The Best Walking Tours in Lisbon

Lisbon is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s home to impressive museums, historic buildings, picturesque plazas, chilled-out cafes, and a lively mix of clubs and candlelit music venues where people go to listen to traditional fado music. I fell in love with the city as soon as I arrived — and it was even better the second time!

Today, Lisbon is one of the most popular cities on the continent. From cruisers to digital nomads, everyone loves this sunny city. I’ve visited a few times over the years and always look forward to going back. The warm weather, inviting colors, and laid-back vibe really make people feel welcome.

The best way to see the city, though (especially if it’s your first time) is to take a walking tour. It’s the first thing I do when I visit a new city as it’s the best way to connect with a local guide, get insider info, and see the main sights.

These days, there are a ton of walking tours available to ensure you make the most of your visit. Here’s a list of my favorites – from free tours to food tours to pub crawls – to help you sort through it all so you just end up with the best!

Best Overall Tour

I’ve taken Take Walks’ tours all over Europe and it is, by far, my favorite tour company. They always manage to go above and beyond with tours that are both fun and educational. In Lisbon, they offer a few tours (including food tours). I highly recommend their Lisbon in a Day tour. It includes a river cruise, early access to Jeronimos Monastery, and lunch. I think they offer some of the best walking tours in the city.

Lisbon Chill-Out Tours

This informative three-hour free tour takes you through five of Lisbon’s most popular neighborhoods — Graça, Alfama, Baixa, Chiado, and Bairro Alto — offering up an entertaining and enlightening dose of history and culture along the way. The tours also focus on a more local side of Lisbon. If you’re on a budget and want an introduction to the city, this is the tour for you. Just remember to tip the guide!

Here are a few more walking tour options to help you make the most of your time in Lisbon:

Devour started in Spain and quickly began doing tours in Lisbon. They offer a food and fado tour , mixing two cultural highlights of Lisbon on one tour. I personally like the Tastes & Traditions food tour they do. You stop at seven small businesses in Lisbon, eating up to nine samples and sipping three different types of beverages. Devour is one of the best food tour companies in Europe and their Lisbon tours are no exception.

2. Inside Lisbon

This tour company offers a whole range of tours but their Best of Lisbon introductory tour is perfect for both first-time Lisbon visitors and budget travelers. The three-hour tour starts at 9:30am and takes you through some of the city’s main neighborhoods, making a stop for wine and a bite of the famous pastry, pastel de nata (an egg custard tart). The group tours max out at 14 people.

3. City Guru Street Art Tour

Street art has taken over the world’s big cities, including Lisbon. On this three-hour tour, you’ll see some of the best works in the city and learn about the social and political motives behind them. Tours are led by a local street artist too, so you’ll really get an insider’s look at the scene and visit murals most other tours skip.

4. Pancho Tours

Pancho does tours all over the Iberian Peninsula, using local guides and crafting itineraries that focus on street art, tapas and wine, and day trips to places like Sintra. Personally, I like their fado music tour. During the 2.5-hour tour, you’ll learn everything there is about this melancholic music that’s endemic to Portugal. You’ll get a front-row seat at a fado show in the center of Lisbon at the end.

5. We Hate Tourism Tours

Overtourism is a problem in many cities, particularly in Europe, with crowds of people ping-ponging from one attraction to the next. Hence, the idea behind We Hate Tourism Tours: the 3.5-hour walking tour takes you to some way off-the-radar neighborhoods to show you how the people of Lisbon really live. There are only about six people per tour, which keeps things intimate. It also means you should book in advance as tours sell out fast. I love how they are getting people out of the main touristy areas and showing you a real look at Lisbon life. I can’t recommend this tour enough.

Lisbon has a very lively nightlife these days and, if you’re looking for a way to see it while also meeting other travelers, the classic pub crawl is a good way to go. This tour takes you to three spots, with a free shot at the first and the third stop. Plus, there’s a one-hour period of all-you-can-drink cider or sangria. It’s a great option for solo travelers looking to meet other people. It’s not a real “local” thing but it’s fun!

Lisbon Walking Tour (Map, Route + Audio)

In this post, we provide you with a walking tour of Lisbon with a map, a suggested route, as well as an audio tour option.

This walking tour covers the picturesque neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and Chiado. Additionally, we have self-guided walking tours for Baixa , Alfama , and Belém .

Everything listed here is part of Day 1 of our 3-day Lisbon itinerary .

What are Bairro Alto and Chiado?

The Bairro Alto is an unofficial district of Lisbon made up of a series of quaint streets on a steep hill. Words like bohemian and colorful are often used to describe it. 

It was first constructed in the 16th century to house the ship workers and sailors of the city.   

Today the streets tend to be quiet during the day and come alive at night with restaurants, bars, late-night-shops, and Fado houses bringing a festive spirit to her streets.

Chiado is first and foremost a shopping district, with designer labels adorning storefront throughout the district. Nevertheless, most of the sites on this tour are located in Chiado.

And like its next-door neighbor Bairro Alto, Chiado also has a lively nightlife, including high-end theater and opera.

HOW TO GET HERE 

There are several ways to get to either neighborhood and it really depends on where you want to start.

Although we start this self-guided tour from the Elevador da Bica, one of the city's 3 funiculars, you can also take Tram 28 to reach the same starting point in Chiado.

You can also discover the area by taking part in one of the many free walking tours that depart daily from Praça Luís de Camões (#2 on our list).

1. Elevador da Bica

This funicular (tram) runs from Rua de São Paulo to Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto .   

It departs every 15 minutes carrying locals and tourists up the steep and graffiti lined hills of Lisbon to the Chiado/Bairro Alto and Bica neighborhoods of the city.  

The entrance is a bit difficult to find. Look for the sign over the arch on the building of #234 on Rua de São Paulo. Choose the front or rear for the best view of the graffiti-lined streets.

Your Viva Day Pass or Lisboa Card allows you to board for free and without waiting in a queue. Single rides are. €4.10 return

2. Praça Luís de Camões

Although it may lack the grandeur of other squares in Lisbon, Praça Luís de Camões, also called Largo do Camoes, is a favorite meeting spot for locals.

The cobblestone ground is full of images of ships and mermaids, and in the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Luís de Camões, considered Portugal's greatest poet. 

At the bottom of this monument stands eight other figures from Portuguese literature representing the love the Portuguese have for the written word.

Don’t miss the Pasteis de Nata (custard tarts) from either Manteigaria or the award-winning Pastelaria Batalha, both on the square. 

Lisbon’s famous Tram 28E passes through this area.

3. Fado in Chiado

Fado music originated in Portugal in the 1820s in the Bairro Alto, Alfama, and Mouraria districts. 

The style is one of melancholy or mournfulness with song lyrics that often grieve that which was lost or are nostalgic for the past.

Live Fado at Tasca Do Chico

It was the music of the poor - sailors, dock workers, fishwives and others from the working classes. 

Although Fado in Chiado is the most recognized spot to experience Fado music in the area, it has a significant cover charge. 

A more authentic Fado can be found in a smaller bar, one with no cover charge, called Tasca Do Chico . Reservations are suggested. 

4. Chafariz do Carmo

Chafariz do Carmo sits in the center of Largo do Carmo, a historic and picturesque square and one of the most popular in Lisbon. 

Flowering trees from South American, Jacarandas, fill the square, providing shade to those who relax beneath.

This freshwater fountain is cherished because it managed to survive the great earthquake of 1755.

Four pillars rise to meet four arches, while inside dolphins sit atop the fountain itself, in a style of baroque and classical.    

5. Carmo Convent

Just off Largo do Carmo one finds the ruins of the gothic Carmo Convent, a monastic complex destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755.

5,000 books and all of the church's artistic and religious creations were lost as well, and residing clerics were forced to abandon the building. 

Over time various restorations and repairs were made, then stopped in 1834, when religious orders were abolished in Portugal.

This left the naves and transept uncovered and chapels incomplete, with walls and buttresses left open to the sky. 

Today an archeological museum resides in the church’s nave and there are exhibition rooms in the apsidal chapels. 

Tombs of great figures such as King Dinis I (from the early 14 century) and King Ferdinand the I (from later in the same century) can be found on-site, as well as some beautiful and very old artifacts.

6. The Elevador de Santa Justa (Santa Justa Lift)

The most ornate, neo-gothic elevator you have likely come across, the Santa Justa lift, now at over 100 years old, was built to transport folks from lower to upper Lisbon. 

The designer was a fan of Gustav Eiffel and sought to emulate the Eiffel Tower with this wrought iron structure. One makes the trip in a wood-decorated elevator car, up to one of her two levels.

For €1.50 more you can head up an additional two stories to the Viewing Deck.  It’s here you’ll find an unobstructed 360-degree view of Lisbon , including Alfama and the Castle of St. George in the distance. 

If you are already at the top in the Largo do Carmo area, you can directly enter the top-level through a series of stairs.

Entrance this way tends to be much faster, skipping the long lines that form for the elevator. Access this way is free.

Hours :  7:00 to 22:45 (10:45 PM)

7. Cervejaria Trindade

This historic restaurant, residing in a 13th-century convent, is popular with locals and tourists alike.

After religious orders were abolished in Portugal, this space became a beer hall and even today beer is brewed on the premises. 

Inside are two large vaulted rooms, decorated with blue, white, and gold azulejos tile panels depicting the four seasons. 

Orange and gold ceiling slope overhead and family-style tables line the room, and it's here where you sit and enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine including seafood, meats, desserts, and regional wines. 

The restaurant suggests calling if you’d like to discover their dish of the day, served Monday-Friday at lunchtime.

8. Igreja of São Roque

The austerity on the outside of this church belies the extravagant beauty found on the inside. 

With a painted wood ceiling, azulejos, inlaid marble tile, jade, amethyst, gold leaf, statues, and Mannerist, early Baroque, Later Baroque, and Roman Baroque design, one can’t help but be impressed by the extraordinary talent involved in creating this jewel.

The church, still active, was originally built to house a relic from Saint Rocco.

Because of his healing of victims of the plague, King Manuel I believed that this relic might protect his people from the Black Plague. 

A group established to care for the church, the Brotherhood of St. Roch still exists and maintains the church to this day. 

In the early 1900s, a museum was adjoined to the church. Here one finds religious artifacts, an art collection, paintings, sculptures, and a collection of reliquaries donated by a member of the Borga family.

9. Museum of Freemasonry in Portugal

This recently opened museum includes a historic archive of Freemason history in Portugal dating back to 1727.

10. The Solar do Vinho do Porto (run by the Port Wine Institute)

If you like Port, you’ve died and gone to a relaxed and casual heaven. Think wood-beamed ceilings, comfy oversized chairs, and every type of port you’ve ever wanted to try. 

  The waiters present you with a listing of ports ranging from €2/€3 - €20 a glass. Bottles can be purchased as well. One can match your port with a cheese and snack on nuts.

11. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

While construction has been ongoing for years, it's well worth making a stop at the often serene terraced garden. 

It allows for one of the most panoramic views of Lisbon, with São Jorge Castle and its walls, the Alfama neighborhood and city center ( Baixa ), and the ocean in sightlines.

The garden was laid out in the 19th century. In the lower garden, one finds lawn beds separated by walkways and benches.

Dotted across the garden are the busts of known Portuguese figures, and small fountains line the walls. 

There is also a drinks and snacks kiosk with seating. 

The upper level, cobblestone and tree-covered, also has benches and an even larger drink and snacks kiosk with outdoor seating. 

At times a street market is set up, with vendors selling handmade art, home decor, trinkets, and traditional Portuguese food. Don’t be surprised to find artists settled there to paint the cityscape as the wow factor can’t be beat.

12. Elevador da Glória

Designed by the same man who designed the Santa Justa Lift, these cable cars carry passengers up and down the steep slopes of the city.

The Elevador da Gloria is the most popular of the cars and is often packed with tourists and locals. 

The graffiti painted trams descend a steep hill, running close to flats and local businesses, as locals walk the cobblestone sidewalks nearby.

I’m a vegetarian? Can I join this tour? If you are a vegetarian yes, we have alternatives for all the tastings. But if you are vegan, not all the stops will have alternatives for the food we offer, so take this in consideration when booking.

How to book if my group is more then 14 people? You can make the booking for as many people you want, but keeping in mind that the group will be split in different groups with different guides, maximum 14 people per group.

I don’t want to join a group, can I make a booking just for me and my family? We also have this tour as a private option. If you book it, it’s only going to be you and your family with the guide. And if you are staying a 5-10 minute walking distance from the city centre, we can pick you up at your hotel or address. Just follow this link to make the booking.

I’m bringing a baby or a child. Is it possible to carry a stroller? It could be difficult due to cobblestones street and the hills that we’ll walk up and down. To avoid delaying the rest of the group, a good idea is to do this tour as a private walk .

One of the persons in the group is on a wheel chair, is it possible to join the tour? It’s not possible, but you can contact us, because we can give you contact of a specialized tour company that will take you.

What if it’s raining? We do the tour always. Only if there are any alert by authorities saying that there is danger on the visited region, we will cancel the tour (with full refund) or try to reschedule for another date

I love a food tour and this was a great one. Ana Filipa led me and seven strangers around the Rossio district of Lisbon for nearly four hours. We made five stops despite the rain and somewhat gloomy weather. The whole time, Ana was bubbly, personable and friendly. She clearly loves to tell visitors about the food culture of this part of Lisbon and I had a great time. We walked maybe 1.5 kilometers, slowly and with plenty of stops. Marmalada, bifana, codfish pastéis, chorizo, shrimp in garlic, cheese, bread and more. Port wine, ginjinha (with cherries!), beer, vinho verde and red wine. Lots of food, lots of drink. Very interesting and a great time! Tip: If you start with the Delta Air Lines shopping portal and then go to Viator, you'll earn bonus SkyMiles on your tour purchase! We loved our trip to Fatima, Nazare, and Obidos with "the original Carlos" as he really knows his subject matter, and is funny as well as informative. When our tour for the following day was cancelled halfway through the trip, he gave us the phone number to their office so we could try to book with Inside Lisbon for the following day. We couldn't book the same trip that was cancelled, but everyone was raving about the trip to Sintra, so we took that tour instead. The person in the office was so helpful, and the next morning the staff was very kind and they were able to get us on the tour. It was great. I highly recommend this tour company. We were able to meet the "other" Carlos the next day! He was great too!

The Lisbon Small-Group Portuguese Food and Wine Tour with Joana was great! Joana was amazing, knowledgeable, personable and made the experience fun for everyone. The small businesses we visited represented Portuguese culture and food expertly, each worth a visit back to sample more of their menu. If you have one day in Lisbon, please take the time to add this tour to your itinerary, I am sure you will remember the experience for the rest of your life.

We took two tours with Inside Lisbon - my four star rating is for the very good Food and Drink walking tour conducted by Rachel. Considering she had only been guiding for a few months she was excellent! We also took a classic Lisbon walking tour with Jorge two days before that was mediocre at best. Jorge really should not be a guide since he only relayed the minimal amount of information - it felt like he was just going through the motions. We have done much better walking tours that were free in other cities and this one was over 15 euros - it was not worth it. Back to the Food and Drink tour - this was a lot of fun! Rachel not only talked about the food and drink we were sampling but the history of the area, the people of Lisbon, culture, etc. She filled in all of the info Jorge never discussed. At each stop we sampled and learned about different dishes and drinks. Wines, port and the famous sour cherry Ginginjha (spelling?) along with cod cakes, sardines, pastries, etc. This tour was not cheap but it was worth it given the great job by Rachel.

Agreeing with all the other positive reviews here. Our guide for a three-hour walking tour of Lisbon was Caterina. She is a magnificent guide, with intimate knowledge of all the sites and relevant history, and terrific enthusiasm to go with it. Her energy never flagged as we went past the three-hour mark. It really felt like walking around with a very knowledgeable friend, especially when, near the end of the tour, our group was guided into a private social club in the Alfama for a snack of wine, ham, and cheese. Just a great experience, and quite a bargain for what we received.

Definitely recommend this tour company! It first started with some confusion as we booked over the weekend....they accepted our reservation but didn't have enough seats in the van on the day of the tour!. But Inside Lisbon was able to rectify the situation quickly with patience and charm. Another tour guide drove us back to their HQS, quickly grabbed another tour guide, and found us another van...which resulted in a private tour! We had an exceptional and knowledgeable local named Hugo as our new guide. He was one of the best tour guides!  He made the tour memorable even during a pandemic;. he had vast knowledge of the area but focused on the unique history and trivia facts at each site. He shared tips only locals would know, including a little-known hill path that overlooked the bay in Nazare. He made us feel like old friends who were sharing memories and jokes along the way. We had a great experience!

We signed up with this walking tour of Lisbon, Inside Lisbon, because it was recommended by Rick Steve's. It surpassed my expectations. Luíz Pena was very knowledgeable about the history of Lisbon. He was warm and engaging, and we learned so much about the city. We saw key sights, and were shown the crafty back way to get there. By the end of the tour, we had a greater appreciation of the city, it's past and what still is. We also felt like we had made some new friends. Highly recommended!!

The wine and food walking tour was a great experience and far exceeded our expectations. Helder was a great guide-friendly, knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. We visited 5 establishments in four hours (the website said it would be three hours). It was a combination of standing at counters, sampling outside of stores and sitting down inside establishments. We never felt rushed. Our tour was a group of eleven plus the guide. Highly recommend.

Guide at our first stop

My wife and I booked a day tour called Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. There are rave reviews online for Inside Lisbon so I was pretty excited. We had Pedro Pedro (first name is the same as his last name) as our guide and there were about seven people on the tour all together. Pedro was all right. He was able to answer our questions, but I feel as though we didn't get the greatest information and experience. Most of the information he was telling us was done inside the van when he was driving. When we got to Pena National Palace in Sintra, he took us around the outside but to be honest it wasn't too memorable. I don't remember much of what was said. He didn't come inside the castle with us so my wife and I actually learned more from following a couple who had hired a private guide. Inside the castle he gave us 45 minutes. Next, we stopped for an hour and a half for lunch in the city centre. He just dropped us off and we were on our own. An hour and a half is a bit long here. After lunch, we went to Cabo da Roca... the most western point of continental Europe and where the world ended when people thought the earth was flat. Kind of cool and I enjoyed our time there... until it started down pouring out of no where! Half an hour here. After that we were shuttled to Cascais and dropped off for about 45 minutes or an hour. We just walked around the beach area but there wasn't much time to do anything and again, I thought this was a tour. Not a shuttle bus. The Estoril part of the tour was, "That's Estoril over there. We're going to drive through it." Really? You put Estoril as a highlight and it's a drive by? So, in summary there are a lot of awesome reviews on Inside Lisbon for the Sintra/Cascais tour. I'm not sure if we just didn't have a great guide or this is how it is. When it says tour, I assumed we get an actual guided tour. This was more like hiring a driver and going to these destinations while they drop you off, wait for you and then pick you up, while giving you a little bit of information along the way.

Joanne was an amazing tour guide. Personable and down to earth with excellent insights into the history and current status of Lisbon.
