After two years of darkened hotel ballrooms and piles of chairs locked up in conference room corners, the lights are finally switching on. 1. Adventure Travel World Summit; Hokkaido, Japan

Do you sell adventure? Or are you looking to pivot into that niche?

The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) sponsors a summit every year for tour operators, travel writers, industry partners and tourism boards who are involved in the adventure travel industry. But it’s much more than a conference. 2. FITUR 2024; Madrid, Spain

FITUR is an International Tourism Trade Fair organized by IFEMA MADRID. In January 2022, Fitur hosted 600 exhibitors from 107 countries and welcomed over 100,000 visitors. Fitur serves as a meeting place for tourism professionals from around the world. It’s also the leading trade fair for inbound and outbound markets in Latin America.

Fitur targets both mass tourism and niche markets, showcasing new sectors each year as the tourism industry becomes more diverse. It also presents cutting edge technology including artificial intelligence, smart tourist destinations and big data.

Fitur will hold its 44th tourism trade show from January 24th – 28th, 2024. Targeting hotel chains, agencies, tour operators, technological companies, suppliers, transportation and institutions from around the world, Fitur 2024 will focus on how to strengthen post pandemic tourism and how to generate new business opportunities.

3. ITB 2024; Berlin, Germany

ITB takes place at the Berlin ExpoCenter City exhibition center. With more than 10,000 exhibitors, ITB is the largest convention in the travel industry. The convention presents informational stands on countries, destinations, hotels and tourism associations as well as on specialist suppliers, booking systems and transport operators. ITB is a platform for B2B travel industry leaders to meet and network.

ITB’s event will take place in Berlin from March 5th – 7th, 2024. The guest country of ITB 2023 will be Georgia.

4. IPW; San Antonio, Texas

How about a trip to the USA?

US travel exhibitors convene once a year in San Antonio, Texas for the U.S. Travel Association’s IPW international inbound travel trade show. At IPW, US travel exhibitors connect with travel buyers and media from more than 70 countries to share their products and build new business relationships. IPW showcases the American travel industry to its international visitors to promote and increase tourism in the USA.

The U.S. Travel Association’s IPW is the leading international inbound travel trade show. The next convention will take place from May 20th-24th, 2023.

5. ETOA’s Global European Marketplace (GEM); London, UK

For ETOA members only, GEM is ETOA’s annual travel trade event. Not just another tour operators’ event, here tourism suppliers meet new leads and reconnect with existing business contacts. With preset appointments based on business profile and goals, buyers and suppliers meet one-on-one throughout the event.

Participants also attend educational and networking sessions. Close to 400 global and intra-European buyers are invited to GEM’s upcoming event, which will take place from November 2nd – 3rd, 2023 in London, UK.

6. Travel Expo-Travel and Adventure Show

But with travel restrictions lifting, the travel industry is returning in full force. According to a recent Pulse survey , 73% of business travelers agree that a general increase in business travel is extremely likely and 62% anticipate an increase in their own business travel compared to 2021.

Itb berlin 2023: world’s leading travel trade show to take place live again next march in berlin.

Focus on B2B customers and new dates: Tuesday, 7 to Thursday, 9 March 2023 – Big platform for the host country Georgia – Partner event Berlin Travel Festival will augment the leisure fair BOAT & FUN BERLIN in November 2022

Messe Berlin is planning a number of important changes next year to mark the first in-person edition of ITB Berlin since the pandemic began. Instead of running from a Wednesday to a Sunday, ITB Berlin 2023 will take place on three successive days, from Tuesday 7 to Thursday, 9 March . The demands placed on global trade fairs have changed considerably in recent years, which is why in future and in terms of customers, the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show is concentrating its efforts to focus on exhibiting companies as well as exclusively on trade visitors, buyers and the media. As in previous years, the internationally renowned ITB Berlin Convention will take place live parallel with the exhibition on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, with selected sessions live-streamed on itb.com. Virtual services surrounding the live show will round off events.

“By positioning ITB Berlin exclusively as a B2B product we want to make the format future-proof and further significantly enhance the brand as a global catalyst of the tourism industry, said David Ruetz, head of ITB Berlin . “At the same time we are making sure to give our image a necessary boost and improve our existing ties and ability to attract new customers. In the past we have repeatedly observed that the majority of our exhibitors place a clear emphasis on addressing B2B audiences. In future, this move will make it possible to further concentrate their efforts.”

According to Ruetz, the new concept enables ITB Berlin to explore avenues for further developing the trade show and also targeting audiences with additional networking opportunities. Concerning exhibitors, the trade show is announcing the return of a popular event, with ITB Berlin 2023 once again planning to honour outstanding exhibitor representations with the ITB Exhibitor Award.

BOAT & FUN BERLIN is the new meeting place for consumer products

Messe Berlin also has new things in store for the general public and companies interested in B2C business. The Berlin Travel Festival , until now the consumer partner event of ITB, will in future represent the B2C element of the boating and leisure exhibition BOAT & FUN BERLIN, which will take place from 24 to 27 November 2022 on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. The Berlin Travel Festival was previously held at Arena Berlin, parallel with ITB Berlin’s open weekend for the public. With its new concept, Messe Berlin has established dates for the general public, who will be able to focus on a single time period and find the whole range of leisure services, as well as boats, caravanning, camping and fishing products practically under one roof. Big platform for the host country Georgia

Georgia, the official host country, will play an important part at ITB Berlin 2023. Last year, it fascinated visitors as ITB Berlin’s Adventure & Sustainability Partner, and presented its cultural attractions in the role of Convention & Culture Partner in 2022. In May, Georgia was the first destination to host the new TRVLX by ITB event series. On Monday, 6 March, on the eve of ITB Berlin 2023, Georgia will kick off the trade show with a festive opening gala at the CityCube Berlin, which will be live-streamed. The country will also be strongly represented on the exhibition grounds, including at hub27 and in Hall 4.1.

Exhibitors can register soon for ITB Berlin

As of mid-June exhibitors will be able to register for ITB Berlin 2023. By registering no later than 31 August 2022 they can take advantage of an Early Bird stand rental offer, starting at EUR 205/m² (instead of EUR 209 209/m²). The offer applies as of stand registrations being officially announced (estimated to be mid-June). The deadline for registrations is 30 September 2022 . China: Best Travel Trade Shows for 2023

Which chinese travel trade shows should you attend and exhibit at in 2023 many of the top exhibitions are being held this year, but at different times compared to their pre-pandemic schedule. make sure you’re up to date with our event calendar..

One of the top questions we’ve been asked recently is about which travel trade shows are being held in China this year, and which ones we would recommend attending and exhibiting at. While some trade shows that used to take place in China have not yet announced dates for 2023, most of the strongest exhibitions for international travel do already have scheduled offline events.

A majority of these offline exhibitions are being held at different times of year compared to their normal pre-pandemic schedule, so make sure you’re up to date with what’s happening when.

This three-day B2B travel conference and exhibition is one of the best, and most professional events in China. It was held from 2017-2019, and returns to Shanghai in September 2023. The exhibition is organized in partnership with TravelDaily China and includes business and leisure travel, as well as travel technology. It attracts buyers from travel agencies all around China, but is best for targeting Shanghai and its surrounding cities, including Hangzhou and Nanjing.

Even before COVID19, we at TravelNewsAsia.com were cutting down on shows, selecting just a few where it is possible to meet sellers who would not normally be easy to reach as they do not have large enough budgets to attend and exhibit at major travel trade shows.

That is precisely what organisers need to remember. It is easy to pack a trade show with conferences and other reasons to attend etc., but what many buyers really want is to experience a new destination, meet sellers who they would not normally see, do site inspections, new learn things about the host destination and to expand their business horizons.

That is why we are very big fans of shows that rotate the host city/country. Events such as the ASEAN Tourism Forum, TTM+ and others. Though even they sometimes miss the point. For example, we have encouraged the Tourism Authority of Thailand for many years to host TTM+ in a tertiary city such as Khon Kaen, Ubon or Roi-Et, so that instead is just talking about Isaan, they can showcase it to travel buyers properly.

The Cambodia Travel Market in 2019 was brilliant because buyers could sit down with people from parts of the country they know nothing about. The WTM in London and Arabian Travel Market in Dubai remain important as they are very well established. For aviation, it would be Farnborough or Paris, as well as the Singapore Airshow and possibly LIMA.

We would also love to see Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macau develop and better promote an official annual travel trade show for international buyers and media that rotates meaningfully between their cities with the most future tourism potential and not just the cities so many travel buyers have visited already a dozen or more times.

This calendar of events is constantly being updated as more shows confirm live events. Please note that we do not list virtual trade shows.

Some travel trade shows do host buyers - covering airfares and hotel etc., so it is always worth asking whether that is an option and how to apply.

For Asia, the ASEAN Tourism Forum , or ATF as it is more commonly known, has traditionally been an excellent show to attend, especially as it rotates between ASEAN countries every year, allowing you to experience the destinations you are selling. The beautiful country of Laos hosted the ATF 2024 in Vientiane and did an excellent job with buyers, sellers and media all very happy. The Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) has improved enormously over the years and is now an excellent show to attend as it is very focused and gives buyers the opportunity to meet with a wide range of Thai sellers who they would not normally meet. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has done a great job in turning this event into an extremely valuable and must attend travel trade show. In 2019, TTM+ was held at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Jomtien, Pattaya, but was not held in 2020, 2021, though they did manage to host TTM+ 2022 in Phuket. In 2023 the event took place at QSNCC in Bangkok from 31 May to 2 June. In 2024, TTM+ will take place 5-7 June at the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort and Spa . The Cambodia Travel Mart takes place in October every year and TravelNewsAsia.com attended for the first time in 2019, the third time the event had taken place. The Kingdom of Cambodia has HUGE tourism potential. It has some amazing beaches, mountains, jungle and plenty of architectural wonders - such as Angkor Wat and others. Having said that, the Cambodia Travel Mart needs to focus more on the B2B market and get more support from the large international hotel chains and regional tourism bodies. It is very important that this event succeeds, as it is far better for overseas buyers and media to visit Cambodia to attend CTM, than for sellers to travel to an event overseas and compete for their attention against all the other destinations. Cheaper too. CTM is still young, and I think it will grow in the years to come. Should you attend? Definitely, you will meet sellers that you would never normally meet, and get to experience the country at the same time. HD Videos from Cambodia Travel Mart 2019 .

We have only attended one Routes event so far and that was Routes World 2023 in Istanbul, Türkiye. Issues with transport aside, the expo component of this event was excellent. The exhibition floor was spacious and not too loud, with many very creative stands, and a seemingly never ending supply of F&B available. Routes World is obviously a very highly respected event that attracts senior decision makers from airports around the world, their respective tourism bodies and airlines to discuss and plan airline route development. The next Routes event will be Routes Asia which will take place on the beautiful island of Langkawi, Malaysia in February, followed by Routes Americas in Bogota, Colombia in March, Routes Europe in Aarhus, Denmark in April, and the next Routes World will be in Bahrain in October 2024 .

APG World Connect rotates annually between Monaco and Malta and is without doubt one of the most exclusive and glamorous conferences in the airline industry. APG limits the number of attendees and treats each person like royalty. Held in Monaco from 1-3 November 2023, delegates were treated to a 7-minute flight between Nice Airport and Monaco by 6-seat Airbus H130 helicopters operated by Blade . Once in Monaco, those attending - CEOs, SVPs, VPs of airlines and related stakeholders as well as APG offices from around the world - enjoyed some very interesting conference sessions and were thoroughly spoiled throughout their entire stay with delicious 5-star French cuisine, sparkling Taittinger Champagne and delightful Lampe de Meduse Cotes de Provence wines, amongst many other delectable treats. APG World Connect 2024 will take place 23-25 October at the Westin Dragonara Resort in Malta, whilst the company will also hold its annual AGM in Kuala Lumpur and its Asia Pacific regional training conference in Melaka, Malaysia in 2024.

In 2008, Messe Berlin, organisers of the mammoth ITB Berlin, together with the Singapore Tourism Board, put their full weight behind the inaugural ITB Asia . Over the years, it has grown and grown, and continued to grow - at least the events around ITB Asia have. While all this expansion may seem like a good thing, in our eyes - as a media outlet - there is too much going on, with conferences and seminars covering every imaginable topic taking place at the same time. We no longer attend ITB Asia which takes place annually in Singapore, as we prefer to attend more focused shows such as TTM+, ATF, WTM and CTM.

Another important travel trade show in the region is Tourism Expo Japan , formerly known as JATA Tourism Expo. This trade show has the ambitious aim of becoming the biggest in Asia and with Japan being such an important outbound market, even with a weak global economy, then this will always be one of the most important events on a calendar year. Traditionally JATA and the World Travel Fair, also in Tokyo, rotated annually. Now they have combined, and a few years ago they set up an inbound component to the show. This was very big news, as JATA had always been about the important, and lucrative, outbound market, and, had pretty much ignored the inbound. The Tourism Expo Japan takes place annually in September, and is a show you should attend. There are many delegates not just from Japan but also, Asia Pacific and around the world.

The Mekong Tourism Forum rotates annually between countries in the GMS, so from that perspective it is very interesting to see different cities and get updates about the local tourism industry in that area. The event does have potential, but is still trying to figure out the best format to use. It is not really a travel trade show as there are no buyers meet seller appointments - a pity perhaps, nor are there any real exhibitors - again a pity, as it would be interesting to see and meet with small hotels and tour operators in that area. The MTF is more of a conference to promote sustainable tourism and frankly is not currently worth spending money to attend.

The ITB and WTM , held each year in Berlin and London respectively, are two of the oldest and still the biggest travel trade shows in the world. We used to attend both religiously for many, many years, but now, of the two, only attend the WTM in London. The Arabian Travel Market is an excellent show if you are interested in selling the Middle East or attracting customers from the wealthy Middle Eastern markets. To make the most of this show try and do sales trips either after or before the show to some surrounding areas such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain etc.

For luxury, the ILTM series which started in Cannes but has grown in recent years to include Japan and China, among others, is one of the best.

What to expect at ITE HCMC 2024

As the largest and most established annual international travel trade event in Vietnam, the 18th ITE HCMC 2024 will be held under the theme “Connectivity, Growth, Sustainability”, endorsed by Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The event is an annual international travel event that enhances exchanges, tourism promotion and business opportunities for domestic and foreign tourism companies. Moreover, ITE HCMC 2024 will be held in a hybrid format, a combination of physical booths and online events such as 2D Online Booths, and Online Appointment Schedules between international buyers and sellers.

ITE HCMC 2024 is expected to attract over 400 exhibiting companies and 250 high-level buyers from over 40 countries and territories, together with more than 25,000 visitors, all gathering in one place, over the three days.

This US airport remains the busiest in the world

Airports Council International World released the list of 2023’s busiest airports on Monday. 

The top spots this year show how international travel has continued to rebound since the pandemic dip.

“Global air travel in 2023 was chiefly fuelled by the international segment, propelled by several factors. Among these were the anticipated benefits from China’s reopening and a growing inclination towards travel despite macroeconomic conditions,” Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI World’s director general, said in a statement . “The rankings highlight the crucial role these transportation hubs play in global connectivity, commerce, and economic development. Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel. ACI World remains dedicated to advocating for airports worldwide throughout pivotal stages of policy formulation and to advancing the pursuit of airport excellence.”

Here were the top 10 airports by passenger volume in 2023:

• Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), maintaining the top spot with 104,635,151 passengers
• Dubai International Airport (DXB), up from number 5 with 86,994,365 passengers
• Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), down from number 2 with 81,755,538 passengers
• London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), up from number 8 with 79,183,364 passengers
• Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND), up from number 16 with 78,719,302 passengers
• Denver International Airport (DEN), down from number 3 with 77,837,917 passengers
• Istanbul Airport (IST), maintaining its spot with 76,027,321 passengers
• Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), down from number 6 with 75,050,875 passengers
• Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), down from number 4 with 73,894,226 passengers
• New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), down from number 9 with 72,214,841 passengers

Travelers who want to check out some of the popular destinations these airports serve may be able to take advantage of airline stopover programs to do it. Even if a carrier’s home airport isn’t their final destination, many carriers allow travelers to add extended layovers in those cities.

Denver International Airport falls three spots to world's sixth-busiest

Despite Denver International Airport's passenger traffic soaring to new heights, it fell from No. 3 to No. 6 in the 2023 rankings for world's busiest airports, new data shows.

By the numbers: DIA recorded nearly 78 million passengers in 2023, up 12% from the previous year and about 13% since 2019, according to a preliminary report released this week from Airports Council International.

• The increase in traffic comes as the airport has added new gates , security checkpoints , airlines and nonstop flights .

The intrigue: Even though it slipped globally, Denver has held its status as the third-busiest airport in the country for a second straight year.

• Airport officials say Denver's drop is due to the continued post-pandemic recovery of travel demand across other regions of the world, particularly in Dubai, London and Tokyo.

Yes, but: 2023 marked DIA's busiest year on record — the first in which it served more than 70 million passengers.

What we're watching: DIA is working on opening a new east security checkpoint by the end of 2025, which will add 17 new lanes.

• The airport's $2.1 billion Great Hall Project is slated for completion by the end of 2027.

Woman dies after she is found unresponsive northwest of San Luis Port of Entry

On December 11, 2023, at approximately 2:24 p.m., a Border Patrol agent assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol Yuma Station was flagged down by a female child, who told the agent her mother had collapsed and needed help. The agent located a group of migrants near County 23rd Street and the Salinity Canal, just west of the International Border Barrier, located approximately 1.8 miles northwest of the San Luis Port of Entry. Via service radio, the agent reported the incident and requested emergency medical services for an adult female in the group who was on the ground and unresponsive. The unresponsive woman was later identified as a citizen of Peru. At approximately 2:26 p.m., a second agent arrived. Together, the agents initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The unresponsive woman’s husband told agents she had suddenly become ill and fainted approximately 5 to 10 minutes before the agents arrived.    At approximately 2:37 p.m., San Luis Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and assumed care of the woman. At approximately 2:47 p.m., a San Luis Fire Department ambulance transported the woman to the Yuma Regional Medical Center, followed by an agent who established hospital watch. At approximately 3:29 p.m., the Yuma County Medical Examiner declared the woman deceased.    On December 13, 2023, the Yuma County Medical Examiner advised U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) they would not perform a formal autopsy but will release their findings report. The report details are pending and will be released when available.    CBP’s OPR and the Yuma County Medical Examiner are reviewing this incident. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General was notified.
