UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Find out more about these locations on one of the following pub crawls.

Soho Music and Historic Pubs Tour

Visit venues made famous by bands such as The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and other musical artists.

This outing focuses on the history of famous and notable people who once lived in (or at least drank in) Soho.

As with other pub crawls, you'll be on your own when it comes to how many beers to drink, but you'll receive plenty of recommendations and a lot of historical facts about each of the pubs included on this tour.

  • Where: Piccadilly Circus.
  • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes.
  • When: Daily at 2 pm (14:00).
  • Cost: £29 per person.

Much like their West End pub crawl, this outing is also very well-priced and you'll have the chance to decide how much (or little) you want to drink along the way.

This tour will take you to some of the most notable bars and pubs in Soho, providing details about the musicians and artists who used to live in the area and visit these locations.

Aside from the history of the pubs, you'll also learn about notable sites between each stop and some of the buildings where celebrities once lived.

  • Where: Piccadilly Circus Station.
  • Duration: 3 hours.
  • When: Daily at 1 pm (13:00).
  • Cost: £25 per person.
  • Book your tour or learn more .

The area is known for its impressive music scene, having once been home to big-name musicians like Amy Winehouse.

In addition to their West End Pub Crawl, this company also offers an outing in Camden as well. Much like their other crawls, this is one of the best-priced options on our entire list!

The Camden Pub Crawl includes admission to 5 different bars, free shots at every venue, and drink deals with their exclusive wristband.

  • Where: Meet at Simon's Camden Town, next to Camden Town Station
  • When: Friday and Saturday

Undiscovered London

Advertised as "the original Camden Pub Crawl", this tour by Undiscovered London is extremely popular with 20 and 30-something visitors hoping to explore Camden's nightlife.

A ticket to the tour gets you free shots, free entry, drinks discounts, and no waiting in line.

As with most pub crawls, this one averages about 4 out of 5 stars.

NOTE: As of March 2023, there is no word about whether or not this tour will be offered again this year. That said, most pub crawls are returning this summer, so keep an eye out.

  • Where: Belushi’s Camden, 48-50 Camden High Street, NW1 0LT
  • Duration:  TBD
  • When:   Nightly, starting between 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm (19:30 and 21:30)

  • When:  Nightly starting between 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm (19:30-20:30)

Shoreditch is a very trendy area with lots of interesting street art and coolly converted warehouses.

The pub crawls in this neighbourhood cover both the history of the area and of course the pubs you will visit.

As with their West End and Camden Pub Crawls, this company also provides a similar outing in Shoreditch.

This is one of the most affordable options on our list, and it also includes savings of up to £50 or more on your night out.

This Shoreditch pub crawl provides free entry to 5 bars, free shots at every location, and a variety of drink deals with their exclusive wristband.

  • Where : The Star at 243 Old St ( map )
  • Hours : Starts at 7:30 pm

London Party Pub Crawl

Similar in style to their Central London Pub Crawl, this company's Shoreditch Pub Crawl is another popular alternative for young people looking for a fun night out.

You will visit at least 5 different bars/clubs and get a free shot at each one.

The tour's overall review profile is good, just like their Central London crawl, averaging just over 4 out of 5 stars.

Though the tour is scheduled to last approximately 5 hours, most guests seem to carry on well into the night because they're having such a great time!

  • Where:  333 Old Street, Shoreditch ( map )
  • When:  Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm (19:30)
  • Cost: £25 (discounts often available)

HISTORIC LONDON PUBS TOURS

Unlike the tours listed above, Historic Pub Crawls have a much greater focus on history and tend to appeal to a wider audience.

Typically, these pub crawls take place in the afternoon or early evening, making for a more mature experience.

Guides share their in-depth knowledge of the history of each pub, as well as entertaining anecdotes about London's drinking culture.

Most of the Historic Pub Crawls only include 1 beer sample at the end of the tour.

Drink London (Liquid History Tours) - London Pub Tour

Described as a "gentle 2-mile amble", the London Pub Tour by Drink London will bring you to some of the most historic pubs in the city.

This is the only company solely dedicated to running historic pub crawls in London, which is probably why they do such an amazing job (just read the reviews).

You will visit at least 4 stops throughout the tour, sampling as many beverages as you wish along the way. Drinks are not included in the price.

  • Where:  outside St Paul's underground station (Exit 2) on Panyer Alley
  • Duration:  3.5 hours
  • When: Nightly at 7 pm (19:00)
  • More information or to book .

As you move from pub to pub, be prepared to learn all about "London's seedy drink-obsessed past whilst taking in the splendour of modern-day London and sensing the ghosts of yesteryear at some of the city’s top landmarks."

At the end of the tour, you will get to enjoy half a pint which is included in the price. No other drinks are included, though guests can buy beverages along the way.

Rather than visiting several notable pubs, this bus tour actually includes an open-air rooftop bar that offers a variety of drinks.

This bus tour visits some of the most popular landmarks in the city, including the River Thames, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.

Tickets can be purchased with either 2 Meantime London Lagers, 2 cans of G&T, 2 Prosecco Miniatures, half a bottle of Rose wine, or soft drinks.

13 Of The Best Pub Crawls In London To Get The Party Started This Festive Season

From pub crawls in search of ghosts and ghouls to following in the footsteps of Hollywood royalty, here’s our roundup of the best pub crawls in London.

Samuel Hopkins

London ain’t exactly short of pubs . In fact, we’ve got over 3,500 pubs to choose from in our beloved city, from pubs with lush beer gardens (a lot of which are heated! ) to pubs dating all the way back to 1430. But how exactly are you supposed to whittle down where to go? Luckily for you dear reader we’ve decided to help you out with this little challenge you find yourselves with. Here’s our rundown of 13 of the best pub crawls in London:

1. Camden Pub Crawl

The iconic Camden Highline in Camden, North London

Ah Camden … the beating heart of London’s alternative fashion, lifestyle and music scene – and the previous home of Secret London before we made our way into central central. Whether you love the neighbourhood or actively want to avoid the crowds, you can’t deny that there are some pretty epic spots here in which to sink a pint.

From metal pubs to alternative clubs and live music venues , there’s plenty here for every kind of drinker , and this lively pub crawl will help you to see the best of it. Taking you all the way until 3am, you’ll get to enjoy drink deals, free shots, speedy entry, and fun party games along the way. We’ll cheers to that!

2. Shoreditch Pub Crawl

The famous tube trains above Village Underground in Shoreditch, East London

The pub and bar scene in Shoreditch , arguably the hub of East London, has become the stuff of legend over the past fifteen or so years. Some of the venues found here are regularly named among the world’s best cocktail bars, while you can also find a great boozer or two to while away a few hours.

This guided pub crawl will give you the chance to wander down the graffiti-filled streets and explore the area’s best pubs and bars, ending up in the wee hours dancing at a lively club. Sounds like a good night on the cards…

3. Historical London Pub Crawl

The exterior of the Lamb and Flag pub near Covent Garden in London

In a city that can be traced all the way back to Roman times, it’s no surprise that we have some of the most fascinating history in the world here. Ok, so we might be biassed, but we stand by it. That goes for our pubs too, some of which date all the way back to the 15th century.

This self-guided pub crawl will give you the opportunity to explore some of London Town’s oldest boozers . Starting at the cosy Ye Olde Mitre in Farringdon – rumoured to be where Queen Elizabeth I herself danced around a cherry tree with Sir Christopher Hatton – you’ll make your way to The Lamb and Flag in Covent Garden .

4. Monopoly Pub Crawl

The route of the Monopoly board which is the basis for one of the best pub crawls in London

As the name suggests, this London pub crawl will take you around the 26 different locations found on the Monopoly board. Starting off at the Lord Nelson on Old Kent Road – a ‘proper boozer’ according to Pubs Galore – you’ll continue around the Monopoly board until you reach the final stop in glitzy Mayfair. That is if you’re still standing after 26 pints of course… maybe just do halves on this particular bar crawl?

5. West End Pub Crawl

The famous plaza of Covent Garden Market in Central London

Soho and the West End are arguably the beating heart of London and the London nightlife scene, so what better place to enjoy a pub crawl than here hey?! This guided tour will give you a real insight into this iconic part of the capital – you’ll explore the pulse of Shaftesbury Avenue , see the street performers of Leicester Square and will take a wander around Covent Garden’s famous piazza.

You’ll hang out with fellow revellers and will experience exactly what makes this part of London tick on this London party pub crawl. Expect added drinks deals, complimentary shots at cocktail clubs , discounted entry and much more on this worthy addition to this roundup of the best pub crawls in London.

6. Circle Line Pub Crawl

An extensive map of the London tube network showing the circle line in Central London

With an impressive 27 stops, this ultimate London pub crawl is certainly not for the faint-hearted. Many have attempted it – not all have made it through – but if you’re up for the challenge, then it’s certainly worth a try.

You’ll follow the entirety of the Circle Line on this one – that is the yellow line on the map which is shaped like a circle. Duh. Given that it’s a literal circle, you can choose to start (and finish) exactly where you want, and all you need is an Oyster card or contactless card. Happy pub crawling!

7. Clapham Pub Crawl

The exterior of Clapham Common station where the Clapham pub crawl occurs

Heading south of the river, you’ll find Clapham, a fashionable and vibrant district frequented by young professionals which is known for its cafes, pubs, markets and large (and green) common. This guided pub crawl will give you the opportunity to discover some of the SW4’s best bars and pubs – ending up in someone raucous where you can let loose and dance.

Along the way you’ll enjoy fun and hilarious party games, great drinks deals, speedy entry and damn good value for money – now you can’t say fairer than that right?

8. Sam Smith’s Pub Crawl

The exterior of The Chandos, a Sam Smith's pub near Trafalgar Square

Sam Smith – no, not the singer – pubs are pretty much an institution in London Town. Only stocking Samuel Smith’s Brewery products, they’re packed full of history and are surprisingly affordable – great if you’re looking to not spend a fortune. The Sam Smith’s pub crawl will take you on a meandering mile-and-a-half-long route through Central London, taking in ten of these iconic spots.

Starting at *ahem* The Cock in Great Portland Street, you’ll end up at The Chandos right by Trafalgar Square. Along the way, you’ll pass by the famous pubs The Red Lion and the John Snow – both just off Carnaby Street .

9. London Party Pub Crawl

A group of friends drinking some pints on a pub crawl in London

For an incredible night out in London of drinks deals, free shots, and plenty of (standing-up) crawling, look no further than this London party pub crawl . Starting from Rumba on Shaftesbury Avenue, your hosts will take you to five of the very best venues that London’s nightlife has to offer. Have a great time out with exclusive drink deals and complimentary shots at every venue! You can grab your tickets for it here .

10. Wimbledon Eight Pub Crawl

The exterior of the Crooked Billet pub on Wimbledon Common, one of the stops on one of the best pub crawls in London

Another worthy addition to this roundup of the best pub crawls in London, the so-called ‘Wimbledon Eight Pub Crawl’ will make you follow in the footsteps of one of Hollywood’s most notorious hellraisers – the legend that was Oliver Reed.

The star of ‘ Oliver! ’ and ‘ Gladiator ’ used to frequent the eight pubs that surrounded Wimbledon Common, and though two have now shut, this pub crawl follows the route of the other six. Rumour has it that Reed would give himself 15 minutes at each pub along the route, knocking back a pint quickly before moving on. We’d personally like to take our time a bit more – but it’s up to you!

11. London Literary Pub Crawl

The Fitzroy Tavern pub in Fitzrovia, London

Another contender for one of the best pub crawls in London, the ‘ London Literary Pub Crawl ‘ – as the name would suggest – follows the pubs and taverns that inspired some of the greatest creative minds in the world. Hosted by tour guides who double as famous writers – Charles Dickens and Virginia Woolf we’re looking at you – you’ll explore the ‘ best bohemian boozers in town ’.

Starting in Fitzrovia and ending up in Soho, you’ll also visit some boozers including those relevant to songwriters such as Sir Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix. You’ll also visit pubs and bars associated with the British Film industry and modern writers. So you never know who you might bump into…!

12. London’s Spookiest Pubs Pub Crawl

The tiny and thin exterior of Ye Olde Cock Tavern in Fleet Street, London

Spurned lovers, corrupt clerics and debtors on the run have all found their end in some of London’s locals. The haunted London pub crawl takes you around some of the capital’s most infamous watering holes, giving you the chance to hear some gruesome tales and maybe encounter a spirit or two – and we’re not just talking about a swig of gin!

You’ll get to discover the fictional address of Sweeney Todd, learn about public executions gone wrong and hunt out some historical grave robbers! Of course, there’ll be time for a few swift rounds to bolster your nerves. Take care though, you never know who’s lurking in the wine cellar… this is one of the world’s most haunted cities after all .

13. Wetherspoons Pub Crawl

The exterior of a Wetherspoons in Holborn, London

Our final addition to this pub crawls in London roundup offers you a real challenge. Trust us. Picture this – 12 pints in 12 spoons in 12 hours. Ok, so you don’t actually have to have a whole pint in each – we’d like you to actually remember it – but the aptly-named ‘Wetherspoons Loop’ does in fact take in 12 different Wetherspoons, separated by just a kilometre of the city.

Starting at The Lord Moon Of The Mall in Whitehall, you’ll end up at The Sir John Hawkshaw in Cannon Street. Stops along the way include The Knights Templar in Chancery Lane – a former Union Bank – and the famous Montagu Pyke in Soho.

So there you have it – a roundup of the best pub crawls in London for you to whet your whistle! Whether you’re wanting to just have a few or are wanting to hit up all the Spoons in Central with a group of mates on Christmas Eve – then we’ve got you covered! Drink safe, mind.

Exterior of the Black Dog pub in Vauxhall

Taylor Swift fans flock to London pub apparently referenced on new album

Staff at the Black Dog in Vauxhall ‘100% certain’ theirs is the pub mentioned in song of the same name

Last Thursday was shaping up to be a normal day for the Black Dog pub in south London , until its social media traffic mysteriously started ramping up.

The reason was that Taylor Swift’s new album had leaked, featuring a song that shared its name. Within an hour of its release, the small venue was deluged with excited fans, while its staff scoured CCTV for a sighting of the world’s biggest pop star.

Over the course of the weekend, thousands of devoted Swifties, as Taylor’s fans call themselves, descended on Vauxhall to feel closer to their favourite artist. The Black Dog’s lyrics reference spotting that an ex-boyfriend was entering the pub – most likely the British actor Joe Alwyn, who lives in the area.

Lily Bottomley, an events and social manager for SC Soho, the small hospitality group that owns the Black Dog, said the mention had taken the neighbourhood pub by surprise.

“I was like, wow, what a coincidence, that’s crazy. Then traffic got bigger, and then just exploded when her album went live. We created a TikTok, started posting, interacting with fans. We’re completely booked out this week and we’re nearly full for her tour dates. It’s been amazing for the business, the fans have been overwhelmingly positive,” she said.

The atmosphere was one of “celebration, super jovial, really good vibes” at the weekend, Bottomley said, adding that the pub had hired last-minute security to deal with the surge.

Bottomley said fans were particularly interested to learn whether it was Alwyn or Swift’s other British ex-boyfriend, Matty Healy, referred to in the song. She has confirmed that the pub has had “a certain blond regular in a few times”, in a coy reference to Alwyn’s hair colour.

She is “100% certain” the pub is the one referenced in the song, since Swift has previously talked about nights out in neighbouring Brixton.

She said: “We’ve been looking at past security footage [for Swift]. We haven’t found anything but you never know. I’ve heard that whenever she visits places she puts a cap on, so we could have missed it. We’d love to have her back.”

When the Guardian visited at the pub’s opening at midday on Monday, a steady stream of Swifties were paying their respects.

Emilia Linton, 24, and Katie McGowan, 28, had rushed to the Black Dog before flying home to Vienna, and were keen to secure some content for their Instagram Stories.

“It makes you feel the song more, because you know what she’s referencing,” Linton said. “She’s a lyrical genius, she introduced me to country, and she makes it cool to be a girl again.”

While McGowan had expected a dingier locals’ pub, Linton argued that the upmarket gastropub’s “sweet, girlie” ambience was more fitting.

The pair’s friend, Liz, 23, from Leeds, said: “It feels very like, if you’re American, what you’d think a pub was. I just don’t see Taylor Swift in a ’Spoons.”

She had previously enjoyed visiting the Beechwood cafe in LA, mentioned in a Harry Styles song, and was keen to recreate the experience. “I just love getting recommendations, from friends and stuff – including my close personal friend Taylor,” Liz said.

The trio welcomed fellow Swift fan Tyler Ewings, 18, on to their table. He was visiting from Plymouth. “I thought I’d come see what it’s like, take in the vibe of it,” he said. “Swifties are a very tight-knit community and actually kind of loving. If you go to a concert you’ll talk to loads of people outside the venue.”

He said the specificity of the pub’s mention made him feel more connected to Swift. “With London Boy she referenced all kinds of places in London, but to target one place, it feels like she’s gone in deeper.”

Julien Dimitrov, 30, had dragged his reluctant boyfriend to the pub on the final day of their holiday before returning to the Czech Republic. When he realised the Black Dog was in London, he was thrilled by the coincidence. “I immediately thought I must visit it,” he said.

The pub’s mention reflects all that he cherishes in Swift: “She’s so open, so friendly, so human, down to earth, relatable – even though she’s famous.”
