In 'Star Trek: Discovery' the Klingon "Space Jesus" Makes a Big Return

In the very first moments of Star Trek: Discovery , the Klingons mention one name a lot and keep mentioning him for the next two hours. But who is Kahless? Turns out, Kahless is an old Trek reference and the Klingon version of space Jesus.

Over 10 years after the events of Star Trek: Discovery , Captain Kirk and Commander Spock of the U.S.S. Enterprise will grapple with the concepts of good and evil alongside President Abraham Lincoln and Kahless the Unforgettable, a messiah of the Klingon Empire.

T’Kuvma’s (Chris Obi) adoration for the teachings of Kahless the Unforgettable, founder of the Klingon Empire, in Star Trek: Discovery led him and his followers to call the 24 Klingon houses together to take on the United Federation of Planets .

But who, exactly, is Kahless, this mystical Klingon whose conquests still inspire faithful, war-mongering Klingons centuries later?

It’s important to note straight out of the gate: No one’s ever actually seen the real Kahless in any Star Trek series. Throughout the various Star Trek shows and films, Kahless has appeared as a projection and a clone (Kahless II, created by the clerics of Boreth), but his influence has been just that — more of an influence than any sort of real role.

In Season 3, Episode 22 of Star Trek TOS, “The Savage Curtain,” Kirk and Spock battle on the side of “good” alongside Earth’s President Lincoln and Vulcan’s Surak against team “evil,” which includes a projection of Kahless. The laws of honor Kahless imposed upon his people — most of which were aggressive in nature and about how not to be a coward — were considered too violent to be deemed “good.”

After spending his life shaping the traditions and teachings of the Empire he created, Kahless died a near-divine figure and promised the Klingon people that he would, one day, return to lead the Empire to glorious victory once again. Like many in T’Kuvma’s group in Discovery (read: the albino Klingon who became the torchbearer), Kahless wasn’t a highborn leader, but still managed to rise to greatness.

Kahless’ promise of a Messiah-like resurrection clearly had an impact on T’Kuvma, who was looking to reunite the Klingon Empire in Kahless’ name. And if T’Kuvma is truly following in Kahless’ footsteps, then does that mean he’s also expecting a resurrection?

Commander Michael Burnham should hope not, considering she’s the one who fired the kill shot.

Finally: Why 'Star Trek: Discovery' Klingons Look So Different

After months of speculation, it looks like there’s finally a solid explanation for the radical new look for the Klingons on 'Star Trek: Discovery'.

Honor to the Klingon Empire has been restored! After months of speculation, it looks like there’s finally a solid explanation for the radical new look for the Klingons on Star Trek: Discovery .

What Happened

On Thursday, TrekCore excerpted an interview with Discovery writer Ted Sullivan from the magazine SFX.. . In it, Sullivan explains what the new Klingon Sarcophagus ship is all about. “It’s a 200-year-old ship. This is a group of Klingons who’ve gone back to a puritan way of life. They look very different: they wear armor that’s 200 years old and they don’t have any hair,” Sullivan said.” Their commander runs his Klingon house – the house of T’Kuvma – by the rules of Kahless, the Klingon messiah. And he calls himself the second coming of the Klingon messiah.” Sullivan also claimed that this specific Klingon house was one never before seen in any version of Star Teerek.

What It Means

From a production design standpoint, the new Klingons look awesome, but now that they are actually being revealed to be old Klingons, the canon of Star Trek: Discovery can retcon around the cosmetic differences between these Klingons and the more traditional ones seen in the majority of Trek. If these Klingons have been isolated from the rest of their species, the differences in their appearances could be explained. Two-hundredTwo-hundredTwo-hundred years is an interesting figure,,, too, simply because it establishes that Klingons have been capable of interstellar travel way before humans were. The time of the prequel series,,, Star Trek: Enterprise ,,, was in the 2150s. Discovery takes place in the 2250s.

kahless star trek discovery

So quick 200-year-old math means this old Klingon ship is from 2050, only three decades in our own future! The Sarcophagus ship is older than the NX-01 Enterprise and predates the events of Star Trek: First Contact , making it feel like deeper Trek magic from before the dawn of Trek.

What’s Next

All of this could mean there will be several different types of Klingons on Star Trek: Discovery , including the long-haired Next Generation variety. Because the events of Discovery will revolve around the infamous war between the Klingon Empire and the Federation, it looks like there’s a good chance that the encounter with these “Puritan” Klingons will trigger that conflict. Also, because Commander Michael Burnham’s parents were killed by Klingons on the planet Vulcan when she was a child, it stands to reason that those Klingons might look like the ones Star Trek fans are familiar with.

Plus, everyone in real life should also probably get ready for a Klingon invasion in about 30 years.

Star Trek: Discovery hits CBS All Access on September 24.

“Star Trek Discovery: The Light of Kahless” #1

By jaina hill | november 30th, 2017 posted in reviews | % comments.

It’s important to note I’ve really been digging Star Trek Discovery . There’s a lot of criticism for the show floating around, but I like the characters, the stories, and the aesthetics of the latest Trek show. Going into the comic book tie-in, I was excited. Would we learn the backstories of minor characters like Lt. Owosekun or Dr. Culber? Maybe we’d see the experiments of Lt. Stamets or see what happened to Commander Landry that made her such a jerk. Suffice to say, I came away from this first issue disappointed.

Cover by Tony Shasteen Written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson Illustrated by Tony Shasteen Colored by J.D. Mettler Lettered by AndWorld Design Warp into adventure with this new comic book series that ties into the new Star Trek television show premiering in late September on CBS All Access in the U.S., the Space channel in Canada and Netflix throughout the rest of the world! Details remain secretive so we can’t show you covers yet, but we can tell you that you won’t want to miss this very special KLINGON-centric series. Be prepared for action, adventure, and Star Trek at its best! Bullet points: * Co-written by Discovery writer and Trek novelist Kirsten Beyer and longtime Trek comic book writer Mike Johnson! * Art by Star Trek comic book veteran and fan-favorite Tony Shasteen, of the hit series, Boldly Go! * Explore the strange new worlds and new civilizations of Discovery each month! * Each issue features a ‘ships of the line’ cover by Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire! A great first look at the new ships of Discovery!

Really, this is on me. I should have read the entire title of the comic before opening it up. As it happens, this issue is fully titled “Star Trek Discovery: The Light of Kahless.” The Klingon storyline on Discovery is fine, but is definitely one of the weaker aspects of the show. Still, that’s no reason to dismiss a comic out of hand. Plenty of great stories have been told on subjects that seem initially dull or ridiculous. It’s important to assess a comic on its own merits.

Unfortunately, “The Light of Kahless” is dull, duller than a neglected bat’leth. It’s told from the perspective of Voq, the albino Klingon who served as our main Klingon character before disappearing a few episodes into the series. There’s rampant fan speculation as to what’s become of Voq, but if there’s a clue in this issue, it’s too subtle for me. That’s saying something, because I’m far enough down the rabbit hole to know the actor who allegedly plays Voq, Javid Iqbal, translates roughly into English as “live long and prosper.” That’s some top level conspiracy stuff.

None of that plays into the issue. Voq tells his fellow Klingons the story of their fallen leader, T’Kuvma. As it happens, his childhood was full of fighting and brutality. We see he was religious, but the comic doesn’t quite capture the heavy metal magic episodes of the series have. I wasn’t pumping my fist and wishing to be worthy of entering Sto-vo-kor, I was just reading a very typical warrior origin.

OK, the story is a bore, but what about the script? It too falls down on the job. There are two ways this comic could have been written, clearly or theatrically. What it couldn’t be is casual and that’s what a lot of the dialogue feels like. “I will wipe my ass with this armor,” one warrior says in the first few pages, sounding like a douchey bro. Maybe he’s one of those Beverley Hills Klingons who bullies nerds on the beach. None of the characters sound like proud alien warrior vikings, nor do they talk like regular people. They all feel like terrible bros.

The artwork ain’t bad. For the most part. The Klingons are modeled on their updated space-orc design from the new show. There are a lot of characters, and I worried that it would be tough to tell them apart, but Tony Shasteen does a pretty good job at giving every Klingon a different face. Colorist J.D. Mettler nails the different Klingon skin tones, and creates a lot of variety, even within the confines of grey, white, and brown.

That being said, most of the story takes place on the Klingon homeworld of Qo’nos, and it is a dreary place. The surface of Qo’nos has the color palette of the latest Call of Duty shooter, which is to say a lot of brown. The interiors of ships are gorgeous, but we only spend half the issue there. That’s a script problem more than an art problem, but something could have made the Klingon homeworld look more exciting. A storm, a city skyline, anything.

IDW puts out a lot of Star Trek series, and it’s mostly to their detriment. There are a plethora of timelines, ships, crews, eras, and settings could choose from. It’s too much, and each comic series muddies the waters as to what they are all about. “The Light of Kahless” addresses that problem nicely by having a pinpoint focus, but chooses it badly. There’s a reason the Klingons aren’t the main characters of the show. Starfleet is more interesting. There are more personalities, more story potential, not just grunting and violence.

All that is unfortunate, because I still want to read a Discovery series. I’m not totally anti-Klingon, but I want something more than unnecessary backstory. I want characters I can connect with, and a story that feels substantive. I want to explore strange new worlds, and to meet new life, and new civilizations. “The Light of Kahless” is just spinning its wheels until a series comes along that takes off with a hyperdrive.

Final Verdict: 3.2 – “The Light of Kahless” tells a mostly familiar story, but worse.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’s Connection to ‘The Next Generation’ Explained

...And it involves a new crew.

The Big Picture

  • The USS Discovery embarks on a red directive mission with ties to Star Trek lore, focusing on the Progenitors' technology.
  • New faces join the crew on a mission to uncover an artifact related to the Progenitors in the Next Generation era.
  • The technology to create life poses a powerful threat if misused, as Moll and L'ak aim to sell the artifact to the highest bidder.

The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 are finally available on Paramount+, putting Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery back on the boldly going business. This time, they're not going another 800 years into the future, but instead, their mission has a connection to another time: the Star Trek: The Next Generation era. Back then, Captain Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) once led the U.S.S. Enterprise-D on a mission that uncovered the secrets of life itself as we know it . It may have been a one-episode story, but it's now getting the proper arc it deserves; the time has finally come to learn the secrets of the Progenitors.

Star Trek: Discovery

Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.

The Discovery Is Given a Red Directive Mission by Dr. Kovich

The final season of Discovery starts off with its foot on the door, with ties to past Star Trek lore and the return of Dr. Kovich ( David Cronenberg ), which always means business for the Discovery crew. This time, his mission is so important that it interrupts a Starfleet event, but can't be disclosed because it's a red directive (a mission of a highly classified and dangerous nature that takes precedence over all other tasks) . Captain Burnham doesn't like the idea of keeping secrets from her crew, but since the Discovery is the only ship that can take this mission thanks to its spore drive, she accepts it.

The secretive mission introduces some new faces to Discovery , including couriers, Moll ( Eve Harlow ) and L'ak ( Elias Toufexis ), as well as U.S.S. Antares Captain Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ). The mission was to retrieve an artifact from a Romulan science ship that had been adrift for 800 years, but Moll and L'ak beat them to it, then take the artifact to the planet, Q'mau, where the synthetic antique dealer, Fred ( J. Adam Brown ), opens it up and reveals a diary written by the Romulan scientist, Vellek ( Michael Copeman ). Even though Moll and L'ak have escaped Starfleet in Q'mau, Admiral Charles Vance ( Oded Fehr ) helps officer Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) obtain information on Vellek.

As it turns out, Vellek was once part of a group that—under the leadership of Captain Jean-Luc Picard —attempted to solve the mystery of the planet Vilmor II. There, they found out about a race of humanoid aliens known only as the Progenitors , who have created life in its humanoid form and are the common link between all present humanoid species in the galaxy. The Discovery's mission, however, isn't about the Progenitors themselves, but rather about the technology they used to do what they did.

The Progenitors’ Story Comes From a Single Episode in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’

Season 6, Episode 20 of The Next Generation , "The Chase," is one of the wildest in the entire series. For the first time ever, a Star Trek episode shows Humans, Klingons, Romulans, and more together in the same scene. That's all thanks to one of the most interesting plots in the franchise, which sees these races coming together to discover the secret of their common origin. Unfortunately, The Next Generation didn't carry on with this plotline, but Discovery is finally giving it the sequence it deserves.

"The Chase" starts off with Captain Picard meeting his old mentor, Professor Galen ( Norman Lloyd ), aboard the Enterprise-D. The scholar is there to recruit Picard for a long-term mission that will result in the most important scientific discovery of their time, but Picard can't give up his post on Starfleet. Picard decides to take the Enterprise-D and finish what Galen started. He begins by analyzing the data his mentor had gathered (large blocks of numbers laid out in a sort of sequence). Following this trail, he eventually discovers that the numbers are actually a DNA sequence. On the planet, Loren III, Picard intervenes and mediates their conflict upon learning that both of them are there for the same reason the Enterpreise-D is, calling for them to analyze the combined DNA strands they have. They learn that those are all part of a puzzle, with each sequence complementing one another, but that there are still missing pieces.

The Enterprise-D follows the Cardassians to Vilmor II with the Klingon emissary on board, and they find out the planet has lichen growing on the dried-up ocean floor. Discreetly, Dr. Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden ) inserts all the DNA samples they now have onto her tricorder, which then projects the recording of a humanoid woman ( Salome Jens ). Thankfully, everyone stops arguing to listen to the projection, as the woman explains that she belonged to a race of ancient aliens from 4.5 billion years earlier. Her species eventually came to terms with their extinction, but they sowed pieces of their own DNA on many planets where life could grow across the galaxy as a way of ensuring a lasting legacy . Their intention was for all those future species to come together upon discovering their shared ancestry . Cardassians and Klingons immediately resume their bickering, unable to accept that they have anything in common. Later, Picard ponders with the Romulans that one day, in the future, perhaps all species will learn to coexist for the sake of their shared ancestry.

Where Does This Leave Captain Burnham and the Discovery Crew?

The race of ancient humanoids is never named onscreen, but they are referred to as the Progenitors from then on. With Discovery finally finishing this loose thread in Star Trek lore, it's important to ponder that the Progenitors must have used powerful tech to sow their DNA across the galaxy, which is what the overall plot of the season is going to be. The technology to create life is powerful by definition , and can be used for terrible things if it falls in the wrong hands. Right now, Moll and L'ak have the diary, but they're unwilling to cooperate with the Federation after a failed negotiation attempt by Cleveland "Book" Booker ( David Ajala ). However, they're looking to sell the diary to the highest bidder.

After the events of the first part of the season premiere , "Red Directive," Captain Rayner has been discharged from his command of the U.S.S. Antares. As sad as it is to see an officer of 30-plus years being discharged, it's also very serendipitous, as Captain Burnham is in need of a new number one for the Discovery as Saru ( Doug Jones ) is about to take a new diplomatic post for the Federation. During their chase on Q'mau, Rayner mentions that he has history chasing Moll and L'ak, which will surely come in handy . Also, Book finds out he has a past connection to Moll that makes them all but family, which is another potential lead to finding her.

9 star trek characters who can hide discovery season 5 treasure hunt clues.

The race is on for Star Trek: Discovery season 5's treasure hunt, and the remaining clues could be hiding with characters from Star Trek's past.

  • The search for Progenitor technology in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 involves collecting 5 physical clue pieces that form a puzzle.
  • The USS Discovery crew already has 2 clues, obtained after proving the 32nd century Federation is ready to wield the technology.
  • The answers to the mystery may go beyond the physical clues, found in the very nature of life itself.

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 serves as a season-long sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase", and revisits the concept first that a single ancient humanoid race called the Progenitors seeded life across the Star Trek galaxy. Once discovered in the 24th century, the Federation President secretly gathered a team of scientists to study the Progenitors' technology but deemed it too dangerous for their own time. The team, which included Romulan Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeland), hid a series of clues leading to the Progenitor technology's location , with the hope that future generations would prove worthy enough to wield it.

Dr. Vellek's notes point to Promellian ruins on the planet Lyrek, which reveal a clue pointing to Trill. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3 , "Jinaal", the Trill clue was hidden on Trill by Jinaal Bix, a scientist and host of the Bix symbiont who was a colleague of Dr. Vellek's. Just as the structures on Lyrek are guaranteed to last, the Trill symbiont Bix is also still alive after 800 years. The remainder of Star Trek: Discovery season 5's clues need to stand the test of time, and might be found with any number of Star Trek characters who could still be around in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

9 zora (annabelle wallis), discovery's computer could answer the mystery of her own sentience..

One of the clues to Progenitor technology may be found aboard the USS Discovery itself, buried deep within its own computer systems. Discovery's computer downloaded a hundred thousand of years of intergalactic data from the Sphere in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, in order to protect the information from the genocidal A.I, called Control. As a result, Discovery's computer develops sentience in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, choosing the name Zora.

The sheer amount of knowledge Zora possesses may lead to one of Star Trek: Discovery 's answers.

With the question of how sentient life is created at the center of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Zora herself may hold at least part of a clue. Although it's impossible for Zora to be part of the race planned by Dr. Vellek's team in the 24th century, the sheer amount of knowledge Zora possesses may lead to one of Star Trek: Discovery 's answers, whether to the Progenitor technology's location or how it works to imbue life forms with sentience.

8 The Guardian of Forever (Paul Guilfoyle)

A final clue might be in the progenitors' past..

The Guardian of Forever was first seen in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1, episode 28, "The City on the Edge of Forever", as a sentient gateway through time. To obtain the Trill piece of the puzzle in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa-Martin Green) must pass Jinaal's test to prove that people in the 32nd century are responsible enough to use the Progenitor technology wisely. One way this could happen is if the Guardian of Forever allows Burnham to pass through time to meet the Progenitors themselves, so the creators of all sentient humanoid life can decide for themselves if their own creations are worthy.

There's a precedent for the Guardian of Forever in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century . The Guardian appeared as a human named "Carl" in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, episode 9, "Terra Firma, Part 1", to administer a cosmic test to Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). Upon passing the test, Georgiou was allowed to return to an earlier time by entering the Guardian of Forever's gateway.

Michelle Yeoh will return as Emperor Philippa Georgiou in the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 made-for-streaming movie on Paramount+.

7 Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks)

Time isn't real to the emissary of the bajoran prophets..

At the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) fulfills the duties of the Bajoran Emissary and becomes one with the Prophets, the non-corporeal aliens native to the Bajoran wormhole. Time has no meaning for the Prophets, who exist throughoutwithout a sense of linear progression from past to present to future. As an entity on their level, Sisko also ceases to experience linear time, and can exist at any point in the Star Trek timeline ; as the Prophets' Emissary, Sisko is the one who would speak on their behalf to the corporeal world, but to Bajor in particular.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 22, "Explorers", suggests that Cardassians and Bajorans were once one people, just as TNG 's "The Chase" proves that all sentient humanoid life had a single origin with the Progenitors. As one of the species present to hear the Progenitor speak in "The Chase", Cardassians may have had a representative in the 24th-century science team studying the Progenitors' technology . Even if Sisko doesn't return as the Emissary, it would still make sense to link the wormhole aliens in the answer to the question about the origin of life.

The Progenitor hologram revealed the origin of life to the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, and Cardassians in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase".

6 Q (John de Lancie) or Q Junior (Keegan de Lancie)

A game that leads to incredible power is right up q's alley..

The Q Continuum was certainly around at the time the Federation science team needed to disperse their clues to Progenitor technology in the 24th century, and as an immortal being with a vested interest in the worthiness of humanity, John de Lancie's Q might even be interested in being part of the treasure hunt that Vellek and his colleagues designed for the future. Q's apparent demise in Star Trek: Picard season 2 was seemingly negated by Q's Picard season 3 appearance , but Q's son (Keegan de Lancie), from Star Trek: Voyager season 7, episode 18, might take up his father's mantle of poking at the Federation.

The Federation of the 32nd century has had "no contact with the Q Continuum for 600 years."

Although Q is certainly immortal enough to hold one of Star Trek: Discovery season 5's clues, there's the small matter of what happened to Q in Star Trek: Discovery , because the Federation of the 32nd century has had "no contact with the Q Continuum for 600 years," according to Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 5, "The Examples."

5 Great Lessons Star Trek: Discovery Learned From Picard Season 3

5 soji asha (isa briones), synthetic life forms can live for centuries..

The Progenitor technology creates life, but synthetically created life is already a part of Star Trek , in the form of androids like Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner), and Star Trek: Picard 's Soji Asha (Isa Briones) . Soji was created by Dr. Bruce Maddox (John Ales) and Dr. Altan Inigo Soong (Brent Spiner), based on the work of Alton's father, Dr. Noonien Soong (Brent Spiner). After Soji declined to join the android colony on Coppelius at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 1, Soji was last seen in Picard season 2, episode 1, "The Stargazer".

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive", introduces a 600-year-old synth named Fred (J. Adam Brown), who looks like Data and is based on Alton Soong's work. Unlike Fred, Soji appears human in every conceivable way but is still an android, so unlikely to age like the golems inhabited by Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Discovery 's Gray Tal (Ian Alexander). It's possible Soji could be alive in the 32nd century, like her cousin Fred, and might be connected to the life-giving nature of Progenitor technology.

Isa Briones also played Soji's twin sister Dahj in Star Trek: Picard season 1 and Kore Soong in Star Trek: Picard season 2.

4 A 32nd Century Changeling

There could be a connection between the changelings and the progenitors..

When they take a humanoid shape, the Changelings in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine bear a strong resemblance to the Progenitors, the creators of the powerful technology at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5's treasure hunt. Part of this is due to the same actress, Salome Jens, playing both the Progenitor in Star Trek: The Next Generation and DS9 's female Changeling leader, but there may be something more primal at work. Maybe the Changelings' Great Link could contain the basic building blocks of life as it's known in Star Trek , given solid form by the Progenitors' technology.

Star Trek: Picard filled in the gap between what happened with the Changelings between the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Picard season 3, and the appearance of a Changeling in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 8, "All In", proved that Changelings survived through the 24th century and into Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century . Not much is known about what happened to the Changelings after the end of Star Trek: Picard , however, so if a Changeling possesses a clue in Discovery season 5, the rest of that story might be told.

Actress Salome Jens plays both the Progenitor in TNG and DS9 's female Changeling leader.

3 The Doctor (Robert Picardo)

Voyager's emh is a likelier candidate than you think..

In Star Trek: Voyager season 4, episode 23, "Living Witness", a backup program of the USS Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram is reactivated in the 31st century, proving that the Doctor's program can actually last for centuries without degradation. The events of "Living Witness" take place 700 years in Star Trek: Voyager 's future, estimated to be around 3074. Star Trek: Discovery 's Burn happens circa 3069, placing both events in roughly the same time period of the Star Trek timeline .

Through Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), Jinaal explains to Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Dominion War was raging while Jinaal's team was studying the Progenitor technology. Although the USS Voyager doesn't return home until after the war, the Doctor makes contact with the Alpha Quadrant prior to the end of the Dominion War. In Star Trek: Voyager season 4, episode 14, "Message in a Bottle", the EMH is sent via subspace to the USS Prometheus, which is being commandeered by Romulans. Could one of those Romulans plant a clue deep within the Doctor's subroutines? It's a stretch, but it's not impossible.

2 Commander Pelia (Carol Kane)

Strange new worlds' lanthanite engineer has been around forever..

As a Lanthanite, Commander Pelia has already lived a long time before becoming the USS Enterprise's Chief Engineer in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and may actually be functionally immortal. After all, Commander Pelia looks pretty much the same age in the 23rd century and in the 21st, when Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) meets the younger Pelia in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3 , "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow".

After living for centuries, it's entirely likely that Pelia is still around in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, and could have even been part of the Federation committee studying Progenitor technology in the 24th century. Even though it'd be a far cry from starship engineering, Pelia's interest in ancient artifacts and long, long memory of the past might make Pelia a prime candidate to possess a link to the search for Progenitor technology in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

When Star Trek: Discovery Takes Place In Star Trek's Timeline (Every Season)

1 wesley crusher (wil wheaton), the travelers could be the ones guiding the progenitors..

Wesley Crusher appears at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 2 as a Traveler, confirming Wesley's fate at the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, episode 20, "Journey's End". As an ascended being who exists uncoupled from the constraints of time and space, Wesley's powers as a Traveler could let Wesley appear in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century.

It's likely that the Travelers, and Wesley in particular, could be connected to the origin of life in the galaxy.

The Travelers' mission is never made completely clear during the first Traveler's (Eric Menyuk) appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but Wesley reveals to Kore Soong (Isa Briones) in Star Trek: Picard that the Travelers are committed to ensuring the survival of sentient species, with an added implication that the Travelers have a guiding hand in the development of the universe. With such a strong connection to space-time, and the ability to focus pure thought into creation, it's likely that the Travelers, and Wesley in particular, could be connected to the origin of life in the galaxy.

The Travelers are committed to ensuring the survival of sentient species.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's search for Progenitor technology involves collecting 5 physical clue pieces that form a puzzle, though a 6th clue could exist if the exterior ring on the puzzle's shape is included. The USS Discovery crew already has 2 clues, obtained after Captain Michael Burnham proved to Romulan and Trill scientists that the 32nd century Federation is ready to be found . The bearers of the remaining clues might require Burnham to pass similar tests, according to their own definitions of ready, but the answers to the mystery of Progenitor technology in Star Trek: Discovery may well be beyond the physical clue pieces, found in the very nature of life itself.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 2 sows the seeds of seasonal plot threads (Under the Twin Moons recap)

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 2

So, as you will have gathered from watching Star Trek: Discovery's episode 1 of season 5 ,  it would appear that the primary plot is based on a past episode of "The Next Generation" (TNG). Yes indeed, no new "Star Trek" show is safe from nostalgia — and very specifically — TNG-era nostalgia. Any storyline, from any previous incarnation of " Star Trek " could've been used, but it cannot denied that it feels like we're being given what Terry Matalas and the other executive producers who are still obsessed with living in the past want, which is to relive their teens.

The thing is, there's nothing wrong with TNG and if you watch the episode that all of this seems to be stemming from, "The Chase" (S06, E20) it's actually a pretty good installment. And in fact, it has a " Babylon 5 " quality and uses dialogue and straightforward set pieces to tell an interesting, nuanced story. (Aside from at least from one significant plot hole that is not explained.) But that was then — April 1993, to be precise — and this is now. And while it might have been fun to revisit this in a TNG-era movie for example, this ship really has passed. If you're need a refresher on how to watch Star Trek: Discovery, you can check out our Star Trek streaming guide for Paramount Plus .

The episode "The Chase" is a fun explainer as to why all the humanoid aliens look the same. Obviously, it's all to do with budget in the real world, but in the Star Trek universe it's because a super-advanced race of aliens — unofficially referred to as Progenitors — opted to scatter different parts of our DNA across the galaxy, which when fully evolved over millions of years time, came to form humans, Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans and the rest. When DNA strands from all of these races are combined, it unlocked a ancient holographic message.

"Life evolved on my planet before all others in this part of the galaxy. We left our world, explored the stars, and found none like ourselves. Our civilization thrived for ages, but what is the life of one race, compared to the vast stretches of cosmic time?" the unnamed humanoid alien said. "We knew that one day we would be gone, that nothing of us would survive. So, we left you. Our scientists seeded the primordial oceans of many worlds, where life was in its infancy ... The seed codes also contained this message, which we scattered in fragments on many different worlds. It was our hope that you would have to come together in fellowship and companionship to hear this message."

The potential of this was pretty big, but it was never followed up. It was rumored there might even be a connection to the Changling race and it was talked about in chat groups ... 15 years ago . And while this was a certainly an opportunity left open-ended, ready to be revisited after having been found by writers scrambling for ideas, it's also interesting to note that "The Chase" was directed by Jonathan Frakes, who as we know, is still very much involved with Nu-Trek.

Back to "Discovery" season 5, episode 2 and possibly the biggest single, burning question is, will Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) met a death as utterly pointless as Captain Shaw, Huw and Cristóbal Rios? And now with Captain Saru (Doug Jones) leaving the USS Discovery and Raynor taking his place as first officer, Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) now at least has an antagonist close by for this adventure.

This second episode feels a little less lost than the season premiere, although it relies rather heavily on the classic bureaucracy trope, something, you'd have to believe we'd really been able to get past in the 32nd century. Guess not. Staying with Rayner though, if his appointment to become the new First Officer of the USS Discovery just turns out to be another underused, Tarka-style antagonist, it will be a spectacular missed opportunity. But, "Discovery" does keep us guessing, that much is certain. Who'd have thought an socially awkward alien would cause all the dilithium in the galaxy to explode ?

There are some interesting set pieces in this episode, but let's hope we don't dwell on the whole breadcrumb-trail to alien artifacts theme too long. Also, where the blazes does the energy and the matter come from to instantly form replacement phasers? Just wonderin' like. But, on the plus side, Grudge is back and so is Zora.

In other "Star Trek" news, production on the new "Star Trek: Section 31" television movie starring Michelle Yeoh has started principal photography. Paramount Plus posted a pic on Instagram and Variety released a still. In addition to Yeoh, the cast includes Omari Hardwick ("Powers"), Kacey Rohl ("Hannibal"), Emmy Award winner Sam Richardson ("Ted Lasso"), Sven Ruygrok ("One Piece"), Robert Kazinsky ("Pacific Rim"), Humberly Gonzalez ("Ginny & Georgia") and James Hiroyuki Liao ("Barry").

However, the most interesting news is that the story appears to be set in the "lost era" of "Star Trek" — between the events of the Kirk-era movie, "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" and the TV series TNG. Arguably the most underused and interesting field of opportunity within the "Star Trek" franchise...and Kacey Rohl ("Arrow") has also joined the project as a young Rachel Garrett, the future captain of the USS Enterprise-C, from the epic TNG episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" (S03, E15) where the character was previously portrayed by Tricia O’Neil.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US while "Prodigy" has found a new home o n Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on Paramount Plus in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on Paramount Plus in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

The Progenitors from the TNG episode "The Chase" (S06, E20) could provide a plot backdrop for this season

Don’t give Terry Matalas any ideas, the first season of the Picard spinoff would feature the Organians, Douwd, and Metrons, oh my!

the Titan book that followed up on the Douwd / Husnock story was great. I wish they would just adapt the already great stories that have in the books, but that would be too easy and make too much sense….

I’d personally be okay with that haha.

Is that Nicholas Cage!? Looks like Nicholas Cage.
