Waitlist Policy

  • Publish Date Published on October 1, 2021
  • Post Author by HXP

As long as you remain on the waitlist you can request a refund for the $500 deposit up until August 31st, 2023. After August 31st, 2023 the deposit becomes non-refundable.

If you get booked on a trip from the waitlist you have 48 hours to cancel your spot, and receive a refund of the $500 deposit, after that it becomes non-refundable.

What if you want to get off the waitlist?

  • Take another stab at your preference list. This time, try to specifically find trips that still have availability. Psst—some of our very best countries have multiple locations (i.e. more spots) or are just not as well known. Don’t sleep on trips just because there are still spots left. Log into your Builder Portal and filter by availability to see the trips where you have your best shot. Who knows: maybe where you’re meant to be this summer is nowhere near where you originally thought you’d go. For how to register see here.

2. Dig deep. If you need some added inspiration, try checking out our blog post, How To Pick A Trip.

3. Bring your Mom or Dad. One of our best-kept secrets is if you go with a Parent you get first dibs on trips in each lottery. Some locations may not have availability for Youth Builders anymore but may have a Parent Builder spot! Look for those openings, snag a parent and your chances are much higher. (Heads up, if your parent cancels later, it also cancels you. So don’t try it unless your Mom or Dad is all in.)

4. Be brave. If you’re trying hard to link up with a friend or cousin, consider letting that go. Without fail, the Builders that have the best times are the ones who go on their own and discover a whole new version of themselves in the process. Read more here.

humanitarian xp trips 2023

If you’re still hoping that the stars align and one of the trips from your current preference list opens up, you can hang out on the waitlist as long as you want. (Well, until the last trips of Summer 2023 take off at the end of July.) You can request a refund at any point during that time, until August 31, 2023.

Once booked on a trip you will follow the payment schedule:

$1,500 for international experience & $500 for domestic experience is due January 27th, 2023

The remaining balance is due February 24th, 2023. Each additional payment becomes non-refundable on payment due date.

If you are booked on a trip after February 24th, 2023 you have three days to complete final payment.

If you were previously booked on a 2023 trip and moved to the waitlist, the $500 is non-refundable even if you remain on the waiting list.

Support special needs care abroad on your humanitarian trip

Support Special Needs Care Abroad

Special Needs Care volunteers work closely alongside local staff to promote better health and wellbeing outcomes for people living with mental and physical disabilities, while engaging in a cross-cultural learning exchange with the people you are working with and caring for. Special Needs Care projects are best suited to volunteers of a caring and compassionate nature who are patient, hardworking and willing to help with a range of duties. Medical students or healthcare professionals who are seeking physiotherapy volunteer opportunities are also able to support physical therapy while volunteering at the centers.

Spotlight On Special Needs Care In Sri Lanka

Children and adults with physical and mental disabilities are often marginalized within Sri Lankan society, due to a lack of knowledge and cultural acceptance within the community. Volunteers are placed in special needs schools, homes and care centers within Kandy, a major city and spiritual hub of Sri Lanka. These facilities are under-resourced and benefit from the skills, time and involvement of volunteers. On this project , you will assist local staff in classroom-based activities, general care, play time, and meal breaks. You can be accommodated in a volunteer house with other volunteers, or experience homestay living. The lakeside setting of Kandy makes for a serene backdrop for your volunteer experience. During your free time, you can explore the colorful markets of Kandy, take one of the most scenic train journeys in the world to the lush tea-plantations of Ella, or jump aboard a local bus to one of the chilled out coastal beach towns. When it comes time to leave Sri Lanka, you’ll have a camera roll packed with unforgettable highlights and your memories will speak of the impact your actions have had on the community you’ve become part of.

HEFY nonprofit rebrands to Humanitarian XP

By Alexa Larson

The well-known non-profit organization HEFY, short for humanitarian experience for youth, underwent a rebranding to now be named Humanitarian XP. The rebranding is being well-received.

“We found out that XP is an old symbol of Christ and we thought wow that would be perfect for us. So we changed the name to Humanitarian XP, just to align a little bit better with our desire to follow Christ,” Humanitarian XP CEO Amy Antonelli said.

The organization hopes the name change will help to increase the number of volunteers who may not be members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Our name has always been humanitarian experience, it still is. But you know years ago, people just kind of adopted the nickname of HEFY and I think it’s kind of caused some confusion with the EFY program at BYU because we’re not in any way associated with them,” Antonelli said.

“I think our re-brand is helping us really focus even more so on our mission of changing lives through sustainable service,” Caribbean and Central America program manager Kim Gonzalez said.

“Now with their focus on HXP, Humanitarian Experience, I think that’ll just be a little more obvious and will draw people in more and be like ‘wait what is this, I haven’t even heard of this before,'” trip leader Kenny Ahlstrom said.

The name change isn’t the only exciting thing happening at the organization. Due to COVID-19, Humanitarian XP decided to open up trip locations stateside.

“There is just as much of a need in some places that we go in America as there is in international locations,” Antonelli said.

This year, they will continue to send volunteers to those locations as well as open up new locations both nationally and internationally, bringing their total number of global trip locations to 57.

“It’s just amazing to see, you know, the impact that these kids can make all over the world. Particularly when they sort of align their desire to serve with their understanding of who they are in the light of the restored gospel,” Antonelli said.

With all of the changes, the organization is expecting an immense growth in the number of applicants this year for all positions including youth volunteers, trip leaders and parent builders.

Registration for youth volunteers is Nov. 8-12. More information on Humanitarian XP is on their website .

Trip Costs for Humanitarian XP 2021

  • Publish Date Published on November 30, 2020
  • Post Author by HXP

The cost of each trip is something we take very seriously, and we always have our Builders in mind. Each Humanitarian XP trip is priced by the cost that it takes to run that trip. We negotiate with all of our international vendors to keep costs as low as possible with you in mind. The payment schedule is strict because it coincides with payments that we have to make to the local vendors in each country to make each trip happen.

Payment Schedule:

Pre-registration:  Humanitarian XP pre-registration is a $100 fee that goes towards being at the front of the line for registration. For more information on how registration works,  click here . This fee goes towards the deposit and is fully refundable up until official registration opens.

Deposit : This $500 goes towards the full price of your trip and is due at registration. Full refunds are accepted if the trip is cancelled within 48 hours of reservation.

Halfway : This is exactly what it sounds like: the halfway mark to your trip when half of the total trip price is due. If the amount is not reached by the designated time, a late fee will be applied. The Halfway amount is $2000 (this includes the $500 deposit).

Final Balance : Each trip varies in total cost, since the price is determined by how much that trip costs to run. The complete payment is due by a certain time and a fee is applied if the payments are late. No refunds are allowed at this point.

How to pay for your trip:

You or your parents make payments: As simple as it sounds. Payments can be made little by little, but the balance that is due upon certain dates must be reached by that date.

Friends make donations: We’ve found that friends are often more than willing to contribute to something so meaningful. They can make donations when you give out your personal link to donate on your behalf.

Fundraising: Many of our Builders have gone on trips at little or no expense to themselves or their family simply through fundraising. Don’t let the cost stop you from joining us! Learn more about fundraising ideas here.

TRIP PRICING

Why is HumanitarianXP so much less expensive than other comparable trips? First, we include international airfare in our pricing. Second, as a nonprofit, we price our HumanitarianXP trips very close to what they cost us to run, since no one is profiting off of your trip. Finally, we work hard all year to negotiate great but fair prices in every location where we serve.

Summer service projects spark a new outlook on life for sisters

By Dianna Troyer

Building a new school and refurbishing homes in a disadvantaged city has given a new outlook on life to siblings Sadie and Megan Campbell.

Last summer, the Juniper residents’ ideal vacations were humanitarian missions organized through Humanitarian XP, a nonprofit based in Salt Lake City. For two weeks starting in late July, Sadie helped build an elementary school in Lima, Peru. In late August, Megan refurbished homes in Wilmington, North Carolina, for 10 days.

“I learned I could navigate new situations in places I’d never been before,” Sadie says. “Language barriers can be overcome, too. During breaks, we spent time with local children and their moms at a playground. We didn’t know Spanish but found ways to play with them and communicate anyway. We were all just happy being together.”

For Megan, it was rewarding to help people.

“It also made me think of how fortunate I am and to be grateful for what I have,” she says.

Sadie chose a humanitarian vacation to celebrate graduating from Raft River High School in May.

“I wanted to do something memorable, to go on an adventure that would also have a positive impact,” she says. “A friend told me about HXP, so I went online and registered.”

Ever since it was established in 1999 as a youth program for 14- to 19-year-olds, HXP has organized 900 trips nationally and internationally for more than 40,000 volunteers, including teens, parent chaperones and group leaders.

The organization was launched when Glenn and Elisabeth Bingham wanted their son David, 17, to have a humanitarian experience in an emerging country and gain an insight to life.

Glenn and David went to Santarem, Brazil, where Glenn knew residents from having served a mission there with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When the Binghams’ friends heard about their trip, they wanted their teens to have a similar experience. Participation increased exponentially. The organization now has a staff of 30.

Volunteers pay a fee that covers partial airfare, food, lodging and construction materials. When selecting projects, HXP requires they be self-sustaining with residents or organizations overseeing their continuation after volunteers leave.

To volunteer, teens register at humanitarianxp.org and select 10 places they would like to go. A computer-generated lottery assigns them to worksites.

“Peru has interested me since I was young,” Sadie says. “When I saw Lima was a worksite, I listed it and was so excited when I was notified that I’d be going there.”

Her crew included 18 teens, two parent volunteers and two adult leaders. Before leaving July 20 for the trip, participants were introduced to one another online.

“I wasn’t nervous about meeting new people and being in a foreign country because I’m flexible and easygoing,” Sadie says.

Volunteers met at the airport in Miami and flew together to Lima, where they were picked up and taken to their hotel near the worksite. Previous crews had built an elementary school with four classrooms, so Sadie and others painted the interior and poured cement for sidewalks and the classroom floors.

“The kids and their moms were so welcoming, truly happy to see us and grateful we were there,” Sadie says. “Being with them was my favorite and most memorable part of the trip. On the last day, they had a going-away party for us. They didn’t want us to leave.”

Inspired by her sister’s experience, Megan registered online.

“Sadie received an email saying there were some trips that still needed volunteers,” says Megan, a junior at Raft River High School. “I’d been to Hawaii when I was young but didn’t remember it. I wanted a place to work that was near the ocean.”

In Wilmington, North Carolina, certain neighborhoods have substandard housing, so volunteers refurbished them and helped tend to a community garden.

“One home was unforgettable because the baseboard was missing in some places, and you could see to the outside,” Megan says. “The woman who lived there said wildlife sometimes came into the house through the openings at night. We put in new baseboard to make her place secure. Another family had about a 3-foot drop from their house to the ground and needed a railing and steps.”

Megan and Sadie agree they would like to take another summer volunteer trip.

“I’d like to go out of the country the next time,” Megan says.

Although Sadie is no longer eligible to go on an HXP trip due to her age, she says she would be interested in a volunteer service project that fits around her schedule as a landscape architecture major at the Utah State University.

“Sometime in the future, it would be super cool to find a similar program to HXP,” Sadie says.

Not all service projects require extensive travel. A variety of local needs may be found at www.justserve.org.
