11 Best Things to Do at Lake Winnipesaukee In New Hampshire | A Vacation for the Whole Family

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

For the past 20 years, my summer just isn’t summer without a family vacation at Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s largest lake, which stretches 72 square miles across the center of the state. My family and I visit the area annually, thanks to my mother, who spends the warm-weather months in a lakefront house there.

My kids grew up swimming in clear, spring-fed water; boating along wooded shores to explore narrow inlets and quiet bays; sampling ice cream at (multiple) favorite local stands; riding bumper cars and eating fried dough at a touristy boardwalk; and listening for loons as the sun set behind the hilly landscape, casting a pink glow on a still lake. I also took them to visit the New Hampshire Boat Museum and saw their little jaws dropping at the exhibits.

If it sounds idyllic, it really is. Especially if you’re a family of doers like mine is, since there’s so much to do on the water — and in the mountains near Lake Winnipesaukee– in the summer months. Annually, we fill our week’s vacation with tons of activity close to the waterfront towns of Laconia, Meredith, and Gilford, where our home base has always been. However, vacationers also flock to Alton in the south, Wolfeboro (“America’s Oldest Summer Resort”) to the east, and Moltonborough to the north.

My suggestions below focus on things to see and do — with and without kids — on the west side of Lake Winnipesaukee , since I know it best. But I’ve got a couple of suggestions at the end of this article in case you’re staying in one of the other scenic areas of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire (or you’re in the mood to explore).

11 Best Things to Do at Lake Winnipesaukee

1. take a cruise on the m/s mount washington.

In the Lakes Region, a scenic cruise on Lake Winnipesaukee is a fabulous way to get an overview of just how big, and how beautiful, the tree-lined, island-dotted lake really is.

Narrated daily cruises and evening dinner cruises aboard the majestic, 230-foot M/S Mount Washington depart from a dock at Weirs Beach and each lasts about 2.5 hours. This vessel is big! It holds 1,250 passengers with interior and exterior seating. Shorter tours aboard the smaller M/V Sophie C. , a working mailboat that delivers mail to island residents, and M/V Doris E . are also available.

Tubing on the lake.

2. Rent Your Own Boat — Or Party Pontoon

If you prefer to do the driving yourself on Lake Winnipesaukee, consider renting a motorboat for fishing, tubing, or simply touring around for as little as half a day or up to a week or more. Many Lake Winnipesaukee boat rental shops also offer personal watercrafts (jet skis), as well as canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, water skis, wakeboards, and inflatable tubes for loads of fun on the water.

My family tends to rent stable pontoon boats that are powerful enough to cut through the water and pull kids (and adventurous adults!) on tubes but also big enough for family and friends to spread out and enjoy cocktail cruises at sunset. For a more tranquil boat experience, we sometimes visit the New Hampshire Boat Museum.

Pro Tip: If you plan on renting a motorboat or jet ski that’s over 25 horsepower in the Lakes Region, you’ll need a NH Safe Boating Certificate.

3. Ride The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad

For a different view of the lake, and the mountains that surround it on three sides, consider a 1- or 2-hour train ride on the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad. Departing from Weirs Beach or Meredith, Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad trips offer some good old-fashioned fun on a rail system that dates back to the 1800s, when locomotives would make their way through New Hampshire from Boston to Montreal.

4. Hit The Boardwalk And Arcade At Weirs Beach

The spacious, sandy area at Weirs Beach is a wildly popular spot for day trippers, so be prepared for crowds if you dip in this lakefront area to spend a few hours at its bustling boardwalk with The Half Moon Family Fun Center and Penny Arcade.

This is the place to try your hand at skeeball, pinball, video games, and classic arcade games. Many of the games spit out tickets that you can turn in for prizes at the end of the day (or vacation — my kids would always hoard them to get something “big” before it was time to return home to Colorado ).

At Weirs Beach you can also ride bumper cars and treat yourself to some homemade fudge, saltwater taffy, or fried dough smothered in melted butter and powdered sugar. This area is home to a retro drive-in movie theater, too!

Pro Tip: If you want even more arcade fun, consider Laconia’s Funspot, which claims to be the largest arcade in the world! It’s got an especially cool array of classic video games to play — think Donkey Kong and Asteroids — as well as a 20-lane bowling alley and 18-hole mini-golf course. Be aware, though, this all-indoor location is ridiculously crowded on a rainy summer day.

Town Docks Restaurant off the lake.

5. Find Your Favorite Ice Cream Stand

I say the only way to figure out which spot at Lake Winnipesaukee has the best ice cream is to try them all! I’m partial to the plethora of fresh flavors at Town Docks, where you can order your cup or cone at the window, then perch at a picnic bench with your feet in the sand, watching the boats come and go at the public docks in Meredith.

My kids might argue that the ice cream sundae bar (the Smorgasbord) at Kellerhaus, not far from Weirs Beach, is their favorite. Then there’s Sawyer’s Dairy Bar in Gilford, which also turns out some darn good lobster rolls and hand-cut onion rings.

Pro Tip: If you want a milkshake in New England, you’ll probably be ordering a frappe (pronounced “frap”) off the menu. If you see both a milkshake and a frappe offered, the frappe is the thick one with ice cream in it, while a milkshake is just milk and flavored syrup.

Ziplining in Lake Winnipesaukee.

6. Fly Through The Air At Gunstock

Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford caters to skiers and snowboarders in the winter, but in the warm-weather months it becomes quite the adventure playground — for all ages. On my family’s most recent trip to Lake Winnipesaukee, my husband and I took our teens on the zipline tour, and I’m not sure who found it most thrilling — the 50-somethings or the young adults!

One stretch of the ZipTour Zipline features an incredible 1.6 miles of soaring through the air, and the mountain views are phenomenal. They say you can reach up to 70 miles an hour on this zipline, and while I’m certain I didn’t (since you can control the speed yourself), I’d still call it quite exciting.

Other outdoor, adventurous fun you can have at Gunstock in the summer includes an e-bike tour, an off-road Segway tour, and a Mountain Coaster ride. If you just want to kick back and relax while appreciating the pretty landscapes, consider a scenic chair-lift ride.

Editor’s Note: If you’re interested in zip-lining at Lake Winnipesaukee or elsewhere, consider these 8 Things To Know Before You Zip-Line For The First Time .

A lookout point on Mount Major.

7. Hike Mount Major

I’ll be honest: I liked this hike better when I was about 10 years younger and my joints weren’t so creaky! While most trail guides label this hike as moderate, and it starts out wooded and fairly mellow, it can include a bit of steep rock scrambling if you choose the direct blue route over the lengthier loop routes. However, the views at the top of Lake Winnipesaukee are definitely worth it if you’ve got the energy and stamina!

Pro Tip: The trailhead parking lot just off Route 11 in Alton can be crowded, especially on weekends. Try to do the hike first thing in the morning to avoid crowds and the hot, humid temperatures characteristic for the Lakes Region in the middle of the summer.

8. Visit Castle In The Clouds

More truth time: I’ve never been to Castle In the Clouds, a historic mansion and estate in Moultonborough. My mom took her grandkids when they were younger, but as I recall, I begged off to relax lakeside, reading in a hammock.

Visitors to Castle in the Clouds can choose to tour the mansion, go horseback riding, or hike the area’s 28 miles of trails. It’s a great place to take in pretty views, have a bite on the patio at the Carriage House Restaurant, enjoy a bit of New England history, and simply stroll about a scenic spot.

9. Explore Wolfeboro’s Main Street

If you’re staying in a vacation rental in Wolfeboro, or at the gorgeous Wolfeboro Inn, a popular Lake Winnipesaukee hotel, consider yourself lucky! You’re in America’s First Summer Resort, so dubbed because John Wentworth, the British colonial governor of New Hampshire, built a mansion in this lakefront town in 1770 (yes, even before America became America).

If you’re overnighting elsewhere, consider a day trip to this quaint town to stroll its Main Street, where you can browse art galleries, gift shops, and clothing stores, and take some time for a meal at a waterfront cafe or one of the many area brewpubs!

10. Party At The Dive Boat Bar

It’s among the coolest floating bars and restaurants on Lake Winnipesaukee and the whole Lakes Region. You can find it at local hot spots and sand bars on the lake, serving up the tastiest cocktails, cold beer, and mouthwatering food. Sure, it attracts mostly 20- to 40-year-olds, but this aquatic playground provides on-lake restaurant party fun for all ages.

The Dive’s menu is loaded with tenders, dogs, kabobs, salads, wings, and sandwiches. They even have a kids’ menu. If you’re looking for a cruise or private charter, give The Dive a call. With their motto of “It’s always five on The Dive,” you’re bound to have a blast.

11. Attend A Concert At Bank Of New Hampshire Pavilion

It’s a 9,000-seat amphitheater that sits on Lake Winnipesaukee that began as a grass field and evolved into one of the best summer concert venues in New Hampshire. It even made USA Today‘s top summer venues in the U.S. list.

Those who go to concerts can camp overnight, tailgate and grill, and kick back with locals. See big country, rock, and pop names at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion performing outdoors in a pristine mountain setting. No matter the show, the visitors will surely enjoy great food mixed with great vibes.

What Are the Most Popular Lake Winnipesaukee Attractions?

Boating is the most popular attraction on Lake Winnipesaukee, whether it’s a dinner cruise or kayaking. With its many beautiful inlets and islands, it is just the beginning of things to do on Lake Winnipesaukee in the Lakes Region.

Is Lake Winnipesaukee Good For Fishing?

Fishing in Lake Winnipesaukee River is a wonderful experience all year round, whether it’s from the shore, from boats, or on the ice. With more than a dozen types of fish like salmon, trout, bass, and more, Lake Winnipesaukee will offer you the fishing adventures you crave.

Can I Ice-Skate On Lake Winnipesaukee?

Not really. The frozen surface of the lakes is less than ideal for ice skating, and seeing someone on ice skates is very rare. You see a whole lot more ice skaters at The Plymouth State University Ice Arena which offers programs to the general public.

Can I Sleep on My Boat on Lake Winnipesaukee?

Overnight sleeping is illegal in the State of NH, though you can sleep on your boat overnight while tied to a dock if you have the landowner’s permission. In addition, landowners must notify the Department of Environmental Services in writing.

How Many Islands on Lake Winnipesaukee Can Be Reached and Explored by Car?

There are six islands connected to the mainland by bridges: Black Cat Island, Long Island, Oak Island, Governor’s Island, Worcester Island, and Christmas Island. On other islands, there are no paved roads and access is by boat only.

A Mount Washington ship has been cruising beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee since 1872. After a fire destroyed the original vessel in 1939, no time was wasted and the S.S. Mount Washington II was launched August 15, 1940. Visitors have always been attracted to the lure of grand mountain views reflected in the serene waters. Weirs Beach, Lake Winnipesaukee: The Ultimate Guide

Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, is one of New Hampshire’s most epic destinations. Located in the northern corner of Laconia in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Weirs Beach is known as the “fun town” of Lake Winnipesaukee with everything from a long, sandy beach to a lovely boardwalk to drive-in movies to numerous arcades.

The original inhabitants of Weirs Beach were the Abenaquis Indigenous people, members of the Penacook tribe. They called their village Aquedoctan, meaning the “place of good fishing.” To catch the fish, they used a basket called a “weir,” which is where the town’s modern name comes from.

In the mid-19th century, railroads connecting Boston, Concord and Montreal stopped in Weirs Beach, making it a popular getaway destination for New Englanders that has continued to this day.

As for today? Weirs Beach still has it going on! This is one of the most popular spots to stay on Lake Winnipesaukee, and for good reason.

This post was most recently updated in May 2023.

Things to Do in Weirs Beach NH

Weirs Beach is a place for good old-fashioned fun for the whole family. During the day, hang out on the beach, take a lake cruise, stroll the boardwalk, or hit up the arcades.

By night, catch a drive-in movie, head to a brewery with board games, or enjoy nightlife along the town.

And this lake loves its fireworks shows! There are shows on Saturday nights from mid-July through early August, as well as shows on the Fourth of July and in mid-June for Laconia Motorcycle Week.

A wide wooden boardwalk lined with plaques with writing. Some benches to the side.

Stroll the Weirs Beach Boardwalk

Weirs Beach’s boardwalk is what makes this town special! The boardwalk runs along Lakeside Avenue and takes in the best views of the town, with lots of benches for sitting and enjoying it. The boardwalk offers direct access to the beach and there are several historic placards telling you the story of the town over the years.

Strolling along the pier, you’ll learn about how Weirs Beach welcomed the Lady of the Lake steamship in 1849, how they held reunions for Civil War veterans in 1875, and how it became a hot spot for music concerts (10 cents to attend, 20 cents to dance in 1903!).

The Winnipesaukee Pier dates back to 1925 and was a popular spot for big bands of the time. Today it’s home to waterfront dining, jet ski rentals, and an arcade, Games on the Pier.

A pier with about a dozen speedboats docked in front of a white building. It's a clear blue day on the lake.

Arcades and More Fun

Just off the boardwalk, Weirs Beach is home to lots of fun. You’ve got the Half Moon Penny Arcade, with both old-fashioned and modern arcade games; Cook’s Candy Kitchen will satisfy your sweet tooth, and you’ve got plenty of spots for fried dough, slush, and ice cream. (And some booze for the grown-ups.)

And there’s shopping: Half Moon Gifts is your stop for quirky New England souvenirs, plus loads of other fun shops.

Don’t forget to take a spin on the bumper cars!

And within a short drive of Weirs Beach you have everything from the legendary Weirs Beach go-kart track to bumper boat rentals, a climbing wall, and several miniature golf courses like Pirate’s Cove . Also nearby is Gunstock Mountain Resort , with outdoor fun all four seasons of the year. And that’s before you even get to Funspot , the largest arcade in the world, right in Weirs Beach…

Enjoy one of New Hampshire’s Best Beaches

Weirs Beach itself, known as “The Weirs” by locals, is one of the most wonderful lake beaches in New Hampshire. It’s not huge — just 640 feet at its widest point — but the sand is soft and the waves are gentle. The end of the beach closest to the boardwalk tends to be a bit shallower, which makes it a good option for young children.

From Weirs Beach you have wonderful views of Lake Winnipesaukee’s islands and the blue Ossipee Mountains in the distance. Endicott Rock, located on site, is the oldest public monument in New England, dating back to 1652.

The beach is part of Endicott Rock Park and free to visit, but parking is paid. Facilities at the beach include picnic tables, a playground, and restroom facilities. Lifeguards are present during the day from June through August.

Cruise Lake Winnipesaukee

Mount Washington Cruises is headquartered in Weirs Beach, making it a great getaway to exploring the lake. There are several different kinds of cruises. If you’re looking for a basic narrated cruise exploring the lake, take a ride on the M / S Mt. Washington. This 2.5-hour cruises stops in Alton Bay and Wolfeboro as well, and if you depart early, you can hop on and off. This basic cruise is $45 plus service and fuel fees.

Other cruises include a sunset dinner cruise, a Sunday brunch cruise, and a summer cocktail cruise.

We at New Hampshire Way are especially big fans of cruising on the M / V Sophie C , which is a smaller boat — an actual USPS mailboat! The boat is a floating post office, and you sail around the islands and deliver mail along the way. It’s so fun and unique that we named it one of our favorite things to do in New Hampshire .

A giant arcade, dim and lit with red light.

Funspot is literally the largest arcade on the planet. Seriously! It’s in the Guinness Book of World Records. Altogether, there are more than 600 arcade games here — 300 of them vintage. Far more than just Pac-Man, there are lots of niche games that you might remember from 40 years ago. This part of the facility is the American Classic Arcade Museum.

And it’s far more than just arcade games. You can go bowling, do indoor mini golf, or join in competitive Bingo with cash prizes!

With a restaurant on site and plenty of party facilities, this is our top choice of what to do on a rainy day in Lake Winnipesaukee.

Take a Ride on the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad

New Hampshire has no shortage of scenic train rides (we especially love the Conway Scenic Railroad, one of the best things to do in North Conway ). The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad is a beautiful journey on an old-fashioned train that travels along the edge of the lake. This journey was once part of the Maine Railroad.

The journey starts in Meredith before heading to Weirs Beach and continuing along Lake Winnipesaukee and Paugus Bay. You can book tickets either from Meredith or Weirs Beach; the journey from Meredith is two hours and the journey from Weirs Beach is one hour.

The one-hour ride from the Weirs Beach train station costs $22.50 for adults and $17.50 for children ages 4 to 17. If you choose to take the two-hour ride from Meredith, tickets cost $25 for adults and $20 for children ages 4 to 17.

See a Movie at the Weirs Drive-In Theatre

Visiting New Hampshire sometimes feels like going back in time, and one reason is the abundance of drive-in movie theaters. The Weirs Drive-In has been open since 1949, and to this day shows films throughout the spring and summer. One of the most fun activities in a town full of fun activities!

There are four screens at the theater, and they play both classic and modern films. And you don’t have to pop your own popcorn — they have plenty of refreshments on site.

The Weirs Drive-In costs $20 per car for up to 2 people and $10 for any additional people. Children under 4 are free.

Visit the Breweries of Lake Winnipesaukee

Twin Barns Brewing is one of our favorite breweries in New Hampshire , and it’s just an eight-minute drive from Weirs Beach. This brewery has an interesting collection of beers, delicious food, a big deck, and tons of board games to play. This brewery we consider to be family-friendly.

If you’re willing to go further afield, the town of Bristol, 25 minutes from Weirs Beach, is home to Woodman’s Brewery and Shacketts Brewing Company , two smaller breweries with great owners. You can also drive around the lake to Wolfeboro (40 minutes), which is home to Lone Wolfe Brewing Company and Burnt Timber Brewing and Tavern .

As always, be sure to have a designated driver. If not, you can get a cheap taxi to Twin Barns. Weirs Beach is also home to Craft Beer Xchange , a beer bar with lots of interesting brews.

Visit Other Lake Winnipesaukee Towns

One of the nice things about Lake Winnipesaukee is that each town has its own personality!

We especially love Meredith, which has more of an upmarket feel, a beautiful waterfront area with sculptures, and is home to some excellent shops and restaurants.

Wolfeboro is famously “America’s oldest summer resort” (we’re not sure HOW accurate that is, but hey, why not?) and it has a wonderful downtown area.

And don’t forget Moultonborough, home to Castle in the Clouds and the Old Country Store! It’s the perfect place for a day trip on the lake.

And that’s before you get into the many islands that dot the lake.

Where to Stay in Weirs Beach NH

We have a full guide on where to stay on Lake Winnipesaukee, but here are our top picks for Weirs Beach:

High-end: Lakeview Inn & Cottages . This hotel is arguably the nicest place to stay in Weirs Beach, with a choice of tastefully decorated inn rooms or cozy wood-paneled cabins. The property has a swimming pool and serves breakfast, and an outdoor seating area overlooks the lake.

Mid-range: Grand View Motel and Cottages . While the rooms here are a bit dated, we love the cozy quilts, outdoor patios (in some rooms and cabins) and views of the lake. This is one of the top-rated properties in Weirs Beach.

Budget: Half Moon Motel & Cottages . A perennially popular accommodation option for families, Half Moon has clean, comfortable rooms and cottages, plus a swimming pool and easy access to the lake.

As for rentals, here are a few of our favorites in Weirs Beach:

This two-bedroom condo is great value for money , a short walk from Weirs Beach.

This purple Victorian house right on the beach is our FAVORITE home in Weirs Beach and you can actually stay there! It’s a bit pricey, but gorgeous.

Best Time to Visit Weirs Beach

Weirs Beach is very much a summer destination, and it’s busy from June through August. This is when you’ll have the biggest crowds and highest accommodation prices — but you’re here for summer fun! Our team recently visited Weirs Beach in early September and it was extremely quiet. As soon as kids go back to school, that’s it for the season.

Visiting Weirs Beach and Lake Winnipesaukee in the off-season can be a quiet but pleasant time to visit. The lake is especially beautiful during the peak of fall foliage season, which usually hits in mid-October.

The biggest event of the year in Weirs Beach is Laconia Motorcycle Week (aka Bike Week), the world’s oldest motorcycle rally (!!), which takes place in mid-June each year. During this time, many roads on Weirs Beach are closed to traffic and become pedestrian-only.

It can be a fun time to visit, but accommodation tends to book out very quickly, and we recommend avoiding this time if you hate the roar of motorcycles.

How to Get to Weirs Beach

Weirs Beach is located in the town of Laconia, and the best way to get there is by driving. Weirs Beach is about a 45-minute drive from Concord, an hourlong drive from Manchester, and a one-hour and 45-minute drive from Boston. When you see the famous neon sign, you’re here!

There is plenty of parking in Weirs Beach, and most of the convenient spots are paid but low cost for day-trippers (think around $1 per hour). You can pay for parking with a credit card, which is convenient.

There are some bus lines that go to nearby Tilton, but that’s the closest thing you have to public transportation.

Is Weirs Beach worth it?

Yes, of course! Weirs Beach is very much worth it. It’s a fun, affordable, family-friendly destination and absolutely beautiful in the summertime.

After your first trip here, don’t be surprised if you come back every summer! Lake Winnipesaukee has a way of getting under your skin.

Depends largely on what you want to do - be on the water or be in the mountains.

I'm partial to staying in the Jackson/Bartlett/Glen area, because my "water" time when I'm in NH is more river floating/waterfalls than lake boating, and I like to be in the National Forest for hiking. If you're interested in the boating scene, stay in the Lake W area. They are close enough to each other that you don't need to have lodging in separate places.

Yes, depends on what you prefer to do as the above poster said. It is a "toss up" like you say. The one thing I should point out is whether your late August time frame is before or after labor day. May make a significant difference in room rates and crowds. I am partial to mountains myself and would stay in Jackson every time, but some of the towns on lake W are also very pretty eg Meredith. Again, whichever area you base in, you can easily do the 2 loops you mention, one each day.

Thanks to both of you
