My trip to Jeddah’s old quarter, Al Balad , was quite the experience!

My friends and I were keen to check it out, but finding a guide took much work.

So, we just jumped in a taxi and decided to wing it.

Our first day there was a bummer.

We ended up in shabby parts and did not need to figure out where the good stuff was.

However, hey, we are not the type to give up easily.

We returned the next day with some advice from locals and, wow, what a difference!

We stumbled upon these beautiful old streets and buildings that had been done up.

It was a shame the museums were shut, but just walking around and soaking in the atmosphere was awesome.

There is something cool about Al Balad.

It is like stepping back in time – the place has been around since the 7th century!

Finding a parking spot was a mission, but everything was just a stroll away once we did.

Sure, the area has much construction, with scaffolding everywhere, but you can tell it will be amazing when it is all done.

Al Balad might not be your typical picture-perfect spot, but it has its own charm.

Our guide was not much help, but we still loved the vibe of this old town.

It is a place to visit, especially if you are heading to the incredible Al Ula!

Red Sea Mall

It is a premier shopping destination that blends luxury retail with entertainment options, making it a must-visit for shopping enthusiasts.

I had a blast at the Red Sea Mall in Jeddah!

It is a shopping heaven with all the big brands, and the food is amazing.

The place is huge, but it is super clean and never feels too crowded.

Staying open till 1 am is a big plus – I love that I can shop late into the night.

It is also near the seafront, so getting there is a breeze.

They have a massive food court with all kinds of food, a cinema, and a play area for kids.

This mall has everything, whether hanging out with family, meeting friends, or just chilling by yourself.

Just a heads up – it is easy to get turned around because it is so big, so remember where you came in.

King Fahd’s Fountain

I loved my evening walks in Jeddah Corniche.

The waterfront is just perfect for a chilled-out stroll.

It is clean and always buzzing with families and locals enjoying the cool sea breeze.

My favorite part was grabbing a coffee or a quick bite while watching the stunning sunset.

The place comes to life in the evenings.

There are many coffee shops and restaurants, so it is a great spot to hang out, especially if you have kids.

The walkways along the coast are just lovely.

Even though there was some construction around, it stayed within the experience.

It looks like it is floating on water – such a cool sight!

Praying in the open area of the mosque was an experience I will not forget.

The place is clean and well-maintained; they even have some tasty food.

Mall of Arabia

The Mall of Arabia offers a comprehensive shopping experience with its vast international brands, dining options, and entertainment facilities.

I had a great time at the Mall of Arabia in Jeddah.

It is huge and perfect for a day of shopping.

They have a fantastic selection of perfumes and many snack options – I loved the tea and Belgian waffles.

The mall is easy to find and great for a long stroll.

There is a big food court with many different food choices, plus familiar coffee places like Starbucks.

It is well laid out, so finding your way around is easy.

What I like about this mall is how well everything is organized.

The food options are awesome, both in the food court and the other restaurants.

Plus, it is bright and welcoming; you do not get that smell of food everywhere.

It is close to Jeddah Airport’s South Terminal, so it is convenient for some last-minute shopping.

They have got a mix of high-end and more affordable brands.

It is also great for families – they have places like KidZania for the kids.

Biet Nassif

I checked out Nasseef House in the old part of Jeddah, Al-Balad, which was fascinating.

Al Salam Mall

It is a family-friendly shopping and entertainment destination featuring a variety of retail stores, eateries, and leisure activities.

I went to this mall in Jeddah and loved it!

It is huge, super clean, and bright – totally a favorite spot of mine now.

They have loads of shops, restaurants, and a cool food court.

It is perfect for a day out with family or friends.

What is awesome is that it is not just about shopping; there is plenty of entertainment, too.

The prices are decent, and they have got this place called Danube that’s a big hit.

I also found a hypermarket inside, which is super convenient.

There, you will find various brands, including luxury, everyday stuff, and famous restaurants.

It is a one-stop shop for everything you need.

Moreover, if you are hunting for something specific and cannot find it anywhere else in Jeddah, chances are you will find it here.

The mall is big enough for a good long walk, has lots of parking, and is a great place to grab a bite.

I recommend checking it out if you are in the area!

Silver Sands Beach

Its serene, private beach offers pristine sands, crystal-clear waters, and a perfect escape from the city’s hustle.

I visited this beach near Jeddah, and it is a hidden gem!

It is out of the way and tricky to find, but once you are there, it is like being in the Caribbean.

Gorgeous white sand, clear water, palm trees – just beautiful.

It is a great place for a chill day, especially for ladies who want to relax freely.

It is pricey, and you need to book in advance.

It is a private beach, so not everyone can walk in.

They have some water activities, and the vibe is super relaxed and family-friendly.

They might ask for your passport at the gate, which can be off-putting.

However, honestly, the beach is so worth it.

1. Go back in time in Al Balad

Jeddah’s old town of Al Balad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is beguiling, and one of the city’s main visitor draws. With many buildings up to 400 years old, the neighbourhood is undergoing a major restoration project to conserve the traditional architecture, including the distinctive ornate wooden roshan balconies. Visit during the daytime for the best photography opportunities, or in the evening when the area is at its most lively, the narrow streets filled with families out for a stroll, friends drinking coffee and shoppers heading to the souqs.

2. Savour some of Jeddah’s oldest restaurants

As one of the most multifaceted cities in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah is a wonderful foodie destination, with so many culinary influences finding their way into the city’s cuisine. It’s also a great place to try some traditional restaurants, many of which are located around Al Balad. For seafood, head to Al Bassali, where they’ve been frying fish and prawns since 1949. The menu has expanded in the decades since, and you’ll now find grills and tajins too, but you can’t go wrong with the fried prawns, heated with the same secret mix of spices they’ve been using since day one, and even more delicious when dipped in tahini. Go after 4pm and you’ll also find people queuing up for hot-from-the-frier samosas and doughnuts. And try to save space for some masoub , a typically Jeddawi dessert made from bread, banana, honey and nuts that has Yemeni roots. Carnivores will love Naji Al-Harbi’s kebabs, a place that's been feeding hungry Al Balad residents since 1950, and for something more adventurous, Ba’issa is the place to try sheep’s head.

Jeddah’s seaside Corniche is a popular place for a stroll in the evening, with locals gathering for seafront walks towards the King Fahd fountain that shoots water more than 300 metres into the air. Or pick up a rental bicycle in the section of the North Corniche between the Shangri-La and Sheraton Hotels and ride down the street’s pedestrianised centre.

Jeddah provides ample opportunities to pick up fabrics and leather sandals, and the souks around Al Balad have a vast array of both, alongside spices, sweets and fragrances. If you’re in the market for an abaya or kaftan, Serafi Mega Mall is jammed with shops selling seasonal and traditional styles at very affordable prices, ranging from the conservative to the colourful. To see where the city’s style crowd shops, head to one of Jeddah’s concept stores, such as Homegrown Market in the Ar-Rawdah district, where you’ll find more than 150 brands offering fashion, accessories and homeware. Also in Ar-Rawdah, multi-brand streetwear store Crowdless is the place for athleisure and sneaker finds. It’s also right next to the hugely popular Adani Bar, a contemporary cafe serving Yemeni spiced tea. Sit down for a cup, and order a tuna, tomato and caper toastie or a melted cheese sandwich filled with blueberry jam.

6. Head to the Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina for an al fresco dinner

Near Jeddah’s floating mosque and the Formula 1 track, Jeddah Yacht Club is home to a growing community of yachties, as well as several outdoor restaurants that make for lovely al fresco dining spots in good weather. Le Comptoir de Nicole’s flavours are straight out of Nice, with dishes such as: Provençal pissaladière with stewed onions, olives and anchovies; buttery sole meunière ; and, a truffle mafaldine pasta that’s so good you won’t want to share. Over at Mashi no Mashi, the Japanese menu features Wagyu gyoza and sliders alongside substantial slurpable ramen bowls. And at Madeo, Italian favourites such as lobster spaghetti and porcini pizza are accompanied by excellent craft mocktails.

Jeddah ( Arabic : جدّة, also spelled Jiddah ) is on the Red Sea in western Saudi Arabia . It is the kingdom's second largest city, with a population of approximately 3,400,000, and a major commercial center in the country. Jeddah is also the main entry point, either by air or sea, for pilgrims making the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina , the two most sacred cities of Islam. Both are a few hours inland from Jeddah.

The historic Jeddah has been inscribed to the World Heritage list since 2014.

Culturally, Jeddah is generally regarded as being slightly more liberal than the capital Riyadh .

Jeddah has been a port and trading city for centuries, which is reflected in its cosmopolitan mix of inhabitants. Today, it is a major commercial center in Saudi Arabia. It also has many government offices. Jeddah is known in the kingdom for its shopping districts, restaurants and cafes. It also hosts the Jeddah Corniche (waterfront area), which is the largest in the Kingdom with a great bunch of hotels, beaches and resorts clustered around it.

To the north of the city, a string of beach resort compounds are off-limits to the mutawwa (religious police) and are known as party spots where many of the social mores of the rest of the country are flouted, especially by rich, liberal families from Jeddah.

The climate is dry and hot. The best time to visit is on January and February, when it is the least hot.

The sea water becomes quite hot from July to October.

Jeddah is a huge city that sprawls along the coast of the Red Sea, connected together by the Corniche , a seaside avenue full of bizarre sculptures and nearly 30 km long. The old city or al-Balad , on the southern side of modern Jeddah, is a crumbling but fascinating warren of multi-story houses made from coral. The main thoroughfare Medina Road starts from the northern side of al-Balad and runs all the way to the city.

Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) . All Saudi airlines use this facility, including domestic services. Nas Air , a privately-owned Saudi low-cost carrier, also operates domestic and some international flights to and from this terminal. Air France , Korean Air , and Kenya Airways , being part of the SkyTeam alliance along with Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) , also operate flights to and from this terminal.

North terminal [ edit ]

Used by all other international flights.

Pakistan International Airlines has flights from all major cities of Pakistan to and from Jeddah.

Hajj terminals [ edit ]

There are also two special terminals, used exclusively for Hajj pilgrims heading directly to Mecca , which are basically enormous tents of fiberglass fabric on reinforced concrete poles and steel cables. Driving to the normal non-Hajj terminal, you pass between the two. In season, this lets you admire long rows of large aircraft parked alongside the Hajj terminals.

A taxi to the city from either will cost around SR50, so agree on the fare before you set off.

By bus [ edit ]

National bus company SAPTCO [dead link] runs buses from almost all cities and larger towns to Jeddah as well as from a number of international destinations such as Amman and Cairo . However, make sure before booking your seat that you don't have a "by air only" entry visa. Several smaller companies runs long-distance buses too. While there are plenty of "VIP" buses with comfortable seats, journey times are grueling. Travel time from for example Amman is up to 18 hours.

By ferry [ edit ]

Jeddah is one of the major ports along the Red Sea and cargo ships arrive here from all over the world with plenty of choices for travellers, too. Al-Blagha is one of the largest shipping companies and operates several ferry routes, most notable a once-weekly service from Port Suez taking 42 hours (1st/2nd/3rd class SR845/695/395, car from SR850). There's also a service from Suakin, 50 km south of Port Sudan , three times a week with journey time of 10 hours (1st/2nd/3rd SR470/370/300, car from SR460). A more irregular ferry service is available from Al Hudayda in Yemen .

Ferries fill up quick during high season, meaning Hajj and Ramadan, so book early.

A high-speed railway linking Jeddah with Mecca and Medina via King Abdullah Economic City opened in 2018. These trains also serve Jeddah (Naseem) and King Abdulaziz International Airport.

By taxi [ edit ]

Many of the hotels chains have a "water taxi" or a small minivan that will take you to the mall and main shopping areas. Taxis are very inexpensive, with most 10-minute rides costing about SR10-20. There are two types of taxis: one is yellow and will have a sign that says, simply, TAXI. They are usually cheaper, but a little "rougher" on the inside and out and usually are not air conditioned. But they are very rare in Jeddah now. Also, most of them are now air-conditioned new cars. If you're looking for better quality, opt for the white "Limousine" taxis which are of better quality. There is a rule in KSA that a Limousine must not be older than 5 years. So, you find all the new cars in Limousines. Limousine taxis are about $1–3 more expensive. There are also "unlicensed" taxis, which are normal cars (usually a Toyota Camry) without the "TAXI" sign. Those taxis are cheaper than "Limousines" but are not legal. Police take strict actions against such taxis, so to avoid them. Normally they honk or flash lights when they see you standing in street (you can't recognize them as they're normal cars).

It can be cheaper to negotiate a fixed price than to use the meter. This requires some experience with Jeddah and its streets. Sometimes, a taxi driver will pretend to be "lost" as a pretext to turn on the meter or make you pay extra in exchange for his "lost time". Whatever the situation, never consent to pay more than the price you agreed on before the beginning of the ride. Also, some Saudi drivers ask for a higher price and don't treat clients very well, so look for Indian or Pakistani drivers.

Many rental agencies like Avis or Budget will rent you a 2008 mid-size car for the price of SR100-140 per day. You'll also find a bargain when it comes to fuel, as Saudi Arabia has some of the cheapest petrol prices in the world. The streets are wide and signs are written in both Arabic and English. Look for maps in the libraries or big supermarkets.

Buses are not a commonly-used means of transportation in Jeddah even though you can ride one for SR1-2 from certain main streets to Albalad (downtown). It is, however, a very interesting way to enjoy traditional Arab music and the sound of people mixing together all while enjoying sights during the ride. Smaller buses are mostly private so the owner is responsible for cleanliness. Larger buses are provided by the government, which are big and clean but don't follow a schedule, so consider using the smaller buses if you're on a specific timetable.

Boats are not particularly a means of transportation, but rather a way to enjoy the views of the Red Sea. You can catch boats in Obhur north of Jeddah at the marina; a one hour ride in a small boat is around SR200 (US$55).

The Jeddah Corniche offers spectacular views of the Red Sea. Check out the main shopping street on Tahliya for interesting wares, and if you're looking for good quality gold, try the Gold Souq where you can bargain for 18k and 24k gold by weight. The King Fahd Fountain is not only the tallest water fountain in Jeddah, but also the world.

Scuba diving [ edit ]

Scuba diving is a major draw for expats in the Kingdom, although the Saudis themselves seem oblivious to the treasures that await offshore.

Because of Jeddah's location on the Red Sea, the flora and fauna are quite similar to what you'd see on Egypt 's Red Sea Coast or off the Sinai Peninsula, only minus all the tourists.

Visibility can be spectacular (30-40m is common) and the corals are virtually untouched. There are plenty of interesting sites to explore like the Chicken Wreck , a boat carrying tons of frozen chicken that hit the reef and sunk at a depth of 10-18m. Most of the better dive sites are around one hour out to sea by speed boat.

The Red Sea gets chilly in the winter, with water temperatures dropping to 22°C, so you'll want to use a 5 mm wetsuit with hood. In summer, temperatures climb up to a much more balmy 29°C, and 3mm shorty or 1 mm diveskin is plenty.

There are many places to find work in Jeddah and jobs are plentiful, but unemployment among Saudi nationals remains high, especially among the youth population. One must obtain a visa to work in Saudi Arabia and the complicated process can only begin with a sponsorship from a company or individual already located in the Kingdom. Western expats cannot simply arrive in Saudi Arabia and then look for employment, and Western women will experience great challenges in finding employment.

Jeddah is full of restaurants with almost every cuisine imaginable and eating out is part of the city's culture. Some of the restaurants have separate sections for single men and for families. Dating is theoretically forbidden but widely practiced, and most restaurants will allow a couple into the family section without question. All businesses close for prayer for about half an hour at noon and at sunset. They close again an hour after sunset for about 45 minutes. If you like to eat early, you can often stay in a restaurant during prayer time. Saudis tend to eat late, well after the evening prayer.

The standard cheap meal is the shawarma - giant layers of beef or chicken turning on a vertical spit. Thin slices are cut off and served with vegetables, garlic, and sauce in pita bread. You can also find a few falafel shops or eat at boofias (cornershops). Another thing that is very cheap is Homus, which is the paste of white chickpeas mixed with olive oil, and is very tasty. Try the Filipino Souk near Saudia City. Ask for the Pakistani area Kababish. There's a group of shops and restaurants with very low prices. Most of the American Fast Food franchises can be found in Jeddah, including McDonald's, Applebee's, Subway, and numerous others.

Like all Saudi Arabian cities, you aren't going to find much nightlife revolving around alcohol in Jeddah, as the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol are illegal throughout the kingdom. Non-alcoholic beer is available in restaurants as are non-alcoholic cocktails and other drinks. While not as strict as Riyadh, it is recommended that you follow the various safety tips in Saudi Arabia article to stay out of trouble.

Perhaps the biggest danger you'll face is the extreme, scorching heat. Temperatures can reach as high as 52 °C (126 °F) in the summers. Be sure to hydrate often and wear appropriate clothing to deal with the heat.

Floods are not unusual in Jeddah, and they can be both violent and destructive, mainly because the city lacks the necessary infrastructure to protect itself against floods.

When added to the carousel of flavours from the lamb (or chicken), coriander, pepper, cumin, cloves, and turmeric , the resulting dish offers a unique and mind-blowing gastronomic experience.

Usually made with lamb meat, matazeez is a traditional Saudi Arabian dish served in a rich stew . It consists of flat dumplings, vegetables, tomato sauce, and a mix of the following spices:

Loomi (dried limes)
Black pepper
Bahar spice blend

Matazeez is quite similar to margoog. However, the former has a less soupy consistency since the flat dumplings soak up the juices from cooking the dish.

If you like all foods with gravy, you’ll love the Saudi Qursan. This tasty delicacy is made from dried and pressed wheat loaf and is typically served as a side dish for lamb or vegetable dishes.

Intrepid Launches Women-Led Tours In Saudi Arabia

Intrepid’s new women-led tours in Saudi Arabia are about “focusing on the hosts, not just the travelers.”

Intrepid Travel has announced a women’s-only tour in Saudi Arabia — led by women, for women.

The tour represents an effort to sidestep the luxury-focused travel industry in the country while giving travelers a more authentic experience and supporting the booming female labor force.

The launch follows several years of progress for Saudi women, who gained the right to drive in 2018 and to be tour guides in 2019. As the country seeks to become a leading travel destination, the percentage of women who make up the tourism workforce has skyrocketed to 45%.

“This shift had one positive effect, which is that it gave more rights to women,” said Zina Bencheikh, the managing director of EMEA for Intrepid Travel. “[This tour] effectively means that we can speak to women and we can meet women who own businesses, women guides, women who run restaurants.”

The 12-day adventure will bring travelers to female-owned establishments. “I think the beauty of traveling this way is to focus on the hosts, not just the travelers,” said Bencheikh.

Going Local, Not Luxury

The tour involves a family-owned citrus farm, rock formations, and giant tombs. Travelers will visit the holy site Medina, take a tour of Al-Balad in Jeddah with Saudi’s first female guide, and go on a cruise in the Red Sea.

Intrepid partnered with a local agent, Sara Omar, to design the trip. Omar has previously focused on planning trips for Saudi women to experience other parts of the world. Now, she’s helping Intrepid bring the world to Saudi women.

“A lot of people think Saudi women are unable to do anything, that we’re not educated, that we don’t work. Meeting the locals is the best way to understand what the lifestyle is really like,” Omar said, according to Intrepid’s press release.

The tour also taps into something that has been difficult for tour operators to breach in Saudi Arabia – local engagement. While the country has marketed themselves as a luxury destination, many travelers want a more authentic experience.

“I think the country has positioned their tourism in one part of the travel industry, which is that kind of more mainstream luxurious experience,” said Bencheikh. “But in my opinion, they are kind of missing the point. In all the reports we see that what people want is interaction with the local people.”

The Saudi tour is the latest in a series of women-led tours. Others include tours to India, Nepal, Morocco, Jordan and Pakistan, all of which have grown in popularity since their inception.

These tours align with the travel experiences trends Intrepid is seeing, which show that female travelers above 50 are increasingly looking for solo meaningful experiences in lesser visited countries.

Intrepid’s women-led trekking tour in Morocco launched in 2018 and now has 20 departures per year. “If you think about the economic impact for those women,” said Bencheikh. “Some of them never worked before and now they have a job that is paid for by doing something they enjoy.”

Bencheikh said that Intrepid is scoping for locations for new tours, and may have its eyes on Asia next.

Regent Santa Monica Beach opens this summer on a prized stretch of Santa Monica sand, bringing with it a restaurant from heralded chef Michael Mina, a café and boutique from celebrity/entrepreneur Ayesha Curry, a 10,000-square-foot Guerlain Wellness Spa, an oceanfront pool deck and beach butler service.

Regent Hotels & Resorts first opened in Hawaii in 1970. IHG Hotels & Resorts acquired the company in 2018 and set out to relaunch it as a modern upper-tier luxury brand. It debuted new properties like Regent Phu Quoc in Vietnam and revamped others like Regent Hong Kong and Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel . The Santa Monica hotel will mark the brand’s return to the Americas and its flagship in the region.

Take a seat in the airy lobby.

Taking over the former Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, the more than $150 million project channels Beverly Hills glamour and beachfront serenity with designs from AvroKO (whose work includes The Jay Hotel in San Francisco and 1 Hotel Central Park in New York) and Wimberly Interiors (which did Rosewood Baha Mar in the Bahamas and Waldorf Astoria Lusail Doha ). Expect an airy, bathed-in-white lobby and rooms infused with subdued colors like cream and blue.

The accommodations — 24 suites and 143 guest rooms — will start at 720 square feet. Indulgent bathrooms will feature soaking tubs, rainfall showers, bidets and double vanities. Gaze out over the ocean from the 2,180-square-foot, two-story Atrium Suites on the second and third floors, or sprawl out in the largest room, the eighth-floor Santa Monica Presidential Suite, which will have a game room, a living room and four Juliet balconies.

Stay in one of the suites.

Foodies will flock to the Santa Monica hotel to dine at Mediterranean-focused Orla, a restaurant that chef Mina recently debuted in Las Vegas. “Orla is an incredibly personal concept for me, taking inspiration from my childhood,” said Mina, known for spots like Forbes Travel Guide Four-Stars Michael Mina in Las Vegas and Bourbon Steak in Orange County. “The earthiness of za’atar, the tang of citrus and the intricate layers of a perfectly cooked piece of fish or charcoal-grilled meat all take me back to the captivating flavors I grew up with and enjoyed around the table with my family. With oceanfront views and the vibrant energy of the restaurant, guests will instantly be transported to the Mediterranean.”

Rooms have soft hues.

Curry, who collaborated with Mina on his upscale barbecue chain International Smoke, will open an outpost of her Oakland lifestyle boutique, Sweet July, in the L.A. hotel. The sage-hued Santa Monica shop/café will highlight bespoke products from Black- and women-owned brands and a menu inspired by Curry’s Jamaica roots alongside staples like Sweet July signature coffee, tea, pastries and desserts.

“I am so excited to expand our Sweet July experience to the beaches of Santa Monica with Regent,” Curry said. “We’ve curated a very special menu celebrating my Jamaican roots, and I look forward to bringing it to Santa Monica and the iconic Regent brand.”

Enjoy Mediterranean fare at Orla.

Younes Atallah, the resort’s general manager, said Regent Santa Monica Beach will bring a very different experience to the area. “With a commitment to distinguished, bespoke service alongside an alluring oceanfront location, we are eager to share this incredibly special property with the world and welcome guests to indulge in a modern evolution of traditional luxury,” Atalla said.

In its earlier iteration, the Regent brand introduced hospitality innovations like island reception desks, private pool villas and sunken bathtubs. IHG’s newly relaunched version is distinguishing itself with “personal havens” —customized, sleekly designed spaces throughout the properties that encourage relaxing moments. For example, at Regent’s Hong Kong hotel, you can peer out from its tranquil rooms at Victoria Harbour from the deep soaking tub or the long windowfront banquette, and at the Phu Quoc resort, you have the serene poolside cabanas with daybeds nestled amid the palms.

Shop an eat at Sweet July.

Other Regent hallmarks include “with compliments,” a service that showers you with generous amenities (like a free minibar) and helpful perks (free laundry and pressing); the Taste Studio, an interactive, multi-sensory dining experience featuring collaborations between hotel chefs and creatives from the worlds of art, music, design and fashion; and experience agents, who curate your stay based on your preferences.

In the next five years, Regent plans to open hotels in Bali; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Kuala Lumpur; Kyoto; Sanya, China; Shenzhen, China; and Jakarta, Indonesia.
