Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Kakadu National Park?

Most of our Kakadu tours start in Darwin, which is also the closest city to Kakadu National Park. If you're coming from another state or from overseas, the best option is to fly to Darwin International Airport (DRW) and then drive to Kakadu (approx. 1 hour 45 minutes).

When is the best time to visit Kakadu National Park?

The best time to visit depends on the activities you want to do and your tolerance for heat, humidity and rain. If you’re not a fan of 35°C+ temperatures, the cooler months of May to August are your best option. The dry season is also better for swimming as heavy rains can cause flash flooding, making some areas unsafe or inaccessible.

That being said, the wet season is usually quieter, which may suit you if you’d prefer to share the park with fewer people.

How many national parks are in Northern Territory?

The Northern Territory boasts 24 national parks. From captivating waterfalls to jaw-dropping landscapes, here are a few of our favourite Northern Territory national parks:

What to pack for Kakadu and The Top End

There are a few essential items you'll need for a Top End adventure. Make sure you pack comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a day bag, and a reusable drink bottle. You should also carry a mini first aid kit with you, as well as your camera and a visitor guide to the national parks you plan on visiting.

Can I use my mobile phone in Kakadu National Park?

Due to Kakadu National Park's remote location, there will be less service (and often no service) than in other more populated areas. This doesn't mean there's absolutely no service, though.

You'll find mobile coverage in Jabiru and Cooinda, as well as at the Bowali Visitor Centre, although remember to keep in mind that this is a perfect opportunity to disconnect and embrace the Aussie wilderness.

Can I swim in Kakadu National Park?

The short answer is yes. However, you need to take note of a few precautions before racing to the water’s edge as it can be dangerous if you don’t know what to look out for.

Kakadu is a tropical destination with two major seasons: hot and wet (November to March), and hot and dry (April to October). The wet season poses more risks for swimming as some areas are susceptible to flash flooding and rapid currents during heavy rain. Some waterways are also home to crocodiles.

5 Day Kakadu Katherine Litchfield 4WD Adventure (Camping)

The guide,Jay, was excellent the vehicle was comfortable. Some of the accommodation was poor. While it did state shared bathroom 2 toilet cum showers for 10 people to share wasn’t great. Apparently there were upgrades available but that was not an option we were offered. The last night hotel in Darwin was very nice.

Great trip! Exceeded expectations. Three national parks, the walks and the waterfalls were breathtaking. But the bonus was we had an awesome group. A range of ages, nationalities and even within the Aussie’s we were from different states … but all pitched in with the meals and jobs. We had much fun when back at the campsite. Would recommend the trip! Rick our tour guide was very accommodating and also made the trip. Thank you!

Beautiful scenery, fascinating aborigeneous culture and traditions, amazing group of people. We really got on very well. Food could have been better for the price we paid. Excellent guide. Jay was terrific. We all appreciated her kindness and enthusiasm. Coming back to Darwin at the end of the fourth day was unnecessary. It added a lot of mileage for nothing. Plus a hotel room in Darwin that was probably not cheap.

Nat was sensational, fantastic leader, sharing passionately her extensive knowledge and experience of aboriginal culture, flora, fauna etc. Truck was not great, limp mode, so slow and hot.

Tour guide & coach driver very good. Accommodation very good. Not sure how it could be organised on this tour, but needed a bit more down time or time on our own to relax. Out early most days & late afternoon arrival at motels.

We have visited the top end and done a few of these tours, including a great five-day camping tour. We struggled to choose our tours each time, so we thought we would share a few of our favourite tours from Darwin to Kakadu and give you the pros and cons of each and help you choose the best Kakadu trip for your needs.

If you have plenty of time a self-drive tour can be a great option but if you don’t have a four-wheel drive or this is your first time in the outback or you only have a few days to spare a Kakadu tour organised by a local specialist is hard to beat.

Kakadu National Park is one of only three sites in the world that are both World Heritage Area and UNESCO sites, recognising thousands of years of indigenous culture .

Don’t underestimate how much time it takes to explore Kakadu, the park is half the size of Switzerland

This AAT Kings 1 day Kakadu tour is one of the more expensive tours on our list, but this 13 hour-long journey comes with everything included. It’s also one of the few that allows kids under 5 years (min. 2 yrs).

The tour is suitable for young children and wheelchair users who have some help as while there is wheelchair access; the ground is uneven in some parts. There is little walking with only about 15 minutes to the viewing point at Nourlangie.

OK, so this is not sticktly a Kakadu tour, but rather a top end tour, however it is such a great experience we need to include it here for the adrenaline junkies among you.

If visiting the top end is a bucket list experience for you, then this is your tour. From a scenic helicopter flight over Litchfield National Park, an airboat ride into the rain and a chance to watch National Geographic’s ‘Outback Wrangler’, Matt Wright feeds a rescued crocodile.

Cruise Sweets Lagoon ‘Cyclone Creek’ whilst enjoying lunch, then enjoy a swim in Australia’s only nature-based croc safe pool.
