How to Spend Three Magical Days in Johannesburg: The 2023 Edition

johannesburg tour itinerary

Johannesburg, otherwise known as Jo’burg or Jozi by locals, is a booming metropolis with so much to explore. Unfortunately, many people tend to overlook Johannesburg in favor of Cape Town or Kruger National Park; but I am here to change your mind!

Or at least give you a different perspective.

Often referred to as the city of gold, and originally designed for gold mining, it has now transformed into the world’s largest urban forest and a multicultural melting pot. Johannesburg is truly one of the most dynamic cities in South Africa.

I used to be a bit skeptical of Jo’burg, but once I visited and experienced it for myself, I fell in love. The South African city is the largest in the country with over 8 million people living in it. It has incredible energy and vibrant culture that is worth exploring.

I enjoyed some of the best food in the world, experienced amazing nightlife, explored some of the city’s incredible museums and galleries, visited historical sites, and spent time in nature.

I know what you are thinking. Is three days enough in Johannesburg?

And the answer is ABSOLUTELY! Three days is the perfect amount of time to really get to know Johannesburg and explore some of the city’s hottest spots.

You won’t be pressed for time, so you’ll be able to take your time and fully experience the city. But for more than three days you’ll probably start to feel like you’re going around in circles and you may want to move on.

Jozie is perfect for a cheeky three-day adventure as many international flights land in Jo’burg, so if you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or just the start of an epic adventure, this city is a great place to begin.

So many people sadly skip Johannesburg because they’ve either not heard much about it or have the wrong idea. But with this guide, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running and explore Johannesburg in all its glory!

If you’re a fan of culture and big cities, then chances are you’ll want to stay for longer. But for those with limited time, here is my travel guide on how to spend 72 hours in Johannesburg, South Africa.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Day 1: Soweto and the Apartheid museum

Start your first day in Johannesburg with a journey to Soweto, one of the city’s most vibrant and historic townships.

Many of the tours are on a bike — I took this tour and loved it — and will take you through the town’s main sites, such as Nelson Mandela’s home and Hector Pieterson Museum.

You will learn how Soweto came to be, what was once a place of displacement and suffering is now a vibrant, colorful community that gives visitors a unique insight into the country’s history. During Apartheid, many families were segregated from each other. Now, the community of Soweto is thriving and has a culture like nowhere I have seen before.

Soweto is the birthplace of much of the country’s history, including Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. On your tour, you will learn about the struggle of the people and how they fought for their rights.

Taking a tour of Soweto township is an incredibly powerful experience. It was here that the 1976 student riots began, and these riots are still a major part of South Africa’s history. Seeing everything first-hand can be difficult, but it is also inspiring.

Keep in mind some parts of Soweto look like a traditional neighborhood, while others don’t, you will see people living in shanties and it can be a difficult sight.

So just remember to be respectful and follow the guide!

While you are in Soweto you will see the famous Soweto Towers. These towers are decommissioned cooling towers from a local power plant. They have become an icon of the city, and it is definitely worth stopping by to take some photos.

And if you are feeling adventurous, you can try the bungee jump at the towers! It is a 100m jump from the suspension bridge that connects the two towers. It is an exhilarating experience that I highly recommend!

The tour I took is popular and does sell out, so be sure to book early in order to avoid disappointment! You can check tour availability for your travel dates below:

johannesburg tour itinerary

After your adventure in Soweto, head to the Apartheid museum. This museum is a must-visit if you want to understand South Africa’s history and how it has shaped the country today.

You will start getting a ticket that says either black or white on it. From there you will be forced to enter the museum through the entrance designated for your race. This is a powerful experience that will give you insight into what life was like during apartheid and how it affected South Africans.

The museum contains interactive displays, video footage, photographs, and artifacts that tell the story of apartheid and its aftermath.

Remember, Apartheid didn’t end until 1994. So South Africa is not too far removed from the struggles of this dark period in their nation’s history.

It is important to understand the hardships of black South Africans and how they overcame this system. It can be extremely emotional, but it is an important experience for visitors to have.

As you are planning your trip keep in mind that The Apartheid Museum is open on Wednesdays to Sundays from 9:00 to 17:00. Entrance for adults is 150 Rand.

Day 2: Constitution Hill and Downtown Jo’burg

On day two, it’s time to explore downtown Johannesburg. Start your day on this fabulous walking tour of the city center of Johannesburg.

Your tour will take you through the streets and alleyways of downtown, giving you an intimate look at this bustling city.

Museum Africa, in Newtown, is your first stop, where you can learn about the history and culture of Johannesburg. The museum houses artifacts from the city’s past, including traditional tools and musical instruments.

Your tour will then take you to the Workers Museum – the last remaining municipal living quarters for African men in Johannesburg.

johannesburg tour itinerary

From there, visit Chancellor House to see where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo set up South Africa’s first black-owned law firm.

Your group will head to Main Street to see some of the city’s most impressive old buildings. Once you’re there, follow Main Street until you reach Gandhi Square – a commercial and retail hub that’s always abuzz with activity.

The next stop on your journey is the top of Africa, where you’ll be inside the tallest skyscraper on the continent, The Carlton. Afterwards, you will be able to enjoy a delicious braai lunch in the Maboneng District.

johannesburg tour itinerary

If you don’t know what Braai is, it is a traditional South African BBQ perfect for sharing with others. Enjoy the meal as you are surrounded by street art, cafes, and galleries that make up this lively neighborhood.

This area has been transformed from a derelict industrial zone into one of Jo’burg’s trendiest spots. The walking tour is a great way to explore the area and see how it has been revitalized. So take an hour or so to wander around and enjoy the sights.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Finally, finish your day with a visit to Constitution Hill. This is the site of South Africa’s Constitutional Court, which was built on top of the old prison where many political prisoners were held, including Nelson Mandela.

Constitution Hill is a living, breathing museum that documents South Africa’s difficult journey to democracy. The fortress stands as a former prison and military fort, marking South Africa’s separation from its past. Today, it is home to the country’s Constitutional Court which protects basic rights for all of its citizens.

There is no other place in South Africa that can powerfully illustrate this journey than Constitution Hill. You can take guided tours of the fortress that focus on its history and the fight for freedom. It is an incredibly important place to visit and a must-see in Jo’burg.

johannesburg tour itinerary

After visiting Constitution Hill, head to one of the many delicious restaurants nearby for dinner. Try out the best local dishes and learn a bit more about South African cuisine during your stay in Johannesburg.

And don’t forget to sample some of the city’s nightlife, from rooftop bars to live music venues there is something for everyone in Downtown Jo’burg!

My favorite place to go out is Randlords. The venue is on the 22nd floor which will give you an unbelievable view of Johannesburg with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind and Markets

For your final day in Jo’burg, head out to the UNESCO World Heritage Site – The Cradle of Humankind.

This site is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. It is home to an incredible collection of fossils and remains from some of our earliest human ancestors. Yes, it’s time for another tour !

Tour the caves and explore this fascinating piece of history. Learn about the evolution of humanity and the importance of this site in understanding our past.

Walk around the Sterkfontein Caves, a series of underground limestone caves that contain some of the most well-preserved hominid fossils in the world.

The tour is the perfect way to experience South African history firsthand and understand more about our ancestors and the origins of humanity.

The Cradle of Humankind is also home to some incredible wildlife, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for some of the animals that call this area home.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Finally, finish your trip with a visit to the bustling markets of Johannesburg. Honestly, this was one of my favorite parts of the city.

If it’s a Sunday, you will want to head to the Rosebank Rooftop Market, where you can find some of the best local talents in food, fashion, and crafts. Wander around the maze of stalls and enjoy a bite to eat or a few souvenirs for your friends back home.

If it’s not Sunday, head to the Neighbourgoods Market. This is a weekly market with everything from fresh produce and artisanal cheeses to live music and street food. It’s a great way to get a taste of Jo-burg in one place!

No matter what you decide to buy. Whether it’s a piece of jewelry, artwork, or clothing, there are plenty of unique treasures to be discovered in the markets of Johannesburg.

So that’s how you can spend three amazing days exploring Jo’burg! Whether you want to visit historic sites, shop at local markets, explore the nightlife or just enjoy some delicious food, there is something for everyone in this vibrant city.

Know Before You Go

Just like you, I know that reading travel blogs can help me get ideas about what to do while visiting a new city. But there are always a few things I wish someone would have told me before I arrived as well.

So, with that in mind. Here are a few things I think you should know before you go to Johannesburg!

johannesburg tour itinerary

Where to stay in Johannesburg

Jo’burg has many different neighborhoods and they all offer something different. It’s important to choose a place that is close to the things you want to see and do while also staying in a safe area.

When you are driving around Jo’burg you will notice just about every single home is gated and guarded. Accommodations are no exception and I suggest staying at a hotel or Airbnb that has 24/7 security guards. Staying in an area with good security always gives me peace of mind while exploring the city and I want that for you too.

I highly recommend this Boutique Hotel in Bedfordview. It is a little bit out of the city center in one of the more affluent areas but is still close enough to get around. The hotel offers a great place to relax and it has a beautiful outdoor pool to enjoy your breakfast by. You will feel safe here and it’s only a 10-minute drive to the city center. And if you are needing to catch a flight it is only 13 minutes away from the airport.

The Giglio Boutique Hotel is a beautiful five-star hotel that goes above and beyond for its guests. When staying here I felt like an absolute queen with the huge king-sized beds and the Jacuzzi tubs that are in the room. It’s a great place to stay for those who want the luxury experience and honestly, I didn’t think the price was steep at all. It was perfect for me!

Best Time of year to Visit Johannesburg

Johannesburg is in the southern hemisphere meaning its seasons are opposite of Europe and the United States. The best time to visit Johannesburg is during the spring and autumn when temperatures are mild and there is less likelihood of rain.

In summer, from November to March the city can be quite hot and humid so if you don’t mind high temperatures then this is also a great time to visit. But when I tell you it is insanely busy in summer, I mean it is BUSY!

So many people escaping the cold winter of Europe and the US, come to South Africa. Prices will skyrocket on accommodation and flights so just keep that in mind when planning.

Winter, May to August, is the best time for safaris as this is when most of the animals have their young which makes them more visible. It’s also a bit cheaper than in summer.

The autumn months, March to May, are considered the best overall time to visit Johannesburg as the weather is still quite warm. The temperature varies between 17°C and 23°C during this season, and the sun is ALWAYS shining, making it perfect for exploring the city on foot.

How to Get Around Johannesburg

I am so glad someone had me download the Uber and Cabify apps before I arrived in Johannesburg because it is the most convenient way to get around the city. There are other methods of transportation such as Gautrain, Metro Buses, and Taxis, but they can be quite unreliable and not always safe.

Uber and Cabify are affordable and you can use the GPS on your phone to find out how far away your driver is. I recommend using these services if you need to go to a specific place, but if you’re just exploring then it might be best to take a stroll around the city.

If you’re still unsure, I recommend reserving a car and driver through your hotel. They can help you connect with reliable transportation so that you’re able to explore Johannesburg worry-free.

No matter what method of transportation you choose, make sure you stay safe and never carry large amounts of cash with you while traveling around the city.

Safety Tips for Johannesburg

This is a big one because safety is a huge priority while traveling. I would like to preface this by saying that I felt extremely safe the whole time I was traveling in Johannesburg.

However, South Africa in general is still struggling in the safety department and is experiencing high levels of crime, so it’s important to take precautions.

Here are some tips I recommend:

  • Keep your valuables close to you and out of sight. Become familiar with your surroundings before venturing off so you don’t need to rely on your devices while walking.
  • Avoid walking around after dark or in isolated areas.
  • Don’t carry large amounts of cash with you and be sure to keep your valuables in the hotel safe.
  • If you’re taking public transportation, try to stay in well-lit areas and don’t travel alone if possible.
  • If you’re hailing a cab, make sure it is a registered company and that the driver has their ID displayed in the vehicle.

Overall, I found Johannesburg to be an incredibly welcoming city, but like any place, it’s important to stay aware and be mindful of your safety. With these tips in mind, you should have no problem having a great time while exploring Johannesburg!

I hope this has helped plan your trip to Johannesburg and that you have an amazing time! South Africa is one of my favorite countries and I know you will fall in love with it too. Whether you’re here for safaris, shopping or nightlife, Johannesburg has something for everyone.

Happy traveling!

Tailor-made trips for   South Africa

Johannesburg is South Africa’s most diverse, progressive and energetic city, the country’s best showcase for activism and optimism. There’s really nowhere better if you want to see the face of modern South Africa and get a sense of how far the nation’s come and where it’s going next.

Though the city – like the rest of South Africa – is still dealing with the legacy of racial segregation, it has become a truly diverse place. Walk around Johannesburg and you’ll hear snatches of Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa, but you may also catch some Urdu, Hindi or Chinese.

High-intensity in everything it does, Johannesburg manages not only to be the country’s biggest and the continent’s richest city but also – at least according to the locals – the world’s largest man-made forest. There are some ten million trees dotted around, lending the place a surprisingly fresh and spacious feel.

With a thriving arts scene, well-established café culture and Soweto, the country‘s most populous township, Johannesburg buzzes with entertainment. Not to be missed is the live music- Johannesburg offers the best nightlife in South Africa, attracting top musical performers from around the country and abroad. While bustling neighbourhood markets give you a taste of the local fields, vineyards, brewers, distillers and artisan foodies, with craft and design thrown in.

As sub-Saharan Africa’s economic and tourism hub, South Africa is well served with flights from London and the rest of Europe. The majority of these touchdown at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. From North America there are a relatively small number of nonstop flights into Johannesburg, you’ll have to change planes or stop for refuelling. Upon arrival, there is a Johannesburg tourist information booth at the airport.

The fastest and easiest way to get to the city from the airport – especially during the dreaded morning and afternoon rush hours – is on the Gautrain rail link. Shuttle buses, taxis and car rentals are also available but check with your accommodation first to see if they offer a courtesy service.

Johannesburg’s public transport system is improving fast, with the Gautrain rail and bus network and the Rea Vaya Rapid Transit bus (BRT) system being very well received by city residents. However, driving still remains very much the order of the day in Joburg, though the CBD and some suburbs, notably Melville, are easily explored on foot. Most of Johannesburg’s municipal Metrobus routes start and end at the main terminus in Gandhi Square. Buses only run between the suburbs and the centre, so are useless for getting from one suburb to another, unless they both lie on the same route to town.

If you are wanting to venture outside the city- short of joining a tour - the only way to get to national parks and the more remote coastal areas is by car. Likewise, some of the most interesting places off the beaten track are only accessible in your own vehicle, as buses tend to ply just the major routes.

The short answer is: yes, it’s safe to visit.

The slightly longer answer is that when you explore Johannesburg, some areas are safer than others. The northern suburbs are fine to wander around freely, and downtown areas like Maboneng – a no-go area barely a decade ago – have become safe and exciting models of urban regeneration.

Tourists are most at risk of opportunistic crimes like theft and mugging. The best way to protect yourself is to use your common sense: don’t stand on a street corner with your DSLR around your neck staring at a map; don’t carry all your cash around with you; and if you’re going to a less safe district, hire a local guide.

As you’d expect from a city this size, there’s a lot to do – starting with retail therapy. Other than Melville’s 27 Boxes , a bunch of shipping containers filled with shops and restaurants, the northern suburbs are mostly home to opulent, anonymous malls. Downtown is much more inspiring, Maboneng's Market on Main – a Sunday staple for arts, crafts and street food – and Collector’s Treasury – a labyrinthine, longstanding bookshop – among the best spots.

To get to grips with Johannesburg, try one of the excellent tours on offer. Maboneng Walking Tour , for instance, you’ll discover the transformation of this creative inner-city precinct. To learn about Soweto, try Johannesburg and Soweto Full Day Tour . The knowledgeable local guides will show you both the township’s struggles and its hopes for the future.

The city’s museums include MOAD, the continent’s first museum dedicated to design, and Newtown’s cavernous MuseuMAfricA, with thoughtful exhibits on Johannesburg’s art and history.

Further from the centre, the Apartheid Museum is a nuanced exploration of the history and legacy of racial segregation in South Africa, which is also the focus at the Mandela House Museum and Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum in Soweto. To discover these notable displays of history, join the Apartheid Museum Day Tour with entry tickets included.

In-depth, easy-to-use travel guides filled with expert advice.

The Rough Guide to South Africa

If you’re still (somehow) hungry, head next to Maboneng for memorable African-Asian fusion at Blackanese , a generous Argentine grill at Che , or Ethiopian cuisine at Little Addis Cafe . After dinner, join the young, mixed crowd at Living Room for a sundowner with a view.

Continue your night by exploring Joburg’s thriving jazz scene – Braamfontein institution The Orbit is known as South Africa’s best jazz bar, with Sophiatown’s Afrikan Freedom Station another historic venue. A more recent addition is the Marabi Club , which pays homage to the early 20th-century marabi music scene; the classic cocktails and waistcoated waiters set the vintage vibe.

The northern suburbs offer luxury hotels and prestigious developments, with Sandton the best known – but its international hotel chains and mega-malls could be anywhere. Melville and Parkhurst are less polished, more endearing options with good streetlife and independent businesses; consider Little Forest Guest House and Die Agterplaas .

In the CBD (Central Business District), you could spoil yourself with a stay at the new Hallmark House hotel , in an arresting industrial-style building just outside Maboneng. An excellent budget option is Curiocity Backpackers , right in the heart of the district.

Alternatively, head to Soweto and stay at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers , run by local Lebo Malepa. This sprawling township – about a third of Joburgers live here – is where the city’s non-white residents were forced to live during apartheid. Its history is one of struggle but also of hope, encapsulated by Vilakazi Street, where you can see the homes of both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

Cheetah Standing on Termite Mount © Sekar B/Shutterstock

There are plenty of places nearby to get some breathing space, with the Magaliesberg mountain range particularly popular with Joburgers – head to Hartbeespoort Dam to get a cable car straight up into the mountains. Relax afterwards at Silver Orange Bistro, with its contemporary South African cuisine, wine list long enough for repeat visits, and gorgeous setting in an orange orchard.

If you’re after adrenaline rather than R&R, try Ama Zwing Zwing , a great zipline experience under an hour’s drive from the city; the larger Canopy Tour Magaliesberg is about an hour and a half. For hiking and biking, make a beeline for the forty square kilometres of Kgaswane Mountain Reserve. You can camp overnight and follow the Rustenberg Hiking Trail for a couple of days, or explore one of the shorter routes.

The archaeological sites of the Cradle of Humankind are easily accessible from Joburg; the Sterkfontein Caves, where Mrs Ples and Little Foot (Australopithecus fossils) were found, are a highlight. At the Maropeng Museum you can see the incredible homo Naledi fossils excavated in the area – plus a fascinating video about their discovery in a tiny chamber almost 100 feet underground (claustrophobes should cover their eyes).

Going on safari in the malaria-free reserves of North West Province is another great way to escape the city. Madikwe is an excellent reserve near the Botswana border and is refreshingly uncrowded as no independent day visits are allowed (you have to book through one of the lodges).

To safari independently you should head to Pilanesberg , just a couple of hours’ drive from Joburg. That said, you’ll still get the most memorable experience by staying at a lodge – Kwa Maritane and Bakubung are great choices for their experienced rangers who will impress you with their knowledge on a game drive or bush walk.

This brief Johannesburg tourist guide gives you a solid start to your adventures in this energetic city.

48 Hours in Johannesburg

48 Hours in Johannesburg: The Ultimate Itinerary

johannesburg tour itinerary

As the home of the busiest international airport in South Africa , many visitors view Johannesburg as little more than a gateway to the rest of the country. However, there are many reasons to extend your layover in buzzing, bustling Jozi. Those interested in South African history will discover a treasure trove of gold rush, apartheid, and Mandela landmarks. Townships like Soweto give visitors the opportunity to experience how the majority of South Africans really live; while the art galleries, gourmet restaurants, and fashion boutiques of upmarket neighborhoods like Maboneng and Rosebank provide evidence of a cultural revolution underway. Here’s how we recommend spending 48 hours in South Africa’s largest city.

Day 1: Morning

bucky_za/Getty Images

8 a.m.: After touching down at O.R. Tambo International Airport , catch an Uber to the fashionable northern suburb of Rosebank . With its tree-lined streets, Art Deco architecture, and thriving restaurant scene, it’s the perfect base for your Joburg adventure. Check in at Home Suite Home Bristol Rosebank . This boutique hotel has 28 spacious designer suites with a rooftop pool bar. Resist the urge to collapse onto your extra-length king-size bed, then head to the 24-hour snack larder to refuel before the first leg of your whistle-stop tour.

9:30 a.m.: Johannesburg was founded during the 1886 Witwatersrand gold rush, so where better to start than at Gold Reef City. This iconic theme park is designed as a replica of the original miner’s town that started it all, but you’re not here for the rollercoasters today. Instead, you’re here to join the Jozi’s Story of Gold guided heritage tour, which takes you 245 feet underground into an old gold mine. Learn about the prospectors who gave up everything to travel to the reef in search of their fortunes, then watch a live gold pouring demonstration before trying your luck at the panning station. The first tour of the day starts at 9:30 a.m. and lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Afterward, grab a bite to eat at one of the many Gold Reef City restaurants. We recommend Calisto’s for Portuguese-style chicken and peri-peri prawns.

Day 1: Afternoon

Raymond June/Flickr.com/CC BY-ND 2.0

1 p.m.: After lunch, the next stop is the Apartheid Museum . You won’t have to travel far, as it’s also part of Gold Reef City. This is the best place in the country to learn about apartheid, the four-decade-long period of racial segregation and discrimination that inspired the fight for freedom and shaped South African society as we know it today. Before entering the museum, tourists are arbitrarily divided and made to enter through separate doorways for whites and non-whites, giving them a taste of what life was like for people of color during the apartheid regime. Inside, permanent exhibitions use film footage, photographs, text panels, and other artifacts to educate visitors about themes, including the Black homelands, the armed struggle for democracy, and the 1994 election in which Nelson Mandela became the country’s first democratically elected Black president.

Mandela’s roles as a comrade, leader, prisoner, negotiator, and statesman are covered in a separate exhibition dedicated to his life. The Apartheid Museum is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and we recommend that you spend at least 1.5 hours here.

3 p.m.: From the Apartheid Museum, it’s a 30-minute Uber ride back to Braamfontein district in the city center. You’ll be just in time to catch a matinée performance at the Joburg Theatre , home of the Joburg Ballet. In addition to ballet performances, the theater also hosts hit Broadway and West End musicals, traditional African music and dance showcases, and concerts by major South African and international artists. If you happen to be traveling to Joburg with children during the Christmas holiday period, make sure to enquire about the theater’s incredibly popular festive pantomimes.

Day 1: Evening

7 p.m.: With night falling over the city, it’s time to sample Joburg’s eclectic culinary scene. Kitamu , located in nearby entertainment precinct Melrose Arch, offers a gourmet take on traditional recipes from across South Africa and the African continent. The decor and music reflect the restaurant’s tribal inspiration, while the menu is a procession of local delicacies . To start, try a crocodile pie or (if you’re feeling extraordinarily brave), fried mopane worms . Main courses cover the full spectrum of African cuisines, from Moroccan tagines to Durban bunny chows , while the dessert menu reads like the recipe book of a traditional Afrikaans housewife. We’re particularly fond of the malva pudding, though the koeksisters (deep-fried plaits of syrup-coated dough) are a close second.

9 p.m.: If you find that all that sugar has given you a second wind, extend the evening’s festivities with a stop at trend-setting tapas and cocktail bar A Streetbar Named Desire . The beautiful city views from the upstairs deck provide the perfect backdrop for a cocktail menu filled with inventively named drinks that sound as delicious as they taste. For something uniquely South African, try the Rooibos Old Fashioned, made with bourbon, chocolate bitters, and rooibos syrup. If cocktails aren't your thing, don’t worry; the bar also serves a great selection of craft spirits, local beers, and wines by the glass. Streetbar Named Desire stays open until late from Tuesday to Saturday. At the end of the night, it’s a five-minute drive back to the hotel.

Day 2: Morning

9:30 a.m.: After breakfast at the hotel, settle in for a 30-minute Uber ride to Soweto. Here, you’ll join a half-day tour of South Africa’s largest informal settlement with local operator Soweto Guided Tours . The tour includes a visit with a resident in Kliptown, who will describe what it’s like to live below the poverty line in one of the poorest parts of Johannesburg. You'll stop at the Hector Pieterson Museum , named in honor of the Black schoolboy, who became an international symbol of apartheid when he was shot and killed by police during a student protest on June 16, 1976. The highlight for many people is the visit to Mandela House on Vilakazi Street, where the former president lived before his arrest in 1962. It’s now a museum filled with memorabilia from his time there.

The former home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu is also located on Vilakazi Street, making it the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners. The four-hour tour starts at 9:30 a.m. and costs 650 South African Rand ($43) per person. Make sure to book well in advance.

Day 2: Afternoon

2 p.m.: By the time the tour ends, you’ll probably be desperate for something to eat. Hotfoot it back to the city center, where the lively, ultra-chic Maboneng Precinct awaits discovery. Named after the Sotho word meaning ‘place of light,’ Maboneng is a rejuvenated industrial district filled with artisan eateries and coffee shops, art galleries, and clothing boutiques that represent the cutting edge of Jozi fashion. First things first: lunch. Our favorite options include Little Addis, where you can tuck into traditional Ethiopian injera platters using your fingers, and Eat Your Heart Out. The latter is Joburg’s version of a Jewish deli, with great options for vegetarian, vegan, Banting, and gluten-free diets alongside traditional pastrami on rye.

After lunch, take the time to explore Maboneng’s Arts on Main complex. Here, historic warehouses have been converted into a series of art galleries and studios, making it the spot for picking up out-of-the-ordinary South African souvenirs. If your visit happens to be on a Sunday, you’ll also be able to browse stalls selling locally produced food and fashion at Market on Main.

4 p.m.: With your cultural appetite whetted by Arts on Main, it’s time to pay a visit to Johannesburg Art Gallery . Located in nearby Joubert Park, the building itself is an architectural masterpiece designed by renowned British architect Edward Lutyens. It’s the most extensive gallery in sub-Saharan Africa, with 15 exhibition halls and sculpture gardens spanning the full spectrum from 17th-century Dutch masters to contemporary South African art. Keep an eye out for works by iconic artists from around the world, including Picasso, Monet, Dali, Rodin, and legendary local artist William Kentridge. The gallery stays open until 5 p.m., so this will be a fleeting visit; make sure to prioritize what you want to see. Admission is free.

Day 2: Evening

 Haldane Martin/Flickr.com/CC BY 2.0

6 p.m.: By this point, your feet are probably aching, but never fear; our next stop offers the perfect antidote for weary travelers. Located in Joburg’s oldest inner-city neighborhood, Ferreirasdorp, Mad Giant Brewery is the ideal place to take a load off. Pull up a stool at the bar and ask for a pint of hemp-infused Super Session ale, or sample limited-edition brews like the creatively named New England IPA, Jozi Carjacker. Can’t decide? Ask for a tasting flight or order a six-pack to take home with you. If you’re feeling up to it, the brewery does offer tours; but you may find you’d rather sit down in the sunshine outside and reminisce about the day’s adventures over a few cold ones.

8 p.m.: When you start feeling hungry again, head over to the brewery’s sister restaurant, Urbanologi. The dining space uses the exposed steelwork and concrete floors of the original warehouse to create an industrial-chic vibe that won it the title of Best Designed Bar in Africa and the Middle East back in 2017. Jozi hipsters and tourists in the know sit side-by-side at communal wooden trestle tables, beneath the gaze of a larger-than-life cut out of the Mad Giant himself. Watch as chefs prepare seasonal small plates in the open kitchen using ingredients sourced exclusively from farms within a 150-kilometer radius. The menu changes regularly to reflect what’s available, but past favorites have included duck pancakes, pork terrine, and tempura shimeji mushrooms.

The Best Johannesburg Itinerary

Joburg can be very overwhelming, or underwhelming if you don’t have the right Johannesburg itinerary planned for your (or a family member’s visit). Besides great restaurants, cafes, and rooftops, Joburg is home to incredible history and unique city tours, unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. Want to skateboard to Nelson Mandela’s law office, eat inside an underground bank vault, or tour the coolest street art on a bike? It’s all possible in Joburg.

Plus, Joburg is such a foodie city as there are always new restaurants popping up, eating out is pretty affordable (especially for overseas travelers), and the range of food is huge. You can get something as simple as a vegan burger from a gas station to high-end luxury dining from world-renowned chefs in Africa’s richest square mile, Sandton.

Who am I to tell you what to do in Joburg? I moved to Joburg in December 2020 and have loved every minute of it. The city is huge and there is something new around every corner. And, the people who live here are also incredible. I enjoy exploring the city, from food to adventures with my love (Wilhelm), and local tours. More people who visit South Africa need to spend time in Joburg. I hope this guide not only helps tourists but also locals who are trying to get to know their city more! As with all my posts, I will update this when I have new additions from my explorations or suggestions from you.

How long should I stay in Joburg?

Likely, you’ll be in Joburg as part of a larger trip that involves Cape Town , the Garden Route , and Kruger National Park. These are the biggest highlights of South Africa for tourists. Many will just use Joburg as a base to fly in or out of, but I’ll tell you now that these people are seriously missing out! I highly suggest 3 days to see all the major sites and then spending a 4th day pretending you’re a local. Use the day-by-day guide below to mix and match your perfect Johannesburg itinerary!

Joburg view

Should I rent a car?

There is no need to rent a car in Joburg as Ubers are cheap and easy to get . Most of the things to do in Joburg are in Joburg. On the other hand, you may want to rent a car in Cape Town just because there are so many places to visit outside the city that your ubers are going to add up. If you rent, check up on my South Africa driving tips .

Where should I stay in Joburg?

Check out my top suggestions, including Airbnbs, hotels, and unique accommodations around town.

Rosebank Radisson Red

Where to stay in Johannesburg

Is johannesburg safe, phone snatching.

This is the most common crime in Joburg. If you go out to lunch or dinner and sit outside, don’t put your phone on the table. Don’t hold your phone if you’re waiting for an uber outside, wait inside until your uber says it’s there.

Downtown/the Central Business District (CBD)

Downtown Joburg is difficult to describe. First, I mean CBD as the central area of the city on Google Maps. There are art deco buildings mixed with rundown areas, infused with culture and history. Johannesburg was founded in 1886, following the discovery of gold, and has continued to attract people from all over the continent to work in Joburg beginning with the mines and now jobs like delivery service drivers and uber drivers, among others. The CBD was once at the heart of Johannesburg’s industries . Under apartheid, the CBD was classified as a whites-only area , such that black people were allowed to work and shop there but could not live there.

However, when apartheid ended many local and national companies abandoned their offices, and parts of the CBD became crime hotspots. A lot of the area has turned around and apartments are home to young professionals, though many large office buildings remain empty (or even hijacked) as businesses moved to the new business center of South Africa, Sandton. You’ll get all this history and more on a tour of the CBD.

Walking at night and alone

I do not recommend walking alone downtown and in fact, I strongly advise against it. Even if you think you won’t get robbed and you’re street smart, why risk it? Support local and go on a tour with people who know what they are doing. We were robbed walking in the CBD , and I say that only to tell you to get a guide, not to discourage you! There are plenty of other areas around the city that you’re totally fine to explore on your own.

Joburg’s neighborhoods do not usually have streetlights. Even if your hotel or Airbnb seems close, it is not safe to walk at night between locations. It may seem silly, but you should take an uber even to go around the corner at night just to avoid a crime of opportunity.

Tour Guides in Johannesburg

Most of Joburg’s most interesting sites can be seen with a local tour guide. These aren’t your normal city guides. Joburg has a unique and thriving local guide scene for both tourists and those who live here. You can go on a tour on a scooter, on a skateboard, on a bike, in a safari jeep, or use your own two feet. I highly recommend going on a tour to see the most in a day and to explore areas you can’t without a guide. Going on a tour with these operators is like going with a friend and I’ve become friends with all the guides I’ve met because they are amazing.

The most popular tour operators are:

  • One Day Africa
  • City Skate Tour
  • Joburg Places
  • Micro-Adventure Tours
  • Honest Travel Experiences
  • Eenblond Tours

1 day in Joburg

In the morning, get breakfast at Home of the Bean and go on a Maboneng Street Art Tour . You can plan to walk up and down the main street yourself as well, but you’ll see a lot more and get the background of each of the street artists with a tour. Starting at Home of the Bean, first, cross the street toward Jewel City. You can plan the Maboneng street art tour with One Day Africa , Honest Travel , Microadventures , or City Skate Tours .

Jewel City Maboneng street art

Then, loop back and walk up to Curiocity Hotel , stopping in the shops and checking out the art on the way.

Maboneng street art

Stop in the quirky bookshop C ollectors Treasury , which has an endless collection of used and antique books.

Collectors Treasury Joburg Maboneng Books

In the afternoon, go on a Dlala Nje Hillbrow Tour and check out the Ponte City building. This is one of the most interesting buildings in Joburg. It’s shaped like a doughnut and has anything but a sweet history. Find out how the building was turned into a gangster’s paradise on a tour. You can read more about the history in my Ponte Challenge post. In this challenge, you race up to the top of the 54- story building with other contestants! All the tours with Dlala Nje are excellent so pick one that suits you to explore.

Hillbrow Tour Dlala Nje

Head to the Rooftop at Hallmark House Hotel for sundowners (colloquial South African for “a drink while watching the sunset”) and then get dinner (reservation recommended) at the Marabi Club . I love combo-ing these two experiences together because it’s so easy and the experience is always excellent.

The dinner at Marabi Club is amazing. Note that it’s only open Thursday- Saturday so try to fit it in accordingly. There is live jazz music paired with the best flavor combinations I’ve had. The vibe is cool you may want to dress up a little if you feel like it. Though, if you come right after a full day of adventures, that’s fine too. If you stay later, the dance floor opens as well! Read my review here .

If you don’t get to the Marabi Club on your first day, try to fit it in somewhere in your Johannesburg itinerary.

Hallmark House Marabi Club

Don’t miss out on this cool “ Hello Jozi ” sign. If you’re facing the hotel reception desk, walk to the left and all the way back. The sign is past the little cafe and lobby. If you want a cool Joburg skyline sweatshirt, as I have, you can buy one at the hotel’s shop.

2 days in Joburg

On your second day, do something different and go on a skateboarding tour with City Skate Tours to explore Marshalltown , or explore downtown with any of the tour guides I’ve suggested above. If you’re into African Fabrics, I recommend the Fashion District tour with Joburg Places.

City Skate Tours Marshalltown

For lunch, head to 44 Stanley for a range of cuisine options like the classic Salvation Cafe or my personal favorite Ethiopian restaurant, Little Addis . Stop for coffee at Bean There . 44 Stanley is home to several shops from retro records, trendy clothes, and South African pottery and homeware.

44 Stanley

Then head to Parkhurst for trendy shopping . Have an early dinner at one of the South African fusion restaurants like Embarc, or get incredible greek food at Kolonaki . Make a reservation for dinner no matter what day of the week. Joburg’s foodie culture means that people are always out and about. You can also purchase baskets from street sellers.

  • The Jolly Roger  for a quirky bar vibe.
  • If you like ice cream,  Paul’s Homemade  is a favorite.
  • Go into fashion shops from South African designers like  Jane Valken ,  Desray ,  Hannah Lavery , and so many more.
  • Walk into the small art gallery, The Art Room .

Safari option.

If you’re short on time in South Africa but still want to squeeze a safari into your Johannesburg itinerary, a day trip to Pilanesberg National Park is all you need. This park is just about an hour outside of Joburg. Contact the South African Wanderer for day trip tours to Pilanesberg Game Reserve with transport, food, and entrance fees all-inclusive.

City option

Go on a tour of Soweto with One Day Africa . Read my review from when my sister and I went on the tour with Rambo for all the history and details. If you’re feeling brave, you can bungee jump from the top of the Orlando towers!

4 days in Joburg

Explore Joburg’s neighborhoods on this last day of your Johannesburg Itinerary pretending to be a local! Use my suggestion or check all the different tour guides above to see if you’re missing something you want to do. Perhaps an art cycle tour, a guided tour of Newtown, or a coffee tour? Check out what’s going on at the Joburg Theater and catch a performance. The options are endless.

Get breakfast at Breezeblock and take a walk around the Brixton neighborhood to see the cool street art. Breezeblock is a wonderful cafe and they have one of the best shakshukas in town . Feel safe wandering up and down the streets. Walk on this street for the elephant mural and this street for the collection of interesting street art (including the dog). There is also a nice viewpoint of the city at Kingston Frost Park , just up the road from Breezeblock.

Brixton Johannesburg street art

A little off the beaten path, Linden is where Wilhelm and I live. It’s more of a local spot than a tourist destination. 4 th Ave has a lot of cute cafes and restaurants. The only Caribbean eatery in the city is here: Brian Lara . There is a wonderful cheese shop/cafe , Oregano bakery, a Joburg favorite Chinese place , a popular brunch spot ( The Whippet ), and a South African fusion cafe we love called Karibu .

You can also stop at Arthur Bales for fabric shopping . They carry the popular South African brand “3 Cats Shweshwe.” These are more delicate prints than what you may think of the bold African prints of West Africa. Go on a Fashion District tour with Joburg Places if you want bold prints. My personal favorite fabric shop is Makotis , a 5-min drive from Linden. The staff here are so nice and there is always a sale rack with interesting prints, They carry a large range of 3 Cats as well.

Braamfontein

Head over to Braam on a Saturday for a full day of activities. Check out my Braam itinerary on where to eat, get coffee and explore.

After breakfast in Brixton or Linden, head to The Wilds for a walk in Joburg’s city park which has incredible sculptures by local artist James Delany . You can check out his workshop at Victoria Yards.

The Wilds Johannesburg Park

Gerakaris Winery

Visit Gerakaris Winery (Wednesday-Sunday) for a tasting of Joburg’s very own wine .

Gerakaris Family Wines Johannesburg

Dinner options

For your last night on your Johannesburg itinerary, you’ve got a couple of options. Visit Northcliff for sunset , go on a Taste of Africa Tour for dinner (with operators like Honest Travel or Dlala Nje), or head over to Braamfontein to get dinner at Leano . Leano has excellent music and serves South African food. The dishes are pretty meat-heavy, but you can ask for a veggie platter and the kitchen will fill up your plates will all the delicious sides.

Leano restaurant

Adding markets and shopping to your itinerary

Joburg has several weekends and some weekday markets . Try to fit them in accordingly into your schedule. I highly recommend First Sundays at Victoria Yards . This market is open… the first Sunday of every month. Add this to your itinerary on any of the days above in the morning or early afternoon and go with an appetite so you can sample the food vendors.

In my experience, South Africa has high-end local souvenirs . Of course, you can get the typical wooden and sandstone animals made in Kenya and mud cloth from Mali, but these items are found in souvenir places around the continent. If you want something unique, you’ll probably end up spending a bit more.

Best viewpoints in Joburg

Northcliff Hill is a popular spot for families, friends, and couples to enjoy the sunset on an evening in Joburg. This is a great spot to bring visitors on their first evening if they are tired from traveling. We brought Wilhelm’s parents here on their first evening with us in December 2021. There are excellent views over the city and a small walk around the water tower. Wilhelm and I have brought a picnic up here before, and some people bring drinks too.

northcliff hill

Munroe Drive Viewpoint is located on top of a hill overlooking the city, but it’s not as high as Northcliff. There are still stunning sunset views. The viewpoint is located on a precarious curve in the road but there is a small pull-off for cars. We have biked past this point but have not yet come for sunset. (Do you see me on my bike in the pic below? )

Safaris around Joburg

There are several safari game reserves around Johannesburg. A 2-night stay is probably all you need at a lodge to see the animals and enjoy if you’re doing a full room+board lodging option. Alternatively, you can do a day trip to Pilanesberg National Park. Check out my Safaris in South Africa page for more details.

Optional trip on the way to kruger: blyde river canyon.

Spend an extra day on your way to Kruger by exploring the Panorama Route/Blyde River Canyon . Think of it as a green Grand Canyon with incredible waterfalls. You can also easily spend 4 days just exploring Blyde River Canyon, as I’ve done twice!

Weekend trips from Johannesburg

Check out all these weekend trips from Joburg here . Some of my favorites are Dullstroom , Clarens , Timamoon Lodge , the Panorama Route , and Magoebaskloof Pass .

Hiking around Joburg

Add hiking to your Johannesburg itinerary by visiting Rustig for incredible views of the Magaliesberg mountains in the Cradle of Humankind. This lodge and hiking ground is 2 hours outside Joburg so you’ll need half a day here as long as you wake up early enough. If you want to hike closer to the city, try out Ground and request a picnic afterward. Check all the places to hike around Joburg .

Should I visit Pretoria?

You can read the Afrikaner history at the interesting Voortrekker Monument , but otherwise, if you have limited time you can skip Pretoria. (Maybe Pretoria peeps will have something to say about this… I’ll wait for suggestions). Hazelwood is a popular area with cool bars and restaurants if you happen to find yourself in Pretoria… and you’ve exhausted your Johannesburg itinerary.

One Day in Johannesburg Itinerary – Top Things to do in Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg. Jozi. Joburg. This city is the true heartbeat of South Africa. Many people tend to skip over it during their travels to this beautiful country, spending only enough time to land at OR Tambo International Airport and board their flight either to Cape Town or a safari destination. Yet, spending a day in this dynamic and historical city will not only intrigue you, but you will come away with an appreciation of how far South Africa has come and where it is going. With a full day in this city, you will be able to become plugged in to the South African culture as well as understand what makes Johannesburg a wonderful destination.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Johannesburg?

Johannesburg is known for its mild climate temperature-wise, and therefore you can visit it year-round. However, to avoid the rainier times of the year, April through October are ideal. This is their fall, winter, and spring months where temperatures are a little cooler with less rain. However, most travelers visiting Johannesburg are pairing their trip with a safari and/or Cape Town , in which visiting in the late spring/early summer months of September-November are ideal.

A Few Facts About Johannesburg

Johannesburg, also known as the city of gold , was established during the gold rush in South Africa in 1886. It has been remade four times over the years from a tented camp, to a shantytown made of tin, to only a handful of Edwardian brick buildings, and now to the megacity of skyscrapers that it is today. Johannesburg also houses the Cradle of Humankind, where 40% of the world’s human fossils can be found. Johannesburg is home to several townships, most notably Soweto, or “South Western Townships,” where Nelson Mandela lived. South Africa also hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Johannesburg Downtown

One Day in Johannesburg Itinerary

Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do during your one day in Johannesburg.

Take a Guided Tour of Soweto

The best thing you can do while visiting Johannesburg is to check out Soweto . Soweto is home to two million people and the largest black urban settlement in Africa. It is also home to so much culture and life that a true picture of Johannesburg isn’t complete without a visit. This is where Nelson Mandela lived, where the 1976 Soweto student uprising took place, and overall, it was a political center during the Apartheid. As with many townships in South Africa, though, it is wise to go with a local guide. Ilios Travel is a great company to go with for local guides.

Soweto

Upon passing the colorfully painted Orlando Towers and the FNB Stadium shaped like an African pot, you’ll start to feel the pride and excitement that buzzes around this area. You’ll want to start with the footbridge of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where you will see a panoramic view of Soweto.

Soweto 2

Then, you will dive into the history of Soweto starting with the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Orlando West, built in memoriam to those who passed away during the tragic student uprising during the Apartheid on June 16, 1976. There is a museum next to it where you can learn more about the events leading up to the uprising, most notably the government forcing students to be instructed in Afrikaans, a language many students did not know or understand.

Hector Pieterson Memorial

Next, you will continue to drive through the neighborhood of Orlando West, past homes ranging from tin to upscale. You will notice these houses show the vast discrepancy of rich and poor. It is very eye opening, yet you still see smiles and happiness exuding from both sides. Perhaps a lesson can be learned in finding happiness no matter the circumstances?

Orlando Towers

After the short drive, you will continue to Nelson Mandela’s home, which is now called the Nelson Mandela Museum . Small and humble, the home is full of slices of history of his imprisonment, release, and presidency. There are photos of him with family, dignitaries, and more. To get a good glimpse into his life and family, this house is a great site to see. Also in the neighborhood, you will drive past Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s house and the Sisulu residences.

Visit the Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum is a must-visit during your time in Johannesburg. You could either add this onto your tour of Soweto or go on your own afterwards. This museum shows the eye-opening effects of segregation, with each person receiving a card indicating whether they are white or non-white upon entry. This determines which entrance you may enter. You’ll only be separated for a short while, but the museum shows many aspects of the Apartheid era and the suffering that occurred. It also shows how they are moving forward into the future in South Africa.

Apartheid Museum

The most moving part was the outside display of glass with life-size photos of various people looking ahead. “South Africa is for everyone” as they look to the future.

Downtown Sandton and Nelson Mandela Square

If you’re still with the guide, ask them if they have time to drive to downtown Johannesburg. You will see the bustling cityscape, stopping at Nelson Mandela Square. This square features a statue in memoriam to their late president, and it also is a huge dining and retail center.

Nelson Mandela Square

Dinner at Melrose Arch

After a long day of learning about the history of South Africa and the Apartheid, it is time to see the current-day Johannesburg. Melrose Arch is a large shopping and residential center that is very popular with the locals. Explore the cafés, go shopping, and grab dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants. It is a great excuse to sample some South African wine as well at many of these establishments. Try the Chenin Blanc or Pinotage and enjoy the ending to your day in Johannesburg.

Day trips from johannesburg

You’re in Africa, so it’s only natural that you want to see as much as possible. Fortunately, day trips from Johannesburg offer plenty of excellent destinations, and you won’t be disappointed, no matter which one you choose. Here are a few suggestions.

Pilanesberg National Park

A trip to Pilanesberg National Park is everything you’ve ever dreamed of when it comes to visiting Africa. The incredible photo safari tour you take there will bring you eye to eye with this continent’s big five: lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and Cape buffalo. You can even get some serious photo equipment at the park! Come here to experience the true meaning of African safari.

The Cradle of Humankind

The Cradle of Humankind is a huge area relatively close to Johannesburg and therefore a great choice for a day trip. See where the incredible journey of the human race, of all of us, started and explore the cave in which fossils of early humanoids were found. This UNESCO World Heritage Site also has a superb exhibition, so you can truly learn a whole lot in just one day. Visit this place to see the links that bind us all.

Just over 50 kilometers away, Pretoria is definitely a city worth seeing. Visit the nearby Cullinan mines where some of the world’s most exquisite diamonds are mined. Hazel Food Market is something every foodie must visit with treats from all over the world, but the impressive Voortrekker Monument is a sight to behold, too. With many other sights and a beautiful  botanical garden to explore, Pretoria is the perfect choice if you want to see another South African city.

Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center

Yep, cheetahs. The fastest land animals in the world. Meet these incredible creatures up close in the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center on the outskirts of Pretoria. This is a full-fledged safari we’re talking about, so you will be taken on a spectacular ride through the reserve and see many other animals, as well. Cheetahs are the stars of the show, though.

Kruger National Park

Be warned, Kruger National Park is not that close. It’s about a four hours’ drive, so if you’re planning this for your day trip from Johannesburg, plan carefully. That being said, the trip will be well worth it. An incredible array of all kinds of animals await you here, and you will witness Africa at its most beautiful. You can also stop for a meal, which will certainly be one of the most unique lunches you ever have in your life. If you have the time and the energy, go for it!

Extra Tips for Visiting Johannesburg

  • Be careful if wandering around, as Johannesburg does have a higher crime rate than most cities. Be aware of your surroundings, don’t walk around at night, and don’t wear flashy clothes and jewelry. Most crime happens in townships, which is why going with a local guide is a smart idea versus on your own.
  • Ubers are readily available throughout the city, just be sure to check that the license plate matches the app.
  • “Hayibo!” means “Wow!”
  • “Howzit?” means “How is it going?” or “How are you?”
  • “Ag Man!” means “Oh man!”

Johannesburg Itinerary: City Tour, Day Trips and More

Table of contents.

Johannesburg was the start to our epic two week safari through South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, but it was so much more. The city is fascinating – we knew about Johannesburg from our history books and I had an old friend from SA but still couldn’t predict what the city would hold. It’s hard to devise a Johannesburg itinerary because it’s largely a commercial city. A hub in Africa, the city isn’t the real destination – it’s a jumping off point.

Here’s how to make the most of your time in Johannesburg. Our 2-3 day itinerary gives you all the highlights and history of the city and points you in the right direction of African exploration.

Some links may be affiliate links. This means we may get paid if you buy something or take an action after clicking certain links at no extra cost to you.

What To Expect in Johannesburg

Johannesburg is a city of contradictions. The city rises in the middle of nowhere, formed nearly overnight in a region where the first humans lived. It is a gold rush town where the rich and the poor are separated by little more than a fence. The city carries the scars of an ugly past, and the tension of a challenging present. But after visiting Johannesburg you will not only feel the weight of history, but also the resilience of humanity and desire for a hopeful future.

Where To Stay in Johannesburg

When we researched where to stay in Johannesburg, we decided on the Fashion District . Sounds fabulous, right?

It’s billed as an up-and-coming neighborhood with character, and it definitely is that. When my friend picked us up to explore Johannesburg, he was a bit surprised that we picked the area. I understand his sentiment because some of the best places in our hometown are trendy and hip, but historically unsafe and undesired.

Anyway, these two white boys were just fine in the area and loved the neighborhood. It’s full of things to do, bars, clubs, art, hotels and hostels.

We could have stayed in Rosebank or Sandton, an area best known for its shopping mall. It’s a safe and super sterile area of Joburg, but not for us.

What we learned about Johannesburg is that it’s super spread out. The historical reason is so that blacks could live outside of the city center, but close enough to commute into the center and work for white families.

12 Decades Art Hotel

johannesburg tour itinerary

We stayed at the 12 Decades Art Hotel . It’s a gorgeous hotel that’s rustic and simple-chic. Each room represents a period in South Africa’s colorful history, hence the name ’12 Decades’. It was a great room, perfect facilities and friendly staff in an area with plenty to offer in terms of food, nightlife and transportation.

South Africa Travel Tips To Apply To Your Johannesburg Itinerary

We didn’t learn everything there is about Johannesburg, but this was one destination where we had local friends to show us the ropes. We picked up tips from them and a few we learned on our own, so here’s a bit of what we think you’ll benefit from.

  • Say Howzit:  That’s your basic informal greeting in Joburg. Howzit is ”what’s up?” or ”que pasa?” – use it to greet your server, the staff who check you into your hotel and anyone else while in Johannesburg.
  • Traffic SUCKS: We’re used to annoying traffic in the satest – Philadelphia isn’t exactly an easy city to navigate quickly, but WOW Johannesburg is tough around commuting time. They have some public transportation, but the car is king. Avoid traveling highways and local roads during peak travel times.
  • Be Confident (but cool): Crime is a natural concern for visitors to Johannesburg, but just like big cities in America (or elsewhere) you just need to know your surroundings. Be vigilant, don’t flash money or things of value and act like a normal person – looking like a tourist can make you prey.
  • Get Out: Johannesburg is cool, and you should definitely experience a good night out in ”town” while there but your  itinerary should include some day trips from Johannesburg. There’s so much to explore in South Africa and much of it is outside of the cities.
  • Drive and Then Walk: Whether you’re in a taxi or you rent a car, you’ll find that the traffic gridlock extends beyond the commuter highways and into the city blocks. They can be notoriously bad for traffic and it’s common to just be politely asked to leave a taxi instead of dropped off at your destination. It will usually save you time anyway. The same goes for parking along your route – even a kilometer walk can save you time.

Day 1 Johannesburg Itinerary: Johannesburg City Tours and More

For your first day in Johannesburg you need to get acquainted to the city. After that, it’s key to relax, recover from your travels there and tune into the vibe of the city. We give you a way to do all that and have a little fun along the way!

Hop On Hop Off Johannesburg

hop on hop off johannesburg

I know we just told you how grim the traffic is, but Hop On Hop Off Johannesburg is actually a great way to first meet the city. Once commuters are at work, it leaves just your Johannesburg city tour bus on the road and you can see it all! With a city that’s spread out far and wide, the hop on hop off is a great way to go.

Another reason to add this to your Johannesburg itinerary is that you can use it to get between different spots in the city. There are 24 and 48 hours tour options, so even if you ride the whole rout – you can make it your personal taxi for day 2. I know, we’re cheap – but why pay for a taxi when you can have an open-air bus with multi-lingual tour information?

Stops include:

Green Tour:

1. Rosebank 2. Zoo Lake 3. Johannesburg Zoo 4. Military Museum 5. Constitution Hill

1. Constitution Hill 2. Mining District 3. Carlton Centre (for the Roof of Africa viewing deck) 4. James Hall Transport Museum 5. Gold Reef City Casino Hotel (join the Soweto extension tour here) 6. Apartheid Museum 7. New Town 8. Origins Centre at Wits University 9. Neighborhoods Market

The Hop On Hop Off Johannesburg experience could easily be your whole day. The beauty is you can tie in any of these other activities along the way. At the very least, hop off and grab lunch in any number of spots. We recommend finding lunch at Gold Reef Casino and visiting the amusement park for your afternoon.

Gold Reef City and Soweto Tours

johannesburg itinerary soweto tours

When the Johannesburg gold mines closed in 1971, a campy amusement park crept up in its place. All of the buildings are designed to replicate the gold mining history of the region. It’s fitting in the amusement park, and depending on your luck – with the casino too!

You can visit Gold Reef City in combination with the Hop On Hop Off Johannesburg experience and Soweto Tours. Soweto is a black township that sprung from shanty towns near the mines of Johannesburg. During apartheid, it was a black township and the site of many riots and violent uprisings in the struggle against apartheid.

When in Soweto you can visit the home of Nelson Mandela on Vilikazi Street (probably the most visited street in South Africa). Desmond Tutu still lives on the street. You must also take a photo of the brilliant Orlando Power Station.

The Orlando Power Station is an old coal power plant with cooling towers that are now covered in murals. They dominate the skyline, landscape and instagram. There are even bungee jumping options and a swing from the towers.

However you decide to visit Soweto, be aware that it’s a powerful and meaningful place. It’s also still home to a new generation of citizens and it’s more than a tourist attraction. Having a tour guide is the best way to visit and you can get a combination ticket to do the Hope On Hop Off Johannesburg experience with the Soweto tour and trip to Gold Reef City.

BOOK A COMBO PASS FOR THE HOP ON HOP OFF, GOLD REEF CITY AND SOWETO TOURS.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Gold Reef City is a cool way to spend time in Johannesburg. It’s got something for the whole family – an amusement park, a casino and there’s even a hotel in case you don’t want to leave. If we were there with my brother, sister-in-law and nephews this is probably where we would have made home base while in Joburg. That’s why we’ll leave the hotel info and hint-hint to Nate and Lindsay:

Day 2 Johannesburg Itinerary: Apartheid Museum

You cannot visit South Africa and skip the incredible history of Nelson Mandela and the Apartheid Era. The Apartheid Museum is an important stop in your time in Africa. It’s an incredibly heavy day, so we advise going to the museum early in the day – you can easily spend four hours walking through the exhibits.

There is food available outside of the museum, but we recommend eating in the morning, spending a full morning at the museum and heading to Nelson Mandela Square afterward.

See the Apartheid Museum

johannesburg itinerary apartheid museum entry

One of the most important, touching and enriching experiences for families visiting South Africa is the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. The museum should be a staple in any Johannesburg itinerary, and while the trip though the halls is a heavy experience, it’s hard to imagine visiting South Africa and skipping it.

Before you ever reach the gates of the museum, most people are keenly aware of the history of South Africa. Understanding the Apartheid Era is an important part of visiting Johannesburg.

When you pick up your tickets to the museum you’re assigned a random racial identity. The assigned race is often different than the one with which you approached, but it’s how you enter the museum. For us Mike was ‘white’ and I was ‘black’. Because of our different races, we entered through separate doors and our lives were depicted from the lens of our given identities. During the first 15 minutes in the museum, daily life was described for us based on the group we were assigned.

It was difficult, but necessary to face this dark history immediately. Something like apartheid can’t be dropped in doses or delivered with artificial flavoring, it has to be swallowed like the poison that it was. It slaps you in the face as soon as you enter – and that’s the only way.

Still, during the journey through the Apartheid Museum, you’re left with hope, not harm or hatred. This museum encapsulates the entire experience of visiting South Africa. You’re continuously reminded of the past while only looking forward. You remain appreciative of the strides that an entire society of people took to achieve generational healing in a much shorter period – a period that we’re still living through.

johannesburg itinerary apartheid museum

Stop at Mandela Square

After the powerful and somber experience of the museum, you’ll need a mental break and the chance to take a deep breath. There’s no better spot to it than Mandela Square. It’s not a far drive (during non-peak hours) and there are plenty of spots around for a late lunch.

Most visitors to Johannesburg eventually get to Mandela Square. If for no other reason,  because there is a giant, 9 meter tall statue of Nelson Mandela.

After learning of the darkest parts of South Africa’s past – it’s a fitting end of the day. You can sit and enjoy a bite to eat or a drink on Mandela Square at Standton Mall. Look around and you’ll see a free and multi-cultural South Africa that was once cut off from the world but now invites you in.

Day 3 Johannesburg Itinerary: Hartbeespoort Day Trip From Johannesburg

While the city of Johannesburg has plenty to offer, we highly recommend day trips from Johannesburg. Escaping the city to discover the surrounding area is one of the best things to put in your Johannesburg itinerary.

Johannesburg sits on the Highveld plateau, an inland grassland in northwest South Africa. The area is most notable for its mining history, as Johannesburg itself was settled to support a gold rush in the surrounding area. This means the area has an interesting history with frontier towns and mountains that still offer great experiences for tourists.

The highlight of this day trip is to venture into the Magaliesberg mountains northwest of Johannesburg, exploring some attractions around this area.

Hartbeespoort Dam

Hartbeespoort Dam is located about 90 minutes north of central Johannesburg. The dam was built in the 1920’s to help irrigate the growing agricultural industry in the grasslands north of Johannesburg. Today the reservoir formed by the dam offers opportunities for boating and other water recreation, but the highlight is visiting the dam itself.

The dam is an arch that you can walk or drive over, and there are excellent views of the barren rock surrounding the dam. While the dam itself isn’t terribly imposing, it certainly offers a view into the landscape of the area and is a neat spot for some pictures.

johannesburg itinerary hartbeespoort dam

Tan’ Malie Se Winkel Restaurant

Just down the road from the dam is the Tan’ Malie Se Winkel. This is an Afrikaner restaurant that takes you back into time. The Afrikaners (or Boers) are descendants of the Dutch settlers of South Africa that arrived in the colonial era.

This area was only populated by Boers in the mid-1800’s as people migrated from Cape Colony in the southwest to escape British rule. These Boers were primarily nomadic herders and farmers who engaged on what is known as the “Great Trek” to arrive in this area.

The restaurant is filled with nick-knacks and memorabilia from early 20th century Boer life, and offers the unique cuisine of the culture and era. You can have a sit-down meal here or just sample some of the pastries and finger food that they offer.

Something to definitely try is biltong, the local cured meat. You can sample local favorites like ostrich or other regional game. Mike tried it, but I’m an at-will vegetarian and I decided to be right then.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Hartbeespoort Aerial CableWay

No matter where we travel, we love nothing more than going somewhere high to get an amazing panorama of the area. Located just 10 minutes from the dam, the Hartbeespoort Aerial CableWay offers you a spectacular ride to the top of the Magaliesberg mountains.

hartbeespoort aerial cableway

The view from the top of the CableWay will give an impressive view of the area, and there is a nice walking path with information boards that explain the geography and history of the area.

This region is fascinating, as you will stand near the cradle of humanity where some of the oldest artifacts of human life have been found.

Then to the north you will see the mines and foundries of the area that give South Africa so much of its mineral wealth. And in the distance you see the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, marking the core of the Gauteng region.

hartbeespoort aerial cableway

There are also several small restaurants both at the top and bottom of the cableway, offering drinks and meals with a great view.

More Things To Do in Hartbeespoort

Cradle of Humankind

While South Africa is filled with fascinating modern history, it is the truly ancient history of this area that is the most incredible. Some of the oldest artifacts of humans come from this area, earning it the nickname the “cradle of humankind”.

About 40 minutes south of Hartbeespoort Dam is the Cradle of Humankind Maropeng visitors center. Here you can see exhibits showing some of the incredible discoveries in the area, as scientists piece together the origins of humanity. You can also visit the Sterkfontein Caves, a neat adventure into the cave network where so many artifacts of our ancestors have been found.

Ann Van Dyk Cheetah Center

If you don’t have time for a proper safari, this is a good opportunity to see the fastest cats of the African wild. This is a cheetah sanctuary, focused not just on displaying wild animals but on conservation of the species. The center offers a variety of guided tours that let you see these amazing animals through the park, and some tours include a “cheetah run” where you can see them get up to full speed!

Lion & Safari Park

Located about 25 minutes south of the Aerial CableWay is the Lion and Safari Park. They offer a variety of tours, including self-drive and a guided tour through the park. A visit here can’t compare to a real safari in Kruger Park, but it can be fun for children and let you get up close to some African wildlife!

Crocodile River (whitewater rapids)

Being surrounded by mountain ranges, the area has several good rivers for white water rapid tours. One of the best rivers is the Crocodile River, and several tour companies offer part-day trips down the river.

Now You Know How To Plan A Johannesburg Itinerary

okay, so now you see how to build an unforgettable trip to Johannesburg.

But where do you go from here?

Our Johannesburg itinerary led us to an incredible safari. We did the Botswana & Falls Adventure tour from G Adventures. You can use the link to read more about it – but if you haven’t found the right safari tour for you there are a few options.

Our perfect safari tour ended in beautiful Victoria Falls , and I actually got us stuck there because of my passport nightmare (you can read about it HERE ).

Most visitors leave greater Johannesburg for Pilanesberg National Park or the super popular Kruger National Park. Some fly into Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) and don’t even spend time in or around the city – they just book it to the safari tours.

The point of our post here (and hopefully you got it) is that there’s still a lot of cool stuff to do and see in Johannesburg.

And if you want to check out other South African tours, safari through Kruger, traverse Botswana, sip South African wine on Table Mountain and anything else in your dream vacation – check out listings from G Adventures HERE .

36 Hours in Johannesburg

By Lynsey Chutel Updated March 23, 2023

  • Share full article

A view over a cityscape as the sky is turning orange. In the foreground is a spindly tree with spiky-looking leaves.

For too long, Johannesburg was a victim of its own reputation for violent crime, with citizens retreating behind high walls and socializing in shopping malls. A culture shift — partly spurred by the city’s strict pandemic lockdowns — has many Joburgers rediscovering the outdoors and the city’s Goldilocks weather (not too hot, not too cold) to dine and dance under the open sky. Over a weekend in this modern, contradictory city, wander through changing neighborhoods that are embracing galleries and sidewalk cafes, pull up a plastic chair at a market for unfussy barbecue, or sing along at a theater with a rich history of protest performance. And no longer the no-go area for tourists, as it was during the apartheid era, Soweto is a testament to Black South Africa’s contemporary creativity and unbridled joy. Take a turn, or as South Africans say, a “short left,” and be rewarded in Joburg.

Recommendations

  • 44 Stanley is a collection of interesting boutiques, galleries and cafes, all centered around a canopied courtyard. The Drum Archive Shop , with its apartheid-era magazine covers, and Chocoloza , a creative chocolatier, are two worthy stops.
  • Konka , a day-to-night club in Soweto, celebrates car culture, barbecue and music.
  • 1947 on Vilakazi Street is a Soweto restaurant offering refined South African cooking and local wines.
  • The Shortmarket Club is a brasserie serving European and Asian dishes, with some South African touches.
  • Marble is a stylish restaurant with a no-reservations bar area that offers a fabulous view at sunset.
  • Peachy , a restaurant and bar awash in pastels, is perfect for soaking up the afternoon sun.
  • Bean There , a cafe and roastery, sells ethically sourced African coffee.
  • Sakhumzi Restaurant has a daily buffet in Soweto where you can try a traditional “seven colors” lunch.
  • BKhz , a gallery in the Rosebank district, highlights work by emerging South African artists.
  • Kwa Mai Mai , originally a traditional medicine market, is a dizzying and vibrant destination for real-deal chisa nyama (South African barbecue).
  • Thesis Lifestyle is a store by Thesis Brand , a streetwear label, and a gathering place for the township’s young, creative scene.
  • The Market Theater , in a former fruit market downtown, has a long history of staging protest plays.
  • Joburg Theater , also downtown, has a program encompassing dance, theater, music and children’s shows.
  • Vilakazi Street in Soweto draws visitors to see the Mandela House , where Nelson Mandela and his family lived, and the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum , which commemorates the 1976 Soweto student uprising.
  • Joburg Places offers half-day walking tours that follow in the footsteps of famous South African figures, as well as highlighting the migrants who shaped the city.
  • Alternatively, Bridge Books , an inner-city bookshop, leads tours through the lens of the city’s literary history, while Dlala Nje ’s food tours hop from one African eatery to another.
  • 54 on Bath is a luxury hotel in Rosebank offering a tranquil atmosphere amid the bustle of a growing business district. Double rooms start at around 3,655 rand, or about $197, a night.
  • Nearby is Voco Johannesburg Rosebank , an upscale hotel that opened in 2022 with an all-day restaurant and bar and a remote-working hub. A standard double room with breakfast starts at around 2,700 rand.
  • If you decide to spend the night in Soweto, Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers offers simple, safe accommodation. Four- and six-bed shared dorm rooms start at 220 rand per night, and private double rooms with an en suite bathroom start at 545 rand.
  • For short-term rentals , look at Rosebank as well as the Parkhurst and Parkview neighborhoods, which are close to the city center and offer an array of sidewalk cafes.
  • Johannesburg is a sprawling city with unreliable public transportation. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt are good options. Although Soweto is tourist-friendly these days, Ubers may not be dependable and it can be confusing to navigate if you’re driving yourself. Ask your hotel to recommend a driver for the day, which should cost around 1,500 rand.
  • While the city is relatively safe for tourists, it’s important to stay vigilant, especially for pickpockets in crowded areas. Avoid walking around at night outside the designated pedestrian zones.

Two people walk down concrete steps during the daytime. They are both looking to their left, and one person is talking on a cell phone. Near the steps is a large art display featuring swirling, colorful patterns.

One Day in Johannesburg Itinerary

Morning: food tour.

There’s no better way to see a city than on a food tour. You get to learn all about a place through its yummy eats! What could be better than feeding your brain and your tummy at the same time?

So I strongly suggest booking this food tour of Johannesburg for your one day in Johannesburg itinerary, led by a local guide who took us to places we never would have been able to find on our own.

I honestly don’t think anyone should be able to visit Jo’burg without taking this food tour because it’s such an in-depth way of seeing the city.

And you can book the tour easily right here .

One of the first things you’ll notice about the tour is what an amazing value it is! Let me show you all the delicious things you’ll eat with…

Approximately Top 5: Johannesburg Food

one day in johannesburg itinerary

1) World of Samoosa

Our first stop is at a famous Samoosa stand in the Oriental Plaza shopping center. Our guide, whom I shall call Charlize, said that she had grown up in Johannesburg under apartheid, and back then people of all races came to the Oriental Plaza to shop, but white people didn’t eat there because of lies about it being unsanitary. “Thank goodness those days are past us,” she said.

I am used to calling these Indian fried pockets samosas, but here they are samoosas, and everyone on the tour got to choose three different flavors. I selected cheese because Charlize recommended it, the coconut, which is a sweet samoosa, and the spicy mutton.

When you go to a South African Indian restaurant, and they say the food is spicy, that’s not a joke. You’ve been warned! But all varieties were fresh and delicious.

one day in johannesburg itinerary

2) Indian Sweets

So, samosa/samoosas I might have had before, but Indian sweets were pretty new to me. There were so many little sweets in every color, and all of them were rich and seemed to have nuts in them. The other guests on the tour and I split one because it was too big to eat alone.

You can also buy some sweets at your own expense for later. I recommend doing this if you go on a safari trip or something because it’s good to have a snack for the car. Just buy whatever Charlize says to buy because she knows everything.

one day in johannesburg itinerary

The second half of the main course was a delightful Indian dish known as the dosa. I had thought of this as a street food because back home in NYC we have a famous man who sells dosas from a cart.

But Charlize said in South Africa they eat them sitting down. Makes sense because in NYC we can turn everything into a street food whether or not it’s supposed to be that way.

These were extremely filling because they are made with, I believe, rice flour, but then stuffed with a spiced potato concoction. It’s carbs on carbs!

one day in johannesburg itinerary

4) Drinks Time!

There are no alcohol drinks on this tour, but we did get two special beverages. The first was a whole coconut from an extremely kind coconut vendor from Mozambique.

After he split open the coconut and we drank the water, he cut out the coconut for us to it. It was very fresh, almost like a jelly, because it was a young coconut. Once again, I could not finish the whole thing, but that’s what purses are for!

Then we stopped at a juice shop that makes all their beverages fresh in front of you. This was made with mango, which was in season at the time, and sugarcane, which is perfect because it’s not too sweet. Plus it’s highly amusing to watch someone grind up sugarcane.

Pro tip! I got to try some avocado juice because I said I had never consumed any before. It was perfectly sweet and creamy. Maybe you’ll get to try a sample too, if you are nice. But I can’t make any promises, Internet Stranger!

However, you do not need to worry. If you do not get any avocado juice for free, you can always buy some.

one day in johannesburg itinerary

5) The World’s Most Surprising Dessert

Can you see those multi-colored candies up top? Well, they’re these candies that are super popular in Indian households, but the man who runs this store makes a special treat with them.

He rolls them up in a green leaf, covers the leaf in some sort of sticky, sweet syrup, and then you pop the whole thing in your mouth!

It has a strong anise flavor, so licorice lovers only need apply, but I found it to be surprisingly enjoyable. Also it felt like it was freshening my breath after all that spicy food.

one day in johannesburg itinerary

6) Ice Cream!

So you might be thinking that the photo above looks like it’s of an alien’s genitals, but it’s actually ice cream. This ice cream comes in several flavors, but I chose the “barfi” flavor because it’s a very popular Indian milk sweet, and I had never tried barfi ice cream before.

As delicious as the ice cream was, after all the rest of the food, none of us on the group could finish the massive things. That’s how you know it was a good value food tour!

24 Hour Tip

Those are all the secrets of the food tour that I can share with you for now.

one day in johannesburg itinerary

Afternoon: Constitution Hill

After the food tour, just take an Uber on over to Constitution Hill , one of the most historic places in Johannesburg. No one day in Johannesburg itinerary is complete without a visit here. This area was once home to a notorious prison which housed many of South Africa’s most famous political prisoners.

But it’s also home to some buildings that are important to South Africa’s government today, like the Constitutional Court. Just buy a ticket to the one-hour tour online in advance, as you probably won’t arrive in time for the two-hour tour after the food tour.

But that’s ok! Or you can visit the Constitution Hill another day. This way you’ll be able to learn much more than…

Three Facts: Constitution Hill

one day in johannesburg itinerary

1) Who Were Some Famous Prisoners Here?

Well, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that Nelson Mandela was kept here while he awaited trial. (After he was convicted, he was sent to Robben Island, in Cape Town.)

Mandela was the only Black prisoner ever kept in the white prison because they didn’t want him stirring up the other Black prisoners. But he was kept in a hospital cell so he’d be totally separate.

But did you know that Gandhi was also imprisoned here when he was living in South Africa? His thoughts and principles of non-violence were very influential on Mandela.

Winnie Mandela was also imprisoned on the women’s side of the prison. (You can visit both sides when you go to Constitution Hill.)

one day in johannesburg itinerary

2) Why Were People Imprisoned Here?

People were imprisoned here for a variety of reasons, but most of them were political prisoners. There were some who were jailed for violent offences and were not political prisoners, like the notorious Daisy De Melker.

She was called the Black Widow of South Africa because she married two different plumbers and killed them for the insurance money. (Why only plumbers? Did a plumber sting her as a child?)

The only murder she was convicted of was the murder of her son, whom she also killed for the insurance money. You know, I try not to judge people, but killing your own offspring for some cash seems about as low as it can get.

The prisoners were treated quite poorly here, especially the Black prisoners. The conditions were totally unhygienic–dishes might be washed only once every three months.

And while the white prisoners were given a piece of cake on Christmas, the Black prisoners were only allowed to have a little sugar with some coffee or tea. Many of the Black prisoners died from this poor treatment because they became ill.

3) What About the Constitutional Court?

You can actually go inside the Constitutional Court, and some of the tours of Constitution Hill take you inside. We learned about how the court system works in South Africa.

They don’t have juries! I actually knew about that because Jess Day went off on this subject on an episode of New Girl, but it still surprised me to hear it said out loud.

The Constitutional Court decides constitutional issues, not criminal cases, much like the Supreme Court in the United States. For example, it was the Constitutional Court that decided that marriage equality should be the law of the land in South Africa.

My favorite case was the decision that a former President of South Africa owed the country money. He said that the money was for security, but it turned out he had spent part of it on a swimming pool.

He claimed this was for security against fire, but the court wasn’t buying it and made him pay the money back. Well played, Constitutional Court, well played.

If the food tour isn’t available when you’re in Johannesburg, try the Hop on Hop Off Bus instead. It’s not as intimate or delicious as the food tour, but it will give you great views of the city.

You can buy your ticket easily by clicking here .

Near the bus ticket booth is the lovely Rosebank Craft Market . I always get compliments on the beautiful print skirt I got there that you can see pictured above. Plus it’s nice to chat with the local artists.

Evening: Dinner at Clico

It’s getting to be around dinner time on our one day in Johannesburg itinerary, so let’s head to Clico , one of the most glamorous restaurants in Johannesburg.

It’s located inside the Clico Hotel, but we won’t be spending the night here. We will be enjoying a lovely amuse bouche, like this aromatic venison amuse bouche…

Followed by this refreshing chilled cucumber with goat cheese and peaches. As someone from the Northern Hemisphere, nothing is more exciting than being able to go down to South Africa in January and get a bowl of summer like this.

With a lighter appetizer, you can balance it with a heavier main course, so I suggest something like the duck with glazed beetroot. This came with a citrus relish and bitter greens, so you had every flavor in one dish: umami from the meat, sweet beet, sour citrus, bitter greens, and then of course there’s always salt in any good duck dish.

I also enjoyed that the manager came out to talk to all the guests. He said he made it a point to get to know everyone who comes into the restaurant, so we had a brief chat about travel in general and my hometown NYC specifically.

More restaurants should do this because it makes you feel really appreciated, especially as a solo diner.

And for dessert, we have a pineapple bombe with lemongrass, coconut, and mango. This was extremely refreshing after the rich duck.

Also, it’s our second mango helping of the day, but I say if you are lucky enough to be in South Africa for mango season, eat all of the mango. Leave none behind!

Where to Stay?

It’s always important to choose the location of your hotel carefully when you travel, especially if you are a solo traveler, like I am. And this is especially important if you’re enjoying a one day in Johannesburg itinerary because some places in the city are safer for tourists than others.

That’s why I recommend staying at the @sandton Hotel when you are in Johannesburg. The facilities are new and stylish, there’s an extremely helpful 24 hour staff, and the location of the hotel is excellent. No matter where you are going in Johannesburg, you’ll be able to have an Uber come to meet you here. (And Uber in South Africa is very affordable.)

If you want to book a stay at this hotel, just click here .

And if you want to find an equally lovely place to stay during your time in Johannesburg, click here . This search engine will help you find the perfect place to stay for your one day in Johannesburg itinerary. With plenty of options to choose from, I’m sure you’ll find something for your schedule and budget.

The ULTIMATE guide to Johannesburg

Johannesburg is unlike anywhere else I’ve been before. As South Africa’s biggest city and one with a rich history, there’s a lot to see, do and experience. Once home to Nelson and Winnie Mandela as well as Desmond Tutu, Jozi offers a wide array of experiences from museums and monuments to bustling hipster neighbourhoods and artisanal markets. From the vibrant streets of Soweto to the restaurants and cafes of Parkhurst , Johannesburg has a lot to offer travellers. If you’re planning a trip or thinking about visiting one day, here’s everything you need to know about Johannesburg travel.

Is it safe for travellers in Johannesburg?

I can only speak to our experience visiting Jo’Burg. We were with a local guide the entire time and didn’t have any scary moments. There wasn’t any point where we felt unsafe or saw something dangerous happen. I understand some local’s and other travellers may have a different experience or opinion, which is why I was unsure what to expect before our trip. But, our experience was nothing but positive. We had an experienced local guide who we listened to and trusted wholeheartedly. We followed the same safety precautions we take when visiting any big city and didn’t have a single safety concern. In my opinion, based solely on the experience I had, I believe travellers can visit Jo’Burg safely.

johannesburg tour itinerary

How to get there

We flew to Cape Town with Singapore Airlines, making our way from Cape Town to Jo’Burg and then back to Singapore again as part of our #SquadSQ trip. Travellers can fly directly from Singapore to Johannesburg with Singapore Airlines and, if you’re planning a trip and need an airline recommendation, Singapore Airlines is the way to go. To break up the trip we flew from Australia to Singapore, where we spent two days exploring, then onward to Cape Town . Our experience was fantastic thanks to Singapore Airlines exceptional service, comfortable seats, delicious food and great entertainment. With a big flight like this one, it was important for us to feel comfortable and be as rested as possible so we could make the most of the time we had when we arrived and going with a full-service airline made all the difference.  Visit Singapore Airlines here.

What’s the best way to see Jo’Burg?

There are a number of reasons to organise a guided tour for your trip to Jo’Burg. Of course, safety is one of them but in addition to that, we found our guide made our experience so much better in general. April had an amazing historical knowledge of all the places we visited, which ensured we learned a wealth of information and gained a deeper appreciation for what we were seeing. Having a guide took the guesswork out of everything as our days were pre-arranged and all we had to do was show up and have a great time. Not only that, but April’s amazing energy, his ability to speak 11 languages, his big and vibrant smile made us feel right at home and enriched our time in Jo’Burg. Our guide was booked through Springbok Atlas Safaris & Tours .

johannesburg tour itinerary

When’s the best time to visit?

We visited in late August/early September and found the weather to be great. It wasn’t too hot or too cold and we had great the weather each day. In general, it’s recommended to visit from around March to May and from September to November as the weather is generally good and there are fewer visitors which means cheaper rates.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Where should I stay in Jo’Burg?

Where you choose to stay in Johannesburg is going to depend on your travel style, personal preferences and budget. We stayed at a hotel in Melrose and, from what I understand, most travellers choose to stay in Melrose and Rosebank . These upmarket areas boast an abundance of gorgeous hotels to choose from as well as loads of great restaurants, cafes and shops nearby. Other popular areas you may like to look at include Sandton, Melville, Rivonia and Bryanston. Now, I mentioned personal preferences at the start of this section and that’s because, when we were in Soweto, we visited a very popular backpackers that looked amazing! So, if you’re after a completely unique experience, Lebo’s looks amazing!

Johannesburg

Planning your dream johannesburg itinerary: 3 days, 5 days, or more.

Johannesburg, the bustling “City of Gold,” offers a wealth of attractions, cultural experiences, and wildlife encounters that make it a dream destination for travelers seeking to explore the heart and soul of South Africa. With a diverse array of activities and places to visit, planning your dream itinerary in Johannesburg can be both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you have just a few days or a more extended stay, this blog will guide you through crafting the perfect Johannesburg itinerary to make the most of your time in this vibrant city and its surrounding regions.

Day 1: Explore the City’s Cultural and Historical Gems

Morning: apartheid museum and constitution hill.

Start your Johannesburg adventure by delving into the country’s history at the Apartheid Museum. This poignant museum offers an immersive journey through South Africa’s struggle against apartheid, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs that shaped the nation. Spend a few hours here, exploring the exhibits and reflecting on the resilience of the people who fought for freedom and equality.

Afterward, head to Constitution Hill, a historic site that once housed a prison complex during the apartheid era. Today, it stands as a symbol of the country’s transformation, serving as the home of the South African Constitutional Court. Take a guided tour to learn about its past significance and the role it plays in South Africa’s democracy today.

Afternoon: Soweto and Vilakazi Street

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Soweto (South Western Townships), one of Johannesburg’s most iconic townships. Take a guided tour to visit historical landmarks such as the Hector Pieterson Memorial and the Regina Mundi Church, both of which played significant roles in the struggle against apartheid. Stroll along Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world that was home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Nelson Mandela, and Desmond Tutu. Explore the bustling markets, taste local cuisine, and engage with the friendly residents to experience the warmth and spirit of this thriving community.

Evening: Newtown Cultural Precinct

As the day comes to a close, head to the Newtown Cultural Precinct for a taste of Johannesburg’s modern cultural scene. This vibrant neighborhood is known for its art galleries, theaters, and lively nightlife. Catch a live performance at one of the theaters or enjoy dinner at one of the trendy restaurants. The precinct comes alive in the evening with street performers and various entertainment options that showcase the city’s creative spirit.

Day 2: Wildlife Encounters and Nature Experiences

Morning: pilanesberg national park.

For wildlife enthusiasts, Day 2 begins with an early departure to Pilanesberg National Park, approximately two and a half hours from Johannesburg. This reserve is a prime destination for a classic African safari experience. Embark on a guided game drive to maximize your chances of spotting the Big Five and other iconic African species in their natural habitat. Take in the breathtaking scenery and marvel at the wonders of the wild as you capture memorable moments on camera.

Afternoon: Lion and Safari Park

After a thrilling morning in Pilanesberg, head to the Lion and Safari Park, just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. This interactive park offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with African wildlife. Join guided tours to see lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs, and interact with hand-reared lion cubs under supervised conditions. The park also features other animals like giraffes and various antelope species, providing an immersive wildlife experience.

Evening: Return to Johannesburg

As the sun sets, make your way back to Johannesburg and enjoy a relaxing evening in the city. Take a stroll through one of the city’s trendy neighborhoods, enjoy a leisurely dinner at a local restaurant, or attend a live performance at one of the theaters. Reflect on the incredible wildlife encounters and nature experiences you’ve had throughout the day.

Day 3: Cultural Immersion and Local Experiences

Morning: maboneng precinct.

Kickstart your day with a visit to the Maboneng Precinct, an artsy neighborhood that celebrates Johannesburg’s creative spirit. Explore contemporary art galleries, marvel at street art, and browse through quirky shops. Maboneng is also known for its lively markets, where you can find artisanal products, trendy fashion items, and delectable street food.

Afternoon: Market Experiences

In the afternoon, venture to one of Johannesburg’s bustling markets to immerse yourself in the local culture. The Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein, held every Saturday, is a foodie’s paradise, offering a wide range of international and local dishes. Sample South African delicacies and engage with friendly vendors as you indulge in a culinary adventure.

For a more traditional market experience, head to the Rosebank Rooftop Market. Perched atop the Rosebank Mall, this market is a treasure trove of handmade crafts, jewelry, clothing, and art. Discover unique souvenirs and support local artisans as you peruse the various stalls.

Evening: Farewell Dinner and Live Music

On your final evening in Johannesburg, celebrate your unforgettable journey with a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Johannesburg offers a diverse culinary scene, so choose a restaurant that showcases the city’s gastronomic delights.

After dinner, consider ending your trip with a live music performance. Johannesburg’s music scene is vibrant and diverse, with venues that host various genres, from jazz to contemporary African beats. Enjoy a night of music and dancing as you soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

Extending Your Stay: Day 4 and Beyond

If you have the luxury of extending your stay in Johannesburg, there are numerous additional experiences and day trips to consider:

Day 4: Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve

Head to the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. This reserve is dedicated to protecting endangered species and offers an opportunity to spot rhinos, lions, cheetahs, and other wildlife. Join a guided game drive or participate in a “Predator Tour” to observe the park’s predators during feeding times.

Day 5: Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre

Visit the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre to learn about cheetah conservation efforts. Take a guided tour to see cheetahs up close and gain insights into the challenges these endangered animals face in the wild. The center also houses other endangered species like African wild dogs and vultures.

Day 6 and Beyond: Day Trips

Consider exploring beyond Johannesburg with day trips to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore ancient caves and learn about human evolution. Alternatively, venture to the Magaliesberg Mountains for hiking and adventure activities, or visit the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden for a serene nature retreat.

With a myriad of cultural experiences, wildlife encounters, and natural wonders, Johannesburg offers a dream itinerary for travelers of all interests. Whether you have three days, five days, or more to explore, the city and its surrounding regions provide a diverse array of experiences that will leave you with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of South Africa.

Remember to plan your itinerary based on your interests and preferences, and don’t forget to leave some room for spontaneity and unexpected discoveries. Embrace the vibrant energy of Johannesburg, connect with its warm and welcoming locals, and savor every moment of your dream journey in the “City of Gold.”

What to see in Johannesburg in 5 days?

Day 1 in johannesburg – city tour.

Start your 5D/4N Johannesburg city tour by first visiting the city’s important historical sites. After breakfast at Sarasota, Spur Steak Ranch make way to the Constitution Hill. Originally built as a military fort, this place was later converted into a prison. A reminder of the country’s tragic history, this prison once housed Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. With an optional quick stop at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, next visit the Arts on Main. Once a no-go zone, Maboneng later went on to become one of the hippest towns in SA. Here you will find many art galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants that will keep your afternoon busy. In the evening, visit the Carlton Centre . Located in downtown Johannesburg, this skyscraper has an observation tower on the top floor which offers sweeping views of the city. Finish off the day with dinner at The Potato Shed. A cozy restaurant with great cocktails.

Day 2 in Johannesburg – Soweto

Make a day trip to Soweto today. But not before stopping at one of the best sites in Johannesburg. After a hearty breakfast, head to The Apartheid Museum . One of the best museums that graphically highlights the apartheid story through its many photos, video footage, artifacts, newspaper cut-outs, and personal accounts. The many temporary and permanent collections here speak volumes about the emotional journey that South Africa went through. Next stop at the Hector Pieterson Museum, a site where Hector Pieterson was killed. Hector was the first student who went on to become a symbol of youth resistance to the apartheid. In Soweto, a visit to Mandela House Museum and Freedom Square is a must. Soweto (short for Southwestern Townships) is best known as a house of country’s both Nobel Prize Winners- Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

Day 3 in Johannesburg – Montecasino, botanical gardens and zoo

Reserve your day 3 of the 5-day Johannesburg tour for entertainment. Montecasino is located about 40 kilometers north of the city and has many entertainment options, thrill games, events, dining, and shopping. The venue is designed to resemble an ancient Tuscan village. Post lunch, make your way back to the city and visit the Johannesburg Zoo . Spread over 55 hectares of land, this zoo is aimed at providing accommodation, enrichment, husbandry, and medical care to over 300 animal species. Later in the evening, visit the Johannesburg Botanical Garden. This park has many plants species and a large rose garden apart from grassy and open green spaces.

Day 4 in Johannesburg – Gold Reef City

Spend an entire day at the Gold Reef City. Located on a site of an old gold mine which closed in 1971, this amusement park has a gold rush theme. The many attractions here include water rides, roller coasters, museum, food courts, gift shops, and Gold Reef City Casino.

Day 5 in Johannesburg – Food and Shopping

Your Johannesburg 5 Days Holiday Package must have an element of food and shopping. On your last day, head to one of the city’s bustling markets to buy the best food and local produce in the country. You can also choose to sign up for a food tour that will take you to all the best places to eat in Johannesburg. The city’s shopping scenes are ever-growing. From modern shopping centers to local markets, there are plenty of avenues to choose from.

This New Luxury Travel Company Features Carbon-neutral Trips to the Dolomites, Victoria Falls, Amazon, and More

The 30 itineraries — all tested by the founders — include adventures in the Seychelles, Rwanda, Dolomites, Yellowstone, and Slovenia.

johannesburg tour itinerary

Katie Katz/Courtesy of Few & Far

Brit Sarah Dusek and her American husband Jacob Dusek have always viewed the world through a lens of possibilities. The couple met in Taipei, Taiwan, nearly two decades ago and started out raising their two sons in Montana — all while they launched what has become one of the preeminent glamping companies in the country, Under Canvas . It disrupted the old standards of rustic camping and replaced it with chic, eco-friendly safari-style tents against the background of some of the most iconic U.S. destinations.

Now they’ve taken that same mindful model of meaningful outdoor experiences into the luxury travel space, debuting a new brand last month: Few & Far . It's a sustainable company dedicated to carbon-neutral exploration. “The heart of all of it is the magical connection there is when people connect with nature in extraordinary ways,” Sarah Dusek told Travel + Leisure.

Each of the 30 itineraries available on the site right now are ones that someone from the Dusek family has experienced first-hand, providing a personal level of curation and paired with a focus on putting sustainability first.

Among her favorite trips offered are the Rwanda Gorilla Trek and Masai Mara Wildlife Adventure , a 12-day itinerary with visits to Kigali and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Masai Mara in Kenya, and Zanzibar in Tanzania. She took a group of female CEOs on the journey last October, saying that “it was absolutely mind-blowing and extraordinary” and that “every single woman on the trip said it was by far the most incredible trip she’s been on.”

Another highlight is the five-day San Juan Islands Tented Camp Experience , a tailored group trip with accommodations set up specifically for each group. On Sarah Dusek’s own visit, she took about eight female CEOs there for a “boutique, five-star tented experience under the stars on a farm,” where they arrived by seaplane and then sea kayaked, hiked, and enjoyed outdoor farm-to-table dinners. The best part: every person could rest assured that their stay used 70 percent less water consumption than staying at an average hotel.

Her own family traveled last Christmas inspired the Enchanting Southern Africa itinerary, a 12-day getaway from Cape Town up to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, before heading to a houseboat on the Chobe River in Botswana. “It was so special because you could be right on the water watching the wildlife morning, noon, and night,” she said. “The boys could fish and we could traverse up and down the Zambezi, experiencing a different view each day.”

After that, the trip boards the luxurious Rovos Rail through Hwange National Park in Bulawayo to Pretoria, before ending in Johannesburg.

Having test-driven every single one of the itineraries on her own is what makes Few & Far’s curation so special. “All of these are very personal to us,” Sarah Dusek said. “They're an expression of who we are — and we love to share them.”

Launching a new travel company was never the intention, with the Duseks selling off Under Canvas in 2019 and moving their family to Cape Town, where they worked as venture capitalists helping empower and fund female entrepreneurs. But they continued to be avid travelers, committed to exposing their sons, now 12 and 15, to as many cultures and perspectives as possible.

During a trip to the Forgotten Mountain’s remote region in northern South Africa’s Limpopo province along the Zimbabwe border, they knew they had stumbled upon something special in UNESCO’s Vhembe Biosphere Reserve . Soon, they had bought a 10,000-acre space, where they’re now set to debut as the 60-room Few & Far Luvhondo eco-lodge at the end of this year. Inspired by weaver bird nests, the site will include a solar-powered aerial experience with a cable car system featuring a 40-kilometer (about a 25-mile) track to provide a uniquely immersive way to explore the African bush and its wildlife.

“We hadn't planned on coming back to the commercial travel space again, but are still so passionate about travel and we still love curating extraordinary experiences,” Sarah Dusek said. “We kept thinking about the safari experience and how to reimagine it for our children and how we could incorporate conservation and travel.”

That forward-thinking eco-first philosophy is what drives all of the Duseks’ efforts. “Outdoor tourism can do so much good,” Sarah Dusek said. “There can be so much harmony with creating an economy, stimulating jobs, preserving wildlife, making sure that our habitats are protected, and that we don't lose biodiversity.”

In fact, through a combination of conservation efforts — largely from tree planting, as well as wetlands management, rewilding, and restoring — the eco-lodge should be on track to sequester as much as 100,000 more tons of carbon a year than it currently does. That’s especially meaningful since the 10,000 acres they own have more biodiversity than in all of Europe.

Additionally, she started looking at the possibilities of helping the rural people, many of whom live in poverty and are generating a revenue stream through tourism. “You start educating people about the difference of what happens when we conserve and protect the land and start investing in the people and then you start to ripple effects in so many levels," she said.

Ultimately, what drives Sarah Dusek is her own dedication to instilling these values in her kids. “I want to show my kids how extraordinary our planet is and I want them to fall in love with it,” she said. “When you're out in it, magic happens and the chances of falling in love with the planet are infinitely greater.”

All of those facets come together in each of the trips through Few & Far — and she hopes that every traveler will be taken by the impact of their adventures. “Travel changes us and has the power to change a belief pattern,” she said. “It shows us that the way we live is not the way everyone lives and maybe not the right way to live.”

In particular that happens the most when she’s out on the great outdoors. “The more time I have spent in the natural world, the more I learn about the people, behaviors, patterns, and cultures in our world,” she said. “That makes us richer and gives us all a chance to realize gosh, all the little things matter.”

For a full list of Few & Far’s trips, which range from $10,000 to $50,000 per trip, visit Few and Far's site .
