There are so many amazing online options when it comes to zoos that we couldn’t narrow it down to just one. Most zoos have live webcams in some of their most popular exhibits, such as the KC Zoo Polar Bear Cam and the Giant Panda Cam at Smithsonian’s National Zoo . However, some zoos offer a more in-depth look. You’ll definitely want to check out the San Diego Zoo as their site for kids includes behind-the-scenes videos and stories, as well as a variety of printable activities and online games. Check out our full list of virtual zoo goodness.

3. The Aquarium

It’s a similar story with aquariums. You have your pick of live webcams, but our favorites are the Georgia Aquarium’s Ocean Voyager webcam (wait for the whale shark!) and the “Jelly Cam” at Monterey Bay Aquarium (so soothing). The Seattle Aquarium even has a 30-minute video tour . Want more under-the-sea fun? Here’s our ultimate list of virtual aquarium field trips.

6 Free Resources for Virtual Field Trips

Teachers can use panoramic photos and videos of locations all around the world to make lessons more engaging.

Teacher projects an image of the Louvre museum

How can you take students around the world without moving very far? If you haven’t yet, it’s worth trying virtual field trips and excursions. Now more than ever, these resources allow students to experience spaces they might not otherwise get to see, and there are many ways to introduce them to students as they explore a topic.

Virtual field trips can help students explore a new space, build vocabulary and background knowledge, and expand their world view. Whether you want to explore the setting of a novel, introduce a place-based math problem, or make connections to current events, virtual field trips can expand upon traditional lessons in many ways. One of the reasons I love them so much is that they allow students to view a space that piques their curiosity and provides context for their learning.

The term virtual field trip can be used to describe not just 360 degree photos and videos but also the live interactions and video conferences you might set up with a subject matter expert like an author or museum docent. Flipgrid (one of my favorite tools) hosts a handful of these types of virtual field trips .

6 Ways to Set Up Virtual Field Trips

The list of free virtual field trip resources here is adapted from my ISTE Live presentation in December 2020. Students can access these resources without logging into a new website—teachers can post the link to a 360 degree panoramic image or interactive experience in a platform students already use, making it easy for them to access in both traditional classroom settings and at home.

1. AirPano : This site includes 360 degree videos and images from around the world. You aren’t required to create an account—you can just jump in and start searching. When you’re ready to share with students, there is a link you can copy and paste or an embed option if you’re adding a widget to a site of resources. If you’re looking for international locations, AirPano is a great choice for exploring outdoor spaces, including Machu Picchu in the daytime, or the northern lights at night.

2. Google Maps Treks : In combination with Google Maps and Earth, Treks organizes content in an easy-to-navigate way. There are Treks for places around the globe, including the U.S. and Canada, Egypt, Nepal, and India. Each one has information and videos for students to explore.

3. National Geographic : National Geographic’s YouTube channel transports students all over the world to learn about different cultures, foods, animals, and more. Have students press play on the video, and as the video begins, they can use their cursor or trackpad to spin the video in different directions. They can tap on one part of the screen to move the video back and forth as they learn about a new place.

4. Nearpod : Known as an interactive presentation tool, Nearpod has virtual reality content built into its platform in the form of 360 degree panoramic views, which can be used as a great pre-reading strategy to introduce a new book or spark discussion about a social studies or science topic. To use these interactive experiences with your students, insert them into any Nearpod lesson in the same way you would add a slide or poll. (Please note: Nearpod also offers a paid plan with additional amenities.)

5. 360Cities : This collection of stock 360 degree images has lots of user-uploaded resources. There is a special school version that allows you to introduce students to more dynamic learning experiences; it has features such as a guided tour creator.

6. Google Arts and Culture :  This tool has a variety of high-quality content, including interactive views that let students walk through notable spaces such as museums and explore examples of beautiful architecture like the Alhambra in Spain. You can let students know that this resource is mobile-responsive in addition to working on a web browser—they can access the content on a smartphone or tablet, or their Chromebook or laptop.

Engaging Students With Guided Questions

Set a purpose for students as they explore these resources by using prompts to guide their excursions. Potential prompts include:

  • What do you think the weather is like in this place?
  • How do you think someone captured this moment?
  • What might be missing from this shot?

I’ve put together more prompts here .

If building student vocabulary is a primary goal of introducing virtual field trips to your students, you can point out different objects in the panoramic views or ask students to find certain features. For example, imagine students are learning about geological features and you take them on a virtual field trip to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Together you can discuss vocabulary like crater , steam vent , and igneous rocks .

When sharing with students, include a prompt or question and post the link and task into a space they already have access to, such as Google Classroom, Seesaw, or Schoology. If you’re sharing a list of resources for students, colleagues, or families that includes some of these virtual excursions, you might curate a list of favorites using a tool like Google Sites, Spark Page, or Microsoft Sway.

What is a virtual tour and how does it work?

Technology powering virtual field trips for students, 22 best virtual field trips for students, how to incorporate virtual tours into learning activities.

Imagine taking your entire class to see one of the seven wonders of the world up close and personal — and then being back at school before the final bell rings.

The rise of online learning activities during the pandemic accelerated the availability of virtual field trips , tours and experiences for students of all ages. Now there are many interactive virtual tours available to places that would be impossible to reach on a class trip — the pyramids in Egypt, the Louvre museum in Paris or even an African safari.

We put together a list of 22 unforgettable virtual field trips and experiences that will help your students see amazing sights, connect their learning to real-world experiences and expand their horizons.

Virtual tours allow students to explore noteworthy places around the world, from the comfort of their home or the classroom.

Virtual tours give students the opportunity to stop, explore and guide learning at their own pace. While they’re exploring, they can get up close to nature or artifacts that might not otherwise be easily accessible.

Virtual tours can be many different things, including:

  • A live webcam of a zoo or animal habitat
  • A 360 degree view of a location you can manipulate
  • Pictures enriched with helpful information and diagrams

Even ten or fifteen years ago, video tours would have been rare or impossible. Advancements in technology and education have combined to help people learn and explore from anywhere!

  • National Geographic creates TV series about nature, history and archaeology
  • Food shows like Netflix’s Salt Fat Acid Heat take viewers on food journeys across the world
  • Planet Earth , a television series, brings far-flung locations to your living room or classroom
  • Discovery Education gives educators access to multimedia resources that supplement classroom learning
  • Video conferencing technology like Zoom lets you connect with people and learning experiences around the world

We love being able to sit at home or in the classroom and learn about different foods, cultures and geography. Why not introduce that to your students?

1. Take a trip to the zoo

Two zebras in a zoo

Whether it’s live webcams of adorable pandas or behind-the-scenes tours with zookeepers, zoos all over the world offer ways for animal antics to delight and entertain your students.

Some of our favorites include:

  • Edinburgh Zoo’s Panda Cam
  • Georgia Aquarium’s Beluga Whale Livestream
  • The Smithsonian National Zoo’s Naked Mole-rat Cam
  • A live feed of African river wildlife in Laikipia County, Kenya
  • The San Diego Zoo Live Ape Cam , or any of their other live animal feeds
  • Home Safari videos from the Cincinnati Zoo, where zookeepers introduce you to the hundreds of animals that make the zoo their home.

2. Visit The Hidden Worlds of National Parks

Take a virtual field trip to Yosemite National Park.

From Yosemite to Mesa Verde, explore some of the USA’s most beloved and beautiful national parks with The Hidden World of National Parks .

Supported by Google Arts & Culture , students can use the same technology that powers Street View to explore the national parks at their own pace.

The program also includes guided tours from park rangers, where they share their expertise as you explore. Follow the on-screen prompts and let them guide your adventure!

3. Watch the Monterey Bay Aquarium Sea Otters

5 Fun Field Trip Ideas for Elementary School

  • Classroom Organization
  • Reading Strategies
  • Becoming A Teacher
  • Assessments & Tests
  • Secondary Education
  • Special Education
  • Homeschooling
  • M.S., Education, Buffalo State College
  • B.S., Education, Buffalo State College

Field trips are a wonderful way for children to connect what they are learning in class to the outside world. For instance, if you are teaching your students about dinosaurs, the best way to wrap up the unit is to bring the class on a field trip to your local dinosaur exhibit at the museum. This way they can get a hands-on view of everything they learned and help them connect what they learned to what they are seeing at the exhibit.

Here are 5 fun and exciting educational field trip ideas for your elementary school class.

Post Office

A field trip to your local Post Office is a great way for students to compare the history of the postal service with the technology they use today. Students will leave the Post Office with a better understanding of how the mail connects everyone in the world.

Pick Your Own Farms

A unique field trip idea is to take students on a trip to pick their own fruits and vegetables. Children will be exposed to agricultural topics and experience nature and how food grows. A hands-on trip to your local farm is the perfect way to end your nutrition unit.

What child isn't fascinated with money? If you want to see your students participate in class and really be engaged, then take them on a field trip to your local bank. Children are always asking, "Why do I have to learn math?" and "When I am really going to use these math skills?" Well, a trip to the bank will show your students how the math skills they are learning in school can be applied to everyday life when they grow up. Bank tellers can show students how to write a personal check and withdrawal slips, and how to open a bank account and use a debit card. The information they learn on this trip will help them realize how important paying attention in math really is. A fun idea beforehand is to teach students about PayPal and how with technology today you can send money online.

Grocery Store

With the child obesity rate as high as it is today, the local grocery store is a great place for a field trip. There are a variety of topics that can be focused on at the grocery store, like nutrition, math, health and wellness, and home economics. Children can learn about healthy food choices and go on a food scavenger hunt. They can study measurements and, on the day of the trip, buy appropriate ingredients for a specific recipe you give them. They can learn how to budget their money, group foods into food groups, and learn important life skills.

Amusement Park

How is a field trip to an amusement park educational? Students can determine the speed of roller-coasters or see behind the scenes of how a stage show works. Students can learn about the animals in the on-site zoo, or see how the actors transform into characters. A field trip to an amusement park can take some of the concepts students are learning in school into a real-world experience.

Additional Field Trip Ideas Worth Considering

Here are a few more field trip ideas that are worth thinking about it. Any of the following ideas would make for a perfect field trip with your students:

  • Skating Rink
  • Local Hospital
  • Botanical Gardens
  • Soup Kitchen
  • Local Festival
  • Nursing Home
  • Local Monument
  • Farmer's Market

Free Virtual Field Trips For Elementary Students

A couple of years ago, my district did away with out-of-county field trips because of high gas prices. Then they cut back on field trips even further because they had to align directly with the standards. So this year I've been looking at virtual field trips. No, there isn't a bumpy bus ride or parents coming along as chaperones; but it can still be a lot of fun.

Ideas to Make Virtual Field Trips Fun and Exciting:

Let students bring a brown bag lunch and eat outside

Take lots of pictures just like you would on a real field trip

Have students keep a journal where they write ideas, feelings, and things they learned during your virtual visit.

Link up with another class from the location of your virtual trip. Exchange letters or post cards beforehand. Get your class excited about "visiting" their town.

So where can you go on your virtual field trip? Visit a rain forest or the desert. Check out an amazing zoo or museum. See beaches or mountains or even a volcano. How about watching an orchestra perform or strolling the streets in a historic town? There are so many sites you can visit online. Just project the video or online tour so everyone can see.

Here are some of the best places to find interactive virtual tours and field trips for elementary students:

The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

One of the best virtual field trips, in my opinion, is this amazing interactive tour of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. There are so many different exhibits to see that you can easily work this virtual trip into your lesson plans, no matter what science topic you are currently teaching.

virtual field trip smithsonian institute

On this tour, you can wander through every exhibit on all three floors. You can also go outside and view the gardens. As you work your way through the museum, you can zoom in to read all of the placards and signs. One nice feature is the interactive map that lets you easily jump from one room to another.

There are little camera icons called hotspots that you can click on to see something in greater detail. The best part of the tour is the 360 degree viewing capability. By dragging the screen with your mouse, you can view the entire room - even the floor or ceiling. Another great feature is the ability to visit past exhibits that are no longer on display.

I suggest starting the tour together as a whole group and then letting students have an opportunity to explore the museum themselves on tablets or computers. You could even send them on a scavenger hunt to find certain things or bits of information. Each wing and room of the museum is marked which makes it easy for students to record where something is located.

Visit the National Parks

The National Park Service maintains a fairly large list of parks that you can visit online. Some of them are photo tours and some are virtual video tours. These are great because you can combine social studies (geography) with science (plants and animal life, nature conservancy). Some of the best tours include:

Grand Canyon National Park

Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

Homestead National Monument of America

Death Valley Explorer video series

Mount Rushmore

To find these, and many more, you'll need to click to expand the section that says "Featured Video and Photo Tours".

national parks service virtual field trips

Also, be sure to check out the "Kids Activities" section where you can find more classroom activities for elementary aged students. You can see the full list of park tours on the National Park Service website .

Visit Space

One of the most interesting virtual tours is of the International Space Station. Both NASA and the European Space Agency offer tours. NASA's is video based and it's the next best thing to taking your students on a real space exploration. The ESA's tour is a 360 degree walkthrough that lets students get an up-close look at all of the equipment and compartments.

Or take students Behind the Scenes at Johnson Space Center

One of my favorite virtual field trips for grades 4 and up is the interactive Space Innovation Tour . Students can take the tour through Kahoot! either as a whole class activity or individually. There is also a teacher guide and worksheets you can download to go along with it.

This virtual field trip takes about an hour to complete and your students will be engaged the entire time!

There’s no question about it: students love field trips! Field trips are an exciting and unique way to get students out of the classroom and into the “real world” during the school year. Some of your best memories from your own school days might be the awesome field trips you and your classmates took. Are you looking for fun and educational field trip ideas to inspire students of all ages? Maybe you’re stumped on where to take older students or brainstorming homeschool field trips. Whether you’re teaching elementary, middle, or high school students, look no further than these great ideas for field trips!

Visit a Museum

Museums are time-honored field trip destinations for a good reason! They provide entertaining and educational talking points for classes of all ages and are already created to appeal to younger and older students alike. Check out these kinds of museums.

  • Art museums
  • Science museums (don’t skip the planetarium!)
  • Maritime museums
  • Archaeology museums
  • Historic house/building museums
  • Cemetery or gravesite museums
  • Technology museums

Enjoy Nature

The natural world is an invaluable learning resource and a source of countless field trip ideas! These nature-based field trip ideas will be sure to keep your students entertained.

National or state parks

Go for a hike or tour the visitor’s center at your local state or national park. Supporting the national parks system helps it stay beautiful for years to come! You can integrate geography, biology, history, geology, and more into your visit.

Botanical gardens

Botanical gardens are beautiful and a great place to talk about science and art. You can even have your students do a photography project!

Sculpture gardens

While sculpture gardens are technically more art than nature, they are another fabulous field trip idea. Some are even interactive or encourage touching the art!

Meet the Animals

Whether you’re wrangling 35 middle school students or you’re a parent teaching homeschooled kids, you’d have a hard time finding a student without a favorite animal, and chances are they’ll see that animal when you visit one of these destinations!

Zoos or conservation centers

The zoo is another field trip idea that has stood the test of time. Many zoos offer group or student discounts and include built-in activities for your visit, such as scavenger hunts or guided tours.

Farms are not only a place to visit animals but also a chance to talk about history, biology, and even economics. Plus, you can never go wrong by supporting your local farmers!

If you asked students their favorite field trip idea on this list, many would vote for a visit to the aquarium! Aquariums engage students of all ages while providing helpful information about the natural world.

Fish hatcheries

A fish hatchery might not be the first location that comes to mind when you think about entertaining your students, but it’s actually a great field trip idea. Fish hatcheries are full of interesting information, often offer tours, and can provide a wealth of knowledge on your local region’s waterways.

Watch a Show

Taking your students to a show serves as a jumping-off point for conversations about literature, art, theater, music, and everything else under the sun. It also makes an ideal rainy-day trip as your students will stay safe and dry. These and more performances make great learning experiences for your students.

  • Theater productions
  • Acrobatic performances
  • Magic shows
  • Presentations (think TED Talks!)
  • Book talks or poetry readings

Get Patriotic

The United States has many unique characteristics that you can talk about while teaching anything from history to archaeology to government. Visit these uniquely American destinations!

Capital buildings

Whether you visit your state capital or the nation’s capital in Washington, DC, there’s always something to learn about American history when you visit its source!

Historical sites

You don’t have to go to a museum to see historical artifacts and buildings — some of them are in your own backyard! Check out historical sites near you and see if any offer tours.

Post offices

The United States Postal Service is a venerable and uniquely American institution that’s been around for hundreds of years, and your students can learn about anything from history to commerce to government by taking a post office tour! Many post offices will be glad to help you arrange a visit with your students.

Teaching the value of ecological preservation? It’s always a good lesson for students to learn their impact on the world around them. Try these field trip ideas for a greener world:

  • A recycling center
  • An alternative energy plant
  • The local landfill or garbage processing facility
  • An ecological cleanup site (can also serve as an opportunity for volunteer work!)

Explore the Working World

It’s never too early to talk to your students about the future, which means career-based field trip ideas are always on the table. Explore the working world when you visit these destinations.

  • TV stations
  • Manufacturing plants or factories
  • Science labs
  • Technology companies
  • Courthouses
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Food production facilities
  • Colleges or universities

Reward Your Students

While field trips are about having fun as much as they’re about an educational experience, some field trips serve more to reward your students for their hard work at the end of the school year or after a particularly hard quarter or semester. Sometimes you can even sneak in a few physics, math, or English lessons, too! You’re sure to make students happy when you arrive at these destinations.

Bowling alley

Bowling is a great field trip idea for students who just need some time to have fun. You can often rent out a whole bowling alley to accommodate as many students as needed.

Laser tag/arcade

Everyone loves laser tag! Laser tag arenas often include arcades as well for students who don’t want to run around in the dark. There are often group and student discounts for laser tag, although it can be on the pricier side of field trip ideas.

Ice skating

Ice skating is a unique and fun field trip idea that is relatively easy to organize! It’s best suited for older students who view learning to skate as a fun challenge.

Sports game

Do you have a class full of aspiring MLB or NBA players? Trying to get your homeschooled kids interested in sports? Going to a baseball, football, basketball, or soccer game can be a fun class activity. Make sure you can book seats all together so your students can bond and relax watching the game while you keep an eye on the venue.

Amusement park

What list of field trip ideas would be complete without mentioning a visit to an amusement park? Amusement parks are designed to be fun, meaning there’s something every student can enjoy. Then and Now Program

Our Then and Now Program is designed for the littlest historians, ranging in age from 5 to 7 years old.  Children will travel back in time to the 17th and 18th century and look at life then and compare it to life now. The program is divided into three 30-minute sessions.

Session I:  Herb Garden and Kitchen

We start off in the herb garden and look at plants that had many medicinal purposes.  Can our little historians think of items today that have a similar use?  We will then visit the kitchen and find what is different and the same about this room.

Session II: The Interior of the House

Here, children will visit several rooms including the dining room and the ballroom.  What differences can be found in the purpose of these rooms then and now? Are there objects in these rooms that we still have today?  Do modern homes even have a ballroom?

Session III:  Clothes

In this session, children will learn about colonial clothes.    Then they with dress up in colonial costumes and compare these clothes with dress today.  Parents and teachers may want to take their pictures using cell phones or cameras instead of painting a portrait.

Upstairs, Downstairs Program

The Upstairs, Downstairs program is designed for young historians,  from 8 to 10 years old.  Children will explore the three social classes associated with the Hammond-Harwood House: the enslaved servants, the middling (or middle class) class including artisans or craftsmen, and the gentry class. The 90-minute program is divided into two 45-minute sessions.

Session I.  The Main House

Students will pretend to be guests visiting the Hammond Harwood House.  With their invitation in hand, they are invited into the lower passage and then to the Dining Room. In the Dining Room they will learn the etiquette of 18th century dining and why this meal took anywhere from 2 to 3 hours.  They will also learn about the artisans whose work is represented in this room – William Buckland, architect; John Shaw, cabinetmaker; and Charles Willson Peale, portrait painter.

Students will then move to the Ballroom, an elegant room in the 18th century where not only dancing went on but courting as well.  Students may not be familiar with the latter term but we will explain its meaning.  They then will learn a dance called The Grand March, which was the introduction to a formal ball in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Finally, they will hear the music of two instruments in the room, the pianoforte, and the violin.

Session II:  The Kitchen and the Classroom

Students will go into the Kitchen from the garden. There they will learn about the life of the enslaved people and indentured servants.  They will hear about the schedule of the cook and her 10 to 12 hour work day.  Although the role of the cook was probably the most difficult one, the other servants had to be on duty just as long.

The students will then move to the classroom and learn about the clothes worn in the 18th and 19th century by the enslaved people, the middle class or craftsmen, and the gentry or upper-class.  They will play a Bingo Game called GARM (for Garment).  Finally, they will learn how to set a table as a servant would have done in the 19th century.

The big story: It’s one thing to notice that students aren’t coming to school as often as they used to.

It’s quite another to do something about it.

Field trips play a key role in the initiative. As Kim Hill, the district’s new director of student experience put it, “There is power in going off campus.” Read more here .

Speaking of competitive academics, the coach of an Alachua County high school’s nationally successful math team will start a private school focused on academic competition , Main Street Daily News reports. “America is very competitive, but we channel our competition in sports, for the most part. Pandemic relief: Hundreds of Volusia County teachers could be displaced , with their programs ended, as the school district’s federal pandemic relief funding runs out, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports. District officials said they need to revamp their budgeting systems.

School board politics: Former Martin County superintendent John Millay has dropped his school board candidacy , saying it could jeopardize the relationship his new employer has with the school district, WPTV reports.

Student health: Four students at a St. Lucie County middle school were taken to the hospital after eating what was believed to be THC-laced gummies , WFLA reports.

Superintendents: The deadline to apply for Duval County’s superintendent post is Monday. So far, six people have submitted their paperwork , WJXT reports.

Weather report: Leon County’s Godby High will reopen Monday after having been closed because of severe flooding, the Tallahassee Democrat reports. • Parents at a Flagler County middle school are upset about the dearth of information provided during a tornado warning, Flagler Live reports.
