Home Free Shares Details of New ‘Crazy(er) Life’ Album [EXCLUSIVE]

home free 2022 tour songs

Home Free , who will embark on their Crazy(er) Life Tour in March, has a new album coming out this year. The next set of tunes, like their recent AS SEEN ON TV record, is another celebration of the whirlwind of the past decade for the all-vocal group.

“As the name of the tour suggests, that goes hand-in-hand with an album, also called Crazy(er) Life,” Tim Foust reveals to Everything Nash . “Turns out, it’s another ten-year retrospective. We decided to do all-new recordings of all of the songs that we released on our first album after The Sing-Of f.”

“We figured if Taylor Swift is doing it, then we ought to do it too,” Austin Brown adds with a laugh.

When announcing their Crazy(er) Life Tour, Home Free also revealed they were cutting back on touring, a decision that Foust says is a result of their time at home during the pandemic.

“Honestly, it was sort of a by-product of the forced time at home during COVID,” Foust explains. “We’ve never been home that long, so we didn’t know what that was like. And after we got over the shock of it, we realized we kind of liked being at home, actually. And our families actually like us at home, too. So far. We’ll see. Maybe by 2026 we’ll be touring more again.”

home free 2022 tour songs

They might have less dates on the calendar, but for Home Free, their favorite part of being a musical act is their time on stage.

“The shows are the best part of this whole thing, sitting there in front of the crowd, just getting people going wild,” Brown says. “It’s, knock on wood, what happens most of the time.”

Each of the Home Free members, in addition to their work together, also work on their own projects and individual endeavors, something they say only makes them stronger together.

“We’re Home Free,” says Adam Chance. “There’s always new music coming, all the time.”

“We all have side projects to some degree … We figure the more the merrier,” Foust continues. “It’s not a competition. It’s just collaborative. If somebody writes a song and releases a song individually that’s great. it’s like, why not do the Home Free version as well?”

Home Free just came back from the 2024 Country Music Cruise , and are all already eager to return for the 2025 Country Music Cruise as well, part of an all-star lineup that includes Neal McCoy , John Michael Montgomery ,  Deana Carter ,  The Bellamy Brothers ,  Diamond Rio ,  The Isaacs ,  Jamie O’Neal  and others.

Maggie Baugh

There was a time when multi-instrumentalist Maggie Baugh could have foundherself at the renowned Julliard school in New York City, playing classical pieces from thelikes of Tchaikovsky and Mozart. But life took a turn when she discoveredthe sounds of Sara Evans and Rascal Flatts, and in turn, she found a greater love for pouring her heartout through lyrics and country music. And thank God she did. Currently, the career of this spitfire with the crazy addictive personality is movingat warm speed. not only has she reached one million + streams on Spotify with her viral hit"Think About Me," she also finds herself standing alongside the likes of Luke Bryan andTrace Adkins, rocking out her fiddle in the music video for "Where the Country Girls At." Addthat to the fact that her new single "Drinking to the Broken Hearts' instantly snagged theattention PEOPLE and CMT, and its quite evident that this talented soul is here to stay. Born in Boca Raton, Florida, Baugh was just two years old when she asked herparents for a violin, seemingly speared on by the classical music and intriguing charactersshe would watch on theDisney ChannelshowLittle Einsteins. At the age of six, she beganto play that violin, ultimately finding herself on the stage of Carnegie Hall just five yearslater. But soon, Baugh found herself throwing little bluegrass into a Bach concerto andimpromtu licks to age-old classics, and it was evident her dreams were flying off thatsheetmusic in front of her. At 12 years old, she began playing the guitar and putting her soul intosongwriting, and just one year later, Baugh made her first trip to Nashville. And from there, her career caught fire. Soon, Baugh was playing her brand of country music all over south Florida, headlining festivals and opening on the ampitheater stages for artists such as LukeCombs, Kip Moore, and Chris Lane. And following a career-altering, personal invitation fromLive Nation's Brian O'Connell, she received a coveted spot on the lineup of Rock the Ocean's Tortuga Music Fest, which was named "Festival of the Year" at last years ACMAwards. As success began to swirl around her, Baugh made the decision to make herpermanent move to Nashville andjust 18 years old.

In 2020, while the entertainment industry found themselves at a standstill due tothe pandemic, Baugh found herself busier than ever, utilizing social media to connect to herfans in any way she could. From online musiclessons to her crazy antics, Baugh led withauthenticity, and soon found herself a tribe of fans who not only love her brand of music, but who loved her relatability. Her openness about tough topics such as depression, bullying and suicide instantly madeher a virtual friend to many, especially when they needed her most.

Today, after years of paying her dues out on the road, the twenty-something withthe girl next door vibe and the Doc Martens on her feet finds herself on the cusp of countrymusic stardom. Not only is her authentic nature on and off the stage finding its way into the hearts of a growing legion of fans, but it's also working on the industry, who have taken aliking to her long list of impressive talents.

In thelast year alone, CMT Has added both of the independent artist's latest releases to their "CMT Next Women of Country," with the CMA also adding Baugh to their "Fresh from Nashville" and "Celebrating Women of Country" Apple playlists to spportBaugh's debutsingle "Think About Me." Spotify and Apple Music also added the rising starto their "Celebrating Women in Country" playlists alongside A-list artists such as Carly 2Pearce, Cassadee Pope and Lainey Wilson, along with the "New Boots," "Breakout Country," "Release Radar," "Next from Nashville" and "New Music Nashville," with Baughas a featured cover artist spot for Spotify's editorial playlist "Fresh Finds: Country"

And after Spotify added her second single on those same playlists, PEOPLE Magazine premiered Baugh's music video for "Drinking to the Broken Hearts." CMT alsoadded the sweet video to their homepage, along with a beaming tweet to their 1.8 millionTwitter Followers. And it is this support that will soon get her back out on the road and infront of her hundreds of thousands of loyal fans in 2022, fans who find her nothing short ofirresistible.

"I just want to write music that is relatable and music that will help people forgetabout was going on in their life for a little while," she says. "Music can bring people togetherand help them forget how crazy the world can be sometimes. And if I can put a smile ontheir face for two hours, then I've done my job"

Just love the guys. Only thing I was put off with was the Venue. A night club with no seating is not the best for older people. Next time it would have to be in a better venue if I was to see them again. Travelled from TOWNSVILLE to Melbourne to stand. Wasn’t happy. The guys were perfection and I did enjoy them.

Absolutely fantastic show ...fantastic sound , definitely worth the trip , loved every minute ...only one complaint , 3 and a half hours standing was a bit hard for us old folk ...hope they come to Q PAC next time ....would definitely go again and take our friends

It was AMAZING! I went to see them in April and this time I think was even better! The songs were all amazing and I was singing along with all of them. By the time I left the stadium, my voice was almost gone from singing and cheering with the crowd and the songs. I want to try and go see them again soon, and maybe get VIP next time. They are also great at interacting with the crowd on the songs as well and tell jokes or funny stories about their recent events. I just can’t tell you enough how much I enjoyed them and will forever be a fan. - Tennessee Home Free fan.

Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith Have Never Say Never Reunion at Coachella 2024

The Grammy winner, 30, shared a sweet moment with his longtime friend during the weekend desert festival

Jaden Smith will never say never to Justin Bieber .

The longtime friends were spotted hanging out at Coachella over the weekend and shared a sweet reunion moment.

In a video shared on TikTok , Smith, 25, playfully danced with his former collaborator before wrapping his arms around his neck. Bieber, 30, then went in and planted a quick kiss on Smith’s cheek as the “Icon” singer walked away to greet another person standing near the musicians.

Bieber was spotted at the festival throughout the weekend with his wife, Hailey Baldwin Bieber , while Smith was also seen out and about with friends and made sure to stop by J Balvin ’s headlining set on the festival’s last night to see his dad, Will Smith , surprise the crowd.

The 55-year-old actor delighted crowds when he joined Balvin on stage, shouting at the crowd, “Coachella!” before diving into a rendition of “Men in Black” from his 1997 hit movie. Smith rapped the lyrics to the song while Balvin stood beside him, and as the track reached its iconic dance breakdown, they performed the steps in unison, along with backup dancers.

In a post on her Instagram Stories, Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith , shared a video of the performance, writing, “When @jbalvin makes an unforgettable night ✨.” Both she and Jaden were spotted amongst the large crowd watching the Bad Boys star take the stage.

Bieber, meanwhile, eventually got on stage himself as he, too, surprised crowds on the last day of the festival and joined Tems to perform “Essence Remix” for the first time. Tems, 28, had teased her performance on X earlier in the day, writing, “Coachella! I’m too exciteddd I have a surprise tonight 👀❤️‍🔥.”

The performance marked the third time the singer has graced the Coachella stage. In 2019, he made his first appearance in Indio, California as he surprised crowds during Ariana Grande 's performance and the two sang his 2015 hit, "Sorry," together.

It was his first time onstage in two years at that point, as he acknowledged on stage, telling fans, "This is my first time on stage in two years. I had to get my groove back, my swag back."

In 2022, Bieber once again surprised crowds as he came out during Daniel Caesar's set and the duo performed their chart-topping hit, "Peaches."

The Grammy winner’s surprise return to the stage – a rare occurrence since he canceled his Justice World Tour in 2022 after he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome – came after he teased possible new music in the near future on Instagram in February.

Bieber posted two carousels of photos on Instagram full of shots of him in the studio and rehearsing on a microphone with bandmates, prompting excitement from his fans at his potential return. Even Instagram was excited, as the app’s official account commented , “Justin’s back 🥳.”

Earlier this month, an insider told PEOPLE that Bieber and his wife of five years are “doing really well” despite rumors circulating online questioning the couple’s relationship status.

“There’s no divorce and no truth to that whatsoever,” the insider says. “They are very, very happy.”

Taylor Swift's No. 1 songs ranked, including 'Cruel Summer,' 'All Too Well,' 'Anti-Hero'

home free 2022 tour songs

When you hear someone say " Taylor Swift " you may think of her fashion , her famous friends or those outrageous conspiracy theories.

But what truly makes Swift exceptional is her music. She is the first artist to have a billion dollar-grossing tour . The first person to win the album of the year Grammy four times . She owns Billboard Hot 100 records for the female artist with the most-charted songs (231), most Top 40 songs (137), most Top-10 songs (49) and second-most No. 1 debuts (six). And those are just a sampling of Swift’s record-breaking success in recent years

In anticipation of Swift’s 11th studio album, “ The Tortured Poets Department ,” arriving April 19 and poised to break more musical records, we’ve ranked her 11 No. 1 hits (and yes, she probably would appreciate the numerical symmetry to her new album).

11. ‘Willow’ (2020)

The wispy ballad from “Evermore” dances prettily with its spine of acoustic guitar and a lilting chorus. But, like many of the songs on Swift’s second foray into folk-leaning pop, it’s airy to the point of fluttering into the ether.

10. ‘Bad Blood’ (2015)

As the fourth single from Swift’s “1989” album, there was hardly anything to prove following No. 1 hits in “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” and a Top 10 entry with the gliding “Style.” But the song, while gently biting in its contention of good times gone sour, is remembered less for its repetitive chorus and more for setting the foundation for the snarling “Look What You Made Me Do” on her next album.

9. ‘Cardigan’ (2020)

“Folklore,” the album that birthed Swift’s sixth No. 1 hit, arrived as a welcome surprise a few months into the pandemic's lonely lockdowns. The exchange of glistening synths from her previous release, “Lover,” to the soft piano and hazy production from Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff on this lead single from “Folklore” surprised fans. But they quickly embraced the new vibe as she retreated to a world of enchanted forests and moss-covered pianos.

8. ‘Cruel Summer’ (2023)

Follow along: The song resides on 2019’s “Lover.” The COVID-19 pandemic nixed plans to release it as a single in 2020. The melodic synth-pop ditty – always a fan favorite, and apparently one of Swift’s as well – resurfaced during her Eras Tour when it debuted in March 2023 and became a viral hit, returning to the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2023. The swirly, girly pop anthem crept to No. 1 to mark her 10th chart-topper.

7. ‘All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)’ (2021)

The much-publicized, admirably savvy decision by Swift to rerecord her albums so she would own her masters allowed her to release the full 10-minute presentation (aka “Taylor’s Version”) of the winding breakup ballad initially released on her 2012 “Red” album. It’s one of her most verbose, but with its vivid storytelling about making sense of wounding memories , the time flies.

6. ‘Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version)’ (2023)

Fans think the venom-spiked lyrics target former boyfriend Harry Styles. Whoever she's singing about, Swift’s most recent No. 1 that was delivered as a bonus track on “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” is a winsome marriage of layered background vocals and stinging words. “If she has blue eyes, I will surmise that you’ll probably date her,” Swift delivers with sarcastic precision. That the vitriol is softened by a plush melody hardly diminishes the verbal blows.

5. ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ (2012)

Swift ascended to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with this stomper, her inaugural slide from full country heroine to pop starlet. As she smacks back a paramour who tries to return to her good graces, Swift conserves her brawniest words for a spoken-word bridge that highlights her relatability: “Ugh, so he calls me up and he’s like, ‘I still love you’ and I’m like, I just, I mean, this is just exhausting, you know?”

4. 'Shake It Off' (2014)

A perky pop bauble that sounds slight, but is undoubtedly irresistible. Swift is so musically canny that she fuses ‘80s-era synths with a ‘60s-era girl group sheen and makes it sound unique. The song is not only an undeniable concert highlight, but its straightforward directive in the chorus still serves as a useful reminder on tough days.

3. ‘Anti-Hero’ (2022)

Her confidence as a songwriter clearly boosted from her poetic musings on “Folklore” and “Evermore,” Swift returned in 2022 with “Midnights” and its lead single showcased internal screw-ups and apologies with unflinching honesty. Shades of Kate Bush are insinuated in the dark melody, but the real hero is the ready-made T-shirt slogan, “It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem, it’s me.”

2. ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ (2017)

Swift has never dodged a fight, and she made clear on this searing slice of electropop that if you want to come for the queen, you best be ready. In a way, the song signaled a rebirth for Swift, who proved – as if she needed to – that the cute girl in the tennis sneakers was equally as capable as donning a snake-inspired cat suit and extending her claws.

1. ‘Blank Space’ (2014)

Swift’s l y rical mastery presents itself in nearly every song she’s ever penned – even a seemingly simplistic chorus in “Welcome To New York” is laced with knowing nods – but this “1989” standout best exposes her genius. The clip-clop beat, the staccato delivery, the seesawing between flirty (“I can make the bad guys good for a weekend”) and daring (“I’ve got a blank space, baby, and I’ll write your name”) are all wicked delights. But the song also contains perhaps the best line she’s ever written: “Darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream.” Swiftian perfection.

Beyoncé's 'cowboy carter' is a portrait of the artist getting joyously weird.

Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter has ignited discourse about the place of Black musicians in country music. But it's also evidence of its creator's desire to break genre walls by following her most eccentric impulses.

This essay first appeared in the NPR Music newsletter. Sign up for early access to articles like this one, Tiny Desk exclusives, listening recommendations and more.

After two months of anticipation, Cowboy Carter has been out in the world for nearly a fortnight, and the discourse is thick as sawdust on a honky-tonk floor. Beyoncé's spangled opus, as lengthy and florid as a Sergio Leone classic — it really could have been called The Good, the Bey and the Ugly -- has generated more think pieces than any pop phenomenon since her friendly rival Taylor's Eras tour.

I've kept track of the coverage of Cowboy Carter and it's, well, something. Actually it's everything, ranging from paeans to (not too many) pans . Not weighing in hasn't been an option for most music writers, who have spilled tons of ink documenting the album's backstory, tracing its references, and examining its work of legacy building. What could I add to the discourse? Well, this: Whether it's considered a champion's walk, an overlong stumble, a powerful political gesture or a highly personal cri de couer — one thing Cowboy Carter is, undeniably even if no one has said it, is weird. And that's a wonderful thing.

10 takeaways from Beyoncé's new album, 'Cowboy Carter'

On 'Cowboy Carter,' Beyoncé's country is as broad as the public she serves

Album Review

On 'cowboy carter,' beyoncé's country is as broad as the public she serves.

Not that Beyoncé herself would ever admit to her own eccentricity. She's declared herself a diligent student of the genre she sought to revise, and many of the touchstones on this massive grab bag of ballads and bangers check the boxes of cultural intervention. She features Dolly and Willie; shows us her boots, brand-name jeans and whiskey bottle; includes a murder ballad and her perspective on that ultimate country emblem, the American flag. (She sees it as red: blood, Alabama clay, indigenous people.)

Her inclusion of the undersung Black Grand Ole Opry pioneer Linda Martell as a collaborator nods to efforts to rectify historical omissions that have been going on in and around Nashville for years — shoutout to the Black Opry crew, to artist and radio host Rissi Palmer and to Martell's granddaughter, who continues to crowd-fund a documentary that Beyoncé really should just finance.

How Black women reclaimed country and Americana music in 2021

Best Music Of 2021

How black women reclaimed country and americana music in 2021.

But the way she assembles these hardly unique elements is startling. Sidestepping either a conventional foray into country's traditional sounds or a risk-averse pop approach that would just use those elements as window-dressing, she and her dozens of collaborators assemble a cosmic omnibus of reference points while drilling down on her long-standing obsessions. While it's correct to call this album an epic and a strong political statement, it's an idiosyncratic one, more akin to Jim Jarmusch's off-kilter visions of American heritage — especially Mystery Train -- than, say, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon .

It may seem off to identify eccentricity in a project that includes radio-ready Miley Cyrus and Post Malone collabs, and which was quickly endorsed by none other than the Vice President. Yet the first thing I thought of when I sat down to listen to Cowboy Carter was an album from 1967 that's beloved by many rock cognoscenti for its very peculiarness. Van Dyke Parks 's Song Cycle was the first solo album by the noted composer, arranger and producer. It is a shambling, sunnily psychedelic portrait of California living from the perspective of a transplanted white East Coaster with Southern roots. (Parks was born in Mississippi but grew up in Princeton singing in a boys' choir.)

Rich with strings and gorgeous melodies and rife with punnily poetical lines like, "Nowadays a Yankee dread not take his time to wend to sea" in a song about Parks's own experience trying to make it within the L.A. music biz hustle, no less, Song Cycle features Parks's birdlike warble, and by birdlike, I don't mean Beyoncé's operatic forays on new songs like "DAUGHTER" or "FLAMENCO," but Tweety Bird or the Peanuts ' Woodstock. Parks made the unfinished psychedelic masterpiece Smile with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and later worked with 21st-century visionaries Joanna Newsom and Gaby Moreno, among others. But Song Cycle is his strange baby. Though it's a rich work that offers real insight into the melting late 1960s American West Coast dream, Song Cycle is not for everyone. Parks experimented joyfully with song structure, sound effects and lyricism, painting a floating world that requires time and sympathy to comprehend.

Cowboy Carter sounds absolutely nothing like Song Cycle , yet I thought about the latter as I sunk into the non-linear, fragmentary experience of listening to it. I appreciate how Beyoncé sticks to her guns throughout, just as Parks maintained his whimsicality and dreaminess. Stacked harmonies do here what strings do on Song Cycle , lending grandeur to the opening "American Requiem" and tenderness to the ballads "MY ROSE" and "FLAMENCO" (the latter pairs them artfully with Andalusian hand-claps); yet those vocals also set a kind of Broadway stage for the songs, rendering them winsomely surreal. The album's employment of banjo and pedal steel signify country, sure, but they're used in unusual ways, as Parks uses accordion and balalaika. The distortions are highly individualistic, nothing like what current country sounds like. (Exception: that Post Malone duet, "LEVII'S JEANS.") Same with the roots references. The interlude "OH LOUISIANA" speeds up a Chuck Berry vocal to turn that rock and roll founder into helium. On the tour de force Tina Turner tribute "YA YA," Beyoncé begins with a spoken exchange with her background singers that calls back to her campy turn in Austin Powers in Goldmember as well as to Southern rap's most glorious weirdo breakthrough, Outkast's "Hey Ya!" Sure, this is historical work, but it's hardly textbook.

These tracks stand alongside others in a sprawl of concepts, tempos and tones until Cowboy Carter turns into a full-on megamix, its final four tracks returning to the dance party of Renaissance , abruptly concluded with a literal showstopper, the Broadway-ready "AMEN." The album is immersive, but it's a jerky, bucking rodeo ride, not a narrative that lends itself to easy absorption. And through it all Beyoncé bends country and blues tropes — those two genres are inseparable, something Cowboy Carter acknowledges — to the themes she can never abandon: the perils of attempted monogamy, the joy and terror involved in mothering and her own determination to be great, an ambition that she views as a responsibility more than a privilege.

Concept albums can be relatively straightforward, like Willie Nelson's classic Red Headed Stranger , but often they do come out ornate and leaky as their makers dump all of their ideas within the frame. Beyoncé nods sonically to a few that came after Song Cycle . At certain points, Sly and the Family Stone's murky funk on There's a Riot Goin' On comes to mind. Michael Jackson never made a full-on concept album, but that tarnished legend requires mention because Beyoncé's massive ambition rivals his more than anyone's. (Maybe Madonna's; she did make a concept record, Erotica . Or that soundtrack-maker Prince's.)

More recent touchstones include the high-concept forays of Janelle Monaé, whose " Tightrope " seems as much a touchstone for "YA YA" as does Tina Turner's shimmy, and the efforts of two of her collaborators on Cowboy Carter . Raphael Saadiq, who co-produced several tracks, released a similarly massive and emotionally affecting concept album , Jimmy Lee , in 2019. And the Virginia-born multihyphenate Shaboozie, a visionary character whom Beyoncé has apparently recognized as a kindred soul, paid tribute to the landscapes and culture of his native state on his own 2022 disquisition on the same themes as Cowboy Carter . Its title? Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die .

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women?

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women?

When I associate Cowboy Carter with these equally adventurous and strange concept albums and the outsiders who made them, I don't mean to reduce the impact of her work or her centrality as an era-defining artist. Instead, I'm trying to free this fun and unfettered music from the burden of predefined significance. Beyoncé has, by her own will as well as her fans's needs, become what Doreen St. Felix calls an "übermatriarch," not only a biological mother but the nurturing, burdened mother of all of her faithful — and of Black America, a role she inherited and claimed from the equally eccentric and more reluctantly ennobled Aretha Franklin. The seriousness of her responsibilities has earned her a lot: millions nearing billions of dollars, a place among heads of state and a fan base that strikes fear in the hearts of naysayers. But for an artist, such success ultimately confines. Only a few have been able to remain playful and light-footed as their public images have hardened into marble.

Two such artists, as it happens, are ones Beyoncé directly takes on in Cowboy Carter : The Beatles, whose members never stopped releasing humorous and even nonsense songs alongside their wedding-and-funeral ballads and politicized anthems; and Dolly Parton, the most agile pop star of all, who's crossed into nearly every category that's interested her with her own birdlike laugh and dimpled smile. Dolly herself has deep and strange predilections: her many songs about dead children, for example, or her way of turning sexuality cartoonish not only as comic relief, but as a weapon. It's her oddball side as well as her musical genius that's allowed her to slip through so many doors.

Beyoncé did not create Cowboy Carter to honor white artists like Parton, but she made a wise decision by invoking her as a partner and a patron saint. In the spoken interlude that precedes Beyoncé's rewrite of her classic "Jolene," Parton refers to Beyoncé's famous line about a white woman's allure for her Black husband, "Becky with the good hair," as "that hussy with the good hair." She drawls out the insult, though, as if she's in the middle of a Hee Haw skit: huzzzzy . It's a goofy, enjoyably destabilizing moment — an eccentric gesture that reminds us that as serious as music can be, it's most powerful when its subversions are also fun.

Phosphorescent releases dreamy new album 'Revelator,' reflects on making Nashville home

home free 2022 tour songs

Phosphorescent —the stage name for Nashville-based singer-songwriter Matthew Houck—spent six months crafting his newest album, but it was recorded over the course of only five days in his East Nashville studio.

On April 5, he released his new album "Revelator," a spacey, lonely nine-track album about drift and exploring one's own psyche.

The album comes alongside a spring tour that will take Houck to Mississippi, Texas, Georgia and more before heading out in August on his first European run of shows in six years.

Houck spent an afternoon with The Tennessean in the music studio that he built from the ground-up in Nashville to discuss his life in Music City and the arrival of "Revelator."

Houck's life changes with fatherhood and Nashville move

The Alabama-born alternative-indie artist moved to Nashville about seven years ago, but much of the city still feels unexplored to him.

"It still feels kind of like a newish town to me," he explained, "I felt like I didn't really get ingrained in the town for the first couple of years."

Houck was zoned in, working to finish his 2018 album "C'est La Vie" when he first moved to Nashville. He's also a dad to three young kids, and then he found himself in the pandemic. Time flew by before Houck realized he hadn't soaked in the city.

As it turns out, Phosphorescent has only played a handful of times in Nashville due to touring schedules and the pandemic.

"Revelator," however, isn't necessarily centered around Nashville. "I think this one just felt free from time and place," he said.

"It really did feel like there was magic in the air. It was easy to just get lost in making the record and staying in the world of these other sounds. I do think it probably could have been made anywhere," he said.

'Revelator' arrives: A hazy, lonely, pensive album

"Revelator" was recorded in Houck's Nashville studio following his 2022 collection, "The Full Moon Project," through which he released a cover each month on the full moon. Some of his covers included Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Corpus Christi Bay" by Robert Earl Keen.

In 2018, Houck released his most recent studio album "C’est La Vie," an acclaimed alternative album with hit "C'est La Vie No.2." And now, six years later, Phosphorescent's eighth studio album is here.

"It's an inward looking record, for better or worse," Houck said about "Revelator." "It's a sad record."

" Revelator" was created alongside collaborators Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs, Jim White of Dirty Three and Houck’s partner, singer-songwriter and pianist Jo Schornikow.

Houck said the album was recorded over five live sessions in February of last year. "Nobody knew the songs yet," he said. "We didn't know each other yet.

"And so it was a thing of like, really wanting to trust everyone's initial instinct... then did a lot of overdubbing." From there, he worked on the record for another six months, tweaking and perfecting the original frames of the songs.

His process starts with a creative burst of lyricism, he said, followed by months of fine-tuning, and even now, Houck says he's still processing what this album really means for him and about him.

"It's still actually it's kind of revealing itself to me now, what it is about," Houck said of the album.

"If you're lucky, you get into a state when you're writing stuff that just turns off your front brain -- and just kind of go with the back brain," he said. "Kind of like automatic writing, but it's something close to that. You just trust the process of it and you kind of look at what's there."

The nine-track album is an ethereal, dreamy and reflective collection of indie-Americana tracks.

Phosphorescent's record starts with the title track, "Revelator," a flowing, hazy track that showcases Houck's vulnerable lyrics and emotive voice. Houck says the track was the album's North Star, that is only made sense to name the album after the track.

"I got tired of bein a badass all the time," he sings. "I don't need anybody better / I don't need anybody ever, I never have."

Houck notes that the album was "a lot more affected by the pandemic than I would have thought it was." Appropriately, the songs capture feelings of finding oneself in solitude and turning inwards, instead of to others.

Houck draws inspiration from family on new album

Despite capturing these feelings of isolation, Houck's album was deeply inspired by his loved ones.

Houck's parter Jo Schornikow wrote one song on the album, “The World Is Ending." It became the first Phosphorescent track on an original album to be penned by anyone other than Houck.

"I just adored that song, I thought it was one of the most saddest and most beautiful things I've ever heard," he said. So I was like, 'Can I record that?' It's like that song just dovetailed so perfectly with all these other terrifically sad songs that I was making."

The track has a warm flow to it despite its morose lyrics. The song goes: "I might have apologized / But I have never been wrong / I know the world is ending."

"The World Is Ending" isn't the only song to have been created with the help of Houck's family. Song "It's All the Same" came to being with the help of Houck's daughter.

"I was just up in her room one afternoon and she just had this little piece of paper on her desk," Houck said.

"She had been looking out the window where there was these trees and (she) had written, 'Empty bare leaf trees and trees with leaves. They're all the same.' I was like, (that's) just so stunningly beautiful."

Houck took the phrase and used it as the beginning of the tune, singing "Leafy trees and empty trees / They're all the same / Blowing trees and frozen trees / They're all the same."

The song brings listeners into a world of positive nihilism. Though Houck—and his daughter—may be pointing out that everything is the same, Houck finds beauty in the "sameness" of nature. That appreciation is reflected in the track, which holds its own grateful radiance.

That juxtaposition isn't just the center of that one song, it's the crux of Phosphorescent's entire "Revelator," balancing feelings of loneliness and desolation with deep gratitude and self-exploration.
