The Grand Tour

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed why it’s the end of the road for The Grand Tour . Clarkson said he and co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond, decided to quit the Amazon Prime Video show after running out of steam.

In an interview with The Times of London , Clarkson said it was becoming increasingly difficult to conjure up outlandish adventures for the show and that the presenters were all showing their age.

He added that The Grand Tour missions are “immensely physical” and had become increasingly difficult when “you’re unfit and fat and old.” “If you’re Bear Grylls you go to a hotel — there aren’t any hotels in the Sahara desert,” Clarkson said.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May confirmed last November that they had filmed their final installments of The Grand Tour . Two final episodes of the motoring series were recorded in Mauritania and Zimbabwe and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

Fozia Khan, Amazon Studios’ head of unscripted in the UK, said the brand could survive with another set of presenters. “It’s come to its natural end,” she said, adding that her team was “thinking about” how the show can live on.

Clarkson will continue to host Clarkson’s Farm for Amazon after the series has become the streamer’s highest-rated UK original. Filming on Season 4 is set to begin this year. Clarkson is also hosting more Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for ITV.

The Times interviewer Ed Potton wrote that he was told not to ask Clarkson about his reviled The Sun newspaper column about Meghan Markle. Clarkson wrote that he imagines the day Markle is paraded “naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.” The piece was retracted and Amazon made clear its fury at the article.

Asked if he feels under pressure to be controversial, Clarkson said: “No! I like being controversial. Some people who see a still pond find that peaceful, but I cannot resist throwing a stone in it.”

Clarkson, Hammond, and May’s Grand Tour Tenure Is Coming to an End

The Grand Tour’s end comes just weeks after the BBC indefinitely shut down Top Gear.

NicoDeMattia

The old Top Gear trio of Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May will be hitting your screen as the hosts of The Grand Tour for the final time in 2024. The two final episodes have now been filmed, taking place in Mauritania and Zimbabwe, where the trio we've grown to love will close a chapter that's been three decades in the making.

“We’re done. I have reviewed cars on TV since 1989. That’s 34 years. And after next year, I won’t be doing that any more," Clarkson told The Times .

Since The Grand Tour launched in 2016, after Clarkson was fired from Top Gear for punching a producer, it's gone through several changes. First, it was essentially a Top Gear recreation, with celebrity interviews and an in-studio live show. Then they tightened it up by ditching the celebrity stuff. Eventually, they ditched the live show altogether and just made feature-length specials. And while none of The Grand Tour's iterations managed to capture the magic of Top Gear at its best , it was still one of the most watched shows on Amazon Prime . Millions of people tuned in to watch the automotive equivalent of the Three Stooges (and I mean that as a grand compliment).

Getty

All three hosts have their own projects to pursue outside of The Grand Tour anyway. Clarkson has his farm show and May has a travel show, both of which are also on Amazon Prime , while Hammond still does a lot of work for DriveTribe , while also presenting other TV programs. So they'll still be around, even though The Grand Tour won't be.

This news also comes just a couple of weeks after the BBC decided to indefinitely shut down Top Gear . After host Freddie Flintoff's accident during filming and the subsequent settlement, the BBC decided against renewing the show. Clarkson doesn't blame the most recent trio of Top Gear hosts for not wanting to return, either, specifically Flintoff.

"Richard Hammond was always keen to get back to work [following a crash], whereas Freddie isn’t," Clarkson told The Sun . "I don’t blame him. I know what happened on that awful day and it was horrific."

Getty

Clarkson even said that anyone who wants to take over in Flintoff's spot would come across as "heartless."

In a matter of weeks, the world learned that the two most entertaining car shows on TV are shutting down. We all knew this day was coming soon, as the original Top Gear gang are all either in their sixties or getting quite close, but it's still a little sad to see them go. Sure, their most recent work pales in comparison to the shows from their prime but, like most millennial car nerds, Clarkson, Hammond, and May made an indelible impression on me and the way I look at cars, and I'm sure I'm not alone on that one. Thanks for the memories, chaps.

"The Grand Tour" to return for farewell episode in 2024

C larkson, Hammond, and May are set to officially bid farewell to their program, "The Grand Tour," broadcast on Amazon, as reported by the BBC.

There's good news and bad news for fans. Good news: "The Grand Tour" will return in 2024. Bad news: this will be its final episode. The trio, who rose to fame through the BBC's "Top Gear," have continued their antics on "The Grand Tour," which has been available on Amazon since 2016.

While the initial seasons of "The Grand Tour" boasted a similar number of episodes to its predecessor “Top Gear," the series has recently been limited to sporadically published special productions. It appears that this was the beginning of the end for "The Grand Tour".

According to the BBC, which cited internal sources, a special episode documenting a trip to Zimbabwe will be released in 2024 , marking the official end of "The Grand Tour".

Despite saying goodbye to "The Grand Tour," it doesn't mean that this popular trio will completely vanish from our screen. Each presenter has their own shows on Amazon's platform. As of now, these productions are set to continue.

It's worth noting that "Top Gear," the precursor to "The Grand Tour," is also seeing its end. Following Clarkson, May, and Hammond's departure, the BBC carried on with the series, introducing new presenters. However, this came to a halt in 2022, when one presenter, Freddie Flintoff, sustained serious injuries in an on-set incident. Nearly a year following the accident, the broadcaster announced its decision to discontinue the program.

How Close Is The Grand Tour To Toeing The Legal Line Set By The BBC?

Last summer, The Grand Tour producer Andy Wilman revealed a set of limitations put into place by Amazon’s lawyers in order to avoid getting sued by the BBC. That meant we wouldn’t see things such as The Stig or the famous Top Gear test track.

Some of the rules made sense and some were simply absurd. However, two episodes into the second season and The Grand Tour is starting to feel very “familiar.” In fact, take away the intro sequence and you might be forgiven for thinking it was simply an episode of…that other show.

The boys and Wilman seem to be testing their limits with what they are allowed to do. But just how far are they willing to go? Let’s take a look at the “rules” from a piece we did over the summer:

Table of Contents

Nothing is Beautiful

It might be a little too early to tell with this one. Evidently, The Grand Tour is not allowed to feature scenery that’s “too beautiful,” which is absurd because beauty is subjective. Did I find the concrete canyons of Manhattan beautiful? I sure did. Does that mean there’s a lawsuit incoming? I’d be shocked if there was.

The Stig is Left Behind

The Grand Tour obviously could not use a faceless, nameless driver for their show, so for the first season, they went in the completely opposite direction: The American. The American was loud, brash, and was completely exposed.

As we know, The American wasn’t received too well, so this season, we have a new driver, Abbie Eaton. Abbie’s face is completely covered except for her eyes, and other than one line prior to setting off, she was completely silent her whole lap. As a matter of fact, Jeremy never even mentioned her name.

In essence, we now have a “nameless,” near silent driver.

No More Racetrack – No More Chicago, Hammerhead, or Gambon, and No More Reasonably Priced Car Challenges

grand tour bbc

I think the boys are safe with this one. Not only do they have the Eboladrome with clever section names, but they also have a second circuit devoted entirely to the Celebrity Face Off segment.

As far as a reasonably priced car goes, the celebrities drive around in a Jaguar F-Type…not a reasonably priced car by any means.

No More Handwritten Times for the Leaderboard

grand tour bbc

I suppose the boys had to enter the digital age at some point in their car program careers, right? No handwritten leaderboard? Not a problem; they boys simply went with a digital leaderboard instead. Moving along…

The Use of C*ck by James May

I wonder how difficult it is for James to not utter that word while filming The Grand Tour. So far he’s doing a bang-up job!

No Cheap Car Challenges

grand tour bbc

This one hurts the most, as cheap car challenges were easily the highlight of Top Gear for most viewers. I’m not sure what defines “cheap,” but I’m sure there’s a dollar amount in the legal papers somewhere. As it stands, The Grand Tour episode “Enviro-mental” probably came the closest to what could be considered a cheap car challenge. I suppose time will tell if the boys will test this rule any further.

The Grand Tour shake up as Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May film 'final special'

The fan-favourite trio launched The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime back in 2016 following their departure from the BBC's Top Gear

Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May have reportedly filmed their final The Grand Tour.

The fan-favourite trio launched the show on Amazon Prime Video back in 2016 following their departure from BBC's Top Gear . The news comes just days after bosses announced Top Gear was also being 'parked' for the foreseeable future.

It's thought the streaming site will 'bring in new hosts' to take over from Clarkson, Hammond and May if the show is brought back in the future, something the presenters are reportedly 'happy with'. An insider explained: "It's a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters."

"The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following. But the guys have made no bones about the fact they're all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue," the source told The Sun. "They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular."

Jeremy is still working with Amazon as his third season of Clarkson's Farm is nearing broadcast on the streamer, with a fourth expected. James has another one of his Our Man In... travelogues coming soon after its launch in 2020.

There's still two more instalments of The Grand Tour to come before the trio's reported departure with two specials seeing them travel to Mauritania and Zimbabwe. They presented Top Gear together until 2015 after a disagreement with producers.

Earlier this month it was announced that the BBC will rest Top Gear for the foreseeable future, following a crash that left host Andrew Freddie Flintoff . Production had been halted since former England cricket captain Flintoff, 45, was taken to hospital in December 2022 after he was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.

Following the horror crash, the BBC announced that it would pause production on the show, co-presented by Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness and automotive journalist Chris Harris, as it was felt it would be 'inappropriate'. At the time, they added that there would be a health and safety review.

In a statement given to the PA news agency, the BBC said: "Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the UK show for the foreseeable future. The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them. We will have more to say in the near future on this. We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do. All other Top Gear activity remains unaffected by this hiatus including international formats, digital, magazines and licensing."

BBC Studios also said a health and safety production review of Top Gear, which did not cover the accident but instead looked at previous seasons, found that "while BBC Studios had complied with the required BBC policies and industry best practice in making the show, there were important learnings which would need to be rigorously applied to future Top Gear UK productions".

A statement added: "The report includes a number of recommendations to improve approaches to safety as Top Gear is a complex programme-making environment routinely navigating tight filming schedules and ambitious editorial expectations – challenges often experienced by long-running shows with an established on and off screen team. Learnings included a detailed action plan involving changes in the ways of working, such as increased clarity on roles and responsibilities and better communication between teams for any future Top Gear production."

‘The Grand Tour’ vs. ‘Top Gear’: the BBC forgot what made ‘Top Gear’

W ith Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May having recently returned in The Grand Tour special, A Massive Hunt, gracing our screens with some fun, joyous entertainment (though perhaps not for May), we are reminded that this is now technically the fourth series of their Amazon adventure.

Their BBC replacements did not get off to a rocket start, rather it was a travesty on arrival. In most people’s living memory, Clarkson was the focal point of Top Gear, the original 1977 to 2001 series even had Clarkson as a presenter from 1988 to 1999. As he left, the show began a death spiral until cancellation in 2001, and his second departure did much the same as he took his fanbase with him. Clarkson and Andy Wilman relaunched Top Gear with Hammond in 2002 with May joining in 2003. For thirteen years they became the Top Gear trio, they and Wilman became Top Gear , turning a car magazine show into mass entertainment. This is why new Top Gear has flopped so badly: it was never about the concept, it was about the presenters.

As Clarkson departed a second time, along with Hammond and May, the BBC were clueless about how to fill the lucrative void as they didn’t understand the programme – they just cared about the money it made

As Clarkson departed a second time, along with Hammond and May, the BBC were clueless about how to fill the lucrative void as they didn’t understand the programme – they just cared about the money it made. They showed this when Chris Evans was brought in and made the show unbearable to watch, and they filled the trio’s void with six presenters. Matt LeBlanc tried his best as sidekick and became a partial saving grace when Evans realised his unpopularity – a face and voice for radio perhaps best describes his tenure. I barely remember Rory Reid, the other of the second trio with LeBlanc and Chris Harris. The interest was gone. Honestly it went with Clarkson, and series 23 to 26 have been memory holed. Whilst many don’t realise how scripted Top Gear was, the original trio drove the series so well that you didn’t notice or care, they became the show unlike their replacements.

Series 23 to 26 almost killed the brand. Series 22 was the last of the original trio averaging 6.49 million viewers , meanwhile the first series of the post-Clarkson era series 23 managed 3.89 which declined to 2.35 by series 26 . With series 27 and 28 managing 4.46 and 4.76 respectively, so began the slow revival. With the help of being moved from BBC 2 to BBC 1, series 29 managed 5.68. It’s telling, however, that the original trio could pull in millions more than this whilst on BBC 2, and the show had to be moved in a last-ditch attempt at rebuilding the brand. The show has found its feet once more with the trio of Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Andrew Flintoff, the latter being the magic ingredient, as they have managed to bring back the spirit and energy to the programme which was lost post-Clarkson.

Though the Grand Tour is not perfect and the first series faltered as its scriptedness was palpable, the chemistry between Clarkson, Hammond, and May still makes it enjoyable; it comes into its own from series two onwards

Though the Grand Tour is not perfect and the first series faltered as its scriptedness was palpable, the chemistry between Clarkson, Hammond, and May still makes it enjoyable; it comes into its own from series two onwards. The dynamic was back, exemplified in series 3’s Columbia two-part special. I love that they also branched out into other realms with their DriveTribe work, bringing the charm and behind-the-scenes shenanigans and commentary that made the bonus bits of Top Gear so entertaining. It allows us to see more of Andy Wilman too, who used to make small appearances with Clarkson for bonus commentary on episodes. On DriveTribe we also got to see that he pilfered Top Gear ’s silverware in the hasty exit from the BBC.

All three have bloomed with their freedom; a notable side-project is May’s FoodTribe, and his rather satirical take on cookery shows James May: Oh Cook and his Our Man in Japan series. The main show’s pivot to focussing on specials highlights what made their Top Gear tenure so special, the entertainment the trio’s interactions brought, with the specials ranging from the Polar and Africa ones to the infamous Patagonia special. The specials ended up making the show for those who weren’t car enthusiasts. With the Grand Tour specials, Seamen was a joy to watch and whilst A Massive Hunt was not as good it was still great entertainment.

Top Gear though is beginning to find its way again, settling down after the disastrous years from 2015-2019. Clarkson’s Top Gear essentially became the trio and Wilman’s child, and so it’s easy to jump to the Grand Tour to follow our favourite three motor loving, goofy middle-aged men. Their spin-off projects only add to the enjoyment. It’s also good news that the new Top Gear helmed by Flintoff, Harris, and McGuinness shows some hope of its own, now that the loudmouth and all-round failure that was Chris Evans has become a long distant nightmare.

Comments (1)

Its pretty dumb to overdue humans of the show. It was allways the humans, not the stupid machines, wich were great.

The Grand Tour’s fate ‘revealed’ after Jeremy Clarkson’s exit in final episode

Jeremy Clarkson

The Grand Tour has reportedly been given a huge lifeline, with plans to develop a fresh version without Jeremy Clarkson .

The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host, 63, and his co-stars Richard Hammond and James May have filmed their final special of the Amazon Prime series, after it was revealed in November that it was coming to an end.

The trio, who first hit our screens together in 2003 on Top Gear , announced their exit from the series in November last year, however, it could be coming back with a fresh presenting team.

According to reports, Studio Lambert – the production company who brought us The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge – has landed the contract to develop a fresh version of the motoring show.

An ‘update to the format’ is being prepped with new presenting talent, although has not been formally greenlit, Broadcast claims.

Clarkson, Hammond and May first launched the series in 2016, with their penultimate episode The Sand Job having aired earlier this year following a trip to Mauritania, and a final in Zimbabwe yet to reach our screens.

As the news of The Grand Tour coming to a grinding halt was announced in November, it was said to be ‘the end of an era’.

A source revealed at the time: ‘It’s a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters.

‘The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following.’

The insider continued to The Sun : ‘But the guys have made no bones about the fact they’re all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue.

‘They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular.’

But, it may not be the end of Clarkson, Hammond, 54, and May, 61, on our screens together.

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

When asked if they’d reunite on another project, May said: ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.

‘We’ve got two (episodes) in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see.’

Clarkson also spoke about The Grand Tour ending and branded himself ‘unfit, fat and old’ when speaking about why he was done with the ‘immensely physical’ show.

‘I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else,’ he told The Times.

‘We’ve done everything you can do with a car.

‘When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air.’

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

The future of The Grand Tour was thrown into doubt following Clarkson’s vile comments in a newspaper column about Meghan Markle in January 2023, in which the broadcaster said he dreamed of the Duchess being paraded through the streets and publicly shamed.

It became Ipso’s most complained-about article after its publication, receiving more than 25,100 complaints, with Clarkson later issuing a lengthy apology to the Suits actress and her husband Prince Harry, and claims emerged that Amazon reportedly ‘parted ways’ with him .

Meanwhile, Clarkson’s adventures at his Diddly Squat farm will continue to air on Amazon Prime for season four, while the third instalment of Clarkson’s Farm premieres next month.

Metro.co.uk has approached Studio Lambert for comment.

The Grand Tour is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

When are the finals.

The singles final will take place at 1:00pm local time on Sunday, April 21st. The doubles final will follow the singles final on Sunday.

Who are the defending champions?

Iga Swiatek won her second straight Porsche Tennis Grand Prix singles title last year, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-4 in a rematch of the 2022 final. Sabalenka has reached the last three Stuttgart finals, finishing runner-up to the World No.1 on each occasion (Ashleigh Barty defeated Sabalenka in the 2021 final).

In last year's doubles draw, Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs also went back-to-back. They defeated Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Giuliana Olmos 6-4, 6-1 to win their second straight Porsche Tennis Grand Prix doubles title.

Who is playing?

The cut-off for singles direct entry was based on the Hologic WTA Tour rankings of March 18th. No.31 Linda Noskova was the last direct entry at that time.

Wild cards have been awarded to two-time Stuttgart champion Angelique Kerber, her fellow Germans Laura Siegemund and Tatjana Maria, and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu.

On Friday, Americans Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro withdrew from the main-draw entry list due to change of schedule. Those withdrawals have moved World No.34 Donna Vekic and Paula Badosa (special ranking of No.34) into the main draw.
