  • Make Three Different Monarch Sanctuary Visits Very few companies offer tours to see the migration phenomenon of Mexico’s monarch butterflies. Of those that do, typically just a day trip is provided to one sanctuary. Our full package features a comprehensive itinerary including three separate monarch sanctuary visits, with all accommodations, meals and round-trip transportation from Mexico City.
  • Our Small Groups Tread Lightly We limit our groups to approximately 16 guests. And photo tours are limited to 12, to ensure personalized photography guidance. Small groups reduce our ecological impact, and an intimate context is essential for a quiet, wondrous experience with the butterflies.
  • Enjoy Authentic Cultural Encounters Unlike most butterfly tours, which are simply day trips to a single sanctuary, we also include several cultural encounters to enhance your authentic Mexico experience. At Toluca, originally an Indigenous settlement founded in the 13th century, we tour the Cosmovitral Botanic Gardens and stained glass panels, and in the lakeside resort town of Valle de Bravo, we visit the lively market in the colonial old town.
  • Mexican Lodgings & Cuisine with Local Color From a cozy inn in the small mountain hamlet of Angangueo to a luxury resort in a forested region of the Sierra Madre Mountains, our accommodations are chosen for their authenticity, charm, natural environs and access to the butterflies. We also savor home-cooked dishes sourced from fresh local food, reflecting the region's cultural heritage.
  • Your Presence Makes a Difference for the Future of Monarchs Your experience is enhanced by knowing that our presence is essential to the butterflies' continued survival: visitors demonstrate to locals that ecotourism can be a more viable and sustainable source of economic well-being than resource exploitation.
  • Our Guide-to-Traveler Ratio Ensures Personalized Service and Attention While the number of guides leading your trip depends on the number in the group (usually not more than 16, and just 12 on photo trips), the maximum guest-to-guide ratio will never be more than 8:1, ensuring a quiet, low-impact experience with the butterflies.
  • Outstanding Expedition Leaders with Unsurpassed Experience Nat Hab has a well-deserved international reputation for employing the highest-quality Expedition Leaders in the industry. Our monarch guides have years of experience, with in-depth training as naturalists. And, they receive additional resources from WWF's top scientists. Photo tours are led by a naturalist guide who is also an expert butterfly photographer adept at helping you capture outstanding images of the monarchs. See Expedition Leader bios  with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Promises a Superlative Butterfly Adventure With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee that clearly states that we will meet the high expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.

About the Monarch Butterflies

The Monarch Butterfly Migration is one of nature’s most spectacular events. This event occurs yearly when millions of Monarch Butterflies leave their summer home in the Northern USA and Canada to travel southward through Mexico and Central America.

When they reach their winter destination in the mountains of Mexico, they spend at least six months before returning north again in the springtime.

mexico city butterfly tour

When's the best time to see the Monarch Butterflies in Mexico?

The best time to spot monarch butterflies in Mexico is from late October through March . It is when they migrate from the United States and Canada to their wintering grounds in Mexico. However, the best time to see them is during their peak migration period, which runs from mid-November until late January.

The most popular place for visitors to see monarchs is at E l Rosario Monarch Butterfly Reserve , about an hour outside Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast. But you’ll also find them in other parts of Mexico, such as Michoacán or Oaxaca—check out where else you’d like to go before booking your trip!

mexico city butterfly tour

Migration patterns vary each year depending on weather conditions and other factors, so it’s hard to predict exactly when you’ll see them during your stay. However, you want to see these magical creatures during their annual migration. Therefore, we’d recommend visiting between December and January (this is also the prime tourist season).

It’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement of seeing these bright orange giants fluttering through your vision; however, it’s important not to disturb them! Monarch butterflies are delicate creatures easily disturbed by loud noises or sudden movements near their nests—behaviors that may cause them to decide not to return this year!

The monarch butterflies are the most magical sight you'll ever see

The Monarch Butterflies travel thousands of miles to Mexico, where they spend months resting in the trees and eating nectar. Take the chance to meet them during their migration! Get in touch to book your tour.

Mexico Butterflies Guide & FAQ

What’s the story of the monarch butterflies of mexico.

Each year, monarch butterflies make an epic 2,500- to 3,000-mile-journey (4,000-4,800 km) from Canada and the USA all the way to Central Mexico. The insects migrate to avoid the cold northern winters.

Most years, monarchs begin to arrive in Mexico in early-November, just in time for Day of the Dead , one of the most important holidays in Mexico .

Given their arrival date, some Mexican communities consider monarchs sacred. This reverence for monarchs goes back several centuries! In fact, monarchs appear in Aztec stone carvings and paintings.

Monarchs are said to carry the souls of the dead with them, bring them along on visits from the afterlife. Others consider them messengers from their ancestors.

Either way, monarchs are an important part of indigenous Mexican culture .

Can you visit the monarch butterflies in Mexico?

Yes — You can visit the monarch butterflies in Mexico. In fact, this activity is worthy of anyone’s Mexico bucket list.

monarch butterfly resting on a hand during monarch butterfly tours in Mexico

Standing in the midst of millions of fluttering monarchs is an indescribably amazing experience. Taking a tour is an excellent way to visit a monarch butterfly biosphere reserve in Mexico.

Let someone else worry about the transportation and logistics, and spend all your energy enjoying the incredible monarchs.

All ages are welcome at the reserves to learn about the migration of the monarch butterfly to Mexico.

Anyone who has trouble walking or with balance is encouraged to ride a horse up the mountain rather than hike.

When can you see butterflies in Mexico?

The Mexico monarch butterfly season runs from early- November until the end of March , when all the monarchs congregate in the mountainous forests of Central Mexico.

The best monarch butterfly Mexico dates tend to be between mid-January and March . During these months, the weather is warmer, so the butterflies are more active.

However, it is still worthwhile to try and see monarchs in mid-November and December , if you happen to be visiting during those months. While there will be less butterflies, you should still see a lot of them.

Keep in mind, you may have to hike higher into the mountains earlier in the season. It’s a good way to stretch your legs after the long drive to see a monarch butterfly from Mexico City or Morelia, but also strenuous.

What is the best time to see monarchs in Mexico?

The best time to see Monarchs in Mexico is between mid-January and late-March . These months are warmer, so the monarchs tend to fly around more.

monarch butterfly flocking on the ground during monarch butterfly tours in Mexico

Of course, even during those peak months, the butterflies will be less active on cold and cloudy days. If you have the option, try to pick days with a warm weather forecast for your monarch butterfly trip to Mexico.

Although seeing them on the trees is cool, it is amazing to have them flying and swooping en masse.

If you’re going to Mexico earlier in the year, you might still be able to see monarchs. These incredible insects start arriving in Central Mexico in early- November (or sometimes even late- October ).

What month are butterflies most active in Mexico?

Monarch butterflies are most active in Mexico on warm sunny days, from about mid-January until late-March .

These months tend to have warmer weather, which encourages the monarchs to flit about in search of food and water.

These months are considered peak Mexico butterfly season because this is when the Mexico monarch butterfly migration period is in full swing.

There can be millions and millions of monarchs coating the trees and fluttering through the air, making for an awe-inspiring experience.

Of course, during these peak months, any monarch butterfly reserve Mexico has available will be pretty crowded. Try to go on a weekday rather than a weekend to avoid the crowds.

What month do monarch butterflies arrive in Mexico?

November — The monarch butterflies tend to arrive in Mexico around the Day of Dead holiday on November 1st and 2nd.

monarch butterfly flocking on the tree trunk during monarch butterfly tours in Mexico

Of course, it is possible for them to arrive in the final weeks of October , or late-November instead. A lot depends on the weather conditions they meet during their thousands-mile migration from Canada to Mexico.

Since the butterflies often arrive on Mexico’s Day of the Dead , they are associated with the festivities on that day.

Some people believe that monarch butterflies carry the visiting souls of the dead, while others consider them messengers from the afterlife.

What month are monarch butterflies most active?

If you’re wondering when monarch butterflies are most active, the answer is that it depends on the year . Usually, the butterflies are most active in late-December , January , or February .

El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary: A Complete Visitor’s Guide

El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary is the most famous place to see the Monarch butterfly migration in Mexico . This is because it is the sanctuary with the most butterflies, but also the most tourists.

Nevertheless, it is still a mindblowing place to visit. If you arrive at the right time of year, thousands of butterflies will already greet you in the car park. But arriving at the main colony is one of the most beautiful things you can ever see.

Keep reading to find out all you need to know about visiting El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary 🤠

Butterflies sitting on green leaves at El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary

Where is El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary?

The El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary is located in the mountains west of Mexico City within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve . It is therefore possible to reach it on a (long) day trip from Mexico City or stay in a nearby town like Angangueo.

A map showing the location of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve near Mexico City

How to get to El Rosario from Mexico City

There are plenty of options on how to get to the El Rosario Butterfly Sanction. You can rent a car, catch the bus or colectivo, or go on an organized tour.

The most convenient way to get to El Rosario is by renting a car and driving. It is about a 3-hour drive from Mexico City to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and El Rosario. Search and book your rental car here or here 👇

Catch a Bus

You can also catch a bus to the town of Angangueo and then catch a taxi or colectivo from Angangueo to El Rosario. The bus departs from the Poniente bus station in Mexico City 4 times a day for 275 pesos (13.50 USD) and takes around 3 hours . You can buy your tickets at the station, at the Zina bus website or on Busbud.

Travel everywhere for less

Take a Taxi

When you arrive in Angangueo and get a taxi to El Rosario you will need to arrange a return trip . The sanctuary is quite isolated so you will not be able to return with a different taxi. The taxi drivers are used to this and will include the return journey in the price. Arrange a local taxi in Angangeo (there are plenty) or check your options here 👇

Catch a Colectivo

It is also possible to catch a colectivo from Angangueo to El Rosario. This is the cheapest way to get there. But the colectivo is quite unreliable and only leaves when it is full. But if you want to save money then this is the best option. To catch the colectivo make sure to arrive as early as possible at the pickup location , best around 8 am .

Where to Stay at El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary

El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary can be visited on a day trip from Mexico City. But that means driving for about 6 hours that day. That’s why I recommend staying the night in Angangueo or another town close by. There are no hotels directly at the sanctuary.

Angangueo is located in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. It is a Pueblo Magico located only a 25-minute drive from El Rosario and worth a visit. Angangueo also gives you easy access to Sierra Chincua , another amazing sanctuary about a 20-minute drive away.

Staying in Angangueo allows you to visit multiple sanctuaries in the area, support the local economy and get the best out of your trip. We really enjoyed its rustic charm and peacefulness. But if you are short on time, a tour might be your best option.

Mexico City Butterfly Tours

If you do not feel like spending the night in Angangueo or getting there on your own you can do a tour from Mexico City. Most tours take around 12 hours so it will be a long day.

Tours by Locals has a very highly rated tour from Mexico City to El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary. It is quite an expensive tour at 550 USD for 2 people. But it includes pick up and drop off at your accommodation in Mexico City. The guide is also English-speaking and will take you through the sanctuary.

You can also check out GetYourGuide and Viator for more butterfly tours from Mexico City.

Read our Angangueo guide if you want to visit El Rosario on your own 🤠

Morelia Butterfly Tours

If you happen to be in Morelia it is possible to do a tour of El Rosario from there too. Morelia is a beautiful city that is well worth visiting.

Viator has highly-rated tours from Morelia to El Rosario or Sierra Chincua butterfly sanctuary. You will have to check which butterfly sanctuary they are planning on visiting.

Book here: Tour from Morelia to Butterfly Sanctuaries 🚐

El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary Entrance Fee

Entrance to El Rosario is only 80 pesos (4 USD) which is an incredible price for this amazing experience.

Guides at El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary

When you visit El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary you have to go with a guide. Most guides will only speak Spanish so if you can’t speak Spanish you will have trouble communicating with them.

But their main purpose is to make sure you stay on the trek, be quiet and respect the butterfly’s environment. So even if you do speak Spanish they won’t give you a full-on tour as you might expect at other places.

Every person or group who arrives gets their own guide so you won’t end up in a big group of people you don’t know. The guides work for tips so make sure to tip them once the tour is over.

Tip: Try and be generous with your tips as it may help save the butterflies. The more money that flows into the local economy the less likely it is locals will have to engage in activities like illegal logging to make a living. Another great reason to stay in Angangueo 💛

A guide with a white cowboy hat walking along a path in the pine forests

Hiking to the Butterflies

El Rosario is quite a developed sanctuary and you will see from the entrance that it is built for a large number of tourists. The path goes up the hill to the main colony and you can choose to hike it or go by horseback.

If you choose to go up the hill by horse then you will take a different path than the hikers. The path at El Rosario is quite steep at some points so for the elderly, anyone with health conditions, or if you love horse riding taking a horse may be a good idea. We chose to walk.

Just be warned that the horses can not take you all the way to the main butterfly colony. They will take you most of the way then you have to walk the last 15 minutes yourself.

Horses walking through a meadow at El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary

The elevation of El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary is about 3,000m (9,900 feet) so be prepared that the air will be thin. If you are not used to being at high altitudes then you should take it easy to avoid getting out of breath.

The path at El Rosario is fairly steep at some sections and quite developed with concrete paths and stairs. Some people may find the hike quite difficult but as long as you are in decent shape you will be fine.

It takes about 30 minutes to get to the end of the hike and the entire time you are walking through beautiful pine forests. If you are walking up at the right time of day then there may be thousands of butterflies flying over your head as you walk up the hill already!

People walking down a path at El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary

Arriving at the main El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Colony

Along the path, you will already see many butterflies flying in the air. But once you reach the main colony you will see millions of them!

Seeing the main colony at El Rosario is a crazy experience . Once you arrive at the main viewing point you can see a cluster of trees in the distance covered with millions of butterflies.

The butterflies gather on the branches of the trees in such large numbers that they start to bend because of the weight. Some branches even break because there are so many butterflies on them.

Read more cool butterfly facts here! ✨

A woman looking up the trees with thousand of butterflies flying around

The butterflies only fly in large numbers when the sun is out . So if you arrive and there is a bit of cloud cover I recommend waiting around for as long as possible for some sun.

When the sun comes out you will see thousands start flying it is an awesome sight. We had both, clouds and sun, and really could see the difference.

One thing to remember is that you have to view the butterflies in silence. Monarch butterflies are very sensitive to sound so any loud noises could disturb them. A benefit of this is that it is super peaceful when you are watching the butterflies as no one is talking.

There is no time limit at the main colony so you can spend as long as you want there. Once you are done you follow the same path back down the hill. It is an amazing sight and we are already planning to visit some other sanctuaries in Mexico on a future trip.

When is the best time to see Monarch Butterflies in Mexico?

The best time to see monarch butterflies in Mexico is late January and February . At this point, they have gathered in the largest numbers and it is warm enough that they will take flight during the day when the sun is out.

January and February are the best months but the start of March could also be a good time too. Our friend Carmelo whom we met in Angangueo and who lives right by the sanctuary said that the butterflies start leaving in March.

So if you visit at this point there are apparently thousands of butterflies all over the roads surrounding the area outside the sanctuary. It sounded beautiful the way he described it so the start of March could be an awesome time to visit too.

All you need to know about the Monarch Butterfly Migration 🦋

Where is the best place to see Monarch Butterflies in Mexico?

We visited two sanctuaries in Mexico: Sierra Chincua and El Rosario. El Rosario is the more famous sanctuary as the butterflies gather there in the greatest numbers.

What I liked most about El Rosario is that while you were walking up the hill to the main colony there were hundreds of butterflies flying over your head. Whereas at Sierra Chincua you only really saw vast numbers of butterflies at the end of the hike.

But the hike itself at Sierra Chincua is nicer because there are fewer people and the paths are less developed. While El Rosario is quite developed, narrower and on the weekends can get quite crowded.

So if you feel like more of a nature walk then head to Sierra Chincua but if you want to see the most butterflies head to El Rosario. And if you have enough time I recommend going to both as they are both equally incredible in different ways!

Hi Susan, great choice to see the butterflies. It was one of our highlights in Mexico! If you like hiking you should also check out Sierra Chincua Butterfly Sanctuary. It’s a very nice walk through farmland and a forest, different to El Rosario. And it’s worth it to do both! Both are also easy to visit with kids. Apart from them check out Angangeos town center, there is a lot of art work and a little hike up a mirador. We wrote about all of it on our blog. Enjoy!

Experience the extraordinary Monarch Butterflies that arrive to overwinter in the oyamel forests in Mexico between November and March each year

Monarch Butterflies in Mexico

From November to March each year, you can be witness to one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the forested mountains west of Mexico City: Monarch butterflies over-wintering in Mexico.

The very special Methuselah  generations of butterflies migrate each year, leaving the colder northern climes of the U.S. and Canada to take winter refuge and breed in Mexico.

The butterflies’ winter migration

These migrating Monarch butterflies travel in colonies of about 20 million insects and will travel between 80-120 nautical miles per day, depending on the wind and other weather conditions. The butterflies take advantage of ascending warm-air currents, gliding in the thrust they provide, needing only to flap their wings when the air current diminishes a little or when they change their flight path. This technique uses their energy efficiently, and physically enables them to undertake the long journey.

They overwinter in Mexico between November and March

The butterflies usually start arriving in early November, and between mid-late November and the end March, it’s possible to visit one of the sanctuaries open to visitors and witness these remarkable insects in their natural habitat.

The Monarch Butterflies settle in the Oyamel fir tree forests which are situated west of Mexico City; along the eastern perimeter of the Mexican state of Michoacán, also bordering the State of Mexico. Once here, the butterflies cluster on the tree trunks and remain in the region for the winter.

As the sun heats the day, some of the butterflies will flutter in the forests and return to the tree trunks when the air cools in the evening.

Peak viewing season is between mid-January and the end of March. Before the mid-January, the air temperature on the mountain is colder and the butterflies don’t flutter as much.

The Mexican government has set up a number of protected sanctuaries within a biosphere reserve to ensure that the important habitats required by the Monarch Butterflies are protected and preserved, while still allowing visitors to witness these remarkable insects amidst some of Mexico’s most breath-taking landscapes.

Hi there! Is it better to fly from Newark to Morelia to see the butterflies or drive from GDL?

Currently visiting Uruapan and heading toward Angangueo to visit the Monarch preserves. I really want to visit Cerro Pelon! J M Butterfly B&B is booked solid. I heard the entrance to Cerro Pelon at El Chapulin is open, but I can’t find it on the map or find any information. Can anyone please share any knowledge they might have, or suggest a guide who knows birds and speaks ome English? Thanks, Rob

I am wondering the same thing? Is a guide necessary? I can’t afford. Message me on Instagram seawandering

For those who have gone in December: are there enough butterflies fluttering around then to get the full experience? I have a tour scheduled in January 2022 but am wondering if it’s going to be cancelled. If it is, my airline ticket needs to be used by December 31, 2022–so may have to switch to a December tour. Will I be disappointed if I go in December rather than in January? Thanks!

Hi Barb, as of end of January they are pretty much dormant on the trees. It’s still a pleasant walk in the forest and the crowd is not overwhelming. The butterflies are more active when the sun shows up but it’s hard to predict as it is high up in the forest.

I am hoping to visit this winter and do some filming with a DSLR and a sports camera. What are the restrictions on filming in the preserve? The footage will be used in educational videos on YouTube and at live appearances. I know I can’t use a drone but I was thinking of getting a telescoping pole so I could get a different perspective.

Hi Lucas, We recommend you contact your nearest Mexican Consulate for advice; they can provide guidance and a permit, if you need one. You can find a directory here https://www.mexperience.com/mexico-essentials/mexican-consulates-abroad/

If we get to Sierra Chincua in mid-March 2022, will we still be able to experience the Monarchs or will they be gone by then? I’ve gotten conflicting responses to this question. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

Hello John, It will depend on the year. The butterflies begin to leave in early March but some years you might still be able to see some around mid-March. To be sure of seeing them it’s best to arrive between December and the end of February; they are more active mid January-late February which is why that is the ‘peak’ viewing season.

What a beautiful site. On my bucket list to visit. Question: are people able to visit during the pandemic? Thinking about January- February 2021

Hi Kanu, The sancturies are open and our travel associates are arranging tours in the region.

We live in puebla, what is the best way to organize to visit the sanctuary ASAP?

I saw that the sanctuaries in Michoacan have COVID restriction, visitors over 60 not allowed. Is the also true for the sanctuaries in the state of México?

Hello Bruce, We checked with our associates and contacts and the restriction on over 60’s is not true; everyone is welcome. They have covid protocols in place.

Which bio reserves are open in January 2022? Is El Rosario open to touriss? Is Sierra Chincua open? Cerro Pelon? Thanks. Sally

I’d love to know which sanctuaries are open too! January 2022. Apparently Cerro Pelon is closed.

Thank you very very much for the video with the monarchs. I life here in Valle de Bravo close to one of the santuaries, and I have been up there many times with friends and visitors, but never before I have seen such a marvelous video with a drone. May God bless you.

On our Bucket list to experience, within the next cuppla years. Agreed on the GO! comments about the wonderful culture and people.

This is a wonderful article. I visited last year and was in total awe !!! Never once did I fear for my life and I went on a tour as a single… I agree with James, you are probably safer than in Milwaukee, Detroit, or Chicago, although I have not had a problem in any of those cities either. The monarchs are absolutely awesome–and I hate the overuse of that word, but I cried when I experienced this 8th wonder of the world… Sandra

Is the hike difficult? I have a knee replacement that is not doing well.

The climb does require a good degree of physical fitness. There is an option to ride a horse/mule up to the sanctuary. If you contact our travel planner they will be able to advise you: https://www.mexperience.com/travel/travel-planning-service/

Sandra, I too am seeking to travel alone to experience this phenomenal 8th wonder. Any advice, help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Cal

I experienced this too. It is one of most incredible experiences in my life!! Which sanctuary did you visit?

An interesting novel by Barbara Kingsolver…. not about Mexico, but about Monarchs is Flight Behavior. We’ll one day visit this natural event in Mexico. We’ve traveled throughout Mexico with nothing but joy being immersed in a beautiful culture!

That novel needs to be made into a movie.

If security is a concern, hire a guide. I have been to Piedra Herrada Sanctuary 3 times without difficulty (hint: rent the horse!). What an awesome experience!

Had a wonderful experience with the butterflies as well as stopovers in Ciudad Hidalgo and Morelia. NO problems, friendly people…

I travel at least 2 times/ year to Michoacán to purchase folk art from the amazing artisans in many small pueblos. I have never been worried about my safety in the 8 years I’ve been doing it. One must always be aware of surroundings (just like in the US), don’t do dumb things and be respectful of the beautiful people and culture. My advice to people is always to GO, enjoy and be amazed at the beauty of life in the great country of Mexico. Viva!

I am alone and in Puerto Vallarta. What would be the safest way to get to the closest sanctuary? While also being COVID-safe.

I live in Patzcuaro and there are no reports about dangers in or around the butterfly sanctuaries. Much has been exaggerated by US media. If you are a visitor and not dealing in drugs, there is little to worry about. Latest report from NY Times says Monarchs are increasing in numbers this year as they leave the north and fly to Michoacan. Godspeed!

I have lived in southern Mexico for 8 years. I am kicking myself for not going to see the MM earlier. All reports that we hear say that the Michoacan Monarch migration area is unsafe. Staying alert doesn’t help much when you are facing a teenager with a gun. Michoacan is a beautiful state with many craft villages. This is very sad.

Hi Bliss, This is actually not true. The Monarch area is safe. The news last year was spun for shock value. So sad that the media does this.

We are wanting to visit one of the reserves near Mexico City this weekend (Jan 15-18, 2021). Are they still open to visitors?

Hi Kristi, We are undestand the sanctuaries are open — you can contact our travel associates (link in the article) and they can help you to arrange a tour.

Jeff, there is no “current condition”. Events continually fluctuate in the U.S. engendered drug demand, gun supplied, government (NAFTA anyone?) sponsored turmoil. The butterflies are disappearing for related reasons. Take a chance, keep your wits about you, see the monarchs while you can, enjoy the wonderful people of Mexico – go.

I have heard many reports of un-safe conditions in these areas, raning from nervous teenagers with guns robbing you of your possessions to kidnappings and breakins… What is the current condition of life in this area?

Probably safer than Chicago or any large city in the US! I have guests that stay with me every year on there way to this miracle of nature with no problem.

I have visited two different Monarch sanctuaries in Morelia every year for the past five years. Never have I felt the least bit unsafe. Please do not let the U.S. media scare you away. It is SO worth the trip!

mexico city butterfly tour

Mexico is full of amazing natural wonders to see. For families looking for unique travel experiences, booking Michoacan butterfly tours to see the monarch butterflies of Mexico is an absolute must.

In the forests of Michoacan state, every year during the months of November through March, families will be able to see trees (from the tree trunks to the treetops!) covered with the monarch butterflies of Mexico. Seeing these monarchs on your Michoacan butterfly tours is truly an amazing sight. The Mexico butterfly migration needs to be on everyone's bucket list!

Our family witnessed the butterflies migration to Mexico in real life in 2019, when we had a monarch butterfly migration Mexico excursion to the forests of Michoacan. What an experience! We were surrounded by butterflies, and were awed by the power of nature.

Best time to see monarch butterflies of Mexico

The best time to see monarch butterflies of Mexico is in the winter. While the exact dates vary, you can generally plan to see them between November to March.

Monarchs have a life cycle of 6 to 8 weeks. During this time, they grow from an egg to a caterpillar, and then to a chrysalis. After these 3 phases, they finally become a butterfly.

mexico city butterfly tour

The monarch butterflies of Mexico congregate in the state of Michoacan. They come from the northeastern United States and Canada, over 3,000 miles away. The butterflies travel to Mexico during the North American winter months.

After that, the monarch butterflies live the rest of their days in Mexico. Their children also live their whole entire lives in Mexico. And in the spring, their grandchildren make the migration back up to northeastern North America.

The following winter, the great-grandchildren of these butterflies of Mexico, return to Michoacan, a journey that their ancestors took, many generations before them!

Where to stay for Michoacan butterfly tours

The best place to see monarch butterflies in Mexico is at a monarch butterfly sanctuary. There are two large sanctuaries within the state of Michoacan: El Rosario and Sierra Chincua.

Outside of the state of Michoacan, you can find monarch butterflies at Piedra Herrada and Machero, but these sanctuaries are much smaller compared to the Michoacan sanctuaries.

Street view of the town of Angangueo, Mexico. Cars parked on a cobblestone street in front of colorful buildings.

The towns closest to the Michoacan monarch butterfly sanctuaries are Ocampo and Angangueo. You'll find a few lodging options in or around these towns. But be aware, the number of lodging options is limited.

Alternatively, you can look a little farther away from the monarch butterfly sanctuary, to cities like Zitacuaro, San Felipe, or even Hidalgo. You'll have more access to restaurants and convenience stores if you stay in one of these cities. But the downside is it will take you longer to get to the monarch butterflies sanctuary.

Here are three hotels you can book for your Michoacan butterfly tours.

Hotel Villa Monarca

Located in the town of San Felipe, Hotel Villa Monarca is about a fifteen minute drive to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. This is a fairly convenient option for lodging for your Michoacan butterfly tours.

mexico city butterfly tour

Families have the option of choosing rooms that can sleep 4 people or villas that can sleep 4-6 people. Rooms and villas come with free WiFi and room service. Rollaway beds are available for an extra fee.

The property has a pool, though it will likely be too cold to swim if you're visiting in the winter months. And there is free self parking on site. There is also a restaurant at the property that offers cooked-to-order breakfasts for 175 pesos (roughly $8.75 USD) per person.

Ex-Hacienda El Molino

For larger families, an option for lodging during your Michoacan butterfly tours is Ex-Hacienda El Molino , located in Hidalgo. This hotel offers a family room that can accommodate up to 8 people. Rooms are equipped with free WiFi and limited room service.

mexico city butterfly tour

The property offers free continental breakfasts on weekends. There are outdoor pools as well as a playground on the property. However, in the winter months, you likely won't be able to use those facilities as it will be too cold. Ex-Hacienda El Molino also has a garden and picnic area.

Hotel El Conquistador Monarca

Located in Zitacuaro, Hotel El Conquistador Monarca is only a 9 minute drive from the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. This is a convenient location for families to stay for your Michoacan butterfly tours. However, the rooms are pretty basic, even though they do offer free WiFi.

mexico city butterfly tour

Hotel El Conquistador Monarca has a gym and restaurant on-site, and also free self parking onsite. The hotel is also located close to San Felipe de Los Alzati Archeological Zone, about a 16 minute drive away.

Michoacan butterfly tours to book for the monarch butterfly sanctuary.

While you can certainly see the monarch butterflies of Mexico on your own, one of the best ways to experience the monarch butterfly migration is to book a guided tour. You'll be able to learn much more from taking Michoacan butterfly tours than if you visited on your own.

mexico city butterfly tour

There are plenty of Michoacan butterfly tours available that leave from Mexico City. However, you'll need to keep in mind that these Michoacan butterfly tours will typically take a full day, at least 12 hours.

A less tiring option, especially if you have kids, is to take a weekend trip to Michoacan state and find Michoacan butterfly tours that are more locally based, such as from the city of Morelia.

Here are my top recommendations for tours to book.

1. Monarch Butterfly Tour (Departing from Morelia)

This tour is offered by Yei Tours and starts off in Morelia, the capital city of Michoacan state. A private guide will take you to either El Rosario or Sierra Chincua. Admission to these sanctuaries are included.

2. Monarch Butterfly Private Tour (Morelia)

This private tour is offered by Alfredo Tour Guide. Like the first tour on this list, this tour picks up in Morelia and will take you to either El Rosario or Sierra Chincua. A private guide and admission to the sanctuaries are included.

3. Butterfly Monarch Tour from Mexico City

If you don’t have room in your Mexico itinerary for a multi-day trip to Michoacan state, consider taking a day trip from Mexico City. This full day tour offered by Paseos Turisticos takes you from Mexico City to Sierra Chincua and back. Note that departure time is early, around 6am, and you will likely get back to Mexico City in the evening.

4. Monarch Butterfly Tour from Mexico City

This is another monarch butterfly Mexico tour that takes you from Mexico City to monarch butterfly biosphere reserve, Sierra Chincua. Offered by Escapadas Edomex, the tour also includes a pre-Hispanic gastronomic workshop. Departure time is 6:30am, and return is 6:30pm.

Tips for visiting the monarch butterflies of Mexico sanctuary

The area where the monarch butterflies typically migrate is called the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 100 kilometers from Mexico City, in the state of Michoacan. The biosphere reserve covers an area of over 56,000 hectares.

mexico city butterfly tour

The best time to visit these sanctuaries and see the monarch butterflies of Mexico is during the winter, from January to March. However, even in November you can still see a good number of monarch butterflies. If you book your Michoacan butterfly tours at the beginning of the season, there will be fewer tourists there!

If you're planning to see the monarch butterflies of Mexico on your own, the easiest way to get to the monarch butterfly sanctuary for your Michoacan butterfly tours is to drive there by car. From San Miguel de Allende , for example, it will take about four hours to drive to get to the monarch butterflies of Mexico sanctuary.

For more trip planning tips, take a look at these helpful Mexico travel tips .

Things to do at the butterfly sanctuary

For those who don't want to book one of the guided Michoacan butterfly tours and prefer to explore the butterfly sanctuaries on their own, there are two main sanctuaries in Michoacan where you can see the monarch butterflies of Mexico: El Roasario (near Ocampo) and Sierra Chincua (near Angangueo).

mexico city butterfly tour

While El Rosario is the more popular of the sanctuaries, with its wide paths and paved steps, Sierra Chincua is also a good place to visit. The hike is not as steep, and walking along the path feels more like being out in nature.

Entrance to either of these sanctuaries will cost around 80 pesos. If you have a car, you will also need to pay extra to park the car. The best time to go to these sanctuaries is in the morning, between 9am to 10am.

If you're visiting the monarch butterflies of Mexico sanctuary on your own, you’ll be assigned a guide. Having a guide is mandatory, and it’s advisable to hire one as they are very knowledgeable about the area. Your guide will be able to lead you to where the butterflies are.

Read below to see what else you can do during your visit to the monarch butterflies of Mexico.

For more ideas of things to do in Mexico, take a look at our 10 day Mexico itinerary .

1. Ride horses

If your kids love animals, consider riding a horse up the mountain. In both sanctuaries, renting a horse to ride costs 100 pesos per horse. This is a much more relaxing way to get up the mountain, and the horses are led by guides who ascend the mountain at a leisurely pace.

mexico city butterfly tour

After seeing monarch butterflies at the top of the mountain, you can opt to ride a horse on the way down, which costs an additional 100 pesos. Or if you want, you can hike down the mountain.

2. Take a hike

Michoacan state is a mountainous state in Mexico. The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve sits in a very mountainous area. An active way to see the monarch butterflies of Mexico during your Michoacan butterfly tours is to hike up to the top of the mountains where the butterfly sanctuaries are located.

mexico city butterfly tour

The hike will take about an hour, or longer if your kids like to take breaks like ours do. However, you’ll see butterflies along the way, and once you get to the top, you’ll be amazed at the number of butterflies you’ll see!

3. Sample local food

You'll certainly work up an appetite during your Michoacan butterfly tours. Fortunately, there are dozens of food stalls located near the entrance of both El Rosario and Sierra Chincua. Many of these food stalls serve regional Michoacan cuisine, at a fairly decent price, so it’s a great chance to sample local food.

mexico city butterfly tour

In the afternoon, the monarch butterflies of Mexico come down from the mountain and fly around the field. This is a good opportunity to get some lunch and see the butterflies while you eat. It truly is a magical experience!

4. Explore archaeological sites

One way to supplement your Michoacan butterfly tours experience is to throw in some history. Nearby to the monarch butterflies of Mexico sanctuary is Zona Arqueologica de Zirahuato. This archaeological site is open every day from 9am to 6pm.

A view of Michoacan during Michoacan butterfly tours

Entrance to the site is 55 pesos. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, after seeing monarch butterflies in the morning.

🦋 How to See the Mexico Butterflies Migration in 2024

Want to see the butterflies in mexico.

You’re in the right place, as this Ultimate Mexico Butterflies Migration Guide covers everything you need to know about the monarch butterflies of Mexico!

I’ve lived in Mexico since 2018 and have had the amazing opportunity to see this migration a few times — and trust me, it’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Ready to learn more about the migration of butterflies to Mexico?

From which Mexico butterfly sanctuary is the best, to the best Mexico butterfly tours and what to pack for your visit — it’s all in this article, so let’s get to it!

What is the monarch butterfly migration in Mexico?

The Mexican butterfly migration is an annual journey where millions of monarchs travel more than 3,000 miles from Canada to Mexico, and back, in about two months .

Arriving in Mexico by November , these butterflies spend the winter months in the Oyamel fir forests of Central Mexico. This is known as overwintering.

As these butterflies migrate, they rely on the sap from the milkweed plant to assist them in laying eggs.

This flowering plant serves as a crucial food source for the larvae, and a breeding ground for the next generation.

In March , the monarchs start their return northward to Canada. Upon arrival, their lifecycle will be complete.

Monarch Butterfly Migration Cycle

Remarkably, the migratory generation of monarchs responsible for this epic journey has an extended lifespan of up to 8-9 months .

The average lifespan of most monarch butterflies is significantly shorter, ranging from 2-6 weeks for adults.

These non-migratory generations hatch, mature, mate, and die within these few weeks, completing several generations within a year.

The migratory generation, born in late summer and early fall, benefits from an extended lifespan.

This adaptation allows them to reach Mexico and survive the winter, mate, and start their journey back north, where they lay the next generation’s eggs.

This cycle is crucial for their survival and serves as an indicator of environmental health and biodiversity.

Monarch Butterfly Migration Map

🦋 mexico butterflies fun facts.

One of the most unique Mexican animals , the majority of butterflies you see in Mexico are monarchs. However, Mexico has 2,045 species of butterflies!

These include endemic butterflies like the White-tipped ghost-skipper and Mexican Kite-Swallowtail, as well as the Nabokov’s Satyr and Carousing Jewelmark.

What is the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico?

Mexico’s Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a critical conservation area in Central Mexico that spans more than 56,259 hectares (about 140,000 acres).

Established to protect the Mexican butterfly migration , it’s a key wintering site and breeding ground location for the millions of monarch butterflies Mexico has.

The Mexico Monarch Butterfly Reserve is located in various regions across Michoacán State and the State of Mexico, and includes several butterfly sanctuaries.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, this reserve is known for its biodiversity. It is also vital for the study of monarch butterfly conservation.

The UNESCO Monarch Butterfly Reserve in Mexico showcases the importance of habitat preservation in the face of climate change and deforestation.

Through local and international efforts, the reserve aims to ensure the sustainability of the monarch migration for future generations.

Where do the monarch butterflies go in Mexico?

In Mexico, the monarch butterflies gather in the Oyamel fir forests located within the Transvolcanic Belt of Central Mexico .

Monarch butterflies migrate to the forested mountains in the Mexican states of Michoacán and the State of Mexico.

Oyamel fir trees , which only grow at high altitudes of 7,800-11,800 feet above sea level (2,400-3,600 m), offer the ideal microclimate for monarchs to survive the winter.

The cool temperatures at these high altitudes slow the butterflies’ metabolism, allowing them to conserve energy.

This unique habitat provides the necessary conditions for monarchs to cluster together on the branches of the Oyamel trees (Abies religiosa), creating a spectacular sight.

What is the best time to see monarchs in Mexico?

Wondering, When do butterflies migrate? The best time to visit Mexico to see the monarch migration is between late November and March .

The peak viewing season, when the butterflies are most active and the forests are dense with monarchs, is usually from late January to early March.

This timing aligns with the warmer days of late winter when the monarchs cluster less and fly more, making them easier to observe.

I recommend planning your trip around these months for the most incredible views of the monarchs in their winter habitat.

Where is the best place to see monarch butterflies in Mexico?

You can explore four primary Mexican Monarch butterfly sanctuaries to experience the migration of monarch butterflies in Mexico.

1. El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán State

💰Price: 80 pesos (about $5 USD) | ⏰ Hours : Daily 8am to 5pm | 🥾 Guides available but not needed

While each sanctuary offers a unique vantage point of this natural wonder, El Rosario Sanctuary near Ocampo is the most popular monarch butterfly sanctuary Mexico has.

Seeing these Michoacan monarchs involves a steep hour-long trek, although many visitors are greeted by butterflies much closer to the entrance.

Given its popularity, visitors are typically given about 20 minutes at each viewing area to accommodate the large numbers, especially during peak times.

For a less crowded experience, I recommend going during the weekdays, although you should be mindful of potential school groups.

This Michoacan butterfly sanctuary has one of the most substantial roosts of monarch butterflies, making it a top pick for anyone who only has time for one sanctuary visit.

🚘 HOW TO GET TO EL ROSARIO SANCTUARY

Getting there can be as simple as hiring a taxi from Angangueo, a nearby town.

If you are coming from Zitácuaro, options range from rental cars for convenience to colectivos (local mini buses) for a more budget-friendly approach.

The latter involves a change in the town of Ocampo Michoacan, and then a short ride to El Rosario.

Minibuses are available for the return trip to Zitácuaro, with the last one departing at around 6pm for a fare of 50 pesos (about $3 USD).

Although there are many tours to this particular sanctuary, this is one of the easiest sanctuaries to get to if you want to do it independently.

2. Sierra Chincua Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán  State

💰 Price: 80 pesos (about $5 USD)  | ⏰ Hours : Daily, 8am to 5pm | 🥾 Note: Guide needed

Sierra Chincua Sanctuary offers a more intimate experience with the monarch butterflies near Angangueo.

Entrance fees are set at 80 pesos for foreigners, and unlike El Rosario, hiring a guide here is recommended.

Travelers can take an hour-long guided walk uphill through the park, or hop on a horse if you prefer not to walk.

Like El Rosario, time at the butterfly viewing areas is about 20 minutes so that all visitors get a chance to spend some time in the forest.

Although less visited and quieter, there is no shortage of monarch Mexico butterflies here. The trail is also less difficult as it is mostly flat for most of the hike.

Why come to Sierra Chincua? It has a lot of monarch butterflies — but receives fewer visitors than El Rosario, and has one of the easiest hikes of any sanctuary.

🚘 HOW TO GET TO SIERRA CHINCUA SANCTUARY

⚠️ Fair Warning: Getting here can be an adventure in itself!

Taxis from Angangueo can take you, and if you’re coming from Zitácuaro, you have a few options, but be prepared for a bit of a journey.

While it might cost more to travel from Zitácuaro because of the distance, once you’re there, the challenge of arriving will feel like it was all part of the adventure.

Just remember, there’s no easy way back to town waiting for you, so getting the phone number of your taxi driver is smart.

A much more convenient option is booking this tour to Sierra Chincua Butterfly Sanctuary with a local guide.

Hiring a guide enriches the experience and solves the transport issue, as some guides also offer rides back to your accommodation.

3. Piedra Herrada Butterfly Sanctuary in México State

💰 Price: 100 pesos (about $7 USD)  | ⏰ Hours : Daily, 9am to 4pm | 🥾 Note: Guide needed

Piedra Herrada is popular due to its proximity to major cities like Mexico City and Valle de Bravo.

From the entrance, the path leads you on a hike through the forest, lasting 45 minutes to an hour.

You’ll then reach the summit of the trail, where most butterflies gather.

Upon reaching the top, visitors are allowed a 15-minute stay to experience the butterflies before making their way back down.

What makes Piedra Herrada special is the road you take before you ascend.

On a sunny February and March afternoon, you might see thousands of monarchs descending from the mountain searching for water.

🦋 Pro Tips: This sanctuary is one of the closest sanctuaries to Mexico City , and is full of bus tours during the weekend, so try to avoid weekends if possible.

Also, avoid Wednesdays and Thursdays, the busiest days for school trips.

🚘 HOW TO GET TO PIEDRA HERRADA SANCTUARY

The Piedra Herrada Sanctuary is about two hours from Mexico City, and can be easily visited. In fact, it makes for a great Mexico City day trip option.

Another option is an overnight stay at Valle de Bravo , about 19 miles (30 km) away.

Whether coming from Mexico City or Valle de Bravo, you can rent a car , take a guided trip, book a tour, or arrange a taxi.

Always arrange a pick-up with your taxi driver, and never assume that taxis will be waiting for you when you finish your experience unless you plan this in advance.

4. Cerro Pelón Butterfly Sanctuary in México State

💰 Price: 80 pesos (about $5 USD)  | ⏰ Hours : Daily, 8am to 5pm | 🥾 Note: Guide needed, and many go via horse

Cerro Pelón, straddling Michoacán State and Estado de Mexico (Mexico State), is one of the least visited and untouched sanctuaries out of the four.

However, this particular flying monarch butterfly sanctuary is not for the faint of heart!

It requires physical fitness and a lot of preparation — so bring plenty of water and snacks, as no vendors are on-site.

Its challenging terrain, filled with steep, rocky paths, makes horseback rides a recommended way to explore.

It takes about two hours to get up and two hours to go down, so if you want to visit other sanctuaries, make this the last one on your list.

🚘 HOW TO GET TO CERRO PELÓN SANCTUARY

One unique option is to go to Macheros and stay at the Cerro Pelón Butterfly B&B .

Located about five minutes from the sanctuary’s entrance, it is one of the only places in Mexico where you can stay in the butterfly sanctuary.

Other options are renting a car , booking this guided tour , and trying to get there independently from Zitácuaro via public transportation.

To do this, you’ll use a combination of minibus and taxi. Of course, this can be a bit tricky, especially if you don’t speak at least some Spanish.

7 Things to Bring For Mexico Monarch Butterfly Watching

1. hiking shoes.

Durable hiking shoes are essential for you visit to any monarch butterfly reserve Mexico has.

The terrain varies from flat paths to steep, rocky trails, so quality hiking shoes provide the support and grip needed for a comfortable trek through the forests.

2. Warm Clothes

Despite Mexico’s generally warm climate, the microclimate in the monarch butterfly reserves can be quite cool, especially at higher elevations.

Warm, layered clothing is advisable to adjust comfortably to the changing temperatures throughout the day.

3. Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is key during your hike to the Mexico butterfly forests.

Bring a reusable water bottle to refill as needed. Many sanctuaries have refill stations, making it easier to keep water on hand without carrying excessive weight.

🏆 My recommendation is this Water-To-Go Bottle , which I own and use myself! Get 15% OFF your purchase with code SOLO15 .

As many know, Mexican water is not potable — meaning you can’t safely drink Mexican tap water.

This Water-To-Go Bottle has a three-stage built-in filter that ensures you’re always drinking clean water wherever you are.

Energy-boosting snacks like these are great for keeping your stamina up during the hike.

Nuts, energy bars, and fruit are lightweight, nutritious options that fit easily into your backpack.

Remember that necessities like water and food might not be available during your experience, so bring everything you need.

5. Bug Spray

Though the focus may be watching butterflies, other insects can be a nuisance while you experience the butterfly migration to Mexico.

A good bug spray like this one helps keep mosquitoes and other insects at bay, making your experience with the Mexican butterflies more enjoyable.

6. Sun Protection

Sun exposure can occur even in cooler forested areas, especially on clearer days. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are important to protect against UV rays.

7. Travel Insurance

Considering the nature of the activity and its location, travel insurance that covers outdoor activities is highly recommended.

🏆My recommendation? I love AND use SafetyWing Travel Insurance .

It provides peace of mind, covering everything from medical emergencies to trip cancellations, and more.

The Legend of the Monarch Butterflies of Mexico

In Mexico, many stories surround the monarch butterfly migration, showing how special these butterflies are to the people.

Some believe the butterflies are souls of family members who have died, and are coming back to visit.

Others think of them as spirits of the forest or as messengers from the Aztec and Mayan gods , connecting the heavens and the earth.
