The Ultimate Travel Guide to Kangaroo Valley

  • Getting there
  • eat & drink
  • destinations

Bright green paddocks, dense rainforest and the still, snaking Kangaroo River, for which the village is named after – Kangaroo Valley on the NSW South Coast truly is a delight for weekenders and holidaymakers alike, with most of them coming from Sydney or Melbourne, both a cruisey, two-hour drive away. Spend your days here learning its history on a self-guided walking tour, working up a sweat on one of its many nature trails or, in summer, cooling off in its waterfalls Fitzroy Falls or Belmore Falls or one of its many streams or rivers. At night, sit outside and admire its starry skies, or curl up indoors by a fire with a glass of red from the region. However you spend your time here, you’ll no doubt leave feeling rested and reinvigorated – and maybe even with a pie (or two) to take home.

The best way to get to Kangaroo Valley is to drive from Sydney or Canberra, both roughly two hours’ away. Coming from Sydney? For scenic coastal views, not to mention the option for a pit stop in the charming country town of Berry, tack on an extra 20 minutes’ drive time and opt to take the Grand Pacific Drive/M1 instead of the more direct route via Hume Highway/M31.

There’s something to be enjoyed in Kangaroo Valley in every season. In the winter, its moderately chilly temperatures are ideal for bushwalking, visiting nearby wineries and night-time log fires. In summer, swim, kayak or canoe in its river or streams. The weather in spring and autumn is temperate, allowing for picturesque scenes of colourful bush flowers springing to life and burnt orange and red leaves littering the ground.

14 best things to do in Kangaroo Valley in 2024 including wombats!

Kangaroo Valley was the first weekend trip I ever did from Sydney and it set the bar high, there are loads of things to do in Kangaroo Valley, great places to eat and, most importantly, Kangaroo Valley is one of the best places in Australia for spotting wombats in the wild.

Kangaroo Valley is the area of New South Wales between the Southern Highlands and the South Coast. It’s only 2.5 hours from Sydney making it a great weekend getaway or day trip if you don’t mind a bit of driving time.

The Valley is relatively small but incredibly scenic and in the middle you’ll find a small town also called Kangaroo Valley. The town has the historic, almost Gold-rush era, vibes common around the Southern Highlands. It only really has one main street but there are enough Kangaroo Valley attractions, cafes, restaurants and shops to keep you busy for a few days.

If you’re thinking about planning a trip to Kangaroo Valley, this guide has you covered with 14 of the best activities in and around Kangaroo Valley plus recommendations on where to eat in Kangaroo Valley and the best places to stay in Kangaroo Valley.

Looking for other places to see kangaroos in Australia? Kangaroo Island is a great place to go.

Best Things To Do In Kangaroo Valley

1 – spot wombats around kangaroo valley.

I am a bit obsessed with wombats. Who wouldn’t be, they’re adorable.  They’re also not that easy to find outside of zoos. Fortunately, Kangaroo Valley is one of the best places to spot wombats in the wild (the other is Tasmania, heading there soon!).

You’ll see signs warning of wombats along the roadside throughout the approach to Kangaroo Valley. However, to find wombats in Kangaroo Valley, your best bet is to go to the Bendeela Picnic Area around dusk.

Wombats are mostly nocturnal, so you’ll have the best chance of seeing them if you go in the early evening. They’re also shy so you usually need to go hunting for wombats away from the main camping area.

We were very lucky and saw one on the drive in,  a big fluffy boy who’d gone for an afternoon stroll and didn’t seem to mind the crowd of campers he was attracting. Check him out!

2 – Taste fudge at the Kangaroo Valley sweet shops

For some reason, Kangaroo Valley seems to specialise in fudge, or at least there’s quite a bit around for a very small town. To satisfy your sweet tooth, go to Kangaroo Valley House and Ice Creamery on the main road or Sweet As beyond The General Store. Or grab a few flavours from both and do your own taste testing.

I 100% recommend the cookies and cream flavour. For something more ‘Australian’ go for the bush honey and macadamia option. This is one of the best things to do in Kangaroo Valley with kids for sure!

3 – Listen to live music at the pub

The Friendly Inn Hotel is Kangaroo Valley’s biggest pub. It’s huge and covers all bases from the standing bar upstairs to the family picnic table and playground on the lawn.  It backs onto a park and they often have live music set up on weekends which makes it a great place to visit in Kangaroo Valley on a sunny day to chill out with some food and drink and have a laid-back afternoon.

The food offering includes all the usual Australian pub fare including a decent chicken parmy.

The Friendly Inn Pub, one of the bets places to eat in Kangaroo valley

4 – Photograph the Hampton Bridge

The bridge is Kangaroo Valley’s most recognisable landmark and makes a good photo-op. Made of sandstone it looks like the entrance to an English castle. You will drive over it on the way to/from the village and you can learn more about the history of the area at the Pioneer Museum just across the bridge from the village.

On the other side, there are a few cute boutiques worth a browse as well as The General Store which does the best brunch in Kangaroo Valley and stocks all the local specialties.

5 – Organise your own Southern Highlands winery tour

The Southern Highlands around Kangaroo Valley is one of the lesser-known wine regions in Australia , but you can definitely find some good wine here.  The most popular winery in the area is Yarrawa Estate which is close to Kangaroo Valley village. They also have a café and grow their own fruit and nuts which you can try alongside your wine.

Other wineries worth a visit include Silos Estate and Lyrebird Ridge. The shiraz is the main event in this region, but you’ll also find more unusual varieties such as Verdelho and Chambourcin.

6 – Browse the book barn

Berkelouw Book Barn has made a name for itself as a Southern Highlands destination and is now a popular wedding venue. This place is a must visit in Kangaroo Valley if you’re a big reader like me, as they really do have a barn full of books.  The books are mostly second-hand but some new as well and you can find a few bargains in there.

You can easily spend a few hours perusing the shelves and when you’re done just plop down at a table for a coffee or to enjoy the restaurant’s excellent menu.  This is one of the best high-end dining spots in the area.

7 – Chase waterfalls in Kangaroo Valley

When it comes to waterfalls in Kangaroo Valley, there are a few options, but Fitzroy Falls are not to be missed. You’ll find these just off the main road between Kangaroo Valley and Moss Vale, keep a close eye out so you don’t miss the turn. There is a small charge ($4) for parking at Fitzroy Falls.

From the carpark, follow the track along the cliffside for a short walk until you get to the viewing platform. Anyone with vertigo will want to stay well back from the edge but the views over the falls are fantastic.

You don’t have to walk far from the parking/picnic area to see the falls cascading over the cliff but there are longer walks around the West Rim (3.5km) and East Rim (6.5km) if you’re keen to get more exercise in on your Kangaroo Valley trip.

There are lots of other waterfalls in the area that are only a short drive from Kangaroo Valley, try Belmore Falls or Gerringong Falls for stunning photos, Visiting waterfalls is a good option on hotter days as it’s cooler in the bush surrounding the falls.

For a truly unforgettable experience, you can splurge on a 30 minute helicopter flight over the waterfalls , leaving from nearby Illawarra.

8 – Play oversized chess or golf

The Kangaroo Valley Golf Course is a great place to stay and hang out, especially with kids or oversized kids.  There are giant chess, tennis courts, volleyball courts and a swimming pool as well as the 18-hole golf course.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab lunch from the historic Woolshed restaurant and have a picnic near the green.

9 – Take a walk around Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley feels like the kind of place where you could just start walking in any direction and have a good time exploring, probably even spot some wildlife on the way (wombats! kangaroos!). But if you want a great view to justify the steps then head to the unimaginatively named The Lookout on Cambewarra Mountain. From this spot, you’ll get great views of the Kangaroo Valley/Shoalhaven area.

For a longer hike, try the Three Views Walk, this adds up to 9.5km if you do all three walks. Just watch out for snakes in summer!

10 – Kayak the Kangaroo River

This is one of the best activities in Kangaroo Valley, especially for adventure tourism types. There are lots of companies offering kayak hire and tours in the area and you can really choose your own adventure here. The Kangaroo Valley Canoes, Cool Climate Wines and Canapés Tour is a great option if you want to combine your kayak with some local food and wine.

You can choose to go for a lazy paddle towards Bendeela or commit to a multi-day safari from Kangaroo Valley to Shoalhaven Gorge or Tallowa Dam (each a 2-day trip which you can do fully supported). Whatever you go for, this is one of the best and most peaceful ways to see the Kangaroo Valley area.

You can easily combine activities here by paddling to Bendeela where you might spy a wombat from the water or can ditch the kayak for a swim.  Plan around the weather so you aren’t out in the hottest part of the day in summer. There are some one-way options so you can avoid paddling upriver, but

11 – Go to Berry for shopping and donuts

Berry is another cute small town in the Southern Highlands that’s close to Kangaroo Valley. You might even pass through on your way to/from Kangaroo Valley. It’s become famous for the Berry Donut Van, now a town institution found at the end of the main road. Grab a bag of hot cinnamon-y donuts for the road or stop and enjoy while you wander the boutiques.

12 – Search for kangaroos

It is Kangaroo Valley after all! Fortunately, the kangaroos are easier to find than the wombats so you’re not at risk of going home without spotting one.

Kangaroos can often be seen bopping along beside the road on your way to, from or around Kangaroo Valley. You’ll see lots of wildlife signs on the roadside alerting you to the areas where sightings are common, and animals might be crossing. Make sure to drive carefully!

13 – Go swimming in a watering hole

If you went wombat-spotting at Bendeela (number 1 on the list!) then you might’ve seen kids jumping in the river for a swim.  This is a decent spot if you want to cool off on a hot day, but you can find quieter swimming holes near Carrington Falls.

For an ocean swim, head to nearby Shell Harbour beach.  They also have pretty good fish and chips there if you want to make a day of it and picnic on the beach.

14 – Do a local cooking class

Don’t just eat the local produce, learn to cook with it too! At Hampden Deli, located in the centre of Kangaroo Valley, you can learn all the tricks from a chef with experience in Hatted and Michelin-starred restaurants. Classes are held on Saturdays and follow a different theme each month.

If you aren’t up for donning an apron, then enjoy dining in the courtyard restaurant or browsing the deli. Either way, you’ll get to taste the best food the Kangaroo Valley area has to offer.

How to get to Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley is located between Sydney and Canberra so it’s easiest to get there from one of those cities. If you are coming from further afield then you’ll want to fly into Sydney or Canberra first.

The Valley is fairly remote in that it’s located between the busier highlands and coast so it’s a bit off the train routes. This means that there is no good public transport option for getting to Kangaroo Valley. It’s theoretically possible to train and then catch local buses but services are infrequent and slow.

If you need to get to Kangaroo Valley without a car the best option is to book a day tour (recommendations below). They’re very fast-paced and can be a long day but it’s value for money and someone else does all the driving.

Getting to Kangaroo Valley from Sydney

The drive from Sydney to Kangaroo Valley is approximately 150km and takes around 2.5 hours. Once you get out of the city it’s a very scenic drive with coastal or green farmland views depending on which route you take.

You can choose to go via the Southern Highlands (make sure to stop at some of the awesome cafes in the area or even a fine dining restaurant for lunch) or via Wollongong and the South Coast (stopping at Kiama and Berry).

Getting to Kangaroo Valley from Canberra

Canberra is slightly further from Kangaroo Valley than Sydney, at 200km, but because of traffic it can be a shorter drive at around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

This drive goes via Lake George and Moss Vale. In terms of places to stop, Goulburn is a great option near halfway with good cafes and some cool street art.

Best Kangaroo Valley Day Tours

If you are staying 1 or more nights in Kangaroo Valley then definitely book the Kangaroo Valley Canoes, Cool Climate Wines and Canapés Tour .

You need to meet by the Kangaroo River so it’s not suitable for anyone wanting transport to the valley or to see the place in one day but for anyone with a bit more time, this is the ultimate combined kayaking and foodie experience.

For a one-day Kangaroo Valley tour with return transport to Sydney, the Walking with Wombats and Waterfalls Day Tour from Sydney has a great jam-packed wildlife-focused itinerary.

Another alternative is the South Coast Wildlife, Waterfalls and Wine Tasting Tour from Sydney which doesn’t spend as much time in Kangaroo Valley but gives you a taster of the whole South Coast area.

Where to stay in Kangaroo Valley

Accommodation in the area can also be limited so it’s best to book ahead to get the best deals.

I recommend one of the cabins on the Kangaroo Valley Golf Course  which are self-contained and private, otherwise there is a range of bed and breakfast type places closer to the village.

Frequently asked questions about Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley, like most of Australia, gets very hot in summer so plan your visit for the cooler months or shoulder season to make the most of the outdoor activities. March-April and October-November are great times to visit. Around Easter is ideal as all the businesses are still open from summer (there are some mid-winter closures or shorter opening hours) but it’s not as hot. But make sure to book well ahead if you are travelling on a public holiday weekend as the valley is popular!

The perfect amount of time to spend in Kangaroo Valley is a long weekend, staying 2 nights and having 2-3 days to explore. If you are driving from Sydney this gives you enough time to stop briefly at some of the other attractions on the way like the Kiama blowhole and the beautiful little town of Berry with the famous Berry Donut Van. It is possible to see Kangaroo Valley in one day but you’ll spend a lot of time travelling compared to actually seeing the valley and won’t have time for longer activities like kayaking.

Absolutely! There are lots of kangaroos in Kangaroo Valley and it’s common to see them hopping along the side of the road or across fields. We spotted at least 5 kangaroos in one weekend.

Kangaroo Valley is 120km and around 2 hours from central Sydney.

The South Coast of Sydney is home to some of Sydney’s best-kept secrets. Unfortunately, the South Coast of Sydney is not very popular because people have less knowledge about it. However, this place is not unknown to the Sydneysiders but is pretty much hidden from outside visitors who do not delve deep. That being said, here, you can enjoy some of the best of Sydney’s natural wonders along with discovering pristine beaches, local wineries, bush walks, and so on.

Can I take a photo with Koala on this tour?

Yes, you can visit the  Symbio Wildlife Park  on this tour, where you can  pat a koala and take a selfie with them.

Where is Kangaroo Valley?

Kangaroo Valley is a river valley located in the  Shoalhaven  region of  New South Wales ,  Australia . This valley can be easily accessed from Sydney and Canberra by a two-hour drive.

Where is Grand Pacific drive?

Grand Pacific Drive is a tourist attraction in the Australian town of Stanwell Tops. It is a 140-kilometre picturesque coastal road that begins at the Royal National Park, passes through Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, and the Shoalhaven, and ends at the Royal National Park .
