Where the Fish are Wild, Strong, and Fast

Argentina’s vast, mountainous, and open landscape creates a sharp contrast to the lush and temperate rainforest environment that characterizes the majority of neighboring Chile. The country is noted for its rich culture, friendly people, an abundance of excellent food (arguably the finest steak in the world), amazing Malbec wines, and of course, an impressive variety of freshwater gamefish that are wild, strong, and eager to take a fly. With an expansive line-up of fishing options, a strong network of established lodges, and experienced guides and outfitters that know their waters like the back of their hands, Argentina is a great choice for adventurous anglers eager to experience the finest in freshwater fly fishing.

The combining of the two companies, and our five exclusive lodges, allow us to offer the widest variety of quality trout and Dorado fishing adventures in Argentina. Our attention to detail, high level of service and experienced professional guide team will remain our central focus.

A US based company with operational headquarters in Argentina, SET Fly Fishing is establishing a new standard for fly fishing trips and lodging options.

Golden Dorado

Salminus brasiliensis, rainbow, brown and brook trout, testimonials.

The fishing was incredible, the accommodation was as well, and the staff was beyond friendly. The meals were memorable. Just Delicious. The two highlights for me were getting to fly the helicopter each day and catching the biggest trout I’ve ever landed on a fly rod. Pablo was so enjoyable to teach this old pilot some new tricks.

This was our first time ever fly fishing. Our chance to learn and to receive the expert help, advice and patience of the guides was wonderful – all in such beautiful locations. We really enjoyed the fishing and how easy every aspect of fishing was made for us.

Fishing was great Everyone we dealt with at SET was professional and extremely helpful, patient and friendly

Your guides, chef and staff were fantastic! We loved Nacho, Facu was wonderful, Paco, Gonzalo, Marteen, everyone was great! Everyone made every effort to make out trip fabulous!

Density and size of fish; the challenge; ability to successfully fish for trout in bright summer sun; superb guiding

Excellent trip. Very well organized. All went extremely well. Great people accomadation and food.

The food at both lodges was excellent. The guides are true professionals. The lodge experience and efficieny was excellent.

Incredible Fishing, Food & Service… I’m a completely satisfied customer!

The staff and guides work hard to ensure that I had a great experience. It was much appreciated as my first trip was last year, I returned this year because I had a great experience, and I plan to return again in 2024

Fabulous food, Great guides who were enthusiastic teachers, staff eager to accommodate my gluten free food limitations.

Loved every minute of it , the professionalism of all staff was amazing.

Wetlands, such a beautiful place and the fishing was incredible

Fishing was challenging, but very rewarding. Carlos & Nico were great guides that really helped the experience. The level of service was top notch, especially at Itati lodge, Orlando & Raul were amazing!

We had the most wonderful weather and fishing in a perfect location with wonderful service and guides

Staff was exceptional, from guides to all the lodge and support people. Helicopter fly-outs were beautiful, wonderful way to see the scope and beauty of the area. Fishing the spring creeks up to the lakes.

Variety of fishing experiences – Outstanding guides outstanding food selections and given my Celiac, I had no dietary issues the entire trip! Cabanas and Lodge were fantastic. Waking up to warm fire and coffee!

The combined experience of the environment, the helicopter rides, the people, food and exceptional fishing made for my favorite fly fishing trip ever.

Great locations – exceptional staff at lodges – amazing meals

Another wonderful trip with you guys. Will be coming back!

Staff, guides, fishing, food, accommodations were five star. One of the best fishing trips ever. It was my third trip to this lodge and plan to keep coming. Alphonso and Marianne are exceptional. Thanks for making this trip for our group one we will not forget.

The overnight camps are always great. The attention paid to the special dietary needs of my daughter was awesome.

Great hospitality & people, great guides & fishing, great food, and great scenery.

The marsh was incredible. Really made great because of the weather and the fishing. The guides were fantastic and the food was awesome. The river was tough fishing – but again, weather dependent. I enjoyed my time and grateful that our group all caught dorado’s and we were able to celebrate together.

The entire experience was over the top exceptional! The setting, the people, the welcoming atmosphere was like none other I had ever experienced!

Very well run operation. The day spent on the lake was the highlight for me. I am impressed with how the operation has involved and improved over the years I have been coming. I did not think it could get any better, but was amazed this trip at all of the little things that have been thought of-fires in the cabins, members of the team available to help at any time and the food has always been good in the past, but has somehow been elevated to gourmet status.

exceeded our expectations. everyone went out of their way to customize our needs and meet our requests.

Heli-fishing was amazing! Top notch food and service!

Helicopter trips to rivers were amazing. Overnight at Trocoman House was special. Pajarito spring creek was incredible.

Everything was superb. Far exceeded my expectations.

Spring Creek has the best service and guides of any place I have ever visited.

The lodge accommodations, all staff and guides, food and drink were first-rate – couldn’t be better. You accommodated those in our group who had health issues arise – much appreciated. Wildlife in marsh was astounding. Nothing you could do about the weather, which clearly slowed up the fishing in the marsh. The style of fishing on the Parana was a bit surprising, but quite enjoyable with casting targets galore and excellent boat control.

Lucila and her attention to my pre-trip planning, Salta and the marsh, the FOOD!, Disparo and Rugua, ALL the staff attention to my needs and making me feel such a part of the Argentine culture, dinner on the Parana and simplicity of the charter flight back to Buenos Aires.

fly fishing trips to argentina

Spring time is a great time to be here for those who like all types of fishing. The water is high and clear; the Andes Mountains will still be covered in snow, and the green valleys filled with wild flowers. Streamer fishing is a good option; fishing with sinking tips can be very productive during the day. At certain times of the day, twitching big dry flies can make the fish angry and aggressive. You will find hungry fish that haven´t seen a fly for a while and will chase your fly out from under the banks. In certain rivers, you can find rainbows feeding below the willows, which are easy to catch on dries. Temperatures are usually in the 70´s.

fly fishing trips to argentina

The rivers are at the best water level and dry fly fishing is great. You will be fishing mayfly and caddis hatches during the morning, and in the afternoon, hoppers, beetles, ants, and crickets will make for a fun fishing day. The size of the tippet starts to matter, so 3x to 5x will be used. Temperatures are usually between the 70 to 90.

fly fishing trips to argentina

Tourism starts to decrease in the fall, and it is a great time to be in Patagonia. The days get cooler, which brings good mayfly hatches and trout start feeding on the surface again. Foam lines get a bunch of trout lined up looking towards the surface. Browns start to migrate back to the rivers to spawn, so the chances of a trophy brown increase. Fall colors in Patagonia are amazing and you will also see herds of red stag after a good day of fishing. Those who have the chance to come at this time of year will really understand the tranquility and beauty that this place has to offer. Temperatures are usually in the low 60´s.

PATAGONIA ON THE FLY will give guests the opportunity to plan their trip depending on the type of fishing they like most and their fishing experience. The variety of water is so extensive; rivers like the Chimehuin, Alumine, Collon Cura, Malleo, Caleufue and Limay offer some of the finest fishing in all of Patagonia, with great hatches of mayflies, caddis, stoneflies and incredible minnow runs, willow worms, terrestrials and pancora crabs. Guests can choose to spend their days fishing from drift boats or wading the productive waters. Staying in the Estancias, they will get to fish the best waters at the best time of the day, have short drives, which gives guests the opportunity to get back to the lodge if it´s necessary, and non-fishermen can enjoy the beauty these Estancias have combining days with hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, and more.

Nicolas Schinocca

Born in San Martin de los Andes. At the age of 11, he caught his first fish on a fly rod and since then has spent all of his summers fishing the amazing Patagonian rivers and lakes with his father and brothers. Fishing and skiing became his passion. A full-time fishing guide since 2008, Nico has always looked for new fishing areas to explore. Before joining the Ski Patrol at Chapelco, he used to guide on the Amazon for Golden Dorado during the winter months. A day with him on the river will be a blast and many bent rods.

Fly Fishing Patagonia Argentina

PRG’s fly fishing programs set us apart from the rest and we truly offer the ultimate fly fishing experience in Argentina. Our approach is simple: fish the best water at the best times with the best guides. Matching anglers with just the right lodging and fishing program and executing exceptional trips are our specialties. We are proud to offer programs in the three most important trout fishing regions in Argentina: Trevelin, Rio Pico, and San Martin/Junin de los Andes ( PRG North ). In addition, we have developed three unique programs within our fishing programs: PRG Unplugged , Cast and Blast , and Non-Angling for those that want something different. Our desire is to offer our guests the most variety, provide what no one else can, and always exceed expectations.

Because we fish in three different regions on uncountable rivers, we need rugged gear and equipment to access rivers, custom designed boats for each kind of water, specific tackle for each destination, and professional guides that truly know the water. Probably most important, to provide the best fishing, we need access –lots of access – to the best parts of the most productive rivers. We are proud to say that we have more access than any other outfitter in the region.

Our signature “fish a different river daily” program is truly unique and has given PRG the recognition we enjoy today. On any given day, guests of PRG could find themselves wade fishing on spring creeks or freestone rivers while enjoying sight fishing to rising fish or drifting flies over classic riffles and pools. They could also find themselves floating on classic rivers with expert oarsmen while casting to rising fish, fishing terrestrials along the bank, or maybe fishing streamers for the fish of a lifetime. Guests also have the option to fish area lakes, some offering sight fishing, some offering big dry fly fishing, and others classic wet fly fishing. When you combine all the possible fishing options with diverse scenery and ecosystems, each day is completely different – that’s what makes fly fishing in Patagonia so special!

Fishing days are as long as guests choose. Our guides are not “on the clock” as they are at other lodges and you will enjoy the length of your fishing days. Simply put, our guides are the type of guides you want to fish with, and our fly fishing programs are world class.

Where to fly fish for trout in Patagonia?

When considering a fly fishing trip to Argentina, there are endless options to choose from which is why important planning will make or break your trip. What species do you want to fish for? What part of Argentina do you want to explore? What type of climate do you want to experience? These are all very important questions when looking to maximize your fly fishing trip. In our case, we fly fish for trout, and there are three prominent regions that are famous for it. At Patagonia River Guides, we fish in Rio Pico , Trevelin , and San Martin/Junin de los Andes . These three regions are vastly different in terms of landscape and climate, but they all have one thing in common that no one can argue – the best fly fishing for trout in Patagonia.

I wrote the section on Fly Fishing Chile and Argentina in Fodor's Travel Books.

"Since 1994 My Chilean wife and I have been successfully living, guiding and outfitting Chile and Argentina, I am proud to share with you some of my finest hours on the waters of the Patagonia as illustrated in this Fodor's book. I hope you enjoy reading then experiencing fly fishing's final frontier in two countries completely unique to one another, yet attached at the hip by the world's largest natural border. I listed all the best rivers, lodges and guides in Argentina and Chile, as well as information on choosing an area, the right times to travel to each region and many other helpful tips and secrets I've learned over the years. If you're going to Chile or Argentina for any reason. I highly suggest having this book in your pack."

The Best of Patagonia Fly Fishing

Big Browns, fierce Rainbows, great guides, beautiful scenery, wild boar, soaring condors, magnificent eagles, swans, flocks of wild parrots, pretty horses, beautiful rivers, great dinners, lovely people -- a trip of a lifetime!

My wife and I just returned from an outstanding week of fly fishing in Patagonia courtesy of Jack Trout Internatonal.

We have fly fished extensively in America from Wyoming to Idaho Montana, California, New Mexico Colorado, Alaska -- and this trip with Jack Trout International, Patagonia, Argentina was by far the very best ever!

Jack put together a customized trip specifically for my wife and I. It included the lodging, the restaurants, the very best guides, the very best gear -- everything was top shelf.

Not a package deal where you pay $5-7,000/ per person and you're still just a number. Jack customized everything just for us and we literally saved thousands of dollars.

We stayed eight nights in Junin de los Andes, and we fished with guides five days. We floated four days and waded one day. Our total cost was right at $4,000. ( FOR BOTH OF US ) That included eight nights of very comfortable, modern three star accommodation with ac/heating, hot showers, good wifi, cable TV etc. . . five days of excellent guided fishing, and delicious dinners every night at the best restaurant in town.

Compared to the "Lodge Packages" my wife and I figure we saved at least $8,000 perhaps as much as $10,000 by organizing the trip through Jack Trout.

Forget about this camping along the river nonsense. My wife and I are great camping and outdoor enthusiasts. We are happy to hike in or go in on horseback and camp in the wilderness in order to reach remote, untouched areas when it's necessary. But in Patagonia it's just not necessary.

You are never more than an hour drive from your hotel to the launch site. It's the same river, the same water that the high priced "Lodges" use. You just don't have to camp in Patagonia, because there aren't that many fishermen. It's not Montana where you are on the same stretch of river with 15 other drift boats fishing under an indicator.

The guides: We have been blessed to fish with some of the best guides in the world and the Jack Trout guides in Patagonia where 1st class. In fact our guide was friends with our old friend and guide, Ed Adams and his daughter Rita from Taos, New Mexico fame. It was just sensational!

The gear: We drifted four days on the Collon Cura, Alumine and Chimehuin, Rivers. The guide was a total expert at rowing and negotiating the river in the inflatable pontoon boat. Very safe and stable. We never went through any dangerous or uncomfortable rapids.

We were provided with Simms waders, Simms boots, Sage One rods, Loop reels etc. . . everything 1st class and in excellent condition.

We waded the Malleo River for a phenomenal day catching Browns and Rainbows. The Malleo River is off limits to boats of any sort. We never saw another fisherman all day. In fact, out of the five days of fishing we only saw two other boats fishing the entire time. We are proud Americans-- but try to find that in Montana.

The fishing: ALL of our fishing was Dry Fly. Let me repeat that -- all of our fishing was dry fly.

We fished from the boat using dry flies -- none of that fishing under a bobber.

Sometimes two dry flies, occasionally a hopper-dropper combination, but only rarely. Ninety per cent dry flies. It was almost all sight fishing. See the fish rising, put the fly on him and hold on.

The first day on the Collon Cura River we caught a 22" Brown on TFO 5wt. We caught a 20" Rainbow, a 19" Brown and more fish in the 15 to 19" category then we could count -- mostly Browns.

And that was just the first day. It went on and on from there.

On our next trip through Jack Trout we will take a little bit more time and spread the fishing out a bit as we were catching so many fish and the days were so long, we were a bit exhausted mid week. But we pushed on just through pure adrenaline and excitement at catching so many great fish in such a gorgeous environment.

And speaking of environment, we never saw a single speck of litter the entire time we were in Patagonia on the river's. Not a single beer can, not a single plastic bag, not a single cigarette butt -- nothing, zip, nada -- absolutely pristine. What a pleasure!

So what's for lunch? The guides set up a table with folding chairs and served us hot lunches everyday. I'm talking about heating up gourmet roasted chicken, Milanesa, delicious roasted potatoes, marinated eggplant, fresh garden salads, fabulous brownies and cakes for dessert, wines and beers of your choosing, coffee's -- just 1st class.

Oh, and Patagonia is not Central America. It's not Mexico on the US State Dept travellers warning list. We felt completely safe all the time. We rented a car and drove everywhere. The roads were fine -- especially recommend the Seven Lakes Road from Bariloche up through charming San Martin de Los Andes -- spectacular Andes Mountains. Only the Himalayas are higher.

We could go on and on. Better yet go live it, see it for yourself!

THANK YOU JACK --Woohoo!

5 Breathtaking Fly Fishing Lodges In Argentina For Outdoors Adventurers!

The best fly fishing lodges in Argentina are all set in beautiful Patagonia – a land that has resisted man’s attempts to tame it for centuries. Here you’ll find pristine nature , crystal clear rivers, and streams and breathtaking lakes, all stocked with beautiful salmon, as well as brown and rainbow trout.

Argentina is home to some of the world’s most luxurious fly fishing lodge’s, as well as some cheaper options that even the budget angler can afford.

On a recent fishing trip to Argentina , I had the pleasure of staying in all of these places and I have to say that they are worth the hype.

Patagonia is home to some of the best fly fishing you’ll find anywhere, rivaled only by perhaps Ireland , New Zealand or the US.

In this post, I’m going to share the best time to visit, the history of Patagonian fly fishing, and how these fishing lodges came to be, and then I’ll list the top 5 most beautiful fly fishing lodges in Argentina.

  • Official Fishing Season: November 1st – May 1st

While the official fishing season in Patagonia runs from November 1st to May 1st, the best time to hit the rivers and lakes in the region will depend on what you’re angling for.

The Spring (November-January) is a beautiful time in Patagonia , with much of the snow still sitting atop the Andes Mountains, providing your fishing experience with a breathtaking backdrop. This is the best time to come for larger fish species, as they’re hungry after the long winter and the water is deeper, allowing them to strike more freely.

If you don’t mind waiting for your turn on the river, then this is probably the best time for fishing in Patagonia.

The Summer (January-March) is the busiest time of the year and arguably, the best time to be in Patagonia. This is a time when trout and salmon are gorging themselves on the hordes of bugs that land on the surface of the water. The sunny skies surprisingly also make it the best time for dry flies.

The Fall (March-May) is another great time for fishing in Patagonia. The crowds thin out, the Argentinians are back to school and work after summer holidays and the anglers rejoice in empty rivers, clear skies, and active fishing. As the temperature decreases, the trout start a feeding frenzy to prepare for winter. This is a good time to break out the best 3 weight fly rod in your kit and cast for smaller trout species.

The History

As legend has it, there was a migrant ranch boss who arrived in Argentina in the late 18th century and when he got there, he couldn’t believe that the rivers and lakes were so perfect all around the region, and yet they had no trout in them.

He missed his homeland and his fishing so much that he decided to smuggle eggs into the country and planted them in the rivers.

While this tale may very well be true, official records state that it wasn’t until 1904 when the first true stocking of trout actually took place in Patagonia.

The first fish to be stocked in the area were lake trout, brook, and landlocked salmon which were shipped down from New York and planted in Lake Nahuel Huapi, Gutierrez and Traful.

Later, more species were brought in via egg stocking from the US, England, and Germany , but this time they added Rainbow Trout, Browns, and Atlantic and Pacific salmon to the spawns.

These days the rivers and lakes are teeming with enormous trout and salmon and anglers from around the world are coming to fish these waters in mass.

Top 5 Fly Fishing Lodges in Argentina

Now that you know how the fish got there, when to go, and what to expect from the incredible fishing opportunities in Argentina , it’s time to decide where to stay.

Below I’ll list the 5 best fly fishing lodges in Argentina.

5 Breathtaking Fly Fishing Lodges in Argentina at Hotel Correntoso Spa in Villa La Angostura, Argentina

Correntoso Lake & River Hotel

  • Location: Villa La Angostura
  • Price: From $250 / night

Thanks to the breathtaking spa with the inside-outside heated swimming pool, and the well-appointed rooms with views over Correntoso Lake and the Andes Mountains, this is probably my favorite fishing lodge that I’ve ever stayed at.

The spa also has a hammam (Turkish Sauna ), and a dry sauna.

The best part is that the hotel has a boat parked out front with a friendly local guide who can take you out for a fishing trip whenever you want.

Don’t want to head out with a guide? The world-famous Correntoso River sits right next to this hotel. You can walk up to certain designated fishing areas, or fish right at the opening to the lake.

You really can’t ask for much more when it comes to fishing lodges in Latin America.

Rio Hermoso in San Martin de los Andes, Argentina

Río Hermoso Hotel de Montaña

  • Location: San Martín de los Andes
  • Price: From $650 / night

This is another one of Patagonia’s premier fishing lodges. Set along the famous Rio Hermoso (Pretty River), this hotel has large, bright rooms, some with king-sized beds and balconies with views of the river.

There’s also a beautiful common area with large, comfortable couches and chairs where you can unwind and enjoy a coffee or a hot tea after a long day of fishing.

The fishing in Rio Hermoso is excellent. I woke up in the morning and sight-casted for beautiful browns. The water was so clear that you could literally see schools of trout hanging out in the pools.

Alma del Lago Spa in Bariloche

Alma del Lago Suites and Spa

  • Location: Bariloche
  • Price: From $110 / night

The staff at Alma del Lago Suites and Spa are extremely friendly and you really can’t beat the location with views of Nahuel Huapi Lake and Cerro Catedral Mountain from most of the rooms.

Room rates include a large breakfast each morning and there’s a beautiful indoor pool with views of the lake through massive floor to ceiling windows.

There are plenty of fishing spots around Bariloche (where Alma del Lago Suites and Spa is located) and there are some fly shops in town as well, where you can ask for maps, rent gear and pick up your fishing license.

While you’re in Bariloche, don’t miss Alto el Fuego restaurant for what might just be the best ribeye steak meal in all of South America .

Los Cerros Boutique Hotel by DON in El Chalten, Argentina

Don Los Cerros Boutique Hotel

  • Location: El Chalten
  • Price: From $160 / night

Don Los Cerros is more of a trekking lodge than it is a fishing lodge, although you do see some pictures hanging on the wall with fishermen and the place has a very outdoorsy feel to it.

The main common area in this hotel is absolutely breathtaking, with natural wood-plank ceilings, a big fireplace and chairs arranged around the restaurant all with views out the enormous floor to ceiling windows towards the Andes Mountain range.

From El Chalten, you can book fishing excursions (both fly and spinning) out to Lago Del Desierto and the De las Vueltas river.

Las Vueltas River has monstrous Chinook Salmon that can reach up to 5o lbs, while Desierto Lake is home to brown and rainbow trout and makes for a great place for fly fishing.

Hotel Kosten Aike in El Calafate, Argentina

Hotel Kosten Aike

  • Location: El Calafate
  • Price: From $120 / night

Kosten Aike is another place where you’ll likely see more hiking poles than fishing poles, but it has such a fishing cabin feel and has all the makings of a great fly fishing lodge, including a warm fireplace and a friendly welcome.

The rooms are cozy, bright, and affordable, many with views out to the Andes.

Most people come to El Calafate for the Perito Moreno Glacier, which means that while the town will likely seem crowded when you arrive, most of those people will actually be heading on day trips to see the ice calving into the bay.

You, on the other hand, are here to fly fish, and you’ll have the opportunity to fish for massive lake trout and rainbows in glacial runoff water at places like Lake Roca, Rico River, Lake Argentino, the Bote River and the Santa Cruz River.

There are a few fly fishing guide services for hire in El Calafate that can take you out on trips to different places , or, you can ask the local fish and wildlife rangers where you’re allowed to cast a line.

Just be sure you have your fishing license and you should be fine to fish pretty much all of the waters around Kosten Aike Hotel.

Argentina has, without a doubt, some of the best fly fishing in the world and what makes a trip to Patagonia even more enjoyable is the fantastic accommodations that you can stay at while you’re there.

Argentina is also a country that has become more affordable in recent years thanks to a strong US dollar, so there’s never been a better time to visit.

Most of these lodges are affordable, especially when compared to their US counterparts, they’re clean, comfortable and offer some amazing amenities.

I hope this post inspired you to visit one of the world’s truly pristine fishing environments of Patagonia . The Lake District of Argentina will have you coming back for more. I guarantee it.

Fly Fishing Patagonia | Argentina & Chile

Why choose fly fishing in patagonia, patagonia fly fishing trips, our fly fishing lodges in patagonia, do i need a visa.

Argentina & Chile – No Visa is required for US Citizens, Canadians or European Union passengers for Argentina, just a valid passport.

How do I get there?

Argentina – To get to any of the Lodges in Argentina you will first need to travel to the main hub which is Buenos Aires (Ezeiza International Airport – EZE, Ministro Pistarini Airport). There are direct flights from Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York in the United States and many of the main cities in Europe also have direct flights (Madrid, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome, etc.) Once you arrive to Ezeiza we recommend staying one night in Buenos Aires to get to know the city and to be able to catch your local flight to the Lodge you are going to. To get to the Lodges your flight will most likely depart from the Local Airport (Aeroparque – AEP, Jorge Newberry Airport). Please contact your trip coordinator so that they can recommend best flights to take. Local airline in Argentina is Aerolíneas Argentinas.

Chile (Futa Lodge) – Most of our clients fly-in through Buenos Aires, Argentina first and then fly into Esquel Airport (EQS) and cross the border by land. The land transfer from Esquel Airport to Futa Lodge is approximately 2 hours. You will go through migration and customs by land and then continue your drive to the Lodge. You can also fly in through Santiago de Chile (Santiago de Chile International Airport – SCL, Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport), from there you will have to take a flight to Puerto Montt (Puerto Montt Airport, PMC) and from there another short flight to Chaitén (Chaiten Airport, WCH). The land transfer from Chaitén to Futa Lodge is 2 hours approximately. If you are thinking of taking the second option get in touch with your coordinator so that they can recommend operators and flights.”

Do I need a Fishing License?

All of our destinations require a fishing license. We will ask you for the necessary information so that we can get the Fishing License prior to your arrival.

What should I pack?

Prior to your arrival we will be sending you information on the fishing program including a recommended packing list.

Do you provide loaner fishing equipment?

There are quality fly rods, reels and fly lines available at the Lodges for you to use if needed. Please advise us of your need for a rod/reel prior to arrival to ensure availability. A charge of $125 will be billed to you in the event a rental rod is broken (this covers the cost of shipping and repair). Flies and leaders are also available for purchase at the lodges.

Who will meet me at the airport?

For all our locations a lodge representative will meet you upon your arrival to the local airport holding a sign with the Lodge name so that you can identify them easily. If you are delayed or miss your flight, please let us know.

Can I combine trips?

If you are joining us at our Argentina or Chile lodges, you can easily add to your sporting adventure by combining your trip with either more fishing adding other species, or with a stay at one of our fine bird hunting lodges for the best Cast & Blast experience in South America. If you are interested in adding variety to your sporting life, look no further than David Denies Bird Hunting and Red Stag Patagonia. The best time of year to go fly fishing in Argentina

The first few months of the year are when fly fishing conditions are at their very best in Argentina. The weather on the Rio Grande does not fluctuate a huge amount during the season and the scenery remains breathtaking throughout.

Typically the fresh fish will run the river from January to early March, with anglers having ample opportunity to perfect their casting technique during these weeks.

Late January tends to have the largest push of sea trout. Rather than entering the river in one big run like salmon, sea trout constantly trickle into the river throughout the season. So casting during any of these early months is likely to be worthwhile, with no need to rush and plenty of time to take in your stunning surroundings whilst fishing.

Fly fishing on the Rio Grande in Argentina

With yearly returns in the tens of thousands, the Rio Grande is host to the world’s largest and most consistent run of sea trout. Situated in Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina, this remote and isolated area is a dream fly fishing destination.

Anglers can average up to four fish per day, with records of 30 pound fish. This really is a prime spot to cast your rod and wait for a catch.

The river has a pea-gravel bottom, making it great for wading and suitable for single-hand rods. And with an abundance of beautiful, clear water to navigate, it is difficult to resist dipping in for a closer piece of the action.

Fly fishing on the Rio Grande should be on every angler’s bucket list. Keep reading to learn about the different fly fishing lodges available from LOOP.

Best gear for fly fishing in Argentina

The weather in Argentina, especially Tierra Del Fuego, can be brutal. Strong winds and potential cold evenings mean you need to be well-equipped.

January to early March may be the best months for fly fishing, but there may be more than just a slight chill in the air, despite this being summer and into early Autumn in Argentina. The northern regions of the country tend to be warmer than the south, but when you’re on the water and the breeze picks up you’ll want to layer up.

Fly fishing in Argentina requires some careful packing to ensure you will be comfortable, dry and warm, whatever the weather.

Clothing-wise, the elements can be combated with our Torne Wading Jacket , This hardwearing fishing jacket will keep you dry and warm throughout your fly fishing adventure.

Layering shells, such as our Onka Jacket , are also great for staying warm. Windproof and water-resistant, this is a great all-rounder to pack ahead of heading to the streams.

What size rod should I take to the Rio Grande?

If you’ve never travelled to enjoy fly fishing before, you might need a little guidance when choosing what equipment you’ll need to pack. We recommend that to get the most out of your experience that you take at least two rods with you on your trip to Argentina.

A smaller rod like the ZT-Series Travel Rod is more effective in the evening, when the wind has died down. Plus, this multi-piece rod perfectly combines strength and lightness whilst maintaining the progressive casting taper that has become synonymous with LOOP.

For tougher weather conditions, you’ll benefit from using a larger rod such as the 7X Medium Fast Action Double-Hand Rod . Pack both and you are well set for an excellent fly fishing experience, whatever the weather brings.

Browse the LOOP Fly Fishing Travel Shop and take stock of all your equipment needs before you travel.

Fly Fishing for Dorado

F or seventeen years we have offered spectacular fly fishing trips for Golden Dorado on the High Parana River in Argentina. We are still operating out of the new lodge on the High Parana River; Refugio Amokañi. Pinti, the head guide, has developed an incredible facility right on the water… complete with monkeys in the trees and a spectacular veranda view of the river. Because you simply walk down the steps to the skiffs, this is an improvement over Estancias Atalaya, although I know many of you are missing the ranch. Fishing is generally arranged for 3 to 6 day trips, and it is often combined with a weeks stay at another Argentine fishery; typically Estancias Pilolil on the Alumine’ River. The ecosystem of the Parana is essentially a jungle environment. There are monkeys in the trees, toucans, caimans, and an array of other birds and animals.

trout fishing destination in the Patagonia region

Looking for a great add on to Dorado? We can add a superb trout fishing destination in the Patagonia region. After wading from one end of the Argentine trout waters to the other, we ended up focusing on Estancia Pilolil on the Aluminé River. Since the 2021/2022 season, we have been offering this luxury destination, right in the middle of the Patagonian wilderness on the banks of the prolific Aluminé River. This is not just any lodge, this is among the best operations in Patagonia and one of the finest anywhere.

It features exceptional lodging, cuisine, service, staff, equipment, guides, and of course, fishing! The estancia (ranch) totals 23,000 acres. With 10 miles of private river frontage right on the very best and secluded stretches of the Aluminé River, this is a “solitary” experience. There is also an amazing Spring Creek inside the property offering its own exciting fishing, and day and over-night trips to other nearby fisheries can be arranged.

Accommodations

The lodge is located just upriver from the small village of Ita’ Ibate’. The rooms are single occupancy with ceiling fans, refrigerated air conditioning and a private bath. Meals are classic Argentine fair with copious amounts of good wine. Having a well deserved beverage and appetizer on the veranda overlooking the river is pretty awesome. It takes no more than three minutes to reach the closest fishing, and at first light the skiff and guide are waiting for you the bottom of the stairs. The fishing day is split, with lunch at the lodge and time for a siesta. We start early, with breakfast at about 6:30 AM, breaking for lunch at 12:00 or so, and then returning to the river at 3:30 PM for fishing until dark. This maximizes the productive bite time.

Fly fishing for Dorado on the High Parana River, Argentina

Golden Dorado and Pacu The High Parana is a large tailwater system about 70 kilometers below the Yacireta Dam. Because it is a tailwater, unlike other large Argentine rivers, the water is generally clear. The nature of the river and fish requires skill, so the better, more experienced casters are rewarded. The reason is that much of the fishing is site casting to fish you see, or have seen, near tree stumps, behind rocks, or under overhangs and along cut banks. Accurate casts are rewarded. You will be fishing for Dorado up to about 25 pounds, but most will be 5 to 10 pounds. Pacu is considered the permit of Argentina, and because of its size and power, is the attraction for the best anglers. Pacu in the 15 to 25 pound range are caught, but most will be 8 to 12 pounds.

The Parana is a huge river, several miles wide in some places, but you will mostly be fishing side channels that are 50 to 150 yards wide. Most of the fishing is done from boats, but it is possible to wade the small side channels, much like you would wade a stream for trout, or the larger extensive sand flats, much like saltwater flats fishing.

With low water levels predominating over the last few years, Pinti and the other guides now utilize flats skiffs for much of the fishing. Poling the crystal-clear waters of a sand flat and sight casting to a 20 pound dorado can’t be beat.

Other Species

F ly fishing Argentina’s High Parana River for other species. Other species include Dentuda (a small barracuda looking fish) Palometa, the largest of the piranha, and most importantly, Pira Pita.

The Pira Pita is a small fish, to about 15 pounds, and acts basically like a trout. It is called the Parana Salmon only because of its red meat. It looks nothing like a trout or salmon. It is a hard fighter with good jumps and can be skittish and sometimes hard to hook. There are two species of this fish, white and yellow. Many fisherman go to the High Parana just to fish for Pira Pita. It is unique to this type of river system. Pacu and Pira Pita take dry flies, often dead drifted, just like fishing for Montana trout. It is an incredible experience to see one of these big bruisers slowly come to the surface and sip in your bumble bee imitation.

Fishing Day

When fly fishing for dorado on the High Parana River in Argentina, the fishing day is as follows.

At Refugio Amokañi breakfast is served around 6:00 AM and the clients generally are on the boats around 6:45 AM. The guide and his boat are waiting for you at the bottom of the stairs and you are often making your first cast within 3 to 5 minutes of leaving the beach.

You will be fishing the side channels of the upper sections of the High Parana, a location famous for the concentration of fish. Casting while drifting along the shore is the most common practice and you will mostly be fishing structure. Recently flats skiffs were introduced for poling the expansive sand flats of the main river channel.

You will return to the lodge for lunch, and if desired, a siesta. We are back on the river at 3:30 PM and fish until almost dark.

Other Activities

Amokañi is located in an area with great birding and wildlife. The howler monkeys will likely wake you up in the morning, and birders can have a full time job observing all of the species. Bird viewing is excellent right out your front door. You can also just relax on the veranda over-looking the river, where the evening hors’deurves, wine, and beer are served.

Generally a trip to Amokañi begins by landing in Buenos Aries early in the morning. Clients have a choice of over-nighting in BA to enjoy the great restaurants, tango, and other attractions. At present Aerolineas Argentina flights leave the domestic airport for Corrientes at 2:20 PM, and arrive Corrientes at 3:40 PM. You will be met by the guides for your transfer to the lodge; a trip of about 1.75 hours. At the end of your stay, if going directly back to Buenos Aires, there is a commercial flight from Corrientes at 3:50 PM, arriving BA at 4:50 PM or so. This allows ample time for transfer to the international airport and your late evening flight back to the states. Some clients elect to spend an extra day or two in BA. Private charter flights are also available and can be arranged to and from most other fishing destinations, as well as Buenos Aires.
