2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

golf scotland european tour

The 2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the 48-event docket that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.

The most significant changes to the schedule are related to the strategic alliance between DP World Tour and the European Tour that was announced in November 2021, changing the name of the tour and raising the minimum value of purses to $2 million.

European Tour co-sanctioned, purse-boosted events

The two tours are co-sanctioning three events on their schedules, including the European Tour's Scottish Open, which has a new sponsor in Genesis, as well the Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship on the DP World Tour (European Tour). The fields in all three events will feature a split of player availability between DP World Tour (European Tour) and European Tour pros, including spots for 50 European Tour players in the Barbasol and Barracuda Championships, which will be played opposite the Scottish Open and Irish Open.

The Genesis Scottish Open will remain part of the European Tour's Rolex Series. The Irish Open, which will not be co-sanctioned in 2022, will have a purse boosted by the DP World Tour (European Tour) to $6 million -- nearly double the amount offered this year.

There are a variety of new events on the schedule this year, including the Ras al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, the Pecanwood Classic and Steyn City Championship in South Africa, the Soudal Open in Belgium, two new events in Asia (including one in Japan) and the return of the Cyprus Open.

World Golf Championships halved

Since 2009, there have been four World Golf Championships events on the schedule. However, there are just two on the 2022 schedule: the WGC-HSBC Champions in China from Oct. 28-31 and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas from March 23-27.

With the Memphis-based event becoming a playoff event, the other change is the WGC-Mexico Championship dropping out of the series. A Mexico Championship is listed on the schedule as a full-field event.

British Open 2023: It's time for the PGA Tour to host a month-long European swing

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/EuroTourneys.jpg

For all the discussion of where golf’s going and who’s behind the wheel, there’s no question the DP World Tour’s been relegated to the backseat. The circuit’s fate was a bargaining chip in professional golf's schism; Saudi Arabia viewed it as an avenue into the sport’s ecosystem, the PGA Tour deemed its European counterpart as a means to keep an emerging threat at bay. The DP World Tour product itself, however, was an afterthought, and actions (and inactions) by both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf manifested the long-held fears of the Old World cognoscenti: The league had become a second-class citizen.

So as the professional game transitions into an era of detente , it’s time to make good on the once-promised strategic alliance between the Euro and American entities in an effort that will support the former and strengthen the latter. It’s time for the PGA Tour to sanction a monthlong European swing.

There’s no need to squint to see how this could come to fruition, for the framework is already in place on the front end. Historically the Irish Open and Scottish Open have preceded the Open Championship, although this year the Irish will be played in the fall. In our proposal the Irish would return to its historical date before the Scottish, which is in its second year as a co-sanctioned event by the PGA and DP World Tour. When played at the proper venues the Irish and Scottish serve as a two-week Open Championship primer to both players and fans. “Proper” is the operative word, however, and a word that does not always apply to either tournament.

Issues with sponsorship, fields, the DP World Tour schedule, infrastructure and attendance have kept the Irish and Scottish Opens from consistently visiting the best links courses each country has to offer, instead defaulting to hosts that are seeking exposure or relevance. It’s not that courses like Galgorm Castle, Mount Juliet, Loch Lomond, Gleneagles and the K Club are bad; conversely, in lands in which golfers routinely make pilgrimages to these places are far from holy sites. Many of the above courses are also of the parkland variety, a miss considering what is indigenous to this region—and what makes Scotland and Ireland so venerated—is links golf. In an exceedingly paint-by-numbers game, links golf requests (maybe the best phrase is “requires”) a player to draw outside the lines. Precision and power take a backseat to vision, artistry and feel. Links golf asks innumerable questions of a player’s talent, mind and heart, which is why it is often considered the ultimate test in the sport. Parkland golf, even when it’s good, is never that.

1428300191

Similar sentiments apply to the Renaissance Club. It’s a fine setup and has been an adequate host to the Scottish for the last five years. It’s also new, opening in 2008. Compare that with some of its neighbors, which have been around for 200 years and are dripping in history. The Renaissance is a man-made marvel, whereas most Scottish links were erected by the meeting of land and sky and sea and sculpted by the hands of time. That the Renaissance is one of the more expensive tee times in Scotland, a country where golf is affordable and a game of the common man, goes against the very spirit of the national championship.

In short, where the Irish and Scottish have been played—and how they’ve been played—well, it’s sort of like visiting Rome and grabbing lunch at Panda Express.

It’s not that those who run the Scottish and Irish Opens are ambivalent to their plights. There are constraints, prerequisites and realities that come with hosting a modern professional tournament. An urban center has to be in the vicinity to lodge visitors and facilitate travel; both Scotland and Ireland boast few metropolitan areas. The course itself needs to be able to challenge the world’s best players, and the host club’s physical footprint must provide for tens of thousands of guests, stands, concessions and corporate tents. Most Scottish and Irish links tend to be smaller in scale and their coastal topography, while scenic, is not always conducive to accommodating crowds. The links are also shorter in length, problematic in a professional game that continues to be dominated by distance.

Above all else, there is the necessity of monetary backing. It’s no secret that the European Tour has been in dire financial straits for some time, a predicament only worsened by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s how the Dubai-based DP World company was able to purchase naming rights for the European Tour Group in 2021, and why the Euro Tour listened to overtures from Premier Golf League and Saudi investors before the PGA Tour offered support. The struggles extend to tournament purses, forcing most of Europe’s top talent to migrate to the United States to compete for bigger paydays. As a corollary sponsors are less likely to subsidize a tournament that lacks marquee attractions. It’s a vicious self-fulfilling cycle and one of the many reasons why PGA Tour officials dubbed the European Tour Group as “an underinvested and borderline distressed asset,” according to PGA Tour documents that were accidentally made public earlier this month.

That’s why the PGA Tour’s involvement in a potential European swing is so crucial. With the tour sanctioning the Scottish Open the event’s strength-of-field average doubled, most notably with more front-line firepower in 14 of the world’s top 15 players teeing it up. The tour’s collaboration brought in Genesis as a sponsor, and Genesis increased the purse 28.5 percent over the previous year and a whopping 177 percent since 2016. A similar knighting of the Irish Open—which had a $6 million purse last year, lower than every PGA Tour full-field event—could produce dividends in the same ballpark, especially since the Irish has historically labored with tournament sponsorship. With the PGA Tour serving as a benefactor in both players and dollars, the Irish can return to its normal spot on the schedule (it was moved to the fall in hopes of garnering a better field) and be freed from resorts like the K Club and Mount Juliet to explore more suitable playing venues. Lahinch, Ballyliffin and Portmarnock are past Irish Open hosts that fans would like to see back in the rotation, as is Royal County Down—arguably the best links in the world that has hosted four Irish Opens.

Regarding the Scottish, the tournament should be more ambitious now that it has the tour’s patronage. This is not to say every potential fantasy could come true; Royal Dornoch, consistently ranked as the best links in Scotland, is too remote to host an event, as is Machrihanish. And charming spots like Nairn, Crail and Elie likely won’t be formidable enough against 150-something professionals. However, the tour’s backing should remove some barriers. DP World Tour officials had originally scouted Cruden Bay as a potential Scottish host, although ultimately tournament officials wanted a site closer to Edinburgh. Yet Cruden Bay is just 30 minutes from Aberdeen, a town that is equipped to handle the trappings of a tour event, and Cruden Bay itself is a quirky masterpiece that the world deserves to see. Many pros visit North Berwick’s West Links during Scottish Open week on their own accord, and though the links may be somewhat on the easier side for the world’s best it’s so full of character and romanticism that fans won’t worry about the low scores. Gullane has been a past Scottish Open favorite and certainly has the property to host again, and there’s the case that the PGA Tour should shoot their shot and attempt to get the Old Course into the mix.

However, our ambitions aren’t just on the Open Championship lead-up. The PGA Tour should also take advantage of the backend of the Open, adding a fourth tournament to its European swing. Ideally this fourth would rotate between London, Paris, Madrid and Berlin, and the focus isn’t so much potential courses as it is the markets they are in. Similar to how the National Football League, National Basketball Association and now Major League Baseball are tapping into these regions by bringing regular-season contests to Europe, the PGA Tour should look to do the same. Perhaps it’s no surprise that LIV Golf’s best-attended events in its two-year run have been on the international front, showcasing there is a global thirst to see golfers that mostly play in the United States.

As for what’s in it for the PGA Tour, the uncomfortable truth is its schedule between the U.S. Open and FedEx Cup doesn’t resonate with most fans. There are no showstoppers in the mix and the fields are routinely weak. By bringing the Irish Open and a moving European tour stop into the mix it can buttress its own product without damaging what already exists. (Note: The John Deere Classic had just one player in the world’s top 25 in its field last week; the 2022 3M Open, which was held after the Open Championship, had the second-worst strength of field average on tour and is expected to have a similar number this year.) There’s also the belief the tour has an obligation to the DP World Tour. It’s no secret that European players and officials are wondering what exactly the DP World Tour is receiving from the PGA Tour in the strategic alliance, especially now that the PGA Tour is taking a Saudi offer that the PGA Tour convinced the DP World Tour not to take. Bringing two more European events into the PGA Tour mix won’t totally assuage hurt and bruised egos, but it’s a start.

It’s worth noting one of the reasons LIV Golf and rogue leagues were fun thought exercises is because the professional game had fallen into stasis. It’s improved since the schism began, but golf’s schedule is still not living up to what it could be. A step in that direction is seeing the DP World Tour is not a bargaining chip but an asset, and a PGA Tour-infused European swing will goes ways in showing there’s nothing second-class about it.

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson , is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.

Hidden Gems of Scotland

Visit Scotland

When you travel to Scotland for golf there’s a long list of courses that most would say you must visit. The thing about these courses is that everyone has visited them. Sometimes you want to go off the beaten path and create a more unique golf trip.

Below we list the courses that might surprise you, the ones you’re not really certain of on the first tee but delighted you played them by the eighteenth. Let’s take a look at some of these hidden gems and expand your horizons for your next Scotland golf trip .

Aberdeenshire

Describing a European Tour venue as a hidden gem may seem like a bit of a stretch, but Murcar Links is a wildly underrated golf course. Just ten minutes from Aberdeen and sitting right on the North Sea Coast, Murcar is a proper links experience that will simply delight you.

There is something about those special links fairways that look like someone has scrunched the land up in their hand. The very subtle and very real undulations in the fairway compel you to get creative. The course was designed by Archie Simpson then improved by James Braid to create eighteen unique and challenging holes.

The course is incredibly challenging, the tight fairways can seem far tighter when the North Sea wind blows. Murcar proves that a course can be short yet still test you fully. Plenty of irons from the tee and patient golf will help you navigate this classic links track.

Murcar Links

Speaking of unique holes, there are few more dramatic courses in Scotland than Stonehaven Golf Club. This is a course that seems to fall into the North Sea. Stonehaven GC still has a bunker that was created by a bomb dropped from a German aircraft, aptly named Hitler’s Bunker.

This course is quirky, oozes character and just makes you happy. It was also the work of Archie Simpson and James Braid among others. You can see this course from the train on the way to Aberdeen and it just begs you to play it as you pass.

For a fantastic inland experience Newmachar has two tremendous courses. Both designed by Dave Thomas, the Hawkshill Course is the more famous of the two but don’t overlook the Swailend Course. It demands patient tactical golf thanks to the tricky green complexes, but it’s in sumptuous condition and is a brilliant round for all golfers.

Newmacher Golf Club

Dumfries & Galloway

From the North-East to the South-West, one of the most incredible courses in Scotland that you may not have heard of is Southerness . This is the most southerly golf course in Scotland and it is by far the best in the Dumfries and Galloway area. The holes around the turn that run along the shore are just utterly incredible. If you play here you will never forget your round, it is incredibly special.

Looking out onto the Solway Firth with views of the local lighthouse and rolling hills on the other side of the course, it is very pretty. The course itself has a ruggedness about it which juxtaposes perfectly with the stunning vistas that surround the course.

Southerness Golf Club

Portpatrick Dunskey is a fun track, with the views on this course making it a wonderful golfing experience. With cliffs coming into view and Ireland making up part of the vistas, this is a course that you will talk about for a long time after you’ve played it. It almost looks like a course that would appear on a computer game, it is that visually stimulating.

The Scottish Borders

There are few courses that typify the Borders more than Eyemouth: it is literally five miles from England! The 6th hole is one of the best par threes you will ever play. It is a hit and hope of properly rugged coastline, as dramatic as golf gets.

Another highlight is a hole called “The Hawkness Monster” which is the longest hole in Scotland at 656 yards from the back tee. This is a hole you definitely don’t want to play into the wind. It is quirks like these that make this course so much fun and will keep you coming back for more.

From rugged coastal clifftop to lush inland golf, Peebles represents a more refined form of the great game. This course sits in the Tweed Valley and offers sumptuous views which perfectly match the silky smooth greens.

Peebles Golf Club

There is a simplicity about this course, it is a course that appeals thanks to the superb condition it is presented in rather than the routing of the holes per se. Like many Harry Colt designs , the course demands well-placed tee shots and accuracy throughout your round. Rolling hills and great golf awaits you at Peebles.

Carnoustie is one of the most famous courses in the world, rightly so, but many overlook the great Burnside course that sits beside the Championship. The Burnside is not a long course but it is tricky and will certainly challenge your tee shot placement. It is a course that demands strong second shots and patience.

Carnoustie is a unique links experience thanks to the many large trees that decorate the course, the Burnside has these. Starting and ending with gentle par fours, two of the few holes you can see lull you into a false sense of security. This course is fantastic in its own right and it is sad that it is overshadowed by its famous Championship big brother.

This is an area that is jam-packed with great courses, Panmure is a dream but hardly a hidden gem. Next door to that though you will find Monifieth Medal. This is as a fine a links as you will find and is unbeatable value. The course rolls through great links land and even has a little parkland-esque portion.

Panmure Golf Club

The greens at Monifieth are one of the stand-out features, they roll perfectly and test your approach shots like the best links courses in the world. It also benefits from a similar terrain to Carnoustie with the high trees adorning the links. If you have ever played Carnoustie or Panmure , Monifieth will feel familiar for sure.

As you drive out of Edinburgh toward Musselburgh and beyond, you pass some of the best golf courses in Scotland. Here there are a couple of hidden gems for you to enjoy too. The furthest down this coast and one of the best links courses around is Dunbar .

Dunbar Golf Club

A classic nine-out and nine-back set-up, this course starts with two par fives that gently break you into your round. As you walk through the wall at the fourth you are suddenly on the shoreline and the course just delights you from then on. This is a phenomenal golf course with a great heritage that has really stood the test of time.

On the other side of the spectrum you have Craigielaw . It looks and feels like a classic Lothian links yet is a new addition to the scene. Having opened in 2001, there are only a few holes that make you think that this is a new course. It is a superb modern links that is clearly firmly rooted in the classic links of the region.

Craigielaw Golf Club

If your course is going to be a success in this part of the world then it has to be great. Craigielaw may be a new kid on the block but it definitely deserves its place on this coast, overlook it at your loss. This course also sits right beside one of the most incredible hidden gems of them all, Kilspindie . Known for its short yardage, to worry about that is to completely miss the point.

This is links golf as it should be, old-fashioned and a little quirky. Willie Park Jr and Ben Sayers put this masterpiece together and it has barely changed. This is a walk back through the history of golf and you can even hire hickory clubs for the full experience. Kilspindie is the ultimate hidden gem with beautiful holes, views and the warmest of welcomes.

The Hidden Gem Experience

There is something really special about finding a hidden gem. Usually you come across them thanks to word of mouth or a lucky find on the internet. There is always that uncertainty as you arrive at the course that the experience will not live up to your hopes.

Hidden gems have extra-charm because you grow to love them a little more, you feel that they deserve more recognition but at the same time you don’t want them getting too famous and too busy as you will definitely want to return. You fall for them more than the famous courses, it’s probably that underdog thing, everyone loves an underdog.

When you find a true hidden gem you also get the pleasure of telling your friends about it. You get to share that experience with your golfing friends and tell them all about this incredible course that they may never have heard of. You should always add one wildcard to your golfing trips to find these gems.

If you include the Lothians region listed on the Scottish Golf Course website, you end up with about 67 golf courses. Some options may have multiple layouts or course names; the number may be lower, but you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Her Eras tour starts back up this May in Europe, then moves to the United States in October and finishes in Canada this November. Swift’s 15th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , drops April 19 (but you can pre-order it now ). That means it’s likely she’ll include songs from that record on her tour as well as hits from 2022’s Midnights .

Taylor Swift returns to the stage on her "Eras" tour from May through the end of the year. Here's ... [+] how to get Taylor Swift tickets now.

Quartet share lead in Abu Dhabi on low scoring day

Bradley Bawden, John Parry, Nicolai Kristensen and Sebastian Friedrichsen all posted seven under par rounds of 63 to share a one-shot lead heading into day two of the Abu Dhabi Challenge at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club.

GettyImages-2147896554

Englishman Bawden carded four consecutive birdies in his opening five holes, before adding two more gains at the par four 16th and par five 18th to make the turn at six under par. Two birdies and a bogey on the back nine saw him finish the day in a tie for the lead.

The 27-year-old was pleased with how he dealt with the more difficult afternoon conditions and is focused on building on his strong start in Abu Dhabi.

“ I’m very happy with my round today ,” he said . “I played particularly well this afternoon as the wind picked up and the greens were firm. It became trickier throughout the day but I was able to put the ball in the right spots and hole a few putts which was pleasing.”

“ I need to keep doing what I’m doing and following the same process. I’ve been working hard on trying to be consistent throughout tournaments and hopefully I can convert my good start and be successful this week. ”

Co-leader Kristensen made the most of calm morning conditions to climb to the top of the leaderboard and he was especially pleased with his efforts after adverse weather conditions affected his pre-event practice.

“ My scoring was really good today,” he said. “I’ve been working quite hard back home and I’m starting to see some results. The progression is there.”

“ With the rainfall earlier this week I wasn’t able to get any practice in until yesterday, when the course was a lot more windy, so I felt like today I played the course for the first time”.

The leading quartet are one shot clear of eight players at six under par, including Emirati Joshua Grenville-Wood, Danes Jonathan Gøth-Rasmussen and Hamish Brown, Englishmen Sam Hutsby and David Horsey, German Nicolai Von Dellingshausen, South African Justin Walters, and Switzerland’s Jeremy Freiburghaus.

Round two will get under way at 6:30am local time tomorrow, with Bawden set to tee it up at 8:20am alongside Norwegian Andreas Halvorsen and Irishman Ronan Mullarney, while Kristensen heads out at 1:10pm alongside Scotland’s Euan Walker and the Ireland’s Gary Hurley.
