Northern Italy: Venice to Rome (Small Group)

Sailing Croatia - Dubrovnik to Split
Great boat, route, scenery, company. Would have like to learn more about how to actually sail but would reccomend this trip.
Scenic Montenegro Cruise
Last year, we went on the Sadri Usta 1 ship on a Montenegro gulet cruise trip. This was our first small cruise and was wonderful! The gulet was beautiful, the staff was fantastic, particularly the chef Nicola. The itinerary was gorgeous, daily swim stop and excellent food onboard. We enjoyed visiting mostly the Old town of Kotor and the lovely Perast. Choosing this kind of holiday is a fantastic way to see Montenegro out of crowds.

TURKEY SAIL - Fethiye to Fethiye (The Turquoise Delight)
I did the fethiye turqouise delight tour as a solo traveler and it was delightful from the scenery to the ship crew to the tour group, one thing I will say I would have liked to spend a bit more time on land though during the course of the week.

5 Days Albanian Country Side UNESCO Lake and old Towns Tour
Amazing Aegean (All Inclusive & Guided In-Depth Tour)
5 star experience for the “Amazing Aegean” tour. Some reasons why we booked, and how the experience exceeded our expectations: 1. Small group. We were seeking a small intimate setting that would allow us to enjoy each destination and setting without feeling like we were part of a “tour” being in a herd of people. Especially during Covid, we wanted to feel safe. Our small group size was ideal and it was so easy to get around. 2. Seamless Organization. We wanted an “all inclusive” type tour where we could both enjoy our trip without having to worry about all the logistics of how to get from place to place, booking tickets, researching the best hotels, activities, etc. George handled everything from the moment we landed. He arranged a car to drive us from the airport to the hotel, handled all the hotel reservations and the check in process was quick and easy at each destination. At no point were we waiting in long lines or wasting time with paperwork etc as everything was pre-arranged. Everything was seamless. George is an expert and has great connections everywhere so we were treated to the best private experiences and seats wherever we went. 3. Thoughtful Itinerary. Each day was thoughtfully planned so that we got the most out of our experience. We saw historic sites, beautiful views, went to off the beaten path and non-touristy destinations. Heavier walking days were followed by more leisurely activities the following day, so that we always comfortable and rested. I cannot pick what was the highlight of the tour as there was such great variety in our activities and sights… each day was amazing. 4. Dining/Food. George is a foodie and took us to the best restaurants. We tried a wide variety of the best greek dishes from local dishes, to gourmet. Most nights our dinners were accompanied by fantastic views. Delicious desserts :) 5. The Guide. If you are lucky enough to have Babis as your guide, you will know your experience will be unmatched. He is a wealth of knowledge and gave the us best lessons in greek history, mythology, & culture. There is nothing he doesn’t know!! He was so professional, friendly, passionate, and so knowledgable in every subject! He is completely fluent in Greek & English and honestly, his english vocabulary is probably more extensive than mine hah! He is just excellent! 6. Attention to detail. The smaller things George did to make sure our experience was comfortable was greatly appreciated. He tidied up the car each night so that each day began fresh with a clean van and a new water bottle on our seats. He brought the van on the ferry to the different islands and travel was so convenient. Roads in Greece are narrow and especially in Santorini, the terrain in difficult to drive but George is an excellent and safe driver. Our trip was an unforgettable and treasured experience. Although George and Babis have done these tours numerous times, their passion and excitement taking us to each destination made our whole trip! We already look forward to our next booking with PicTours of Greece so we can see our new friends again :)
THROUGH THE NORTH ATLANTIC - ARCTIC 2024- OCEAN ALBATROS
Reviews of europe tours.
Had a great time! The tour guide, Eray, was knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring a smooth journey. Although there were several commercial stops, they added an local flavor. The hotels were of good standard, and the sights, especially in Cappadocia, were breathtaking. A well-organized and memorable trip!

Welcome, fellow wanderers, to a journey into the art of spontaneous escapades—where the thrill of the unknown meets the promise of unforgettable adventures. In this guide, we'll delve into the realm of last-minute travel to Europe, unlocking the secrets to snagging the crème de la crème of deals that will make your impromptu getaway truly legendary.
Table of Contents
The appeal of last-minute travel to europe, challenges of last-minute travel, key strategies for finding last-minute travel deals, utilizing aggregator websites, subscribing to travel deal newsletters, following social media channels, flexible date searches, loyalty programs and reward points, travelocity, booking.com, booking off-peak times, monitoring flash sales and limited-time offers, bundle deals: flights, accommodations, and activities, reviewing cancellation policies, utilizing mobile apps, frequently asked questions, are last-minute travel deals really cost-effective, how can i ensure the quality of accommodations in last-minute deals, is it possible to find last-minute deals during peak travel seasons, are there any risks associated with last-minute travel booking, can loyalty programs really make a difference in last-minute travel savings.
Let's start by addressing the burning question: Why go last-minute? It's like a rollercoaster for your soul, an adrenaline rush that comes with the territory of spontaneous travel. The allure lies not just in the potential for savings (which we'll get to) but in the sheer excitement of embracing the unknown. Who needs a meticulously planned itinerary when you can let the winds of spontaneity guide you through the charming streets of Europe?
Now, before you pack your bags and click that tempting "Book Now" button, let's acknowledge the challenges. Yes, last-minute travel has its quirks. Choices might be limited, costs could be a tad higher, and flexibility might be your best friend. But fear not, intrepid traveler, for armed with the right knowledge, you'll navigate these challenges like a seasoned explorer.
Let's break it down, shall we?
Embarking on a last-minute European adventure is like being handed the keys to a secret garden. The spontaneity amplifies the thrill, turning each step into a dance with destiny. The sheer possibility of waking up in Paris, sipping espresso in Rome, or wandering through the historic streets of Barcelona with just a moment's notice is what sets last-minute travel apart.
Now, let's address the elephant in the room—the challenges. Limited choices, potential higher costs, and the need for flexibility are all part of the last-minute travel game. But, dear traveler, don't be disheartened. Think of it as a puzzle to solve rather than an obstacle to overcome. Strategic planning, a dash of flexibility, and a sprinkle of adventure will make your last-minute escapade truly extraordinary.
Now, let's talk strategy. One of the game-changers in the last-minute travel arena is the mighty aggregator websites. These digital wizards compile a cornucopia of travel options, helping you sift through the noise to find that hidden gem. Names like Skyscanner, Kayak, and Google Flights are your trusty sidekicks in this adventure.
Skyscanner, the Sherlock Holmes of travel aggregators, scours the web for the best last-minute flight options. Plug in your departure city, select "Everywhere" as your destination (because why limit yourself?), and let Skyscanner work its magic. Kayak, with its all-in-one approach, integrates various travel services for a comprehensive search. It's your one-stop-shop for flights, accommodations, and car rentals.
Now, let's talk about the power of being in the know. If you're not subscribed to travel deal newsletters, you're missing out on a goldmine of discounts. Airlines and travel agencies often drop exclusive deals and promotions via email, available only to those in the inner circle.
Picture this: You wake up, grab your morning coffee, and there it is—a newsletter announcing a flash sale on flights to Europe. By subscribing to newsletters from your favorite travel companies, you position yourself at the front of the queue for these limited-time offers. It's like having a VIP pass to the hottest travel deals in town.
In the age of hashtags and influencers, social media is not just for sharing your brunch pics; it's a treasure trove of last-minute travel deals. Airlines, travel agencies, and even hotels often drop exclusive promotions on their social media platforms. So, if you're not already following your favorite travel brands, it's time to hit that "Follow" button.
Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook—these are your secret weapons. Flash sales, promo codes, and exclusive offers are often unveiled on social media first. Set up notifications, keep your eyes peeled for those #TravelTuesday deals, and be ready to pounce when opportunity knocks.
Flexibility is the cornerstone of successful last-minute travel. If your schedule allows it, embrace the beauty of flexible date searches. Many travel platforms offer the option to explore flight prices across a range of dates, helping you identify the sweet spot for the best deals.
Say goodbye to rigid itineraries. Embrace the freedom of flexible date searches, allowing you to discover the most budget-friendly days to jet off to Europe. It's a bit like playing the stock market, but instead of stocks, you're investing in experiences.
Now, let's talk about the VIP treatment. Loyalty programs and reward points are not just fancy terms thrown around by travel enthusiasts; they are your golden ticket to exclusive last-minute deals.
Thanks for visiting our blog, are you planing to travel to Europe? Check out our eSIM Portugal & Europe Sim Card .
If you've been diligently collecting those airline miles and hotel points, now is the time to cash in. Many loyalty programs offer special promotions and discounts for spontaneous travelers. It's like getting a discount on your favorite dessert just for being a regular at the pastry shop.
Researching Last-Minute Travel Deal Companies

Now, let's talk about the spirited traveler's haven—Travelocity. Known for its user-friendly interface and comprehensive search options, Travelocity is a go-to platform for those seeking last-minute travel deals to Europe.
Travelocity's last-minute offerings extend beyond flights, covering accommodations, vacation packages, and even car rentals. The platform's commitment to delivering real-time results ensures that you're not just browsing, but actively participating in the last-minute travel game.
If spontaneity had a digital face, it would be Booking.com. Known for its extensive range of accommodations, Booking.com is not just for long-term planners. The platform caters to the whims of last-minute travelers, offering a plethora of options for those seeking a spontaneous European adventure.
Navigate to Booking.com's last-minute deals section, and you'll be greeted by a mosaic of enticing options. Our last contender in the realm of last-minute travel deal companies is none other than Kayak. This all-encompassing platform integrates various travel services, providing a one-stop-shop for those looking to piece together a spontaneous European getaway.
Kayak's strength lies in its ability to streamline the booking process. From flights to accommodations and even rental cars, Kayak brings it all together in a neat package. The platform's commitment to transparency ensures that you're not just making a reservation; you're making an informed choice.
Pro Tips for Securing the Best Deals
Let's start with a little secret weapon—booking off-peak times. If you're willing to dance to a different beat and travel during non-peak seasons, you'll not only escape the crowds but also enjoy substantial cost savings.
Picture this: A quiet stroll through the streets of Paris without the summer hustle, or a leisurely exploration of Rome's iconic landmarks without the peak-season queues. Booking off-peak times not only ensures a more intimate travel experience but also opens the door to exclusive last-minute deals. It's like having the best seat in the house for a show everyone else is scrambling to attend.
Now, let's talk about the thrill of the chase—flash sales and limited-time offers. The world of last-minute travel is dynamic, and the savvy traveler knows that timing is everything. Keep a keen eye on flash sales and limited-time promotions to swoop in on deals that others might miss.
Follow your favorite airlines, travel agencies, and even hotels on social media. Set up notifications and be ready to pounce when that flash sale alert hits your inbox. These fleeting opportunities are like shooting stars; you have to catch them in the moment to make a wish, or in this case, book a dream trip at a dream price.
Now, let's talk about the magic of bundles. No, not the kind you find at the grocery store, but the ones that combine flights, accommodations, and sometimes even activities. Booking bundled deals can be a game-changer for last-minute travelers, offering convenience and often significant cost savings.
Imagine this: You book a last-minute flight, and voila, you're presented with curated accommodation options and perhaps a discounted city tour or museum pass. Bundled deals not only simplify the booking process but also ensure that every aspect of your trip aligns seamlessly. It's like ordering a combo meal, but instead of fries and a drink, you get a perfectly curated travel experience.
Ah, the fine print—a place where many travelers fear to tread. However, when it comes to last-minute travel, understanding and embracing cancellation policies is a crucial step in the game. While spontaneity is exhilarating, life is unpredictable, and plans might need to change.
Before you hit that "Book Now" button, take a moment to review the cancellation policies. Some deals might be non-refundable, while others offer a grace period. Understanding the rules of the game ensures that you're prepared for any curveballs life might throw your way. It's like having a safety net for your spontaneous acrobatics.
Last but not least, let's talk about the power in the palm of your hand—mobile apps. In the age of smartphones, having travel apps at your fingertips is a game-changer for last-minute adventurers. These apps not only make the booking process seamless but also offer additional features that enhance your overall travel experience. Before you take off make sure to check with local government of the travel status.
Whether it's receiving real-time flight updates, accessing exclusive app-only deals, or having your entire itinerary in one place, mobile apps are your digital travel companion. Consider downloading the apps of your preferred travel companies for a streamlined and stress-free last-minute travel experience.
Absolutely. Last-minute travel deals can be incredibly cost-effective, especially if you're open to flexibility with your travel dates and destinations. Airlines and accommodations often offer significant discounts to fill up remaining seats and rooms.
Quality is paramount, even in last-minute bookings. To ensure a comfortable stay, read reviews and ratings from fellow travelers. Stick to reputable booking platforms and consider well-known hotel chains for a higher level of reliability.
While it's more challenging, it's not impossible. Last-minute deals can still be found during peak seasons, especially if you're open to flexible dates and destinations. Keep an eye out for flash sales and promotions.
Like any adventure, last-minute travel has its risks. Limited choices and potential higher costs are among the challenges. However, strategic planning, flexibility, and thorough research can help mitigate these risks.
Absolutely. Many travel loyalty programs offer exclusive last-minute deals and allow you to use accumulated points for significant discounts on flights and accommodations. It's a rewarding way to make spontaneous travel even more budget-friendly.

Your Europe Vacation
Ancient history, to-die-for cuisine, and rich culture galore: There’s almost too much to choose when you’re building a multi country European vacation package. From the romance of Paris and Rome to edgier Berlin and London , Europe’s capitals are fascinating, with show-off sights and secret gems. Step away from urban life and discover the empty golden beaches of Greece or the fertile wine lands of Bordeaux . Come winter, there’s no place more magical than Europe. Ski the snow-covered, beer-filled Austrian Alps on a European ski vacation package, visit Santa at home in Lapland on a European family vacation package, or dip into the mulled wine and gingerbread magic of Europe’s Christmas markets to level up the romance. There’s so much to fit in—one trip is never enough.

Your European Vacation
Whether you’re into beaches, history, food or landscapes, this diverse continent has enough to keep you occupied for a lifetime. Read on for ideas about cheap vacation packages in Europe and get your passport ready.
Beachside Bliss
For many travelers, the perfect Europe vacation package revolves around sun, sea and sand. Get your fill on Spain ’s most famous beaches, from San Sebastian and the Costa del Sol on the mainland to the warm-year-round Canary Islands . In Greece , hop through some of its 6,000 islands such as Santorini and Mykonos or sail to dreamy hideaways like Karpathos . With 300 days of sunshine annually and around 125 miles of coastline, it’s no surprise that the Algarve in Portugal is among Europe’s top beach resort areas. Meanwhile the Italian island of Sardinia , famous for its iridescent waters and fine white sand, regularly tops polls of the world’s best beaches.
Culture & Sightseeing
Packed with culture and major attractions, Paris is always a good idea! Climb the Eiffel Tower , stare at the Mona Lisa in the Louvre and wander the streets of charming Montmartre . In Rome , you’ll come face to face with history at almost every turn. Check out the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain before exploring Italy ’s other wonders like the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Grand Canal of Venice . In Athens , walk around the ruins of the Acropolis and in London , see Big Ben and Buckingham Palace . The mysteries of Stonehenge are a day trip away. How about a Europe vacation package to Barcelona ? Here, be wowed by the architecture of Sagrada Familia and dance the flamenco. Olé!
Outdoor Adventures
What if mountains, fjordlands or forests are your idea of heaven? When it comes to nature, Iceland dazzles with its electric blue ice caps, black-sand beaches and vast lava fields. Take a dip in the Blue Lagoon and tick a must-do off the list. If skiing is your thing, head for the Swiss Alps to shred under the shadow of the mighty Matterhorn . In the Scottish Highlands , hike the rugged Isle of Skye and keep an eye out for the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) at Loch Ness lake. Scandinavia is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. Sail through the fjords of Norway , chase the northern lights in Finland and hike through lush forests around Stockholm , Sweden . Be sure to add some activities or experiences to your Europe vacation package for the ultimate adventure.
Vacations for Foodies
It’s time to eat your way through Europe! In Brussels , Belgium , chow down on moules-frites (mussels and French fries), Belgium chocolate and waffles and then wash it all down with a beer. Bring your appetite to the birthplace of pizza, Naples . Order a slice from a hole-in-the-wall restaurant to find out why it’s considered the world’s best. While you’ll no doubt think of wine when it comes to Bordeaux , this French culinary haven is also renowned for its oysters, foie gras and canelé pastries. Tapas, paella and churros dipped in chocolate are on the menu in Madrid , while Portugal’s capital Lisbon serves up delicacies from pastéis de Belém (custard tarts) to grilled sardines.
Europe Packages on a Budget
If you’re looking for cheap vacation packages in Europe , Budapest won’t break the budget. The Hungarian capital’s exceptional beauty and famous landmarks (like Buda Castle ) have earned it the nickname of the “Paris of the East.” In Slovenia , pristine nature full of mountains, rivers and caves await along with castles and museums. Want to do the Mediterranean on the cheap in Malta ? There are gorgeous beaches, charming villages and medieval fortified cities to explore. Sicily also serves up a stellar lineup of sights for less, from the Valley of the Temples in the Province of Agrigento to the volcanic Aeolian Islands .
Luxury Locations
With destinations like the Amalfi Coast to tempt you, a European vacation package is your opportunity to splurge. This stretch of Italian coastline is home to Mediterranean superstars like the cliffside village of Positano and Capri , where you’ll find the magical Blue Grotto . If the French Riviera is calling your name, say bonjour to the “billionaires’ playground” of Monaco . Hit the famous Monte Carlo Casino and maybe even cruise around on a luxury yacht. Glamorous Nice , Cannes and Saint-Tropez are just over the border in France . Ibiza is one of Spain’s most famous luxury destinations. Its crystal-clear waters, white sands and epic nightlife have long attracted celebrities and party-loving travelers.
Save on Europe Packages
Wherever you choose to go, you’ll save with Expedia’s cheap vacation packages to Europe . For example, discover the best of London or book a Rome package to marvel at the Vatican and Sistine Chapel . Wander around the Louvre Museum on a Paris vacation — alternatively, if Amsterdam is more your style, then book one of our bundles and you’ll be taking a private tour of the city and experiencing its world-famous nightlife soon enough. Europe vacation packages start at $1,465* and can save you heaps.
Flights, hotels and rental cars, or any combination of them — the choice is yours when it comes to creating your package. Prices depend on exactly what you bundle, and whether you add extras like tours and experiences. Other factors include the length of your trip, hotel rating, time of year you travel and where you’re flying from. You can unlock even more discounts on your European escape by simply booking your flight and hotel together, rather than booking separately. Europe package savings can add up to as much as 57%** . Still haven’t picked your destination? We recommend exploring unmissable Prague — where great package savings means more cash to spend on eating hearty pork knuckles and sightseeing at Prague Castle !
How to Plan Your Europe Vacation
Select one of our ready-made cheap packages to Europe or build your own customized trip – all you need to do is enter your desired destination and travel dates. Take your pick of hotels, resorts or vacation rentals, add flights and/or a car rental and get incredible prices. You can sort your results by price, amenities and more.
Wondering when to travel to Europe? Peak season is June, July and August. Expect sunny weather, long days and plenty of excitement, but also higher rates and large crowds. If you really want to save, consider the quieter months of April through mid-June, or September through October. The low season, November through March, is another option. While it may be cold, you’ll usually get the best hotel and airfare deals, not to mention fewer tourists.

Simply pick one of our awesome properties and you’ll get food, drinks and activities included in the price. Check out our all-inclusive stays in Europe for the ultimate stress-free vacation!

Before You Go
- To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
- Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
- Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
- Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
- If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

3. Secret Flying
You can get alerts when fares go down when you sign up at Secret Flying , or, use their search tool to find great last minute deals on flights. Simply input your departure city, keep the arrival as “anywhere” and put the current month as the time you are looking to fly. Perfect for when you just want to get away, but you don’t care where to. Secret Flying also finds “mistake” fares, so be sure to sign up to get notifications so you can book them before they are gone!

The app allows travelers to book same-day accommodations across the globe at discounts of up to 50 percent. If you don’t want to leave things until the literal last minute, though, the app also lets you book dates a little further out. The well-designed booking engine serves up clever recommendations and insider info—plus those remarkable markdowns. Keep an eye out for the Daily Drop, the biggest discount of the day (which you only have 15 minutes to book).
The site is known for discounted restaurant meals, fitness classes, and beauty services also has a last minute deals section that typically includes discounted hotel and resort stays. On the day I checked, options ranged from a $69 hotel near Niagara Falls to a four-star Times Square hotel for $77 a night.
3. Trip.com
Trip.com is your basic hotel booking site, and is great for finding a last minute deal. While they feature hotels all around the world, it’s particularly great for deals on hotels in Asia, so when you grab an amazing last minute flight to somewhere in Asia, head to trip.com to book your hotel!
4. Last Minute Travel
As its name suggests, Last Minute Travel is dedicated solely to last minute travel deals. This wide-ranging site offers bargains on hotels, car rentals, cruises, transfers, and activities. The site has a Last Minute Travel Club for deeper discounts and rewards points to use toward free hotel stays. Membership is $50 per year.

W ith spring in the air and summer just on the horizon, many will be starting the search for suitably affordable last-minute trips abroad.
But organising a holiday at short notice is often easier said than done, whether it’s a spontaneous couples’ getaway or last-minute break with friends and family. The excitement of researching a destination can quickly dissipate once the slog of trawling travel agent, airline and tour operator websites has begun. The good news is that, whether you want to jump across the Channel to see the Eiffel Tower or head long-haul to the beaches of Cancun, there are hundreds of online options to help you find the best deals for booking transport, places to stay and other extras.
Instead of spending hours on dozens of different websites, check out this list we’ve compiled of some of the best in the travel marketplace. You’ll save time on the research and money on the holiday too – what’s not to like?

What Summer Travel to Europe Will Look Like This Year

With additional reporting by Sarah Allard
When travel journalist Jenn Rice decided to spend July and August in Italy and Croatia last year, she wasn’t expecting to be spending most of her time indoors. “It was very very hot, so I booked museum tickets during peak days or just lounged around in my room with a spritz and a book until the sun set.” In Dubrovnik she tried escaping to the sea for a cool dip, but everyone else had the same idea—resulting in sweaty, overcrowded beaches. “In Rome , gelato melted faster than the speed of light,” she says.
Come summer, major attractions like the Spanish Steps in Rome are thronged by international tourists and vacationing Europeans.
Rome and Dubrovnik weren’t the only European destinations overcome with heat. To travel in Europe in the summer of 2023 was to experience first-hand a single season of contrasting extremes. Temperatures swung from hot and dry to cold and wet, and heatwaves broke out across several of the most heavily touristed destinations, with temperatures reaching upwards of 100°F. In Northern Greece, wildfires broke out —the worst experienced there in 20 years —destroying homes, forests, and vineyards.
Yet in the midst of it all, the continent also saw record-breaking tourist numbers —the highest since pre-pandemic levels—even as hotel prices swelled and airfares hit peaks. From scenic escapes like Bellagio in Como and Taormina in Sicily (where the White Lotus effect was on full display) to bucket-list cities like Paris and Madrid , much of touristed Europe was completely overwhelmed.
“We had people calling us from Athens and Rome asking us to get them out [to somewhere cooler in Europe], because it was too hot and too crowded,” recalls Jan Sortland , founder of Scandinavia specialists Norwegian Adventures.
International tourists weren’t the only ones thronging these spots. According to the European Travel Commission , most Europeans took their vacations before the peak month of August, with Italy and France being their top destinations. This resulted in packed crowds at all the major attractions. For John Canning, an LA-based executive who traveled to Paris in July, the crowds were eye-opening. “We didn’t anticipate that everything we would want to see was sold out. We only got Musée d’Orsay tickets through our concierge at a substantial premium and could not get into the Louvre full stop,” he says.
Rice says the summer taught her to plan her travel differently this year—and beyond: “I’m going to try and do coastal Italy early in May, and if I decide to travel in Europe this summer it will be either Asturias in Northern Spain or the Julian Alps in Slovenia to keep cool."
She’s not alone—according to the travel specialists we spoke with, there’s an increased interest in lesser-known destinations offering a more laid back (and cooler) holiday. “Our guests are asking after places where they can be outdoors, yet have access to wine & foodie experiences and culture. Slovenia is a great example of where you can have all that without being overwhelmed with the heat; the Dolomites in Italy is another,” says Rachael Mendizabal, Europe travel specialist at Scott Dunn . Richard Hyde, COO at Small Luxury Hotels of the World , is seeing similar trends across their European portfolio: “Guests seem to be gravitating towards alternative destinations—Milos instead of Mykonos and Slovenia instead of Spain.”
Norway is a popular destination this summer, offering cooler weather and a myriad ways to be active outside, exploring the islands and fjords.
A big part of that shift will play into Sortland’s area of expertise: Northern Europe. With the Med getting too hot to handle, experts predict that tourism will shift northwards. “We’re seeing a lot of interest in Copenhagen and Stockholm for the cultural experience, and then onward to Norway for the nature. Currently, the fjords are still a favorite but Norway is a large country and there’s so much more to see—the Helgeland coast for example with its beautiful coastline and mountainous islands,” he says. The draw is a more moderate temperature and unique outdoor experiences. “ Iceland is a big favorite right now with the Northern lights being the most active this year from September through March,” says Mendizabal.

In turn, for many, the more standard city breaks will fall later in the year. “Athens and Rome will always be desirable destinations, but we’ve seen an uptick in many people preferring to go there in May and October to swerve crowds,” says Carolyn Addison, head of product at Black Tomato , noting the weather in fall has been stable lately and enticing to travelers not tied to school holidays.
With this increased flexibility, shoulder season will become tricker to define, according to Mendizabal. Thanks to hotels extending their season as demand shifts to almost year-round and the high-season pricing window getting longer, the days of “scooping a deal in September are likely over.” At Jumeirah Palace in Capri , the season now runs from March to the end of December. “Thanks to the good weather, guests are staying longer than in the past,” says Ermanno Zanini, regional vice president at Jumeirah Group, Southern Europe and United Kingdom.
Castello di Vicarello in Tuscany 's Maremma countryside has traditionally stayed open in March and November. “We're pushing the low season as much as possible because we truly believe it is a wonderful time to discover Tuscany. There is so much for guests to enjoy from hiking to mountain biking, truffle hunting, and wine tastings,” says owner Neri Baccheschi Berti.
Crucially, traveling in the shoulder and off seasons isn't just about avoiding the crowds; it’s knowing that seasonal destinations are multi-dimensional, with year-round appeal. “One of my favorite things to do in cooler weather is to hike to the peak of Mount Solaro, with its beautiful views of the town of Capri and the bay of Marina Piccola with the Faraglioni, as well as Anacapri. You also see plenty of wintering birds on the island,” says Zanini.
Zanini adds that they are in talks with the island's municipality to consider what it would take to stay open in February and March, traditionally strictly closed off. “It's not as straightforward as you think. There’s a lot of infrastructure that needs to be geared towards the low season: restaurants need to stay open, as do shops, and guides need to be available; it can’t just be the hotel,” he adds.
However, with staying open longer, there’s a real opportunity to engage local communities year-round, not to mention stabilize the hiring pool—and improve work culture. “We’ve already seen the positive impact of a longer season for our partners on the ground and locals in the hospitality and tourism sector,” says Addison, who adds that shifts in travel seasons are far from a fleeting trend. “This pattern for more year-round travel will continue to pick up pace in 2025—and beyond," she says.
Travel specialists are quick to point out that even with some of this rebalancing, summer this year and next will continue to see high demand for travel to—and within—Europe. According to Hayley Berg, chief economist at Hopper, while airfare remains higher than at this time in 2019, 40% of all searches for international trips this summer are to Europe, in line with last year and slightly higher than in 2019.
“Sure, we think that traveler numbers on the Côte d'Azur will smooth out through the year, but summer will certainly remain the festive season—only it will be longer,” says Lucie Weill, owner of wellness retreat Lily of the Valley near St. Tropez , which sees its faire share of packed streets and crowded beaches come summer. Weill adds that the hotel has seen success in extending its season.
For travel specialist Cari Gray of Gray & Co . late requests and a lack of flexibility could mean getting turned away because of a lack of availability. “Whether it’s a visit to the Vatican or dogsledding in Alaska , access is going to be very difficult. And there are only that many high-end lodges in Lapland ,” she says. Addison offers the example of Lake Como , where the best properties can often get booked up a year or two in advance during the busiest summer months. “Knowing that the top hotels and guides are getting booked up and that weather disruptions are increasingly unpredictable, clients who want to commit to the most popular summer hotspots in Europe, like the Greek islands and Sardinia are securing their bookings a year out.”
The Balearic island of Menorca is a charming escape with its rocky coves, white-sand beaches, and green rolling hills.
Ultimately, it’s not about giving up on all the places you love: just about pivoting, even if within the same country. “Why not Menorca instead of Mallorca, with its explosion of fantastic hotels and its great beach front, or Epirus in Northern Greece on the Albanian border with its Stone villages, old-growth forests, and truffle hunts instead of the islands," says Gray.
"In Italy we’re always pushing to discover new areas, even in regions that we’ve been exploring for decades like Tuscany and Umbria because new hotels are opening up regularly,” says Courtney Mundy , a travel specialist at experiential travel experts Butterfield & Robinson.
And, a word of caution for the rising favorites: “Smaller destinations in Iceland & Norway will really need to consider how to manage the higher number of visitors than ever before,” says Addison. “Parts of Iceland are overtouristed,” agrees Sortland, “so, it’s not unreasonable to think that smaller communities in Norway could eventually be at risk, too.” Whether it's through new tourist tax regimens or limits on cruise ship day-trippers to reduce crowding, a shifting tide will need more alert local governments—and as we’re swapping beaches for the mountains or Rome for Stockholm, more responsible travel habits that leave fewer traces behind.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.
By Aliza Chasan
Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News
A total solar eclipse crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show where and when astronomy fans could see the big event as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.
The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.
About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.
Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024
The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.
The path of totality included portions of the following states:
- Pennsylvania
- New Hampshire
Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.
Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :
- San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
- Austin, Texas
- Waco, Texas
- Dallas, Texas
- Little Rock, Arkansas
- Indianapolis, Indiana
- Dayton, Ohio
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Buffalo, New York
- Rochester, New York
- Syracuse, New York
- Burlington, Vermont
Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path
The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.
NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also checked their ZIP code on NASA's map to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.
How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?
While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.
NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

The crew was fabulous, outstanding, friendly, attentive and just great, really made my flight one of the best I've ever had, thank you southwest crew flight #474, from Los Angeles to San Francisco on April 2,2024
Luggage was intact and arrived at the destination. What more could you ask for.. haha. The delay in arrival wasn’t SW fault.. just selfish passengers not wanting to check their luggage knowing they were in the last boarding groups
Friendly and efficient service. On time departure and earlier arrival.
No problems with the flight, my issue is with the terminal at SAN airport. I’ve never seen a dirtier, worse equipped terminal. No power plugs worked, but you could of course buy a fuel rod battery from the kiosk (seemingly the only thing that worked).
Flight was delayed for 1 hour. Otherwise it was a fairly normal Southwest experience
Flight was on time. Friendly staff and flight was smooth. We Love Southwest.
Main flight attendant made light of the delay and presented some humor to lighten the tempestuous situation. Delayed flight took off 2 hours after scheduled time.
The plane smelled musky and some passenger would coughing without covering their mouths or were not wearing a mask to stop spreading their germs.. yucky
Internet only worked half the trip Drink was flat Staff was great
As usual was very late. This has become a norm in southwest tobhave every flight very late
Excellent service and prices. I was not award of inflight entertainment.
They gave me a seat with extra leg room. But they didn't offer me anything to drink, just because it was an hour flight
This was a short flight with many open seats. Overhead space is limited and there are no screens in the seat back. But overall the flight was comfortable and fast.
I was happy with the flight. It was too short for food and beverage service. (no problem) We left SLO on time and arrived in San Diego on schedule.
Alaska airlines is the best. Best customer service, crew, and value for money.
The reduced size overhead compartments were a surprise. They keep getting smaller and smaller while amenities keep getting fewer.
My flight was on schedule, ground crew looks overworked, flight crew was great but refreshments could be better. The plane was clean and fairly new. Seats were comfortable but leg room was tight.
I arrived at 7:15 for an 8:30am flight. The winds in Burbank were keeping all flights down for the morning. What ensued next was absolute chaos, poor communication and chaos. I had booked a flight last minute because my boyfriends father was dying and o needed to be there immediately. There was absolutely no consideration for communication about what was happening with our flight after there was discovered to be a mechanical error. There was no mention that vouchers had been sent by email For food and I ended up wasting money on my lunch that was horrible. I literally bought the food when I had been emailed about a voucher. . I sat there now at 1:45 and tried to get some answers because the time was ticking. Your lady was so helpful and rushed me to get a flight out of United. I showed up to sfo 6+ hours late and was able to say goodbye to his father. But it was just a horribly communicated day. Please do better
I have taken 4 Alaska flights in the past 3 weeks and every single flight was delayed. They give you a $12 voucher for airport food, sometimes too late, after you’ve already eaten. That might get you a bagel. Reservations, rentals, etc have to be cancelled with no repercussions. Will be avoiding Alaska if possible.
Both of my flights were delayed. This is the 2nd week in a row that Alaska has been delayed. Not a great experience.
Flight was on time. The crew was efficient and kind.
Did not like the fact that I was charged to take on a bag I usually put in the overhead
My flight was delayed, not by much.?very good communication during fest and waiting to board.
Communication with airline electronically was difficult. No number seemed available to talk to customer service.
What could have been better is if Discover credit card would be able to purchase food
Crew was inconsistent in instructions in advising passengers about seat backs during take off. Perfunctory announcements except from cabin.
The experience with Breeze was really great. The app makes managing flights easy. You can check in on there 24 hours in advance, and your boarding pass is there, too. The flight crew and the staff at both our airports were wonderful. Snacks and drinks were reasonably priced. The seats were very comfortable, they even had adjustable headrests on every seat. The only downside is not having entertainment or Wi-Fi available onboard.
The price is amazing. I was worried about how the flight would be as I never flew then. Seats were very comfortable. We had lots of legroom. The Akron airport was really nice. Overall it didn't have the stress we usually experience with flying. Highly recommend
Flight delayed and moved to another gate. Got a text message updating the gate as final boarding finished. Missed flight, fighting for my refund
Prior to boarding we were told the flight was still on time up until about 20 minutes after the scheduled departure time. Details on the new departure time and gate were not provided to us in a timely fashion and we were lead to board a flight to Pittsburgh only to realized upon scanning my boarding pass that it was the wrong flight when signage at the gate said Providence. However, once on board the plane was comfortable and staff courteous and nice.
I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX
Great experience overall. Check in at Austin was congested as they only have about 6 check in kiosks, one was broken, and there was a lot of Spring Break travelers.
Bag drop off was slow and annoying. Only 2 agents at the entire delta desk, and no one directing traffic for what line to be in, many confused people slowed down the process. Boarding was fine. Seats in Delta comfort plus were fine. Snacks were great! Definitely a bonus. The entertainment system was awful — old, slow, not responsive, and completely unable to play games due to some kind of error. But on the other hand, thank you to Delta for the free WiFi. That made it better.
Everything was very good other than I had selected a specific seat when I booked the flight and they changed it once I checked-in the day before my flight. I was still in first class but lost my aisle seat for a window seat. Being tall, the aisle offers more comfort so I always select an aisle seat.
Flight diverted in SD. Later take off in Seattle by 1.3hrs
Crew was not friendly when I went to request a seat change.
Really impressive staff at airport and on plane, especially given how busy it was
Was a great smooth flight from Detroit to San Diego.
The boarding process was terrible especially with an indirect flight Chicago to Seattle to San Diego was terrible talking about we overbooked a flight idk if I’d take this airline ever again we got off our flight from Chicago to Seattle and we traveled for business and they told us our connecting flight was over booked and their was no seats asking people to take a delayed next flight and they don’t tell anyone coughing to wear masks seats 30A-B were terrible during the flight no one wants to sit next to people coughing all around I don’t want to be sick traveling for work or get sick anytime it’s very upsetting the staff doesn’t take this stuff serious to tell them to wear masks when they see people coughing and sneezing
Crew was great. However the seat I had would not recline and stay put. It would spring back to upright. Hopefully they can check the seats and maintain them. Otherwise the plane is clean and the crew is very friendly.
Didn’t make the connecting flight due to a delay on our first flight.
The text told me it was changed to Terminal E and Gate D5. But with no one on site to ask questions there was confusion on where to go as all the gates were E's. Then we took the skyline to the D area. We left to get something to eat. No announcement was made but my daughter happened to asked and they told her our gate was moved to D12. I will not fly Spirit again.
The agent at the check in desk was absolutely rude. The rest of the team after that was good, but the check in process at LAS was miserable. The woman at the desk spoke like we were stupid and was rude throughout the process.
Its so random that they only allow 40 pounds on checked bags when all airlines take 55. They then charge you for each 10 extra pounds, so my checked suitcase was $130 and the flight $30 ... its like whattt, im for sure not traveling with Spirit again
Overall good service and good flight. Flights were quick and early.
So bad. The check in process was laborious and the check in agent didn't seem to know how to manage the process efficiently and was confused about how to check in my son's sports equipment. The baggage fees were outrageous and so expensive. $90 for a carry on bag? And $200 additional for 2 check ins. The security lines were insanely long and the terminal was not very nice in the Spirit area. $5 for a water on board. It was my first and last time flying Spirit - I tried to save $ by flying them due to the accommodating schedule but I should have paid for Southwest, because it would've actually ended up less expensive due to the free bags with Southwest. There were no charging ports on the airplane, no wifi and really uncomfortable seating. The flight crew were great though, courteous and efficient in their boarding. Flight was delayed 1 hour, but we made up 15 minutes in flight.
My experience was better than expected. What I did find not so great was the seats. Very little room, they did not recline and the tray table was the size of a post card. There was no food to try, just standard snacks that you had to pay for and I don’t know of any entertainment. I would fly again even though everything was an upcharge. Flight was on time with little disturbance
I was not told that I could not have a carry-on. Then I was charged $99 to bring my bag on. The same bag that is free to have on other flights. Overhead compartments were not even full. There were not even free drinks on board. This is the chintziest airline ever and I will never fly it again. Cheap in quality and they trick you into added fees that you don't realize until it's too late.
thy don't even ofer water we have to buy it for $4.49 and paid for our cary on bags $100 each we never will fly in this company again.
Super cool and laid back, three lovely ladies. Couldn’t ask for better service.
