxion pizza cutters and cream-colored 16x7-inch steel wheels.

A new lifted suspension

Dana 50 axles route power to the dirt while a Jeep Performance Parts suspension kit, featuring Bilstein dampers, handles bump absorption.

A flatfender homage on the hood

WILLYS is stamped into the sides of the hood in homage to the flat-fender Jeeps of the past.

A modern classic warn winch

Up front, a classic-looking-yet-totally-new Warn M8274 winch, spooled with synthetic rope, sits on the stubby bumper.

The custom badging

Where you’d normally find the “Trail Rated” badge, the Jeep designers fashioned a custom badge highlighting how Jeep grilles have evolved from the wartime 4x4s of yore to the present.

The low-backed seats

What about those seats? They’re modern units sans headrest for that classic low-back look and feel, trimmed in saddle leather and houndstooth cloth. The Jeep Performance Parts vinyl floor underfoot makes post-trail cleanups a cinch.

There's onboard air

Need to air up those tires after a day on the trails? The Jeep Performance Parts air compressor stealthily mounted within the tailgate is on deck.

Don't forget to pop bottles

The clutch of Jeep concepts is never complete without a way to facilitate post-trail celebrations. Beside the spare tire is a handy bottle opener for those frosty campsite cream sodas.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

easter jeep safari 2024

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

easter jeep safari 2024

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

easter jeep safari 2024

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

easter jeep safari 2024

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

easter jeep safari 2024

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

easter jeep safari 2024

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

easter jeep safari 2024

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

easter jeep safari 2024

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

easter jeep safari 2024

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
