About hotel books.

Hotel Books, is an American spoken-word project from Porterville, CA revolving around the poetry of Cam Smith (born February 16, 1993). Hotel Books is commonly viewed as Faith-based, which Cam Smith has confirmed through numerous interviews. The project is often presented on tour as a full band, but has also been shown as a solo project of Cam Smith. They are known for Smith's unique vocal style, which is often the central focus of their work. The band's InVogue Records debut, "I'm Almost Happy Here, But I Never Feel at Home" was released July 1, 2014 via InVogue Records. The album received mostly positive reviews, as well as earning the band their first Billboard chartings, No. 9 on Alternative New Artists and No. 20 on Heatseekers, for the album's debut week. Their latest effort, "Run Wild, Young Beauty," was released on April 7, 2015, and spent three total weeks on the Billboard charts. Hotel Books has toured USA, Europe, and Australia, playing with a variety of notable acts, including Defeater, Counterparts, and Title Fight.

Hotel Books

August 26, 2013 By Keith.Settles in Interviews | Comments closed

Not to many people have heard of Hotel Books .  Spoken word project lead by Cameron Smith, Hotel Books has been imprinting it’s mark on the music scene throughout North America, Europe, and Australia.  I was able to interview Cameron, who is the self-acclaimed Dwayne Johnson of the spoken word genre (I am pretty sure he is being a little sarcastic), and found out what it is like to be a “member” of this project.

Keith:  What exactly is Hotel Books? What do they stand for? Besides an over abundance of t-shirts?

How dd you get your start?

Cam: The members of Silence O Israel encouraged me to try spoken word. I had a rough time in high school struggling with depression, suicide and teen angst. I started Hotel Books as a way to express to others that they are not alone in struggle. Teddy Ramirez booked our first show at CLC Basement in Paso Robles, CA with See the Light and Parley. That was day one of what became a ten day tour through California.

You seem to be on tour quite a bit. How long have you taken your act on the road?

Cam: Well, like I said, our first show was our first tour date. We now tour about five to six months a year since 2011. I am a full time college student so I basically structure my life to where I am either in school or on the road.

Where are some places that you have gone?

Cam: We have toured the west coast many times and have hit the midwest and the south a little bit as well. This summer we did a small run in the west coast, a three week midwest run, and then we did a few weeks in Australia visiting some major cities on the east coast immediately followed by a central European tour, visiting Czech Republic, Belgium, France, Germany and more.

How many albums have you released?  And when are we going to be hearing something new?

Cam: Too many. We basically record all of our music on the road so we end up with a lot of material. We released a full-length entitled ‘Call Me Human’ when we first began, then last November we released a b-side EP called ‘Amid the Beautiful Devastation.’ This year, we released a four song EP called ‘Found Out I’m Not so Brave’ as well as three songs on a split EP with Brave Coast called ‘Finding Home for the First Time.’ We have four official releases out but most of them only containing three or four songs. We are currently recording two new songs for a split EP with Endure from Cape Cod, Massachusetts but do not have an official release date. That will be our final release for quite awhile due to other project we are writing for.

What is the message you want to portray through this project?

Cam: Hotel Books is my best attempt to share my story with others and let them know that they are loved. I went through awful times in my life where I felt nobody loved me, and I want to do my best to assure others do not feel that way. I often write about social issues I see that are holding people back from feeling the Love they deserve. The new split is called “The Spirit is Willing / The Body is Weak” and it focuses on different issues in which people feel like they cannot fix what has been done, when Love is capable of fixing and overcoming any struggle.

You’re big single has been “ Ghost Can’t Love ” right?

Cam: Yes. Ghosts is definitely the most requested/played song but ‘I Always Thought That I Would Be Okay’ is not too far behind.

How many times have you played that song?

Cam: I have performed Ghosts Can’t Love about 150 times at least.

It’s a good jam

Cam: Thanks.. We have a new single called “Empty Courage / Empty Heart” that we have begun playing live that we hope will move up with Ghosts.

You have played with some amazing bands in the past few years, who have been some of your favorites to play with?

Cam: Well, there are two ways to answer that. We have played with some bigger bands which was an awesome feeling but we have also played with some friends who are just pure fun to share the stage with. Playing with Pianos Become the Teeth will always be a memory for me. Touche Amore, Code Orange Kids, Xerxes and Trash Talk were all great as well. We once played with Whitechapel and Napalm Death, that was weird. I once did a ten minute set at a MellowHype show, that was also a memory. We have played and toured with tons of amazing friends as well though such as Brave Coast, See the Light, My Iron Lung, Being as an Ocean, Capsize, The Parousia, Promise of Restoration, Dependence and Papertowns. We did tour with Silent Planet in 2012. That was fun.

The Parousia? Never heard of them.

Cam: Picture if Thrice forgot how to play music and you basically have The Parousia.

If there is one thing you want to accomplish with Hotel Books, what would that be?

Cam: Milestone wise, we would love to play with The Chariot and Pax217 but The Chariot just announced their break up and Pax has been done for years. Realistically, I just want to share my life with as many people as possible and turn our five to six month touring schedule into an eight to ten month touring schedule. We’re just trying to be the first spoken-word band on Psychopathic Records or Roadrunner Records or the first spoken-word artist to win American Idol. Either one of those would work too.

Any last words my friend?

Cam: Yeah, we will be recording a new split and then Nick from Brave Coast and I are releasing some music we have been working on lately. Hotel Books tour wise, Canada, were coming to you next! Thank you to everyone who read this and who listens to Hotel Books, it’s amazing. You are the pulse to this project. Also, keep your eyes open for Kevin’s solo EP that he is working on. You are loved.

Hotel Books, Chapter Two

Originally the brainchild and solo venture for cam smith, a vocalist, slam-poet and spoken wordsmith, he put together a band for live performances and turned out a successful debut offering, i’m almost happy here, but i never feel at home. now, back with run wild, young beauty, the band is poised with experience and continuing to captivate audiences live. smith talks with hm staff writer sarah dos santos about hotel books’ place in the universe.

By Sarah Dos Santos April 2015

On Hotel Books

Cam Smith had a cold. He told me when he called me he had just taken DayQuil and for some reason it was making him drowsy. Medication seems to have a reverse effect on him so he warned me I might receive unfiltered responses to my questions. Excellent. Smith is a very thought-provoking and intelligent man, constantly on the verge of breaking self-imposed chains his fear puts him in. When I reviewed Hotel Books’ new album, Run Wild, Young Beauty, I thought it was so vulnerable and honest to the point of discomfort, just listening to the album; I say this in a positive way. The album digs deep into his vulnerable places, the ones most people don’t dare reveal. It’s why I liked it so much. And Through this interview, I saw his picture come much clearer into focus.

How have the challenges you faced along the way shaped your music? For me, writing is separated into two areas: writing poems for myself and writing poems for Hotel Books. I’ve been writing, in general, my whole life; it’s a form of journaling. Instead of writing a diary of life events, I would write about how the things that happened to me felt.

Since junior high, my poetry touched on different things in my life, and it helped start my music career. It made me realize how God is using this thing I enjoy for a purpose. Writing these poems about deep issues opens my heart, and every poem written comes from personal experience.

I always write in first person, even if it isn’t about me. In one of our songs, I lead into the story by saying, “…and this is what she told me.” I can’t relate to that song. So instead of pretending I could, I became the mouthpiece for her as she expressed it. It’s all about things I feel I have a grip on, from experiences of people I know and my own.

What lessons did you learn from it? I think I wasted three years holding back when first writing for HB. I don’t mean it was a total waste, but I feel like I haven’t always been as honest, and I wish I was. Kids would come up to me at shows and say, “Hey, I went through this and your song meant so much to me.”

I just had this big conflict with HB and almost wanted to stop doing it because it didn’t feel like I was being honest with those kids. I wanted to stop getting attention.

With the new record, I feel like I’ve been more genuine and vulnerable. I revisited so many break -ups in it and these songs really seemed to help fans so I just kept writing them. I worked so much to get through these breakups and now I’m just revisiting those girls. I thought, “What if I wrote a song today as if the break up just happened, even if it was a year later?” Before, I felt empty and hollow but now it’s like I still have all I need. The people who listen to us have inspired me and carried me through these hard times.

There’s even a song where I apologize for being fixated on the past. Maybe I needed to be broken and humbled by listeners. I decided I would write things I’m afraid to tell people about. Kids don’t want to know there’s an answer. Dude, when I was 16, I got sick and tired of people telling me what to do. I want them to know I’m going through the same things, too.

Now, thanks to the vulnerability and how our listeners react to it, I find hope every day. I’ve embraced that God is alive whenever we are in the highs and the lows.

I don’t want to tear apart my line of work, but I’ve been afraid to say this for four years. There is so much shock value with spoken word, and it’s wrong to write songs because you know it will work out for you. It’s tempting to sell out and give people what they want. But the community we’ve built with HB means the world to me. We share in our victories and struggles.

How does your faith in God help you through these challenges? Part of what comes with being in a band is that you must have faith in something, whether you’re Christian or not. You can’t be in a band and not have faith. It takes faith to jump in a van, drive six hours through city after city and hope there’s a show. We just bank on the fact that there will be a spiritual reward and maybe even just one person to inspire me each night we play.

I recently reviewed Run Wild, Young Beauty and was blown away by the atmosphere the album put me in and how vulnerable they lyrics were. Was that difficult for you? Especially knowing your own family, friends and past relationships would hear it? Yeah it definitely was. I think the coolest thing my bandmates have ever allowed me to do is go forth with my sometimes unorthodox ideas that don’t always make sense or money. For the album, I wanted to end it in a powerful way. I want it to be epic and inspiring. The last song screams, “I guess I’ve been caught. I guess this is all I’ve got. I guess I’ve been caught. I gave you all I got.” The song is to everyone who hates me and who has been burned by me or something I did. I’m a passionate person, very guided by what I think is best for HB and sometimes I hurt people and make mistakes. With this record I wanted to say, “God, I’m sorry.” I’m a human being, not a hero. I tried to make amends with the people I wrote about and do the best I could at being sincere and honest.

When it comes to people in my life knowing about my past and listening to the album, they all know. It takes patience for them to know their stories are going out there. They are the ones who have made it possible and I can’t take credit for that. A girl’s break up is now a published piece of work… it takes ambition and courage for her, as it does for me. She deserves just as much credit.

What’s the most important thing you want fans to get out of your music? This is a call to run away from the agendas you’ve carried and run toward love. I think any agenda we subscribe to is something we build in our head and I want to encourage people to choose love as their agenda. I want people to know they are loved and not only that, you can love others. A lot of people have been hurt and the hard times change them for the worst, but if you shift your focus on what you need to do and just love, the healing can begin.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
