Cornell University

Ithaca, NY •

  • • Rating 3.79 out of 5   2,071 reviews

Sophomore: At Cornell University, my experience has been highly enriching. The rigorous curriculum in Applied Economics and Management, focusing on finance and real estate, has honed my analytical and critical thinking skills. The diversity of the student body and the range of extracurricular opportunities, such as my involvement in the Alpha Fund and the Cornell Real Estate Consulting Club, have greatly enhanced my learning and networking experiences. While the academic rigor is challenging, it's instrumental for personal and professional growth. I would appreciate more hands-on learning experiences related to real estate and finance to bridge the gap between theory and practice. ... Read 2,071 reviews

Boston University

Boston, MA •

  • • Rating 3.69 out of 5   3,630 reviews

Alum: Boston University is a huge undergraduate school. Therefore, you really have to seek out opportunity and friendships to find them -- it's not the kind of school where everyone knows each other's name. I barely knew the other members of my own major (Neurobiology within the Biology department). However, that's not necessarily the case, as there can be much stronger camaraderie in other departments like the College of Engineering, or even among Physics majors. While there is not a strong sense of school spirit and tradition at BU, unless you specifically seek it out (for example, I was in the BU pep band), I really appreciated the opportunities offered by such a large research institution. I got to break into cutting edge research by connecting with investigators at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. I discovered a passion for data science on top of my aspiration for a career in medicine. Plus, it's BOSTON!!! It's an exciting city to live in while young. ... Read 3,630 reviews

Junior: FSU has a beautiful campus and outstanding athletics. The student body is very diverse and is known as one of the friendliest campuses in the country. The academics are very challenging, but ample tutoring and help is available. The sciences need more professors and better professors and more course offerings. This is something the school should really focus on. Dorms are typical dorms, definitely need dehumidifiers to avoid mold issues. The Greek life is very robust as is the club scene, but plenty of other activities to do and clubs to join outside of those. Sophomore: I have partaken in multiple clubs throughout my semesters here at Virginia Tech where I was able to develop leadership skills that I would have never thought to gain. Out of all the extracurriculars I have partook in, there are a couple I would like to speak upon that greatly impacted my leadership expertise which I can carry onto my future positions. Due to these activities, I took place in, I was able to get the Residential Well-being Student Leader position for the fall and other great opportunities I am grateful for. Texas A&M University

College Station, TX •

  • • Rating 4.06 out of 5   7,810 reviews

Freshman: Texas A&M offers just about everything a college student could look for, unless they want to be a fine arts major. I would like to see more music majors and minors available. The engineering acceptance and registration process for freshman is extremely stressful and unhelpful. The way it’s designed makes it impossible to “figure out,” even with help. It’s luck-of-the-draw most of the time. With the school being so big, there are lots of good and lots of bad things (professors, food, housing, groups). You have to know someone who has figured out how to do well and ask them what professors to take, what places to study, etc. The school offers several resources, but some of them are confusing. If anything, it makes the relationships better because you have to talk to people to figure everything out. The atmosphere, especially around game days in the fall, is amazing, and the traditions do make it feel like more than just a school. It is possible to do very well if you know where to look! ... Junior: I have absolutely loved my experience at The Ohio State University for these past two years. I am actually a transfer student and I was a little worried about coming in to a brand new school halfway through my freshman year. However, all of the amazing faculty at Ohio State made it super easy to transition to a new school. I was able to get involved with student organizations from day one of being on campus. I love how many different ways there are to get involved; there truly is something for everyone here. Since it is a larger school, it is a little more dependent on your own self to get involved and take advantage of all the things that are offered. I also love having the city of Columbus to take advantage of! There are so many things to do and it makes it super easy to get off campus. I also love how proud everyone is to be a Buckeye. Freshman: So far, Purdue University has been a fantastic place to get an excellent education and make new connections. I have made many new friends and made it my second home. So far, I am involved with leadership positions on campus and becoming involved in different cultural events/clubs. Purdue has the resources to become involved on campus, and as long as people are willing to become involved, they do! There are many activities around campus, places to eat, and places to hang out. Even though Purdue is not a big party scene, many events make people feel excited and involved, especially closer to the summertime! Michigan State University

East Lansing, MI •

Alum: I attended MSU as a minority student with about 40,000 in the total student body. This number was comprised of approximately 30,000 Caucasian students. As a minority coming from an urban background where most residents shared my race this was a culture shock. Programs are available to assist minorities but many were student organized and limited to University and Faculty based. I survived because of the Office of Supportive Services. I wish there was a similar program in the Colleges as well as the University as a whole. OSS provided counseling, employment and funding for minority students. It was very difficult understanding the accents of foreign professors and I wish they had more African-American professors on staff. That change alone would have been great to see as an aspiring scholar. As such, culturally would have been more aware of the dynamics of a classroom where I was the only student of color. Ultimately, I graduated in 4 years but I felt like an Alien sometimes! ... Read 6,263 reviews

Alum: I thoroughly enjoyed my overall experience at GWU! Although guidance pertaining to my studies/next steps following my education was sometimes difficult to seek (I graduated with a BA in Psychological & Brain Sciences), professors were receptive to sharing their knowledge on this matter and offered their perspective whenever applicable. It merely seems that a student needs to advocate for themself and actively search for the answers they're looking for -- it won't be offered on a platter. I found this to be the case with GWU's academic advising. Nonetheless, the academics were spectacular. I received a very well-rounded education and was surrounded by a great community. The staff, professors, and students all left a positive impression. Plus, I established meaningful friendships and connections that I know will last forever. Alum: I had an incredible experience at Oklahoma State. The campus is beautiful and the University is always out making it look top notch with landscaping and keeping it clean. The people you’ll meet are what makes Oklahoma State special. Most everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly. I remember being really homesick in the beginning but Oklahoma State and Stillwater quickly became home to me and the people and the the locals played a big roll in that. As for Stillwater itself, it’s a small, blue collar town that slowly is coming up. The people who live locally in Stillwater are just as if not more friendly than the people you’ll meet on campus. Stillwater has a slower pace of living and is definitely more rural but there is still plenty of fun local restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and other activities to go to or participate in with more coming. Junior: I encountered a blend of positive and negative experiences at Auburn. The academic programs are commendable, with knowledgeable and dedicated professors who foster a stimulating learning environment. The city of Auburn itself is delightful, offering a charming atmosphere and friendly locals. However, certain aspects of my experience leave room for improvement. The lack of diversity on campus is palpable, which hinders the opportunity for a well-rounded and inclusive college experience. The campus life, while not entirely devoid of activities, could be more vibrant and engaging for all students' interests. The limited variety of campus food options leaves students with a monotonous dining experience. Furthermore, the lack of housing options on/near campus poses a significant challenge. Finding affordable student housing remains a challenge, adding unnecessary stress to their academic pursuits. Despite these shortcomings, my time at Auburn University was mostly positive. ... Sophomore: I really enjoy the social aspect of the University of Massachusetts. Since it’s such a big school, it’s an amazing way to meet new people and create great college experiences. Another positive is the food provided at Umass, as it is recognized as #1 in college dining. There is great variety and you can definitely get your moneys worth with the meal plan! The only negative I’ve found with the time I’ve spent at this university is the big classes. Of course this depends on your major, but majority of the classes at UMass consist of 200-300 people; very big lectures. It makes learning complex topics even harder and often times the professor push a lot of their responsibility onto the TA’s (student teaching assistants). While some times these extra help opportunities can be helpful, it’s hard to find the time to actually attend these sessions, especially when working a job or trying to balance other classes. Freshman: The University of Alabama has a beautiful campus. There are always fun events and social activities to participate in. I am currently in my freshman year at the school, and so far it has been nothing but amazing. I live in the dorms and walk to all my classes. I am in Greek life and joined informally in the second semester. Not only have I made friends from just going to class but also going to lunch at the dining hall, and where I live. If you don't like parties and going out, there is plenty for you to still do. Many organizations and events have activities where you don't drink or party and you just meet new people and get connected socially. I love going out with my friends and also going to campus events. The campus is very walkable and safe during all parts of the day, but still walk with a friend or buddy to ease your parents' minds. Once you visit the campus there is no going back or going to another school! ... Read 4,800 reviews

Hospitality Management Degrees

A hospitality management degree prepares graduates for a career in lodging management, restaurant management, and more. Successful hospitality professionals enjoy helping others and bring an upbeat attitude to their job. In addition to strong customer service skills, hospitality management requires organizational and business training. A hospitality degree blends classroom learning with experiential training. Learners take courses on topics like hotel and restaurant management, tourism management, and hospitality budgeting. These courses help build the knowledge and skills required for leadership roles in the hospitality industry.

This guide ranks the best hospitality schools and includes information on different types of hospitality degrees and potential careers and salaries for graduates.

Featured Hospitality Programs

Types of hospitality degrees, bachelor's in hospitality management degree.

A bachelor's degree in hospitality management meets the education requirements for many hospitality jobs, including lodging manager and food service manager. Students take courses on topics like hospitality sales, service excellence in the hospitality industry, and hospitality cost control.

Hospitality majors often complete an internship to gain professional experience. Some programs offer concentrations in areas like human resources management and hotel management; these options allow students to further customize their degree to match their career goals.

In addition to hospitality courses, hospitality bachelor's programs include general education courses on topics like communication, English, and math. These courses strengthen critical thinking and communication skills. Most bachelor's programs take four years of full-time study to complete.

Graduate Degrees for Hospitality Professionals

Some employers prefer to hire managers and executives with a graduate degree. Master's in hospitality students may focus on a topic like hospitality and tourism management or hotel and restaurant management.

While pursuing a hospitality master's degree, students complete courses on topics like operations management, leadership in the hospitality industry, and lodging management. Some programs offer specializations in an area like restaurant management or tourism management. Graduate hospitality programs typically combine classroom learning with hands-on experience through internships or practica. Most master's programs take two years of full-time study to complete.

A hospitality doctorate prepares graduates for academic and research positions and generally takes 3-5 years to complete. Applicants to hospitality graduate programs often need a bachelor's degree in hospitality management, business, or a related field.

Master's in Hospitality Management Degree Versus an MBA

Prospective graduate students should consider the value of a specialized master's in hospitality management versus an MBA with a hospitality management concentration. While both degrees prepare graduates for managerial roles in the hospitality industry, they offer different focuses.

A master's in hospitality management focuses exclusively on hospitality and tourism management, while an MBA incorporates general business classes in areas like finance, marketing, and accounting. Candidates considering management roles outside of hospitality and tourism may prefer the versatility of an MBA, while those planning careers in hospitality benefit from the specialized coursework of a master's in hospitality management.

Hospitality Management Programs Ranking Guidelines

We evaluated the top hospitality schools and programs based on academic quality, awards, reputation, independent evaluations, facilities, and internship opportunities.

Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

  • Collapse All

Academics - 75%

Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.

In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.

If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through  contact page .

We thank you for your readership and trust.

Choosing a Program

Prospective students should consider several factors when choosing a hospitality program, including school reputation, program length, and the total cost of a degree. Learners should also consider what type of degree their chosen career path requires and whether a program offers courses and concentrations aligned with their career goals. Our ranking of the best hospitality degrees, which includes hospitality programs at various degree levels, helps prospective students find the right program for their needs.

Why are so many students around the world packing their bags to study hospitality management abroad?

1. Start a new adventure

When you study a program in your own country, the content typically focuses on the business side of hospitality management. But, why not challenge yourself and take your passions abroad and set your sights on a brand new set of skills?

By studying abroad, you introduce yourself to a whole new way of life. You will get the chance to experience a new city, a new culture, and most likely a new language. Naturally, such a big change can come with challenges. But, by overcoming them, you learn the skills necessary to excel in your new program before you even hit the books.

2. Make yourself marketable

According to a broad industry survey , major employers selected what they considered to be the best hospitality and tourism management schools in the world to recruit new talent. Of the top ten schools, seven different countries are represented, including Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.

By selecting a school abroad, you cultivate a global network of contacts and increase your fluency in cross-cultural communication. You also demonstrate to future employers that you are an innovate individual who is ready to take on a challenge and use the skills you’ve learned to excel in a dynamic, fast-paced workplace.

3. Take your education further

Graduate degrees in hospitality and tourism management are also increasing in popularity as industry trends in international, tech, and eco-tourism demand that professionals in the industry stay educated and relevant in order to keep grabbing tourists’ attention.

If you missed the opportunity to study abroad during your undergraduate program, here’s your chance to live the study abroad experience. What better way to get a whole new perspective on life than to introduce yourself to a whole new culture.

What's the difference between Hospitality and Tourism?

The hospitality and tourism career cluster is focused on management, marketing, and operations of restaurants and food services, lodging, attractions, recreation events, and travel related services. While jobs in this career cluster can overlap both sectors, there are some differences between hospitality and tourism that can affect your career outlook.

What is hospitality?

Hospitality includes all jobs related to customer service and travel industries, such as hotel management, food sanitation and preparation, and human resources. A high level of customer service is often required for a position as a manager of a five star resort or conference center.

 Browse hospitality programs

What is tourism?

Tourism is an industry that revolves around travel, with a special focus on how to make travelers feel comfortable and taken care of. If you work in the tourism industry, you may work for a travel company or as travel agents and tour guides.

 Browse tourism programs

While the differences between hospitality and tourism are slight, it’s important to consider which career path interests you the most before deciding on a program. Most programs will combine both subjects and many include an internship or work experience so you’ll have first-hand knowledge of the industry before you graduate.

When deciding which hospitality and tourism management program to pursue, you should try to answer the following questions:

How much time can I devote to a program?

Do I need to travel or relocate to study a program?

How much can I afford to spend on a program?

What skills do I hope to gain from a program?

What kind of certification or degree do I want to receive?

These questions will help you decide whether to opt for an online course from the comfort of your home, a certification in a specific area or topic of interest, or a longer undergraduate or graduate program at a university.

The program you choose will depend on your level - are you looking for an entry-level position or do you hope to advance to a managerial position? You can check job ads that sound interesting to you and search for programs that meet the job requirements.

Helpful advice from hospitality and tourism management graduates

We talked with some graduate students who had recently completed their programs in hospitality and tourism or are currently undertaking it to see what they thought about their program and if they have any advice to share with you.

Hospitality and Tourism

"Since it was a 4-year degree, there were many subjects. I was able to touch all branches of this huge industry and to choose the one that fits the most with my personality and professional objectives."

-   Irati Icardo, Bachelor’s degree in Tourism from Universidad de Deusto

Hospitality and Tourism

“I learned state-of-the-art concepts, obtained outstanding practical skills and truly enjoyed learning from a broad scope of cultural and ideological diversity. I am furthering the career path for my future by developing my skills at Walt Disney World.”

-   Masayuki Kokubun, ACP International Tourism & Hotel Management and Optional Practical Training (OPT) at Walt Disney World Resort

Hospitality and Tourism

"People who study tourism should definitely choose a study program where they can learn at least one different language. I think it is also very important to do an internship in the field such as working for an airline, a safari company or a cruise ship. The program should be international and of course, offer the opportunity for an Erasmus semester in order to meet great people.''

-  Marisa Meschkat,  International Tourism Industry Management at NHTV University in Breda

What questions should you ask a university to find the right hospitality and tourism management program?

We also asked the same students above if there were any questions they asked or wished they had asked during the research and application process to determine which program was right for them. Here were the most common and helpful questions they think you should be asking universities before you apply.

Is the program specialized in certain areas of the tourism industry?

Are there opportunities to take part in an academic exchange program?

Are there any language courses offered?

What should I look for in a university for studying hospitality and tourism management?

hospitality and tourism school

If you’re interested in studying tourism or hospitality at a university level, the best programs combine theory with practice. Independent and classroom study should be combined with practical projects like group work to design your own travel event or marketing campaign.

Get experience abroad

A hospitality and tourism management degree should prepare students for a career in the travel industry so experience in the field is key. Many programs include a mandatory study abroad component that may be combined with an internship to give students experience working in a tourism or hospitality company abroad.

Learn another language

It’s also important to choose a university program with a mandatory language component if you are not multilingual. Being able to converse across language barriers is a huge benefit in an international field like hospitality and tourism.

Take advantage of the available resources

Finally, look for a program that has outstanding resources and facilities. Many programs end in a research project, so a well-equipped library and study space is important. Also consider the staff—do they have experience in the field? This can provide you with the best connections to jump start your career in the hospitality and tourism management industry!

Types of hospitality and tourism accreditation

Now that you’ve narrowed down your list of schools or programs based on the above criteria, it’s important to verify that the school is accredited.

Accreditation is the process of confirming that an institution of higher education meets the strictest educational standards. Accrediting bodies are private, nongovernmental organizations who share the goal of evaluating schools and programs to make sure they meet the highest quality standards.

The benefits of choosing an accredited school are many. Accreditation ensures the highest quality of education, makes it easier to determine the value of college credits, allows students to apply for federal loans or grants, is considered by potential employers, and pushes schools to continually improve. Besides national or regional accreditation, students interested in the tourism industry should look for the following accreditation:

UNWTO TedQual

UNWTO TedQual Certification

The UNWTO TedQual Certification is a voluntary accreditation offered by the World Tourism Organization of the UN (UNWTO). Its objective is to improve the quality of the tourism education, training, and research programs. The evaluation criteria measure the efficiency of a school’s academic system alongside its incorporation of the tourism industry and students’ needs within the program.

THE-ICE

THE-ICE Standards of Excellence

Another accreditation to look out for is THE-ICE Standards of Excellence , which accredits tourism, hospitality, events, and culinary arts institutions. This accreditation focuses on areas like administration, courses and curriculum, teaching and learning, resources and facilities, and much more to recognize and assure institutional excellence.
