A Wine Weekend in Lake Erie Wine Country

By Author Laura Longwell

Posted on Last updated: May 20, 2021

In the winter, the area around Erie, Pennsylvania, commonly gets as much as 8 feet of snow. It hardly sounds like a good location for growing grapes and making wine. But, in an odd twist, it turns out it’s actually the ideal place. The perfect combination of geography, soil composition, and weather makes the region one of the top places for making sweet wines in the United States. And the winemakers don’t stop there. Here’s a look at what some of the best Lake Erie wineries have to offer.

Lake Erie Wine Country

Best lake erie wineries, courtyard winery, presque isle wine cellars, south shore wine company, arrowhead wine cellars, johnson estate winery, mazza chautauqua cellars / five & 20 spirits & brewing.

Grapes growing in vineyard at Presque Isle Wine Cellars, a winery in Lake Erie wine country

The area around the south shore of Lake Erie is one of the largest grape-growing areas in the U.S., with over 40,000 acres of grapevines. Most are of the variety you might want to eat or juice (think Welch’s). But in the last 50 years, more European varieties have been added, expanding the options for local winemakers.

An area that once focused almost entirely on Niagara, Catawba, and other sweet grapes (and thus, sweet wines), now often includes Chardonnay, Vignoles, Merlot, and a red grape we’ve gotten to try on our travels in Austria and Prague called Blaufrankisch, among many others.

Wine bottles on display at Arrowhead Wine Cellars

These different grapes have found a home in the over 20 wineries that now occupy a 40-mile stretch on the south shore of Lake Erie. Some focus their efforts on fruit wines, sweet wines, and specialties like ice wine, while others expand these offering to include sophisticated drier whites and reds. Regardless of your taste preference, you’re likely to find something to love among the offerings of the Erie wineries. Take a weekend to explore and find your favorite like we did.

Wine bottle and glass at Courtyard Winery

With its terracotta and stone façade, Courtyard Winery is hard to miss right along Route 20. And you wouldn’t want to. From grape to bottle, the winery is hands-on during every step of making their small batch wines. They served up some of the best options we tried on our tour through the area.

Exterior and sign for Courtyard Winery

This 10-year-old winery is home to two distinct brands of wine that are served at two separate bars in the tasting room. The LaCourette line is more traditional dry and semi-dry varietals primarily of European origin, such as Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Barjo Bons (“Crazy Friends”) line features sweet and semi-sweet blends such as “First Kiss,” a blend of Cayuga and Catawba, or “Sassy Blue,” a blueberry wine. Visitors choose either a dry or a sweet tasting. While we focused on the dry options, the sweet wines are clearly also very popular.

Top picks: Chardonnay, Captain’s Red (blend of Cabernet Franc and Corot Noir) Location: 10021 West Main Road (Route 20) in North East, PA

Wine bottle and glass at Presque Isle Wine Cellars

One of the most well-known wineries in Lake Erie wine country, Presque Isle Wine Cellars sits by a small stream complete with a waterfall. The buildings comprise what is essentially a one-stop shop for those who love wine. You can find Presque Isle’s wines, gifts, and all manner of wine-making and beer-brewing supplies here in addition to the restaurant in the Isle House.

With over 50 years of experience in making wine, Presque Isle Wine Cellars produces 40+ wines – virtually all of which are made from grapes grown near Lake Erie. The offerings span a wide range of styles from dry wines made with European varietals to sweet wines made with native grapes, as well as port-style and dessert wines. Our favorites fell in the sweet and semi-sweet categories.

Top picks: Vignoles, Falling Waters (carbonated blend of Bacchus and Valvin Muscat grapes) Location: 9440 West Main Road (Route 20) in North East, PA

People in stone wine cellar

South Shore Wine Company is the most historic of the wineries in Erie. Dating from the 1860s, the French-style underground wine cavern was part of Erie’s first commercial winery during and after the Civil War.

Following Prohibition, the wine cellar remained unused until the Mazza family reopened it in 2007 under its original name. The family carefully restored the original stone masonry, trying to remain as faithful as possible to the original construction. With the exceptions of a remodeled entrance and a tasting bar, the winery looks much as it did 150 years ago – an ideal environment in which to enjoy some expertly-crafted wine.

Port wine and chocolate truffle

South Shore Wine Company is one of three wineries run by the Mazza family, but most of the wines sold here are unique to this tasting room. They offer over 20 options from dry reds to semi-sweet whites and fruit and specialty wines. Their dry varietals and blends stand out as some of the best in an area that has a strong focus on sweeter varieties. There is also a café upstairs that serves paninis, salads, and other light fare during the warmer months.

Top picks: Gruner Veltliner, Unwooded Chardonnay Location: 1120 Freeport Rd. (Route 89) in North East, PA

Bottles of wine at a wine tasting

Since 1998, Arrowhead Wine Cellars’ owners Nick and Kathy Mobilia have been making wine from the grapes and fruit grown on their 250-acre farm. They grow European varietals such as Pinot Grigio and Riesling alongside North American grapes like Niagara, Catawba, and Concord. This allows them to make and bottle a wide variety of products from traditional dry wines to semi-sweet and sweet wines. They also produce a line of fruit wines (no grapes included) that includes customer favorites like blueberry wine and apple wine.

Arrowhead Wine Cellars – a name that pays homage to the Native Americans who originally settled the land – also produces a unique line of fruit juices. Their line of three grape juices and cherry and apple options are handled much in the same way that their wines are, but the juices are never fermented, making them a great choice for people looking for a non-alcoholic beverage. In addition to the wines and juices, Arrowhead sells a selection of wine accessories, seasonal items, food, and clothes.

Top picks: Vignoles, Riesling Location: 12073 East Main Road (Route 20) in North East, PA

Red building and sign for Johnson Estate Wines

The rows of grapes that stretch out from the Johnson Estate Winery seem to go on forever. This 200-acre farm just east of the Pennsylvania/New York border is home to 11 varieties of grapes and the century-old apple storage building that now houses the winery and tasting room. As New York’s oldest estate winery, Johnson Estate has been around long enough to perfect the craft of making fine wine.

Wine bottles decorated with prize medals

At Johnson Estate Winery, each step of the wine-making process is carefully managed. From grape growing to bottle storage, each detail is handled to ensure that the 50+ wines made here are the best. As a result, it’s hard to find an option that doesn’t please the palate among the range of traditional reds and whites and specialty wines available here.

Top picks: Traminette, Cabernet Sauvignon Location: 8419 West Main Road (Route 20) in Westfield, NY

Spirits and wine bottles on display at a tasting bar

Across the street from Johnson Estate Winery is the unique combination of Mazza Chautauqua Cellars and Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing – New York’s first winery, distillery, and brewery under one roof. The facility features a tasting room where you can try all three kinds of beverages and a brewing and distilling area where visitors can get a glimpse into how the products are made.

Rye whiskey bottle and shot glass on a bar with menus

Mazza Chautauqua Cellars and Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing are owned by the Mazza family who also run South Shore Wine Company and Mazza Vineyards nearby in Pennsylvania. As a result, some of the wines available here are also available at the other properties. However, many of the over 20 wines sold here are exclusive to this property, such as the Gewurztraminer, the Vignoles, and the Chautauqua line of wines, among others.

The distillery and brewery are what really make this location unique. Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing makes a variety of small-batch craft beers (currently ales and stouts) and spirits such as fruit brandies, limoncello, and whiskeys. They use local products in both their grain-based spirits and beer, and their goal is to become a completely “grain-to-glass” facility.

Top picks: Limoncello, Rye Whiskey Location: 8398 West Main Road (Route 20) in Westfield, NY Want to know more about wineries in Pennsylvania? Check out the wineries of Central PA .

We were the guests of Arrowhead Wine Cellars and South Shore Wine Company thanks to Visit Erie . All opinions of the bounty of offerings are our own.

5 Excellent Wineries to Tour Around Lake Erie

' src=

Living in Pittsburgh for nearly all of my life, I’ve had the pleasure of checking out the wineries at Lake Erie on more than one occasion.

Sure, it’s not Sonoma Valley, but you’d be surprised at the quality of the wines you can find here, plus you can sample the super unique ice wine.

While the whole area around Lake Erie is blessed with great wine and many wineries, here I will focus solely on the wineries located stateside.

And if you’re looking to match your visit to the winery with a fun day at the beach or a romantic sunset by the lakeshore, check out my favorite Lake Erie beaches .

My 5 Favorite Wineries at Lake Erie

1. penn shore winery and vineyards – great affordable wine in a stunning venue..

Penn Shore Winery

The Wines at Penn Shore Winery:

The winery offers an extensive selection of local white wines and French-American reds, distinct in Table Wine, Specialty Wine, Vintage Wine, and Sparkling Wine:

  • Table wine bottles are fairly priced around $8-10, and are mostly obtained by Native American Concord Grape.
  • Specialty wines are the French white blend Kir ($11) and the red and robust Holiday Spice ($11).
  • For sparkling wines, the most affordable options are the local Bubbling Niagara and Catawba ($12.95), while Champagne is slightly more expensive ($20) but still fairly priced.
  • The Vintage Wine selection mostly includes French and Hungarian hybrids, like Vidal Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The price range for this selection goes from around $13 to $20.

Good deals and discounts are available when purchasing multiple bottles of wine: buying 6 bottles will grant you a 10% discount, up to 20% for 12 bottles. For large purchases over 36 bottles, the price is reduced by 25%.

What makes the Penn Shore Winery special?

This award-winning vineyard is one of the best spots to enjoy locally grown wine near Lake Erie. It is widely known as both a tourists’ and locals’ favorite.

Penn Shore Winery is famous for its great service, knowledgeable and polite sommeliers, and ample choice in the wine menu.

It is possible to order a tasting of the self-produced wines, complete with refreshments.

The interior has a clean and elegant look, with wooden furniture granting a hint of a rustic feel, just enough to make it homey.

There is also a covered patio where one can enjoy the wine on a good day. For a truly magical evening call in advance to find out when the Music in the Vineyard open-air concerts is going to be held.

While the summer is perfect for enjoying wine outside, the fall is the best time of the year to take a scenic stroll through the vineyard, immersed in the ripe grape scent.

For those interested in the story of the winery, and the making process of wine, a self-guided tour is available.

2. 6 Mile Cellars, Inc. – Small but High-Quality Selection:

6 Mile Cellars

The Wines at 6 Mile Cellars:

If you love dry wine the 6 Mile Cellars won’t disappoint. The selection includes a great variety of high-quality and locally produced wines to choose from:

  • Winsome Red, Pinot Gris, and Noiret are the main choices when it comes to dry wines. For those looking for American-grown vines, the Pinot Gris is a great option (from NY), while the Winsome Red comes from a blend of Chambourcin and Noiret.
  • The two sweet wines available are the Derby White, and the Derby Red, both great options for accompanying dessert.

Prices per bottle range from $12 to $20.

What makes 6 Mile Cellars special?

One of the things visitors appreciate the most about 6 Mile Cellars is the quality of the wines. While the selection may not seem too extensive, it’s a conscious choice to reduce the number of options and focus on keeping solely high-quality products.

The Winery is also famous for its charming historical barn, where one can sit through a wine sampling in a lovely atmosphere, as well as for the curated interiors and the stunning vineyard.

Many choose 6 Mile Cellars as their wedding reception venue because of the great visuals this location offers.

The wine tasting menu includes four 3 oz. samples and costs $8. The tasting menu can be enjoyed in the tasting room inside the barn or on the patio (equipped with external heathers).

Cocktails and appetizers are also available.

3. Arundel Cellars & Brewing Co – Come for the wine, stay for the food!

Arundel Winery

The Wines at Arundel Cellars & Brewing:

Interestingly, the Arundel signature wines are love themed. At least in the names! One white, one red, and one rosè blend are available, and the names are truly something else:

  • Sweet Kiss is the red Arundel option. Produced from the local Concordia vines, the wine is characterized by a distinctly sweet and earthy taste and accompanies perfectly meat-based dishes and cheese platters.
  • The self-produced white is Young Love, which derives from the locally grown Niagara grapes. Flavourful and sweet, this fragrant wine pairs well with fish, seafood, or white meat.
  • The Concordia and Niagara blend has the fitting name of Soulmates. The wine is fruity but delicate, with the two different grapes complementing each other in a “soulmate-like” pairing.

The signature wines cost either $12.50 per 75 ml bottle or $20 per 1.5-liter bottle.

What makes Arundel Cellars & Brewing special?

Arundel Cellars is located in a renovated historical barn, originally built during the 19th century. The bright red exteriors contrast nicely with the green vineyard around it, and the atmosphere is relaxed yet elegant.

The interiors are cozy looking, with the classic combination of stone walls and wooden rooftop complementing each other nicely.

Outside the barn, you’ll find plenty of seating, and during the summer several concerts are held on a temporary stage. Perfect for live music, and wine tasting lovers.

Arundel is not only a winery but also a brewer, with the menu including a variety of craft artisanal beers.

While other wineries only offer a few complementary appetizers, this spot is also renowned for its tasty food options. Sharable meat and cheese platters are available, as well as one vegetarian option of vegetable and hummus.

Salads and sandwiches are available every day, however, the main dish options are seasonal and change according to the day.

4. South Shore Wine Company – at Lake Erie, but with a European Feel!

South Shore Wines

The Wines at South Shore Wine Company:

The South Shore Wine Company is part of a larger conglomerate of wineries between PA and NY, and shares with them a truly extensive and impressive wine list:

  • Glasses can go for as low as $5 for the local vines like the Niagara or Concord, up to more expensive Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, Riesling (around $8 per glass), and much more. If you’re looking for something more exotic, you can try the South Shore Sangria. You can check out the complete menu here , which also includes the price per bottle.
  • 12 oz. Wine Slushies are also available and delicious. On a Slushie Sunday, you can have a small discount and get one slushie for only $5.
  • Weekend specials on Saturday and Sunday feature mimosa-themed nights with “the perfect mimosa” for $7, and even mimosa tastings for $12.

What makes South Shore Wine Company special?

The Instagram-worthy location of the South Shore Wine Company leaves nothing to be desired.

The main indoor area is a historical stone cellar with a vaulted ceiling, decorated with simple and rustic taste.

South Shore Winery

The overall atmosphere of the underground cellar is intimate and the setting picturesque. A great spot to indulge in some wine tasting or a few mimosas.

The South Shore Wine Company often hosts events and themed nights, which can make for a fun and different than usual evening.

Coming up the winery has planned a “Mazzmosas Evening” (a fun crisis of Mazza and Mimosas), and Slushie Sundays.

You can check out the upcoming events on the official website .

5. Presque Isle Wine Cellars – Ample Choice of Award-Winning Bottles at one of the best Wineries at Lake Erie.

Presque Isle Wine Cellar

The Wines at Presque Isle Wine Cellars:

The prized wines of this winery are well known by local sommeliers and of course wine enthusiasts tourists, and visitors.

Over the years, the winery has participated and consistently won medals at the American Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition, Pennsylvania Wine Excellence Award, Great Lakes Great Wine Competition, and more.

Let’s take a look at what the cellar has to offer:

  • European style red wines such as Cabernet, Saudade, Merlot, and Blaufränkisch are among the most popular choices.
  • The local Lake Erie area wines are also available, from Niagara to Concord, Blush, and Catawba.
  • An extensive list of Dry and Semi-Dry Whites will make for a perfect celebratory moment. Among the most notorious bottles, you can find Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Noir, Riesling, Freeport White, and Rosè.

The Presque Isle Wine Cellars menu (updated 2022) can be downloaded here .

What makes Presque Isle Wine Cellars special?

While the interior is not as elegant as it is basic and rustic, the natural surroundings of the Presque Isle Wine Cellars are simply stunning.

The Isle House is immersed in deep vegetation, and just a short walk from the winery you’ll find small waterfalls and creeks.

Especially in the fall, the colors of the foliage give this location an unmatched atmosphere, and a short and pleasant hike will give you the chance to work off a bit of the delicious wines and appetizers.

Tips When Visiting Wineries in Erie, PA

All of these wineries are part of Lake Erie Wine Country , a 50-mile stretch along the shores of Lake Erie from Silver Creek, NY to Harborcreek, PA with more than 20 wineries.

1. Know the best time of year to visit these wineries in Erie, PA.

Most of these wineries are open for tours and tastings all year round, but the best time to visit these wineries would be during the summer months, when most of them are open daily and for longer hours.

2. Start your day early.

Dropping by as early as you can gives you plenty of time so you can fit in more winery visits in a day without having to rush through them.

Lawrence Park Dinor

Start your day at the Lawrence Park Dinor (not a typo) for one of the best breakfast’s in town.

It’s situated inside an old train car and when Dawn suggests a slice of pie at the end of the meal, you say yes.

LP Dinor

3. Explore options for group touring.

Look into hiring a car or limousine service, planning an itinerary, and going as a group. Not only will no one need to be the designated driver and miss out on the tastings but you can also save some time and money this way.

Make sure to contact the wineries you plan to visit in advance if your tour group is eight people or more so that you’ll know if they can accommodate your group.

4. Learn wine-tasting basics and etiquette.

You don’t really have to enroll in a wine course to appreciate wine, but knowing the basic things to observe, such as color, aroma, body, acidity, and finish, would enhance your experience.

After visiting numerous other wineries on the wine trail, I have to admit this was the most enjoyable. Very relaxed atmosphere being located in a historic barn is really nice. The wines are very good and the staff is friendly. Jared was our host and he knows his wine. Gave us so much information about their wines and winemaking in general. Will definitely hit this one next time we are in town. Great area for wine tastings.

This place is a smaller winery but we'll established. They have really good wines. I'm big on all the reds that they have to offer. They are making a port wine that will have. 3 years in a barrel aged when it's ready for a bottle. It will be absolutely amazing.

The girls in my family participated Friday in the Harvest Wine Festival and started at 6 Mile Cellars. We loved the wine and the customer service was OUTSTANDING. It felt like we were cozied up to a great friend's personal cellar and he/she were sharing their favorite wines. 6 Mile Cellars was our first stop on the tour and it set a high expectation for the remainder of the day. We loved their Derby Red and variety of ciders. The Cab Franc was also very good! Thanks for making our weekend trip so much fun! 10/5 Stars!

We were in Erie for a spur of the moment trip and found 6 Mile Cellars was the closest winery on the Erie wine trail, so we hit it up! It was a Saturday afternoon and the weather was perfect. They have a nice lawn area in front of the vineyards where you can hang out and also a covered area with benches outside. They had a food truck outside that night that had delicious pulled pork nachos. They also had donuts and icecream. Overall, the staff was really friendly and knowledgeable about their wines. We started off with a tasting. It was $2 for 5 tastes or $5 total if you wanted to keep the glass. As far as the wines go, they were okay. I like bold dry reds and they didn't really have anything like that. I'm new to PA, but I think that it's pretty common for PA wineries to be more sweet and light compared to the typical CA winery. The merlot was my favorite. We each got a glass and hung out outside and enjoyed the nice scenery. When we went back in for a second glass, the place was packed! We waited a while for our glasses of wine while everyone was doing their tastings, and they ended up just giving them to us for free. Once the crowd died down, one of the staff members noticed us sitting in the grass and took out some lawn chairs for us to use. As I said, everyone was super friendly! I'm excited to head back up that way to see what the rest of the Erie wine trail has to offer.

Had the most amazing time today at this winery! The workers were friendly and knowledgeable. The wine was fantastic- we were partial to the Derby Red. Our dog Teddy felt included and loved. We will definitely be back again!

Great experience here! My husband and I purchased a Groupon, and we were not disappointed at all! Our tasting was great (we ended up getting two bottles of the Pinot Noir and a bottle of the Riesling), and we enjoyed speaking with our "bartender". One of the best things about the winery was their customer service. As we paid, my husband's credit card was not given back to him - something we didn't notice until dinner. They found my husband on FB and messaged him to let him know what occurred. We returned to get the card, they apologized profusely, and gave us each a free glass of wine for the trouble. Not needed, but definitely appreciated. We will be back!

We popped on here when in Erie for the weekend. For a new winery they make some really nice wines. The friendly staff made us feel at home from the start. Well worth a visit.

While up visiting family in Meadville, my girlfriend and I decided that since we do frequent wine tastings in Virginia wine country and wineries in Maryland back home, we should see what Lake Erie Wine Country has to offer. Upon arriving at 6 Mile Cellars, we were greeted by an extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. The first surprise was the total cost of the tastings; I thought they had made a mistake because where we usually do tastings back home, the cost for 4 tastings was less than 1 typically at most Virginia wineries! Pure awesomeness you are Lake Erie Wine Country We happened to bring my girlfriend's mother and grandmother along (both of whom had never experienced a wine tasting!) and the young men providing the tasting were extremely accommodating taking the time to thoroughly explain the wines and help hone in on what they may like in particular. At one point, "grandma" (who rarely consumes alcohol) had a tad left over of a red and her glass was going to be cleared and she pipes up "hold on a second, THAT was delicious and I plan to finish!" We were given an impromptu tour of the facilities and walked out with two bottles of wine which were also an amazing deal! If you are up in this area, start your wine tour at 6 Mile Cellars first and foremost! They will not only treat you well, they will help guide the rest of your winery stops by offering recommendations. Great stuff 6 Mile, we will be back when we visit again!

Wine Touring and Tasting Along the Lake Erie Region Wine Trail

Wine Touring and Tasting Along the Lake Erie Region Wine Trail

Wine Touring and Tasting along the Lake Erie Region Wine Trail is an enjoyable way to learn about and sample the wines produced in the Lake Erie Region of Pennsylvania. Traveling along East Lake Road (Route 5) to the lovely small town of North East, you will find miles and miles of grape vines. Nestled among the vineyards are the wineries where you may tour and, of course, sample the finest wines grown in the Lake Erie Region.

Some of the wineries you don’t want to miss touring and sampling their products are:

Mazza Vineyards 11815 East Lake Road (Route 5) North East, PA

Traveling along the Lake Erie Wine Trail, you will discover one of the premier wineries in North East PA, Mazza Vineyards. Started by Joseph Mazza, who arrived in Pa in 1954 after leaving his home in Calabria, Italy, the winery continues in the family tradition as it is now run by son Robert Mazza and his wife Kathie.

The Lake Erie Region was chosen by the Mazzas because of its cool breezes, sandy soil, and the plateau like ground which created an ideal growing condition for the grapes. Its moderate climate in the spring and fall contribute to the production of exceptional grapes for wine making. Because this region is suited more for the Germanic variety of wine, the Mazzas began to produce five Johannesburg Rieslings.

Along with the Rieslings, Mazza vineyard produces the sweet juicy Niagara, Concord and Catawba grapes. Its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chambourcin are popular wine choices.

Some of the innovations developed by the Mazza Vineyard include ice wine which results from pressing grapes while they are frozen. This creates a rich wine with a residual sweetness that is suitable to be served with desserts and cheese. The Mazzas also developed a private label program that allows it customers to celebrate special occasions such as graduations, weddings, and class reunions.

Mazza wines have won several awards and are the top selling wine in PA. A tour of the winery followed by wine sampling is an exceptional treat. The guided tours demonstrate the entire winemaking process form harvesting the grapes to bottling.

The wines are reasonably priced: classic White, Red, or concord wines are under $8.00. The premium wines of Cabernet, Merlot, and Rieslings are priced under $12.00. The most expensive wine is the Iced Wine of Vidal Blanc which is priced at $39.95 as it is limited.

Arrowhead Winery 12073 East Main Road North East, PA

Arrowhead Wine Cellars, established in 1998, is a family owned by Nick and Kathy Mobilia. It was named arrowhead due to the large number of arrowheads that are found by the local grape farmers. Next to the winery, the Mobilia’s have a fruit stand selling grapes, cherries, peaches, frozen-pitted sour cherries, and fresh grape juice.

Charles Mobilia, the grandfather of Nick established the fruit farm in the 1920’s. Today Nick and his wife own a 250 acre fruit farm. In 1998, Nick opened the winery. Arrowhead wines have won several awards including a double gold for its 2004 Cabernet Franc at the 2006 Florida State International Wine competition. Silver, bronze or gold awards for Arrowhead wines have been won consistently since 2000.

Red, White, Port, Riesling and Cabernets are some of the wines that are sold at the store.

Penn Shore Winery 10225 East Lake Road (Route 5) North East, PA

Penn Shore Winery opened in 1970, one of two wineries in the state of PA. Tall mammoth stainless steel storage tanks holding 7000 gallons of wine can only be found at Penn Shore. The winery can accommodate 175,000 gallons in cooperage. During tourist season at least 150 people a day pass through the winery touring and tasting.

The winery produces the usual Red, White, Lambruscano, and Chardonnay. Specialty wines include Kir and Holiday Spice.

Penn Shore invites you to enjoy a winemaking and tasting experience as you tour their winery. As you drive to the winery, you will pass miles of rows of French hybrid and native American grape vines. The tour demonstrates the care taken with harvesting, crushing, pressing, fermentation, aging and bottling.

The prices of the wines are quite reasonable with most being under $10.00 and most expensive, the Sparkling Champagne at $13.95.

Presque Isle Wine Cellars 9440 West Main Road North East, PA

Presque Isle Wine Cellars, owned by Doug and Marlene Moorhead, was opened in 1964 and it is both a commercial winery and a national source for wine making supplies. Presque Isle Wines have won many awards and was a pioneer for growing European wine grape varieties.

This winery is located in a beautiful wooded area along Twelve-Mile Creek and is a lovely place for picnics. Winery tours and tasting are available during business hours. The winery holds a Creekside Festival scheduled during the summer and features food demonstrations and seminars on wine making, beer making, wine tasting and music.

The wines produce at Presque Isle wine Cellars are Cabernet, Concord, Niagara, Chardonnay, Port and Reflections of Lake Erie.

Special Event: September: North East Wine Country Harvest Festival

Wine Country Harvest Festival is held in North East, PA on Lake Erie. The largest grape growing region in the East welcomes visitors to its Festival. This annual event consists of a weekend celebration of music, arts crafts, and the fruits of the vine. For more information contact the North East Chamber of Commerce at 814-725-4262.

For an enjoyable afternoon or evening experience, travel along East Lake Road ( Route 5) and view the miles of grape vines and stop at the several wineries for touring and tasting. The friendly people at the vineyards will be happy to help you select a perfect wine to complement any meal.

It is home to more than 300 wineries  --  many of the vineyards in Pennsylvania are smaller, family-owned establishments which only adds to their charm. The state also offers 14 diverse, self-guided wine trails. Some of our favorites can be found in Bucks County, home to wineries such as Crossing Vineyards, Rose Bank Winery, and Old York Cellars. If you're in the mood to explore some of the state's wineries on a little day trip, definitely check out this Pennsylvania day trip  that takes you to some of  the state's finest wineries and most glorious waterfalls!

Are there many wine tours in Pennsylvania?

In addition to taking a wine trolley tour in Pennsylvania aboard Flagship Trolleys, there's actually a wine tour you can take in a luxurious limousine! Premiere #1 Limousine Service has special wine tours in their lux limos, visiting numerous wineries in Central Pennsylvania along the way. On the day of the tour, you’ll be picked up and driven to wineries in Lancaster, PA, and the surrounding communities. You never have to be concerned about how much wine you try throughout the day, because you’ll be chauffeured safely from location to location! Learn more at the Premiere #1 Limousine Service website . Another fun option is Tastings & Tours, a wine shuttle based in New Hope. If you enjoy visiting wineries, you’ll definitely want to consider climbing aboard this  Pennsylvania wine shuttle . The shuttle will take you to three wineries for a little wine tasting with a scrumptious lunch at a local restaurant in between!

Are there any other trolley tours I can take in Pennsylvania?

There's just something so whimsical about a trolley, isn't there? If wine tours aren't your thing (or you have an under-21 crowd!), you'll definitely want to check out:

  • Rockhill Trolley Museum in Rockhill Furnace. You'll discover the magic of the trolley's history in Pennsylvania by viewing the collection housed at the museum. But, the real magic begins when you climb aboard one of the trolleys for an authentic trolley ride complete with the gentle dinging of the trolley bell that alerts you your journey is about to begin!

Sip, Swirl and Savor the Flavor of the Region

Tour the Lake Erie Grape Belt’s more than 30,000 vineyard acres along a 50-mile Lake Erie wine trail, including 23 wineries known collectively as  Lake Erie Wine Country  in Chautauqua County and neighboring Pennsylvania.

Growers in Chautauqua County produce approximately 65% of New York State’s total annual grape harvest, which is then used in products sold in more than 35 countries around the globe.

Concord grapes (best known for the production of jelly, jams, juices, and, yes - wines) have made their mark on the region for generations.  In fact, Chautauqua County is the largest U.S. grape-cultivating region east of the Rockies and the largest global Concord growing region. Niagara grapes, another of the Labrusca variety, are also plentiful in the Lake Erie Grape Belt. Did you know that Welch's has deep roots in Chautauqua County? Welch's original plant in Westfield dates back to 1897, and there's still a juice storage and processing facility in the town today. Learn more at the  Grape Discovery Center in Westfield, NY.

While Labrusca grapes like Concord and Niagara make up much of the harvest, French-American and European varietals perfect for fine wines thrive here and make the Lake Erie wine trail worth a visit for a wine connoisseur or traveler interested in great tastes, lasting memories, and unbelievable views. The local wine selection spans the taste palette from dry to sweet, including award-winning dessert and ice wine, pinot noir and grigio, Riesling, port, and more.

Year-round  events  like vineyard walks, farm-to-table pairing dinners, wine clubs, wine and cheese, wine and chocolate, and harvest celebration weekends offer multiple reasons to return. *Parties of 6 or more are asked to kindly make reservations with each winery they wish to visit in advance of their tour. Brittany Sepic

I booked with La Grand Elite for my first ever wine tour and haven't used another company since. My first tour was 6 years ago, so I think that says something about the company's excellent service.

Darren Coleshill

I was visiting one of my buddies in Erie for the weekend when we used La Grand Elite for our wine/brewery tour. I never thought we'd have just as much fun riding place to place, as we had once we got to the actual venues.

Amanda Kurek

I have used La Grand Elite for events in the past, and decided to choose them for a wine tour. The high standard I had was met and then some. I will definitely be using them again for my next tour.

Kelsey Chance

I had so much fun riding with La Grand Elite for my sister's engagement party wine tour. The limo we had comfortably fit all 12 of us and every part of the experience was a great time!

Why are we a popular destination for ladies getaways?

Lake Erie Beaches & Beach Glass Hunting

Ladies love our beach for fabulous sunset watching with a glass of wine, evening campfires, and for beach glass hunting. (Did you know Lake Erie beaches are famous for beach glass?) When you rent a Lake Erie cottage, you don’t have to fight the crowds at public beaches. Access to a private neighborhood beach means more beach glass for you! Crafters also love our beach stones and driftwood for crafts.

Wineries Surround Us

The wineries that surround us can entertain you for days. Therefore, winery tours are a popular attraction for our ladies groups.

Another popular restaurant is  Noosa  (established in 2017) — the only lakefront dining and drinks experience in eastern Erie County. Noosa is just 2.5 miles from us and located at the North East Marina . Michael’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria  (delivery offered) is located in the heart of North East and the adjacent Yori Wine Cellars is open until 8pm daily, later than most wineries.

30th Birthday Ladies Getaway Celebration

The ladies pictured in this post stayed in March for a 30th birthday celebration. The celebrating began with arrival at the cottage late afternoon on a Friday. Later, they entertained themselves at Speedeez , a local bar and restaurant, with the popular Friday night karaoke. Their Saturday day was spent touring the wineries. Finally, Saturday evening was “girls night in” at the cottage with champagne and birthday celebrating!
