Situated in the Easternmost part of Indochina peninsula, Vietnam is a country that evokes highly visual memories: rows of street vendors wearing conical hats (nón lá), water buffalos plodding across rice fields and colourful floating markets on the Mekong river.

Mekong aerial view

Where Is The Mekong River?

Do i need a visa to travel to the mekong river.

The Mekong River traverses multiple countries, so your visa requirements will depend on the cruise you want to take and your point of entry into the countries you will visit.

If you are taking a cruise from Vietnam to Cambodia, you will only need to acquire a Vietnam visa on arrival – your Cambodian visa will be stamped in your passport during the cruise.

However, if you are taking the downstream cruise and entering Vietnam on the river from Cambodia, most likely you will need to get your Vietnam visa before your cruise,  while the Cambodian visa can be easily acquired on arrival at the airport.

If you are cruising the Upper Mekong, you can get the Laos visa upon arrival at the airport or at the Thai border crossing, if your cruise starts in Huay Xai.

Do I Need To Get Any Vaccinations Or Malaria Tablets Ahead Of Travel?

Some travelers start taking malaria tablets before traveling to the Mekong River, but it is not a requirement. Your doctor may recommend that you get vaccinated for hepatitis A and B, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, and yellow fever. You may also want to take precautions to protect yourself against mosquito bites.

What Is One Thing I Shouldn’t Miss Near The Mekong River?

There are countless sites and attractions along the Mekong River , one of the reasons it is such a popular spot for river cruises. On the Lower Mekong, the floating markets in the Delta  are a must-see. In the Upper Mekong, make sure to visit the Pak Ou Caves near Luang Prabang.

What Is The Local Cuisine Like?

Traveling along the Mekong River gives you the chance to try all different kinds of local cuisines. Southeast Asian countries are famous for their noodles and rice in many variations, and – along the Mekong – the local fish.

Dishes aren’t spicy and there are many vegetarian options. You can expect freshly made dishes using local vegetables, herbs, and soy or fish sauce to accompany them.

Mekong food specialities to try include the elephant ear fish and local rice pancakes popular in the Mekong Delta, in Cambodia its Khmer cuisine, and in Laos the lard and sticky rice.

Is The Mekong River Safe?

The Mekong River is a safe location. The only thing of which to be aware is that parts of it may be polluted. However, this should not be an issue if you are on a Mekong cruise. Practice good water safety and common sense and there is no reason you shouldn’t have a safe trip.

When Is The Best Time Of Year To Go To The Mekong River?

The most pleasant time of year for a Mekong River trip is between November and February. During these months, the weather is cooler and drier (especially in the evening) with no rainfall.

Although, if you are interested in entering Tonlé Sap Lake by riverboat, you should aim for the end of the rainy season (August – mid November) when the water in the river is naturally higher making the lake accessible.

Is The Mekong River a Good Family Destination?

Taking a Mekong River cruise with kids is possible but most Mekong boats don’t allow kids younger than 7 years old on board. The Mekong Delta is an exciting destination for the whole family , with activities such as cycling, agricultural and cultural experiences, school visits, and ancient temple exploration.

Is The Mekong River a Good Honeymoon Destination?

The Mekong River can be a great honeymoon destination depending on your tastes, especially around its delta . With breathtaking sights, unique cultural experiences, romantic accommodations aboard luxurious riverboats, and serene riverine vistas, the Mekong is ideal for newlyweds who want a remote and adventurous honeymoon.

Mekong River Cruise Season

The Mekong River’s flow is seasonal, with the water levels reaching astonishing lows and incredible highs.

  • April to May: Low water level season
  • May to June: Monsoon season
  • August to September: High water level season
  • September to March: Typical river cruise season

From April to May, the river levels are typically at their lowest, making boat travel improbable along the majority of the river.

May to June is usually the monsoon season with strong winds and heavy rains.

This results in the river reaching its highest levels from August to September, which means fast-moving currents and water levels often breach the river banks.

Due to the seasonal changes in the river’s water levels, most river cruises are nonoperational from April to the end of September, except Aqua Expeditions which operates in a section of the river with regular water flow all year round.

The typical Mekong River Cruise season is from September to March when most of the river is accessible, and currents are safer.

What to Expect on a Mekong River Cruise

Mekong river cruise food.

The cuisine offered on the Mekong river cruises is no less than exceptional. If you have any dietary restrictions, be sure to explain this before your trip to make your food experience as smooth sailing as possible.

The cuisine offered on each cruise will reflect the region you are exploring as well as the typical dishes of the west.

You can expect lots of seafood and fresh river delights.

The best river cruise lines will source most of their produce locally and design their menus based upon your geographic journey to take you on an authentic tour of the region through food.

Scenery as you Cruise on the Mekong River

The scenery you will experience from your cabin window or the deck will be some of the most naturally stunning landscapes that you could possibly see.

Unlike European and other Asian rivers, urban cities along the Mekong are few and far between.

This is due to the low-water river season, where the river runs nearly dry, and the incredibly high-water season, where the river fills to its brim.

Lotus field in the area of the Mekong River.

This makes the river banks and surrounding areas rather unsuitable for urban development.

With a lack of widespread urban development, your cruise along the river guarantees you unaltered and unparalleled views of the Mekong basin's natural beauty, which is stunning!

Besides your ports of call, there are signs of scattered local life throughout, some so unique you’ll wonder if you’ve traveled into the past.

People along the Mekong, especially in Cambodia, literally live in and on the Mekong without any modern amenities.

You’ll pass their wooden villages built on stilts designed to survive the flood season. Here, the locals fish directly from their homes and raise their families and even livestock.

Also, you will see temples and statues of Buddhas and other monuments along the Mekong River.

The Mekong is also home to fish such as the freshwater stingray and the giant catfish.

The largest of these species have been caught in the Mekong River's Thailand and Cambodian sections. If you’re lucky, you may see some!

Highlights of a Mekong River Cruise: Bays, Ports, and Areas

River cruises on the Mekong mostly sail between Cambodia and Vietnam. However, you will find some outliers, like the Mekong Kingdoms mentioned above, that sail between Thailand and Laos.

Each port of embarkment or disembarkment offers unique, sometimes once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

You should consider tacking on a couple of extra days at your cruise's start and end! Here are a few that shouldn’t be missed.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Siem Reap is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site called Angkor Wat.

It is a sprawling ancient metropolis of temples and ruins that shouldn't be missed. You should consider tacking on a couple of extra days either at the beginning or end of your trip to explore these ancient ruins.

You can also take a short trip to The Cambodian Landmine Museum or enjoy one of the night markets in town.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Visiting Phnom Penh can be a sobering experience. Here, you can experience the historical genocide of the 1970s by visiting the Tuol Sleng Museum (S-21 prison) and the Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre (The Killing Fields).

Neither is for the faint of heart but is a meaningful cultural experience.

For something much more light-hearted, you could visit the Royal Palace .

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

You don’t want to miss visiting the famous Cu Chi Tunnels . These are a series of underground tunnels the Vietnamese used in the Vietnam war to defeat the American invaders.

Easily one of the best war museums, possibly in the world, is the War Remnants Museum . It shows the honest, stark reality and atrocities of war.

For some cultural entertainment, check out a puppet theater show. They are available all over the city and highlight the culture of Vietnam and its history.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Ha Long Bay is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you aren’t tired of being on a boat, this one-of-a-kind journey will take you through some of the Earth’s most magnificent physical features.

You’ll travel one or two nights on a traditional junk boat, sing karaoke at night, and jump into the jade-colored waters.

You’ll kayak through caves and hike through the largest cave in Vietnam.

Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is located in Laos, Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), and China.

The best place to experience it is from Chiang Saen, Thailand, where you can visit the Hall of Opium Museum and stand at a viewpoint where you can see the point where Laos, Thailand, and Burma meet.

Tourist Visas and Passport Information for a Mekong River Cruise

You always need to travel with your passport for an international river cruise. A good rule of thumb is that it should be valid for at least six months after your trip.

If you're sailing on the Mekong River, you also likely need tourist visas. Without getting too much into the weeds about what countries you'll need visas for and how to obtain them for your Mekong River Cruise, we'll say that if you book a cruise, check with the cruise line about the requirements.

Associated visa costs vary per country. Expect to pay around $30 to $45 per person for a visitor visa.

About the Mekong River

Mekong water and topography.

The Mekong begins as a trickle of water up high on the Tibetan plateau.

From here, the water carves its way through steep rocky terrain where the river is only approximately 1-meter wide. As the river continues to travel, its steepness declines, and it widens out to cover areas up to 1 kilometer wide!

The waters of the river are typically brown in color, with some places where it runs a bit clearer than others.

Depending on which part of the Mekong you’re cruising on, you’ll experience natural landscapes where the river is wide, the forests line the river, and in some spots, you’ll be traversing through mountainous or hilly forested areas.

You’ll experience incredible sunsets and sunrises that will reflect in impossible ways off the Mekong waters.

Mekong Downstream Cambodia Vietnam on Mekong Navigator

Staff excellent. Cabin lovely but situated back of boat and engine noise so loud prevented sleep. Other passengers were warned if this and given a reduced rate. Food and service excellent. Mooring at Phnom Penh for three nights with no view but underside of dock made balcony unusable for almost half of cruise. €1000 refund from Lotus accepted. Tourradar attempt to claim 20% of that disgraceful.

Luxury Mekong and Temple Discovery Cruise - 7 or 9 night cruise

From a value perspective, overall it was about average. Also, sine I booked a premium cabin on the Scenic Spirit, I was expecting all ground transport to be of equal quality. One of the buses options used a few times was quite old and run-down.

Mekong river cruise review

"Outstanding Service"

Could not have been more pleased with the outstanding service offered by Hong Nham with Inside Travel . We booked a Mekong river Cruise on the Jahan Cruise with Heritage Line and Hong was efficient, timely, courteous, and exceptionally competent. All of our questions with regards to timings and visas came, sometimes without even being asked. What an absolute pleasure to deal with someone so knowledgable and capable. Pricing was also the best compared with other agencies. Highly and strongly recommend for all travels within southeast Asia. Ms. Jane Adams-Roy & Family - CANADA

"The best trip we've ever taken - absolutely incredible"

Thank you, Ms. Hanh Do. The Mekong river Cruise we booked with InsideTravel was probably the best trip we've ever taken. The Mekong and Tonle River cruise was absolutely incredible and the people of Vietnam and Cambodia are still in our minds, a couple weeks after returning home. We will definitely be recommending the trip, and InsideTravel, to our friends and colleagues. We have produced a video which summarizes our trip and have been distributing the link to our friends, family, and colleagues. You can view this video at http://youtu.be/fFgvqwgIvII . Once again, Thank you so much. Mr. Ryan LeClaire - UNITED STATES

"It was wonderful"

The staff aboard our Gecko eyes houseboat were amazing, the crew were rarely seen which gave us a real feeling of privacy & solitude which was so nice. When we did see them they were polite & very friendly. Our guide Dat was such a wonderful guy, he made everything so easy was so attentive to our every need. Dat even made a short movie for us of our experience which was such a nice touch & shows how attentive he was to our every need. The side tours were well organised & fun, Dat was very mindful of the heat & ensured that our comfort was well looked after with regards to the ground tours. The bike riding was such a high light.& the walking tour around the village was also great fun. Overall it was a wonderfull experience & I do thank you for upgrading us to one of your private houseboats... Thanks again for such a wonderful trip!!! Mr. Steven Moran - AUSTRALIA

"A fascinating insight into Cambodia"

My husband and I spent four days of our honeymoon on board the Jahan cruise , travelling from Siem Reap down to Phnom Penh, and we couldn't recommend it highly enough. The ship itself was beautiful, and the cabin very comfortable and spacious with its own private balcony. There were plenty of excursions and activities, all of which were very informative and the sort of thing we wouldn't have been able to do travelling under our own team, and our guide was excellent. Moreover, the crew were exceptional - and the food delicious. Thank you very much for your support! Mrs. Rachele Pipe - UNITED KINGDOM

"Mekong river experience and absolutely fabulous"

Family of 3 and very happy to have choosen this company while all was perfect. Food quality and choice, staff excellence, knowledge of the trip and service orientated! Good not have wished for any thing better! Try to get in touch with Miss Hong Nham from the company because she really makes a difference! Mr. Alain Trefois - MALDIVES

"Wonderful and communicative travel agent..."

We booked our 8 day trip on RV Jayavarman Cruise with InsideTravel and they were so helpful every step of the way. they assisted us with visas, excursions, and transportation too. They were five star all of the way and everything went so smooth and perfect. I would highly recommend using them! Once again, Thank you so much. Mrs. Renee Adelmann - UNITED STATES

"Highly recommended trip along the Mekong"

The Jahan cruise is a beautiful Mekong river cruise ship that is well appointed. The staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive and the food is of a very high standard. The daily excursions are well thought out and informative. Overall - a great trip!!! Mr. Mike Gustainis - AUSTRALIA

"Great experience"

The Mekong river cruise boat trip was great...from start to finish. The off-boat activities included programs for all ages. Not boring and not too long. We were traveling with kids (11 and 15), who also found the programs to be very interactive. Food was great, service, etc. Looking forward to our next trip, thank you so much for your excellent services!!! Mr. James Jacobson - UNITED STATES

DAY 7 – Vinh Long, Cai Bei to My Tho

mekong river cruise images

After breakfast, local boats pick up passengers and tour a brick and pottery factory and the Binh Hoa Phuoc Islet Fruit Tree Nursery. We visit a typical local dwelling and a showroom of traditional farming tools. Vinh Long, Vietnamese for ‘Majestic Dragon’, sits merrily in the middle of the Delta, protected by the two great arms of the Mekong. The soil of Vinh Long is enriched by silt deposits, making it ideal for growing mandarins and other citrus fruit.

Life here centres on the water. Houses are perched precariously on stilts that cling to the banks of the river. Hawkers peddle knick-knacks from their boats. Hundreds of small boats traverse the river every day. The unbridled warmth of the locals makes this a destination par excellence. The ship cruises towards Cai Be for a short panoramic tour. Cruising in Cambodia and Vietnam on a river cruise

A joint effort to untangle fishing nets in readiness for casting further upstream. Photo / Getty Images

If you want to find Cambodia and Vietnam’s actual hidden gems; places where few other tourists have trampled, it’s still possible with a river cruise, writes Nannette Holliday

A long wooden fishing boat putts past, stirring up the already murky Tonlé Sap River water. Sitting in the middle, a child and woman diligently untangle fishing nets in readiness for casting further upstream. The golden sunrise highlights a row of wooden stilt houses standing guard like soldiers on the steep riverbank opposite. The people of Koh Chen are going about their daily chores, oblivious to my intrusion.

I’m lying in my cosy bed, peeking out the large window of my air-conditioned en suite cabin aboard RV Toum Tiou II (TT2), a cute 14-cabin teak and steel-hulled river cruiser. TT2 oozes intimate luxury and old-world charm. My every need is met with a restaurant, bar, and sundeck staffed by friendly Cambodians.

TT2 is the second smallest of the five CF Mekong/Croisi Europe ships that have navigated these waterways since 2002. I’m on their nine-day New Discovery Cruise from Siem Reap, Cambodia, to Saigon, Vietnam.

Meandering upstream towards Kampong Chhnang, the river is a hive of activity, but in a peaceful, non-urgent way. Barges ferry cars, bikes, and people from shore to shore, and hubs of fishing boats dot the shorelines. TT2 sounds its horn only occasionally to warn them to protect their nets as we pass.

These Cambodians remain unfazed by our presence. We’re travelling the less tourist route. Even when we disembark at Kampong Chhnang fishing port, there are no hawkers selling their wares.

Cultural Cambodia

Each daily off-ship activity is included and diverse, offering additional insights into the cultural traditions of the regions we travel through.

Some guests bike 4km through the lush rice fields at Kampong Chhnang. Others relax in an air-conditioned minivan to Andong Reusey Community Village, where artisans work from their homes with unwavering passion.

We watch in amazement as Sophat, a 10th-generation potter, walks around a solid tree stump, patting the clay with her hands and a paddle, miraculously crafting a perfect pot. She’s never used an electric or foot-peddled pottery wheel.

Like an agile monkey, 72-year-old Mr Ry swings between sugar palm trees collecting juice to make palm wine and palm sugar. His 73-year-old wife stirs the palm juice over a large pot on an outdoor fire, turning it into palm sugar, which they sell for US$1.75 (approx. $3) a kilo.

At Kampong Tralach, I ride on an ox cart tray reserved for transporting goods, plodding past pea-green rice fields to Pothi Rokha Ram Pagoda, the oldest in Kampong Chhnang province. Sitting cross-legged, surrounded by deteriorating 18th-century murals painted by Pal and Chea, I listen to an orange-robed monk explain his life before he blesses me.

Mr Ry, 72, toasting his palm wine with the tour guide.

While at Vipassana Dhura Buddhist Meditation Centre in Oudong, Cambodia’s former capital, we talk casually with a nun. It’s inspirational and humbling to learn about her life and what meditation means to her as she washes plates in a plastic bowl under her home at the centre.

The journey offers an array of off-ship activities, including biking through rice fields, ox cart rides, and interactions with monks and artisans. Photo / Nannette Holliday

Tours at Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City cover all the big-ticket palaces, museums, historical sites, entry fees, and some local cafes and restaurants. An English-speaking guide adds local anecdotes to his history repertoire as we comfortably travel by air-conditioned bus amid the city’s hustle and bustle.

Culinary concoctions

Asian cuisine can be equally memorable, especially in various markets. At Oudong, the eye-opening contents include snakeheads, stuffed frogs, and red ants with bananas. Fried crickets and tarantulas dominate Phnom Penh’s huge domed Central Markets, and exotic black eggs, duck embryos, and fried rats lay between traditional Vietnamese foods and tropical fruits at Sa Dec Markets. The intermingled smells of raw meat, seafood, mystery organs, slippery creatures, and ripe fruits are another world.

With all meals included and TT2′s chef preparing bountiful Asian and Western meals from buffet breakfasts to copious three-course lunches, lavish five-course dinners, and even individually chef-cooked offerings, we’re never hungry, and there’s no need to experiment unless these unusual foods are on your wish list.

Visiting Vietnam

Gliding across the border into Vietnam at Vinh Xuong, there’s an eerie shift. The peaceful little Cambodian fishing boats are replaced by massive barges piled high with gravel and export goods, sharing our cruising space on the way to Saigon. Life is hectic. Large factories loom menacingly on one side, juxtaposing intermittent rice fields, fruit plantations, and uncaring cattle on the other.

Three hours later, Chau Doc was a breath of fresh air. A kaleidoscopic border town where Khmer, Chinese , Cham, and Kinh (Vietnamese) communities thrive. It’s as colourful as the floating fishing farms dotting the Hau River’s shores, 250km west of Ho Chi Minh City.

We ride the cable car up sacred Sam Mountain, dotted with pagodas, temples, and caves. At the top, vivid patchwork farm countryside and Vinh Te Canal stretch to the border. In town, thick incense fills the air at Mieu Ba Chua Xu Pagoda. We’re shoulder-to-shoulder with locals praying before the sacred Lady Chau statue, placing baskets of fruit, flowers, and whole pig offerings beside it.

An hour from town at Tra Su Cajuput Forest, a two-person rowboat meanders through waterways, floating over carpets of waterlilies and under towering paperbark trees. This vast natural wetland is home to various birds and animals. A long motorboat then zips to the other end of the forest, delivering us to an observation tower. The panoramic, majestic views of the biodiverse ecosystem are serene. In the hazy distance, I spy Sam Mountain.

Mekong Delta magic

Further into the Mekong Delta estuaries, the hectic Sa Dec riverside markets overflow with people and produce. A short stroll away, we enjoy traditional tea and glazed ginger at Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House, where French author Marguerite Duras lived and set her breathtaking literary novel, The Lover . It’s a treasure trove of nostalgia, antique furniture, stained-glass windows, and painted cement tiles.

My heart sinks when the community project centre appears to be a typical tourist haunt, with souvenirs blanketing the entrance. But behind the facade, locals diligently produce various-flavoured popping corn and rice cakes, cook, wrap, and package coconut candy, bottle rice wine infused with snakes and scorpions, and craft delicate rice paper sheets for those delicious spring rolls we love.

Nearby at Cai Be, the cooking class didn’t pan out as expected. Mercifully, real chefs had prepared a beautiful feast, which was worked off afterwards by bike riding or kayaking around the tropically fruit-laden islet.

Meaning “Beautiful Reed”, My Tho is the largest city and a major port in the bountiful Mekong Delta. Day trips from Ho Chi Minh City are popular, and many buses roll in at 11am as we return to TT2. Minus these tourists, we’ve enjoyed three hours of profound local connections. Some peacefully biking, others wrapped by slithering snakes or safely gliding in sampans along scenic palm-fringed canals, witnessing fruit harvesting and glazed fruit production.

The water highway into Saigon

Over lunch and relaxing drinks, TT2 drifts along Cho Gao Canal, the entrance to Saigon. Close to the shore again, we spy into farmer’s homes, temples, and pagodas. The canal is a water highway servicing more than 2000 commercial ships and barges daily. We’re privileged, as the five CF Mekong River Cruise ships are the only cruise ships to sail this 29km canal connecting Saigon and the Mekong.

Cruising into Vietnam’s lively capital at sunset, we dock at Bach Dang. We have two more nights aboard TT2, complete with city tours, but tonight, five of us have chosen the only optional tour—a Vespa Nightlife Food Tour. The bright two-wheel vintage machines and our drivers are waiting.

The Vespa Nightlife Food Tour in Saigon is an exciting conclusion to the cruise, immersing guests in the city's vibrant food scene.

Four fabulous hours zigzagging amongst the capital’s crazy city traffic, sipping sky-high cocktails, staring at city lights, devouring Saigon’s best banh mi, and a sidewalk seafood banquet with locals, rounded off with a rich hot chocolate nightcap at Maison Marou Saigon.

On the final morning, while sipping my coffee on the peaceful sundeck, I knew the nine-day New Discovery cruise had shown me another world full of authentic activities , countless unique experiences, people interactions, and hidden gems away from the usual tourist offerings.

All restaurant meals aboard, on-land tours, English-speaking guides and Wi-Fi are included. Alcohol is not included. However, a good selection is available and reasonably priced, or you can take your own aboard, and they happily refrigerate. The cruise operates from Siem Reap to Saigon or in reverse.
