Kwik Trip details expansion plans for 2023

The retailer aims to open 31 new convenience stores across six states by the end of the year after recently eyeing its first locations in Michigan and South Dakota.

After Kwik Trip has recently outlined plans to expand into South Dakota and Michigan, it has now laid out plans for a wider expansion during 2023. The retailer aims to open a total of 31 new convenience stores across six states by the end of the year.

The news comes via a report by local news site c-storedive.com, in which a spokesperson of the company revealed details of the growth strategy. Kwik’s representative specified that most of this year’s new sites will begin construction this month, taking approximately four months to open its doors.

The company plans to open 10 new Kwik Trip locations in Minnesota, followed by eight in Wisconsin, six in South Dakota, four in Iowa, two in Michigan and one in Illinois. The first batch of these shops are expected to open in August, as construction is set to begin shortly.

Kwik Trip is one of the largest operators of convenience stores in the United States, operating a network of approximately 800 stores across the country. The brand currently has presence in Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin as well as in Illinois and Iowa under the name Kwik Star.

Kwik Trip is investing more than $151 million to expand operations at several Wisconsin locations, a move that will create more than 500 jobs by 2027, according to the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. (WEDC).

This newly proposed capital investment is for further expanding its dairy, commissary and bakery facilities in La Crosse, buying and renovating a commercial office building in Onalaska, and building a new satellite distribution center.

The expansion also will qualify La Crosse-based Kwik Trip to earn $15 million more in performance-based enterprise zone tax incentives from the Madison-based WEDC.

“Kwik Trip is one of Wisconsin’s most instantly recognizable success stories,” said Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “While most of us are familiar with Kwik Trip for its retail operations, the company continues to grow its manufacturing and supply chain base in our state, which is creating hundreds of jobs and new investments even faster than anyone could have anticipated.”

  • Kwik Trip is  No. 11  on  CSP’s  2023 Top 202  ranking of convenience store chains by store count.

This is the third time Wisconsin has invested in Kwik Trip’s growth in the state, raising the convenience-store chain’s eligibility for tax credits to a total of $41 million, the WEDC said. The state and Kwik Trip , which has 506 stores in Wisconsin, entered into the enterprise zone agreement in 2017, and since then the company has invested more than $325 million into its Wisconsin support center operations, created nearly 1,800 new eligible full-time jobs and grown and fostered mutually beneficial relationships with numerous Wisconsin supply chain partners.

“As a result of the growth at its La Crosse support center and the construction and acquisition of 168 new retail locations, Kwik Trip’s total eligible Wisconsin employee count has increased from 4,342 in 2017 to 12,442 in 2023, a total increase of 8,100 workers,” WEDC said.

Kwik Trip thus far has spent more than $325 million in capital investment and created 1,793 new jobs eligible to earn tax credits at their non-retail locations—well above what was anticipated at this point in the project, the WEDC said. Because Kwik Trip is exceeding the goals of its enterprise zone, the WEDC board voted in November to amend Kwik Trip’s contract to make it eligible for the aforementioned $15 million in tax credits. The actual amount of credits to be awarded will depend on the number of jobs created and amount of capital invested.

“Growth is good, not only for Kwik Trip, but most importantly for our coworkers and the communities we serve,” said Scott Zietlow, Kwik Trip CEO and president. “As a (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel named) Top Workplace, we are able to provide strong, vibrant jobs throughout Wisconsin. We appreciate the support from the WEDC to make this happen.”

Kwik Trip is a family-owned company that serves customers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and South Dakota with 865 convenience stores.

Kwik Trip exec hints at future growth cities, shares tips for running family-owned business at BizTimes Family & Closely Held Business Summit

Brandon Anderegg

Before 2002, not much differentiated Kwik Trip from traditional “cokes and smokes” convenience stores throughout the country. But it was that year that Kwik Trip began its separation from the pack of competitors as it adopted and implemented several new growth and brand strategies.

The La Crosse-based convenience store chain had just rolled out its hot food bar, but to ensure customers chose Kwik Trip over other brands, it placed a major emphasis on a characteristic that convenience stores aren’t historically known for – cleanliness, Kwik Trip training manager Carl Rick said Tuesday at BizTimes’ annual Family & Closely Held Business Summit .

In fact, Kwik Trip staked its future on both cleanliness in bathrooms and at its fuel lines, said Rick, a third-generation member of the Zietlow family, which became Kwik Trip’s sole owner in 2000.

“If people are going to eat in a convenience store, which has been the butt of a joke for as long as convenience stores have been around, we have to be clean. There’s just no two ways about it,” Rick said.

Kwik Trip bathrooms have an 800 number to call if bathrooms aren’t to a guest’s standards. When a visitor submits a complaint, they’ll receive a call from Kwik Trip president and CEO Don Zietlow, Rick said.

“Two weeks ago, we had nearly 10 million guests visit our stores over the course of the week. We had eight bathroom complaints and (Don) called them all back on Friday morning,” Rick said.

Since Kwik Trip opened its first location in Eau Claire in 1965, the company has grown to more than 770 stores mostly across Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, making it the 13th largest chain convenience store in the country.

Now Kwik Trip plans to open 40 new stores and remodel another 10 stores in 2021. Over the next five years, the company will build 40 to 50 new stores each year, which could grow to as many as 70 stores annually with remodeled locations, Rick said.

Because Kwik Trip delivers 80% of its own product daily, the company can cut costs and control the safety and quality of its food products. However, Rick says the fact that Kwik Trip delivers most of the products it sells also hinders where it can expand.

Despite this limitation, stationed drivers across Kwik Trip’s network have allowed the company to use a spoke and hub approach to reach new geographies, Rick said, adding that North and South Dakota, as well as the Upper Peninsula, are where the company plans to expand next.

“We know we can get out a lot further than we are right now, but we still have a lot of infill to do where we’re at,” Rick said. “We’re not in Racine, Milwaukee proper, or Minneapolis and St. Paul proper.”

Employee loyalty is at the forefront of Kwik Trip’s growth strategy, and it starts with calling team members co-workers rather than employees and treating them as members of the family, Rick said.

Kwik Trip currently has 30,000 co-workers whose benefits include a 40% profit sharing program – the program has provided staff with nearly a billion in shared revenue since it was launched in 1989, Rick said.

The idea behind the program is that if Kwik Trip works for its co-workers, rather than the other way around, the company will retain staff in turn create a better experience for the customer, he added.

“That accomplishes a couple of things,” Rick said. “Our co-workers are our most important asset. They’re not just our greatest expense in labor, but they’re our biggest expense in profit.”

The Family & Closely Held Business Summit was the first in-person BizTimes Media has held in more then 15 months. Photos from the program and networking cocktail hour are available here.

Kwik Trip Is About To Open More Stores In Iowa, Illinois, And Wisconsin

Midwesterners are about to have more options when it comes to stopping at Kwik Trips.

Kwik Trip (or Kwik Star, depending on where you live) announced that it has plans to open 31 new stores across Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, and South Dakota.

According to C-Store Dive , most of them will be in Minnesota, but there will be 8 new ones in Wisconsin, 4 in Iowa, and just 1 in Illinois. Most of the new Kwik Trips will start on construction this month.

Where Will They Be?

Kwik Trip said that the new Minnesota stores will be in Luverne, Lino Lakes, Elko New Market, Worthington, Redwood Falls, East Bethel, Melrose, Kasson, Cambridge and Marshall. They're in the western part of the state and so Kwik Trip says "it's a natural progression" to move into Sioux Falls, South Dakota too.

If you're road-tripping to Michigan, the new Kwik Trips will be in the Upper Peninsula in the state.

There's one thing that Kwik Trip didn't release though. They didn't specify where the new locations would be in Wisconsin, Illinois, or Iowa . We'll keep you updated when they do though.

A possible opening date for the new Kwik Trips hasn't been released yet but all of the new stores are expected to be open by the end of this year, according to Kwik Trip. Kwik Trip is based in La Crosse, Wisconsin and has over 800 locations in it's network. I can never remember where it's called Kwik Trip versus Kwik Star but it's the same company.

Kwik Trip Continues Growth in Minnesota with Plans to Open 11 New Stores

I often wondered why Kwik Trips are only in Wisconsin , Minnesota , and Iowa . (Yes, I know they're called Kwik Stars in Iowa, but it's the same store.)

I travel all around the Midwest and would love to get glazers and gas in other states, and I'm not alone, people love Kwik Trip. The convenience chain was named the  best gas station in America by USA Today in 2022 . So why can't you find Kwik Trips in other states? I asked a Kwik Trip representative during a tour of their La Crosse facility and the answer I got is the reason people love the company.

kwik trip future locations 2023

I was told proximity is one of the most important factors that Kwik Trip considers when expanding. The company is serious about taking care of customers and wants to make sure the products they sell are as fresh as possible. Each new store has to be close enough to receive daily shipments from Kwik Trip’s headquarters in La Crosse.

By the way, Kwik Trip’s campus in La Crosse is massive. It's home to one of the largest bakeries in the entire world. They make all of their bread, donuts, and cookies there. They also bottle their milk - with a promise to have it delivered from cow to stores in 24-48 hours - and they make their ice cream in La Crosse too.

It's an impressive operation and their dedication to quality is one of the reasons why the convenience chain was recently recognized as the best in America.

Kwik Trip Plans To Open 11 New Stores In Minnesota

Shania from Kwik Trip recently told us about the new stores being built in Minnesota and the new feature that each one will have.

Last year, Kwik Trip's big addition was BitCoin machines in each of its stores. This year, it's a self-check-out option. Shania said the company plans to add this feature to all stores that were built in 2022 and every new one going forward.

Where Will The New Kwik Trips Be Located in Minnesota?

Kwik Trip will continue expanding throughout Minnesota with 11 new stores planned for 2023. They will open in these towns:

Centerville

Elko New Market

Worthington

Redwood Falls

East Bethel

Moscow Metro map 2030

We designed a brand-new map of the Moscow Metro. It shows what the transport system will be like in ten years.

New design of the map

The map has changed as the transit system has evolved.

Starting in the 2010s the construction of new metro stations outside the city center became extensive. Reconstructed railway lines became a part of the metro system. The increasing complexity of the network called for the search of new ways to make a map, since the current version no longer reflected the geography of the city.

The history of the metro map

Map 1

When there were not so many lines, the Metro map was drawn geographically and even showed the bends of the tunnels. Such an approach made it easy to highlight the connection between the new transport service and the city.

Source: n-metro.ru (Our Metro Collectors Society)

Moscow metro map, 1978

New terminal stations were added to the system and they were expanding further and further away from the center. The lines were not bended anymore. As a result, the map became less geographically accurate.

Moscow metro map, 1981

The metro was getting closer to the Moscow Ring Road, and long lists of stations began to form at the end of the lines. Lines were drawn vertically to make lists more compact.

Source: transphoto.org (City Electrotransport)

Moscow metro map, 1985

Designers made an attempt to make the map more geographically accurate, however, this map looked "broken" and was used for a short period of time.

Moscow metro map, 1987

To organize the graphics all lines were drawn in a 45° grid. Doing so helped to create a more harmonious composition with parallel sections of lines.

Moscow metro map, 1995

Looking for a balance between empty and packed spaces of the map, the designers made a new layout of it. It now filled the whole space of the sheet.

Moscow metro map, 2013

In 2013 Moscovites voted for a new metro map and chose the one made by the Art. Lebedev Studio. This was the biggest metro map update at the time. New design solutions used in this version were further developed in the transport design of Moscow.

Moscow metro map, 2021

With the opening of the MCC and the MCD, the map again lost its visual balance. As a result of showing the MCC ring and the Circle line as circles, empty and packed spaces started to reappear.

Moscow geography

The metro map 2030 shows the Moscow transportation system geographically.

Lines go beyond the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) up to the cities near Moscow. The Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) becomes an important element of the map as it is the border of the main part of Moscow. Its contour helps to find your way on the map and plan the time of a trip.

Geography of the city

Lines which show the real geography look like a skein and are difficult to navigate through. We unwound all the complex intersections at the central part of the city and schematically showed the bending of lines outside of downtown. This approach helps one to understand a very complex transport system, allows for easier navigation, and makes it possible to juxtapose metro and city maps.

Shapes of the new map

Rings are not round. Why?

Rings have become a symbol of Moscow. Everything in Moscow obeys the logic of rings: Boulevard and Garden rings, Moscow Ring Road, and the Circle metro line.

A circular line is a closed line with transfers. Its shape doesn’t matter. For example, the circular line on the London Tube map is shaped like a bottle, and this shape is easy to memorize.

We looked for many solutions for new rings while creating this map.

When looking for a shape we wanted it to meet three requirements: visual equability (no empty or packed spaces), ease in finding your way and a recognizable shape of rings.

New 60° grid

The graphic grid is the invisible guides that form the composition.

In 1980s a 45° grid was used to design the official Moscow Metro map. This is the most popular technique in schematic map design in the world. In 1931 Harry Beck designed the first 45° grid for the London tube. Since then it has become the standard for transport map design.

For the new metro map, we have tried a completely new approach to the grid. Instead of the four 45° axes forming the schematic drawing, we only use three 60° axes. This grid allowed us to create elegant and eye-pleasing bends of lines.

Classic 45° grid

Round and square maps

Round map

Since 2015 the design of the Moscow city wayfinding system has been changing. All constructions on the streets and stations reserved for metro maps have become round. The round format is the main one for the map, though it easily adapts to rectangular formats used in train cars.

Highlighted transfers

The design of transfers between stations is one of the most important elements of a transport map.

First maps of the Moscow Metro used arrows to show transfers, explaining to passengers that they can get from one line to another.

The graphics are not that complicated now. Since 2013 transfers have been drawn as "dumbbells" — paired rings with gradient transitions between colours. This works well when there are few hubs.

The increasing complexity of the transport system requires a new solution for hubs. We have developed a design called "capsule". Outlines of transfers are rich in contrast and are easy to understand.

Anthracite metro ring

Turquoise Big Circle map

The colour choice for transport systems is a complicated process that can only be done taking into account the prospects of future development. A few years ago we did some research on the colour-coding of diameters and developed a set of colours that had not previously been used.

Simple names for the surface metro

New line signs

Metro map 2030 is our vision of the future city. By creating this map, we want to launch a discussion about future graphic solutions for the identity of Moscow.

The idea of the new Moscow Metro map came into picture after the successful completion of the Paris Metro map project. Many graphic solutions designed for Paris helped to create this map for Moscow.

This is not our first map. We specialize in transport design, maps, wayfinding systems, transport logos, and other graphic solutions.
