14 Places to Visit in Mandalay + Things To Do

14 Places to Visit in Mandalay + Things To Do

Mandalay is the second largest city in Myanmar. It is known primarily for its Buddhism heritage. Among many temples, pagodas, and other traditional structures, the city plays host to the last royal palace of the last monarchy when Myanmar was still Burma. For that alone, people add Mandalay Fort to their itinerary to have the best experience of the country.

Another top attraction in the city is the Shwenandaw Monastery, a 19th Century structure first built as a royal apartment. Everything about the monastery is impressive; the carvings and sculptures on teak wood are exceptional. Like most destinations in Myanmar, Mandalay also boasts several pretty pagodas worth visiting. They include the KuThoDaw Pagoda and Sanda Muni Pagoda, located at the foot of the Mandalay Hill. If the pagodas are attractive enough, Mandalay Hill is drawing interest on its own, especially among pilgrims. It has been serving locals for over two centuries.

Mandalay is a fantastic side trip to add to your Myanmar itinerary. The city is a gateway for tourists who want to get to Myanmar’s best spots. Mandalay International Airport also serves direct flights to Singapore, India, China, and Thailand.

"The Cultural & Pilgrimage Centre of Myanmar"

Mandalay tourism.

Mandalay is a city located on the banks of the Irrawaddy(Ayeyarwady) River in Central Myanmar. It is the second-largest city in the country after Yangon. Most people expect an old Burma when it comes to Mandalay, but end up getting welcomed by sprawling buildings, wide roads filled with motorcycles and cars, pagodas with towering stupas, shopping complexes, tea houses and many lovely buzzing markets.

Spread around the foot of Mandalay Hill, Mandalay functioned as a royal capital of Ava kingdom for a few decades. The magnificent Royal Palace and Atumashi pagoda are some of the monuments of this period, which were reconstructed by the British. Mandalay is famous for trade, the centre of Burmese culture and Buddhist learning. The city is popular among tourists for life across the Irrawaddy, plenty of ancient Buddhist pagodas which speak of the rich Burmese culture revolving around Buddhism. The boat cruises from Mandalay to Bagan and Inle and are quite famous for the scenic journey which spans for multiple days on the river.

Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino

Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

  • Full Review
  • Huge family-friendly resort on southern end of the Strip in Las Vegas
  • 11-acre pool complex with lazy river, wave pool, and adults-only topless-optional pool
  • Elegant, spacious rooms have a bold design and flat-screen TVs
  • Large bathrooms have separate soaking tubs and showers
  • Tons of restaurants include celebrity chef-helmed fine-dining to 24-hour bistro
  • Bayside Buffet open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch
  • Shark aquarium with 12 types of sharks
  • Great bars, from Red Square to House of Blues to an ice bar
  • LIGHT Nightclub with resident DJs
  • Entertainment such as Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil show
  • 30,000-square-foot spa with extensive facilities and day passes
  • Three wedding chapels, plus wedding packages and planners offered
  • Long lines and slow service
  • Crowded pools
  • Fee to access fitness center
  • Daily resort fee (typical for Vegas)
  • Almost a mile to most Strip attractions

Bottom Line

The giant Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino offers a ton of features for kids (wave pool, streaming lazy river pool, shark reef aquarium) and adults (lively bars, world-class restaurants, a large spa), but the constant crowds, long lines, and occasional airport noise can make it a slightly less attractive upscale option. Additionally, it’s on the far southern end of the Strip, meaning many sights require a drive. All of the hotel's 3,209 rooms underwent renovations in 2015 and 2016, resulting in some of the most visually appealing accommodations in Vegas (which is saying a lot). The spacious rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. It’s worth comparing rates with the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino , which provides similar amenities, including a ton of excellent entertainment and a popular pool party.

Oyster Hotel Review

What are the design and scene like at the mandalay bay resort and casino, this massive hotel has an 11-acre pool complex and an on-site aquarium that attracts both families and partiers by the thousands..

mandalay tourist hotel

Even when you compare it to the other giant hotels in Vegas, the 3,209-room Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino is crowded, especially after you factor the 1,117 rooms at the connected  Delano Las Vegas  and yet another 424 rooms at the  Four Seasons  (both of which have shared access to the pools and the casino at Mandalay Bay). Given the hotel's Shark Reef Aquarium, wave pool, and broad assortment of nearly 30 restaurants – everything from a fine-dining steakhouse to all-day buffet – it rates with hotels like the  MGM Grand Hotel and Casino  as one of the best upscale  family hotels in Vegas . There's still plenty of beer chugging at the four pools and 10 bars, and the 1,800-seat House of Blues (which has its own tattoo parlor) draws twentysomethings every night.

Conventions are also a big chunk of the hotel's market (the Mandalay Bay's convention center is the fifth largest in the U.S., with more than two-million square feet of event and meeting space). The Mandalay Bay Resort's location on the southern edge of  the Strip  make it a bit more cut off from the attractions in the center of the Strip, such as the  Mirage , The Forum Shops at Caesars, and the  Bellagio .

On October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire on an outdoor music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay, killing 59 people and injuring more than 525. The event is the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

Where Is the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Located in Las Vegas?

It’s on the southernmost end of the strip, so close to the airport that guests can sometimes hear planes taking off, which makes it a bit cut off from the major vegas attractions..

The Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino complex, which also houses  Delano Las Vegas  and the  Four Seasons  hotels, is on the southernmost end of a three-and-a-half mile long stretch of hotel-casinos known as the Strip. Outside the complex, there isn't much in the immediate vicinity -- some vacant lots, rundown motels, and strip malls. To get closer to the central Strip attractions, travelers can take the free, 0.7-mile tram that connects Mandalay to the  Luxor  and  Excalibur , the two closest hotels to the north.

Most Las Vegas visitors want to explore all of the big properties along the Strip. Cabs are easy to find at virtually any time of day or night. A generally less expensive option is the Deuce, a double-decker bus that runs up and down the strip 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There's also a monorail system, which stops at MGM Grand,  Bally's / Paris ,  Flamingo / Caesars Palace ,  Harrah's / the LINQ , the Las Vegas Convention Center, the  Westgate , and the  SLS  -- but it's a long walk to the  MGM Grand  stop from Mandalay Bay. If you're traveling along the Strip with at least one other person, a cab is often the least expensive option. Ride-shared services such as Uber and Lyft also operate in Las Vegas.

Virtually every hotel on the Las Vegas Strip is a 10- to 15-minute cab ride from McCarran International Airport.

What Are Rooms Like at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino?

Swank rooms have tons of visual appeal after a 2015-16 renovation, as well as showers, separate bathtubs, and flat-screen tvs..

mandalay tourist hotel

All of the guest rooms and suites at the Mandalay were renovated in 2015-16 with a bold and contemporary aesthetic that's full of texture and contrasts. Expect nature-inspired murals, wood-paneled accent walls, bright body pillows, and plush carpets with subtle wood-grain or ikat patterning. Midcentury modern furniture includes sleek consoles and writing desks with Eames-esque chairs. All rooms have well-stocked minibars, 42-inch plasma flat-screen TVs, and pillow-top mattresses. In-room coffee requires a fee, while Wi-Fi is covered by the daily resort fee.

Bathrooms have wide stone countertops with two sinks and separate soaking tubs and marble walk-in showers. Toiletries are provided. Rooms start at a spacious 550 square feet, while suites are larger and add perks such as living spaces, dining tables, and extra bedrooms.

Views of the Strip or the mountains are available from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

What Are Pools Like at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino?

The huge mandalay bay pool complex has a lazy river, wave pool, and adults-only topless-optional pool..

mandalay tourist hotel

Mandalay Bay Beach, the enormous pool complex with an open-air bar and a small casino, is pretty incredible. But even with four pools across 11 acres, the place still manages to get crowded. The largest pool, and clearly the kid favorite, is the 1.6-million-gallon wave pool, which produces waist-high (on an adult) waves every few minutes -- and is the Strip's only wave pool. The waves aren't especially dangerous (they're just barely large enough for a kid to body surf), but the hotel keeps lifeguards posted and all children much be at least 48 inches tall to go in the pool. Less intense, but still fun, is the lazy river pool, where kids and adults can float in inner tubes down the winding stream and through waterfalls. A lazy river pool can also be found at the  MGM Grand Hotel and Casino . Once kids have had their fill of frolicking in the wave pool or floating down the lazy river, they can try to spot the 100-odd species -- including a dozen different kinds of sharks -- in the 1.6-million-gallon Shark Reef Aquarium.

A rowdy pool party (and topless sunbathing) can be found at the 21-and-up-only Moorea Beach Club pool, which requires a cover charge to enter. But the party here doesn't quite have the same appeal as the infamous Vegas pool parties, such as Wet Republic at the MGM Grand.

What Restaurants and Bars Are at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino?

Over two dozen restaurants consist of fine-dining steak and french eateries, an all-day buffet, and fast-food options..

The over-30 Mandalay Bay Restaurants are spread across the hotel complex, which includes the  Delano Las Vegas  and the  Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas . It has more than most hotels on the Strip – spanning price points, styles, and cuisines. The Mandalay rivals even the best Vegas foodie-hotels with its broad range of fine-dining options from acclaimed chefs, including Charlie Palmer's Aureole, Michael Mina's STRIPSTEAK, Hubert Keller's Fleur, and Wolfgang Puck's Lupo.

Bayside Buffet serves a large international buffet spread for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus brunch on weekends. Casual options include Starbucks, Slive of Vegas pizza joint, Burger Bar, and Hussong’s Cantina for Mexican fare. A food court provides fast-food fare.

In-room dining is also available.

What Features Are Available at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino?

Extensive features include a large spa and fitness center, an average casino, multiple bars, and various nightlife options such as big-name entertainment..

The Mandalay Bay Las Vegas complex is home to some of the best bars on the Strip, including the House of Blues Foundation Room, which is a Vegas favorite thanks to its amazing views and private "tea rooms" that feel far more intimate than the mega-clubs and lounges everywhere else. Minus5° Ice Bar, Skyfall Lounge, and a casino bar provide more options for cocktails. The 38,000-square-foot LIGHT Nightclub has a nightly DJ lineup. The Mandalay Bay Events Center hosts big-name acts, and a current show is the Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil.

The 30,000-square-foot Spa Mandalay has warm and hot whirlpools, a cedar sauna, a eucalyptus-scented steam room, a cold plunge, and 23 treatment rooms. The fitness center includes a good selection of cardio equipment with private TV monitors, free weights, exercise balls, and strength-training machines. The daily resort fee covers access to a cardio room.  Also covered by the resort fee is property-wide Wi-Fi, unlimited local and toll-free calls, and airline boarding pass printing. There’s a daily fee for self- and valet parking.

Like everything else at Mandalay Bay, the casino is big (about 135,000 square feet), but it doesn't feel as exciting or interesting as the casinos at other luxury hotels, like the Wynn,  Bellagio , Venetian, or  Caesars Palace . The casino includes the standard offering of slots, table games, blackjack, poker, race and sports book, along with the high-limit room, but the design and atmosphere is about on par with any other giant hotel in Vegas.

18 things to know before staying at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas

Kristy Tolley

At the south end of the Las Vegas Strip sits the 43-story Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, a wonderland for all types of travelers — singles, couples and even families .

Its upscale rooms, extensive amenities, and on-site dining and entertainment venues make it an ideal option for your next visit to Sin City.

Whether you're booking your first stay or are a Mandalay Bay regular, there are a few things you may not already know about this popular Las Vegas resort. Here are 18 of them.

mandalay tourist hotel

Mandalay Bay is a massive resort

With 3,209 rooms, Mandalay Bay is a very large property. Beyond the main Mandalay Bay accommodations, there are an additional 424 rooms at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas and 1,117 suites at the Delano Las Vegas, both of which sit within Mandalay Bay towers. That brings the complex's total room count to 4,750 accommodations, putting it just behind the largest resort on the Strip — the MGM Grand Las Vegas .

Prices for standard rooms in the offseason start at about $59 per night (excluding a daily resort fee) but can cost several hundred dollars per night on busier dates.

Its pre-construction history is pretty cool

mandalay tourist hotel

While Mandalay Bay opened in 1999, it was built on the site of the former Hacienda Hotel and Casino, which started welcoming guests back in 1956.

The Hacienda was the second property in the Spanish-themed motel chain and boasted the Strip's most glorious pool at the time. The hotel even had its own fleet of charter planes that brought gamblers in from all over the country.

After owner Warren Bayley's death in 1964, his wife Judy took over the business, becoming Las Vegas' only female casino owner at the time. She commissioned the iconic neon sign Caballero on Palomino, which became part of the Neon Museum Las Vegas in the early 1980s. In 1996, the same year the Hacienda shut its doors, the sign was restored and later moved to its current home at the intersection of Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard.

The property is affiliated with MGM Resorts

Circus Circus Enterprises purchased the former Hacienda Hotel, along with 74 acres of land next door, in 1995. Not long after, it became part of the Mandalay Resorts Group, eventually merging with MGM Mirage to form MGM Resorts International in 2010.

The MGM Resorts brand comprises 29 distinct hotel and destination gaming offerings in the U.S. and Macau. Its portfolio includes some of the most iconic properties in the resort industry, such as the MGM Grand, Bellagio Resort & Casino , Aria Resort & Casino and Park MGM Las Vegas.

Mandalay Bay's opening in 1999 was quite the event. A parade of motorcycles led by grand marshals "The Blues Brothers" — actors Dan Akroyd, Jim Belushi (brother to the original Blues Brother, the late John Belushi) and John Goodman (who had just been featured in the 1998 sequel "Blues Brothers 2000") — drove through the resort's front door.

Since the property is part of the MGM Resorts family, you can use points to book a stay here. Award rates range between 17,000 and 23,000 World of Hyatt points per night, depending on the dates of your visit.

A newly launched MGM Rewards program lets World of Hyatt members earn twice as many World of Hyatt points on their stays. They can also tier-match with MGM Rewards and take advantage of show discounts, guaranteed room rates and other exclusive perks.

If you have the MGM Rewards Mastercard, you get automatic Pearl status (the basic tier), which gives you free self-parking at MGM Resorts. That saves you $18 per day.

It was named after a poem

mandalay tourist hotel

Originally, the hotel was to be called Project Paradise. However, it was later renamed after Rudyard Kipling's 1890 poem "Mandalay." The poem romanticizes life in colonial Burma (now Myanmar) — a place that, interestingly, Kipling had never visited.

The poem later inspired a movie, a luxury cruise ship and a Frank Sinatra song.

The Mandalay Bay pool scene is epic

Mandalay Bay's sprawling 11-acre pool facility is touted as one of the best pool complexes in Las Vegas — for good reason.

It's composed of four different pool areas, including Mandalay Bay Beach, which is filled with 2,700 tons of real sand.

mandalay tourist hotel

You also can cool off in the exclusive adults-only Moorea Beach Club, which is located on the second level of the beach tower. Its frosted glass panels separate it from the other areas, creating the privacy needed for its top-optional policy.

If you'e looking for a bit more activity, you can play in up to 6-foot-high waves in the massive 1.6-million-gallon wave pool (the height requirement for the wave pool is 48 inches). Or, you can grab an inner tube — either use one you brought or rent one on-site — and drift down the lazy river, one of only three in the city.

Other pool area lures include the Daylight Beach Club venue that features the main pool, two private pools for cabana guests, refreshing cocktails and a variety of events and entertainment. Cabana rentals start at $275 and come with a stocked fridge, a personal safe, butler service and other perks.

There's a designated ride-hailing area

When it comes time to explore more of Vegas, find the ride-hailing area by walking left past the front desk to the Convention Center Entrance to the rideshare lobby. You can schedule your ride through your preferred ride-hailing app and then wait in air-conditioned comfort until you see your driver pull up.

You can see the 'King of Pop' here

A Cirque du Soleil production, Michael Jackson ONE, is at Mandalay Bay. The show is a mix of acrobatics, dance performances and visual effects that pull you into the King of Pop's biggest hits like "Thriller" and "Beat It," among others.

You'll want to arrive 30 minutes early to enjoy the Cirque-style pre-show entertainment.

Ticket prices start at $69 per person. Note, though, that these rates don't include taxes, fees or the additional live entertainment tax of 9% added to all live productions in Nevada , so budget a bit more than $69 to cover everything. Also keep in mind that kids 4 and younger are not permitted, while guests between 5 and 17 years old must see the show with an adult.

It's a dog-friendly resort

Mandalay Bay allows up to two (fully housetrained) dogs in each accommodation, as long as the dogs' combined weight is less than 100 pounds. The add-on cost is $100 per night per standard room (plus taxes) and $150 per night for suites.

Note that only service dogs are permitted in public areas like the food and beverage spaces or the spa and pool areas (except for passing through).

mandalay tourist hotel

There's a designated dog park available on the resort grounds. Plus, you can arrange doggie butler services or dog walking through the concierge staff. If you're in a meeting or out for a quick bite, you can request that staff check on your pup and text you an update. The cost for butler services is $25 for 10 minutes. Staff can also schedule dog walking through a vetted local service.

Order a Buddy's Box ($29.99) before your arrival and your pup will be greeted with three treats, two toys and a new bandana to sport during its Vegas vacay.

You'll find a convenient tram system

A resort-connecting monorail was installed when Mandalay Bay, Luxor Resort & Casino and Excalibur Hotel & Casino were constructed. It's a quick and convenient way to get around and is a lifesaver during hotter times of the year. It's also free.

One track carries passengers directly from Excalibur to Mandalay Bay. The other (longer) track makes stops at all three stations.

Trams run about every five minutes, so wait times are minimal.

Note that this free tram is different from the Las Vegas Monorail , which includes seven stops along the Las Vegas Strip.

You can walk to the Luxor without leaving the building

While Mandalay Bay is located pretty far south on the Strip, you can get from there to the Luxor without going outside, as the two properties are connected by an enclosed walkway. It's an easy five-minute walk from Mandalay's main casino to the Luxor's front entrance.

You can also use the previously mentioned tram system if you'd rather catch a ride.

There's a tattoo parlor

mandalay tourist hotel

If you never want to forget your trip to Vegas, you can get a tattoo at Mandalay Bay.

Starlight Tattoo is touted as one of the best spots to get inked on the Strip. It's owned by globally known celebrity tattoo artist Mario Barth. Notable Starlight Tattoo clients include Ice Cube, Deadmau5, Criss Angel and Usher.

In addition to its impressive list of clientele, another cool stand-out feature of Starlight is that it uses vegan-friendly ink from Intenze Products, a company founded by Barth.

Resort fees apply, but you can avoid them

Resort fees can rack up if you travel a lot. Most Las Vegas resorts attach them to room rates, and Mandalay Bay is no exception. Daily resort fees here currently cost $39 plus tax (13.35%), which can be a pain point in a multiday stay.

The good news is you might be able to avoid paying them . If you have elite status in the MGM Rewards loyalty program (which you can match from Hyatt), you can get them waived .

It's home to a shark aquarium

Built to give the impression of being in an ancient temple that sank to the ocean floor, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is a cool diversion for both hotel guests and visitors. The aquarium teems with 15 species of sharks, piranhas, stingrays, endangered green sea turtles and other captivating marine life. Its underwater tunnel is especially mesmerizing.

Basic tickets cost $29 for adults, $27 for seniors 65 and older, and $24 for kids between 5 and 12; admission is free for children ages 4 and younger. Entry includes an undersea virtual reality experience. Interactive programming like marine animal feeding is also available for an additional cost.

An ice bar is available for cooling off

Just inside The Shoppes at Mandalay Place and above the escalators is the Minus5 Ice Lounge. Everything, including couches, the bar, walls and architectural details, is made of more than 90 tons of ice; the inside temperature is set to a cool -5 degrees Celsius (hence, the name) or 23 degrees Fahrenheit.

mandalay tourist hotel

A basic visit package starts at $24 and includes admission, gloves and a cozy parka to use during your time in the bar. A $49 ticket gets you adds two cocktails (or mocktails for nondrinkers) served in ice glasses (what else?).

Kids ages 7 to 16 can visit before 9 p.m. but must have an adult with them. The basic package for that age group is $13 and comes with gloves and a parka. The Kids V-ICE-P Experience ($29) also includes a souvenir and one mocktail.

You can feed your soul at House of Blues

When Mandalay Bay opened to much fanfare in 1999, The Blues Brothers not only led the parade but were part of the House of Blues Restaurant & Bar's impressive list of iconic first performances. Bob Dylan and Bono also rocked the house when the venue launched.

On the main level, House of Blues serves up a cool, folk-art atmosphere and delectable Southern soul food like shrimp and grits, jambalaya, barbecue baked beans, house-made slaw and jalapeno cornbread. There's also a gift shop.

The music hall is located on the lower level. Currently, Santana is the House of Blues' resident headliner.

House of Blues offers daily live music as well as a packed calendar of special performances — and it's more than blues music. Entertainment here covers a variety of musical genres, including gospel brunch blues, reggaeton, indie rock and heavy metal.

Other big names who've taken the stage here over the years include Guns N' Roses, The Killers, Aretha Franklin, Eminem, Destiny's Child, B.B. King, Beach House and Dolly Parton.

A bevy of room options is available

From standard 550-square-foot rooms to expansive luxury suites measuring more than 2,000 square feet, there's a wide variety of accommodation options within the Mandalay Bay complex.

Mandalay Bay comprises most of the main Y-shaped tower, with the AAA Five Diamond-rated Four Seasons occupying the 35th to 39th floors.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in Mandalay Bay's king and two-queen rooms provide nice views of either Mandalay Bay Beach or the Las Vegas Strip.

For those keen on maintaining a more holistic and healthy lifestyle, book one of Mandalay Bay's Stay Well rooms; accommodations come equipped with wellness amenities like air purification, non-toxic cleaning protocols and a shower infuser that reduces chlorine. These rooms also come with free access to Cleveland Clinic's online programs for stress, sleep and nutrition.

There are 424 guest rooms within the Four Seasons section, which offers amenities like a hotel-exclusive pool (open seasonally), a spa, a health club and other exclusive perks. Four Seasons guests also have access to the restaurants, pools and other amenities across the entire Mandalay Bay property.

Guest rooms often start at $720 per night (for a stadium-view room). The Presidential Suite with a view of the Strip goes for $2,915 per night.

In a separate tower, Delano Las Vegas also forms part of the larger Mandalay Bay property. It's an all-suite, boutique-style hotel — 1,117 suites, in fact — with rooms measuring at least 725 square feet. The most spacious option is the 4,500-square-foot Delano Loft. A handful of Delano suites also offer the Stay Well treatment.

Honest Review of Staying at Mandalay Bay

We went to Las Vegas with the main purpose of exploring and hiking Death Valley and Valley of Fire parks. Buuuuut we still like the nightlife crowd, a good drink, and a comfy bed to sleep in. For these reasons, we thought it would be fun to stay on the strip. This way, we could adventure during the day, and partayy at night (okay, party is a strong word). With a bit of research, we settled on staying at Mandalay Bay. Of course, there are many choices for hotels on the strip, so I did want to share my honest review of the stay and answer some frequently asked questions.

Where do you park?

The Mandalay has a large connected parking garage that you can park in for 18 dollars a night. You can use your room key to get in and out of the garage at any time. You can also use your key to park at any of the other MGM properties (which is nice if you want to explore more of the strip without walking the entire strip).

How was checking in?

mandalay bay check in lobby

I’ve heard horror stories of checking in at hotels on the strip (waiting for hours, no rooms available, etc). But, checking in at the Mandalay was extremely simple. They even have an app where you can check in virtually and get your room key right on your phone.

I’m slightly old-fashioned and checked in at the desk, but every time we walked by the lobby there were only one or two people in line.

Were the rooms clean?

We were pleasantly surprised when we entered the room. My husband has stayed at other hotels on the strip and has complained about a lingering smoke smell in each and every room. The rooms at the Mandalay were clean and spacious.

What amenities are included?

Whats included at mandalay bay

Not much is included, but that’s Vegas for ya. You are charged a daily resort fee (39 per night) to pay for the use of the pool and wifi and public use areas.

There’s a fridge and mini-bar in the room but beware of opening it, because they will charge you for simply using the fridge (sensor-operated). There are also snacks and water bottles in the room that you will be charged for if you touch them (they don’t mess around).

Are there suites available at Mandalay Bay?

Yep! We stayed in a basic room which was…well…basic. Our room had your typical two doubles, TV, and bathroom. Nothing extra, but it was everything we needed.

If you are a bit more bougie, you can upgrade to a suite that range from 600 to almost 6,000 square feet!!! A 6,000-square-foot hotel suite, will likely be something I never experience, BUT if you do…let me know how it goes 🙂

Can I bring my dog?

We, unfortunately, left Thor at home for this trip, but Mandalay Bay DOES HAVE DOG-FRIENDLY ROOMS! But, they come at a hefty price. You can bring up to 2 dogs (no more than 100 pounds combined) with you for an additional 100 dollars per night. They cannot be left alone in the rooms (unless in a kennel) and are not allowed in any of the public areas.

The Mandalay even offers doggy butler services such as check-ins (while you are out), dog-walking services, and treats for additional charges.

What restaurants are on-site?

restaurants at the mandalay bay

So. many. restaurants. It’s actually crazy how much can be going on inside a hotel. There are 19 different sit-down restaurants, a food court, and a beachside grill.

We only ate at Ri Ra Irish Pub, but it was the best salmon I have ever had. So so good!

If looking for a quick bite to eat (and save a bit of money), you can head to the Food Court and grab Subway, pizza or something from Johnny Rockets. Other “affordable” choices are the Noodle Shop, Burger Bar, Hussong’s Catina, Citizens, or BBQ Mexicana.

If you want a fancy night, head to Kumi for Japanese, Lupo for Italian, or Fleur for steak.

Is there anything to do inside the hotel?

Besides eating and drinking at the above restaurants, you can of course gamble at the large casino. If gambling isn’t your thing. There are also nightly shows and the Shark Reef Aquarium where you can feed the sharks and stingrays and walk through the underwater tunnel. Tickets for these activities are extra and can be purchased via the app or at the front desk.

Was it safe?

Vegas is busy and attracts all sorts of different individuals. With this being said, we did feel safe inside the hotel and walking the strip. You of course always have to be aware of your surroundings and make sure you are making common sense decisions (ex: do not get too drunk on the strip and walk home alone at 2 am).

What additional costs were associated with the stay?

In addition to the room fee, you should also expect to pay a 39 dollar per night resort fee, resort fee tax (about 5 dollars per night), and 18 dollars per night in overnight parking fee (if bringing a car). There are snacks and drinks in the room, but they will of course cost you.

How do you get to the other end of the strip?

las vegas strip at night

Initially, we walked the entire strip the first night. But its important to note that Mandalay Bay is at the very end of the strip and therefore is about a 3-mile walk to the other end. If you are wanting to get to a restaurant or show that is at the other end of the strip, you have several options. You can of course walk if you have the extra time or grab an uber if you don’t mind spending a bit of money. You could also find another MGM property and use your room key to park there.

OR you can ride the FREE mono-rail to different hotels. This is what we ended up using on the way back and it ended up being very easy and convenient. The monorail connects Mandalay Bay to Luxor and Excalibur and then you can walk to the Park MGM and ride another Tram to the Bellagio. If you want to go further down the strip you can then get on the monorail from the Mirage to Treasure Island.

The Trams run 7 days a week from 10am-midnight (except for the last leg Mirage-TI which only runs from noon-9 pm on weekdays and noon- 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays). They arrive every 5 minutes or so and we found them to be easy and clean to ride.

Is it worth staying on the Las Vegas Strip?

Yes!! We have stayed off of the strip before and did not feel as safe in those hotels. It’s nice to have SO many restaurant and activity choices at the tip of your fingers.

Would I stay at the Mandalay Bay Hotel again?

mandalay bay hotel

Yep! Although the rooms were very basic and everything cost extra (looking at you mini fridge), we had zero complaints with the Mandalay. It was clean and well-organized and close to everything you could need.
