After winning the World Cup after 28 years in front of 90,000 people at Wankhede Stadium, India went to the shores of Australia as the defending Champions.

Squad for the ICC World Cup

With the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli, huge expectation was expected from India’s top order. In the middle, Suresh Raina was accompanied by Ajinkya Rahane. R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the spinners and the pace attack comprised Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneswar Kumar, Mohit Sharma and Umesh Yadav.

World Cup Journey

India’s World Cup 2015 campaign began with the highly anticipated clash Against Pakistan. Opting to bat first in Adelaide, India posted a strong target of 299 runs on the board with Virat Kohli (107), Shikhar Dhawan (73) and Suresh Raina (76) making significant impact in the 1st innings.

In reply, Indian bowlers provided crucial breakthroughs which did not allow the opposition to stitch partnerships which led India win by 76 runs.

In the second fixture against South Africa, India’s batting shine as they posted a target of 307 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Shikhar Dhawan (137), Virat Kohli (46) and Ajinkya Rahane (79) played impactful knocks to give India early advantage against South Africa.

In reply, South Africa did not start well with the bat as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals as India applied pressure on one end. At the end, India won the match by 130 runs.

In the next two games against West Indies and UAE, Indian bowlers did the early damage which ensured India won those games comfortably at the WACA stadium, Perth.

In the next match against Ireland, India was given a target of 260 runs to chase, and the India openers Shikhar Dhawan (100) and Rohit Sharma (64) made sure they win the match convincingly by 6 wickets in Hamilton.

In their last match group clash, Zimbabwe posted a competitive total of 287 runs with Brendon Taylor scoring 137 runs. In reply, India was in early trouble losing 4 wickets at the score of 90.

With the partnership of 196 runs between Suresh Raina (110) and MS Dhoni (85) made sure India won the match by 4 wickets in Auckland.

India completed their group games unbeaten, as they took Bangladesh in the Quarter-finals of World Cup 2015.

India was asked to bat first and Rohit Sharma’s 137 propelled India towards a strong total of 300 runs. Suresh Raina also provided him much support with 74 runs.

In the 2nd innings, Bangladesh never got going in the chase after losing wickets in cluster. India registered a clinical win by 109 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to seal their spot in the semi-finals of ICC World Cup 2015.

In the semifinal, India faced Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground. After opting to bat, the Aussies posted a huge score of 327 runs where Aaron Finch (81) resistance and Steve Smith’s classy knock of 105 deflated the Indian bowlers who had no answers.

In reply, barring MS Dhoni (65), Indian batsmen failed to live up to the expectations and the Team's World Cup 2015 journey came to an end as they lost the match by 95 runs.

India's participation in the 2015 ICC World Cup was an emotional rollercoaster with highs and lows. The team showed great talent and tenacity under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's shrewd direction. Indian players displayed their talent and passion for the game throughout the group rounds and knockout games.

Despite not achieving their ultimate objective which was lifting the World Cup, India's campaign demonstrated their strength and tenacity. The 2015 World Cup journey will forever be etched in the memories of fans, reminding us of the unpredictable nature of cricket and the indomitable spirit of Team India.

The 40th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 was played between India and Bangladesh on Tuesday at Edgbaston. Virat Kohli led Indian team cinched this match by 28 runs. With this, they became the second team to qualify for the semi-finals.

Notably, Australia had become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of this World Cup.

Seventh entry in the semi-finals

The ongoing Cricket World Cup is the twelfth edition of the Cricket World Cup. This is the seventh occasion in these 12 tournaments that India have made it to the semi-finals.

Prior to this, India had qualified for the semi-finals in 2015, 2011, 2003, 1996, 1987 and 1983. However, only thrice has India made it to the finals- in 2011, 2003 and 1983. India has lifted the World Cup trophy twice- in 1983 and in 2011.

India’s World Cup journey

1975- Group stage exit

This was the first edition of the World Cup which was organised in England. India had a disappointing campaign in this edition being knocked out in the group stage itself.

On the other hand, England used their home conditions to their advantage to win all their three group stage encounters.

The final of this edition was played between Australia and West Indies. West Indies defeated the Kangaroos by 17 runs to lift the first ever Men’s World Cup.

1979- Group Stage exit

The 1979 Cricket World Cup was once again played in England. The Indian team performed worse than their 1975 performance, failing to win a single game in the group stage and being knocked out in the group stage itself.

The English team performed really well in their own backyard and went all the way to the finals. However, they were beaten by the West Indies in the final who lifted their second successive World Cup trophy.

1983- Winners

This was the tournament in which India had beaten West Indies in the finals to lift the World Cup for the first time. In this edition too, England had looked good until they were defeated by India in the semi-finals.

1987- Semi-finalists

India did well in this edition, winning five out of their six group matches. However, in the semi-final against England, it was England’s time to take revenge for the 1983 semi-final loss as they defeated India convincingly.

Australia won the final of this edition beating England by seven runs.

India and Pakistan had co-hosted this tournament.

This was the first World Cup win for Australia. They have followed that win with a record four more titles.

1992- League stage exit

In 1992, Pakistan and England played the finals in which Pakistan defeated England to win their first and only World Cup till date. India were knocked out of the tournament from the league stage itself.

Notably, this was the last time when the World Cup was played in the Round Robin format.

1996- Semi-finalists

In arguably the most controversial match in the World Cup history, Sri Lanka were declared as winners of the semi-finals when an Eden Garden capacity crowd lost their cool seeing a dismal India performance.

Sri Lanka went on to lift the trophy.

1999- Super Six stage exit

Although India crossed the group stage phase of the tournament, as soon as they entered the Super Six, their performance dipped and India was knocked out.

This was the beginning of the great Australian dominance in World Cup history.

Australia beat Pakistan in the finals to lift their second title.

2003- Runners Up

India’s only runner-up finish came in the 2003 World Cup when they failed to go past the mighty Australians. India were in fact completely outplayed in the match, losing by 125 runs.

Australia went on to lift their third World Cup trophy.

2007- Group stage exit

In 2007, Indian cricket team had a nightmare of a campaign losing to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and being knocked out of the tournament in the group stage itself.

Meanwhile, Australia continued to dominate the World Cricket winning yet another trophy making it three in a row and the fourth overall.

2011- Winners

India went on to win the 2011 edition of the tournament after defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final. India managed to lift the trophy after 28 years.

2015- Semi-finalists

In 2015, Australia came back to winning ways, clinching their fifth title by defeating New Zealand in the finals. Australia had beaten India in the semis to end India’s World Cup campaign.

With India in the semi-final yet again, Indian fans would be hoping to see India lift the coveted trophy for the third time.

Heartbreak in the Semis: India’s Rollercoaster Ride in the 2015 World Cup Culmination!

india journey in 2015 world cup

After their brilliant victory in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2011, Team India was superbly confident in the World Cup 2015, and it’s only natural. They started their campaign full of confidence under the smart & strategic leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who already had 2 World Cup victories, among other trophies, under his cap- the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011.

Everything was set. India was determined to retain their world championship in the ICC World Cup. And they were winning too- match after match- 7 matches at a stretch. But that ultimate dream fell short of only 2 victories before it could come true, and Team Australia is to be blamed for being the villains in this scenario.

The Indian Squad for ICC World Cup 2015

The squad playing in the World Cup tournaments is the most important one for any country’s national cricket team, and that’s why this squad was chosen with much discussion and consideration. Apart from pure talent, one needs to be in the right form, warmed-up enough to take the blows in the field, have perfect chemistry with the other teammates, be flexible enough to be utilized at crucial moments for the team, and so on.

But having a comparatively younger mindset- flexible and quick to adjust their own style to the situation- and a physically more active team was what Dhoni chose to have, especially after winning in the previous edition of the game. The squad that took India to the semi-final of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2015 included:

  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain/Wicket-Keeper)
  • Virat Kohli (Vice Captain)
  • Ajinkya Rahane
  • Ambati Rayudu
  • Bhuvneshawr Kumar
  • Mohammad Shami
  • Mohit Sharma
  • Ravichandran Ashwin
  • Ravindra Jadeja
  • Rohit Sharma
  • Shikhar Dhawan
  • Stuart Binny
  • Suresh Raina
  • Umesh Yadav

The team did not have Ishant Sharma due to an injury, and he was replaced by Mohit Sharma. It also lacked one of the key players of the previous edition of the tournament, Yuvraj Singh.

Road to the Semi-Final of World Cup 2015

Shikhar Dhawan in ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2015

Being a part of Group B, India had six matches in the group stage- one match against each of the other six members- Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and the United Arab Emirates.

Unbeatable Team India in the Group Stage

India’s 1st match in the World Cup 2015 was against none other than the arch-nemesis Pakistan, and they won by 76 runs with Virat Kohli’s century of 107 runs off 126 balls. From the Pakistani squad, Sohail Khan took 5 wickets in that match.

The next match was won by a whopping 130 runs against South Africa. Shikhar Dhawan carried the baton in that match with a century of 137 runs off 146 balls. Ajinkya Rahane, too, added a substantial amount of 79 runs from 60 balls.

The 3rd match was the time for the ballers as the UAE team chose to bat first. But the Indian ballers limited their innings to a very small total of 102 runs. Most of the credit goes to Ravichandran Ashwin for taking 4 wickets for only 25 runs. India won that match by 9 wickets.

In the 4th match, India beat West Indies by 4 wickets, but it was not that easy, though West Indies scored only 182 runs, thanks to Mohammad Shami for taking 3 wickets for 35 runs. But captain Dhoni’s 45 runs off 56 balls came in handy to save the day.

In their 5th match, India beat Ireland by 8 wickets with 79 balls at hand. The credit for this victory can easily be given to Mohammad Shami for taking 3 wickets for 41 runs, along with Shikhar Dhawan for scoring 100 runs from 85 balls and Rohit Sharma for scoring 64 runs from 66 balls.

Although Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, and Mohit Sharma took 3 wickets each in the 6th & last group match against Zimbabwe, India had to chase down 287 runs. Suresh Raina and Captain Dhoni took the responsibility on their shoulders when the top-order batsmen failed to perform by scoring 110 and 85 runs, respectively.

india journey in 2015 world cup

Winning the Knock-Out Stage by 109 Runs

India beat Bangladesh by 109 runs in the 2nd quarter–final match, or the knock-out stage, of the ICC World Cup 2015. That match and the victory were marred by a huge controversy where Rohit Sharma was given a second chance at 90 runs before he went on to score 137 runs, taking India to a total of 302 runs.

Semi-Final Pulled the Curtains for Team India

After winning 7 matches at a stretch, Team India reached the semi-finals of the World Cup 2015 and faced yet another nemesis, Australia, in the 2nd match of the stage. India lost the match by 95 runs, and that was the end of their World Cup journey for that year.

With Steven Smith’s 105 runs and Aaron Finch’s 81 runs, Australia scored a massive total of 328 runs for 7 wickets. In reply, the Indian batsmen didn’t manage to stay on the pitch for long enough or efficiently enough, except for Captain Dhoni, who scored 65 runs from 65 balls.

It’s natural for a team to lose in a match, but that defeat hurts a little too much when it happens this close to the ultimate victory. India’s journey till the semi-final was more than brilliant- both the ballers and the batsmen shone in a perfect balance to hold their team. But it didn’t work out as desired or expected, till the end.

What went wrong? Nothing, it was just a simple match. Team India had to accept defeat in the spirit of sportsmanship and that it was not their time. Yes, retaining the world championship is every team’s ultimate goal, but there’s no guarantee of success in achieving that goal. And one must not forget that there is always a- Next Time!

India most successful ODI team since 2015 ICC World Cup: Tracing Team India's journey

  • India is the most successful team since the 2015 World Cup with 53 ODI wins and a win percentage of 67.09
  • Since the 2017 Champions Trophy final loss, India has won 10 one-day bilateral series
  • Virat Kohli now has the second highest win percentage among captains who have led in a minimum of 25 ODIs

India's recent success in the one-day international series in New Zealand saw them take the numero uno position in the list of teams with the most victories in ODIs in the last four years.

India beat New Zealand by 7 wickets in the third ODI in Mount Maunganui on Monday to take an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The last two wins also saw India overtake England to register the most wins in the format since the ICC World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand.

India has become the most successful team since the showpiece event with 53 wins in ODIs and has the best win percentage of 67.09. England is second on the list with 51 victories (with a 66.23 win percentage) followed by South Africa (41), New Zealand (39) and Pakistan (35).

During this four-year time period, India has defeated South Africa and New Zealand 8 times, Australia and Sri Lanka 7 times, West Indies and Zimbabwe 6 times, Bangladesh 4 times, Pakistan and England 3 times and won against Hong Kong once.

Since the 2017 Champions Trophy final loss to Pakistan, India has won 10 one-day bilateral series with just the one loss coming against England last year.

The superb form that the team is in right now has translated in a lot of success for Virat Kohli as captain. The 30-year-old now has the second highest win percentage among captains who have led in a minimum of 25 ODIs.

Kohli has won 47 out of the 63 matches he has lead in and has a winning percentage of 74.60, which is only behind West Indies legend Clive Lloyd, who had a win percentage of 76.19 with 64 ODI wins out of 84 as captain.

Kohli joins an elite list of cricketers , which includes four other Indian batsmen. Sachin Tendulkar is on top of the Indian list with 174 50-plus scores in List A cricket. Rahul Dravid (133), Sourav Ganguly (128), and MS Dhoni (101) are part of the list.

Kohli hit a 74-ball 60 in India's successful run-chase of 244 against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui.

Rohit, who will be leading the team in Kohli's absence now in New Zealand, became the fourth fastest (260 innings) after Kohli (219 innings), Sourav Ganguly (257 innings) and Sachin Tendulkar (260 innings) to get to the milestone.

During his knock of 62 runs off 77 balls, Rohit hit two sixes which saw him equal MS Dhoni's record for most sixes for India in one-day internationals. Though MS Dhoni has hit a total of 222 sixes in 337 ODIs, only 215 of those have been hit for India. Rohit now has 215 sixes in 199 ODIs.
