Athens Transport Tickets and Cards

Athens Transport in English | How to get to the airport and the port of Athens  | 20 places to visit in Athens and how to get there  |

Starting in 2017, a new electronic ticketing system was introduced in the Athens public transport network, replacing the older paper tickets and cards.

Fare prices remained the same, but the way you pay and use the tickets changed.

Last updated: May 10th, 2021

This guide on using Athens transport tickets and cards is divided into 4 sections:

A. Types of tickets and cards B. Athens Transport Fares C. Charging and recharging tickets and card D. Using tickets and cards

A. Types of tickets and cards

1. what are the different types of tickets and cards for athens public transport.

There are 3 new types of Athens Transport tickets:

  • The Ath.ena Ticket
  • The personalized Ath.ena Card
  • The anonymous Ath.ena Card

greece train travel pass

The Ath.ena Ticket at a glance:

  • What is it? Paper rechargeable ticket that can be charged with fares from simple 90-minute tickets up to 5-day tickets. Tickets for trips to/from the airport exist as well.
  • Who is it for? People who don’t use the transport regularly and just want a ticket to get to their destination.
  • The good: You don’t need to show a document or wait in line to get one. You can just go to a ticket machine.
  • The bad: It can’t be recharged while there’s already a ticket inside so you might end up needing more than one. Also, you can’t get half-priced tickets with it.

The anonymous Ath.ena Card at a glance:

  • What is it? Plastic rechargeable card that can be charged with any fare, up to 5-day tickets.
  • Who is it for? People who don’t use the transport regularly but would rather use a plastic card than a paper ticket.
  • The good: You don’t need to show a document to get one.
  • The bad: You can only issue it at ticket offices, you can’t get half priced tickets and it has very few of the advantages of a personalized Ath.ena Card .

The personalized Ath.ena Card at a glance:

  • What is it? Plastic rechargeable card with the photo and name of the passenger it belongs to. It can be charged with any fare, up to a 365-day ticket or an amount up to 50 euros.
  • Who is it for? The frequent users of Athens transport as well as anyone who wants a half-priced ticket.
  • The good: You can buy tickets online and charge your card using your smartphone or a ticket machine, you can re-issue it if you lose it.
  • The bad: Issuing it can be a hassle, there are limits as to how many tickets you can charge it with.

Here’s a table with some main differences between the 3 types of Athens Transport Tickets & Cards:

greece train travel pass

B. Athens Transport Fares

Remember that regardless of what type of ticket you are going to choose, all fares:

  • Can be bought regardless of when they are going to be used. Any fare is valid with the first “touch in” of the card.
  • Fares that aren’t used, remain inside the Ath.ena Card or Ath.ena Ticket and can be used in the future as long as the ticket or card stays in a good condition.
  • Only personalized Ath.ena Cards can be charged and recharged online. Still though, you’ll need to use a smartphone or go to a ticket machine to charge your card with the fare you bought online, before you can use it.

2.  What fares can I charge my Ath.ena Ticket or Ath.ena Card with?

You can charge and recharge your Ath.ena Ticket or Ath.ena Card with a number of short-term and long-term fares, as seen in the following 3 tables.

You can also charge your Ath.ena Ticket or Card directly with an amount of up to €50, without having to buy a specific fare.

greece train travel pass

  • All of the fares of the table above can be used for an unlimited number of transfers on: city Buses (excluding Airport express buses and X80 line), Trolley-Buses , Tram , Metro (all stations except Airport), Suburban Railway (only the urban section, no Airport).
  • 90-minute tickets are valid for 90 minutes after the first ‘touch in’, 24-hour tickets for 24 hours after the first ‘touch in’, and 5-day tickets for 5×24 hours after the first ‘touch in’. For example, if the first time you use the 5-day ticket is at 10:05 am on Thursday it will be valid until 10:05am on Tuesday.

greece train travel pass

  • Airport Express bus tickets  are valid only for one ride on an airport express bus, and no other transfer.
  • Metro tickets to the airport  are valid for 90 minutes after their validation for transportation and transfers on the same modes as the 90-minute tickets, plus a transfer from/to the airport with the metro. They are NOT valid for rides on Airport express buses.
  • 3 day (tourist) tickets are valid for: 1 round trip from/to Athens International airport by Metro or Express Bus and unlimited travel on all other modes for 3 days (72 hours after the first ‘touch in’), including line X80 (for example from 10am on Friday till 10am on Monday). Both airport transfers must be concluded within 72 hours.

Attention: The following prices are valid for ticket purchases from June 1st 2020 until -at least- September 30th 2021

greece train travel pass

  • Long term tickets are only available through personalized Athe.na Cards.
  • Each ticket is valid starting from the first ‘touch in’, regardless of the day of the month, and until midnight of the last day . For example, a 30-day ticket that is first used at 2:20 pm on October 15 will be valid until 23:59:59 on November 14.
  • Cards for all modes   excluding airport , are valid for unlimited transportation and transfers on city buses (excluding airport lines and X80 line), trolley-buses, tram, metro (excluding travels from/to the airport) and suburban railway (only the urban section excluding airport).
  • Cards for all modes including airport , are valid for unlimited transportation and transfers on these modes plus trips from to/the airport by metro, suburban railway (for trips from/to the urban section plus airport) or bus.

3. What kind of ticket do I need to travel from/to the Athens airport?

To travel from to/the Athens airport and the city of Athens you need one of the following tickets:

  • A metro ticket for the airport
  • A return ticket to the airport by Metro within 48 hours
  • An Airport E xpress bus ticket
  • A 3-day (tourist) ticket
  • Any long-term ticket (from 30 days) which includes airport transfers

NO other tickets are valid for travelling from/to the Athens airport and the city.

See also: How to get to the Athens airport and the port – All the information you need about how to travel between the Athens airport (and the port of Piraeus) and the center of Athens using public transport.

4. I’m flying to Athens for a few days. Any advice on which ticket I should use?

It all depends on how you’re going to travel between Athens and the airport , how often you’re going to use public transport while in Athens, and how many days you’re going to stay.

  • If you plan to stay in Athens for up to 3 days , you should consider purchasing a 3-day (tourist) ticket (€20) upon your arrival at the airport. Especially if you travel between the airport and the city center by Metro, and also take a few shorter rides while in Athens, this should be the best ticket for you.  However, if you’re going to use an express bus for the airport (€5.50 per route) and then take the metro while in the city just a few times it might be better purchasing 90-minute tickets (€1.20 each, cheaper if you buy several) or get a 24 hour ticket (€4.10). (Remember, 90-minute tickets, 24 hours, and 5 days tickets are not valid for trips from/to the airport.)
  • If you plan to stay in Athens for longer than 3 days , you will definitely need separate tickets for your Airport – Athens center (and vice versa) trips and your trips within Athens. Express buses from/to the airport (€5.50) cost cheaper than taking the Metro (€9). For your trips within Athens, a 5 days ticket (€8.20), or a 24 hours ticket (€4.10) might be cheaper than purchasing several 90-minute tickets (€1.20 each, cheaper if you buy several) for every trip.

5. Who can use a Reduced Price Ticket or travel Free of Charge?

Reduced price tickets (also known as ‘half priced’ although they’re cheaper than that) for Athens public transport are available for:

  • Children aged 7-12 (regardless of nationality)
  • Teenagers aged 13-17  (including 17, regardless of nationality) – ID card or passport needed
  • Seniors over the age of 65 (regardless of nationality) – ID card or passport needed
  • Students at public Greek universities and TEI (regardless of nationality, ERASMUS students included) as long as they have an academic ID card ( issued online ) with the indication “ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΕΙΣΙΤΗΡΙΟΥ”.
  • IEK (state-run or private) students up to the age of 22, with a student pass
  • Students who study at universities outside Greece up to the age of 24 (including those aged 24, regardless of nationality), after showing a Student Card – University ID card and passport or ID card.
  • Members of Greek families with 4 children or more, with a special pass.

Also, free of charge travel is available, among others, for:

  • Children under the age of 6 (including those aged 6), regardless of nationality. No need to issue a ticket/card, children travel accompanied by an adult.
  • Unemployed citizens of Greece, with a valid OAED card (excluding trips on suburban railway). Issue of personalized card and monthly recharge required.
  • Disabled persons, citizens of Attica region. Issue of personalized card and recharge required.

If you are eligible for a half-priced ticket, you will have to issue a personalized Ath.ena Card . Alternatively, you can buy half priced tickets at all suburban railway stations (and only there). The fare will be loaded on a “train ticket” which is valid for transfers all over Athens.

C. Charging and recharging tickets and cards

6.  how and where can i buy and recharge an ath.ena ticket.

Ath.ena Tickets are available at every open Athens transport ticket office, as well as on automatic ticket machines. Also, at a variety of locations (newsagents, kiosks etc.) all over Athens.

You can buy an Ath.ena Ticket online, as long as you are already a registered user of an Ath.ena Card (in that case you’ll receive a code and issue it at a ticket machine).

According to the Athens Transport authority, credit cards are accepted at all ticket offices and ticket machines.

Since there are no half priced Ath.ena Tickets , you don’t need to show any document in order to buy a ticket.

You can recharge an Ath.ena Ticket at all Athens transport ticket offices, as well as on automatic ticket machines.

Locations and hours of operation of Athens Transport Ticket offices Ticket offices are open at: Most metro stations (including Airport) and 2 tram stops At some bus stοps (list in Greek) You can also see a map of all points you can buy and recharge Athe.na Tickets and Cards (only in Greek as of 2020)

Place your ticket or card in the recharge slot before you tap this. Press ‘Cancel’ if you want to exit the menu completely. The single ticket is the last option (90 minutes). ‘2 trips’ means two 90-minute tickets that you can use for numerous transfers while they’re valid. After you choose your fare (‘product type’ according to the machine, you can choose how many of them (tickets NOT fares) you want (if you’re buying an Ath.ena Ticket) and the way you will pay: If you choose to pay by Cash, the screen will show you what banknotes and coins are accepted ( note that banknotes of much larger value than your ticket are not accepted ): If you choose to pay by credit card, check the small screen over the credit card slot: Recharging you Ath.ena Card is a similar process (you use the ‘Top Up’ option).

7.  How and where can I buy an anonymous Ath.ena Card?

You can buy an anonymous Ath.ena Card from every open Athens Transport ticket office (see a list above, under question 6). You cannot buy it on automatic machines or online. Credit cards are accepted at all metro and tram ticket offices according to the Athens Transport authority.

You don’t need to show any document in order to buy an anonymous Ath.ena Card .

You can recharge your anonymous Ath.ena Card at all Athens transport ticket offices, as well as on ticket machines.

8.  How and where can I buy a personalized Ath.ena Card?

You can issue a personalized Ath.ena Card at specific Athens transport ticket offices. In particular, at most but not all open Metro stations and at the bus ticket offices in the airport and at Syntagma square (see list and times of operation above, under question 6).

If you are a resident of Greece , you can issue a personalized Ath.ena Card online and have it mailed to a Greece address. In this case though it’s impossible to predict how long it will take to arrive. More info (in Greek)

To issue a card for the first time , you need your passport (if you are a Greek citizen you need your Greek ID card and an AMKA document instead). For a half-priced card, you also need to show the appropriate document that proves you are eligible (for example university card). An online application can speed up the process [ link – make sure to print the QR code] but you’ll still need to go to a ticket office in order to get your card issued.

During the issuing process, the clerk will take your photo using a webcam and will ask you to type an 8-digit PIN code for your card (make sure you write it down). The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.

You can recharge your personalized Ath.ena Card at Athens transport ticket offices, ticket machines, as well as online through the website athenacard.gr . (You buy a fare or add an amount of money online but the actual “recharging” of the card must take place on a ticket machine or with the Athena Card app for Android phones).

D. Using tickets and cards

9.  how do i use an ath.ena ticket or ath.ena card.

Ath.ena Tickets and Ath.ena Cards are made from different materials but use the same contactless technology.

In buses, trolley-buses and the Tram , you use the blue card readers, installed close to all doors (in buses, -pre COVID-19- you were supposed to enter from the front door). You place your Ath.ena Ticket or Ath.ena Card close to the ‘contact point’, under the screen. A sound and message on the screen (green color) will let you know that your card is valid (you can also see the time or tickets remaining in the card). Red color on the screen means that something went wrong (empty or invalid card/ticket etc). You need to touch in every time you enter a bus/trolley bus/tram , regardless of the fare you are using. You DON’T need to touch in again before exiting the vehicle (you won’t be over-charged if your ticket is still valid, it’s just not needed).

greece train travel pass

On the metro and suburban railway , you need to pass through the gates installed at every station. Use the card reader on your right side as you’re going through the gate. Again, a sound and message on the screen will let you know whether your card was read successfully, and of course, in that case, the gate will open. You need to do this as you enter AND exit every station.

greece train travel pass

You can see the remaining time of your ticket while touching in the card as well as at ticket machines and ticket offices.

10. How about Athens Suburban Railway and other Railway tickets?

Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) differs from the rest of the Athens public transport network in that it is operated by TrainOSE, a private company. TrainOSE is using a different electronic ticket system which is 100% compatible with the one used on the rest of the transport network.

Ath.ena Tickets and Athena Cards are accepted within the urban section of the Suburban Railway as well as the Airport station. For journeys from/to Athens Airport to/from any station within the urban section, metro tickets for the airport are valid and can be used in place for suburban railway tickets.

Ticket offices at Suburban Railway stations issue a ticket labeled “ TRAIN TICKET ” which is compatible and can be used to travel on buses/metro/tram etc.

  • For journeys to or from stations outside the urban section, you’ll need a more expensive ticket which can be bought at all suburban railway ticket offices (open at every station). More info at TRAINOSE website .

Hi, I recently graduated from high school and I’m starting university in October. Can I buy a reduced ticket?

Unless you are under 18, no.

Hello! Can the 5-day ticket be used for the trams that go to the beach (eg. Glyfada)?

This is ALREADY answered above. All Athens transport tickets can be used for Tram.

Hi, can I use the trainose ticket for metro and other transport or is it meant only for the suburban? Thanks in advance.

Yes they are valid for 90 minutes after the first validation.

Thanks a lot!

I am staying on Ilioupoleos, near the First Cemetery. Where is the nearest place I can purchase an Ath.ena ticket for the bus?

There is no list of every point of sale available. Check at your nearest Tram stop though and ask around at newsagent’s and kiosks.

Hello! I am student from Russia. Can I buy and use reduced ticket? I have ISIC.

Hello, someone mentioned recently that the ISIC card is not accepted, which I haven’t confirmed yet. If you have a card of pass from your own university, use that one.

Ok, but I don’t think I can use cards from my univercity, they’re in russian lenguage all. It’d be great if you write here when you’ll confirm question about ISIC.

Say you’re a student, show both and hopefully they accept it. I’ll update with information about ISIC if they reply.

Hello! Can you please tell if my 3-days tourist ticket is suitable for a one way trip to Corinth by Proastiakos? Thank you in advance!

Hello, the 3-day ticket (and any other Athens Transport tickets) are valid only up to Magoula station. To go to Corinth you need a ticket to that station which you can buy from any suburban railway station.

Thank you very much!

I will land at the Athens Airport Sunday at 22.20; after clearing the passport control (I come from outside the Schengen area) will be probably 22.50. Will I be able to buy the 22euro, 3 day (72 hours) tourist ticket from somewhere at that time? If yes, from a counter or from a machine? Thanks.

When you exit the airport and you are at the airport bus station there is both a ticket office and a ticket machine. The same applies for the airport metro station. (Otherwise, how someone would be able to buy a ticket?)

Tip: If you buy the ticket from the ticket machine, it’s not called “Tourist ticket” there. To buy it, you select language > Buy travel product > Athens & Airport, Return > 3 days

Is there a mobile ticketing option, to buy tickets on my phone? The old OASA app apparently no longer works.

No, since it wouldn’t be compatible with the current ticketing system and you also wouldn’t be able to open the gates at metro stations.

There is only an app that you can use to top up your personalized ATH.ENA Card using your smartphone (only on NFC-supported devices)

Hello, can I use ISIC card for reduced tickets? Thanks! 🙂

Yes, of course, together with your passport to prove you’re 25 or younger.

Well, They actually refused to sell me reduced tickets today. Twice. At Syntagma metrostation and earlier at the airport.

I’m sorry to hear that. Next time (if you’re planning to use the metro again), show them the page from the Public Transport Authority website that proves you’re eligible for reduced tickets: http://oasa.gr/content.php?id=mkom

Kalimera ! Hello !

We ‘re a french company planning an holiday camp for teenagers in Greece in July 2018, travelling only with national buses.

Because we will be a group of 18 people, we need to insure to have places enough in the buses so we would like to book our rides in advance.

For this, we would need some advises please :

Which is the best way to book in advance the rides with buses ktel ? and which are the different possibilities (online booking / booking at ktel offices in some cities / booking at tourist offices in some cities…?).

Moreover, we are interested by any kinf of advises, information, documents which could help us in the organisation of our transports and for avoiding any kind of difficulties during our travel.

Thanks a lot ! Best regards.

Hello! As you may have noticed this site is an informational site about the public transport in Athens (not connected with the Public Transport Authority) and this page about the tickets and cards.

If you want to contact with the KTEL companies, visit their websites:

Attica region KTEL: http://ktelattikis.gr/en/

Thessaloniki region KTEL: https://ktelthes.gr/en/

And since you are 18 persons, I suggest contacting a travel agent to help you organize your trip and book bus trips, hotels etc.

Hi, I have 5 day ticket, which I validated at Saturday 19.5. around 13:00. After validation it showed date and time 23.5. 23:59. On this side you say it’s valid for 5x24h, but from the validation machine in bus, it look like it’s valid for 5 calendar day, which one is true. Can I still use ticket at Thursday 24.5. morning? Thanks.

Hello! I remind you that this site is an informational one and not the official site of the Public Transport Authority.

Regarding your question, I also remember being for 5x24h and that what the official site of the ticketing system says (www.athenacard.gr in Greek only) but if what you say is true they probably changed it to match the way the 30, 90, 180 & 365-day ticket products work.

Just to be sure, go to a ticket machine to check what it writes (you put the card in the case and you tap Card Info). If it says until 23/5 23:59, it’ll be valid until then.

I bought two tickets from machine at airport and machine gave only one. I have a receipt for 2 . Staff were so rude and no one help . What do I do ? I have paid €44

Hello! Which ticket product did you select? (And keep the receipt)

Also, I want to remind you that this site is not the one of the public transport authority, so we can’t do something about the rude staff (unfortunately some of them are rude, but not all of them).

Is there a ticket office at the Airport Metro station to buy half price 3 day tourist tickets for my children? If so, where is it located? Thank you

Hello! There is one, as you enter the station when coming from the airport. At the level where the ticket gates are.

Unfortunately, there is no half-priced 3 day ticket, as you may have read at the article. So the only options are the 5€ airport tickets and single tickets of 0.60€ from the rest of your journeys here.

I did miss the red ‘X’in the chart above for the 3 day tourist ticket half price. My mistake, thanks

Hello, I’m coming to Athens next week and I’ll be living there for a month. I’m not a citizen of Athens nor Greece, I’m from Serbia, so I was wondering whether it will be possible for me to get that personalized card. Considering the fact that I’m also a student, I should be able to get the half priced card. Is this all doable? Thank you in advance!!!

Hello! Yes, it’s possible using your passport. If the ticket office staff decline to issue a card with passport, insist. Just make sure, that the stations issues personalized cards.

If you are a student and 25 or younger, you are eligible for half priced ticket by showing your student ID card.

Hi, I would like to inquire the tickets for suburban railway. I with my husband would like to take the suburban from airport to Athens railway station to start the journey. Is it correct that we buy two 24 h tickets and plus two metro ticket for the airport? I’m not sure that the metro ticket can be available for suburban. Another question is about the recharge problem, we can buy the Ath.ena tickets for 24h-ticket and metro ticket at the same time or we should buy one product (24h-ticket) first, then use the ticket to recharge another product? Thank you.

Hello! The Suburban Railway needs a special ticket from the airport station. If you only want to do this trip (Airport – Athens), you need only the Suburban Railway airport tickets.

At the airport station, you’ll be given different electronic tickets for the Suburban Railway (not ATH.ENA Tickets), which are used in the same way. The good thing is that you will be able to recharge them with the 24h tickets at the metro ticket machines at Athens Railway Station (Larissa station metro station).

And you firstly have to use the airport tickets in order to recharge the electronic ticket with the 24h product, for example. Only ATH.ENA Cards support the ability to store 2 ticket products simultaneously.

Thank you so much for your prompt response.

Hi, where are the locations of the tickets offices in the city centre? Is it possible to buy Athena 5 day ticket at the kiosk? Thank you in advance

You can find ticket offices at every metro station and you can buy any type of ticket from there.

If you mean the places which sell newspapers, drinks, chips etc. with the term “kiosk”, no, you can only buy packs of 5 or 10+1 single tickets from there.

Hi, We (my wife, daughter and myself) will travel to Athens next week. My daughter is six years old. According to this website, she does not need any ticket. Please let me know how can she pass through the metro gates without tickets? Thanks in advance.

Hello! Right now, the gates have not closed at all stations yet, so you touch-in with your ticket and pass through the open gates. You won’t face any problems with your daughter.

On stations with closed gates, there is at least one open gate for any unemployed or handicapped persons who haven’t issued their free cards already; so again you have no problems.

In case these gates are closed when you come, your daughter have to pass with you or with your wife, together from the large gate for handicapped persons, which has more sensitive sensors. (You touch-in and pass together).

In any case, there is no chance of your daughter being injured by the gates, since they’re not closing if there’s a person in-between the “gate pillars”.

Hi, i have to go from Pireus port to Athens.can i use one 90-minute ticket for bus x96 from Pireus to Edem and then use it for a tram? is bus x96 included in the ticket? is there any alternative? thank you

Hello! Firstly, the X96 airport bus has a special 6€ ticket and secondly if you board on this bus, you can only deboard at the airport (Boarding rules apply on all airport express bus lines).

The most obvious and easy alternative is to take the metro line 1 (green line) from the Piraeus metro station.

We are visiting Athens for one day next month; a mixture of business and pleasure. We fly in from Rhodes in the morning and return in the evening. We have several visits to make and wish to use the Metro Lines 3 and 2 for all of them, there will be five or six journeys. Ideally we would like get to the airport and buy a one-day Metro pass which includes the airport and city and allows several journeys. Is there such a ticket or do we need to buy the 3 day visitor pass?

Hi! No, unfortunately the 24h pass does not include a trip to the airport.

So, the cheapest solution is the 3 day ticket of 22€ instead of a 24h ticket + 2 airport tickets (4.5€ + 20€ = 24.5€)

Hi! Is it possible to combine the METRO Airport Ticket from/to Stations Pallini, Kantza, Koropi for 6 EUR and the 5 days Ticket? From Pallini the 5 days Ticket should be valid, right? So I suppose I would just need to buy the 6 EUR airport ticket and not the 10 EUR one.

Hello! Note: The 5 day ticket is valid from Koropi station; so Pallini station is included.

And yes, you can make this combination. You’ll buy the 6€ Airport-Pallini ticket, you will deboard at one of the stations Pallini, Peania-Kantza or Koropi, you’ll touch-out with the 6€ ticket, you’ll buy the 5-day ticket (9€) from the ticket machine, you’ll touch-in and you’ll continue your journey.

Thank you for your answer. It is not possible to already buy the 5-day ticket at the airport and activate it there so I don’t have to exit at one of the stations?

Firsty, I’m not sure if the 5 day ticket is sold at the airport station. Secondly, I remind you that the system works contactlessly, like the Oyster card system for example, so apart from the fact that you won’t be able to get through the gates a second time to touch-in the other ticket, the gates will probably show an error message with the 5 day ticket, since it cannot be used at the airport station.

Hello! I’m soon coming to Athens for a week. I’m disabled and have a disabled parking car issued in Poland, but valid in the entire EU. Am I elligible for free public transportation or do I need to be an Attica citizen, or file some additional paperwork? Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello! Unfortunately, you have to be a permanent resident of the Attica prefecture to be eligible for free public transportation. So, you pay the full ticket price or if you are a student of age 25 or younger you are eligible for reduced (-50%) ticket prices.

Coming to Athens next month and staying one week. Do I understand correctly, with the 3 day tourist pass, BOTH airport trips must be done within the 3 day period? So no use getting this pass for a 7 day trip – the return to the airport would no longer be valid? Second question. Does the 5 day pass include travel to the port (Piraeus)? 3rd question: No such thing as a 7 day pass?

Hello! 1) Exactly as you describe it. 2) Yes, it does. Only the airport metro station and the airport buses need a special ticket. 3) Unfortunately, no. It’s indeed an issue. So if you’re going to stay for seven days, you’ll need 1 5-day ticket (9€) and 2 24h ones (2×4.5=9€). Plus the airport tickets.

I have read that we could buy a tourist card voor 7 days to our visit in Athens. I also saw that as 65 years old we could have a reduction to the price but is not clear of that includes a tourist cart and if not which ones could we use with reduction? Thank you

Hello! The tourist ticket is for 3 days, not 7. The tourist ticket doesn’t have a discount for elderly people or persons under 18. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t buy one.

If you want to buy tickets with 50% discount, you can only buy single tickets of 0.60€ or tickets packs of 2 (1.20€), 5 (3€) or 10+1 (6€) tickets.

The cheapest solution is, of course, the 10+1 tickets pack, since with this pack each ticket costs 0.54€ instead of 0.60€.

*With the term “pack”, we mean that all the tickets of the pack are included in 1 paper ticket.

thank you very much i understand now how it works

Dear I have two questions. First we will be arriving on sunday 15 of April, having a training course at AUA Athens, covered by Erasmus plus project. mainly we are aged in the 40’s and 50’s. could we use reduced tickets for our stay in Athena. second, can we use the 5 day tickets for multiple trips or for just one trip.

1) Unfortunately, eligible for reduced ticket are only persons under 18, students of public universities up to the age of 25 and people who are 65 or older.

2) The 5 day ticket (9€) is valid for unlimited trips in 120 hours since the first touch-in of the ticket. Remember, that this ticket does not include trips to the airport; you have to buy the separate 10€ ticket for each person (this applies for the 5 day ticket, as well; each ticket is only for 1 person).

You can use the 5 day ticket for all means of transport except all the airport buses (X93, X95, X96 & X97), the seasonal bus line X80 and in the section Koropi – Airport of metro line 3.

Remember to touch-in and touch-out every time you pass through a gate and every time you board a bus, trolley or tram.

As it’s not mentioned in the article, if you prefer credit/debit cards as payment method for buying the tickets, you should use the white/blue ticket machines which accept bank cards, while not all ticket offices do.

Hope you’ll enjoy your stay!

Hello, What’s the price of the Ath.ena Ticket itself? Do I need to pay some fee and then charge it with the tickets I need?

Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hello! Both the ATH.ENA Ticket and the ATH.ENA Card are free. You only pay the value of the ticket.

Hello, I read down in the comments that a 3-day ticket includes roundtrip airport transfer as well 3 days of travelling on buses, trams AND the metro, however up in the article it says “roundtrip to airport and unlimited travel on all other modes for 3 days’. Can somebody confirm that these ALL OTHER MODES include the metro trips in the city (aside from the airport transfer) for the 3-day ticket.

Thanks in advance!

You can use all modes of transport (incl. metro, trams, buses and trolleys) for an unlimited period during these 3 days. And you have also a round trip to the airport with metro or with airport buses (X93, X95, X96 & X97).

What you can’t do is to take an airport bus or go to the airport metro station before the return trip.

The 3 days (72 hours) start counting from the first touch-in of the ticket at the start of the trip from the airport. You have to touch-in and touch-out with your ticket every time you pass through a gate (open or closed) and touch-in every time you board a bus, trolley or tram.

Hello, could you tell me when is the first train to the airport (LINE 3)-somewhere write 6.30am, somewhere-5.30am? Thank you in advance!

At 5:30 am from Aghia Marina and at 6:30 from the Airport. More info about the line 3 timetable here: http://www.stasy.gr/index.php?id=70&L=1

Hello, could somebody confirm to me that foreigners can have personalized ATH.ENA cards? For example those which cost 30 euros for one month?

Of course, you can. You just need your passport instead of the Greek Social Security Number. If the person at the ticket office refuses, insist because it’s possible (some ticket office staff, just don’t know it). After you issue your card, you can top it up at a ticket machine with any ticket including the monthly one (30€) or ask the person at the ticket office to top it up for you.

Note that ticket offices of specific stations issue personalized ATH.ENA Cards.

Oh great! Thank you for the answer Dimitris!

I am trying to locate some information about the grey Metro line that overlaps with the airport line, i need to travel along this line for several days and want to know if the 5 day pass will be valid for this route? My daily route will be Athens -> Paiania-Kantza -> Athens I can’t seem to locate any info on the fares?

That’s the Suburban railway not a metro line and the Athens station where it’s heading is not at the centre of Athens. If you need to go to the centre of athens from Paiania-Kantza, you’ll take the blue line towards Ag. Marina and you’ll get down at the Syntagma station (costs 1.40€).

The Suburban railway from Paiania-Kantza to the Athens station (which is connected with the Larissa Station metro station), costs 1.40€ as well (the 1.40€ metro tickets are valid on this route). In a white/blue ticket machine, you select: Buy Product > Athens Area > 90 minutes. Don’t forget to touch-in at the ticket barriers!

Thank you very much Dimitris, appreciate the info, its a great help!

Καλημέρα! Μήπως γνωρίζετε πότε θα ενεργοποιηθεί η φόρτιση του δωρεάν κομίστρου (επιδότηση) στα αυτόματα μηχανήματα;

Όχι. Ο ΟΑΣΑ δεν έχει ανακοινώσει κάτι ακόμα. Κάποια εκδοτήρια λένε από αυτή τη βδομάδα. Δεν είναι 100% σίγουρο, όμως.

Ευχαριστώ πολύ για την άμεση απάντηση. Ας ελπίσουμε ότι θα ανακοινωθεί κάτι σύντομα! Ισχύει ότι η καθυστέρηση έχει να κάνει με την LG και την ενημέρωση των μηχανημάτων;

Ευχαριστώ πολύ για την ενημέρωση!

Γειά σας! Μήπως γνωρίζετε αν υπάρχει κάτι νεότερο σχετικά με τη φόρτιση δωρεάν κομίστρου για ανέργους;

Δυστυχώς όχι.

Thank you for you informative reply.

Does anyone know what happens with the fantastic App for smartphones? Where you could buy tickets on the go? You could get what ever ticket you needed, 3days, 7 days 90’ Airport. etc. And it gave you an electronic ticket readable for both machines and humans. It was the future, this mess seems so complicated… Some time ago I tried to get a ticket being in Paleo Faliro. The machines couldn’t help me (as mentioned before it only had the options for checking your balance and getting lost in the meny’s. No one around knew anything. I had to take a cab.

But anyways. You are doing a great job here helping out. Thanks!

Firstly, this site has no connection with the public transport company; it’s an independent informational site.

Regarding your question, the TfA app was removed from both the Play Store and the App Store on October 1st 2017, since it was not compatible with the new ticketing system (the fare gates, to be specific), for 2 reasons: 1) The gates can read RFID tags only, while smartphones use NFC technology 2) A lot of passengers who use iPhones would not be able to use the app anymore, since Apple hasn’t enabled the use of the NFC chip by third party developers.

Regarding the automatic machines, the option “Buy Product” for buying a new ticket has always been there since their installation period between February and July 2017.

The good news is that the public transport company’s CEO has said last year, that a future expansion of the system will allow the use of supported smartphones as tickets like with the previous system. Until then, the only way for someone to have tickets on the go is to issue a personalized card and download the “ATH.ENA Card” app for Android phones only, with which he can buy tickets and them load them into the card using the NFC chip.

Thank you for your informative reply.

Hi I will arrive at the airpot and will need to go to athens centre for 2 days..then will need to go to megara greece for 6 days (and will not need any transport whilst in megara). however will need transport again to go back to athens and back to airport. what is your advice?

Hello! If you want to go directly to the airport from Megara, I suggest taking the Suburban Railway which costs 10€. You’ll take the train from Megara towards Athens and you’ll get down at the Kato Acharnai station. Then, from this station you’ll take another Suburban Railway train towars the airport, which is the last station of that line.

If you want to go to Athens before going to the airport, you’ll take the same train from Megara and you’ll get down at the Athens station (costs 3€) and then you can take the metro to go where you want to go (costs 1.40€).

Hi, can you tell me how much a 3 day pass is? Is it valid to and from the airport? And on all metro and buses? Thanks. Where can it be purchased upon my arrival at athens airport?

It’s 22€. It’s valid on all metro, buses, trolleys & trams and it includes one round trip to the airport with the metro or with the airport buses. You can purchase it at the airport metro station at a ticket machine, where you press: Buy Product > Athens & Airport, Round > 3 Days.

You also need to touch-in and touch-out every time you pass through a gate (even if it’s open) and touch-in every time you board a bus, trolley or tram.

The 3 days start counting from the first touch-in and the airport round trip must be in these 3 days.

Hi, I would like to ask if the trip with the 3 day tourist pass needs to be in the 3 days or can be done within the 3 days.

What do you mean exactly? And I suppose you refer the round trip to the airport.

Yes, I might have got it wrong. It seemed that the trip needs to be done in 3 days, which means I can not use it for transfer, if i have only one overnight stay, because I would do the trip not in the 3 days but within 3 days.

Okay, I got it now.

You can do the return trip whenever you want within the 72 hours.

I will be in Athens for five days but not in a row. I will be on a tour and will spend days split up in Athens. Can I get the 5 day pass for the five days I will be there?

The 5-day ticket is valid for five days from the moment you first use it, so no.

Is there an expiry on these tickets? ie. if I bought one for one trip and then went back home and came back in 2 yrs time, is the ticket still valid if I had credits?

Officially, Ath.ena Tickets last for a year. Ath.ena Cards last for 10 years.

Is it 10 years from the purchase of the Ath.ena Card? or from last use?

From the purchase. For example, I issued my card on September 24th 2017 and it’s valid until September 24th 2027. Until then, I can recharge it as many times as I want.

Hello, according to an answer from ΟΑΣΑ (the transport authority) last year, transport in free only for disabled people who are residents of Attica region.

Κρίμα…

when you buy the pack of 11 tickets …are they good whenever you use them or only in consectutive days…?

You can use them whenever you want: in the same day, in different days, consecutive or not. And each ticket in the “pack” is valid for 90 minutes.

Also, there is a daily cap of 4 tickets per day, that means, if you have already used 4 tickets of the pack in one day, no other ticket will be used. Despite this, you continue to touch-in and touch-out every time you pass through a gate (even if it’s open) and touch-in every time you board a bus, trolley or tram.

Thank you very much. Efharisto poli.

You’re welcome! Parakalo (Παρακαλώ).

Hello, I will spend 6 weeks in Athens in summer, that’s why I’ve looked for informations about Athens public transport. I was wondering if I could use reduced tickets or travel free of charge only with my french student card? Do I need to show an europeen student card ?

Many thanks, Kalilou

Hello! Since, you are a foreign student and only if you are 25 or younger, you are eligible for reduced ticket price (50% discount) . I think you are ok with your French card, but in order to be sure, it’s better to apply for a European or International Student ID, if you can.

We are six UK pensioners, 60+, arriving 1800 hrs Monday 5th. I have booked a private transfer to our hotel near Omonia.

We plan to sight see 6th, ferry to Aegina 7th, sight see 8th then return by public transport to the airport 9AM 9th ( within 72 hours of first using public transport) to collect a minibus and begin travelling on to Olympia and Nafplio.

Which ticket do you suggest? Where/ when can we most easily buy them with our schedule? Can we buy reduced tickets at a machine or only “face to face” at a station office?

I personally am planning to go to Rafina one day. Will the Athens ticket cover this trip? Where is the Rafina terminal in Athens?

Many thanks,

Hello! A) Your tickets depend on how many times you’ll take the public transport. Note, that only if you are over 65 years old, you are eligible for reduced tickets. • For those who are between 60 and 64: If you’re going to use public transport for more than 3 times day, you should get 2 24h tickets (2×4.5=9€), one for each full day, and per person. Otherwise, get 1 ticket for 2 90min rides (2.7€), per person. • For those who are 65 or older: Buy at least 2 tickets for 2 90min rides (2×1.2=2.4€), per person (The 24h ticket is not available, as reduced) Then for the airport ride buy one ticket per person (10€ full price and 5€ reduced) Don’t forget to touch-in and touch-out every time you pass through a gate and touch-in every time you board a bus, trolley or tram.

B) Because the tickets are the same on the outside, I suggest buying them before travelling, so you won’t be able to forget which ticket is for which ride.

C) Reduced tickets can be bought only at the station office.

D) You’ll be able to use one of the 90min rides to go to Rafina, only if you take the 314 bus, which departs from Doukissis Plakentias metro station (line 3). You can find more info abou the line’s timetable here: http://telematics.oasa.gr/en/#lineDetails_1161_314 : ST.DOUK.PLAKENTIAS – PALLINI – RAFINA_212-54

Hello, 1) If you want to use the metro, it’s better if each one has their own card. Otherwise, one should enter (or exit), then pass the card to the other to enter too. 2) Whichever ticket product you charge the card with it remains valid indefinitely until it’s used. 3) Only one ticket product can be used at a time. If you want to go to the airport you should either a) have no other ticket product in your card apart from an airport ticket b) charge the card with the amount of money the airport ticket costs (€10) and that will be used instead or c) buy a simple Ath.ena ticket charged with an airport ticket.

1) You can’t touch-in the same card or ticket twice. The gate won’t open the second time. So, please, remove it.

No, only the new types of tickets are used now.

Yes, Ath.ena Tickets are rechargeable as long as they are empty (like in your case). You only pay for the ticket you charge it with.

You need to swipe your card every time you enter a bus and every time you enter AND exit a metro station.

I live in Glyfada. 10 days ago I purchased a rechargeable ath.ena TICKET (paper). I had successfully topped up that card once. Yesterday I tried to recharge it again and the machine informed me: Sorry. you can only recharge plastic cards. THERE IS NO CURRENT info posted ANYwhere. There were 5 other very angry people (all native Greeks, not foreigners) at that Espiridon tram stop in Glyfada yesterday holding rechargeable tix that are now, inexplicably, invalid. NO INFO posted at stop. NO updated info here. NOBODY could get where they needed to go without risking fines for riding with no valid ticket. THIS IS UNACCEPABLE. You all need to STOP making changes without informing the public. This is a disorganized, totally mishandled MESS!!!!! PLEASE post updates immediately to prevent confusion among residents NOW and before the tourist season starts or this will be COMPLETE chaos. Sorry to say you have completely screwed this transition up. Please help.

Hello! Firstly, this site has nothing to do with the transport authority. It’s an independent news site.

Secondly, ATH.ENA Tickets are rechargeable. Probably, that specific machine had a problem. You can try the machine of another tram stop.

Sorry. Your site name is a bit misleading. I tried 2 machines at Glfada Espiridon and Glyfada Katraki. Tickets cannot be purchased there. You are not given that option. It no longer works. Paper tickets cannot be recharged. Maybe this is a problem with 2 machines. Maybe they have changed someting and you don’t know about it yet. Is it possible for you to find out specific locations where one can buy a ticket from a human in greater Athens and suburbs? I’d say a large number of local tram riders are confused this morning by this. Thanks for this site and your respo se. Sorry I vented to the wrong people!

Is the paper ticket completely spent? It might prevent you from recharging if you have rides remaining.

There’s a list of ticket issuing points at the athenacard site, but I can’t find an english version.

In short: all metro stations, Syntagma and Aghia Fotini tram stops (but note that buses replace trams in that section until march 6, so it might be closed), and most main bus terminals (Glyfada is one, the kiosk should be in the main square, next to the 120 bus)

Good point. No, the ticket had a zero balance. THANK YOU for ticket-purchase site info. Very helpful!!!! I’m in the tourist biz and will highly recommend your site. ?

I just sent an email to the authority to ask them if something changed or if it’s a malfunction. If and when they answer, I’ll update you.

Note: The Syntagma tram stop is currently under renovation/re-construction, so there’s no ticket office there, at the moment.

I could not top up and I could not buy a ticket. The only screen that appeared was the one that offered top-ups, check balance, or purchase online. The check balance worked. The top up did not…maybe malfunctioning machine? It was a totally different home screen than 10 days ago. And no way to get to original home screen. Several people tried this…not just me. Thank you for checking into this; it’s important. Yesterday, I just walked to where I needed to go but others were either stranded or had to go by taxi…because nobody knew where else to buy tix. Suggestion: authorities should post ticket-purchase locations at each stop…

I see. I’ll also check a machine at a metro station when I’m going to take it at noon, to see if it works (they’re the same machines).

I think they should leave well enough alone! It was EXTREMELY user-friendly and easy to use 10 days ago! Will be interested to hear what you find out. Thanks again.

I know that it’s already user-friendly and by redesigning it, they’re going to confuse people. The only thing they should add is the ability to automatically open the top up menu, when you place the card in the special “case”.

Good morning; In a couple of week we will be in Athens and we need a 5 days ticket. I have an idea and I don t know if I m right. : If we arrive at the airport and take a single ticket on the metro from Airport to Koropi. From Koropi we can use the 5-days ticket. Is it as simple as that? Because this way , we don t need the expensive airport-transfer ticket. Same idea for the trip back. Thanks for your great website!

To go from the airport to Koropi, you’ll buy the 6€ ticket for the Airport to Pallini route. Then you’ll touch-out at Koropi with that ticket, you’ll buy the 5-day ticket, you’ll touch-in again and you’ll continue your journey.

Hello, I will be in Athens for three days in June. If I buy the “3 day tourist ticket”, the included airporttransfair is “one time only”? Or can I go back to the Airport on the third day with this ticket, when I allready used it on the first day (Airport – Centre , Centre – Airport). Thank you in advance 🙂

The ticket includes unlimited travel for 72 hours in all means of transport (except the airport) + 1 trip from + 1 trip to the airport.

The trips to the airport must be done within the 72 hours, which start to count from the first touch-in.

Please, note that this ticket is not officially called “Tourist ticket”! To buy this ticket from an automatic ticket machine, you select: Buy product > Athens & Airport, Round > 3 Days

There is no difference in the price.

Hello, i was in Athens airport last October and bought the Ath.ena Card, but didn’t use it. Can i use this ticket in March 2018? Thank you

Yes. The ticket products or stored value in ATH.ENA Cards do not expire.

As for the cards themselves, they expire in 10 years from the issue date.

Υπάρχει η δυνατότητα αγοράς εισιτηρίου της γραμμής express προς αεροδρόμιο (€6) από τον οδηγό κατά την επιβίβαση στο μέσο της διαδρομής, όπως γινόταν με τα χάρτινα εισιτήρια, ή πρέπει να το έχουμε προμηθευτεί εκ των προτέρων;

Ναι, μπορείτε να το αγοράσατε κανονικά από τον οδηγό, όπως πάντα.

Hello I would like to know where to buy a personalized 30-day card with the active airport option at Athena International Airport

Hi! You can issue a personalized card at the airport bus ticket office, which is located outside arrival exits 4-5. Just ask the person at the ticket office to top up the card with an Athens&Airport 30-day ticket, which costs 49€ (or 25€ if you’re a student or older than 65).

I asked at the bus kiosk today, they said they didn’t do them 🙁

Unfortunately, some ticket office staff don’t follow the official rules. They actually could issue a personalized card.

Anyway, you can go to ticket office of one of the following metro stations and issue your personalized card (make sure to have your passport with you) https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5311549c23031802fca2103c2416fe96a0bf772ba6e4504b53042e8a4ea2851d.png

Also, if you want, you can fill this form ( https://athenacard.gr/QR_request.dev ) and either print the QR code or screenshot it with your mobile. You can, then, show it when at the ticket office, so you can save some time at the ticket office. Since, the site it;s in Greek, I provide you a picture, with the site translated to English. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/2bb024ffabf3675069ad07fe546d9b6509d3dde298cdf5b332e45649a7ab7439.png

I know about getting it in the city, I already have one, this is for a friend who will arrive in the early hours of the morning next month, wants the card & be able to use it immediately to get into the city. She will of course have her passport on her anyway, but what can she do if they refuse?

Oh, so it’s not for you. That’s why they refused to issue the card. She has to go herself to issue a personalized card.

Yes I know, my question was ‘My friend will arrive at the airport next month, do you issue these cards (showing him mine) at this kiosk so she can get one on arrival?’ He said they didn’t do them, only at the metro ticket office, who don’t do them! If I have an issue like this another time I will ask for their name, I have had some great service regarding transport in Athens, it’s a shame a few give such a bad service & incorrect information, either because they don’t know their job, or don’t want to do it 🙁 We will just have to wait & see, I hope she gets served by someone who will help her. She will fill in the form you provided to hopefully make things easier.

Also, if you want, you can fill this form ( https://athenacard.gr/QR_request.dev ) and either print the QR code or screenshot it with your mobile. You can, then, present it at the ticket office, so you can save some time at the ticket office. More specifically, on all airport lines, you can board only to go to the airport, you can’t deboard at another station.

There are plenty of buses to choose from; you can plan your route from this site: https://www.google.com/maps/dir///@37.995622,23.751583,13z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e3?utm_medium=et&hl=en

On these buses, you can use the 5-day ticket.

That’s true; only state-run IEK students, as well as university students are eligible of reduced fare. Students of private-run IEK pay full fare.

And 30€/month is not much for unlimited travel.

There are boarding rules as the line is only for trips from/to the airport. In other words you’ll need to use another line for trips within the city. Only airport bus tickets are accepted on the line.

The 5-day ticket doesn’t include transfers to the airport. To take the bus from the airport you will need a special ticket for it (6 euros full price, 3 euros for over 65 y.o.)

Does the ticket office at the airport issue ATH.ENA cards?

The airport metro station ticket office issues non-personalized cards only.

If you want a personalized one, you can go to the airport bus ticket office, which is located outside arrival exits 4 – 5. If you issue one from there and you want to take the metro, tell the person in the ticket office, to top up the card with an aiport metro ticket.

Where can I find a list of metro stations that issue the ATH.ENA cards? Might be helpful to have this on your web site.

Just a reminder: this is not the official website of the company that runs the public transport in Athens.

There’s actually a page at the official website of ATH.ENA Card but it’s in Greek only. So, I attach an image with the metro stations that issue personalized cards.

* All metro stations issue non-personalized cards. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5311549c23031802fca2103c2416fe96a0bf772ba6e4504b53042e8a4ea2851d.png

Perfect. Thanks.

The one at the bus departures.

Hi a bit confused that the returne metro tickets from/to airport valid 24hrs as the table suggested or 7 days as one of the QA (4) states??

It is 48 hours at the moment, I made the correction.

However, at http://www.athenacard.gr/komistra.dev it says that you can return whenever you want.

Thanks for the information you given. Good job

Hi, I’m in Athens in April and I have to drop my hire car off in Koropi which is on the suburban railway (one stop down from the airport) and need to get back into central Athens to finish my break. Can I change trains at Doukissis Plakentias onto the Metro Line 3, and is this the cheapest/best way (using a 90 minute ticket) to get back to Athens?

Hello! Koropi station is on metro line 3 as well! So, you don’t have to change trains, instead you’ll catch a train towards Aghia Marina from Koropi station.

Yes, the cheapest and fastest way is to take the metro and buy a 90 minutes ticket (1.40€).

I suggest, however, buy the ticket in advance, from another metro station, in case the ticket machines at Koropi are out of order.

And suburban trains from Koropi to city center (Attika) are also for 1,4 euro (90 mins)? So, we can walk there from the airport (it is possible on googlemaps) and safe my wife’s daily salary (1,4 instead of 10):D

Yes, it’s the same ticket, but you have two options: • Take the suburban rail and change at Doukissis Plakentias, where you’ll take a metro line 3 train to Ag. Marina • Take the suburban rail until the Athens station, where you’ll change to the metro line 2, towards Elliniko.

Tip 1: Before walking to Koropi, go to the Airport metro station and buy 2 90-minute tickets from the automated machines, in case the ones at Koropi are out of order. In the automatic machine you select: Buy Product > Athens Area > 90 minutes

Tip 2: You can always take the X95 bus to Syntagma sq. which costs 6€ per person.

Thank you so much for such a clear explanation. ευχαριστώ!

Please use the info above. This is the reason I wrote this page.

I’m from Asia ~ I wonder if I travel Athens from 2.5 days and pretty sure that I will take metro for 4 times in separate time and day. Is this will be much cheaper if I buy short-term 2-90 minute * 2 ? or I can just charge enough money to card ? And also can I pre buy the ticket to airport ? pretty thanks ~

Hello you can buy the ticket at the airport. Might work better for you if you charge the card with money instead of tickets because of the different types of tickets you will use (airport and the 90 minute ones)

As the site’s administrator wrote below, you can’t use a photo ID apart from a Greek one.

Indeed, you can travel all around EU with your ID, but the Athens Public Transportation Authority has nothing to do with this EU law. Apart from that, the law refers to traveling between countries, not traveling using the public transport of a member state.

For a personalized card you need a passport if you are not a Greek citizen. Otherwise you can issue an anonymous card.

If you have a personalized one, you can issue a new one at a ticket office, with the amount you had on your old one, using the 8-digit PIN, you entered when issuing the card for the first time.

If you have a non-personalized one, unfortunately, you lose the tickets or the stored value you had on it.

Hi. Thank you for all this information. Do you want us to use the card to go through every Metro and Electriko barrier even with the 30 day ticket on it? I know we will have to when the barriers start working. When will that be, do you know yet? Many thanks

Firstly, this site has nothing to do with the public transport company; It’s an independent informational site.

Yes, you have to touch-in and touch-out every time you go through a barrier, even if the gates are open and even if you have a 30-day ticket. You, also, have to touch-in every time you board a bus, trolley or tram. According to the Ministry of Transport, all gates will have closed at the end of the year. Until now, they have closed at the following stations: Aghios Dimitrios, Aghios Antonios (line 2), Eleonas, Doukissis Plakentias, Airport (line 3).

Hi! I wanna change my old tickets and i heard i can from omonia – does anyone know until when they are working/open to exchange tickets? Thanks!

Hello! You can exchange old tickets from 07:00 to 21:30, 7 days/week until the end of the year.

thank you so much for your reply!! 😀 super helpful!

Dear Dimitri. My wife has a personalised card and loaded 30 EUR Athens monthly travel card. How can I buy in advance the travel card for December 2017?

The travel cards are not for each month (for November, December etc.) but for 30 days starting at the first touch-in.

So, do you have a personalized card that’s not loaded or you don’t have one at all?

Demitri, she has a 30-day card loaded (we think it will expire around 4th December). Can I load 30 more days before the first 30 days run out?

Yes, you can load it now and it will become active at the first touch-in after the expiry of the current card.

Also, you can check when the current card expires at any gate or blue card reader or at a ticket issue machine.

Thank you, Dimitri. All the best.

Hello i have a question can i drive with the 3 days tourist tiket from Voula to Athens city? can i use this tiket or it is only for athen?

When a ticket writes that it’s for “Athens” it means that it can be used for all areas served by Athens busses, trolleys, trams and metro, excluding the Airport.

So, whether you take a bus or a tram from Voula, you are able to use it. Specifically, the 3-day ticket it can be used for unlimited travel in the Athens metropolitan area + 1 trip from and 1 to the Airport.

I currently have ten 90-minute journeys paid on the personalised card. Can I pay and add more 90-minute journeys before the last one is used?

Yes and they will be used after the first 11 (they are 11 journeys at the price of 10).

Many thanks ! I attach an image how to pay online. Not so easy to work out !

You’re welcome. I’ll notify the site administrator to add them in the website.

How to register and pay online. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/92f50e1a9f3d9b56b06cdecea7990a5ae96c35eb79fcfa556eba54d0684c80bc.jpg

If have still old tickets..what must I do with them?

Today I bought a Athena Ticket with eleven journeys for 14€ After the one trip – at the entrance the whole ticket was no more valod! Can anybody help me with an information? Thank you

You can exchange up to 10 old tickets at the Omonia station ticket office.

As your next question is regarded, what exactly happened?

Thank you for the first answer. Today I bought a 11 journey ticket for 14€ , made one trip to Omonia and when I wanted to get back after few hours It wasn t valid any more. Maybe I put it first on the wrong place.

Did you tried touching-in at an other gate? Maybe that specific gate was faulty.

Another thing that might happened is you took the ticket away from the reader too fast and the reader didn’t have time to “read” it.

Thank you Today it worked perfect Yesterday it told me that mz ticket is invalid

So just still one probleme The waiting time at Omonia for changing the old tickets is 30 -35 people I am thinking about driving with my old ticket and throw it away after the trip

You can’t use the old ticket anymore. The old ticket validation machines have been removed and using the old tickets is prohibited and in case of ticket inspection, you will be given a fine of 84€.

So, just wait a few days for the queue to become shorter and then go to the Omonia ticket office.

Θεωρητικά δεν θα υπάρχει πρόβλημα. Ρώτησε κάποιο υπάλληλο.

Where in the airport can we buy the Express Bus line tickets?

The ticket office is next to the express buses departures. That’s right outside the exit at the arrivals level (follow signs to buses)

I am wondering about the personalized card. I will soon arrive in Athens and stay for a little over 2 weeks. Thus, I find the 30-day ticket to be the best option in terms of the price, as I will be using public transport almost every day.

I see there are guides as to how to apply for the card, but is it possible to go to a ticket office with the relevant documentation and get a personalized card issued straight away?

Yes, of course it’s possible, but not at all ticket offices. The most central stations that issue personalized cards are Syntagma and Omonia.

However, for your convenience I suggest filling the form “Έντυπο προσωποποιημένης κάρτας” at http://www.athenacard .gr, print the QR code or make a screenshot of it, and bring it along with your passport at the ticket office. Since the above-mentioned website is in Greek only, I have translated the options, so that you know what to fill in each “box”. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/56620e0a5997dfc93e986279961d6b9fc5db93042f76dcc1a5406ef74289c9a6.png

Many thanks!

Great information but I am still confused. It seems as though there is no way to pay for a card & have a ticket ready for travel any time without having to recharge a card each time for 24 hrs.

I live in Athens & travel occasionally on the bus & Metro. Which card system do I need to buy that will allow me to travel whenever I want within the 90 minutes for unlimited days during the year? I want to have the card in my wallet ready at any time. Do I have to charge my card each time for one ticket or can I get numerous tickets during the year without a time limit? Thanks

What you have to do is get an anonymous or a personalized ATH.ENA Card from any ticket office and charge it with money up to 50€ (Pay as you go).

So, each time you want to travel, you will touch-in and the amount you have in the card, will be reduced by 1.40€.

You will continue to touch-in on the bus and both touch-in and touch-out on the metro, but it will charge you again, only 90 minutes after the first touch-in and so on.

Personalised cards are mainly useful for people who need 30-day tickets or are entitled to discounts.

Best to get an anonymous card (queues are only for personalised cards, go to a station with no queue) and get a set of 10+1 tickets for the price of 10.

You can also get the same 10+1 tickets on an athena ticket (same price) but the paper is not as sturdy.

The form is here: https://athenacard.gr/request.dev (Greek only) Will add it on the article.

With reference to my previous question above, please provide the link to top up / recharge online. Many thanks in advance.

The website is athenacard.gr (Greek only right now)

The recharge/top up webpage supports English as well. But you have to sign up first. So if you want to register we can guide you. (Very clever, good work guys :/ )

I wasn’t asked to type in an 8 digit pin when applying for my Ath.ena personalised card. Do I have to go back or can I set this myself online?

You’ll be asked to do it while issuing the card.

Thank you for your reply. I have the card and had to pay 30eur when they gave it to me but I wasn’t asked to enter an 8 digit pin

Does your card have your name and photo on?

Yes it does

Weird. They should have asked you to type a pin code.

The agent who gave me the card couldn’t speak English and nearly sent me away without issuing the card. I had to insist that she looks inside the envelope to see what documents I had. She issued the card, charged me 30.00 eur which I am assuming is a monthly metro pass and called for the next person. Please advise if I can get this pin online as I do not have time to stand in a long queue again as I already took a day off work to deal with this.

You need to contact the transport authority at [email protected]

The ticket agent messed up. There’s a decent chance that the pin is set to your birthdate, as that was what the ticket agent suggested when I was getting my card.

The problem here is that I don’t know if it’s possible to test a PIN or to reissue it if it’s lost. They might be able to fix it if you are still in possession of the card, but I’m not sure if even that is possible.

For the time being, assume the PIN is lost and that you’ll have trouble if you need to replace your card if lost. Keep photos of the card and & your receipts handy.

If the queues die down in 30 days time it might be best to simply scrap this card and get a new one with a PIN you know.

You can buy an Ath.ena ticket charged with airport ticket and then a 5-day ticket for moving around Athens.

I just looked the passport number format in UK passports. On the site, you will write only the 9 numbers not the “GBR” part.

Hi am a Foreigner in Greece and i dont have Amka, can i still register for the personalized card with my passport alone .

Thank you Dimitry

You’re welcome It’s “Dimitris” Dimitry or Dmitry is in Russian.

Sorry about that Dimitris

But make sure you have created and printed the special QR code, by filling the “Έντυπο προσωποποιημένης κάρτας” form at athenacard .gr. You have to bring this at the station’s ticket office, when going to issue the card.

I’m uploading a screenshot of the form, in which I translated the names of each “box” of the form, so you know what to write in each one: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ce2ff65d94ba60f8cba0c171bb8f799cdda9e1163571793f916bb1ba707a1ebf.png

Either you make an online application or not, you’ll still need to stand in line to get a personalized card. Unless you need a 30 day ticket, consider buying an anonymous card which doesn’t need any paperwork. If you do need the personalized card, if you wait for some days there will be less people standing in line.

HI I AM AT A LOSS A BIT..WILL THE NORMAL PAPER TICKET BE REMOVED FROM THE MARKET COMPLETELY? I WISH YOU COULD HELP ME HERE..SINCE I SEE A MASSIVE CROWD EVERYDAY AT THE METRO CASHIER, I KEEP BUYING PAPER TICKET. IS THERE A LIMIT DATE FOR THE PAPER TICKET?

Old-style paper tickets will stop being sold, but will be accepted and/or swapped for new ones for at least 2 weeks.

You’ll be able to get a single or at worst a 5-ride ticket from a machine regardless. There’s also a 10+1 ticket (11 rides for the cost of 10) that might make sense for you.

The photocard queues are for people who need monthly cards or are entitled to discounts.

Old paper tickets will be sold and used until this Monday, November 6th. But, as Nolyc T’nega writes below, you will be able to issue the new electronic single tickets (with 1.40€ cost) from the new white/blue ticket issue machines. The queues you see are for the personalised photocards. No need to stand in that queue. So, until Monday, you can still use the old paper tickets.

According to the transport authority it is important to make sure your ticket won’t expire before you reach your destination. If you are in a bus you can touch in a second time after the 90 mins are over so a second ticket will be used (provided you have one)

For the time being they can travel with the OAED paper. Soon they’ll have to issue cards.

Hi, I have 3 paper Athena tickets in front of me which I bought at ticket office two weeks ago. How can I control how much money is on them, how can I see how they are charged. If I scan them it will be delared as a ride immediately, but I just want to control them, I just want to know how they are already charged, how can I see this?

You can check them at the ticket issuing machine. Choose “card information” from the menu (translated that from Greek, I suppose that’s how it’s written in the English menu)

Yes, but I think only at the bus departures. (it’s a 3-4 minutes away from the train station)

Thank you for all of the information provided here. Do you know the hours during which Personalized Ath.ena cards can be purchased at the airport bus departures location? My wife and I are flying into Athens in early December and as we will be in the area for several months want to buy the long term product on arrival, but our flight does not arrive until 8:45PM.

I’m not sure if the ticket office will be open at 20:45. If it’s closed, you’ll take the metro or the bus to Athens (single tickets are sold from automatic machines at the metro station or inside the bus) and the next day you’ll go to one of these ticket offices and issue the personalized cards: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5311549c23031802fca2103c2416fe96a0bf772ba6e4504b53042e8a4ea2851d.png

The ticket office at the airport is open 24/7. Even so, there are also automatic ticket machines.

But that doesn’t mean that they will issue personalized cards at that time. The other ticket offices issue cards until 20:00 or 21:00.

That was my concern. I’m only out 18 Euros if they are closed and I have to buy the single use Airport transfer for two, so I won’t worry about it too much. Thank you for your response.

Question: On Wednesday, 1st. of November, rather than queing for a personalised plastic card, can I buy a 5-day ticket, then when that runs out, on the 5th of November, buy a personalised card when the queues have died down?

Of course. The cards will always be issued.

Hello, last time I heard something about it there was an issue because the ministry of education wouldn’t sign the agreement with OASA in order for IEK students to receive a half-priced ticket. I’m not sure whether this issue has now been resolved. I would suggest to contact your school first and then OASA and if you learn something new you can let us know.

I appreciate your reply sir. Right now , I am sure that they would require the students in iek to pay the regular price rather than half price . Because in our passports we are adults. I wrote a comment because I thought students in iek should have same treatment with the students in private ones.. Hopefully they will accept our certification letter.

Two questions. (1) Is there any sort of deadline for getting the new card/tickets? (2) When are the barriers expected to sart operating? Thanks!

There is no deadline, the cards and tickets will always be issued. The barriers are supposed to start operating from November.

As the previous monthly carf was costing 30 euro, is there anytjing comparable at the moment?

No, that’s not possible for obvious reasons. Every ticket or card is used by one person only. If you are 4 people, you have to issue 4 anonymous ATH.ENA Cards and then charge each one with a single ticket, which costs €1.40 (4×1.40=€5.60)

Hello, in the future there might be a way to buy just one 90-minute ticket (through the paper Ath.ena Ticket) but at this moment the cheapest solution is to buy a bundle of 5 90-minute tickets or a 24-hour ticket. Alternatively, you need to buy an Ath.ena Card (anonymous or not) but at this moment those are only sold from Metro stations. Unfortunately there is no other solution and this is a problem for locals as well.

The article above seems to contradict what your employees are telling their customers at ticket kiosks. We had an employee tell us today that each time we change our mode of transport, going in the same direction, we have to validate the new 90 min ticket. The total trip was less than 90 minutes are we are concerned that we are being overcharged. (A similar situation happened with MyKi, the Melbourne – Australia plastic card system and they had to change the way the cards were used as tens thousands of people were issued refunds by court order. It was understood that th tapping scanner up until the 90 min mark was only to be used to keep track of usage numbers by specific time and route, but the electronic system had problems and people were being overcharged each time they tapped their cards on and off.) How are the cards supposed to be used? Have your employees been properly trained?

Hello, this page doesn’t belong to the transport authority. It is an independent website. If you want to contact them you can email [email protected] This article is about the old style 90 minute paper tickets that will be phased out soon. Those were validated only once on the first journey. The new ATH.ENA TICKET needs to be scanned with every trip and there is no overcharging if 90 minutes haven’t passed.

I was just at one of the ticket offices in Kato Patisia, with my ID card to get the new electronic card for one month. I’ve seen my friends getting a monthly card without a problem the previous days with their foreign ID’s. And now I tried with my greek ID but I was told off in a very rude manner that I also need an “amcard” and I have no idea what that is and they weren’t able to tell me in english. I kind of figured it has to do something with health insurance so I showed them my german Insurance card and even my insurance card that I have here and still they wouldn’t do it. What exactly is the problem now ?

Sorry about that, I will update this page with more info in a few days. According to the transport authority you can issue the personalized card either with Greek ID + AMKA document (insurance number) OR with your passport. In that case no AMKA number is needed. If you need an official response please email [email protected] with the same question.

I use tfa app but it’s no longer working Is there a new one available?

No, there’s not a new one, since in the new electronic ticketing system, the fare gates, cannot read the app’s QR code, because they’re working RFID technology.

if you already have a monthly paper card for this month should you get the new plastic card? if so where can you get it and what do you need to bring?

You don’t need it this month but it was announced it will be needed from next month. You can buy it anytime though. If you have an AMKA number you need a document with it and your Greek ID. If you don’t have an AMKA number you only need your passport.

I would like to purchase train ticket from Kalambaka to Thessaloniki via the Trainose website ( https://tickets.trainose.gr ). The route/time I would like to book is not available for online purchase. What does this mean? How can still purchase the ticket for that time and day? Thanks.

Hello, it seems to be working here. There is a problem only with one specific time? In any case you could buy tickets at the station. These days there are always seats.

Israelis senior are includet for reduceb tickets

Yes, go with your passport at a metro station and they’ll tell you about the process.

Hello, i need to buy a metro ticket from the airport to thissio stop , can i choose the 90-min ticket? thanks

No, from the airport you need an airport ticket.

Can I buy tickets near of the cruise terminal?

There are tickets in the “Piraeus” metro (ISAP) station, which is near the Ε5 gate at the port.

Hi we are a group of 3 adults planning to reach Athens on 22 Sep evening and return 27 morning. What i understand is we can use a 5 days ticket( 3 person group) to use while in Athens and Airport return ticket. Can you please confirm thank you

You can find all the information you need here: athenstransport.com/english/

Do I really have to carry passport around with me or a picture of it is fine for reduced ticket price?

For age verification? You don’t need it to buy a ticket. You’ll need proof of your age in case of a ticket inspection. I assume a copy of it will be fine.

I am traveling to Greece next month, but will only be in the city 1 day, and i need to get to and from the airport. Is it recommend that i buy the return metro ticket, and does that get me to and from the airport for 1 fee? thanks in advance 🙂

Hello, i have a question. If i go from Elefsina to Athens with the A16 or 845 or 876, the 5-day tickets are available on those routes? i cant find anything similar on any website. please help me!

Yes, you can use it on those buses.

Thank you very much!!!

Hello, there is no “metro return ticket for two passengers”. Metro return tickets are for one passenger only. If you are two, you’ll need to buy two tickets.

Hello, please click on the links to view the timetables.

Im going to Athen this Friday, plane comming in late. And I will leave next Friday, early morning. Can I buy a return ticket for €18 for metro from/to the airport? Or will the last day to use it be Thursday?

Return tickets are only valid for 2 days.

Ok, so that changed? Because its said here over: “however, there are return Metro tickets for the airport (€18 – return must be within 7 days)”

Hi ,can you tell me please: Airport bus ,Route X97 has last station Dafni ,near Dafni metro point? Or last station is Eliniko metro point ? Thanks in advance!

During daytime it’s Elliniko Metro station but at night it goes up to Dafni Metro station.

If you mean take the metro or the bus from somewhere to Pireas then yes. More information here: https://www.athenstransport.com/english/

Is it absolute that a senior over 65 may get the metro/express bus price by showing a passport? One of the official websites refers to police ID only. Also, I read that the metro is free on Sundays up to 2 p.m. Is that still the case? Is that so also with the express buses? That would be great for me, as my flight leaves at noon. I saw that the M1 line to Piraeus from Syntagma is only €1.40 each way. Finally, in choosing whether to take Metro or Express bus from/to airport where does the express bus stop at Syntagma? Is there a terminal or just a street? I am trying to figure out which would be closer to get to my hotel a few blocks away, and whether a taxi would pick me up for a short journey. I know that the express bus is between exits 4 and 5 at the airport, but the Metro is a bit of a walk. Do they allow you to take your luggage trolleys all the way to the Metro, and are there elevators or escalators at the airport station and at Syntagma? Sorry for all the questions, and I appreciate your attentiveness.

1. Those over the age of 65 can use a reduced price ticket. The age is verified if needed by showing an appropriate document such as ID, driver’s license or passport.

2. Athens transport is not free on Sundays and it never has been.

3. Metro line 1 doesn’t directly go to Syntagma. It goes to Monastiraki station from where you can change to line 3 and get to Syntagma (with the same ticket).

4. At Syntagma the bus stops in the street. The Metro/train station at the airport is definitely not “a bit of a walk”. A moving walkway covers most of the distance. All metro stations in Athens have escalators and elevators, including the ones at airport and Syntagma. At Syntagma I suggest you use the elevator to get to the square.

Weird that some article wrote about the Sunday/free thing, but can’t find it anywhere else. No big deal. Re escalators/elevators and the Metro I am always a little concerned, because sometimes they don’t work. This has happened often in Paris and elsewhere, just when you have bags, etc. As I am arriving on an 8:25 pm flight from London and the x95 bus is between doors 4 and 5 of arrivals, can the commuting time difference (assuming I am not ready with bags until after 9 pm) for travel in the relatively late evening after rush hour to Syntagma be so much greater than the Metro and possibly, due to the bus’ proximity to the arrivals area, it might actually be more convenient? Thanks for the tip about Line 1. The other station is surely easy walking distance from my hotel, so it’s not necessary to take line 3 and change to line 1.

Finally, and I do very much appreciate your responding so quickly, re tix to the islands, are the ferry prices the same if you went to a local travel agent or kiosk near Syntagma as the online sites? For example, online it lists one-way to Hydra at €28 on most of the online URLs, even saw it at €38. However, it might be less expensive buying it locally. In any event, I was warned not to wait until getting to the port and also wonder if a Thursday, Sept 28 journey might be fully booked if I wait too long (most of the hotels already are, but not the ferries, from what I gather — and fortunately, I am planning a day trip). Would you recommend a 2nd day’s outing for Aegina or are the islands rather similar? I have 4 full days in Athens and wonder if 2 is enough to walk around the city, (have been there twice before, but a long time ago), with the other 2 for day trips. So many thanks again. You’re wonderful. Best, Michael

Can I purchase the 3-day tourist ticket on-line?

No, tickets are in physical form.

Thank you for your reply

Athens transport tickets are only used for trips on Athens public transport. You can’t use them outside Athens.

All your questions are very clearly answered on this page as well as https://www.athenstransport.com/english/

Please take a few minutes reading them and if there’s still a question let me know.

I will be arriving in Athens from Gythio Lakonias, how do I get to Monastiriaki please?

By taking the metro I suppose?

Thankyou for your reply, but it is not very helpful, as I don’t even know where my bus stops in Athens….

If you don’t know, I don’t know either, sorry. Ask when you get to your destination.

3-day tourist tickets cost the same for all. You can use it for all modes of Athens Transport, including 1 round trip to the airport, if you wish.

The paper the university gave you can substitute the University card.

The Metro Ticket for the Airport for two people, which costs 18euros is good for a roundtrip for one person or two people? For 18 euros, two people can go to and from airport or just one? Thank you!

Great site! Helped me be prepared before arrival!

When does the x80 line start running for the summer? We will be there the first week of June and it looks like our best option if it’s up and running by then.

Our trip to Athens will be four days. If we buy a tourist ticket on arrival and only use the metro for three days, will the return trip to the airport still be valid?

Is there anything in english about how late the metro runs?

I would like to know the location of the Airport Express Bus Station at Monastiraki

I see people already using the electronic tickets. Where can they be bought?

Alex P. Hi I’m going to Greece in September for more than 2 weeks and I am thinking in buying the monthly card all modes of transport including airport. Is it OK to buy a reduced card even I am US citizen.

Hi, I have a plane to catch on 17/05/1st at 8:00 am do you know if the metro is working early morning on the 1st of may ?

Is there a plan your journey web page for metro trains? I need to get from the airport to a hotel (Novotel Athènes hotel I need Michael voda)

Is it possible to take the bus to Sounion, Temple of Poseidon from Omonia bus station?

Do I need to buy a ticket for the suitcase (catching the metro from the airport)

Hello, does the 5-day ticket include the travel to Vouliagmeni Lake or is it to far away? In general, is there a map where I can see the farthest stations I can travel to with the 5- day ticket? Thank you

The return ticket for the airport is for 1 person. Same price with one-way ticket for 2 persons.

Hello, is 3-day tourist ticket valid for travel from Neratziotissa station to the airport in Athens by trains ?

Your question is already answered under “2. What kind of ticket do I need to travel from/to the Athens airport?”

Hello! This web site is perfect. But I can not find any answer my situation which is complicating. I am planning a trip to Athens on 19.03.2017-25.03.2017. I study at university and my birth date is 15.04.1992 so when I will be there, I will be still 24 years old. If I use reduced tickets, will be any problem when an inspector asks me ticket and ID? Thank you for your helping!

You question is already answered under “4. Who can use a Reduced Ticket or travel Free of Charge?”

Hello Thank you for those good information I still Wonder what is the best choice for me and my friend. There are four of us coming in april for 4 days arriving on the 24th evening at the airport , staying in athens until the 28th in the afternoon. My idea would be to buy a 3 day ticket for each one and buy an airport shuttle bus ticket for the last day . What do you think?

This is a really good website and helpful information. I have some questions: I recently moved to Athens and I take the bus everyday to work back and forward, until I can buy a monthly card, I have been buying 90min tickets twice a day. Do you recommend anything better? Also, I have notice that almost every person that take the bus doesn’t pay or validate a ticket? Feels like I’m the only one validating my ticket every day, is this for something that Greek citizens can do, ride for free? thanks in advance!

Hello and thanks! Those you see not validating a ticket either a) have a monthly card, b) have already validated their ticket (for example on another bus or metro), c) are allowed to travel for free (for example, the unemployed) or d) are fare dodgers. There is a large number of all of the above but things will get clearer once the new ticketing systems goes in use in the next months.

Instead of using 90 min tickets every day (I guess 2 per day), you can buy a 5-day ticket (costs 9 euros).

Hello, does the 3 day tourist ticket include unlimited travel on the Athens sightseeing bus in 2017 or has that now been discontinued? I can’t seem to find information on this anywhere.

Hello, the sightseeing line has been discontinued. There are only private sightseeing bus lines right now.

Coming to Athens on a cruise ship and departing via the airport. Have not seen any specific comments similar. We will want to get to city center from the port, then 2 days later go from city center to the airport. Will be 2 adults and 1 child. Believe the tourist pass would be best for this. Is that correct and can we purchase this pass when we get off the ship? Thank you,

Why is a 3 day ticket 22 Euros and a 5 day ticket only 9 Euros ???

The 3-day ticket is a tourist ticket which includes a round trip to the airport. You can’t use the 5-day ticket for airport transfers.

I think you should also have mentioned the TfA Tickets application for Mobile phones (Android and Apple) i think they are very convenient for Tourists because with this app they can choose their best suited ticket – it is written also in English in explaining each ticket type.

Hello, the ticket app will most probably not be available in a few months time.

I Know that, Unfortunately, because it was a very helpful app esp. for foreigners visiting Greece. The sad thing in my opinion was that it was never properly advertised to the public, otherwise i think it would have been very useful (It still is…).

This is true. Our yearly survey has shown that familiarity with the app is particularly low.

Hi, I am intrested in validation of tourist ticket, if I buy the ticket friday afternoon at the airport and i have to leave monday with the first metro is it valid return ticket to the airport or is expired ? Thank you

The ticket is valid for 3 full days. (3×24 hours). You can do your math 😉

it says disabled people can use metro fror free, does this apply to tourists who are disabled ?

Hello, it only applies to residents of Athens who have a special card.

I am visiting Athens for a week, I have training in airport premises for a week and I would like to stay in down town. What option would be better for me so that I can commute airport every day from town.

hello, i would like to ask if the Return Metro ticket for the airport (for 2 journeys in under 7 days) is valid in any metro station within the city? or does it specify such? thank you 🙂

Cards for all modes excluding airport, are they valid for transportation for exemple from Monastiraki to Ethniki Aminas? Thanks.

Cards for a month and for all modes excluding airport, can we use it for metro line for exemple from Monasteraki to Ethniki Amynas? thx

Yes, all metro stations except airport.

Good morning! What does “for all modes” mean? Does it mean for all kinds of means of transport?

Thanks for your prompt answer. I would also like to know if the ticket fare is 50% reduced for children aged 7-12.

One of the best and useful sites I have seen. Thank you and Mmerry Christmas!

Aww and that’s one of the kindest comments 🙂 Merry Christmas to you as well!

Hello! I intend to visit Athens for 10 days in April 2017 and I`d like to know if transfers from Airport (by Metro or by bus) to the city center, has stations at Sintagma Square. My accomodation is in Pagrati neighborhood, near Kalimarmaro Staduim. Thank You!

Please read https://www.athenstransport.com/english/ You can get to Syntagma by metro or by bus.

Hello, I will be in Athens during Christmas (24-27 December). Is public transport going to be available during these days?

Hello, Athens transport is running on limited (Sunday) service during holidays (December 25th and 26th). No specific announcements yet for this year. There will be a post when we learn more.

Hello, can i use student ISIC card from Czech university to have reduced ticket? thank you

Hello, there’s an answer for that above. You can use a reduced ticket up to the age of 24.

If I buy a Metro airport ticket and validate it in the airport, do I have to validate it again, if I leave metro at the Kantza station and visit zoo and then during the same day go back to the metro again at Kantza towards Monastiraki station?

The metro ticket for the airport is valid for 90 minutes after the first validation. Therefore, I think you’ll need to buy an extra ticket from Koropi to Athens (1.40 euros).

Hi, It’s really a great site! I’d like to ask if you buy the group metro tickets for 3 people, can you use it for yourself for 3 trips from/to airport within 7 days? I found from internet that there was X92 bus from kifisia to Athens aiport, is it still operating? My question can we use other bus (e.g 410/500) before connecting to X92 with the same ticket?

Hello, and thank you. Tickets to the airport for 3 persons are valid for 1 travel when 3 persons travel together. X92 route doesn’t exist anymore. Bus tickets for the airport are not valid for transfer to other bus/metro lines.

Hi, great info! Wanted to ask, as we have seen in some cities – is the funicular included in the tourist card, or separately paid? Could you give us idea of price? Thank you

Hello! If you mean the Lycabettus finicular, it’s run by a private company so it’s not included in the public transport tickets and cards. Last time I used it (3 years ago) the ticket cost 7 euros (round trip).

Hi, I have a question as I’m a bit lost. We are coming to Athens for 4 days – coming late in the evening on 08.12 and leaving in the morning of 11.12 – can you please tell me what ticket should we buy if we want to take metro from the airport to the city and then we’ll have to take one more ride to get in the area of Museum of Acropolis. We will also take some buses during our stay and again we’ll take metro to the airport. Will the ticket of €22 be enough? If there’s 2 of us can we buy one ticket?

Hello, We are arriving at the airport, then heading to a hotel near Syntagma Square…then 3 days later need to head to the Piraeus Port to get on our cruise ship. Then we will be back in athens 12 days later and need to go from airport to hotel…then back again. Would the 3 day tourist be best for the first part of our journey, and then just a regular metro or transit pass at the end?

Makes sense to me. Please read “I’m flying to Athens for a few days. Any advice on which ticket I should use?” as well.

I just realized it sounds confusing because it’s translated from Greek where it’s more clear. It means those aged 25 are not included. Just those under that.

Thanks. But in one earlier comments you said “While you’re 25 you can buy the reduced ticket.” So now I am really confused. 🙂

That comment was about an erasmus student at a Greek university. Are you an erasmus student at a Greek university?

Can I buy reduced tickets also at the ticket-machines?

Hi and thank you! 1. 3-day tourist tickets include those two trips from/to the airport as well as unlimited use of transport within Athens during those 3 days. 2. You are correct. Ages younger than 7 travel for free, which makes many children in Athens stay unofficially 6 y.o. for a couple of years or so 😉

Will the Metro ticket sales accept cash Euros at the Airport? U.S. credit cards chips/passwords sometimes do not work. Thanks. Great site.

Hello and thanks. Cash is the default way of payment everywhere in Greece. You’ll never face a problem when paying cash, including at ticket booths.

Hello, Does X97 bus route from Airport go to the Agios Dimitrios station? We’re arriving late in the evening and want to get there, but we found different information about this direction: that it goes only to Elliniko station. What’s the right info? Thanks.

Hello, bus X97 terminates at Elliniko station which is now the terminal station of Metro line 2. If you arrive before midnight you can simply take the metro and go to Agios Dimitrios (4 stations away). If you arrive after midnight line X97 gets extended to Dafni between 00:00-05:00 so you can get off at Aghios Dimitrios which is along the way.

Hi, I’m a student from Russia.I was wondering if the reduced tickets also apply for me if I am older than 25 but have The ISIC card – International Student Identity Card

Hello, I’m not aware of any offer especially for holders of ISIC cards. I would contact ISIC to ask if I were you. If you show the card at a ticket booth and ask for a reduced ticket I don’t think they’ll ask about your age but this doesn’t mean it’s 100% safe to do so.

If I have a 5 days Ticket to drive to Koropi, can I take the reduced Ticket from Koropi to the Airport for the last station?

Good informations, I’ll go to athens in January 2017, and want to use the transport to visit the beach, and go to the Lake, Thanks.

Hello! You can use google maps to get transport information from/to any location. If you have a specific question, let me know.

Hi,does the 5 day ticket cover to Piraeus from the let’s say Monastiraki please?

You can use it to travel from/to all Athens metro stations except Airport.

Hi, which is the latest time of day that a bus or metro goes to the airport?

Hello, you can find updated information on this page https://www.athenstransport.com/english/ under ‘From the airport to downtown Athens’ section.

Let me know if you have any questions not answered there.

Congratulations for a very informative site! Explicit, clear and useful! Thank you for all the information and keep up the good work

Thanks for your words!

Hello 3-day tourist ticket is available for 3 calendar days or 92 hours? Because I will arrive at 10 July and I will depart at 14 July, but in Athens I will be only 90 hours

The 3-day tourist ticket is valid for 3 days from the time of validation, which is 72 hours.

Hi! Do the 3 day tourist tickets include trips to the nearest beach?

Yes, the nearest beaches can be accessed by bus or tram.

Thank you for the quick response! Is Piraeus the nearest beach?

Piraeus is a port, not the place to swim. Check on Google Maps from https://www.google.gr/maps/place/%CE%A6%CE%9B%CE%9F%CE%99%CE%A3%CE%92%CE%9F%CE%A3,+Paleo+Faliro+175+61/@37.9233921,23.6908006,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x14a1bc1f45baeda3:0x2934cd1694992799!8m2!3d37.9233921!4d23.6929893 and further south.

Hi! thanks for the info! it’s really useful. I’m going to Athens from the 11th july to the 8th august and I’m planning to take transport everyday to the Piraeus, so could I take a monthly ticket at least for july? any other suggestion to make it cheaper?? thank you!

Hi there! Monthly cards are generally the cheapest option. However, monthly cards for July will be sold until July 10th. After that they will be sold for 5 more days downtown at Akadimias bus station and (if I’m not mistaken) Syntagma metro station. Even if you choose to buy a monthly card for July you won’t be able to use it for your trip from the airport (since you can only buy it downtown on July 11th) and you won’t be able to use it after July 31st. Still, if you use public transport every single day , buying a monthly card (30 euros) might still be cheaper than buying 5-day tickets (9 euros for 5 days). Read the section about monthly cards and let me know if you have further questions.

Can you get a reduced ticket from a ticket machine

Can I get a reduced ticket from a ticket machine

Hello, the all mods ticket for five days includes as well the proastiakos suburban rail athens-korinthos?

No, Korinthos is outside the urban section.

We are two persons booking a 10 day trip to Athens santorini and mykonos, please advise which is the most convenient ticket to buy for use of bus and Tran withing the countries and from and to the airport… many thanks

Hello, that depends on a few things. Please read part 3 “I’m flying to Athens for a few days. Any advice on which ticket I should use?” and if you have any specific questions not covered above, please let me know. Have a good time!

Hiya so im in a huge pickle where ive been screwed over by a travel company and would like to know if its possible and prices on how mcuh it would be to get from Athens airport to the Mitsis Galini Wellness & Spa not going till June but could really use some help.

First of all I would suggest calling the resort directly. They should be able to give you all information. Google says it’s at Kamena Vourla which would mean that the easier way to get there is to take a long distance bus from Athens. Buses depart from the Kifissos bus station. To get there from the airport you take bus X93. The resort should be able to give you more information. Let me know if I can help further.

Hi we (2 persons) will be arriving at Athens Airport and will be in Athens for 5 days please advise what kind of tikets are the best for to buy.

Hello, to answer your question I just added a new section above. Please check “I’m flying to Athens for a few days. Any advice on which ticket I should use?” and let me know if you have any extra questions. Hope you have a good time in Athens.

I’m travelling to Athens and need to get from the airport to Hotel Melia, I understnad I can do this by using the metro from the airport and specifically the line 3 to reach the city center Sintagma station and then change to line 2 to Omonoia, do I just need to purchase the Integrated Ticket €1.90 each way? Or have I misunderstood the above? Many Thanks

Please check “What kind of ticket do I need to travel from/to the Athens airport?” to see your choices.

There are no tickets costing €1.90, Ι don’t know where you found that price.

Apologies, I meant €1.40 as detailed below:

Intergrated ticket for all modes (Valid for 90 mins) € 1.40 € 0.60

Ok, intergrated tickets are not valid for travel from to/the airport. Check above to see which tickets you can use.

Hi, please check the new section “3. I’m flying to Athens for a few days. Any advice on which ticket I should use?” and if you have any questions let me know.

Hello! We will be in Athens from 18/3 to 22/3 for the EXPOFOOD, staying in the City Centre. Is there a card that can be purchased to cover those 5 days Airport/City Centre/Airport without fuss? Thanks

Hi, the 5-day ticket doesn’t cover travels to/from the airport. You will need to buy the return metro tickets to the airport (or bus tickets to the airport) extra.

does the metro from the airport to the center of Ahtenes works on the 1st may ?

It’s still very early to know how transport will be affected on May 1st. You’ll need to check a few days before.

Hello, could you tell me the last metro that i could take from the airport to Monastriki? My fly is arriving on friday at 11.50. Thanks!

Hi, need clarification on the tourist ticket. Does the return journey to the airport need to be completed within 3 / 7 days?

It has to be completed within 3 days.

We are going to athens in May, but our flight will be out of normal hours. We will be landing at 23:30 and a week later, we will be leaving at 06:00 . So I have to book a pick up & drop off service. Do you know which one is the cheapest company to book. We will be in the Athens for 7 nights and planning to buy a weekly ticket. We know we can’t use the ticket to /from Airport, but can we use the ticket for Metro/bus/tram/Suburban railway? How much does it cost?Thank you for this very helpful infos.

Hi, I would like to get some advice from you. We will arrive to Athens Airport at 22:45 and stay 3 days. If I plan to travel from/to the airport with metro is the 3-day tourist ticket could be a good idea? Better suggestion!? Can I buy 3-day tourist ticket at 23:00 when I will arrive to airport? Thank you.

I have been ROBBED on the metro in Athens. Watch out, Athens is a very dangerous city for tourists! Never again in Athens!

According to my experience in the tourism industry, Athens isn’t more dangerous than any other European capital city. Common sense is needed when traveling in public transport and generally when being in crowded places. This is a reason you will often hear “mind your personal belongings” announcements in the metro. People who can’t mind their own pockets or bags are better off if they stay at home.

Hello, one information please. If I purchase A 3-day tourist ticket = 20 euro, does it mean: airport to the city centre and all around unlimited trips, during three days?

Hi there do i really need to bring a passport photo in order to purchase a monthly ticket or just show my passport. Thanks George

I have 2 questions: 1- do the metro operate on new year’s eve? 2- If I need to go to Koropi station, should I buy the Airport ticket?

The metro operates on New Year’s Eve, usually with a Sunday schedule. Last trains departures though are around 23:00.

Koropi is within the urban section so you need the normal ticket.

Hello, I would like to ask: “Return Metro ticket for the airport (for 2 journeys in under 7 days)” – If I arrive to the Athens airport at Wednesday at 14:00, use Metro and then make the Metro journey back to the airport next Wednesday at 8:00, is it OK? Is it simply counted as less than 168 hours? Or does it count whole days, so the last day I could go back would be Tuesday in this case? Thank you!

The ticket for Saronida E22 ,how much does it cost? from 1/09/2014 -1,60 or less, is it covered within the new card of 30 euros? Thank you!

You can go up to Saronida with the €1.20 ticket and €30 card.

If you use the metro to move from the airport to Athens and back then the tourist ticket is a good choice. If you use a bus it depends on how much you’re going to use public transport while you’re in Athens

Hello! I am 25 years old right now and I´m student in Prague and I will be on erasmus in Athens in Panteion uni, I have to pay full price? Thanks a lot!

While you’re 25 you can buy the reduced ticket. Ask more details about it at Panteion. I’m not sure whether Erasmus students can issue a Greek “student pass” for transport or you’ll have to use your own country’s university pass. Also consider issuing a reduced price monthly card. Costs 15 euros and you can use it around Athens for a whole month. (Except for journeys to/from the airport). I hope you enjoy your stay here!

Hello I need to travel with my mobility scooter from/to airport and the city, do I need to buy ticket or its free? I lived in Athens before and I had a card that confirmed my disability but it has expired so I don’t know the rules now. thaks

Hello, as a disabled person you are supposed to be allowed to travel for free. Carry with you some paper that proves your disability and ask at the ticket counter. The regulations say you need to have a special card for that but tourists and foreigners obviously don’t. I hope common sense will prevail and they’ll let you travel for free.

Thanks for the clear info.

Where does the Express bus go? Where can I find out the route it takes, please?

If you click at the links in the ’24-hours express buses’ section you can see the timetable and map of each line.

i can only repeat: thanks for this helpful site. good work and stay tuned! 🙂

Hi! Is it possible to get ticket discount if I am non EU student and hold ISIC card? Thank you!

Hello! Is it possible to get ticket discount if I am non EU student and hold ISIC card? Thank you!

Hi, there is no condition that you have to be an EU student to get the discount. I copy “University students up to the age of 25 with a Student Card – University ID card (regardless of nationality)”

Hello, for how long the airpor return ticket is valid?? for exemple I arrive in the airport on a saturday and I leave on the airport on a thursday, can I buy a airport/return ticket on saturday and keep it with me to return on thursday? Many tks!!

Hello, the return airport ticket is valid for 48 hours, I’m adding this info.

Hello! Is it possible to use monthly card for transportation to suburbans? I will stay 1 month in Xylokastro and wondering if I can use monthly card to go to Athens and come back. Thank you in advance.

Hello, since Kiato is outside the urban section of the suburban railway, you’ll need a special card by TRAINOSE. You can ask more info about it and buy it from any suburban railway station.

Hi, would like to get some advice from you, if it is wise to get the 3day tourist ticket if we are only staying in athens for 2days. We need to travel from airport to Piraeus on the day we arrive at about 1pm on the 6th of June, then travel around the area for the rest of the day on 6th and 7th of June. Leave for airport on the 8th to arrive by 1pm. Do you think it is wise to pay 20euros for just the use of two days? Is there tickets available only per trip instead of 1.40euros for 90mins. Havent been to Athens before, not exactly sure if we need to hit the railway/buses everywhere we go or it is walking distance to everywhere. Appreciate your help in advance!

Hello, all the available tickets are the ones listed above. The historic center of Athens (roughly the area between Syntagma – Monastiraki – Acropolis) is walkable if 15-20 minute-long walks aren’t an issue. If you’re planning to go downtown from the airport with the metro, I think the tourist ticket could be a good idea as you’ll be able to get in the metro or into any bus as many times as you want without worrying about paying again. If you plan to travel from/to the airport with an express bus, and use the metro only if it’s necessary though, it should cost you less than the price of the tourist ticket. I hope you enjoy your time here!

There are four adults in my group, arriving at the Athens airport on May 29th. We would like to take metro to Syntagma. Is there a group ticket for more than 3 persons?

No, I’m afraid there are no other group tickets.

We will arrive to Athens on the 24th May at 22.30 and leave Sun 25th May . The one day ticket is it valid 24 hours from the moment of using or calendaristic day? For example if arrive at 22 in the evening does it make any sense to buy it? The transport from the airport to the city and from Piraeus to the airport it is included in the 1 day metro ticket? Or I have to buy a separate ticket? (I need it for line 1+ line 3)

Answers to both questions are already replied in the article. Daily tickets are valid for 24 hours after their first validation. They are not valid for transfers to the airport. You will need a metro ticket for the airport. It’s valid for 90 minutes and transfer with all other modes (buses etc.)

May I ask if it is possible to buy advance tickets? (1 day before) We plan to buy the 14 Euro for 2 pax Metro Airport ticket-1 way and 2 pcs. of 4 Euro Reduced Metro Airport ticket 1- way= total of 22 Euros. Our kids are 12 and 14, do we need to show original passports or are copies enough? Or maybe we can show our kids school ids even if non-Eu schools? (We are from Asia). Thank you. This website is truly very helpful.

Thank you for your words. You can buy any ticket regardless of when you’re going to use it. What matters is that you validate it at the beginning of your journey. When issuing a ticket, you won’t need to show a passport. Just ask for the tickets you want or use the automatic machine. Passports might be needed in case of ticket inspection but I believe just the copies will be fine. I hope you enjoy your stay!

Please advise, we are a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 kids (12-18), we arrive in July on a cruise ship for the day. We consider public transport from harbour to the main attractions (Akropolis; plaka, zeus…) above a min van taxi due to the cost.

There are no 7-day tourist tickets but simple 7-day tickets (14 euros, not good for the airport), and 7-day airport tickets (50 euros, includes unlimited transfers to the airport).

hi, does the integrated ticket for all modes work from/to airport?

No, you need an airport ticket.

Thanks for the great info. Very helpful.

I will be in Athens airport next Sunday and then go to Piraeus. Is it true that X96 ticket at 5€ is valid for 24 hours on all the network of busus and metro?

Bus tickets for the airport are only valid for 1 travel on an airport line bus, and nothing more than that. Metro tickets to the airport are valid for 90 minutes of travel on metro/buses/tram excluding bus lines to the airport and Saronida bus line.

Can you please tell me where simple weekly ticket can be bought;

At all locations but most probably many kiosks (periptera) and newstands won’t carry them as they are not on very high demand.

Hi, I was planning a trip to Athens from 12th of Feb till the 15th. Is the 3day ticket valid for 72h or 3days? Because if I arrive and use my ticket on the 12th at 19:00 and use it on the 15th for the last time at 11:00, I would be within 72h. But not 3days… Having to buy a 7day ticket to make up for those 8h seems a bit excessive.

All tickets are valid for the time they are valid beginning at the moment of validation. 3 days = 72 hours of course.

Hi, we are coming to Athens in November and will look at 3 day travel cards. Our daughter will be 6 so does she require a card for travel or is it free travel for 5 years and under, not 6 and under?

Hi, I have nothing more to add to “children under the age of 6 […] can travel free of charge” other than no one would ever ask identification for a 5(ish)-year old child during a ticket inspection.

Edit: Law says that children under the age of 6 don’t pay ticket and children between 7-12 years old pay a reduced ticket. Law forgot to say whether 6 year old kids should pay ticket or not. Therefore, 6-year olds don’t pay for a ticket.

Hi I will be arriving at Athens Airport and will be in Athens for 2 days only. I understand that I need to take the X95 express bus. Please confirm the discounted price is €2.5? And also, I would like to reconfirm if the daily ticket covers metro, trams, busses and trains?

Thanks so much!

I’m a student from Serbia (studying in my country).I was wondering if the reduced tickets also apply for me with my index from college or no?

It should be ok. Show your Student Card at the ticket counter to confirm it.

Thanks so much. The over-pricing was what I had in mind when raising the question. I now think a tourist ticket is a bad idea.

Hi. May I know the difference between a weekly ticket and a 7 day tourist ticket?

The main difference is that the simple weekly ticket is not valid for any transfer from/to the airport while the tourist ticket is valid for one transfer from and one transfer to the airport by metro or bus.

However, take into consideration that tourist tickets are VERY overpriced. A simple weekly ticket plus 2 bus tickets for the airport cost 14 + 5 + 5 = €24 whereas the tourist 7-day ticket costs €50. Similarly, a simple weekly ticket plus a return metro ticket for the airport cost 14 + 14 = €28.

There are no 7-day tourist tickets anymore.

Hi Are the 7 day tourist tckets half price for children under 18? John

It is stated clearly that there are NO reduced daily, 7-day, and tourist tickets.

Great information on this site! Very helpfull. I only have one question; does the reduced ticket also apply for foreign students from foreign universities?

Thank you. Yes, up to the age of 25, with a Student ID.

Athens transport I just came to buy reduced ticket with my ID and my university ID but could not on the machines and the worker working at the ticket issue refused to give me reduced card because, I quote “there says no university on my card” (it says “sveučilište” which is Croatian word for university and on the back of the card with the microchip it says it is an officcial document of students in Republic of Croatia. Any help with the situation?

Great information on this site! I will be arriving at around 2 AM at Athens airport. Will I be able to purchase the tourist ticket at that time? Thanks.

Thank you! The ticket office for express buses (Arrivals area) is open 24 hours a day. So I believe you will find tourist tickets there.

can I use the monthly ticket to go from airport to nea smirny, my kids are 1- less than 12 & 2- less than 8 years old, do they need full or reduced ticket. thanks

You can use a monthly card for transfer to and from the airport ONLY with an express bus, not the metro or the suburban railway. (Monthly card is good for all Athens metro stations except the airport one).

Children over the age of 7 need a reduced ticket.

Hi, can you explain me how it is easier (or cheaper) to reach Larissa station from the earport? Thanks.

Hello, the cheapest way is to get either X95 or X97 bus lines up to a central Metro station and from there, use the metro to get to Larissis station. More info here: https://www.athenstransport.com/english/

After visiting OASA and not finding the info I needed, I came here because I knew you would have what I needed. 🙂

Also wanted to add that Piraeus is missing a letter, and don’t forget to add the ‘Buy 10, get one free’ ticket paketos that have been offered since January 1.

Thanks Kat! It seems I always misspell ‘Piraeus’, why isn’t it called ‘Pireas’ anyway?

This page needs rewriting (to add more info and explain better) and I’m going to do it one of these days 😉

Please inform me if the reduced ticket for senior passengers apllies to tourists also. Thank you

Yes, it applies to everyone.

does that include airport transfers for over 65s

Very useful. Thanks. The only thing is that there is no date of this article. Hopefully this is not an old information.

Thanks for the comment! All information is valid at the moment. I’m going to update my English pages very soon (mainly add more info or explain better) and I’ll add a date too 🙂

A really helpful site. Thanks to whoever compiled it.

You are welcome! Thank you for visiting.

Do you accept German ID for a blind Person?

I contacted Athens Urban Transport Organization a few weeks ago and it was concluded that free travel for disabled persons is available only for permanent citizens of Attica region, with a pass issued by Attica periphery. I changed the article to reflect this.

do the student prices for under the age of 25 also include universities like new york college and deree? or is it just for public universities?

For Ι.Ε.Κ. students, up to the age of 22, with a special pass. You need to contact your school for the process.

How To Book A Train Ticket In Greece In 2024

Visitors are sometimes puzzled when booking a train ticket in Greece. Here is how to book a train ticket on the Hellenic Train website, and a few tips that will get you the best price possible.

Book tickets for the trains in Greece

Trains in Greece

The train network in Greece connects several cities. Some of the most important ones are Athens, Thessaloniki , Kalambaka near the Meteora monasteries , Corinth, Larissa, Volos and Trikala.

Trains in Greece

The train is a great way to travel around Greece. It is efficient, convenient and punctual. Don’t let its outside appearance put you off – the trains are clean and comfortable, and have everything you need.

There are three ways to book your train ticket in Greece: on your laptop, through the HELLENIC TRAIN mobile phone app, and in person. Let’s check each of them in detail.

By the way, if, like many visitors, you are looking to visit Meteora, you can book an organized tour from Athens to Meteora . Your tour provider will arrange all transportation for you, not only from Athens to Kalambaka, but also around the majestic monasteries.

Another option is to hire a car and drive in Greece ! Check out this great platform, DiscoverCars , where you can easily book a vehicle for the duration of your stay.

Note: As of January 2024, the train service in certain areas of Greece, for example Kalambaka – Meteora, is partially replaced by buses. Check out the official website for more information.

Book your Greek train ticket online

If you’ve been to Greece before, you may remember that the train company used to be called TRAINOSE . In summer 2022, the name was changed to HELLENIC TRAIN.

You can easily book your Hellenic Train tickets online. It will only take you a few minutes to book your ticket.

Go to the official HELLENIC TRAIN website , and you will immediately see the booking options. You will need to select your departure and arrival stations, whether you want a one-way or a return ticket, and your travel dates.

Hellenic Train website

At the next step, you will be able to see all available itineraries for your chosen dates. You will need to select which one you want, for each leg of your trip.

Depending on your itinerary, you may see two types of services: ICE and IC. The services marked as ICE are slightly faster, as they only stop at Larissa and Thessaloniki. They are more expensive than those marked as IC, but they are a lot more modern, and, in my experience, can be less busy. Here’s a guide on using the train from Athens to Thessaloniki .

After you’ve chosen your preferred service, you will need to select your class and seats. Class A offers a little more legroom, but is more expensive. Most people will be happy with Class B, which looks like this on the IC services.

Note that the default option that comes up is Class A – so if you prefer to travel in Class B, make sure you select the right wagon.

Inside the train in Greece

Once you’ve selected your seat(s), you will be asked to fill in the names of passenger(s) and will proceed to payment. You can pay by debit / credit card or PayPal.

Your tickets will be emailed to you in a PDF document. You can either print them out, or save them on your phone / tablet / other electronic device.

Note that various discounts are available – more on that later on.

Book your train ticket in Greece on your mobile

I usually book my Greece railways tickets on the HELLENIC TRAIN app. You can download it for both Android (Google Play) and iOS (App Store). There used to be an extra discount for people booking their tickets on the app, but not anymore 🙁

Download the Hellenic Train app on your mobile

Once you have downloaded the app, you will need to choose a PIN and password. Make sure you take a note of them as they won’t autosave.

You can then check the timetables and buy your ticket through the “issue ticket” menu. Select the departure and arrival stations, choose the time when you want to travel and select your class and seats. You can then proceed to payment.

The tickets will be instantly available on the app, and will also be emailed to you as a PDF document.

If you are using the HELLENIC TRAIN app, here is what you need to pay attention to

Note that the app doesn’t work when there is no internet coverage or if you have no data. Also, make sure you have the PIN or password handy before you travel, as you won’t be able to retrieve your tickets otherwise.

To be on the safe side, you can always print your tickets from the PDF document and show them to the ticket inspector. Make sure the QR code has been printed properly. Or you can just save the PDF document on any electronic device.

Book your train ticket in person at the train station

If you are a spontaneous traveller, you can always book your ticket directly at the train station. Just make sure you allow for enough time before the train departs, as there may be queues.

Book your tickets at Thessaloniki train station Greece

You will receive a paper ticket, that you can show to the inspector on the train. If you buy a return ticket, make sure you hold on to the ticket for the second leg of your trip, as you won’t be able to reissue it if it’s lost.

Note that Friday and Sunday evenings are popular times to travel, so don’t expect to find a last-minute seat. Generally speaking, it’s best to buy your Hellenic Train tickets in advance.

Ticket prices and discounts on the trains in Greece

While many travellers will pay a full price ticket, there are several ways to get discounts for the trains in Greece.

Children, students, young people under 24 years old and people over 65 years old are entitled to various discounts. Children under 4 years old travel for free.

Athens Greece train station

Disabled travellers are also entitled to a discount. You can travel on the train as a wheelchair user, but you will need to inform the train company in advance.

If you book a return trip on any IC services you get a 20% discount, and if you book early you get an additional discount. The policy for ICE services tends to change now and then, so check before you travel.

You can have a look at all available discounts and offers here .

How far in advance can I book a train ticket on TrainOSE?

I’m trying to book tickets from Athens to Kalambaka for the 16th May 2022, and as of the 26th of April there still aren’t any tickets available on the website yet.

Do tickets usually become available only 2 weeks in advance? Thank you

Hi! Yes, try again in a few days and you should be fine! Enjoy your time – Have a look at this article about Meteora !

There still aren’t any tickets from Athens to Kalambaka on 16th May; and thats 9 days away.

I am searching correctly?

Yes, at the moment the system only shows up to a week ahead for some reason… It happens sometimes! So you can try again in a couple of days!

thanks for the reassurance! was getting worried that I was making a mistake in my search!

Hello, I tried to book tickets from Athens to Kalambaka through the TrainOSE app but the price is the same as in the website. The app 10% discount is no longer valid? Thank you!

I get the discount on my app, I think you have to register a new account to get it. Btw, there was a website issue in the past few days, so I hope you’ve made it!

Hi . Can You Please Tell Me How Can i Sign Up In Trainose Because There Is No Sign Up Option In Website Or The App . I Was Wondering If I Can Buy Train Ticket Without The Sign Up.

Yes you can buy the tickets without the signup. If you sign up and get them through the app, you get a 10% discount.

Thank You Very Much. And There’s Another Thing How Can i Use The Ticket. Should I Print It Or Keep It In My Phone. Do They Verify The Ticket Before Boarding The Train At The Station Or In The Train. My Question Is Should I Go Direct To The Station Master And Show The Ticket Or Should I Board The Train And When Someone Come Asking For Ticket Then I Can show it In The Train..? Waiting For Your Answer.

I keep it on my phone and use the app. However, if you have no data, it will not show up… so it’s best to either print it or download a pdf version on your phone. Depending on the station you are departing from, you might need to show it before you board the train (this is what happens in Athens), or while on the train.

Okay Thank You Very Much You’re Very Helpful. One Last Question. Can You Please Tell Me İs There Any Daily Train From Soufli To port of alexandroupoli And port of alexandroupoli To Thessaloniki. Can You Please Tell me Timing. On Google And On Trainose Timing Are Different.

As far as I know, some of these rail services have been replaced by buses. Trainose.gr is always your best source, as this is also where you can get the tickets… However, for those itineraries, you can always get your ticket last minute at the station. Hope this helps!

How to sign up?

Thank You For Your Help . Is There A Train That Goes To Thessaloniki From Alexandroupolis. Or Not . I’ve Been Trying On The App And The Website But I Found Nothing?

I believe this service has been discontinued. You can take a KTEL bus instead though!

I have gone to the Trainose website and I clearly see “member registration.” Everytime I click on it I get sent to the purchasing site and they want me to login. And, of course, that doesn’t work because I am not registered. Any idea what I’m missing? Thank you.

Sorry you are having this experience. I know they were updating the website with new train timetables, so I’m hoping it’s working again. However, as far as I know, you don’t need to be registered to buy a ticket. Hope this works out for you!

Hi. Does euro rail passes work in evros Greece. Like Alexandroupolis to Thessaloniki train.

Hi. Again And Can You Tell Me How Does This Euro Rail Passes Work İf I Buy Online. Do I Have To Show It On The Train And Sit On Any Seat I Like Or İs There Another Way. Thanks?

Hi. You should be able to find all the info you need on the Euro Rail website, as this does not depend on the Greek trains. The Eurail website gives you an option to reserve your seat, so once you have your Eurail pass you should be able to? In any case, this route shouldn’t be too busy so you could ask at the Alexandroupolis station on the day before you travel.

I’m wanting to travel from Athens to Korinthos. If I buy a return ticket, can I use it on any convenient train, or am I restricted to the train time I specified when I booked?

You cannot pre-book a seat in those trains, so you can use your return portion for whichever service you want. As always, it’s best to confirm that at the time you buy your tickets.

I’m trying to purchase 2 tickets Athens – Kalambaka for July but there are no tickets available in the website yet. Is this normal? Is it too soon? How far in advance can tickets be purchased? Thank you!

Hi! Train tickets for July will go on sale much later in the month – at the moment, you can only find tickets for June – and yes, this is normal! Please keep checking every now and then.

Thank you!! I feel better now!

France set to launch €49 rail pass this summer: Who is eligible and when will it start?

The new pass will only be for young people under the age of 27.

French President Emmanuel Macron said last year he wanted a rail pass for all, but after months of negotiations, a scaled-back version has been agreed.

Following on from the success of Germany’s Deutschlandticket, France is set to launch its own version this summer.

In an interview with AFP on Wednesday French transport minister Patrice Vergriete said an agreement had been found with all regions. The scheme is expected to cost €49 per month and it will be available to around 700,000 young people under the age of 27 this July and August.

It will allow unlimited travel on TER and Intercity trains but will exclude high-speed TGV trains.

Back in September, President Emmanuel Macron promised the introduction of a national rail pass during an interview with the journalist and Youtuber known as Hugo Decrypt.

It was originally supposed to mirror the Deustchlandticket that allows unlimited travel on all local and regional public transport for €49 regardless of age in Germany.

The ticket has been a success with more than three million sales since its launch.

Que les moins de 27 ans puissent voyager en train de manière illimitée en France : devant Hugo, j'avais dit banco ! Le Pass Rail à 49€ par mois devient réalité dès cet été. Où irez-vous ? — Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) April 3, 2024

Is the French rail pass similar to the Deustchlandticket?

The French ticket quickly encountered problems with some regional mayors criticising the lack of detail in the plans and the offer of the state to fund 80 per cent of the cost, estimated to be €15 million.

  • Deutschlandticket: Germany will continue to offer €49 public transport pass in 2024

“In six months, the initial announcement of a French-style Deutschlandticket has now been translated into a €49 subscription for two months, on a network outside the Ile-de-France region, and only for young people,” Regions of France said in a statement on Wednesday.

The exclusion of the Ile-de-France region (the most populated in France) has also caused frustration.

“To travel around France, young people in the Haut-de-France region will have to buy an additional ticket worth up to €16 in the Ile-de-France region, in addition to the Rail Pass, in order to be able to transfer to other regions,” the Hauts-de-France region, which includes Lille and Calais, said.

Despite concerns, regional authorities have now agreed to the plans, according to Vergriete. It will initially be a one year experiment but there are hopes for it to be extended and expanded in the future.

What routes could you travel on with the France rail pass?

While there are criticisms of the plan, it will open up large parts of the country at affordable rates this summer for young people.

  • France's new night trains take you from healing waters to winter wonderlands

TER trains connect local destinations within French regions and serve around 1.1 million passengers per day.

Popular TER routes include Bordeaux to Arcachon (which costs around €13) and Marseille to Toulon (€14). Commuters who make these journeys regularly could save hundreds of euros with a pass.

The less than four-hour trip from Lyon to Marseille is another option where a one-way ticket often costs more than the €49 price of the new rail pass.

Popular intercity train routes include Bordeaux to Montpellier and the rail pass would also lead to savings on a return trip.

Greece

Patras, Greece

The city of Patras is known as Greece’s Gate to the West and is the perfect place to start your rail adventure. With a history spanning four millennia, Patras is rich in monuments from Ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine times. Most notable are Patras Castle towering over the city, and the ancient Roman Odeon which now hosts concerts in summer. More recently built highlights include the Saint Andrew of Patras Basilica , located on the city’s seafront. While overlooking the Gulf of Patras, look to your right to see the 1.8 mile (3 kilometers) long Rio-Antirrio bridge that connects the Peloponnese peninsula with the Greek mainland.

Take a train to the city of Corinth, at the very edge of the Peloponnessus region. The narrow Corinth Canal cuts through the land here, creating a gateway to nearby Athens. Before traveling on to Greece's capital, make sure to visit the Acrocorinth citadel. It overlooks the ruins of Ancient Corinth and is one of the most impressive sights in all of Greece. From Corinth, you can take a day trip to the city of Argos. An overwhelming number of historical monuments await you in the ancient town, and the rare collection in the Archeaological Museum is definitely worth a visit. Close to Argos you’ll find the ruins of Mycenae , a city shrouded in Greek mythology and the staging area for the legendary war on Troy.

Athens is known as the cradle of Western civilization. It’s a lively and mesmerizing city, with remnants of a glorious past around every corner. Standing high and mighty in the center of the city is the Parthenon temple , built on top of the Athenian Acropolis in 447 BC. Take a full day to explore the temple and the Acropolis museum on the southeastern slope. Other important monuments for your Athens itinerary include the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus and the ruins of the colossal Temple of Olympian Zeus . Walk across the Kerameikos to see ancient graves and sculptures, then watch the sunset over Athens from Areopagus hill.

Go to the Museum of Byzantine Culture to learn about the Byzantine Empire, and afterwards relax on Thessaloniki’s pleasant seafront. The Ultimate Guide to European Train Travel With a Eurail Pass

Here’s how every type of traveler—not just backpackers—can benefit from this all-in-one train ticket..

Eurail Passes can be used on scenic trains, too, like this one in Switzerland.

If you’re planning a multi-city tour of the continent this summer and will rely on trains to get around, you may want to consider purchasing a Eurail Pass. Haven’t thought about buying a Eurail Pass since your backpacking days? You’re not alone. The last time I traveled with one was in 2007 as a college student. After forking over about $500 (from my part-time job as a barista) for the multi-use train ticket, I rode at least a dozen trains from Amsterdam to Paris and on to Madrid over the course of a month that summer. I saved not only money but also time waiting to buy tickets because I could walk on to most trains and have the conductor punch my pass on board.

For beginners to European train travel, the Eurail Pass is a single document that allows non-European citizens to travel by train multiple times across a network of 33 European countries. The travel must occur over a specified period of time, and the pass forgos the need to buy individual point-to-point tickets. The Eurail Pass, which is celebrating its 64th anniversary this year, can be used for riding local trains, high-speed trains, and even night trains. In addition to the flexibility and time-saving benefits it affords, traveling with one can also save you money, depending on your travel plans.

Here’s everything you need to know about Eurail Passes before you buy one.

How do Eurail Passes work?

You can choose from either a One Country Pass , which covers train travel in a single country, or a Eurail Global Pass , which offers unlimited train travel across 33 countries in Europe, using their national railroads. Within each pass type, there are even more options. There are ones for children (ages 4 to 11), youth (12 to 27), adults (28+), and seniors (60+). They come in first- and second-class options across all age categories.

The passes also cover different trip lengths for both One Country and Global Passes. The flexible, four-days-in-one-month pass is for you if you’re going on a shorter getaway and won’t be taking trains regularly. The pass with three months of unlimited travel is best used for fast-paced trips where you plan to cover a lot of ground over an extended time.

The validities for flexible passes include:

  • Four travel days within one month
  • Five travel days within one month
  • Seven travel days within one month
  • 10 travel days within two months
  • 15 travel days within two months

There are also passes available for unlimited travel days during set periods of time. Those continuous train passes include durations of:

  • Two travel months
  • Three travel months

The pass is sold by the number of travel days you are planning on using it. Each travel day covers as many trains you’d like to take between the 24-hour time window from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on the same calendar day. Keep in mind, there are exceptions to be made if you’re taking a night train. For example, if you book a train that leaves on Monday night and arrives on Tuesday morning, you will only need to use one travel day (the day of your departure) to cover that trip. However, if you choose to board another train on Tuesday, you’ll have to use another travel day on your pass.

To find the ideal pass for your particular trip, Eurail built an online tool that lets you fill in your travel plans, including which countries you plan to visit, how many days you intend to travel by train, and the length of your entire trip. At the end of the short survey, it recommends the pass that suits your needs best.

Where can you buy a Eurail Pass?

You can buy any type of Eurail Pass online from Eurail.com , but several other sites sell them, too. RailPass and Rail Europe are both authorized vendors that sell Eurail Passes for around the same price as Eurail.com with slight variations to insurance and service fees.

Some offer free shipping and others offer special discounts and promo codes on tickets, so it’s best to check all your options before purchasing your pass to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

You can also purchase Eurail Passes at train stations in Europe, but that’s more expensive than ordering them online in advance.

How much does a Eurail Pass cost?

In 2023, the cost of a Eurail Global Pass purchased directly through Eurail starts at $276 for second-class fares and $351 for first-class seats for the four-days-in-one-month pass for adults. A 15-day unlimited pass for adults currently ranges from $498 to $631.

The most expensive pass is the three-month unlimited pass, which starts at $1,013 and goes up to $1,286 when bought directly through Eurail.

Considering that a two-month unlimited pass costs between $822 to $1,043, you’re only paying a few hundred more for an entire extra month of unlimited train travel.

One Country Passes are slightly more affordable and vary by each country. For example, adult passes for Italy bought directly from Eurail range from $142 to $270 for second class and $181 to $342 for first class.

Eurail also groups certain regions so you can get multiple countries for the price of one with its Benelux Pass (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) and Scandinavia Pass (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden). Note that Eurail does not offer One Country Passes for certain countries that are included in the Global Pass, such as Switzerland, Montenegro, and Bosnia.

Are Eurail Passes worth it?

It depends. If you know you’ll have four travel days over a one-month period, a second-class pass would cost most adults $276—or $69 per day. If the train you need to take costs more than $69, or if you’ll be taking multiple trains in one day that add up to more than that, it’s worth buying that pass. If you only need a less costly regional train to get between cities like Amsterdam and Brussels, however, then it’s probably not worth it.

For those who would argue that buying $50 RyanAir or EasyJet flights to jump from city to city is faster and cheaper, keep in mind that once you add on arriving early to the airport for security and all the bag fees you’d pay to check a bag, you might end up breaking even. Plus, train travel is more sustainable and more scenic.

Do you need reservations with a Eurail Pass?

In some instances, yes. For trains in popular countries like France, Spain, and Italy—especially in the summer—you will need to make an advance seat reservation at an additional cost (generally from around 3 to 10 euros), even if the fare is included with your Eurail Pass. In addition to those popular destinations, all night trains and most international high-speed trains throughout Europe require a supplemental reservation fee.

Some scenic trains, like the Bernina Express in Switzerland, also require one. To find out if you need to make a reservation, search for your desired route on the Eurail Timetable , and the results will show whether or not one is necessary.

Reservation fees vary between different countries and train services and must be paid directly to the railway carriers; payment can be made at the train station, online through the websites of the national railway companies, by phone, or through Eurail’s Rail Planner app. Eurail recommends making train reservations two months in advance during the summer and ahead of holidays to guarantee yourself a seat.

Alternatively, you can opt to ride on regional trains, which don’t require seat reservations. Even though they are slower, if you have the time to stop along the way, you’re likely to discover a few appealing villages you never would have happened upon by taking the high-speed route. To find trains that don’t require reservations, check the “no seat reservations required” box when searching on the Eurail Timetable page.

What European countries does the Eurail Pass cover?

There are currently 33 countries in Europe with rail carriers that accept Eurail Passes. Great Britain’s train operators nearly pulled out of the agreement in August 2019 . After negotiations with the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents the U.K. train industry, travelers will continue to be able to use their Eurail passes within Great Britain.

Here’s the full list of the 33 countries currently serviced by Eurail: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey. Download the train route map .

Eurail covers train routes in 33 countries.

How far in advance do you need to buy a Eurail Pass?

You can buy a Eurail Pass up to 11 months in advance of your trip, as long as it is activated at a European train station within that 11-month period. You can also preactivate your pass for a specific date when you check out at Eurail.com to avoid waiting in line at the train station to do so.

In 2020, Eurail launched its first-ever mobile version of the Eurail Pass via its Rail Planner App . Now instead of waiting for the physical document to be delivered in the mail—or constantly worrying about losing it during your trip—you can download the app and load your mobile pass onto it as soon as your order confirmation email lands in your inbox.

Are Eurail Passes just for college students?

You may have been under the impression that only budget backpackers in their 20s can benefit from Eurail Passes, but the passes are actually available to all age groups. And while previously those 27 and under were the only age group eligible for discounts, in 2019, Eurail also introduced a 10 percent discount for people over the age of 60 , too.

Eurail passes are also great for families. While kids age 3 or younger don’t need a pass to travel, children ages 4 to 11 are eligible for a free Child Pass. Up to two children are allowed to travel for free with one adult. Find out more about family discounts here .

What are other benefits to having a Eurail Pass?

All Eurail Pass–holders are eligible for discounts on select museum tickets and boat tours throughout the entire 33-country network. But one of the major perks of having an unlimited train ticket that includes night trains is the hotel savings. By sleeping on a train, you’ll get from point A to point B and save money on hotels at the same time.

Eurail Passes aren’t only for use on trains either—they can be used on ferries and public transportation in some countries, too. See the full list of participating train, ferry, and public transport companies that accept Eurail Passes on board. In fact, the Greek Islands Pass now offers ferry service to 55 islands, making it a viable option for island-hopping.

OSE train in the Larisis station of Athens Greece

Although the most popular way to travel in Greece is by bus (Ktel) , traveling by trains can also be convenient. Fares for trains in Greece are also less expensive than bus tickets. The main train station in Athens is Larissis Station , while in Thessaloniki the station is located on Monastiriou Avenue, about 15 min drive from Aristotle Square.

Information about domestic and international train links but also information about thematic trains in Greece.

International Rail Links

In the past, there were international trains connecting Greece to Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, and Istanbul but nowadays these trains have stopped working.

Domestic Trains Links

The Greek railway system is served by OSE , the Greek train organization. The main railway routes in Greece are Athens-Thessaloniki, Athens-Patra (served by Proastiakos train till Kiato), Athens/Thessaloniki-Alexandroupoli (Dikaia), Athens/Thessaloniki-Florina and Athens/Thessaloniki-Kalambaka ( Meteora ). Over the last years, there is a large effort to renovate the railway system and make Greece trains faster. Note that in the route Athens-Thessaloniki, there is also an Intercity Train that covers the route in 4 hours, while the normal train needs about 6 hours.

Thematical Trains

For cultural reasons, few rail lines have been preserved by OSE and work till today for tourist reasons. These thematic trains in Greece are: - Train from Diakofto to Kalavryta : this route with the cog train is today a tourist attraction that starts from Diakofto in northern Peloponnese, crosses Vouraikos Gorge, passes by Zachlorou village and then arrives in Kalavryta . The route lasts for 1 hour and it takes place all year round, on weekends and national holidays. - Steam Train of Pelion : the steam train of Pelion departs from Ano Lehonia, makes a stop in Ano Gatzea and arrives in Milies in Pelion , crossing a place of wild natural beauty. The route lasts for 90 minutes and takes place in summer on the weekends. - Trains to Katakolo to Ancient Olympia : the route from Katakolo to Ancient Olympia lasts for 45 min and serves the thousands of international tourists that arrive at Katakolon by cruise ship. Train schedules vary depending on the month and the traffic.

The rail pass that allows unlimited travel around Britain, unless you live here

It can't compete with the €49 options on the continent, but it's much better value than some season tickets bought by weary uk-based commuters.

unlimited rail travel uk travel trains not for uk residents europe unlimited travel monthly pass

Europe’s new fashion for unlimited rail travel – available in Germany, Portugal and, soon, France, many priced at €49 a month – has got more people travelling by train and prompted calls for the UK to introduce its own version. Only we already have one in Britain. It’s called the BritRail pass and it’s available to everyone – except people who live here .

It’s hard to conceive of any other sector having the gall to offer discounted services to everyone bar their own citizens. But, like water firms and energy companies, rail operators appear to exist in a parallel universe, one that seems maddeningly indifferent to the mood and means of the nation.

Europe’s best-value unlimited rail passes, from as little as €1 per journey

Europe's best-value unlimited rail passes, from as little as €1 per journey

And the BritRail pass – set to the backdrop of sky-high rail fares, abandoned HS2 ambitions, and falling passenger satisfaction – is perhaps the best expression of that indifference.

It is the product that train firms (many of them foreign owned) would rather you didn’t know about, but hope more people overseas do. Like those off-plan London flats that were sold in Hong Kong without ever going on the market here.

It doesn’t come cheap, mind. While Germany’s Deutschlandticket allows unlimited train travel across the country for just €49 a month, the month-long BritRail pass costs almost 14 times that. Still, at £568, it’s £100 cheaper than a monthly season ticket between London and Margate, and far less prescriptive – you can use it to go anywhere in the country. Or as Trainline, which sells it on its website , explains: “Whether it be in Scotland to visit the Highlands, soaring up the north-east coast, or taking in the stunning views of the Cornwall countryside, there are plenty of things to see using a BritRail pass.”

Sounds wonderful. The pass also offers the kind of flexibility that many British commuters would love to see from their season tickets in this age of hybrid working. There are seven versions to choose from. Those who don’t want to commit to a whole month, or even a week, can pick up a simple two-day pass for just £96, which is roughly equivalent to a single fare between London and Penzance.

The BritRail pass was created by the Rail Delivery Group – the organisation representing train firms – to “make rail the first choice for tourists visiting Britain” at a time when, ironically, it’s fast becoming the least preferred option for many Britons.

It’s an admirable aim, of course. We need more people travelling by train to decongest the roads, cut carbon and detoxify the air, and cheap monthly rail passes have been shown to do just that – when they are made available to all.

Germany’s Deutschlandticket led to a 25 per cent surge in passenger numbers on regional services, according to recent data from the national operator, Deutsche Bahn. It’s been so successful that Portugal copied the idea wholesale.

Now France has unveiled a version of its own, albeit with caveats (only people aged 26 or younger will be eligible for one). Still, at least they had the decency to make it available to their own.

You’d think that Rail Delivery Group might have seen what’s happening on the continent and developed a similar pass for the people who actually live in Britain. But, alas, no. However, don’t despair. “While there isn’t currently a domestic equivalent,” a spokesperson for the organisation told me, “UK customers can save [money] buying advance tickets and access further discounts via railcards, which saves a third off the cost of most rail fares across Great Britain.”

In other words, made do with what we’ve got. No thanks. See you in Berlin.
