Golden Girl: The River Cruise Line’s mps Lady Anne

Lady-Anne

Stepping aboard the mps Lady Anne, the first thing that you notice is the relaxed atmosphere and the smiling faces of the crew, and you can tell straight away that this is going to be a great experience. The mps Lady Anne has been The River Cruise Line’s flagship since they began exploring the European waterways back in 2001, and it has been helping to create countless cherished holiday memories ever since.

The crew of the mps Lady Anne take great pride in their work, ensuring all of the ship’s passengers feel at home from the very first moment of their cruise. Captain Wido Arts has been both captain and owner of the Lady Anne for over 15 years, and for both him and his crew, their duties are so much more than just a job. Aside from upholding their excellent standards of customer service, the crew are eager to get to know you and share your passion for cruise and exploration. Their friendliness and dedication are two of the main reasons why the mps Lady Anne sees so many repeat guests each year.

mps-Lady-Anne-Crew

On a trip with The River Cruise Line aboard the mps Lady Anne you can expect to be well taken care of. After travelling to the ship, you will be welcomed by the captain and the crew with a drink and an invite to the traditional ‘Captain’s get-together’ party. During your trip, you don’t need to worry about your meals as full board is provided from the ship’s excellent kitchen, and you will never be at a loss for something to do, as an exciting onboard entertainment programme will keep you busy.

The mps Lady Anne is operated exclusively for The River Cruise Line’s customers, and with a maximum capacity of just 100 passengers, you are bound to see a friendly face. The lounge bar forms the social hub of the ship, offering panoramic views, comfortable sofas and a welcoming atmosphere. The bar staff are on hand to provide you with stellar table service, leaving you free to mingle with your friends (and let’s be honest, the crew of any ship are what REALLY make a cruise extra special). After dinner, you can take to the dance floor to the sound of some toe-tapping tunes, or head to the bar for a night-cap before retiring to your cabin.

Lady-Anne-Bar

Speaking of dinner, the ship’s recently refurbished restaurant is located on the Passenger Deck and offers top-quality food throughout the day, with excellent service from the dedicated waiting staff. You can start your day with a full breakfast buffet, including cereal, fruit, yoghurt, cold meats, and cheeses or opt for a traditional cooked breakfast instead. The restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes for lunch, whilst in the evening you can sit down to a four-course meal prepared by the ship’s talented chef.

If the weather is fine, you can head up to the Sun Deck and get a closer look at the spectacular river valleys and plains as the ship glides along on her journey. You can kick back and relax on one of the deck’s many sun loungers, or settle down for a chat with your friends on the comfortable wicker deck furniture. The Sun Deck is also a great location if you are looking to have a quiet moment under the stars before you head back inside for a drink.

Lady-Anne-Sun-Deck

Spending time on the deck is perfect for summer breaks, such as The River Cruise Line’s Rhine cruise , where you can embark on a spectacular journey through the countries of the Rhine, gliding past picturesque towns and rich vineyards along the way. If you are wine connoisseur or even just like a small tipple, a great day out is Neustadt an de Weinstrasse, considered by many to be the secret wine capital of the Rhine.

The mps Lady Anne has a variety of cabins available to suit all needs. All of the cabins onboard have outside views of the river, en-suite shower facilities and a secure safe. For those hot summer months, cabins are all equipped with air conditioning to ensure you are comfortable no matter how warm it gets outside. The cabins are located across all three levels of the ship. The Passenger Deck hosts a mixture of single, double and triple berths, with windows or portholes along the waterline, whilst the Main Deck is made up of two berth cabins consisting of both standard and superior class cabins. The best cabins on the ship are located on the Promenade Deck, providing two single beds and a large view window.

Whether you have spent the day relaxing on the ship as it cruises the Dutch waterways , or going ashore to explore beyond the traditional tulips and windmills of the Netherlands, you can be sure that whichever cabin you decide to stay in, you will end the day in comfort.

I may be embarking on my very first river cruise next year, which is why I am sharing this post with you today as I want to know what YOU think?

Your special offer

lady anne river cruises

By Cruise & Travel | 22 Sep 2010

The 106-berth mps Lady Anne is a floating “home from home”. The owner and Captain of the ship, Capt. Wido Arts has brought together an experienced and amiable crew whose paramount importance is the comfort of passengers.

There are three levels of cabins, from single berths down on the Passenger Deck to 2-berth cabins with panoramic windows on the Main and Promenade Decks.

All the cabins, from single berths to triple berths, have outside views, ample heating, a safe and private facilities with washbasin, shower and wc; two superior cabins on the Promenade Deck also offer a bath with shower attachment.

Delicious home-style fare is freshly prepared in the ship’s galley before being served in the attractive restaurant on the Passenger Deck. Breakfast is buffet style with a selection of hot and cold dishes to choose from. Lunch also adheres to a buffet style format whilst dinner is generally a four-course set menu. Don’t be deterred from booking an excursion for fear of missing your lunch; the mps Lady Anne galley will ensure you don’t go hungry by equipping you with an appetising packed lunch.

Early risers amongst are treated to free tea and coffee, whilst everyone is served complimentary mid-morning tea or coffee in the lounge.

On warm days, daytime cruising is largely spent on the ship’s sundeck with its ‘garden-style’ seating and open and covered areas. Even when the climate dictates that we remain tucked inside the spacious lounge bar however, the magnificent panoramic windows look out over the scnerey. This delightful lounge is where the on-board entertainment and get-togethers take place. With a dance floor, well-stocked bar and comfortable seating for everyone, it’s the ‘hub’ of the ship.

Just below on the Main Deck a small souvenir shop keeps us supplied with postcards, maps and a selection of everyday essentials.

Rhine cruise aboard the mps Lady Anne

Having just returned from a holiday on the Rhine courtesy of The River Cruise Line aboard the mps Lady Anne I feel I have to comment on the atttitude of the Cruise Director and Cruise Manager namely Maggie and Alex. They were not prepared to answer any queries put to them directly. Maggie especially had an arrogant attitude toward her customers and seemed to regard the boat as an old people's home making comments such as "If you disembark don't forget to take your teeth and your medication with you!" The commentary given by both of these individuals was either non existant or given 2 or 3 miles after we had passed any points of interest. Not once did Maggie mingle with the passengers but sat in crew corner every evening aloof from us all. She did become more active on The Captains Night but even then commented to myself that she thought the passengers were hard work. These two representatives of the company could have spoiled our holiday and I think The River Cruise Line need to re- train their reps to bring them up to a satisfactory standard. The crew of the mps Lady Anne were fantastic. Friendly helpful and hard working. A special mention for Veronica she was a credit to the Captain and his team. The Lady Anne was clean, food was good and plenty of it but the cabin space was abysmal in fact our cabin could be classed as a glorified cupboard. We would not recommend this company and will not be sailing with them again. Mr and Mrs Simpkins Co. Durham

For those looking for a lovely drive in their german holiday - I recommend renting a car and taking the drive along the Rhein, for those with only a day or two to spare, from Bingen is a nice day trip, with several Schloss or Castles along the way along with several wonderful little towns. If you have only a day, you will have to watch your time, but make sure to stop at a few of the castles or Burg's and have a wander. I recommend Burg Sooneck as well worth the time for a stop and also enjoy a snack or lunch on the river in St. Goar or Boppard.

The River Cruise Line should not be allowed to operate. The Lady Anne is very very old and a fire hazzard. food is horrid cabins a disgrace. yet again sickness on board medical care horrific. I guess it could be compared to a prison ship only that would be doing the prison ship a dis-service

We have just returned from a most well conducted river cruise by River Cruise Line on the vessel mps Lady Anne. A rather long coach journey across Belgium and into Germany where at Andernach we boarded the Lady Anne. A small compact cabin where, after a few minutes, our luggage was delivered. Then a good meal in the on board dining room and not long after to bed. Then six days cruising up the Moselle as far as Trier and back to Coblenz where after breakfast back on the coach to Calais and then to Dover. The Lady Anne, now of quite venerable vintage, sleeps a maximum of 100 passengers. The choice of main meals is limited but is likely to suit all reasonable tastes (you can eat at your own expense ashore), breakfast excellent, bar prices reasonable and the whole staff on our May cruise polite, friendly, helpful and pleasure to be with. Lounge and outdoor sitting area very comfortable: helped by warm, sunny weather. The holiday was most enjoyable, others were obviously enjoying it too and we can highly recommend River Cruise line and particularly if you choose the Moselle rather than the less attractive River Rhine cruises.

I went on the River Rhine Cruise last year, and it was wonderful. or some time, the idea of taking a river cruise had appealed to us and after browsing through a number of brochures, we eventually booked Viking River Cruises' Every day ‘Viking Daily’, listing our programme for the day, and a news sheet about UK and national news, were left in our cabin. Hence we knew exactly what we were supposed to do each day. The highlight of the luncheon picnic on deck while cruising through the scenic part of the Rhine with a castle on every hilltop! Would go back next year for sure! http://www.cruise.co.uk/river-cruises/viking-river-cruises/

This was our first Viking River Cruise. We've taken several BIG ship cruises and we were not prepared for the fantastic differences we found. Fist, the ship (the TOR) was brand spanking new. It was uncrated only 18 hours prior to receiving guests. We were met at the ship by the Program Director, Concierge, and other officers. With only 190 passengers - not thousands as on the big ships - the service was five star. Every staff member seemed to want us to have the best cruise experience ever - and we did! The food was excellent and plentiful. The included excursions first rate, and the optional excursions very inexpensive and just as good as those included. The staterooms had plenty of storage and a large flat screen TV. For those accustomed to the herds of passengers on the Big Boats, you should find the smaller cruise much better for making new acquaintances. We met lots of couples with varied interests and occupations (as well as retired folks like us). As my wife put it: "We made about 180 new friends on this trip". If you are looking for something special, I can highly recommend Viking River Cruises and their excellent staff. We are already planning for our next Viking cruise.

MPS Lady Anne

Described as a floating "home from home", owner and Captain of the mps

Lady Anne, Wido Arts, has brought together an experienced and amiable crew whose priority is your comfort and enjoyment. Indeed, it is greatly due to the warm and relaxed atmosphere on board that our passengers return year after year, even several times in the same year!

Wido Arts has been the owner as well as the captain of the mps Lady Anne for over 12 years. For him and his crew, their duties are so much more than a job – it’s their passion and together they go out of their way to make you feel at home from the moment you step aboard. That’s why repeat bookings are so high for this delightful little ship.

With a maximum capacity of 100 passengers, it doesn’t take long for everyone to get to know each other on board the mps Lady Anne – and that includes Captain Wido and his crew! So much so that by the time you come to leave, you will no doubt be exchanging addresses and telephone numbers to keep in touch with newfound friends.

CABIN ACCOMMODATION

All cabins, from single berths to triple berths, have outside views, heating, a safe and private facilities with washbasin, shower and toilet; two superior cabins on the Promenade Deck also offer a bath with shower attachment. Please note: the ordinary stairs are quite steep and those to the Passenger Deck are particularly steep, therefore the cabins on the Passenger Deck are not suitable for people with any sort of difficulties with stairs. Please also note that 3 berth cabins are 2 lower bunks and 1 upper bunk.

Enjoy the passing scenery from this open area, where you can relax on garden-style seating and sun loungers whilst the ship's crew wait on you. There is also a small souvenir shop on the Main Deck which keeps you supplied with postcards, maps and a selection of souvenirs. Stair lifts lead from the Sun Deck to the Promenade Deck, Promenade Deck to the Main Deck and the Main Deck to the restaurant area of the Passenger Deck (the stair lift does not give access to the Passenger Deck cabins).

Delicious meals are freshly prepared on board and served in the cosy restaurant. Breakfast is a hot and cold buffet, lunch is also a buffet and dinner is generally a set four course menu. Please note: vegetarian options and dietary requirements can be catered for on request.

This is the social hub of the ship, with comfortable seating and panoramic windows to enjoy the views in the day and a dance floor and well stocked bar for the evening - the perfect ingredients for the Captains Party Night!

Trips on Lady Anne

Join us aboard Lady Anne to see a side of Uist only accessible by sea. Let us guide you around rugged cliffs, unpopulated shores, hidden bays, and once populated inlets, now home only to the wildest of Uist’s residents on one of our two wildlife cruises.  Whether your goal is to capture some breathtaking photography, check rare sea birds off your bucket list, or simply to see a side of Uist only imaginable from land, Lady Anne Wildlife Cruises will take you on a journey around some of the most magnificent and beautiful parts of our islands in safety and comfort.

Uists beautiful coastline taken from Lady Anne boat trips

Lying just off the east coast of Grimsay the uninhabited isle of Ronay offers a fascinating glimpse into the geological and social history of the Outer Hebrides, with its abandoned settlements and Lewisian gneiss landscape.

In the early part of the 19th century as many as 160 people lived on Ronay, but many were moved off the land to make way for sheep, and within a generation only one shepherd’s house remained. Finally abandoned in the 1960s, the island is now uninhabited, leaving the varied wildlife of Uist’s coasts to make their home among the archaeological sites that provide a fascinating insight into the way of life that was once common throughout the islands.

A trip on Lady Anne is the perfect way to see these sites from the water, learning some of Ronay’s history from our tour guides against a backdrop of stunning scenery and spectacular geology, and with the interruptions of the occasional otter, stag, seal or eagle!

Map of Ronay for boat trip

The Ford, Rossinish and Minish

The North Ford has always been the highway for fishermen heading out towards the Monach Isles in search of lobster, and on Lady Anne we can explore the western approaches, much loved by the common seal.

Skirting Benbecula, we pass the historic area of Rossinish, from where Bonnie Prince Charlie set out on his epic voyage to Skye with Flora Macdonald in 1746, before heading farther south and entering the beautiful and atmospheric inlets on Benbecula’s remote and uninhabited east coast which are a haven for eagles and otters.

Our Two Hour Trips

All of our trips depart from Kallin Harbour in Grimsay, North Uist. The route we take on any given day depends upon several factors, informed by the recent sightings we’ve made and the weather on the day.

Our first sightseeing and wildlife-watching route circles the island of Ronay and explores some of the many hidden bays at the foot of Eaval, North Uist’s highest hill. This takes us past a pair of resident sea eagles who have lived in the area for almost ten years and who, used to our presence in their waters, allow us to watch them most days, often within meters of the boat.

On other days we will head south, exploring the isolated bays on the east side of Benbecula, a maze of once populated islets and waterways where otters and eagles are undisturbed by man.

These two different routes allow us to take Lady Anne out in a variety of weather conditions, almost always finding a way to enjoy the scenery and wildlife, whatever the wind direction.

Landscape 01.jpg

What do we see ?

A vast variety of species thrive in Uist’s coastal environments, and our trips are led by guides who know these waters almost as well as the wildlife that makes these shores its home.

From common seals basking on the rocks, to rare black throated divers resting and refuelling after their long migration, our trips will give you a chance to see some of these wonderful animals in their natural habitats.

For bird of prey enthusiasts, white tailed and golden eagles nest along the cliffs of Ronay and peregrine falcons and hen harriers can be spotted flying over the hillsides where herds of wild red deer graze among the heather and bracken.

Elusive Eurasian sea otters can be spotted hunting for crabs along the shorelines and playing in the strong currents between islands, which also provide fertile hunting grounds for hungry gannets and opportunities to witness their characteristic speedy dives into the water.

The waters around these islands also provide an excellent summer habitat for cetaceans, with the Hebrides’ many species dolphins, porpoises and whales spotted with varying degrees of frequency on our trips out to a side of Uist rarely seen.

On the most special of occasions basking sharks, humpback whales and even orca have been seen from the decks of Lady Anne.

Orca in the Minch photographed on a boat trip on Lady Anne Wildlife Cruises

Lady Anne is the perfect vessel for a wildlife cruise around Uist’s rugged east coast.  Our spacious open deck provides excellent views of the sea and sky with seating on the central engine box and high safety rails all the way around, making Lady Anne suitable for passengers of all ages.  A covered cabin provides shelter from inclement weather, and conversation with the captain, as well as seating and an array of books and binoculars to assist with your wildlife spotting.  Our trips are slow and steady, providing time for to really take in the spectacular sights on our tours, and to capture photographs in an unhurried and unpressured environment.

In 2023 Lady Anne Boat Trips became Lady Anne Wildlife Cruises.

We love cruise video

12 travel journalists unite on video to say what they love about cruises

Exploring the ms arena as it glides the rivers of europe for the first time.

Harry Rogers

We climbed aboard the MS Arena to experience what it offers groups on a special preview river cruise from Arnhem to Amsterdam. Read our thoughts and watch the video highlights.

It’s been more than two years since Arena Travel officially announced the MS Arena was ready to take passengers along some of the most beautiful routes on Europe’s waterways. But, like the rest of the world, the pandemic halted its maiden season and we have had to wait a little longer to climb onboard and enjoy its hospitality, comfort… and views.

I think it’s fair to say that the delay only heightened expectations and I had the pleasure of joining travel trade suppliers and a number of group travel organisers for the official preview sailing which can only be described as one big celebration.

Full of character, the atmospheric MS Arena is the second and newest river ship from Arena Travel, which also operates the  MPS   Calypso which has replaced the retired MPS Lady Anne which once held the title of the oldest river cruise ship in Europe.

The MS Arena  certainly doesn’t feel old with its bright and welcoming interior, demonstrated in the lounge bar with its panoramic views, a fine restaurant backed by an impeccable crew, and an abundance of cabins to suit a variety of budgets.

“I actually can’t believe I’m here,” said Arena chairman Declan Treanor in a heartfelt welcome speech, visibly delighted that the vessel is being used as intended after more than 700 days in an isolated shipyard. “The last time I saw this ship was in 2018 so it’s lovely to be stood here today and to see it looking so smart.”

MS Arena exterior

The four-star MS Arena transported guests for the first time from Arnhem to Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

Stylish cabins with big views

MS Arena can hold up to 192 guests, based on each room accommodating two people, although Arena anticipates that occupancy will be around the 120 mark on most voyages. Cabins on board are spacious with all featuring French balconies and flat screen TVs, along with free WiFi. Regardless of the grade chosen all guests will enjoy large, floor to ceiling windows with unspoilt views, with Main Deck Superior and Upper Deck Superior cabins also equipped with comfortable hotel-style beds. Main Deck cabins have one fixed and one folding bed for extra space during the day.

The ship ambles along at about 10-12 km an hour, hitting double that with the flow of the river but speed is the least of concerns on a river cruise. “It’s so relaxing and everything is done for you. You have a lovely meal at night, a great breakfast in the morning and can sit back and enjoy the views,” said Kay Beaumont, group organiser for Kay’s Days Out, and one of a handful of GTOs on board for the first sailing. I couldn’t agree more.

Passanger cabin aboard the MS Arena

All cabins aboard the ship, no matter the price you pay, come with large, floor to ceiling windows.

The reception area is manned 24 hours a day and can be called from any cabin and the lounge hosts live entertainment in the evening, whether it be musicians, singers or a quiz to take part in. There is a large sun deck, a library with bottomless hot drinks and board games waiting to be used, plus a wellness and fitness suite to burn off the calories that are inevitable when the food is this tempting. Like all good cruises, there is a lot of it but that’s what holidays are for, after all.

What some of the group organisers on board thought of the new MS Arena:

  • Mary Gotts, Gott 2 Travel: “It’s just fantastic, it’s really bright with lovely big windows. In the restaurant you can sit down and eat your food while looking out at the world around you. In the cabin, the floor to ceiling windows makes the space feel even bigger.”
  • Maureen Tidbury, M&G Holidays: “It’s very bright everywhere. There’s a lovely big window in the cabin which is a huge bonus compared some other ships I’ve been on – I think it’s exceptional.”
  • Elizabeth Hodgson, Barnet U3A: “It’s a unique experience and a lovely way to travel. I’ve been very impressed with the ship and look forward to bringing my group on board next year.”

Elizabeth Hodgson, Barnet U3A

Elizabeth Hodgson was on board the cruise with the March edition of the magazine, wearing her homemade GTO of the Year® t-shirt. Elizabeth won the prize at the 2021 Group Leisure & Travel Awards.

The Panorama Restaurant on the main deck serves up a variety of delicious treats, from traditional local delicacies to international favourites. It’s manned by an outstanding team, who may have been masked up due to the times we live in, but were equipped with fun badges showing the smile behind the face covering. Just that little extra touch was enough to make them even more approachable.

A small area towards the back of the space can also be commandeered by groups who want an area for activities or a private social gathering. The best part of the space? A convenient spiral staircase at the bow of the ship which links both the restaurant and lounge.

Guests are given an itinerary for the day detailing what time they can visit the restaurant and the food that will be cooked for them. In my case I was treated to delicious buffets, serving a variety of dishes such as chicken pie, spaghetti carbonara and fresh salads. Passengers are also given a table number in which to sit for the duration of the cruise to help with the flow of service.

The restaurant has a dedicated space for groups to use for activities or a private social gathering.

A Premium Package that offers more

One of the additional perks of travelling with Arena is the on-board Premium Package, where for an additional charge, passengers can enjoy free use of the Wellness & Fitness Suite, a welcome basket of fruit, drinks with meals, daily water delivered to the cabin, a selection of complimentary toiletries, plus 10% savings on excursions.

Of course, groups can also charter the whole ship, which is something that Elizabeth Hodgson, organiser for Barnet U3A and last year’s Group Travel Organiser of the Year Award winner, plans to do in September 2023. Elizabeth was part of the preview sailing to familiarise herself with the ship to ensure her group gets the most out of future sailings.

“It’s certainly an advantage to come along on trips like this to get to know the layout before we bring the group along.” she told me while enjoying a cup of tea in the library area on board. “I sat down with a member of Arena’s team to talk to them, not just about the ship, but the fact they’re prepared to be available whenever needed.

“This is the kind of thing as an organiser that fills you with huge confidence. I can now go back and report to my members that we’ve been, assessed everything, got a feel for the company and I know that I’ll be looked after.”

Lounge bar aboard the MS Arena

The stylish lounge hosts live entertainment every night.

It’s this service that keeps groups coming back again and again according to Kay Beaumont, who added: “Arena Travel really looks after you, you can ask the team anything you want and they will get back to you as soon as possible. I can phone or email and I know I will always get a reliable answer, no matter what time of day it is.”

Help with group bookings

All group bookings go through Janet Fielding, groups manager for Arena Travel, who can help produce tailor-made tours and bespoke marketing material that GTOs can pass on to their members. Janet told me: “From the initial phone call to when the group comes home, I am the focal point for the whole trip to make sure everything is perfect for our bookers.”

“We’re beginning to see more demand but I think the majority of who we deal with, due to the age bracket, were a little bit reluctant to travel so soon, especially with the added pressures of sorting out Covid tests and other paper work.

Janet added: “The market is opening up now with things becoming slightly easier. It has been slow but we’re confident we’ll start seeing further group bookings.”

Our whistlestop tour concluded on the banks of Amsterdam, overlooking the A’DAM Lookout Tower – home to Europe’s tallest swing. The ship has now begun welcoming customers and has an array of itineraries this year and into the future. The premier ship is offering cruises on the Dutch Waterways, as well as the Rhine, Danube and Moselle, covering some of the most beautiful areas across the continent.

Upcoming highlights which groups may be interested in include the  Journey along the Danube to the Rhine cruise in October, visiting the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Cologne across 14 days, plus the  Rhine and Moselle Christmas Celebration cruise , running across eight days in December and exploring some of the best Christmas markets that Germany has to offer.
