Adoptable Kitten Juliet

At Journey's End Animal Sanctuary, we strive to provide a warm, nurturing and fun environment for our animals.  Journey's End provides lifetime care and shelter for dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, and goats.  We have a homelike setting where animals can enjoy their lives in a comfortable, loving atmosphere.  We are not a shelter and we are unable to take in found or stray animals.  We do not rehab or take in  wildlife.  We are currently at a manageable capacity and are not accepting intakes.  While most of our animals are permanent residents, we do have a few animals for adoption.  The sanctuary is located in DeLand, Florida.   We do offer tours of the sanctuary, and are always happy to meet people who want to visit with the animals.  Please give us a call or send an email if you would like to schedule a time to visit us.

According to Journey’s End Animal Sanctuary’s website, the nonprofit provides lifetime care for dogs, cats, horses, pigs and sheep that have been abused, neglected or have special needs.

“Last year, following complaints of inadequate care, Volusia County Animal Services obtained a court order to seize more than a dozen animals that were in urgent need of medical attention,” the county said in a statement. “The case against the facility ultimately was resolved last June with a settlement agreement that required the facility to reduce the number of animals it took in.”

Under that agreement, the county was able to conduct periodic inspections to check on the facility. Since the settlement 15 announced inspections have been conducted at the Mercers Fernery Road property, according to the county. Officers said they observed several violations of the agreement during every inspection, including the failure to provide vaccinations, maintain licenses and adequate care for the animals.

“Throughout this case, Volusia County Animal Services’ focus has been and will continue to be the care and welfare of the animals,” Volusia County Animal Services Director Adam Leath said. “We’re committed to ensuring each animal on the property has access to adequate and humane care.”

Journey’s End Animal Sanctuary settles with Volusia County; animal cruelty case dismissed

Dogs at Journey's End Animal Sanctuary, located near DeLand, flock to Florence Thuot, the nonprofit facility's founder, for love in this file photo from August 2019.

The civil animal cruelty case against Journey’s End Animal Sanctuary and its founder, Florence Thuot, has been dismissed.

Volusia County and Journey’s End, a nonprofit animal facility, reached a settlement agreement on June 25 and the case was dismissed the following day, according to court records.

“The focus of our actions throughout this case has always been on one thing and one thing only — the safety and welfare of the animals,” Kevin Captain, a spokesman for Volusia County, said Wednesday in an emailed statement. “This settlement will result in improved living conditions at the facility while creating a mechanism for ensuring that the animals there receive a proper standard of care.”

Per the settlement, Volusia County will conduct semi-monthly inspections for a year, followed by quarterly inspections. Journey’s End will receive 48 hours’ notice before the inspection during which a board member of the nonprofit may be present.

Journey’s End “will attempt to adopt out those animals suitable for adoption as identified by the county’s assessment, but determined by Journey’s End, who will conduct the independent evaluation,” the settlement states. The facility also will follow National Animal Care and Control Association guidelines “for the proper staffing ratio between employees and animals, and will maintain one additional full-time person above the guidelines.”

Journey’s End has 180 days to reduce the number of animals living at the facility to 90, according to the settlement agreement. During the visit Volusia County officials paid the facility last July, sanctuary staff estimated there were at more than 130 animals, in total, on the premises.

“Those measures will be a big help in improving the conditions at the facility, which is all we were seeking in the first place,” Captain said. “Overall, this is a good resolution for all concerned.”

The entities “reached a good and positive outcome where both parties have focused on the best interest of the animals and going forward will work together to ensure the animals in Volusia County have good resources,” Peri Sedigh, an attorney for the nonprofit, said by phone Tuesday.

The Journey’s End Facebook page posted an update on Saturday, stating that the animals removed earlier this year were home. The post also states that part of the agreement with the county is that the nonprofit pay $25,000 for the boarding of those animals.

Per the settlement agreement, $5,000 must be paid within the first 10 days of the agreement being signed. Thereafter, Journey’s End will pay $5,000 monthly from October through January of next year.

“We're very pleased at how this has turned out, and we're very happy that our animals are back and we look forward to working with the county as we go forward,” said Susan Pynchon, who became president of the nonprofit’s board in February. “The animals are our first priority, and we really do need the help of our community and supporters to ensure the well-being of the animals who are depending on us for their care.”

The settlement agreement also states that Thuot has resigned from service on and active involvement with the nonprofit’s board of directors.

Volusia County filed a petition for the civil case on Jan. 23, a week after Volusia County Animal Services officers, with assistance from the Sheriff’s Office, served a warrant and removed nine cats and seven dogs from the DeLand-area property.

In the six months that led up to the animals’ removal, Volusia County officials went back and forth with Thuot about the conditions at the property and what improvements were needed.

A veterinarian recommended those 16 animals be taken into custody for “medical and/or behavioral care that is not being provided by the facility,” according to records.

The removal of the animals prompted a firestorm of fury on Facebook from Thuot’s supporters and other animal lovers.

Volusia County responded by publicly posting several dozen pages of documents and photos in an effort to show the community why it felt it was time to take action.

While that tempered the anger of some, it didn’t change that Thuot, 92, was heartbroken over the removal of the nine cats and seven dogs.

Thuot founded Journey’s End, 1899 Mercers Fernery Road, more than 40 years ago. Per the nonprofit’s website, the property is a forever home for animals “that have been abused, neglected or have special needs.”

Officials with Volusia County Animal Services began looking into the facility in June 2019 after receiving complaints raising concerns about the animals’ living conditions. Some of the complaints came from individuals who’d worked for or volunteered at Journey’s End.

On July 25, 2019, an order to provide care was issued to Thuot by animal services. The order stated that the facility needed to reduce the number of animals, particularly the cats.

“Per Ms. Thuot, Journey’s End’s mission is to be a hospice rescue for animals that cannot be adopted; however, a large number of all animals observed would not qualify as ‘hospice,’” Jennifer Green, a veterinarian who visited the facility in July 2019, wrote in the forensic veterinary statement. “Therefore, adoption of many of the animals on property could reduce the volume of animals humanely.”

The following month, the nonprofit received a visit from Rachel Barton, the lead shelter veterinarian with Tallahassee Animal Services.

Barton, in her forensic veterinary statement, wrote that the facility had “dangerously exceeded its capacity for care, resulting in undue animal pain and suffering,” and staffing levels were “inadequate to meet the basic needs of the animals each day, let alone their advanced medical needs.”

This is a lovely place hidden in the neighborhood. They are doing such great work here. They provide a loving home to all types of animals. We were here to visit and only had time to visit with the cats. But there were so many cats but they all seemed happy. There was a porch on the cat building where the cats could hang out. I will definitely come back and visit next time I am in town.

What a beautiful place with beautiful souls. I have been here and also volunteered. The animals here are well taken care of and receive more than a roof over their heads! Such a compassionate staff. They have dogs, cats and some friendly farm animals. This is truly a sanctuary, I suggest people go visit and see this place! Volunteers are always welcome! Donations are always needed for this nonprofit. Truly worthy of your donations. The world should have more people like this, loving and compassionate.

Ukrainian Animal Rescuers Make Perilous Journey to Save Pets Near Donetsk Frontline

The perilous journey made by animal rescuers in Ukraine towards the frontlines in Donetsk has been documented by a journalist, who described “intense” shelling nearby as members of Animal Rescue Kharkiv recovered dogs, cats, and other pets.

Alfons Cabrera told Storyful he accompanied the rescuers, Ruslan and Max, on April 21 as they left Kharkiv for Soloviove and Kurakhove in Donetsk. There they met Aliona, he said, an army medic. According to the Institute for the Study of War’s latest control-of-territory map , Soloviove is less than a mile from the latest Russian advances.

Shells can be heard falling and exploding nearby at several points in Cabrera’s footage. “Just lay, because the shrapnel can fly very, very far,” one rescuer can be heard telling Cabrera as they take cover. At one point, Cabrera said, “three projectiles hit nearby” as they drove.

“At the end of the day, they carry in their van eight dogs, eight cats, three goats and a rabbit,” Cabrera told Storyful.

Cabrera said around 1,000 animals have been rescued by Animal Rescue Kharkiv since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Many are offered up for adoption . Credit: Alfons Cabrera via Storyful
