Trip to ITV Studio
We went to Media City to watch something our Son was involved in and found the whole experience fascinating !! What a lovely place to visit it was very clean and tidy wherever you went, lots to see and do and lots of lovely places to eat and drink would definitely reccomend you to visit this lovely place who knows you may even get to see a Celebrity or get the chance to be in the Audience of one of your favourite shows.
Media City is a wonderful, clean, vibrant collection of tower blocks with a large open space leading to the Quay's water's edge. Everything you need is there - hotel, restaurant, pub serving food and a large, adequate car park over a very nice Booths supermarket. The BBC always overbook shows, so they don't get empty seats. This means you must get there early and, certainly for the more popular shows, queue - sometimes for hours. On one day they had us queue outdoors in a cold blustery wind for an hour or so, before issuing seat numbers, and then another half hour queuing indoors before going to security checks, whereon we spent another hour (at least) before going through to the studio seats. This final wait allows only a few to be seated, the rest just milling around and it gets a bit hard on the legs. The shows are filmed very professionally and guests are treated well, except for the incessant standing while queuing. Sadly, on our two recent visits, half the automated car park machines were out of order, creating long queues late at night for people wanting to drive home.
This area is a very nice entertainment area. TV, thatre and restaurants all are there. Easy to get to by car and by Metro. Security is there for protection in the evening. I felt safe here however even without the security.
We had a nice stroll around Media City around 9pm, it was safe and well lit. went back during the next morning and felt it was ok but we enjoyed it more after dark. plenty of restuarants to choose from in the area and I recommend it for a visit,
Many middle aged people like myself have fond memories of Petra, Shep, and other Blue Peter pets. I'm sure I was not alone when a nation of teens shed a tear or two when Petra passed away in the 1970s. But Petra's memories lived on in the form of a bronze sculptor standing in a prominent place at the BBC's Shepherd's Bush studios in London. When Blue Peter relocated from London to Media City UK Petra moved too, and was given a brand new home in the newly created Blue Peter garden. Many of us grew up watching Percy Thrower help build the original garden, though viewers could never actually see it themselves. Today the garden is on full view, with a replica of the pond we'd seen being built, the hand prints of the presenters of the time and loads if other memorable features. There are clear signs pointing people to it and I looked forward to seeing it myself. But oh what a disappointment it was, Weeds everywhere, unkept borders and general untidiness. Has it been abandoned? Does it no longer feature in the show? Maybe gardening doesn't appeal to today's youngsters but come on BBC don't shatter our illusions like this. Put just a little effort into it - why not recruit a local school to adopt it? Please don't leave it sad and neglected...
Lucky enough to be part of a TV show, treated extremely well. Very clean place. Didn't see much of the place itself as spent 5 hours in a room with no tv or radio and a magazine I'd already read!

MediaCityUK and The Quays
The Quays is Greater Manchester's unique waterfront.
The redevelopment of Salford Quays has created a world-class business, cultural and residential area. More people now work at the Quays than in its heyday as a major seaport. Salford Quays has also become a popular residential area with a regular tram service to West Salford, Altrincham and Manchester city centre. The development of MediaCityUK will continue to build on the area's vibrant economy, fantastic leisure assets and high quality residential buildings.
Progress to date
Key milestones have included the opening of The Lowry in 2000, with its theatres, galleries, shops, bars, restaurant and conference facilities, along with the Digital World Centre and the Lowry Outlet Mall and leisure development.
The Quays has established itself as a tourist destination of choice with a wealth of world-class entertainment, sporting, leisure and cultural facilities.
MediaCityUK
MediaCityUK was designed to provide a purpose-built home for creative and digital businesses.
Centred around a waterfront public realm area twice the size of London's Trafalgar Square, MediaCityUK is a destination in its own right, complete with bars, cafés and restaurants. The development's piazza is designed to accommodate up to 5,000 people, making it a natural focal point both day and night.
MediaCityUK also houses one of the largest high definition studio facilities in Europe, featuring seven high definition television studios and two audio studios (one dedicated to the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra ).
Find out how to get to MediaCityUK .
A wide range of BBC broadcasts now come regularly from MediaCity including Blue Peter, Newsround, Mastermind, A Question of Sport, Match of the Day and Football Focus.
ITV completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK in 2013. Considered a flagship facility for the UK's biggest commercial programme provider, the Orange tower is now home to teams from CITV, Granada Reports, factual, entertainment, drama, post production, The Jeremy Kyle show and various business support services.
Coronation Street is now at filmed at MediaCity from a state-of-the-art production centre next to the Imperial War Museum North.
University of Salford
The University of Salford has a presence at MediaCityUK, with a brand new campus for more than 1,500 students and staff. Specialist courses, designed in conjunction with the BBC, equip students with the skills to help them access job opportunities on site.
The £70 million Soapworks development at Ordsall Riverside is already transforming the former Colgate Palmolive soap factory into a modern and dynamic centre for business, creativity and leisure.
Complementary to the MediaCityUK offer, the project is targeted at the digital and media sector and new business start-ups.
It is estimated that future re-development phases could deliver a further 1,200 jobs.
This exciting new commercial development will deliver 12 high quality hybrid business units providing 43,656sqft of floor space around a 30 metre central landscaped boulevard. Led by Capital & Centric plc , the scheme could support up to 150 jobs. Capital & Centric secured £1.1million from the European Regional Development Fund.
Consultation with the Ordsall Community Forum informed the development of detailed design work and a full planning application was determined and approved by Salford City Council on 5 September 2013.
- Delivery of this project will represent a major European funded scheme in Salford.
- Development now complete
- A critical component of the approved scheme is the creation of a high quality public realm link between Irwell River Park and Ordsall Hall .
HOST, Salford’s Home of Skills & Technology
Located in the south tower of the MediaCityUK studio block, HOST is a place where creativity and innovation can be nurtured and developed. It offers a range of services to help stimulate and support the growth of media companies and has been built around six defining themes:
- advanced digital technologies
- experimental and applied research
- talent development
- a convening space for meetings/conferences
- professional skills development
- flexible workspace
Salford City Council secured £3,775,321 funding to progress the project from the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and a further £6,852,678 under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) which is managed in the northwest by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
- At Salford Quays in 2015, there were approximately 3,500 residents and 900 businesses supporting over 26,000 jobs– around 23,000 more jobs than were lost when Manchester Docks closed in 1982
- The first phase of MediaCityUK offers 70,000 square feet of offices including space for the BBC, ITV and University of Salford and 250,000 square feet of high definition studios (including the largest high definition studio in Europe and one dedicated to the BBC Philharmonic)
- Soapworks has delivered 2,000m² of new office floorspace in the Boilerhouse along with 50 new jobs. Blocks A, B and C will deliver 22,000m² of new office and mixed-use floorspace and around 1,720 new jobs. A further phase of 16,000m² with Block D will deliver a total of 38,000m² of new mixed-use floorspace within the former works

‘The Coronation Street Visitor Centre & Event Space’ Prepares To Open
ITV Studios completes its first ever public facing building as ‘The Coronation Street Visitor Centre & Event Space’ prepares to open.
ITV has announced the completion of their first ever purpose built, public facing building.
The 16, 500 sq ft Coronation Street Visitor Centre and Event Space is situated on the corner of the programme’s 7.7 acre production facility at MediaCity in Greater Manchester and will be open to the public from next month.
As well as being the new entrance to the Coronation Street Tours when they reopen in February, the building is home to a cafe, ITV shop, 64 seater cinema, Corrie exhibition floor and The Inkerman, Rosamund and Viaduct Suites – 3 x conference and event spaces holding from 20 to 150 people. All of which will be available to hire from April 2023.
ITV’s Director of Workplace Services & Estates, Ian Jones, said “The ability to create this kind of space as a live viewer experience, as well as for our own business use, is brilliant. We have designed it as a multi-purpose building giving us the flexibility to not only host events for ITV, including the programme’s story conferences, but also hire out to other businesses and individuals whilst also being home to our Tour’s guests”
James Penfold, Controller Commercial, Global Entertainment, ITV Studios, said “The Coronation Street Tours began in 2018 and we now welcome up to 1200 visitors a day, seeing the building come to fruition is a great start to another bumper year. We can now bring guests to the home of their favourite show in style, alongside giving them the ability to see even more in the exhibition area, have a cup of tea and a light lunch and of course visit the gift shop to purchase some unique ITV merchandise”.
The building will have a formal opening this Spring after full completion of the exhibition space and final fit out of the event spaces.

A guide to Salford Quays & Media City
Home to some of Greater Manchester’s most respected cultural institutions, microbreweries, upmarket eateries and a legacy that gave our city footing on the world stage, consider this the Finest Guide to Media City and Salford Quays you’ll ever find.

As the saying goes, what Manchester does today the rest of the world does tomorrow, and few areas encapsulate the age in which our hometown was the international epicentre of technological and industrial prowess than the docklands. A district that never had a waterfront until someone asked the simple question: “Why not bring the sea to the city?” Within decades, the Ship Canal was built, providing an ocean faring gateway from Salford to the world — a marvel of the 19th Century that was still invaluable in the 20th.
The areas we now know as MediaCityUK and Salford Quays fell on incredibly hard times post-World War II, with the last shipping infrastructure shuttered in 1982. £280million of public and private investment later, and a transformation had begun to create a brand new contemporary commercial and residential development taking advantage of the aforementioned waterways, the opportunity to start over and build state-of-the-art facilities due to all the dereliction.
Skip forward to today and the project’s success is impossible to contest. MediaCityUK is now home to the planet’s biggest broadcasting force, the BBC, Britain’s leading commercial TV network, ITV, and a host of independent film, television, radio and new media companies. Salford Quays, meanwhile, is among Greater Manchester’s biggest tourist and leisure destinations, with key attractions including The Lowry, a prized theatre, art, and exhibition centre, telly-addict haven the Coronation Street Tour, and the starkly poignant and multi-award-winning IWM, or Imperial War Museum North. This is before we mention nearby Lowry Outlet Mall for discount shopping, Old Trafford, the fabled stomping ground of Manchester United, and the cavernous Victoria Warehouse music venue next door.

A minute oddity surrounded by glass, steel and concrete, Gnome Island is as weird as they come. Simply put, this micro-installation features an extended family of garden gnomes who live on a small concrete island floating in the canal. Imperial War Museum North
Luring 250,000 visitors per year, Imperial War Museum North is unarguably bold. Would highly recommend the tour with its new additions including the precinct, police station, exhibition of artefacts and replicas of the interior of the Rovers Return and Roy’s Rolls.
Our guide Sid was excellent – amusing and very informative. All the staff we came across were enthusiastic and friendly.
We had a lovely time, our guide Daniel was brilliant, very informative about the show past and present. We loved our time there had plenty of opportunities for photos, I enjoyed the exhibition at the end seeing all the outfits from characters and the rovers and Roy’s rolls set up. Fantastic would highly recommend.
The Coronation Street tour is great for fans of the show. You get to walk along the famous cobbles and see the outside sets. We chose to go on a star tour and met Andy Whyment who plays Kirk. It was good to see some peices from the set too. Our tour guide Callum was very knowledgeable and made our tour enjoyable. We would definitely recommend this tour.
