We usually like to escape our long Idaho winters by visiting some warmer locations. For us, Texas has been a great place to spend the winter and Christmas seasons. There are so many huge cities and charm throughout. Texas also has a diversity of landscapes and, of course, its iconic, unique charm, creating so many fun places to visit in December.

This giant state will make your winter unforgettable! We have found the best places to visit during December and want to share them with you. We will offer you destinations that range from natural wonders to bustling cities. The Lone Star State has it all.

Best Places to Visit in December in Texas 

1. big bend national park .

If you want to start your great Texan adventure, you cannot pass on visiting the Big Bend National Park . Trust us, December is when this remote wonderland really shines. The weather is just right for hiking, stargazing, and soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the Chisos Mountains.

You also won’t want to miss their wonderful hot springs. We visited Boquillas Hot Springs during our last visit to Big Bend, and it was definitely the highlight of our trip. We almost had the place to ourselves, and we got to watch the wild horses graze just across the river from us.

You will love this outdoor retreat with its own natural spa. Plus, if you’re into horse riding, mountain climbing, or even hunting, you’ll find plenty of trails to explore. Big Bend’s for those who love adventure and nature, it has it all!

2. Galveston

If you’re all about coastal vibes in December, you’ll want to check out Galveston. This place is a coastal paradise. It’s like stepping into a Hallmark coastal movie. With all that beautiful Victorian architecture and a bustling waterfront, this place is just brimming with life.

Galveston also knows how to do holidays right. The Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens is an absolute must-see. It’s like they sprinkle the whole place with a touch of magic. The dazzling display will leave you utterly awestruck. It’s like a winter wonderland by the sea! So, if you’re up for some coastal charm and holiday cheer, Galveston is calling your name.

If anyone in your group loves roller coasters, be sure to stop by Pleasure Pier. It is one of our favorite places to spend the afternoon in Galveston.

If you’re up for some big-city vibes with a Texas twist, Dallas is the place to be. This city’s got that perfect blend of modern dazzle and good ol’ Texan hospitality that’s hard to resist.

When December rolls around, the Dallas Arboretum turns into a real-life winter fairy tale. It becomes acres of gardens decked out with twinkling Christmas lights and festive decorations. It’s like something out of a dream.

Dallas also knows how to throw a party. The annual Dallas Holiday Parade is the cherry on top. You’ll get floats, marching bands, and enough holiday spirit to make even Scrooge smile. So, if you’re looking for a December escape or a spring break getaway that’s equal parts modern excitement and warm Southern charm, Dallas has your name written all over it.

Houston is an amazing and vibrant city we love. We love to visit museums when we visit a new place. Here, you can visit the Museum of Natural Science , where you’ll feel like you’re stepping into a real-life time machine. They’ve got everything from ancient fossils to beautiful gem collections. 

During the holidays, the Houston Zoo Lights gets decked out in a dazzling display of holiday magic. And, of course, there is always something fun happening at the Space Center . Their “Galaxy Lights” event has some stunning space-themed light displays.

This is also where you can witness crystal fireworks coming to life on a dazzling 40-foot-tall cascading light display. Fun fact – this is one of only two crystal fireworks displays in the world!

And if you’re looking for something extra special, the Lone Star Flight Museum is hosting a candlelight concert. The Candlelight: Holiday Special featuring “The Nutcracker” is simply put, a beautiful musical concert you can experience while bathed in the gentle glow of candlelight.

5. San Antonio

San Antonio’s historic charm shines even brighter during December. The River Walk , we kid you not, transforms into something straight out of a holiday movie. There are millions of twinkling lights, creating a magical atmosphere that’ll warm your heart.

For a unique attraction, try to fit a visit to the Natural Bridge Caverns in December. These are open on weekends from December through February. They also offer “Christmas at the Caverns”.

You get caroling in the caverns, hot cocoa bar, stories with Mrs. Claus, and photos with the big guy in the red suit – Santa Claus. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience these unique natural wonders with a seasonal charm. 

Make sure you make a stop at the iconic Alamo . It’s a real Texas must-see. Also, you need to treat yourself to some delicious Tex-Mex cuisine. Tacos, enchiladas, and queso, simply yum! You can’t pass on one of the best historic places to visit in December in Texas.

6. Port Aransas

If you’ve been dreaming of a sunny December by the shore, Port Aransas is practically waving at you. Port Aransas is a laid-back coastal destination with very comfortable mild winter temperatures. If you’re into birdwatching, this place is a real treat. 

And if collecting seashells is your thing, you’ll also have a great time. But the real stars of the Gulf of Mexico are the dolphins. You can actually spot these playful dolphins leaping and splashing in the water. Port Aransas is one of the best places in Texas to visit in December if you’re looking for a beach escape. 

During our last trip to Port Aransas, we took our 5th wheel and camped right out on the beach . We have found a few places in Texas where you can camp right on the beach, and this area is one of our favorites. Camping on the beach is free but you do need to get a permit .

You are right in town, making it easy to enjoy the downtown attractions, tasty restaurants , and the beach.

7. San Marcos

San Marcos is one of the hidden gems of the Lone Star State. Trust us, it’s got all the ingredients for an unforgettable December getaway. San Marcos has this charming blend of natural beauty and small-town charm. If you’re looking for a romantic escape, you’ve hit the jackpot.

The pristine San Marcos River is a natural wonderland where you can spend your day tubing or paddleboarding. Nothing like a warm 72-degree water adventure in the middle of winter. And for nature enthusiasts like us, the nearby Texas Hill Country is amazing. Scenic hikes, breathtaking views, and the rugged beauty of the hills bring in the charm. 

Downtown San Marcos is something straight out of a cozy romance movie. Unique shops, cozy cafes, and the kind of ambiance that makes you want to stroll hand in hand. It’s the perfect backdrop for a romantic date.

8. Corpus Christi

Another great beach destination is Corpus Christi. Here, you’ve got this perfect mix of sandy shores and cultural vibes. If you’ve always dreamed of a scenic beach drive, we recommend you head over to Ocean Drive. This is a very fun street with mansions and good views of the ocean.

The Texas State Aquarium is where you’ll go for some charming underwater wonders. Seriously though, during the winter, they bring out underwater Santa Claus and elves! This is, in our opinion, a hilarious way for children to meet Santa this year. 

During our last visit to the Texas State Aquarium, our daughter volunteered to answer a question during the dolphin show and then got to take a special picture with the dolphins. It was a highlight of our trip for her. We love the aquarium in Corpus Christi.

9. Fort Worth 

Something very cool about Fort Worth is the old-timey feel you get from this place. It is a great place to get a taste of the Old West, and we know you will love that Southern hospitality, especially during the holidays.  

At the Fort Worth Stockyards , you’ll feel like you’ve gone back to the days of cowboys and cattle drives. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of watching a real-life cattle stampede. Plus, you can get a taste of some seriously delicious Texas barbecue while you’re here.

In December, you get the full southern winter experience with hot cocoa, ice skating, and pictures with Santa. 

But if you’re more of a green-thumb enthusiast, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden is your peaceful paradise. Not only can you take a stroll through lush gardens, but they deck out for the holidays, too.

You can go through their beautiful Lightscape exhibit and take in the tunnels and strands of light. There is nothing more magical than being surrounded by colorful blooms and fragrant blossoms, along with some twinkling lights.

10. Amarillo 

If you’re up for an offbeat adventure in the Texas Panhandle this December, Amarillo is your quirky bet. For example, the iconic Cadillac Ranch – a row of vintage Cadillacs sticking out of the ground like a piece of pop culture art.

Something kind of cool about this place is that you can leave your mark, literally. You can bring your own spray paint and leave your mark on these colorful classics. It’s a bit wild and a whole lot of fun.

If you happen to forget your own spray paint, there is a small booth there where you can buy some. We ended up buying our spray paint from there, and that worked out great for us. It is a bit more expensive but very convenient.

You’ll also want to enjoy the food in this town. The Big Texan Steak Ranch is the epitome of a good Texan steak. Pair this with some mashed potatoes (a personal favorite) and maybe some tasty fried okra, and you’ve got yourself a Texan dinner.

And if you’re there for Christmas, you will not regret dining at their special holiday buffet. Talk about being full on Christmas.

11. El Paso 

It’s not a surprise that being a bordering city to Mexico, El Paso offers a unique blend of Texan and Mexican cultures. And if you have never experienced a Mexican “Navidad,” you’re in for a treat!

First, the food is amazing, if you can, try some pozole and tamales. Don’t forget to check out the Merry-achi Christmas (Dec 23 “Nochebuena”). This is a festive night of Mariachi music at the Plaza Theatre.

There are also some other really nice things happening here during the holidays in December, including horse-drawn carriage rides through the enchanting streets of El Paso. Or if you’re into the classic theater, Les Misérables is showing at the popular Plaza Theatre mid-month. 

But if you’re up for some outdoor adventure, the Franklin Mountains are calling your name. Hiking, exploring, and taking in breathtaking views this is where you will want to be. El Paso is a festive town you will want to experience during this season.

Romantic Winter Getaways in Texas 

12. fredericksburg.

If you’re up for a charming getaway with a German twist right in the heart of Texas, Fredericksburg is calling your name. Fredericksburg is a quaint town that’ll steal your heart. My husband and I went on a trip to San Antonio and Fredericksburg, and we loved it!

If we are talking about one of its special charms, it is the wineries. Fredericksburg is known for its vino, and December is the perfect time to indulge. Wine tastings are the best way to cozy up this season. You’ll be sipping on local wines that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance.

And while you’re here, don’t forget to explore the picturesque Main Street. It’s like something out of a holiday movie – charming shops, festive decorations, and a cozy, intimate atmosphere that’s perfect for a romantic stroll.

13. Austin

Daytime temperatures in Texas in the winter months can differ daily. So, always bring a coat with you, and layer your clothing. Peruse these winter trips to take in Texas – they may even be on your Texas winter bucket list.

Just so you know, Texas winters can get downright cold in the winter, and you may even see snow. You’ll need a coat somewhere in the state in the months of December, January, and February – and sometimes in March. Bundling up may be needed depending on where you visit, especially in the Panhandle.

1. Follow The Texas Antique Trail

Choose a region in Texas and follow the trail to unique antique shops. See all seven regions on the  Texas Antique Trail  to get an idea of the area you want to visit. Also, if you’re heading out before Christmas, several  Top Antique Shows in Texas  are going on in November and December.

And if you choose the region east of Dallas-Fort Worth – you might want to visit the world’s largest flea market – First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX.

2. Rent An RV And Head To The Hill Country

Traveling in an RV gives you more freedom to see the world, bring the things you want, and do something different. It also allows you to enjoy nature and travel to several different places. I suggest heading to the Texas Hill Country on a scenic drive on Hwy 281 and making Marble Falls your first stop, where you’ll find at least five RV Parks for overnights. Many lakes surround Marble Falls (take your pick), there are a few golf courses, and it has a lovely walkable downtown with a winery.

Hanging out by the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels is also a great winter idea. The river is constantly flowing, and everything is open all around it. Gruene Hall is probably playing country music – you never know who will show up there or who will be singing.

3. Backpack In Big Bend National Park

If you long to explore the great outdoors, consider a backpacking trip. Pack your bag with the winter essentials and embark on an unforgettable adventure through Big Bend National Park. Don’t forget to snap photos of breathtaking views and watch for wildlife. It said that the Big Bend area is a hidden gem and that, though it’s on practically every list I have on this site, it’s not visited enough.

Backpacking in national parks is also a great way to see the world for what it is. Plus, winter months are typically cheaper than summer rates. If there is a time during your visit, spend the day at the natural hot springs nearby.

4. Winter Camping In The Texas Panhandle

What about winter camping? Have you ever tried combining the two? Winter camping is another extreme yet satisfying outdoor adventure. Plus, winter turns the great outdoors into a new world, making the experience unlike any other. Nature lovers enjoy spending time at Palo Duro Canyon zip lining across the canyon. I did this once but in the summer. It was my first zip line experience, and I was hooked on the outdoor activity.

5. Plan A Girls’ Trip To Dallas

When you can take a trip with some of the best women in your life, that experience becomes even better. A girls’ trip is a great way to reconnect and make more memories. The Dallas area is spread out, so find a great place to start. Deep Ellum is the best place to party, or if you all like art, the Dallas Museum of Art downtown would be excellent. And, while you’re in the area, stop by the Dallas Farmers Market. It’s one of the best outdoor markets I’ve been to in North Texas.

6. Visit Houston On A Houston CityPASS

A CityPASS is a simple vacation method in popular destinations like Houston and Dallas. CityPASS tickets contain admission to the most famous and popular attractions in each city and are priced up to 50% less than the combined regular price of admissions. The Johnson Space Center and the Space Center Houston are included in the Houston CityPass.

7. Stroll Downtown Austin

The best winter vacations are always in the south because the winter weather is better. Austin, the live music capital of the world, would be a great option. There’s always something going on there – live music and special events. Grab a hot cocoa and enjoy your time while walking around. It’s also a great time to take your kids to the Texas State Capitol.

Zilker Park and the Zilker Botanical Garden are wonderful places to visit in Austin.

8. Take A Day Trip To A State Park

All you need is a day at one of our Texas State Parks to fall in love with Texas (again). I hear Colorado Bend State Park and McKinney Falls State Park are gorgeous. One day soon, I’ll make it to Colorado Bend State Park – it’s on my winter bucket list.

UPDATE:  I made it …BUT we didn’t have reservations, and the park was full! Learned a lesson the hard way. Make reservations online for any Texas State Park. Another update – I went a second time and got in, but silly me didn’t have enough time to see it all.

9. Plan a Girl’s Getaway To San Antonio

Winters in San Antonio are very mild and rarely get under 60 degrees. Once in February, my son and I went to San Antonio for an event, and the weather was so nice and warm that the swimming pool at the hotel was open. Not knowing and not even thinking he could swim in February, I did not pack his swimsuit – so I made a mad dash to Target for one.

The San Antonio River Walk restaurants are booming in the winter, and the guided boat tours are operating. The Natural Bridge Caverns is always open, and The Spanish Missions would be a great Texas History lesson to learn more about. One of our writers took a  girl’s getaway to San Antonio  with two of her besties, where they visited some luxurious places.

10.  Explore West Texas

Trip ideas in Texas have to include West Texas. Do you have a subscription to the Texas Highways magazine? I do, and in each magazine I received in 2022, there was an ad/article about taking a West Texas Road Trip.

Towns included are Fort Stockton, Midland, Odessa, Alpine, Fort Davis, and Marfa. It briefly discusses each town and what’s happening during publication.  Texas Highways  is my favorite Texas travel magazine, and I have many trip ideas in Texas, too.

11. Trek Down To South Padre Island

South Padre Island is a popular, well-known Texan Gulf Coast destination for Texans. It’s a tropical island paradise and the perfect place to escape cold temperatures. See what you can do on  South Padre Island  in the winter, and be sure to include Padre Island National Seashore in your travels.

12. Wine Lover’s Celebration Wine Tour

February – texas hill country.

The  Texas Hill Country Wine Trail  hosts four self-guided wine tours yearly in the hill country, the first being in February. Small towns of the hill country will participate in the first Texas wine tour of the year. Don’t let the name fool you. I went with a girlfriend (not a lover) last year, and we had a blast. Well, before the ice storm came through. That’s not a usual thing to happen in that area, either.

Double your fun and visit a few wineries (that are participating) in Dripping Springs, so you can also visit Hamilton Pool Preserve. Then you can also eat at Salt Lick BBQ – an awesome place to hear live music and enjoy the good barbecue they are known for.

13. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier

I haven’t been to the Texas Gulf Coast in the winter months, but we did go in October one year. And would you know, it was warm enough for my son to play in the water? And so he did – clothes in all!

Not only is  Galveston Pleasure Pier  open year-round, but it’s also open on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. You may want to know  where to eat in Galveston  because there are so many places on the Island that it can get overwhelming.

14. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Make it a week-long road trip and trek further to the  Guadalupe Mountains National Park . Located 110 miles east of El Paso and 56 miles southwest of Carlsbad, you could even visit Carlsbad Caverns. This is a trip of a lifetime.

15. Visit El Paso

Go for a scenic drive and explore Franklin Mountains State Park – the most western point of Texas. Smell the roses in the Municipal Rose Garden. These are just a few things to do. Going to El Paso would make a wonderful Texas winter vacation. You can always go to New Mexico and visit Carlsbad Caverns.

Hiking in a state or national park, attending an outdoor holiday festival, or dining al fresco are everyday things to do in the winter. For the occasional gray day in December and January, the state's biggest cities have several venues like museums to spend an afternoon.

For those looking for holiday cheer during the winter season, Texas specializes in a Lone Star Christmas. Cities like Galveston and Grapevine transform into true winter wonderlands at this time of year.

Lodging and campground reservations should be booked ahead of time during this busy season. Several excellent campgrounds are found in Big Bend National Park . If you aren't interested in roughing it, you can find some great hotels and resorts just outside the park .

Among the many fun places to go in downtown Dallas , the Dallas World Aquarium (DWA) is a must-visit no matter the time of year. The aquarium is in the Historic West End District. This family-favorite destination features several exhibits that transport you across the world.

From the forests of Guatemala to the beaches of Borneo, DWA houses animals from several continents . The fish tanks at DWA hold over 600,000 gallons of water with various species, including sharks and manatees. And it's not just fish at the aquarium, either. Some of the larger mammals at DWA include flamingos, ocelots, and penguins.

While you're here, another must-see museum in Dallas is The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza . This museum chronicles the 1963 assassination of President John F. Between Dallas and Fort Worth in the north-central part of the state, Grapevine earns its nickname as the Christmas Capital of Texas . With over 1,400 holiday events over 40 days, the city outdoes itself every year to hold onto that title.

In a city known for its historical architecture, these antique streets stand out in winter, with costumed characters and holiday animatronics. Decorations abound in the historic downtown district this time of year, making it impossible to avoid the holiday cheer. Aside from the aesthetics, it's also the several attractions that pop up that make Grapevine one of the best Christmas towns in the US .

You can hop aboard the North Pole Express in Grapevine to visit Mr. and Mrs. Claus at home. A Parade of Lights and holiday lineup at the Historic Palace Theatre also contribute to cherished family memories.

One holiday celebration not to miss in Grapevine is the Lone Star Christmas at the elegant Gaylord Texan Resort . This resort and conference center decks out its halls with millions of Christmas lights and themed events. Ice-skating, snow tubing, and several other snowy staples are available at the resort in winter.

South Padre Island is an excellent vacation destination no matter the time of year.

It's a barrier island and resort town at the coastal tip of Texas, often visited for its beautiful beaches . And, come winter, the temperate forecast keeps things comfortable at about 50 to 70 degrees, making for a welcomed end-of-year retreat.

Activities like swimming and sun tanning aren't as popular in winter, but things like sunny-weather strolling and fishing are as prevalent as ever. And, this tropical island knows how to host visitors, with a wide array of live music, restaurants, and other quintessential things to do .

Among many other incredible attractions in Houston , tourists from around the world travel here to visit the city's museums. These educational establishments are popular throughout the year and make for a great trip on a winter day.

Many of the best museums in Houston are concentrated in the Museum District . With over 19 museums, most within walking distance of each other, this beautiful downtown area covers all subject matters. One of the city's most famous museums is the Houston Museum of Natural Science . This impressive space features a growing collection of dinosaur fossils.

Other fun winter museums in the district include The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Children's Museum Houston .

Space Center Houston is another of the must-visit Houston museums, 30 minutes southeast of downtonw Houston. As the official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center , this engaging institution dives deep into American space travel. Space Center Houston features replica space shuttles, moon rocks, and even the chance to bump into an astronaut.

Winter is an excellent time to visit a Texas state park. The moderate weather across the state requires less sweat for activities like hiking, biking, or horse riding.

Texas has 80 state parks that accommodate a variety of activities during the winter. From Big Bend Ranch State Park in West Texas to Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle, scenic state parks wait to be explored across Texas in winter.

The best state park to visit in the winter depends on the reason for getting away. Fishing trips, rock climbing, and cavern exploring are some of the many adventures to be had in Texas state parks .

Nothing beats a round of golf on a sunny day in December. Texas has plenty of winter golf destinations, each offering quality play throughout the season. And, while nearly every city in Texas has a golf course open throughout the year (or multiple courses in the case of bigger cities), a few Texas golf destinations stand above the rest.

A couple of common golf destinations include Horseshoe Bay Resort , 60 miles northwest of Austin, and La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio. These first-class golf clubs cater to a wide range of play and offer additional amenities like restaurants and places to stay.

The warm weather of Texas makes for an excellent way to welcome the New Year. Cities across the state celebrate New Year's Eve in style. In any major city you can expect fireworks displays at the end of the year and downtown streets full of revelry.

Austin, the Live Music Capital of the World , ushers out the year with an amplified soundtrack throughout the city. In Dallas, the lights and fireworks center around Reunion Tower with several vantage points to enjoy the show. And in San Antonio, the city throws a huge outdoor celebration near the River Walk .

Small towns in Texas also deliver an excellent start to the year. Gruene Hall , the oldest dance hall in Texas, puts on quite the show in New Braunfels. Nearby, the community of Luckenbach also has a famous dance hall.

On the coast, Galveston's Strand Historic District has also grown quite the reputation for New Year celebrations near the beach.

No matter the season, Texas caverns are fun to explore . Deep beneath Texas Hill County, these caves proliferate thanks to erosion in the limestone bedrock. And thanks to the underground insulation, Texas caves remain at approximately 70 degrees throughout the year.

Natural Bridge Caverns is one of the biggest and best caves open for the public to explore. Guided tours are the only way to see the fantastic cave formations of Natural Bridge Caverns. Notable speleothems include thousands-of-years-old stalactites and columns. This family-owned facility also features above-ground attractions like a zipline course and gem-panning stations.

Hundreds of caverns dot the Texas Hill Country landscape. Guided tours and public entry are allowed in only a handful of these caves. Additional otherworldly caverns in the area include Cave Without a Name and Caverns of Sonora .

Snow is a rare commodity in the state. Parts of the state never witness a snowflake, making any flurries in Texas newsworthy. While tourists travel to Texas to escape winter precipitation, seeing snow in the Lone Star State is a special occasion.

One of the hottest spots for snow in Texas is Amarillo, in the northern panhandle. With an elevation of 3,600 feet , Amarillo receives snow from the westward Rocky Mountains at least once a year. Snowfall varies from melted-by-the-morning to rare "thunder snow" events that cause whiteout conditions.

Traveling to see snow in Texas can be tricky. For Amarillo, January offers the best chances. Like Lubbock and El Paso , other areas in Texas also provide a few opportunities to see snow each year. Even if you don't find snow, Amarillo has plenty of sightseeing opportunities . Head to Cadillac Ranch and bring out your inner artist by spray painting these standing cars. For a little nature, take a drive to Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

8. Escape the Winter at South Padre Island

Visitors travel from all over the country to this winter getaway in Texas, and for good reason. Boasting lovely weather and sunny skies throughout its coldest months, South Padre Island is a great spot for a Texas winter vacation. 

Collect seashells along the beach, cast a fishing line into the water, or simply relax in a beach chair while listening to the waves crash. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see sea turtles hatch while you’re there!

9. Discover Winter in Dallas, TX

Houston is one of my favorite destinations for winter vacations in Texas. There’s just so much to do to get in the holiday spirit and enjoy the cool weather! One spot you won’t want to miss is the Discovery Green outdoor ice skating rink . 

If you’ve got some shopping to do, head over to The Galleria . You can easily spend a whole day walking through the shops, scoping out the holiday decorations, and tearing it up at the indoor ice skating rink. Or, see the incredible holiday displays at Houston Zoo Lights .

11. Cruise Down to Corpus Christi, Texas

Much like South Padre Island, Corpus Christi is a great spot for a winter getaway in Texas if you want to enjoy a little peace and quiet near the ocean. Most people flock to Corpus Christi in the summer, so during the winter you’ll largely have the beach to yourself. Build a bonfire on the sand to roast s’mores, take long walks along the beach, and if you’re feeling bold, take a dip in the chilly water!

Millions of colorful bulbs adorn trees, sculptures, and walkways, creating a magical winter wonderland. Live music performances featuring local artists add to the festive atmosphere, celebrating the Texan love for music and community.

Searching for more holiday music? Book a table to see the Annual Christmas Light Show at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters on Lake Austin. This show features beautiful Christmas lights synchronized to music as well as live performances.

We have been going to Mozart’s for the past several years now and the show only seems to get better every time. Sipping a hot chocolate at Mozart’s and eating their sweet treats while admiring the lights is a memorable experience.

Another must see attraction is the iconic Christmas Tree in front of the Texas State Capitol. The capitol gift shop has many Texas themed Christmas gifts. Austin features several other holiday events. The Circuit of the Americas hosts the Peppermint Parkway, while the Wildflower Center has luminaries. Christmas shopping markets are present throughout the city and holiday shows are held in the theaters.

Houston’s Space Spectacle

12 Days of Christmas, Dallas

While we live in Houston, come Christmas time you will find us in Dallas. The Big D is home to a ton of our favorite holiday attractions and some of them are completely free!

Start your trip at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, a holiday destination in itself. It features scenes from the popular 12 Days of Christmas holiday songs spread throughout the park.

Don’t be surprised to take a stroll and come upon 12 drummers, 7 swans, or two turtle-doves in a rotating gilded cage! The Christmas Village at the garden is also a favorite with kids.

Dallas also hosts the “Dallas Holiday Parade,” one of the largest Christmas parades in the state. The parade is a massive affair, drawing Texans from miles around. Spectators line the streets, brandishing their state and national flags, as they watch colorful floats, marching bands, and Santa Claus himself parade by.

The Dallas metropolitan area also has a host of other Christmas attractions for families and couples. In my opinion, it is one of the best places to visit in North Texas for Christmas. See the multi-colored Christmas tree and the singing fountains at night in Klyde Warren Park.

Cowboy Christmas in Fort Worth

Moody Gardens Christmas Celebration is a perfect spot for those who love a resort style holiday. The highlight here is Iceland, a festival full of unique carved ice sculptures. Moody Gardens also has several other holiday events including a Festival of Lights events and Rudolph movie screenings.

Looking for more holiday attractions in Galveston Bay? Take the kids to the Polar Express train ride at the Galveston Railroad Museum. The lit up boat parade on the bay is also spectacular for visitors.

New Braunfels’ Cowboy Kringle

New Braunfels , half an hour north of San Antonio, is famous for many things: Oktoberfest, sausages, cleanest restrooms in America (courtesy Buc-ees), and Cowboy Kringle!

Cowboy Kringle is the ultimate Texas Christmas icon. He lives near the Historic Gruene Dance Hall, rides a horse, wears cowboy boots, dons a Christmas cowboy hat with a Texas star, hands out candy cane, calls children ‘buckaroos’, and a big belt buckle keeping his costume together. 

He endures the sunny December days in swathes of thick fur and heavy leather with a smile on his face – just like the cowboys of West Texas. You need reservations to take a photo with him and the spots sell out well in advance. Judging by the kids’ faces, the long wait is well worth it! 

Little wonder that photos with Cowboy Kringle are one of the most unique things to do in Texas for Christmas! After your photos, take the time to enjoy the Country Christmas Celebrations in Gruene Historic District . The charming downtown and its historic structures including Gruene Dance Hall twinkle with Christmas lights and holiday cheer. German Roots

New Braunfels has German heritage and celebrates Christmas in the traditional German way. You can visit the Weihnachtsmarkt, the German-themed holiday market, and buy Texas made gifts and artisan produce. Other activities include holiday lights, parades, and wine festivals. 

Another popular attraction is Santa’s Ranch Drive Thru Christmas Light Park. This lights display is spread out over a mile long road on a ranch and just gets better every year. There is an area to get out of the car where you can meet Santa, sip on hot chocolate, and enjoy kettle corn.

Natural Bridge Caverns is another great holiday destination in New Braunfels. Their ‘Christmas in the Caverns’ event lets you listen to Christmas carols, meet santa Claus, and see the lights – all deep underground!

South Padre Island’s Beachy Christmas 

While South Padre Island is more famous as a Texas spring break destination, this barrier island resort town is also amazing to visit during the Christmas holidays. In fact, it is the best Christmas Town in Texas for beach lovers.

You can have a tropical Christmas holiday on South Padre Island complete with building sandcastles, beachcombing for sea shells, and riding the waves. Eat the fresh seafood and go on a dolphin watching cruise on the Gulf of Mexico. See sand sculptures at South Padre Island this holiday season.

Mexican Christmas in El Paso 

Planning a trip to West Texas in the winter and looking for the best places to visit during Christmas in the Texas desert? Try El Paso!

There are many traditions that make Christmas in El Paso unique, such as the Las Posadas celebration. This nine-day event commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, and includes processions, music, and food.

Another popular tradition is the seven pointed Piñata, which is filled with candy and toys. Other holiday events in El Paso include a parade, a tree-lighting ceremony, and Santa’s workshop. Visitors can also enjoy traditional Mexican foods and traditions during this time in El Paso.

Of course, no visit to El Paso in December would be complete without seeing the luminarias. These lanterns are made of paper bags filled with sand and candles, and they are used to light up the streets on Christmas Eve.

Katy – Fort Bend Suburb Spectacular

The Katy Fort Bend area near Houston is growing at a great speed and fast becoming one of the popular Christmas destinations in the greater Houston area. 

The George Ranch Historical Park in Fort Bend is a great way to spend a historical Christmas in Texas. The park is located near Houston, Texas and is a great day trip from the city. On a  visit, you can enjoy Christmas traditions from the 19th century at this living history site. Visitors can participate in several activities including hayrides, Christmas crafts for kids, as well as songs and story sessions around the campfire.

Katy also has several holiday attractions. The Light Park – Katy is a fabulous drive through display of holiday lights that takes place on the grounds of Typhoon Texas. The Home for the Holiday Gift Market is a great place to buy gifts for your loved ones.

Grand Prairie Lights 

Grand Prairie, located near Dallas, is a great place to spend Christmas in Texas. A primary attraction here is the Prairie Lights, a dazzling drive through light display. This holiday extravaganza takes place in Lynn Creek Park on the shores of Joe Pool Lake. The event has new themes and displays every year, making it a favorite with families in North Texas.

Grand Prairie is also the perfect place to shop for gifts. You can enjoy shopping for handmade gifts at the Holiday Gift Market on Main Street or hit up Grand Prairie Premium Outlets to scour for deals on branded merchandise.

Arlington , located just 15 mins east of Grand Prairie, is home to Texas Christkindl Market, the largest outdoor Christmas market in the Southwest. This free market promises all European vibes with handmade gifts, treats, and mulled wine.

Boat Parades in Corpus Christi 

Christmas in Corpus Christi is a unique blend of coastal charm, tropical vibes, and festive spirit. My favorite holiday event in Corpus Christi is the Illuminated Boat Parade over the bay. You can see several hundred beautifully decorated boats from the marina; our kids especially love seeing them float and reflect lights on the water.

The La Posada Lighted Boat parade on the canals downtown is a nod to the city’s Hispanic Heritage. This colorful procession is a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Floats adorned with holiday lights and nativity scenes wind their way through the city, accompanied by joyful music and dancing.

In Corpus Christi during Christmas, you can dip your toes in another Texas tradition – tamales! While many Texas families host their own tamale making parties, you can partake in this culinary tradition at Huerta’s Tamales. You will find their food trucks selling steaming hot tamales at various locations in the city.

Musical Christmas in Lubbock

The heart of Lubbock’s Christmas spirit can be found at Mackenzie Park’s Santa Land. Every year, this beloved attraction transforms into a drive thru winter wonderland with millions of twinkling and sparkling lights. 

Music is an integral part of Lubbock’s Christmas celebrations, echoing the city’s rich musical heritage. Caroling in the Courtyard event is organized by the Buddy Holly Center and is free to visit. Cactus Theatre in downtown hosts Christmas performances for visitors.

Another of Lubbock’s cherished traditions is the annual Carol of Lights at Texas Tech University. This spectacular event sees the campus illuminated by thousands of lights, symbolizing the holiday spirit and the university’s pride. 

Amarillo’s Western Christmas Celebrations

Even if it doesn’t snow, the air is distinctly cooler compared to the coast or South Texas – perfect excuse to sip hot chocolate, savor peppermint coffees, and take on the 72 oz challenge at the Big Texan Steak Ranch!

Fredericksburg was settled by German pioneers in 1846 and still retains its unique German traditions and heritage. This Texas small town has beautiful architecture and an intriguing variety of cultural attractions as well as museums. It is also popular for its one of a kind Christmas Texas celebrations. 

Fredericksburg is a great place to spend a festive holiday weekend with your loved ones. The highlight of Christmas in Fredericksburg is the beautiful rotating wooden German Christmas pyramid in Marktplatz. Palestine, Texas is home to our favorite Texan holiday tradition, the Polar Express ! This holiday train ride is hosted by the Texas State Railroad and imitates the story from the popular movie ‘The Polar Express’ starring Tom Hanks.

On the ride, kids get a golden ticket and climb aboard the beautifully decorated train. The staff reads out loud the famous story on the train as it makes its way to the North Pole to see Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and the elves. When Santa Claus  meets the kids, he gives them a silver bell, just like in the story. 

The entire experience is accompanied by music and dance and feels magical. The depot and the train cars are beautifully decorated, lending themselves to the festive atmosphere. This is one of our favorite things to do for Christmas in Texas with kids.

Besides the holiday train, Palestine has many other exciting holiday events. Downtown is very pretty with wreaths and displays everywhere. Another popular event is the Grinch at Texas Jail House in Palestine. This event is set up like a walk-through Christmas themed house.

The city also has excellent shopping and dining. It is also one of our most budget friendly East Texas Christmas getaways. Overall, Palestine makes for a great holiday vacation in December.

Christmas in Historic Jefferson 

Do us all a favor and plan a holiday time trip to Jefferson, Texas. This historic town is amongst the best places in Texas for Christmas for history lovers and is pretty amazing in its own way.

The city of Jefferson has plenty of fun holiday attractions for all ages. Love architecture and intriguing stories of the past? Make a beeline for the beautiful and one of its kind Candlelight Tour of Homes in this Texas town.

On the Candlelight Tour, you will see majestically decorated grand historic homes and mansions in Jefferson. Popular homes on the tour include the Black Swan, The Grove House, Angell Manor, and Scarlett O’Hardy’s.

Families with kids love the Christmas Express holiday train ride. This ride takes you through the pine forests of East Texas and along the Big Cypress Bayou. Marshall is our favorite Texas Christmas town when it comes to East Texas. It is located in the Piney Woods region and is home to one of the oldest Christmas festivals in Texas – the Wonderland of Lights Festival . This holiday event has an intriguing story, which you can read here .

The festival centers around the Old Harrison County Courthouse building located in Whetstone Square. The courthouse is beautifully decorated with glowing, glittering strings of lights and looks out of this world when lit up at night. 

Along with the courthouse, the entire downtown Marshall is transformed into an enchanting holiday village full of lights, decorations, and the holiday spirit. Walk around the courthouse to enjoy the postcard perfect views from around the town square.

Stop for gifts at The Weisman. Enjoy a horse carriage ride around the town. Other Christmas activities in Marshall, Texas include ice skating, holiday train rides, Santa’s Village, a vintage carousel, and Christmas market. All of these attractions make Marshall one of the best places to visit in Texas during Christmas.

Christmas in Longview 

Longview, Texas is one of the most underrated places to spend Christmas. This East Texas town enjoys mild temperatures in December. The city is decorated with lights and festive decorations – but that’s not your primary destination!

Located just outside of Longview, you will find one of the best, hidden Christmas attractions in Texas – Carmela’s Magical Santa Land Drive-Thru Holiday Lights. This is a gigantic, Texas-sized event that began as the efforts of a single woman for the whole community.

Even today the lights display remains private and free for all visitors. The lights grow bigger and fancier every year. Kids love seeing the enormous synchronized light show that spreads out over several acres.

Along with the drive thru area, the event also has a zone where you can park and explore on foot. This section has plenty of fun activities including photos with Santa, hot chocolate booths, kettlecorn, and a holiday market – the perfect East Texas Christmas Vacation.

Wimberley’s Twinkling Trail of Lights

Charming Wimberley is one of the best Texas Christmas towns to visit for its annual Trail of Lights holiday event. The event takes place at EmilyAnn Theater and Gardens. During the holiday season, the garden is transformed to a winter wonderland and the sparkling lights are everywhere. The best part is that this is a free event and fun to attend.

One of the highlights is the Ye Olde Yule Log which burns brightly in the center of the garden. This is great to gather around and enjoy hot chocolate and marshmallows. The 6 acres of trails also have many other attractions including Santa Claus and live entertainment.

Wimberley’s commitment to supporting local businesses is evident during the Christmas season. Visitors can find one-of-a-kind gifts crafted by local artists, from handmade ornaments to beautifully crafted pottery at Wimberley market days. Wimberley makes an excellent winter day trip from Houston or Austin area and should be on your list during the holiday season.

Starry Oil Boom of Kilgore 

Christmas Under the Stars is an annual event in Kilgore, Texas that celebrates the city’s oil heritage. The event features the city’s oil derricks decorated with lit up stars and Christmas lights, as well as a festive market and lights display.

Though the oil derricks are no longer the main source of Kilgore’s income, they remain an important part of the city’s identity. Christmas Under the Stars is a reminder of Kilgore’s rich history and heritage, and one of the unique Texas Christmas events.

Kilgore is one of the best places to go in Texas for Christmas for all proud Texans and those who like to go off the beaten path. Be sure to see the museums and explore downtown while you’re visiting Kilgore.

Johnson City’s Historic Christmas 

Johnson City, in the Texas Hill Country, celebrates Christmas in a rather presidential manner. After all, it was the hometown of Lyndon B Johnson – America’s 36th President! The city’s rich history can be observed not just in its historic buildings and sites but also in its historic Christmas celebrations.

Here you will find a variety of traditional holiday events including a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, nativity scenes, horse-drawn carriage rides in downtown, hayrides that are a hit with families, Christmas parades, gorgeous holiday lights, and even Grinchmas!

The downtown festivities are a part of Lights Spectacular – a gorgeous Lone Star sized event that drapes the Blanco County Courthouse in a curtain of twinkling lights. The lights also shine all over Main Street, storefronts, and parks downtown.

The Pedernales Electric Cooperative Headquarters also has a fascinating light display in Johnson City called the PEC Lights. During the free event, you will see hundred of year old live oak trees shining under the light or a million strings. Don’t forget to take a camera and take family photos when visiting the Johnson City Christmas lights.

Visitors can also tour the Historic LBJ Ranch at night to see it decorated in magnificent lights. This was the childhood home of President Lyndon B Johnson and has varied attractions including a living history farm and hiking trails. Hands down, Johnson City is the best place to spend Christmas in Texas Hill Country because of its rich history.

North Pole in Brownsville 

Do you want to visit the North Pole without leaving Texas? Stay warm and cozy while meeting Santa Claus? Visit the Holiday Village in the city of Brownsville , located south on the Texas Mexico border.

This Brownsville holiday event takes place in Dean Porter Park in the center of downtown. The traditional holiday village features several Christmas inspired cottages. You will find Santa’s Workshop, a bakery that bakes delicious gingerbread cookies, a general store, and even the North Pole Bank!

This walk-through attraction looks right out of the pages of a Christmas story book. But the best part? Holiday Village is completely free to visit! Kids love seeing the small colorful buildings and exploring the village.

The city does a fantastic job arranging the event every year. It also hosts several other events including a Christmas Market on Main Street, an ice skating rink, as well as a light up parade.

Texas is filled to the brim with breathtaking countrysides, significant historical attractions, diverse museums, pristine city parks, suburban shopping meccas, mouthwatering barbecue and more. U.S. News took into account traveler sentiment and expert analysis to come up with the best places to visit in Texas. Big Bend National Park

This sprawling metropolis promises a jam-packed itinerary for every type of traveler, whether you're traveling with the family or on a romantic getaway . Explore the many museums, parks and historical sites the city has to offer, including the infamous Dealey Plaza, where JFK was assassinated, or get to know Dallas' vibrant, artsy neighborhoods like Trinity Groves and the Design District. And if you're visiting during football season, catch a Dallas Cowboys game to see state pride at its best. However you spend your time, you'll be surrounded by top-notch restaurants and a surplus of shopping options.

Every year, more than 500,000 people visit this national park along the U.S.-Mexico border to spend some time outdoors. Big Bend National Park features hundreds of miles of paved and dirt roads for scenic drives, as well as 150-plus miles of hiking trails. While exploring the park's sections of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Chisos Mountains and the Rio Grande, keep your eyes peeled for more than 450 bird species, including several kinds of woodpeckers, thrashers and sparrows. At night, camp (or glamp) under the moonlight to see why Big Bend is one of the best dark sky parks in the country.

For a different kind of Texas vacation, skip the state's main cities and beach towns in favor of a visit to Fredericksburg. This Texas Hill Country locale is known for its superb shops, rich German roots and tasty wines. When you're not enjoying some retail therapy on Main Street, learn about the town's connection to Germany at the Pioneer Museum. Don't forget to sample some of Fredericksburg's delectable vino before you leave; you'll have your pick of more than 50 wineries and tasting rooms in and around Fredericksburg.

Historical relics like The Alamo are no doubt San Antonio's biggest draw. However, you don't need to be a history buff to enjoy all the city has to offer. The River Walk makes for a soothing stroll along the San Antonio River, while the expansive Brackenridge Park offers a variety of attractions and amenities. Active travelers can practice their swing at the park's golf course and ball fields, nature lovers can pass the time in its stunning Japanese Tea Garden and families can get an up-close look at the on-site San Antonio Zoo's animals. Before you leave, sample a San Antonio staple – the puffy taco.

If hiking is one of your favorite pastimes, then you'll want to venture to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. This national park by the southern Texas-New Mexico border houses eight of the state's 10 highest peaks, including the iconic El Capitan, and features 80-plus miles of hiking paths, such as traveler-approved routes like Devil's Hall and the Guadalupe Peak Trail. Although the scenery is stunning year-round, for extra-memorable vistas, visit in fall when the park's tree leaves turn vivid shades of red, orange and yellow.

This small town on Mustang Island (about 40 miles northeast of Corpus Christi) provides ample opportunities for fun in the sun. When you're not sunbathing, parasailing or splashing around at the beach, put your angling skills to the test in the "Fishing Capital of Texas" or sign up for a dolphin-watching cruise. You'll also want to keep an eye out for the endangered whooping crane and other birds in this bird-watching paradise. If you love festivals, time your visit to coincide with one of Port Aransas' events, which focus on everything from art to music to food.

Texas is home to some prime Gulf Coast shorelines , and South Padre Island is considered one of the best. South Padre offers 34 miles of relaxing beaches along the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. While the island has a reputation for being a prime party spot for spring breakers, the rest of the year it's favored by families thanks to its affordability and bevy of kid-friendly attractions. Head to Sea Turtle, Inc. to learn about local sea turtle rehabilitation efforts, or visit Beach Park Waterpark to cool off on a hot day.

The capital city's colorful character takes Texas to an entirely new level. Austin offers loads in the way of culture, cuisine and natural scenery. While here, enjoy unique outdoor areas like Zilker Metropolitan Park (where you'll find the natural Barton Springs Pool), various museums and plenty of delectable Tex-Mex joints. The best way to soak up Austin's contagious energy is to visit Sixth Street. This music hub is packed with bars, restaurants and live music venues that have helped Austin earn its "Live Music Capital of the World" moniker. For a souvenir, head to SoCo to pick up a pair of authentic cowboy boots.

Originally inhabited by wild horses, the aptly named Mustang Island is now known for its miles of beaches and outdoor activities. On this 18-mile-long barrier island, which sits about 30 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, visitors will find Mustang Island State Park, a popular place to go mountain biking, kayaking and swimming. The park is also home to endangered sea turtles and more than 400 bird species, making it an excellent destination to spot wildlife, and boasts 5 miles of beaches. For more outdoor recreation outside the park, travelers can visit North Packery Beach to enjoy water sports like kiteboarding, wakeboarding and surfing.

Once a lesser-known, low-key getaway, this small town just north of Mexico now attracts space enthusiasts thanks to its SpaceX launch site. Beachgoers will still find plenty of allure with Boca Chica's 8-mile-long stretch of sand, but remember to bring your own equipment since water sports rentals like surfboards and kiteboards are not available on-site. You'll also want to plan ahead, as the beach is closed near rocket launch dates. While here, save time for wildlife watching, as the area is a haven for various bird and sea turtle species, particularly in spring and fall.

Renowned as one of America's top barbecue destinations, Houston offers travelers a finger-licking good time. But did you know Houston is also a culture hub? Within the urban sprawl, visitors can check out museums galore, from NASA's impressive Johnson Space Center to the quirky Art Car Museum. Many of the city's restaurants and shops are also covered in Instagram-worthy murals. Plus, with the world-class Houston Zoo , verdant Buffalo Bayou Park and a children's museum, Houston is an ideal (and affordable) vacation spot for families. Consider purchasing a CityPASS to save even more coin.

Corpus Christi features several scenic shorelines and can't-miss attractions to keep you entertained for days. Popular stretches of sand in this Gulf Coast city include McGee Beach and North Beach, which is also home to two of Corpus Christi's most visited sights, the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington. Additional museums and entertainment venues can be found in SEA, the city's Sports, Entertainment and Arts District. Meanwhile, music fans can visit several sites dedicated to the emblematic Tejano singer Selena, including the Selena Museum and the Mirador de la Flor memorial.

Sitting in between Fort Worth and Dallas (roughly 23 miles from both), Grapevine delights all travelers, whether they're outdoorsy types, historians or wine lovers. Lake Grapevine is a popular boating and fishing spot, while its surrounding trails attract hikers and bikers. Meanwhile, history buffs can engage in 19th-century heritage events at Nash Farm or ride into the past on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. As its name suggests, Grapevine is also home to several tasting rooms along Texas' Urban Wine Trail. What's more, with some of the best water parks in Texas , an aquarium and a LEGOLAND Discovery Center, Grapevine is incredibly kid-friendly.

Located about 50 miles southeast of Houston, Galveston attracts Texans looking for a convenient place to spend some time at the beach. The island features family-friendly spots like Stewart Beach (with amenities like lifeguards, volleyball courts and a playground) and Pleasure Pier (which features an array of games and rides). Meanwhile, Schlitterbahn Waterpark offers yet another place to play. Away from the sand, visitors can explore the shop-, restaurant- and nightclub-filled Strand District, named a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved Victorian architecture. Travelers will also want to check out other historical sights, such as Bishop's Palace and Moody Mansion.

Easy to reach by ferry from Port Aransas, this former ranch is now a prime beach destination. Because San José Island is privately owned, the island's only publicly accessible land is its 21-mile stretch of unspoiled sand situated below the vegetation line. But visitors will find plenty to do on the beach. The island's more than 600 kinds of fish and roughly 300 bird species make it a terrific place to go fishing and birding. Other popular pastimes here include shelling and surfing.

14 Gorgeous Texas Beaches To Visit During Winter

Texas has 367 miles of coastline. It offers miles of remote, shell-studded beaches, mangrove marshes, mountainous dunes, and tidal salt flats. You’ll find beaches with hundreds of beach house vacation rentals, water sports activities, and deep-sea fishing charters. And winter is the best time to explore Texas beaches, when the crowds are sparse and the weather is moderate, in the low 70s.

I’ve explored beaches from the tip of Texas at Boca Chica to Corpus Christi, Galveston, and up the twisted oaks and salt domes of High Island toward Louisiana. Here are my favorite Texas beaches to visit during winter — listed geographically, south to north.

1. Boca Chica Beach

At the very tip of South Texas, Boca Chica Beach lies about 23 miles east of Brownsville, where Highway 4 dead-ends at the Gulf of Mexico. Mangrove marshes, clay dunes, and tidal salt flats surround the eight-mile beach at Boca Chica, a national wildlife refuge. Rustic and remote, the area is perfect for bird watching, fishing, swimming, and surfing. The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle comes ashore to nest in spring and summer.

These days, you might hear a rumble or two from Elon Musk’s SpaceX South Texas Launch site at Boca Chica, called Starbase . NASA selected Musk’s Starship to be the lunar lander in the future Artemis Program; Musk’s future goal is Martian exploration. 

Pro Tip: Travel to the mouth of the Rio Grande to see the border wall extend about 30 feet out into the ocean.

2. South Padre Island

South Padre Island is the number one beach vacation destination on the Texas coast. The 34-mile-long barrier island hosts beachfront hotels, condos, vacation rentals, RV parks, plus deep-sea or bay fishing. Enjoy family-fun water activities like surfing, diving, snorkeling, parasailing, sailboat rides, jet skis, a dolphin watch cruise, and anything else you can dream up.

If you are looking for solitude and peace, wintertime is a great time to visit when the weather is in the high 60s and the low 70s. The peak season is March during spring break and summertime when school is out. The water here is clean and aqua clear, and if you didn’t know any better, you’d think you were in Cancun or Cozumel.

Pro Tip: From Brownsville, take Highway 48 across the bridge to South Padre Island.

3. Padre Island National Seashore

The most extended undeveloped barrier island globally, Padre Island National Seashore separates the Laguna Madre, one of the world’s saltiest lagoons, from the Gulf of Mexico. Padre Island National Seashore protects more than 70 miles of majestic coastline, massive dunes, prairies, tidal flats, and wildlife. The area is the protected nesting ground for the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and a sanctuary for more than 380 bird species.

Winter is the time to visit, when daytime temperatures are low to mid-70s and people are sparse. Camping is available at five campgrounds on a first come, first served basis, permit required, with no RV hook-ups available.

If you’re looking to visit during summer, check this NPS resource for hatchling Kemp’s ridley sea turtle releases between mid-June and August.

4. Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island is an 18-mile-long barrier island near Port Aransas, east of Corpus Christi. A state park with five miles of spectacular sandy beach, it’s a great place to swim, surf, build a sandcastle, fish in the bay, birdwatch, camp, and kayak. Camping is available at 50 primitive drive-up sites or 48 sites with water and electricity, restrooms, and showers with hot water.

The Mustang Island Paddling Trail for kayaks and canoes has some of the best shallow-water fishing in the state.

Pro Tip: You can access the park from both Corpus Christi and Rockport.

5. Corpus Christi Beaches

The downtown Corpus Christi McGee Beach along scenic Shoreline Boulevard is within walking distance of several hotels and restaurants. Rent a cabana, umbrella, and chairs, or bikes and scooters.

Just a short drive across the Harbor Bridge, North Beach anchors the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington with a place to walk, skate, or cycle on the promenade. 

Editor’s Note: Perk up at the mention of an aquarium? The Lone Star State has plenty to offer, and the Texas State Aquarium made Janie’s list of the best aquariums in Texas .

Whitecap Beach is a mile-and-a-half-long beach in Corpus Christi on North Padre Island. It’s great in the winter due to the milder weather, but note that from April to August, the undeveloped and unspoiled beach offers the best surfing.

North and South Packery Jetty Beach is a sandy oasis between Mustang Island and Padre Island, with jetties extending out into the azure water. The south side is less crowded, making it a wonderful place to fish, swim, snorkel, and build sandcastles.

6. Port Aransas Beach

Famous for its pirates in the 18th century, Port Aransas , a small town on Mustang Island, northeast of Corpus Christi, swells to 60,000 during its peak season: spring break and summer. Avoid those peak seasons by coming here in the winter.

Port A boasts 18 smooth miles of beach where you can find your perfect beach house. Dive in and experience surfing, jet skiing, pirate cruises, sunset sails, parasailing, or deep-sea fishing. Learn about sea turtle rehabilitation, bird refuges, kayaking, and Texas SandFest , the annual sandcastles competition.

Pro Tip: Cook Your Catch locations like Fins Grill & Icehouse or Castaways Seafood and Grill will cook your freshly caught, freshly cleaned fish and prepare it to your liking, a unique “sea-to-table-experience.”

7. San Jose Island

A short ferry trip from Port Aransas, San Jose Island is a privately owned, uninhabited wildlife sanctuary. St. Jo’s beach is 21 miles long with fine white sand and lots of colorful shells, and it is known as The Fishing Capital of Texas. Catch a passenger ferry from Fisherman’s Wharf in Port A and fish from the rocky edges of the North Jetty. Catch redfish, flounder, speckled trout, or charter a deep-sea fishing boat from the pier.

8. IB Magee Beach

On the northern end of Mustang Island, on the other side of the rolling dunes of Port A, is IB Magee Beach . You’ll find almost 3,500 vacation rentals in IB Magee Beach Park. The park offers 75 RV sites with water and electricity, complete with hot showers and restrooms. Don’t miss the 1,240-foot-long, lighted Horace Caldwell Pier on the northern point of Mustang Island, perfect for 24-hour fishing. 

9. Rockport Beach

Texas’ first Blue Wave Beach, Rockport Beach is certified by the Clean Beaches Coalition, a network of organizations and individuals committed to promoting clean, healthy, and well-managed beaches worldwide. Rockport is famous for great fishing, bird watching, and beautiful coastal climate.

On this mile-long sandy beach, you’ll find 65 quaint picnic areas with shade, grills, picnic tables, and volleyball courts.

10. Matagorda Island

Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area is a 38-mile-long uninhabited island with a Texas Parks and Wildlife outpost. Today, traverse the bay and the 2.5 miles across the island to the 1852 historic lighthouse, standing 91 feet above sea level, that guided ships through Pass Cavallo on their way to Indianola.

The island is home to 19 threatened bird species, migratory birds, white-tailed deer, alligators, and other wildlife. Bring your water and supplies to the Sunday Beach area, where camping is allowed.

11. Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach at Freeport stretches four miles between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico. It has vacation rentals, hotels, motels, and beach houses. Visit the crabbing pier and the Freeport jetties, where you can watch the large ships come and go or toss in a line and do some night fishing.

12. Galveston Island Beaches

Galveston Island is Texas’ charming retreat, 50 miles south of Houston, where we celebrate Mardi Gras, Dickens on the Strand in December, visit historic architecture like Bishop’s Palace and the largest collection of Victorian homes in America. The cruise docks host Royal Caribbean, Disney, and Carnival cruise lines. You can find hundreds of beach houses and vacation homes for rent along the 27-mile island. I like to visit Galveston beaches in the off season (not spring break or the summer) when the beaches are not crowded and you can find seashells on the beach. 

San Luis Pass Beach , a 15-acre bay park, once known as the back door into Galveston Bay for pirates and smugglers, is located west of the Brazoria-Galveston County toll bridge at San Luis Pass. You’ll find full-service RV camping, cabins, restrooms, boat launch, and paved parking.

Jamaica Beach , with drive-on-the-beach access, makes a beach trip very easy with grandkids. Choose from a wide selection of vacation rentals on or near the beach.

Pirates Beach features over 700 beach properties near Galveston Island Country Club facing the gulf.

Seawall Urban Park , America’s longest continuous seawall, offers a 10-mile shoreline. You can bike, peddle cars, swim, make sandcastles, and people watch.

Beachtown Development is a quiet, uncrowded beach that is safe for swimming. Victorian homes offer many rental choices, plus stunning scenery. Access to Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn make this beach a hidden oasis.

Stewart Beach is a family-friendly beach Between the seawall and Broadway Avenue, with lifeguards on duty. Access an outdoor pavilion, chair, and umbrella rentals. The Pleasure Pier has a colossal roller coaster, rides, and games. Stay nearby at the historic Hotel Galvez , my favorite.

East Beach , the only public beach where alcohol is allowed, hosts concerts, festivals, and a boardwalk. A pavilion, playground, and restrooms make this beach kid-friendly too.

13. Crystal Beach On The Bolivar Peninsula

Stretching seven miles along Texas State Highway 87, you can drive on Crystal Beach . Enjoy free camping, fishing, birding, and hunting for shells during, free from the summer crowds. Stay at beachfront and bayside vacation rentals during the off season, when rentals are easily available. Access Crystal Beach on Bolivar Peninsula via the Bolivar free ferry for a trip across the bay from Galveston. There are no ferry lines during the off seasons, and you might see your ferry escorted by dolphins. 

14. High Island

High Island is a quiet east Texas town, on the edge of a vast marsh, with twisted oaks clinging to the rims of salt domes 40 feet above the gulf. To the east, long, shell-studded beaches stretch 100 miles into Louisiana. There are four bird sanctuaries — the largest is Smith Oaks, with four lakes and nests of herons, egrets, and roseate spoonbills.

• So Clutch, the owners of the Concrete Cowboy, Clutch Bar, and a host of establishments in other US cities, opened the doors of the  Sugar Room  on Washington Avenue. The cocktail lounge hidden inside a local bakery features a glamorous selection of drinks as well as tasty treats.
• Tucked away in the corner of Cantina Barba’s back patio is a scanty, nondescript, somewhat rusty container. The door on which advertises “ Mijo’s Mezcal Bar ” – which, to our knowledge, lays the smallest bar in Houston.
• Relive the ’20s and all of its splendor at the  Daisy Buchanan Lounge , from the group behind Gatsby’s Prime Steakhouse. The flashy new 52-seat lounge, located at what was once Bar Victor on 4321 Montrose Blvd, is made in the image of the era infamously captured in Scott F. Fitzgerald’s masterpiece,  The Great Gatsby.

Things to Do in Dallas and Fort Worth in December

Tours, Holiday Lights, Parades, and Charity Runs

Numerous holiday events and a relatively mild climate make Dallas–Forth Worth (DFW) an attractive place to visit in December. While the Northeast is usually being battered by snowstorms, the average high in DFW throughout December is a comfortable 58 degrees Fahrenheit, warm enough to walk around and enjoy the holiday lights on display without freezing. Get a taste for a real North Texan Christmas by taking part in any one of the many events that DFW has to offer.

Dallas Holiday Parade

The Dallas Holiday Parade kicks off the holiday season. One of the largest parades in the United States, the parade attracts a crowd of more than 500,000 spectators. The parade features spirited marching bands, famous characters, magical holiday floats, larger-than-life balloons, and much more.

The parade is always on the first Saturday of December and begins at 10 a.m. The starting point is at Commerce and Houston streets, and it continues through downtown Dallas. Attendees have the option to purchase a bleacher seat if you want a reserved spot, or you can show up on the morning of the parade and find a free place to sit along the parade route.

Homes for the Holidays Tour

Each year the Armstrong Bradfield Preschool Association hosts a Holiday Home Tour as a fundraiser to earn money for local clasrooms, showcasing four different homes of varying styles in the Park Cities area in the center of Dallas.

Homeowners can volunteer their house for the day, which are architecturally impressive and ornately decorated for Christmas. This year's tour on December 6, 2019, features homes like a historic facade with a modernly designed interior and a Greek Revival by a renowned 1920s architect. Participants can shop at the Christmas market with goods from local vendors and enjoy food catered by neighborhood Mexican restaurant, Tulum.

BMW Dallas Marathon

Formerly known as the White Rock Marathon, you can lace up your running shoes and enjoy the BMW full marathon, half marathon, and five-person relay through Dallas . The racecourse highlights iconic landmarks throughout the city and features hundreds of thousands of spectators cheering on participants. As Texas' oldest marathon, the race attracts runners from every state and across the globe each December. 

The race always takes place on the second Sunday of December, and pre-registration is required in order to participate.

Jingle Bell Run

The Dallas Jingle Bell Run benefiting the Trinity Strand Trail and the Mavericks Foundation begins from the Hilton Anatole on December 20, 2019. This is a festive family-friendly event with a nighttime 5K race, 1-mile fun run, and a lively post-race party. Participants come dressed in their spirited holiday attire and get a pair of jingle bells and glow sticks to "jingle all the way" through the race. Carolers and music are along the racecourse.

The post-race party is held in the Chantilly Ballroom of the Hilton Anatole with a live performance by the Mavs Maniacs, photo opportunities with the Dallas Mavericks Dancers, and complimentary beverages and snacks.

Holiday Shows

The Dallas and Fort Worth area features a number of festive plays, concerts, and musicals that offer something for everyone, from a variety of performances of "A Christmas Carol" and Christmas concerts to rock performances and a staging of "The Nutcracker" performed by puppets.

If you're a fan of Christmastime music, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra always puts on a variety of holiday-themed shows in December. The Christmas Pops Concert is one of their annual shows, plus other favorites like "Fiesta Navidad!"

The Dallas Children's Theater puts on an annual holiday show for your kids as well. For the 2019 season, get tickets for the children's book classic, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar Christmas Show."

Trains at NorthPark Center

The Trains at NorthPark

The Trains of NorthPark Center   offers train lovers over 1,800 feet of train track that winds through miniature landmarks like Reunion Tower, the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and the Golden Gate Bridge. More than 40 locomotives pull train cars around the track to the delight of kids and adults. Visit the display on the second level of the NorthPark shopping center, beginning November 16, 2019, through January 5, 2020.

Since 1987, the trains have raised more than $13 million for the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, which has helped more than 37,000 families.

Holiday at the Arboretum

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden presents Holiday at the Arboretum featuring the return of the 12 Days of Christmas outdoor exhibit from November 9, 2019, until December 31, 2019. Twelve different Victorian-style gazebos each depict a different line from the classic holiday carol, "12 Days of Christmas." At the center of the exhibits stands a huge 30-foot decorated tree.

Visitors can also take part in a variety of other holiday events throughout December at the arboretum, such as Christkindlmarket Treasures, holiday tea, and visits from Santa.

Prairie Lights

From Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve, enjoy Prairie Lights , a two-mile stretch of decorations and festive fun featuring over 4 million lights, hundreds of new displays, an all-new holiday magic light show, a snow maze, walk-through lighted displays, pictures with Santa, seasonal food, and family fun. About halfway through the drive, the Holiday Village has Santa, carnival rides, snacks, and souvenirs.  

Long lines are expected at this popular north Texas event, especially on weekends before Christmas. A fastpass admission option is also available if you prefer to pay more and skip the wait.

Six Flags' "Holiday in the Park"

During select days from November to early January, Holiday in the Park at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas, twinkles with Christmas lights. It's the most magical time of the year filled with enchanting experiences—when rollercoasters mix with a giant dose of Santa Claus. The breathtaking winter wonderland features a variety of interactive activities that capture the holiday spirit.

New Year's Eve Parties

The Dallas and Fort Worth area has a number of options for you to ring in the New Year in style. Enjoy a rockin' New Year's Eve show at the Dallas House of Blues or head over to the world's largest honky-tonk at Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth for their New Year's Eve show. There is no shortage of options for where to spend your last night of the year in the DFW area.

At first glance, Terlingua looks like the set of an old western movie–but this was once a very real mining town.

Today, Terlingua has come slightly back to life thanks to the tourist trade and its annual chili cook-off, but a visit here still, in many ways, feels like looking backward in time.

Visit the smallest Prada store in the world in Marfa.

Most prominently found in Fayette County, these antique churches may look unassuming from the outside, but are stunningly beautiful, with intricately painted facades, on the inside.

Find Europe in Texas.

London, Athens, Florence, Dublin, Paris, and more all have a Texas-style counterpart on this side of the pond.

Some of the towns aren’t all that interesting beyond the name, but others have great roadside Texas attractions ( like Paris’ Eiffel Tower ) and still others are fabulous places to visit in their own right (like the charming town of Dublin).

Enjoy a dash of whimsy in Wimberley.

As the home of two of the Hill Country’s most beloved swimming holes (the Blue Hole and Jacob’s Well), Wimberley is bound to be a delight–add it a charming downtown that is practically exploding with boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, and you have a near-perfect Hill Country town to explore.

Be sure to track down at least a few of Wimberley’s adorable (or as they would say, “bootiful”) painted boot statues while you’re there!

Learn about Spindletop in Beaumont.

On January 10, 1901, the Lucas Gusher erupted into the air, spewing oil for nine straight days–and so began the Texas oil boom.

The drillers, in this case, were looking for water. But Spindletop, as the event came to be known, turned attentions to oil, and quickly brought wealth and fortune-seekers to Beaumont and beyond.

Today, visitors can learn about this integral history to the state of Texas at the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum, a recreated early-20th century town.

Get a new angle on Texas’ giant skies at the McDonald Observatory.

Located in west Texas, the McDonald Observatory allows visitors to access one of the most impressive views of the night sky imaginable, and a visit here is a special addition to any Texas bucket list!

Browse the Round Top Antiques Fair.

Three times a year, the Round Top Antiques Fair descends on Round Top, Texas, and it is the perfect destination for those in pursuit of the weird, wacky, and wonderful.

From dawn to dusk, Thursday-Sunday before the first Monday of each and every month, the self-proclaimed largest flea market in the world is open in Canton, Texas!

Six Flags may be a national theme park brand now, but it all started in Arlington, Texas, with Six Flags Over Texas.

Climb the Port Isabel Lighthouse.

The charming Port Isabel Lighthouse dates to 1852, and a mere 75 steps will deliver you to the top, where you can admire beautiful views of the coast and the Queen Isabella Causeway, as well as South Padre Island in the distance!

Attend a music festival.

While there is a near-limitless choice depending on the time of year, music preference, and even how many crowds you want to tolerate, there’s no doubt that Austin’s SXSW is the most iconic music festival in the state.

Hit up Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels.

Schlitterbahn may be a chain of water parks now, but the original location in New Braunfels has been open since 1979, and visiting is a Texas childhood right of passage!

Parts of the park are fed by the Comal River, rather than the standard chlorinated water typical of water parks, and the award-winning park is one of the best family attractions in Texas.

Drive through enough of Texas’ small towns, and you’ll start to notice something interesting about them: so many seem to boast an intricate, beautiful courthouse in the center of town (unsurprisingly, they’re often made of limestone).

And, of course, Texas’ major cities tend to have incredibly beautiful courthouses as well.

Caldwell County Courthouse in Lockhart, Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio, Ellis County Courthouse in Waxahachie, and Dallas County Courthouse in Dallas are just a few that are considered exceptionally lovely in the Lone Star State!

Buy some boots!

If you’ve ever wanted to own a pair of cowboy boots, there’s nowhere better to buy them than during a memorable Texas vacation.

Prices range from similar to a standard pair of shoes that you buy off the shelf all the way up to thousands of dollars for a custom-made pair (that could take months or years to arrive), depending on how dedicated you are to acquiring the perfect pair.

Check out the Dutch Windmill Museum in Nederland.

In the late 19th century, Nederland, Texas was settled by people from Holland (in other words, the inspiration behind the name “Nederland” is quite obvious!).

In a tribute to their homeland, the new residents of Texas erected a beautiful replica of a Dutch windmill, and you can visit it today when exploring the best things to do in Texas.

Yee Hah, there is endless FUN to be had in Texas, and we didn’t even include Dime Box, Muleshoe or Bear Creek.

I did not know Wimberley did boots. I know San Angelo does sheep and another town does horse but I don’t remember which. Is there a list (or can you put it together) of towns that do these kinds of statues all over the place?

Hamilton Pool is a nature reserve located in Travis County Park. This is one of the most epic things to do in Texas during your stay! It’s so popular that they require a reservation before you are able to show up, and you have to be prepared for reservations to fill up early!

Hamilton Pool is home to a 50-foot waterfall that will be the perfect subject of any picture, or provide the perfect background for your group photos!

Hamilton Pool is also home to the Golden-cheeked Warbler and many other various bird species. The Golden-cheeked Warbler is even pictured on their Travis County Park logo!

This is one sight you will want at the top of your itinerary!

Explore The Small Towns

One thing you have to do while in Texas is explore the small towns !

You can visit Luckenbach with a population of only 3 people, or visit the popular Prada location in Marfa! No matter which small town you choose to explore, you will find a uniqueness that can only be found in that particular town!

Many of the small towns are located near each other so you can make it a weekend trip, or take a few days and stretch from Dripping Springs to Nacogdoches!

Exploring the small towns in Texas is one way to find some of the most hidden gems that state has to offer!

Haunted Texas Road Trip

Now this one might now be for the faint of heart. A Haunted Texas Road Trip is the perfect way to test your limits and experience something you just can’t explain!

The most notable stops are the Yorktown Memorial Hospital, Lobo, Marfa, and Terlingua. Each stop has an unexplainable feeling that will make your trip memorable.

While the Marfa Prada store seems like a great place to stop, the city has an unexplainable phenomenon called the Marfa Lights which are floating bright orbs that no one has been able to explain. Not to mention in Lobo, the town has been abandoned so the isolation you might feel here will have the hairs standing on the back of your neck!

We guarantee you will want to stick around during this road trip and see what phenomena you can experience.

See The Bluebonnets

Of course one of the things in Texas you have to do is stop and look at the Bluebonnets! The official state flower is an eye-catching experience as the areas they are located create blue fields!

You can visit the Bluebonnet House in Marble Falls, or head to Ennis, just south of Dallas, to travel through the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas! In Ennis, you will see the official Texas Bluebonnet Trail and will experience hundreds of beautiful Bluebonnets!

You also have to stop in Burnet, the Official Bluebonnet Capital of Texas! If there’s any place to see the glorious fields of Bluebonnets, it’s Burnet.

Gorman Falls Waterfall

If you find yourself around Wichita, Texas, you must stop and see the Gorman Falls Waterfall!

This 650-foot waterfall is full of tiered cascading falls and is one of the most captivating things to do in Texas. This waterfall is positioned in Colorado Bend State Park, and you will have to pay the park’s entrance fee to view the falls, but it will be worth every penny!

You absolutely need to utilize the bridge and see that perfect viewing spot!

Swimming is not allowed here, but viewing the falls will make the mile-round trip hike from the parking lot completely worth it!

You can’t come to Texas without taking the time to visit Big Bend!

Located in Brewster County, Big Bend is often named “Texas’ Gift to the Nation.” You’ll have to make the trip to Big Bend National Park and spend time in the Chisos Mountains.

Here, you can stop and explore the Langford Hot Springs, or take a day hike through the park. The best time to visit Big Bend is the Spring or Fall so that it is not too hot or cold outside.

The beauty of Big Bend is one of the best things to experience in Texas, so don’t leave this off your itinerary!

Kayak at Nichol’s Landing Paddle Trail

Kayakers traveling to Texas will definitely want to add this kayaking hot spot to their list of things to do in Texas!

Nichol’s Landing Paddle Trail is located at the Upper Guadalupe River and is comprised of about 10 miles of kayaking trails.

Here you’ll see beautiful Cypress Trees and have plenty of trails to relax and spend time in the water. This kayaking hot spot is great for a 3-6 hour experience, so make sure to plan to spend a good portion of your day here!

The trail ranges from rapid and rushing to calm and serene so all skills are necessary when experiencing this trail!

Dallas Museum Of Art

The Dallas Museum of Art is one of the most elaborate museums in Texas. With art from the third millennium BC stretching all the way to present day, you’re sure to see a lot of history and even a few famous artists.

At the Dallas Museum of Art, you can see works from Jason Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Vincent van Gogh. These works have people traveling from all over to see these famous works!

They also have programs for kids and plenty of lecture series with famous authors and artists. There’s a little something for everyone at this Texas museum!

Boca Chica Beach

Located in the southernmost part of Texas, this beach is considered a hidden Texas gem.

This beach is located near Corpus Christi and South Padre Island with a huge view of the border of Mexico! At Boca Chica Beach, you’ll find the clearest water in Texas. If that doesn’t sound like reason enough to stop and check out the beach, there’s always the special wildlife to entice you!

This beach is home to the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle, and every Spring and Summer they nest on Boca Chica Beach!

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

One thing you have to experience while in Texas is the Guadalupe Mountains, National Park!

This Texas park is known for having the 4 highest peaks in Texas, and the stargazing on a clear night that is unlike anywhere else! From here, you can see over 11,000 stars and have a perfect view of the Milky Way!

You can also hike any of their numerous trails, or spend a few days camping on the land. If you’re crunched for time, you can visit their visitor’s center and spend some time in the museum!

The entrance fee to the park is $10, but worth every penny!

Castle Falkenstein

This Texas castle will feel straight out of a fairy tale!

This castle was created by Terry Young and his wife after a trip to Europe left them inspired to build a castle of their own in Texas.

Located in Burnet, part of Texas Hill Country, this castle is frequently used for privately hosted events, weddings, and even lodging rentals! If you’re looking for a fairy tale experience for your Texas trip, this castle is perfect for you!

Fall Foliage In Lost Maples State Park

If you find yourself in Texas during Fall, this location needs to be one of your first stops!

Here you’ll find Uvalde bigtooth maple trees that turn red, orange, and yellow during the fall season. The park even has a Fall Foliage Color Report that gets updated every week in November so that you can ensure you are going at a time when the colors are the most vibrant!

The park tends to fill to capacity quickly, especially the week of Thanksgiving, so make sure to head out there early!

San Antonio River Walk

The San Antonio River Walk is one of the most famous attractions in Texas!

The River Walk is home to numerous hotels and dining experiences that will put you right into the heart of the River Walk. The River Walk also hosts festivals and parades year round.

Some of the most notable parades are the Parade of Lanterns and the Holiday River Parade!

You can also kayak in the San Antonio River Walk between March and September!

Jacob’s Well

Jacob’s Well is located in Hays County and is one of the most popular places in Texas! The natural well area is roughly 81 acres and is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily!

Jacob’s Well is the second-largest submerged cave in Texas and at its deepest point reaches 140-feet deep! People from all over come here to swim, so much so that you have to make a reservation to swim in the well!

The allowed time for each swim reservation is 2 hours, so make sure you plan your day for this! You can also hike in this area, and you do not need a reservation to hike, only to swim!

A Fabulous Weekend Getaway

While in Texas, you must have a fabulous weekend getaway at The Driskill Hotel in Austin!

The Driskill Hotel is located on 6th Street, which is one of Austin’s most famous streets! This street is historic and is home to the Austin nightlife and culture! The hotel is within a 10-minute walk from the State Capital Building.

The hotel is extremely luxurious and you will feel like a royal for the entire duration of your stay! You won’t want to come to Austin without spending a weekend treating yourself to this experience!

Go Camping At Palo Duro Canyon State Park

You can’t come to Texas without a camping trip! The perfect place to pitch a tent is at Palo Duro Canyon State Park! This state park is truly one of the best things to do in Texas!

This area is known as the Grand Canyon of Texas. Located in the Texas Panhandle, this park offers campsites in multiple different areas! All campsites in the area offer electricity, but you can opt-out of using it to get the full camping experience!

Visit Jester King Brewery

Houston Museum Of Natural Science

One of the best things to do while in Texas is to visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science! The world around you will seem so much more interesting after a visit here!

There are many permanent exhibits here such as the Cabinet of Curiosities, Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals, and the Morian Hall of Paleontology!

Tour Kyle Field

Being in Texas, one of the first connections you might make is Texas football! That’s why you should take a tour at Kyle Field, the largest stadium in Texas!

This stadium is the largest ranked by its 102,000 capacity limit. It’s located at the Texas A&M campus in College Station.

The tour lasts between 45 to 60 minutes and is a cheap fun way to experience the largest home to Texas football!

Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch is one Texas location that you are able to leave your mark on the state!

Located in Amarillo, Cadillac Ranch is an iconic fixture of Cadillac vehicles stationed in the ground, with years of layering from past visitors. People come from all over to spray paint their own mark on a vehicle!

You can bring your own spray paint, or you may be lucky enough to find a can that was left behind by a previous visitor!

You can also visit the visitor center and buy jewelry made from paint chips that have come off the cars! There’s no record of how many layers of paint are currently on this fixture!

In 2019, this Texas aquarium was voted by USA Today as the number 4 aquarium in America!

One of the coolest things about this aquarium is the 4 bottlenose dolphins they house in their Dolphin Bay exhibit! They also have a Saving Sharks exhibit where you can track tagged sharks in real-time!

Other popular exhibits here are Jungle, Caribbean Sea, and Living Shores. Each with something to teach you about wildlife and oceanic life.

You’ll want to make sure to stop here at least once while in Texas!

Visit The Gaylord Texan At Christmas

A Texas Christmas that you’ll remember can happen at the Gaylord Texan!

While Texas isn’t known for snow, that isn’t true for the Gaylord Texan. During the holidays, this hotel offers snow tubbing, snow throwing, various snow slides, as well as its famous ICE! show.

The ICE! show is a 9-degree ice showing of a true winter wonderland. You’ll want to pack a coat and mittens for this experience!

One thing you need to do is.. remember the Alamo! You can’t come to Texas without stopping at this historic marker.

The Alamo is known as the Shrine of Texas Liberty, and there’s no doubt that this is a huge piece of Texas history! You’ll be able to take a guided tour and see everything the Alamo has to offer.

Make sure to walk through the Living History and talk to the Living Historians. Here you’ll get an up-close and personal take on what life was like during the 1800s and even learn about events surrounding the Battle of the Alamo in 1836!

As a native Texan I have fond memories of most of the these. Even though I spent most of my art education career taking my students to the Dallas Museum of Art, it is not my favorite museum in Texas. The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Kimbell in Ft Worth also have internationally acclaimed collections. Each have their collection of quality pieces and host international touring exhibits of masterpieces.

With a portion of proceeds benefitting Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas, the Holiday Lights & Ice event features a 4,000 square foot ice rink and a special "Winter Wonderland on Ice" kick-off production on Dec. 18 by Ice Couture, starring international dancers, show skaters and Austin's very own Chaparral Ice Skaters. Local Austinites, resort guests and Barton Creek Country Club members are invited to skate on the resort's indoor ice rink overlooking scenic hill country views and a display of twinkling lights. Holiday-inspired treats and hot beverages will be served along with ornament and gingerbread cookie decorating in Santa's Workshop.

Hill Country Galleria

The Hill Country Galleria comes alive during the winter holidays, with a calendar of events for everyone. There are Meet and Greets with Santa every day through Christmas, as well as Holiday Sing-A-Longs, Gingerbread House workshops and more. The Sing-A-Long will be held with the Vintage 15 and their big band sound. Enjoy live music, meet Santa, and bring a blanket to sit back and sing along. Bring the kids to The Candy Jar and let them create their own gingerbread house masterpiece with mounds of candy at their disposal. Light bites & refreshments will be served. One of the things people like most is the Galleria's winter Snow Days. Every Saturday through December 19, snow production turns the place into a winter wonderland. Toss a snowball, build a snow man, make a snow angel, and take fun family photos.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Luminations at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a magical place. Thousands of luminaries and twinkling lights turn the center into a holiday wonderland during this Austin holiday tradition. Held on Saturday and Sunday, December 12 and 13, 2015 from 6 pm to 9 pm, the event costs $5 for adults and $3 for youth ages 5-17 (free for ages 4 and under). The gardens of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center of The University of Texas at Austin will be ablaze with thousands of twinkling lights and luminarias the second weekend in December, with visitors enjoying live holiday music, indoor kids' activities and more. Activities include live music, visits with Frosty the Snowman, children's crafts, holiday tree activity, warm kettle corn and more.

Recommended for Things to Do in December because : The Wildflower Center is often thought of as a spring activity, but it can be enjoyed year-round; and the winter holidays are the perfect time.

Austin Steam Train

The Austin Steam Train has long been a fun thing to do with kids — but just wait until they experience the North Pole Flyer! This two-and-a-half hour excursion features Santa and Mrs. Claus, storytelling, hot cocoa and a signature Christmas cookie. Each car is decorated for the season and the North Pole Flyer story is read live on board. While under way a Story Teller Elf will come to your car to read the story of the North Pole Flyer. Copies of the book are available for $5. Santa Claus is also on board every North Pole Flyer, walking through each car, greeting passengers young and old. Every child has an opportunity to visit with Santa, and receive special a gift. Mrs. Claus also walks through each car serving Christmas cookies and hot chocolate to all passengers. The North Pole Flyer departs from Cedar Park and travels to Bertram. The train does not de-board in Bertram, but only stops long enough for the crew to uncouple the locomotive, run it around the train on the scale track, then couple up to return to Cedar Park.

Long Center for the Performing Arts

The Long Center for the Performing Arts hosts the beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker, each year. Performed by Ballet Austin, The Nutcracker is the longest-running production of the seasonal classic in Texas. Stephen Mills' take on this timeless tale features a cast of hundreds of dancers, including the charming and talented students from the prestigious Ballet Austin Academy who share the spotlight with our professional company of artists. Celebrate the magic of the holidays by experiencing this sweet treat with your family and friends, featuring live accompaniment by Austin Symphony Orchestra. The Nutcracker runs from December 5-23, 2015. The Long Center is also the place to see other holiday performances such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Musical (playing November 27-29) and Conspirare Christmas with Matt Alber (December 7).

ZACH Theatre

If you love the performing arts, ZACH Theatre is the perfect place to spend some of your holiday season. For 2015, the hilarious, long-running Santaland Diaries is back, playing through December 27. Martin Burke stars as the ever-irreverent elf Crumpet in this outlandish and true tale penned by David Sedaris. Crumpet shows what it takes to juggle tiny tots and staggering Santas during a painfully festive time of the year. And to kick off the evening, chanteuse Meredith McCall and Martin take you on a sensational sleigh-ride of an all-new cabaret show created especially for ZACH. This merrily subversive and laugh 'til you cry evening will delight any adult audience. Also this season at ZACH is the classic A Christmas Carol, also running through December 27. Appropriate for ages five and up, this is the most popular show in ZACH's over 90-year history. ZACH's fresh take on A Christmas Carol features three soulful Ghosts making a joyful noise, while moving our hearts with the Cratchit family's love and Ebenezer Scrooge's miraculous transformation. ZACH's inspired adaptation of Charles Dickens' beloved classic juxtaposes a traditional Victorian setting and gorgeous period costumes with a modern musical score that spans genres and eras.

Chuy's Giving to Children Parade

This annual parade will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2015. Starting at 11 am at the State Capitol and marching down Congress Avenue, the Chuy's Giving to Children Christmas Parade collects toys for Operation Blue Santa. Bring a toy to give to the marchers in the parade and enjoy big inflatable balloons, holiday floats and children's characters. At a designated time during the Parade Procession, all units will stop to collect the toys. Santa's Helpers will line the parade route and help spectators give their toy. All toys will be distributed by the Operation Blue Santa Program to another child just in time for the holidays. Highlights of the parade will include giant inflatable balloons, festive holiday floats, famous children's characters, spectacular marching bands, cool classic cars and of course, Santa.

Austin Trail of Lights

The Austin Trail of Lights, powered by H-E-B, puts on its magnificent display by utilizing more than two million lights. More than 400,000 people visit the 50-plus displays and exhibits, and the event is made possible with the help of a thousand volunteers. This year the two-week event will continue past traditions from its 51-year history, as well as several new features. For the first time ever, attendees will find a classic carousel in Zilker Village, along with a new and improved Groovy Grove. Favorites will also return, including Santa's Workshop, the North Pole, the Yule Log, Candy Land and the Ferris Wheel (which will have a new home on Lou Neff Road). Each night will feature a different special event, such as turning the iconic Trail of Lights globe Longhorn burnt orange. The Zilker Tree Lighting will take place on Sunday, November 29. Some of Austin's favorite food trucks will be on the scene, from East Side King and Mighty Fine Burgers to Amy's Ice Cream and Funtastic Funnel Cakes. Additional fun can be had at the arts and crafts station, the Community Performance Stage which will feature more than 60 local performance groups, or by letting the kids write letters to Santa at the North Pole. H-E-B is sponsoring a Read 3 train to promote literacy, and will be giving every child who stops by the train a free book to take home. The official start to the Trail of Lights kicks off December 8 and runs through December 22.

HOUSTON – Hey there, fellow adventurers! As winter fades away and the flowers begin to bloom, spring in Texas is the perfect time for families to venture out and explore. As a mom on a mission to ensure maximum fun during our travels, here’s my round-up of the coolest spring nature destinations in the Lone Star State.

Santa Ana National Refuge

Lush trails, chasing after colorful birds, and crossing a tree bridge for the ultimate bird’s eye view awaits you at the Santa Ana National Refuge ! It’s like stepping into a real-life nature documentary, and trust me, your little adventurers will be buzzing with excitement.

• Admission: Daily passes are $5 per vehicle and yearly passes are $10 per vehicle. The first Sunday of every month is FREE!

Llano River State Park

Who’s up for a splash-tastic adventure? Head on over to the Llano River , where the water’s cool and the vibes are even cooler! Head to the visitor center and pick your kids up a FREE junior ranger explorer pack, packed with goodies to conquer the great outdoors. From floating down the river to casting a line for the catch of the day, there’s no shortage of fun to be had.

Rockport Beach

Rockport Beach is your ticket to sun-soaked bliss and sandy shenanigans. Managed by Blue Wave Beaches, this slice of paradise boasts squeaky-clean sands and low tide waters for every swimmer to enjoy.

• Distance from Houston: 3 hours
• Admission: $10 daily or $40 annual vehicle parking fee.

Comal River

Grab your tubes , slap on some sunscreen, and prepare for a tubing adventure like no other. With gentle currents and heart-pounding tube chutes, it’s the perfect blend of chill vibes and adrenaline rushes. The Comal River is known for its shorter float and calmer waters making it perfect for families.

• Admission: Expect to spend $15-22 per person, including shuttle, tube rental, and parking fees.

Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center

Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center is a haven of adventure and tranquility.
