Queer-inclusive reality dating show 'Love Trip: Paris' breaks TV barriers on Freeform

"Love Trip: Paris" offers viewers a new take on reality TV.

Freeform's new "Love Trip: Paris" does what many other reality dating shows don't.

Reality TV has been criticized for its lack of diversity in race, gender expression, sexuality and body type. "Love Trip: Paris," by contrast, offers contestants a chance to find love in a structure that embraces the spectrum of gender and sexuality, featuring an inclusive cast of potential suitors, its showrunners and contestants say.

In this series, four American singles -- Josielyn Aguilera, Caroline Renner, Rose Zilla-Ba and Lacy Hartselle -- head to France to find the Parisian partner of their dreams.

The four contestants meet and date potential suitors of all genders and sexualities, choosing just a lucky few to take on dates.

"We're so used to seeing shows that are so whitewashed and heteronormative … but let's see the way the world has changed and has progressed," Hartselle, a pansexual woman -- which means she's open to being attracted to all gender identities -- told ABC News.

Each episode, there's an elimination, where some suitors may be sent packing and new suitors come in to make a connection with the show's stars.

Hartselle said she grew up in a traditional Christian household in the South and found it hard to embrace her truest self growing up as a queer woman and eventual divorcee.

Seeing queer representation and romance on television in an authentic way is something she said she wishes she could have seen on screen as a young woman.

"There was so much I did not know and so much ignorance -- and ignorance is what leads to division," she said. "I just am beaming at the thought of what we have done by just being ourselves, by bringing our very human fullness, our strengths, our weaknesses, everything to the screen. You see us all, in all of our beautiful vulnerable glory."

Aguilera, a transgender and bisexual Latina woman told ABC News she similarly grew up in a misogynistic culture. She said she hopes the stories on "Love Trip: Paris" can inspire the next generation of viewers looking for guidance on love, romance, and friendships.

"I hope that this really breaks that glass ceiling, of letting other shows like this exist," Aguilera said. "I hope this really breaks that and we get to start seeing more like LGBT people fall in love and more people of color fall in love -- more people in general just fall in love."

Renner, a nonbinary lesbian, told ABC News that showrunners reached out to her initially to explain the show's diversity goals, with which she was immediately on board. "I was like, 'Yes!' Like, I have been waiting for this moment to see something like this on television," she said.

Renner, who goes by she/they pronouns, continued, "It is so important to see every shape, size, color, sexuality, gender on television. Art reflects the world that we live in, and so, the world that we live in can't be reflected unless it shows every ounce of diversity possible and I am so proud of how diverse this show is."

Zilla-Ba, a straight woman who is Black, told ABC News that the inclusivity made her feel comfortable throughout her dating journey on the show. She said not having to worry about her safety allowed her to "let myself shine."

PHOTO: A scene from "Love Trip: Paris."

"As a woman of color, dating people off of apps, you don't really know if it is a safe experience for you, and as for the other girls, all being queer, it's really scary dating in the real world in that way," Zilla-Ba said.

Reality TV has also been critiqued for failing to create space for people of marginalized groups to thrive. "Love Trip: Paris" executive producer Susan House said that this was one of the showrunners' main priorities.

"We want to help these girls, we want them to find love," House said in an interview. "But we also want them to have the most true experience possible. We wanted to give them room to express themselves, talk about things in interviews, talk to each other, like we wanted to just give them a safe space to really live these journeys."

The cast members say they have already received praise about the show's diversity and its impact on viewers. They hope the world can learn that queer love is normal, and that "this is just who we are," Hartselle said.

Added Renner, "Love is love no matter what shape, size, color, gender, anything you are. We all have beating hearts. We all want to find love. Love is what makes the world go round. And we all deserve to find it."

Zilla-Ba agreed. "Not just that love is love," she said, "but you can have that fairytale type of love, no matter what kind of love it is."

Though the cast's final love matches have yet to be revealed, it's clear they were able to find loving friendships with each other.

"We really became a sisterhood and we really truly bonded so much, and it just means so much to have you girls in my life," Aguilera said, speaking to her castmates.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of both Freeform and ABC News.

‘Love Trip: Paris’ Cast On ‘Emotional’ Evictions & The One ‘Goal’ They Vowed To Stick By (Exclusive)

The 'Love Trip: Paris' cast opens up about the unbreakable 'bond' they formed as they tried to find love in the City of Lights.

Love Trip: Paris

There’s no better place to look for love than Paris, right? Well, Caroline Renner , Josielyn Aguilera , Lacy Hartselle , and Rose Zilla-Ba are doing just that. The stars of Freeform’s new series Love Trip: Paris , which airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m., spoke EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife about staying united on this journey.

Love Trip: Paris

“That was our only goal,” Caroline said. “Whether or not we found somebody, whether or not we walked out of there with the love of our lives or whatever it was, if we even got to that point, our only goal was what’s best for all of us is best for everybody. If we don’t support each other we have nothing. Our first loves were with each other, and that’s what continued us through the journey.”

Josielyn added, “Our hearts all became one. We all stood together as one… We were all really in it together. We all really looked out for each other.”

Lacy reflected on the bond that they formed as they went on parallel trips to find love. “We have this type of a bond that no one but the four of us will ever be able to understand, and it is such a gift,” she told HollywoodLife . “It does keep giving. We evolved together on the show. We watched each other navigate everything and experienced every emotion that you could imagine, and we really held each other strong. There was so much acceptance and love and respect and pride in the way that we view one another.”

Caroline got emotional about this “pivotal point” in her life. “To be able to watch that back, it’s like the gift that keeps on giving. The connections that we’ve made between the four of us is something that I’m never going to be able to express my complete gratitude for. This experience has touched my heart and my life so much,” she said through tears.

These four American girls have been unlucky in love in the United States, so they’ve moved to Paris to try and find their soulmates. Rose pointed out the biggest difference between the dating pool in Paris vs. the U.S.

“I think that culturally love is really important to the French. It’s really a culture of embracing that and beauty and romance is such a big thing,” she explained. “I think in the U.S. dating is much more casual, which is okay for some people. But the French really take things seriously almost to an extent we weren’t really expecting.”

As for how their journey to find love in Paris ends in the final chapter o f Love Trip: Paris , Rose remained coy: “I think we all try living life with no regrets and this show is ourselves just put out there. I think, as an experience, it was an amazing and life-changing one.”

Each week the women will have to make tough decisions in “eviction” ceremonies. If there’s a suitor they have a connection with, the key to their lock won’t open. If they’re ready to move on, the suitor’s key will open the lock.

Love Trip: Paris

“Evictions were very emotional,” Lacy said. “To be honest, it was because everyone was amazing. Even if there were people that maybe you didn’t have a romantic connection with you cared about them and they cared about you. Their energy made a statement, and it was noticed when it was gone. Evictions were hard.”

Love Trip: Paris is groundbreaking television in that we’re watching Josielyn, a trans woman, find love on TV. “It means everything to me. I don’t think you understand how important this is for me, for the community, for the trans community,” she told HollywoodLife . “This is a big thing and a real big moment and I feel like I just want people to see that I’m just like any one of these other girls trying to figure out love and romance. I deserve love and respect, and so does everyone else, and so do other trans men and women out there. It’s so huge that we’re able to show this experience on TV and on Freeform and on this platform… I just want to be myself. I definitely feel like the biggest thing for me was that I felt like I was 100% myself with these girls. I felt like I was never judged. I felt like I could just be me. It was the best experience for me.”

Josielyn Aguilera Is Looking for Love on Reality TV After Her ‘Quantum Leap’ Debut

Elizabeth Randolph - Author

Feb. 7 2023, Published 11:43 a.m. ET

Those who tune into Quantum Leap might recognize Josielyn Aguilera from Season 1, Episode 12, “Let Them Play.” In the episode, Ben (Raymond Lee) travels back to 2012 to help the Mendez family with their transgender daughter, Gia (played by Josielyn). Like Gia, Josielyn came out as trans in high school and also transitioned during that time.

Despite feeling misunderstood by her community, she stayed true to herself and now seemingly radiates confidence. However, is the rising star dating anyone? Here’s the scoop on Josielyn Aguilera’s dating life and how she’s using her newfound fame to find love!

Who is Josielyn Aguilera dating? She filmed herself looking for love on Freeform.

Josielyn doesn’t seem to be dating anyone, but that could change soon. In 2022, Josielyn teamed up with fellow influencers Caroline Renner , Lacy Hartselle , and Rose Zilaba to film an international dating show, Love Trip: Paris . According to the Freeform show’s synopsis, the women packed their bags for a chance at finding love overseas.

“Four American girls, unlucky in love in their own country, move into a penthouse in the middle of Paris to find a floor of French suitors waiting to date them,” the description reads. “Is this love trip to Paris their one-way ticket to romance, or are they headed for heartbreak in another language?"

Love Trip: Paris will be Josielyn’s first venture into reality TV. The opportunity was seemingly challenging for her since the trailer shows her going from beaming over a guy who is “so hot” to later crying in another scene. Nevertheless, Josielyn possibly found someone, as she declared on Instagram that she was leaving the show with a new lover.

“Is Love worth the risk? ♥️” Josielyn captioned an Instagram post featuring a Love Trip: Paris photo. “Oui oui, love is definitely in the air in Paris. So let’s get ready to French kiss that single life goodbye.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Love Trip Paris (@lovetrip)

Josielyn Aguilera hasn’t posted her ‘Love Trip: Paris’ boo online.

Josielyn’s socials don’t show any sign of a relationship , and we couldn’t find any details on her dating history. Josielyn may be dating someone later once Love Trip: Paris airs on Freeform. The actor likely signed an NDA not to discuss her matches until the show airs, and the new celeb doesn’t want to mess up her coin.

Josielyn’s acting debut came in 2022 as Amira in the film Jacked . Since then, she has appeared on the TV series Not so Straight in Silver Lake and Quantum Leap . The photogenic artist also isn’t camera shy, as she fills her Instagram with steamy, high fashion photos.

Love Trip: Paris airs Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, on Freeform at 9 p.m. EST.

‘Love Trip Paris’ Brings Inclusivity and Diversity To Reality Dating Shows

'Love Trip: Paris' is a reality dating show that viewers have never seen before.

Reality television has always had a place, but it feels like it's in its prime right now, specifically when it comes to dating reality shows. Over time, the subgenre has reinvented itself, with new models like Love Is Blind and Too Hot To Handle that show different approaches to building a lasting connection. The former tries to prove looks aren't important, and that it's what connection you build that dictates relationship success. The latter takes really attractive people and restricts them from hooking up with each other in the hopes they'll form real connections. These two -- plus shows like The Bachelor , 90 Day Fiancé , and Love Island -- are fantastic. They bring a little drama into our lives, watching the story of complete strangers falling in love over and over again. While dating shows have worked, they've also become monotonous.

Until the recent shows mentioned, the formula has become repetitive and predictable. A lot of them have the same recipe: a man dates multiple women and picks a winner, or vice versa. It's not at all reflective of the progressive society we mostly reside in currently. Dating is no longer black and white. And as entertaining as it can be, the reality dating world is lacking a huge community of people. That's where Love Trip: Paris comes in, and holy crêpe it is juicy, addicting, and inclusive.

A breath of fresh paris air.

Love Trip: Paris is a Freeform original that also streams on Hulu . The premise of the show chronicles four American women who travel across the pond to meet some French suitors. Reality tv has always been criticized for the lack of diversity in sexuality, race, and gender expression. Love Trip: Paris breaks those barriers. It is a basic tale of a bunch of singles living in a house together, reminiscent of The Real World , and entirely subverts all expectations by not following strict heteronormativity. Three of the four women in the show are queer, and the suitors -- as well as the love seekers --- are from different backgrounds and races.

Many in the queer community are desperately seeking representation in love and relationships in popular media and struggle to find that. In an interview with ABC News as reported by GMA , one of the cast members, Josielyn Aguilera, opened up about her hopes that the show would break the mold in how reality dating shows look moving forward. "I hope that this really breaks that glass ceiling, of letting other shows like this exist," she said. "I hope this really breaks that and we get to start seeing more like LGBT people fall in love and more people of color fall in love -- more people in general just fall in love."

An Inclusive and Diverse Show That Could Set a New Trend

Having a show that is so open to inclusivity and diversity for all can allow those cast members to shine and be themselves, which will make it easier to fall in love with themselves as well as with those they're courting in the hopes of a true connection. The show features an elimination each week in which the four women decide who stays and who goes. Each week, a new suitor is brought in to switch things up. Among the suitors, there are lesbians, bisexual men, bisexual women, and people of color to make sure that everyone has a shot at love and possibly even discovering something they weren't sure they liked.

Audiences get to see a diverse cast with sexual and racial representation that isn’t normally seen on a dating show, and it's refreshing, to say the least. This could be the start of more shows bridging the gap and showing that society has progressed to representation and acceptance, and it seems as if it has.

Netflix has announced The Ultimatum: Queer Love will debut on the streaming platform on May 24. The second season will feature five LGBTQ+ couples that are trying to figure out if their relationship is forever or for just a moment. Queer Love is the second installment of The Ultimatum reality dating show and is the first that is entirely LGBTQ+ focused. The premise of the show is that one half of the partnership is ready for marriage and to settle down, and the other isn't quite there yet.

Queer Love, as well as Love Trip: Paris, are exciting developments for the queer community as the representation is the entire basis of the show. There is a diligent effort made to include all letters of the LGBTQ+ alphabet family and opens the door for other shows to take point. While there have been other reality shows that will have one or two queer contestants, it always seems like an afterthought or a way to invoke drama. All in all, there's more space for LGBTQ+-friendly shows, and reality tv fans are excited to see more shows like Love Trip: Paris popping up.

Meet the Love Trip: Paris Quartet Trying to Find Love on TV's Most Progressive Dating Show

The drama isn't all because they're living together

93407049313130463381390783152n.jpg

Falling in love in Paris is the dream for virtually all romantics out there. It's sold to us on Hallmark cards, on saccharine journal covers, in movies, and in books. For the chosen four at the center of Freeform's new reality dating series, Love Trip: Paris , it became the reality.

Rose, Lacy, Caroline, and Josielyn moved into a chic apartment building in the summer of 2022 and spent the new few months dating a batch of French suitors of different races, sexual orientations, and gender identities. The twist? The suitors all lived in the same hotel. It's a truly modern love experiment.

"I do feel like there are real connections forming, especially if you have the opportunity to meet amazing people and allow yourself to be open to the experience," Josielyn told TV Guide during our trip to the set last fall. "Anything could happen."

All four of the Americans are new to reality TV but came in feeling very optimistic about being able to find love on a TV show, even if the idea was nervewracking at first. "You have to be so vulnerable," Lacy explained. "I have a mental health podcast so I'll be vulnerable all day, within my medium of control. But on a dating show that's you, that's your heart. People are so brave who do that."

love trip paris transgender

However, the inclusivity of the show's casting made each of the cast members feel good about putting themselves out there. "It's so open to LGBT and the queer community, which is just so exciting to be able to see that in a dating show," Josielyn elaborated. "Myself, being a part of the LGBT community, it just made me feel safe and happy to just date like everyone else and in a comfortable, safe spot."

"There has not been a show that is this inclusive in a dating format," Rose added. "It's really about love and finding that. [Watch] for representation, for the beautiful views of Paris, and there is a lot of drama as well."

There is the drama that comes from everyone trying to find love in the same dating pool (while living in that pool), but there is also an additional aspect to Love Trip: Paris that keeps the cast and their suitors on their toes. "We have a fun little app that tells us very interesting things to do," Caroline revealed to TV Guide with a disgruntled face, referencing the app that sends them on challenges or relays them messages, when they'd rather be chilling or don't want to hear what it has to say. "The app and the miscommunication are the drama, but the people are all fantastic. Everyone is beautiful, Paris is beautiful, and we are hilarious."

Caroline, Rose, Lacy, and Josielyn, Love Trip: Paris

Caroline, Rose, Lacy, and Josielyn, Love Trip: Paris

At the end of the day, Love Trip: Paris , like most Freeform programming, is about showcasing a realistic experience that will resonate with young adults. It seems that the show, even with dramatic inventions, is still trying to show what it's like to be a young person dating today, and none of the cast trying to find love shy away from that.

" Love Trip: Paris is filled with people with very caring hearts. We are very authentic humans," Lacy said. "The people have made the difference… The fact that all of us are just being ourselves, completely, always, it's very shame-free and that is a very attractive energy."

While none of the cast could, or would, reveal whether they find love at the end of the season, they were unanimous about what was the most important thing they are taking out of the show: each other.

"Dating is hard in and of itself, and having amazing girls that you can go to and talk about your struggles. How do you flirt? How do you talk to boys? How do you talk to girls? How do you bring up wanting to be married so soon?" Josielyn explained. "All of those crazy questions, it is just so nice to have girls that you can go to and ask for advice."

And Rose added, "Love comes in so many different formats and friendship is such an amazing view of that."

We can cheers to that.

Love Trip: Paris airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Freeform. Episodes are available the next day on Hulu.

The Ultimate LGBTQ Guide to Paris

I f all of Europe’s capital cities were siblings, Paris would be the gay one. It tends toward extravagance, keeps up with the latest fashion trends, and is a sucker for a good love story. So it’s no surprise that it’s attracted famous LGBTQ people for centuries — think Gertrude Stein, Oscar Wilde, and John Cocteau to name a few. The city has been a safe haven for bohemians and misfits for the better part of the past 150 years, even during trying times.

It remains a major hub for gay culture today and continues to draw LGBTQ travelers from around the globe. Socialites and party-goers can enjoy Paris’s dynamic nightlife, with queer events happening almost every night of the year. For those into cultural happenings, festivals, bookshops, and art installations, there is a wealth to choose from. However you define joie de vivre , the City of Lights has you covered.

LGBTQ history

Bars by neighborhood, parties, events, and festivals, naturism and outdoor activities.

La Belle Époque, or “the good times,” a period of several decades around the turn of the 19th century, is regarded as the era in which Paris earned its reputation. The beautifully renovated French capital, with its grand boulevards, opulent buildings, and formal gardens, reintroduced itself to the world. Along with the changing landscape of the city, social attitudes began to shift. LGBTQ artists and writers, like Stein and Wilde, came out without fear of societal rejection. They, and many other queer people, achieved prominent positions in artistic and intellectual circles while being openly gay.

The 1920s saw the first gay clubs and drag balls. Gender-bending was the zeitgeist: Women donned tuxedos, and men wore flamboyant frocks to raucous affairs in the neighborhoods of Les Halles and Montmartre. The bohemian spirit of prior decades set the stage for Paris to become one of the major centers for queer life in the world. But the Nazi invasion of 1940 and the establishment of Vichy France ushered in conservative legislation and major setbacks, forcing the LGBTQ community to withdraw underground.

The queer scene reemerged from the shadows in the early 1970s. Paris became a hotbed for gay liberation groups, similar to those forming in the US and Great Britain. Organizations with names like Homosexual Front for Revolutionary Action and Red Dykes pushed for LGBTQ recognition and an end to discrimination in France. This volatile time of organization and protest led the way to Paris’s first official pride march at the start of the following decade, in June 1981.

Twenty years later, the city elected its first openly gay mayor whose tenure was defined by contentious protests both for and against the marriage equality movement. But in 2013, same-sex marriage was finally legalized, inspiring hundreds of thousands of Parisians to flood the streets to celebrate. Despite achieving legal equality, LGBTQ people continue to face many unique challenges. It can be said, however, that Paris celebrates this community and honors its rich history now more than ever.

Once characterized by crumbling buildings and a general state of decay, Le Marais of today is almost unrecognizable. Trendy shops, high-end eateries, and rainbow flags galore blanket this gayborhood. Spread out across the third and fourth arrondissements, Le Marais is where you go for a classic night of bar hopping. You’ll meet tourists and locals alike indulging in cocktails and listening to pop beats at one of its many cosmopolitan bars.

Arguably the most famous gay bar in Paris, RAIDD is quintessential Marais. Its two floors are open daily, but weekends bring the crowds. RAIDD is usually the first stop for gay tourists. The atmosphere is spirited, and mingling between strangers is common. A night at RAIDD culminates with the famed “shower” when a burly go-go boy strips down in a glass room and takes a steamy shower as the whole bar stares in awe.

DJ Freddy pumps up the volume every night from the back room of this Marais staple. There’s nothing special about the ground level, but the descent to the cellar bar gives the feeling that you’re traveling back in time to a Medieval dungeon. Freedj doesn’t get crowded until later in the evening, but by midnight on a Friday or Saturday, it’s usually jam-packed. The drinks keep flowing until 3:00 AM, and the tight quarters make for a convenient ice-breaker.

Where: 35 Rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie Hours: daily from 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM

Café Voulez-Vous

For brunch, dinner, or simply a night of drinks and conversation, Café Voulez-Vous is the right choice. The setting is chic and cosmopolitan. Music is played at a reasonable volume, and groups of friends congregate around tables. Set up like a typical Parisian café, everyone is there to see and be seen, and mingling outside of cliques is rare.

Where: 18 Rue du Temple Hours: daily, hours vary

3W is a great place to start the evening or spend the whole night. This lesbian-centric karaoke bar draws a big after-work crowd from Wednesdays onward. The casual atmosphere and the cheap drinks — happy hour lasts until 9:00 PM — are perfect for a night of belting out your favorite tunes with the gal pals.

Cox is hard to miss: A big red awning wraps around its entire corner storefront, and there’s always a crowd of guys congregating on the terrace. Perfect for a weekday happy hour — this spot plays electronic and pop hits and serves discounted drinks. Unlike many of the other Marais bars, Cox has a strong local vibe.

Where: 15 Rue des Archives Hours: daily from 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM

Most visitors to Paris only associate Les Halles with shopping, but it’s also one of the city’s oldest gay districts. Occupying the first arrondissement, Les Halles is a bit more local and low-key than Le Marais. It’s not on the radar of many gay tourists, so it’s likely you may only encounter real Parisians at some of the bars in this area.

Bear Bar El Hombre

Bears can rejoice in this shaggy sanctuary. All are welcome, of course, but twinks and otters may not even catch a side glance from the guys cruising at this joint. The ground level has the atmosphere of a dive bar with kitschy plush stuffed bears adorning the walls. Head down to the basement on a weekend night, however, and you’ll encounter a bass-pumping club brimming with Paris’s furriest fellows.

Haughty Parisians call Le Labo a suburban bar, but this lounge-style venue is pretty glamorous in its own right. Locals from all over the Greater Paris area and beyond frequent it on weekends. At night, the bistro tables are pushed out of the way and the whole place transforms into a dance floor. Classics from Beyoncé to Britney, ABBA and the Spice Girls keep the party going until 6:00 AM.

Where: 37 Rue des Lombards Hours: daily, except Mondays

More than just a lesbian bar, La Mutinerie is a self-described feminist space for queer and trans women. Activist-minded visitors will fit right in here, as Mutinerie is equally a space for political action and community-building. It has a chill and divey atmosphere, with a billiard table, arcade games, and cheap drinks to boot. Its Feminist Library , open on Sundays, has a vast selection of books that speak to the lesbian, queer, and trans woman experience.

Home of the Moulin Rouge, this is Paris’s original red-light district. Today Pigalle is only a shadow of its licentious past, but still a must-visit for LGBTQ travelers. Take a stroll down Boulevard de Clichy and you’ll encounter sex shops and peep shows at almost every storefront. Sexodrome , a multi-level “love store” that claims to be the largest in the world, could be likened to a Walmart for kink. After you’ve satisfied your inner voyeur, walk toward Place de Pigalle to a tiki bar called Dirty Dick . This LGBTQ-friendly staple beckons visitors to bask in its campy Polynesian paradise all while sipping tropical rum cocktails out of phallic mugs.

Jeudi Barré

On Thursday evenings, Cookie Kunty, one of Paris’s rising comedy queens, puts on a GLAMazing spectacle at Le Yono . This gay-friendly haunt in Le Marais draws a rambunctious after-work crowd. Jeudi Barré is interactive and the whole audience joins in singing and dancing to the last number. The entrance fee is three euros (about $3,40) at the door.

Where: Le Yono, 37 Rue Vieille du Temple When: every Thursday at 10:00 PM

Bitch Party Paris

A monthly event hosted out of one of Paris’s mega-club venues, Bitch Party is très cher but worth the cost. Each month the party is dedicated to a different internationally renowned female artist. Whether it’s Rihanna, JLO, Britney, or Shakira, the artist’s style informs the music genre and vibe of the night. The venue, Gibus , is a massive concert-hall-turned-club, conveniently located in the 11th arrondissement, steps away from the République metro station. Doors open at midnight, and the club is packed with young, attractive circuit boys by 1:00 AM. The drink prices will burn a hole in your wallet, so the thrifty partygoer might want to pregame this one. An entrance ticket costs 15 euros ($16.70) online, and 17.50 euros ($19.50) at the door.

Rosa Bonheur

From outside Rosa Bonheur is an unassuming country cottage, but inside flamingo neon lights and head-mounted unicorns plaster the electric pink walls. Glittering disco balls dangle from the ceiling, and a stripper pole at the center of the bar invites daring partygoers to give it a spin. To avoid the queue, arrive at 5:00 PM, before the party, or stroll around the park while you wait. Buttes-Chaumont park looks like a pastoral scene of the French countryside, complete with a lake and waterfall, and is worth a visit in its own right.

Where: 2 Avenue de la Cascade When: every Sunday at 6:00 PM

Doctor Love

Doctor Love is not just a catchy name — the host, Mylène, is actually a medical doctor. This themed party takes place once per month at the impressive Club Haussmann , right off the grand boulevard of the same name. Mylène selects the theme and meticulously curates the space to match it. Whether it’s aliens, superheroes, or a masquerade, the club is transformed into an otherworldly place. Scene queens and circuit boys will not want to miss it. The entrance fee is 20 euros ($22.30) and includes one drink.

In April, the Paris LGBT Center and its partner organizations host a week of celebrating queer people. The events are varied — some are professional workshops that seek to improve queer lives, and others are just downright debaucherous parties. This year’s program includes a hackathon: a three-day workshop dedicated to teaching queer folks how to code, roundtable talks focusing on trans issues, a “tarot evening,” a day of mental health, dance parties, and much more. For a detailed program, consult the agenda located on the LGBT Center’s website closer to the time.

MecrediX and VendrediX are two weekly after-work gay parties that take place every Wednesday and Friday evening, respectively. The locations change each week, but both events almost always take place at a rooftop bar in central Paris. Check out their content on Facebook .

In June, Paris paints the town rainbow — literally. Two years ago crosswalks in Le Marais were repainted in multicolor to celebrate gay pride. Now permanent, these displays are a precursor to the flamboyant extravaganza that is Paris Pride.

Bois de Vincennes

From April to October, a section of Bois de Vincennes, a park just on the edge of the eastern city limits, is designated for naturists. Parisian gays flock to this site for nude picnics and day drinking on the weekends. If you’re feeling frisky, there’s an unofficial cruising spot in the forest nearby the naturist area. While still a big taboo in North America, naturism is more mainstream in Europe and is enjoyed by gays and straights alike. Prepare to encounter people of all different ages and body types basking in nude bliss. Please note, photography and film are forbidden inside the limits of the naturist space.

Tata Beach at the Seine

A former gay cruising spot on the river alongside the Jardin des Tuileries, Tata Beach fell out of use in the 1990s. However, it has remained an area where gay and queer people congregate, and it’s common to catch youngsters vogueing around here. Hang out with a bottle of wine and people watch for a while — rest assured, you’ll see something interesting.

Centre LGBT

The LGBT Center is a welcoming place that’s always buzzing with activity. Inside, it has the feel of a gay YMCA. Every day there’s an exhaustive list of events and activities. On Monday evenings, there are several 90-minute yoga classes held in the cellar studio for only six euros ($6.70). All are welcome to hang out in the living room-style entrance area and enjoy a discounted coffee or snack. The LGBT Center is involved in almost every official LGBTQ event in Paris, so it’s a great resource for staying in the know.

Les Mots à la Bouche

This LGBTQ bookshop has a high-quality selection in both French and English. All of the basics are covered, from gay canon classics to the hottest new LGBTQ novel of the summer. The prices are reasonable, and it’s not uncommon to see an eccentric elderly Marais gentleman with a sparkly cane and a feather in his cap browsing the aisles.

Saint-Eustache

Photo: Sodel Vladyslav /Shutterstock

Yes, there’s a church on Paris’s ultimate LGBTQ guide — but it’s not just any church. Saint-Eustache has been a mainstay for gay and lesbian Catholics in Paris for years. Although not documented, many claim that there was a support office housed within this building for the sick and dying during the AIDS crisis. Allegedly the staff at Saint-Eustache remain friendly and open toward LGBTQ parishioners, but, of course, this is not official or sanctioned by the Catholic hierarchy. As if a silent nod to the LGBTQ community, Saint-Eustache is home to a triptych by the famously vocal gay artist, Keith Haring. The triptych portrays the life of Christ but in Haring’s signature contemporary style. Located centrally in Les Halles, this peaceful sanctuary is worth a visit regardless of your religious beliefs.

Queer-inclusive reality dating show 'Love Trip: Paris' breaks TV barriers on Freeform

love trip paris transgender

"We're so used to seeing shows that are so whitewashed and heteronormative … but let's see the way the world has changed and has progressed," Hartselle, a pansexual woman -- which means she's open to being attracted to all gender identities -- told ABC News.

love trip paris transgender

You see us all, in all of our beautiful vulnerable glory."

love trip paris transgender

She said not having to worry about her safety allowed her to "let myself shine."

love trip paris transgender

"As a woman of color, dating people off of apps, you don't really know if it is a safe experience for you, and as for the other girls, all being queer, it's really scary dating in the real world in that way," Zilla-Ba said.

Reality TV has also been critiqued for failing to create space for people of marginalized groups to thrive. "Love Trip: Paris" executive producer Susan House said that this was one of the showrunners' main priorities.

"We want to help these girls, we want them to find love," House said in an interview. "But we also want them to have the most true experience possible. We wanted to give them room to express themselves, talk about things in interviews, talk to each other, like we wanted to just give them a safe space to really live these journeys."

love trip paris transgender

The 'Love Trip: Paris' cast dishes on what 'Emily in Paris' gets wrong about Parisians and what Americans can learn from the French about dating

  • On Freeform's "Love Trip: Paris," Francophiles search for love.
  • The cast shared what French people and Americans can learn from each other about dating.
  • They also revealed what "Emily In Paris" gets wrong about living in France.

Insider Today

Freeform's new dating series "Love Trip: Paris" takes viewers on a journey to Paris, where four Americans are searching for their life partners. Josielyn Aguilera, Lacy Hartselle, Caroline Renner, and Rose Zilla-Ba gave Insider all the tea on what it's like to date in France, including what French and American suitors can learn from each other and what Netflix's hit show "Emily In Paris" gets right and wrong about the city of love.

On "Love Trip: Paris," the four daters move into an apartment complex full of potential French love interests. The daters use an exclusive app to communicate with each other, and in each episode, the Americans decide which suitors have the key to their hearts—those who don't have to leave the residence.

As fast as potential love interests leave the complex, new ones come in, giving the show vibes distinctly similar to "Love Island" and "The Circle."

Since Josielyn, Rose, Caroline, and Lacy are Americans who've previously lived and dated in Paris, they also had thoughts on what Netflix's hit show "Emily In Pairs" gets right and wrong about French culture .

"There's a reason why maybe there are cliches, but they kind of go too overboard with it," Caroline said. "This is too much. You're beating a dead horse," they said, adding, "It gives me a headache just thinking about it."

Related stories

"I think the French are very particular about things, which is made very clear in 'Emily in Paris,'" they continued, noting that if you do something wrong, "they'll call you out on it." But Caroline said that in real life, French people are less "obnoxious" than the Netflix show depicts and will help you adapt to their way of doing things rather than icing you out.

Dating in Paris

Of course, many people watching "Love Trip: Paris" probably have a lot of questions about what it's like to date in France, and will quickly learn that it's not all champagne and eclairs. In fact, the cast had a lot of strong feelings about what French people could learn from American daters .

"You don't give your soul over just because you've kissed someone," Lacy said, adding that French people can be jealous while dating.

"Possessiveness is not hot. I get that intention is really important, connection. But you don't own another person," added Caroline.

The cast struggled with how intensely the French daters expressed their emotions, but it was clear that American daters had a lot to learn from the French, too.

American society, the cast agreed, is very rushed. But though they are intense, French people are very intentional with their time on dates.

"They will sit down with you, no cell phones, no distractions, and just be like, 'Let's talk. Let's get to know each other and let's create a memory," said Caroline.

"They will take you somewhere extravagant and memorable, everything is over the top just because that's the lifestyle that they want to live," Lacy said, recalling memories from the first time she lived in Paris. "They want to have a good moment and share it with someone they've never met. I'm like, 'Americans only do this if you've been together for a year, maybe."

The American and French daters on "Love Trip: Paris" have different gender identities and sexual orientations and the cast said that the most important message of the show is that no matter how you identify, everyone wants to fall in love.

"It's so amazing to see two amazing, beautiful women fall in love with each other and two amazing people get to meet each other for the first time and to get to experience that. I think that the more we see that on TV, film, the media, it's the more of a beautiful thing it'll be. Who knows, maybe that'll give a little kid out there the courage to be themselves," said Josielyn.

Episodes of "Love Trip: Paris" air Tuesdays from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Freeform.

Freeform’s Love Trip: Paris Is About to Be Your New Favorite Dating Show

Love Trip Paris cast four young women standing on a bridge in front of the Sacre Coeur

If you've ever been unlucky in love and dreamed of moving to Paris for a romantic adventure, you're not alone. And in new Freeform reality dating show Love Trip: Paris , you can live vicariously through four young Americans taking the City of Lights by storm — and snagging plenty of kisses while they're at it.

The reality show takes a fun approach to a typical dating show, creating a more fluid, diverse, and queer environment. It follows four lucky aspiring Parisians who move in together in a Paris penthouse to find it full of potential suitors. There's Caroline, a personal trainer from New York who “thinks there is a strong possibility that her woman could be in Paris"; Rose, a Boston realtor who is eager for a passionate Frenchman; Lacy, a mental health podcaster based in Nashville who learned French during the pandemic and is looking for romantic prospects of any gender in Paris; and Josielyn, a Los Angeles model who feels destined for Parisian love. (Plus, for the Las Culturistas fans — Matt Rogers is narrating.)

Four young women in paris standing in front of the eiffel tower

In the first trailer for Love Trip: Paris , which Teen Vogue is premiering exclusively, we meet the four young women as they prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. As montages of picnics and Parisian landmarks flash by, Josielyn admits she often falls for “the wrong kind of people,” while Rose is determined: she even brought her own engagement ring. Luckily, the house is stacked with beautiful floors — and beautiful people. “Seduction is a game,” one French suitor says. Some may be better at it than others; Rose says the French dates have a “jealous, possessive nature,” while Caroline has found the one queer person in the world who doesn't care about astrology. Rouge flag?

Tune into all the escapist drama and romantic trysts when Love Trip: Paris premieres on Freeform on Feb. 14. Check out the trailer below:
