Follow in the footsteps of Inspector Barnaby as you explore Causton, Midsomer Newton and more on the trail of the Midsomer Murders locations.

If you’re a fan of the Midsomer Murders books and TV series, you’ll know Midsomer County as the home of traditional pubs, village greens and Sunday afternoon cricket. You’ll also know of the improbable number of murders committed in strangely creative ways. Thankfully, the Midsomer Murders solved by DCI Barnaby are fictional, but the villages and market towns seen in each episode are not. These South Oxfordshire locations are the real stars of the show and you can easily explore them by following self-guide trails, or by taking a chauffeur driven guided tour. Pose for photos drinking a beer in Barnaby’s favourite pubs; see the shops he went to, the churches he visited and the bridges he crossed. Along the way you’ll discover filmed locations like Wallingford, Thame, Dorchester, Ewelme, Nettlebed, the Rotherfields, the Haseleys and Warborough; towns and villages every bit as wonderful as their fictional counterparts.

Midsomer Murders in Oxfordshire

Discover the various filming locations of the famous TV and book series Midsomer Murders; many of which were filmed in Oxfordshire.

Oxfordshire is an ideal place to follow in the footsteps of Inspector Barnaby of Causton CID, and fellow characters of the popular series, to explore Midsomer county; the home of traditional pubs, village greens, fetes and Sunday afternoon cricket. However, Midsomer is not as idyllic as it appears, as murder, kidnap and blackmail are all common crimes committed by the inhabitants of this fictional English county.

While many villages in Oxfordshire were featured in Midsomer Murders, five towns are particular favourites for the filming of the TV show. Henley-on-Thames , Wallingford , Dorchester-on-Thames, Thame and Watlington, are all home to a variety of different Midsomer Murder film locations, which can be explored with their very own Midsomer walking trails .

Henley-on-Thames :  In the episode, L ast Year’s Model , the Grade II listed Town Hall of Henley was used as the ‘Court House of Causton’. The Town Hall was also used as the ‘auction room’ in Black Book. Additionally, the Gabriel Machin butcher shop, which has existed in Henley since 1861, was featured in The Magician’s Nephew episode as a double for ‘Anton Thorneycroft’s butcher’. And the popular Royal Regatta, which takes place in Henley every year, became the Midsomer Regatta in Dead in the Water, which Barnaby and his wife visited for a picnic. Café Vinters, where Barnaby bought drinks in the Dawn Amongst the Dead Men is also located in Henley and was transformed into La Bodega, a restaurant and tapas bar.

Wallingford : Wallingford is the original location of Causton, home to main character Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and a real-life location with trails designed to take in the filming locations around the town and neighbouring areas. Wallingford’s most recent appearance was in ‘Breaking the Chain’ which featured the town’s Festival of Cycling and aired in January 2016.

Dorchester-on-Thames:  Dorchester-on-Thames, is known as one of the prettiest Midsomer county villages and a great place to stay for an authentic Midsomer stay. Choose between three historic Inns, which were all featured in past episodes. Dorchester is also home to ‘ The house in the woods ’, known today as Abbey’s Museum, which was the place where Barnaby’s wife met with the conservation group.

Watlington:  To find the ‘ Causton library ’, you have to visit Watlington and its very own library. In addition, Watlington is home to Calnans, which represented Dorset’s Family Butchers in Judgement. In the same episode, the Grade II listed Town Hall at the top of the High Street was used for the scene in which Joyce Barnaby is a judge in the Perfect Village Competition.

Thame : Thame has featured in many episodes and there are over 20 filming locations in the town centre. Notable among these are Thame Town Hall, used as Causton Town Hall in Shot at Dawn , Not in My Backyard , and Days of Misrule , and as Causton Arts Centre in The Maid in Splendour . Buttermarket was used in Vixen’s Run, Picture of Innocence, Midsomer Life and Dead in the Water . Market House was used in Vixen’s Run and Midsomer Life . Rumsey’s Chocolaterie (8 Upper High Street) was used extensively in Picture of Innocence as Madrigal’s Camera Shop. The Black Horse (11 Cornmarket) featured in Neil Dudgeon’s first episode, Death in the Slow Lane . The Spread Eagle and The Swan Hotels (Cornmarket) were used in Vixen’s Run and The Spread Eagle was also used as The Morecroft Hotel in Midsomer Life . Thame Museum was used in Secrets and Spies .

Pubs visited by Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby

  • The Argyll , a 17th-century pub, was visited by Barnaby & Jones to meet clinical psychiatrist Pru Plunkett.
  • The Six Bells , a 16th-century pub was frequently featured as the ‘Black Swan’.
  • The Black Horse , a 17th-century pub, was used in ‘Death in the Slow Lane’, the first episode featuring Neil Dudgeon as DCI Barnaby

Midsomer Murders Group Tour

Fans of the DCI Barnabys will know that this popular television drama takes place in one of the most picturesque corners of England, the fictional county of Midsomer. Characterized by its great country houses, traditional pubs, village greens and Sunday afternoon cricket, the apparently idyllic villages of Midsomer are also the scenes for some of the most evil, ingenious murders screened on TV.

  • The traditional market town of Wallingford, the original 'Causton', with its 9th Century streets, half-cobbled square and Elizabethan town hall. The first ever episode was filmed here. The local theatre doubles as Causton theatre and Barnaby is often seen walking in the Market Place or driving across Wallingford Bridge.
  • Dorchester-on-Thames, one of the prettiest Midsomer villages, where the medieval Abbey church, coaching inns and post office are all locations.
  • Thame, often used as a general backdrop, to see the Town Hall which appears as Causton Town Hall, plus a local hotel and tea room which also feature in the series.
  • Stonor House, one of the oldest manor houses in England.
  • Historic Mapledurham House and Watermill, now the only working watermill on the Thames, where visitors can enjoy a traditional cream tea made with flour from the watermill. Filming has taken place here twice recently.
  • Great Haseley and church, which has been used for wedding and funeral scenes, plus the village hall, possibly the most filmed location throughout the series.
  • Watlington, reputedly the smallest town in England whose library features as Causton library.
  • Henley on Thames, a much-loved tourist destination which has featured in several episodes. See the numerous shops and streets which have been used as well as the Town Hall, Bridge and Market Square.
  • Greys Court, a 16th century mansion which has appeared as both a monastery and a priory.
  • Warborough where fans will recognise the familiar houses, village green and traditional Six Bells pub which all appear in the opening credits.

Former Midsomer Murders stars – where are they now?

The itv crime drama first premiered in 1997 .

Split image of John Nettles, Jane Wymark and Toby Jones

Midsomer Murders has been a regular fixture on our screens for 27 years, introducing fans to a host of unforgettable characters like DCI Barnaby and his sidekick DS Gavin Troy. But, with a such a long and successful run on ITV , viewers have been forced to say goodbye to beloved cast members.

Wondering what they're up to now? From John Nettles to Jane Wymark and Jason Hughes, here's what Midsomer's alumni have been up to since leaving the village...

john nettles midsomer

John Nettles

John Nettles was the village's original detective, Tom Barnaby. After leading the series for 14 years, however, the fan favourite waved goodbye in 2011.

Speaking to The Telegraph about his decision, John noted: "I never thought when we were filming the pilot 'The Killings at Badger's Drift' in 1996 that I would go on to film so many episodes. It has been a joy to be involved in such a long-running series with so many good actors and great storylines. It's the end of an era for me.

"I suddenly realised that I'm going to be the oldest detective in the business now that David Jason has thrown off the mantle. But it was a very difficult decision to make," he added.

"I'll have been doing Midsomer Murders for 14 years by the time Barnaby leaves. I've formed familial ties with the people involved in the show and they will be hard to break. It's always wise to leave people wanting more, rather than be booed off the stage because you bored them."

Following his departure from the show, John has starred in The Toast of London and Poldark . He's also lent his voice to docuseries Devon and Cornwall and My Unique B&B , serving as a narrator.

Away from the cameras, John will celebrate his 30th wedding anniversary with his wife,  Cathryn Sealey, next year. He's also a proud dad to his daughter, Emma Nettles.

Jane Wymark in France in 2019.

Jane Wymark

Jane Wymark appeared as DCI Barnaby's wife, Joyce, before exiting the show in 2011.

At the time, fans speculated that Jane had been asked to leave the drama to coincide with John Nettle's storyline, the actress said she was ready for a different role.

"I'm relieved that I don't have to be the nicest person in the world anymore!" she told Birmingham Mail . "That's a heavy burden to carry. I want to be completely evil now, a really bad person with no redeeming features and a terribly good cook!"

Jane noted: "John and I have been talking about him leaving for a long time, it hasn't come out of nowhere. And I agree, enough is enough. I am fond of Joyce but she is very limiting. Now I get to do different things."

Free to explore new avenues, Jane has since appeared in the miniseries Jo , and the National Theatre's 2014 production of Medea .

Laura Howard, John Nettles and Jane Wymark

Laura Howard

Like her TV parents, Laura Howard left Midsomer Murders in 2011. Cast as Tom and Joyce's daughter Cully Barnaby, the actress bowed out of the programme in season 13 when her character tied the knot with Simon Dixon and left the village to pursue an acting career in London.

"Cully's not the wildest character, but it's been lovely playing her," Laura told the Evening Standard in 2012. Asked about the reasons behind her exit, she replied: "I was 19 when we filmed the first episode and 30 when we shot the wedding last summer."

A regular fixture on our screens, following Midsomer Murders you may have spotted her in Doctors , Casualty and Call The Midwife . According to IMDB , her most recent role was as DCI Smith in a 2023 episode of COBRA .

Daniel Casey in Midsomer Murders

Daniel Casey

Daniel Casey is famed for playing Tom Barnaby's original sidekick DS Gavin Troy in the first seven seasons of Midsomer Murders . "I was just aware I didn't want to stay with the same thing for too long and I wanted to branch out," the actor revealed to Saga .

Following his departure, Daniel briefly returned as Gavin in season 11 for the wedding of Tom's daughter Cully. Since leaving the village, Daniel has landed roles in Inspector George Gently , Casualty , and most notably EastEnders , in which he portrayed Tom Bailey.

Jason Hughes pictured by the coast in Cannes in 2012

Jason Hughes

Joining the show as Sergeant Ben Jones in season nine, Jason Hughes left Midsomer Murders in season 15. After returning for a guest appearance in season 19, DS Benjamin Jones was officially gone for good.

In the years that followed, Jason has starred in Death in Paradise , Marcella , The Pact and Save The Cinema .

Gwilym Lee at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Preview Party in 2023

In 2013, Gwilym Lee made his debut as DCI Barnaby's new sergeant, DS Charlie Nelson, a role that he would play for the next three years.

After waving goodbye to the ITV series, Gwilym has continued to thrive, appearing as Samuel Castell in Jamestown , Grigory "Grigor" Dymov in The Great , and Brian May in the Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody .

midsomer murders places to visit

Toby Jones enjoyed a short stint in Midsomer Murders , appearing as Dan Peterson in four episodes of the hit show between 1999 and 2000.

Revered as one of Britain's finest actors, Toby has since appeared in major film franchises including Harry Potter and The Hunger Games .

Among his endless TV credits, the 57-year-old has featured in Sherlock , The Long Shadow and Mr Bates vs The Post Office , to name a few.
