MSR Hubba Hubba 2 Tent Review

The long-time crowd favorite MSR Hubba Hubba 2 tent has had a makeover, and there’s a lot to love about this newest iteration. Some of the most noticeable changes include a significantly lower weight, an updated color scheme that meshes nicely with natural surroundings, and a reimagined ventilation design. This lightweight tent is one of our favorites from our list of the Best Backpacking Tents for those looking for a durable shelter that provides ample protection in inclement weather.

LIGHTWEIGHT

At 3 lbs. 4 oz., the Hubba Hubba is pretty light for a freestanding tent of its size – especially when divided between two hikers. There are lighter tents out there, but the Hubba Hubba provides more protection from the elements than many others.

We’re big fans of MSR gear in general because they’ve always designed their products with longevity in mind, and the Hubba Hubba is no exception. Every inch of this tent is constructed with quality materials and craftsmanship that will last for many years and thousands of trail miles if treated with care.

msr hubba tour 2

GOOD VENTILATION

The Hubba Hubba is designed with less mesh than a lot of other tents, but we still find the ventilation to be very well thought out. Large mesh windows at the head and foot allow air to circulate over you as you sleep, and a big section of mesh at the peak of the tent vents out warm air and moisture to help keep you cool and dry inside. The vestibules on the rain fly feature dual zippers which allow you to open up the top and deploy a kickstand vent on particularly toasty nights.

msr hubba tour 2

EXCELLENT WEATHER PROTECTION

The rainbow shape of the Hubba Hubba is advantageous in wet and windy weather. This structure means there’s less surface area along the spine to catch gusts of wind and it leaves little room for water to pool up on the fly. One of our favorite details of the Hubba Hubba is the gutter that’s designed into the vestibule doors. This little feature allows you to open up the tent after a rainy night without dumping water into the tent because it instead flows down these gutters.

msr hubba tour 2

GREAT POCKETS

The pockets are really well placed in the Hubba Hubba. Large tech friendly pockets at the ends (they include little ports for charging/headphone cables) are perfect for storing your phone, stashing a map, and keeping extra layers – like gloves or a hat – close at hand for chilly nights. There are also smaller pockets at the peak that are nice for creating ambient lighting with your headlamp or keeping items you don’t want to squash (like sunglasses) out of the way.

msr hubba tour 2

A BIT EXPENSIVE

A quality backpacking tent is going to cost you a pretty penny, and the price of the Hubba Hubba – while high – is about average for a high-quality two-person freestanding tent.

msr hubba tour 2

HEADROOM IS LACKING

The pole structure of the Hubba Hubba includes one long spine with two Y-shaped segments at the ends and a central cross pole that pulls out the head room in the center. This means you get some pretty good head space in the middle of the tent, but there’s no structure pulling out the sidewalls at the head and foot. As a result, there’s not much space to sit up without your head touching the tent walls. Not the biggest deal in the world, but it’s a slight knock to comfort – especially when sharing the space with another hiker.

msr hubba tour 2

Bottom line

The lightweight MSR Hubba Hubba 2 is built with high-quality materials and exceptional attention to detail. Its durable design will hold up to several years of adventuring, so it’s a good value. The Hubba Hubba has been among our top backpacking tent picks for as long as we can remember, and we think it’s a great option for anyone looking for a two-person shelter that’s easy to set up and has excellent weather protection.

Forced to spend outside time inside? The MSR Hubba Tour 2 Tent Review is an adventure touring tent for those bad weather days.

MSR Hubba Tour 2 Review

New for 2018, MSR built the Hubba Tour 2 to take bike touring, mountaineering, and general adventure camping. Specifically, it’s for when bad weather forces you to spend multiple days inside your tent. I tested the tent with a companion in high winds on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and during a rainstorm while on a climbing trip in Smith Rock, Ore.

Designed for two people, the MSR Hubba Tour 2 has a durable, waterproof “Xtreme Shield” coating. It sets up easily while maintaining a dry interior and is über spacious.

In short: The MSR’s Hubba Tour 2 tent is one of the most spacious tents I’ve ever tested for its weight. And it makes foul-weather setup a breeze. It serves as the perfect solution for adventure tourers and mountaineers seeking a comfortable place to hang out, change clothes, or store gear.

MSR Hubba Tour 2 Tent

MSR’s tent answers the needs of adventurers looking for cover for foul-weather days and is light enough to carry into the backcountry.

msr hubba tour 2

Its enclosed vestibule serves as a convenient transition zone between interior and exterior.  And altogether, the tent weighs 4 pounds 13 ounces. It provides a 32-square-foot floor area and has a 25-square-foot vestibule. Plus, the tent can be stripped down to a “fast and light” weight of 4 pounds 7 ounces – including the footprint.

At these weights, the Hubba Tour 2 is far from ultralight. But as an all-around tent, it offers the durability many desire for car camping at a weight that easily transitions into a backpack.

Xtreme Shield: MSR Hubba Tour 2

The Hubba Tour 2 combines an “Xtreme Shield” rainfly and DWR-treated canopy, both made of 20-denier ripstop nylon.

To understand what Xreme Shield means, I took a tour of the MSR factory.

MSR Hubba Tour 2 Review

It turns out MSR did away with taped seams on the rainfly and reverted to woven hydrophobic fabric. This solved the issue of fabric becoming “sticky” and degrading after long-term storage.

MSR claims its proprietary fabric is an upgrade against its previous iterations, holding its own against high-end competitors in the brand’s tests. In my testing, it provided adequate protection from the elements.

Stay Dry While Pitching

I also found the $650 Hubba Tour 2 is ideal to set up in rain or snow. The design keeps the interior dry during pitching. With all the doors zipped shut, the tent body is enough to keep out water even in a rainstorm while clipping exterior poles. Then add the rainfly for complete coverage.

Its exoskeleton frame and unified rainfly/body easily set up with one sturdy aluminum 7000 series pole. While remaining in one piece, it breaks out into a double-V shape, forming two triangular anchors on either side of the main tent body. A top cross-pole stabilizes the door opposite the vestibule.

The vestibule itself sets up with a separate aluminum pole. Slide it through to make a large hoop shape. Then, stake it out to stand it up.

MSR Hubba Tour 2 Review

Although I’m typically fond of freestanding tents due to frequent visits to challenging alpine locations, the need to stake out the vestibule didn’t bother me in this case. Anchoring it with a large rock will do just fine in environments where staking is impossible.

Handling High Winds: Hubba Tour 2

I received this tent just in time for a camping trip to Cape Lookout National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, notorious for its unexpected weather conditions and exceedingly high wind gusts.

A particularly powerful windstorm challenged us during one setup. But once staked (with sand stakes, purchased separately) and guyed out, the tent held its own – albeit with a little sag where the wind barraged the vestibule side.

msr hubba tour 2

The wind maintained its strength through the entire weekend, but I never had to redo a single stake or guyline. The tent proved to be an exceptionally comfortable place to hang out and escape the elements. And the partial floor feature of the vestibule was perfect during a two-person card game when we were hesitant to lay the cards down on the sand.

The only negative I found was the vestibule being compressed downward during the high wind. MSR could improve the tent by adding another guyline or two to strengthen the vestibule rigging.

msr hubba tour 2

When the wind finally ceased on the last day, we were concerned about the inability to remove the built-in rainfly during warm conditions. But opening all three doors and the two vents made for a comfortable napping area with a nice breeze, even when the temperature reached nearly 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rain Review and Impressions: Hubba Tour 2 Tent

On a climbing trip to Smith Rock, Ore., the tent served as the perfect companion. We had lovely conditions the first day. But rain on the second relegated us to the tent. During the deluge, we found the vestibule to be a comfortable hangout area that kept our gear dry at the same time.

After spending most of the day inside the tent during rain, I was impressed to find very little condensation. Opening the doors and vents kept the interior very dry, even with two adults breathing inside on a cool day in the rain.

Interior glow-in-the-dark zippers proved extremely helpful when searching for the door during midnight pee runs. Multiple gear storage pockets, and two easy-access entrances, kept me from climbing over my partner in the middle of the night.

After two big trips across two months of testing, my climbing partner and I decided the tent was a favorite for expeditions in inclement weather. The ability to hunker down and escape the weather in comfort truly enhances the outdoor experience.

If you’re looking for a touring tent with gear storage space that’s light enough for the backcountry, this one’s worth considering. And despite its hefty $650 price tag, the Hubba Tour 2 is worth the investment. If treated well, it should provide many years of comfortable respite.

MSR Hubba Tour 2 Review: The Definitive Adventure Motorcycle Tent

Designed for motorcyclists, by the motorcyclists at MSR, the Hubba Tour 2 was meant for two-wheeled adventures.

msr hubba tour 2

Camping and motorcycling go together like bread and butter: a great combo, but too much of one and not the other can lead to a lousy breakfast, or in this case, a lost weekend. You don’t want your kit to become a burden or be too cumbersome. Setting it up and breaking it down should be a no-brainer, and more often than not, less is more when it comes to camp gear. So, choosing the right equipment for your motorcycle adventures is vital. Items need to be light, pack easily, accommodate you, and often the person you’re riding with as well. Designed to house two motorcyclists (or cyclists) and all their gear, the new MSR Hubba Tour 2 is the ultimate two-person tent for two-wheeled travelers. According to MSR, it was the motorcyclists in the office that designed the tent.

The Hubba Tour 2 is a three-season tent explicitly designed for bike-packing and motorcycling expeditions. When packed, the tent and accompanying rainfly/vestibule weighs just five-pounds, four-ounces. Featuring a fast pitch exoskeleton and rainfly, the Hubba Tour 2 takes only a few minutes to assemble, allowing weary travelers a quick and comfortable escape from the elements. The cavernous vestibule is the perfect place to store wet or dirty riding gear and offers additional shelter should you not want to be cooped up inside the tent itself. Like its Hubba brethren, the Tour 2 has a zippered door on either side, as well as ample gear lofts and pockets and an internal glow-in-the-dark zipper pull. The rainfly is made of 20-denier, high-tenacity ripstop nylon that’s Durashield polyurethane- and silicone-coated, making it both durable and waterproof.

Who They’re For:

Built to accommodate two self-supported motorcycle travelers, the Hubba Tour 2 is 38-inches tall at its peak and features a floor layout that is 88 x 52 inches. The vestibule is large enough to house two helmets, riding gear and luggage removed from the motorcycles. In addition to a weight of just five pounds, four-ounces, the Hubba Tour 2 is only 17-inches long and seven-inches-around when packed, designed with motorcycle saddlebags in mind.

Watch Out For:

The one-piece rainfly/vestibule requires campers to secure the outer shell of the tent using the included stakes and draw lines. This task can be difficult to accomplish when camped on hard surfaces, or sandy beaches. And without the inclusion of the optional footprint, the vestibule is only partially floored, which means dirt and debris can find its way into the tent. Our tip? Pick up the footprint.

Alternatives:

The Obi LS tent from Nemo Equipment offers similar three-season shelter and two-person capacity as the Hubba Tour 2. Tipping the scales at just three pounds, eight ounces, when packed, it is considerably lighter, and with its dual vestibule setup, offers a similar amount of space with an 83 x 50-inch footprint and a 40.2-inch height at its peak. The vestibule space, however, is substantially smaller, and may not store as much motorcycle gear.

We traveled south of the border into Baja California with the Hubba Tour 2 strapped to the tail rack of an Indian Scout. Previously, the two of us had used the predecessor to this tent, MSR’s Hubba Hubba NX. We had, however, struggled to store all of our gear at night safely, and we’re excited at the prospect of expanded vestibule space. Pitching the Tour 2 was a simple and straightforward as we had anticipated, allowing one of us to prepare our air mattress while the other pitched the tent and fashioned it to the ground with the included stakes. The vestibule was, as we’d hoped, a welcome addition to the shelter, and allowed us to safely store our helmets, bags and riding gear at night.

Furthermore, we used this space to boil water and make coffee in the morning, keeping us dry when a light rain rolled over. Taking down the tent was as easy as its assembly, and again allowed one of us to pack up the remainder of our gear while the other sorted out the tent. The glow-in-the-dark zippers and expanded interior storage were also positive improvements we hadn’t known we needed until we had them.

MSR-Moto-Tent-Gear-Patrol-Slide-4

The Hubba Tour 2 is the perfect choice when traveling with a partner, allowing the allocation of gear between two bikes so that no one person is packing too much. The exoskeleton construction makes putting up and taking down the tent a one-person task, and the expanded vestibule provides much-needed storage for two travelers and all of their motorcycle gear. With the incorporation of a footprint and a means to secure stakes to the ground, the Hubba Tour 2 might be the last tent we’ll ever need.

What Others Are Saying:

• “The MSR’s Hubba Tour 2 tent is one of the most spacious tents I’ve ever tested for its weight. And it makes foul-weather setup a breeze. It serves as the perfect solution for adventure tourers and mountaineers seeking a comfortable place to hang out, change clothes or store gear.” – Amanda Ellis Gear Junkie

MSR Hubba Tour 2 Tent Review

The new MSR Hubba Tour 2 is a lightweight tent designed for longer-term adventure touring  — think epic bikepacking or motorcycle touring trips that cover varied terrain ranging in duration from a week to a year.

The MSR Hubba Tour Tent isn’t exactly an ultralight backpacking tent and it’s definitely not a typical camping tent — it’s a specialized hybrid tent. It’s based upon the popular MSR Hubba Hubba NX tent but it includes a massive built-in vestibule and a design that lets you pitch the tent in the rain without getting the inside wet while you’re doing it.

To get us a closer look at this interesting new design, MSR sent Man Makes Fire a review unit. Here is what we learned:

MSR Hubba Tour Tent Review: Initial Impressions

This photo shows the MSR Hubba Tour 2 Tent setup outside on a sunny day.

While the MSR Hubba Tour 2 Tent is relatively lightweight, hardcore backpackers might scoff at the weight, which is about 4 lbs 14 oz for the trail weight in the 2-person Hubba Tour. To put this in perspective, this is the approximate trail weight of a standard entry-level-to-midrange backpacking tent. Lots of backpackers take 4-plus pound tents backpacking because they’re affordable, durable, free-standing and easy to use — but the Hubba Tour 2 does it with a massive vestibule.

This photo shows the vestibule of the MSR Hubba Tour 2 tent.

When the weather is great, we hardly think about vestibules, but what happens when the weather turns bad for a couple of days in a row? Suddenly the vestibule coverage area takes on a whole new meaning.

The point is, the MSR Hubba Tour could work well for backpackers with a dog or for extended trips where a bit more protection from the elements would be handy for gear storage — or even letting your socks or shorts dry without stringing it all up inside your sleeping area. You could use an ultralight tarp with or without trekking poles, of course, but adventure touring when you’re covering vast distances means you might need to choose a campsite without trees — and you certainly don’t need trekking poles if you’re on a bike.

MSR Hubba Tour Tent Review: Made for Roads, Trails and Waterways

MSR says the Hubba Tour is designed directly for the growing adventure touring community. It’s built for bikepackers or cycle tourers riding ultra, backroads, fat bikes or expedition bikes, as well as canoeing tourers and cross-country tourers who cover roads, trails and waterways for weeks at a time. Obviously these are great uses for the MSR Hubba Tour lineup, but it’s also light enough for the occasional backpacking trip and durable enough for the occasional car camping trip: I’m not saying it’s the best backpacking tent or the best camping tent , but it does have a versatile cross-purpose design.

This photo shows the inside of the MSR Hubba Tour 2 Tent.

The best two features of the Hubba Tour is the exoskeleton pole system that lets you pitch the tent in the rain without getting the interior wet — and, of course, the gear-covering vestibule.

Speaking of this vestibule, touring adventurers often spend weeks away from most people but occasionally they cross paths with more populated, shared camping areas . . . sometimes you want to tuck your gear out of sight when you leave the immediate vicinity of your tent, and the vestibule gives you plenty of space for this.

MSR Hubba Tour Tent Review: Design and Setup

The primary tent pole system is all shock-corded together. This means you pull it out and start fitting the high-quality ultralight aluminum poles together to form the basic shape — and you can’t get it wrong. Each corner of the sleeping area of the tent has a grommet for the end of a leg pole, and the main pole arcs over the top. Next, you clip the tent onto the poles, raising the tent and giving it volume. The Hubba Tour does not have a traditionally separate rain fly, but the main sleeping area has its own ceiling body, which has a DWR coating. It hangs down through removable support connections from the rain fly.

The vestibule requires a separate-but-simple pole system that creates a half-circle. This vestibule material is connected to the main sleeping area of the tent and the half-circle pole system gives the end of the vestibule shape. In order to keep it standing upright, you do have to stake it down. So, technically, this isn’t exactly freestanding but it’s darn close.

This image shows the MSR Hubba Tour pole and grommet connections.

There is a large door to the vestibule and then another door to enter the main tent. The other side of the tent includes its own door and small vestibule so you can enter and exit the tent from either side. This is great for calls of nature in the middle of the night — and it’s great if your vestibule turns into a full-on gear garage.

MSR includes two vents, which will help with air flow during bad weather or hot weather. Either way, you’ll likely want to prop these vents fully open. For additional air flow and ventilation, you can open the two exterior doors all the way, leave them partially unzipped or just partially unzipped near the tops. This will give you cross-breeze ventilation and help moisture escape — the two doors to the main body of the tent have triangular mesh vents, too.

This photo shows the MSR Hubba Tour 2 Tent vent from the outside, opened.

Personally, I would like to see a bit more mesh on the interior doors — I’d even take a slight weight hit to have fully meshed doors that could also zip closed and remain mostly waterproof.

MSR Hubba Tour Tent: Plenty of Pockets and Gear Loops

Part of the value of the Hubba Tour 2 Tent is in the gear storage thought that went into the design. You get a couple of loops for hanging light gear in the vestibule, as well as a partial groundsheet to keep your gear off the ground. There are several mesh pockets inside the tent, which will let you store your smartphone, headlamps and odds and ends.

The main sleeping area of the Hubba Tour 2 is 88″ x 52″ . . . and it’s a full rectangle. A lot of two-person tents taper together at the feet, and since I like foot room, sticking with a real rectangle is nice. In addition, if you like to use a wider lightweight sleeping pad , two such pads will easily fit side-by-side in the Hubba Tour 2.

MSR Hubba Tour Tents: MSR’s New Coating

The Hubba Tour series of tents use an MSR-exclusive “Xtreme Shield” waterproofing coating on the breathable 20D rainfly and 30D floor. MSR says this coating is more durable and will last three times longer than standard coatings.

This photo shows the MSR Tour 2 Tent packed into its included stuff sack next to a water bottle as a size comparison.

Will this coating truly last longer than other waterproofing systems? Hard to say, but MSR seems pretty proud of its Xtreme Shield . . . and in my experience, MSR hasn’t been the kind of company that has had trouble with hyperbole — all of MSR’s gear is usually excellent and durable.

All-in-all, the MSR Hubba Tour 2 is the sort of tent that makes you want to start planning an epic ride or combo trip — whatever the weather. If you get thoroughly soaked on a ride, you can set up the tent and remove your wet clothes under the cover of the vestibule without introducing a bunch of water to your sleeping area. You even have room for motorcycle boots, helmets, jackets and pants. The overall construction is durable. Everything fits together exactly as it should. It’s easy to pitch and easy to tighten through the built-in straps and guylines. Fit and finish is impeccable. For the right kind of adventurer who can really use a roomy vestibule, the MSR Hubba Tour could be the perfect new hybrid tent. Highly recommended.

One note: If you already have an MSR Hubba or Elixir backpacking tent, MSR offers an add-on “gear shed” that connects to the side of the Hubba or Elixir 1, 2 and 3-person Hubba and Elixir tents. Aptly called the MSR Gear Shed , it will create a 26.5-square-foot covered vestibule and add about 1 lbs 13 oz to your tent trail weight. Any downsides? Setup is not nearly as simple and you’re far more likely to get the interior of your tent wet if you have to set it up during a rainstorm, especially if you’re already cold and tired. With the 2-person Hubba Hubba NX , you’ll have a similar overall weight if you add the Gear Shed — but you’ll be quite a bit heavier with an Elixir (which is a heavier tent to start with). On the plus side, you can save about $90 by ordering the MSR Gear Shed with a Hubba Hubba NX 2  instead of the dedicated Hubba Tour 2 . . . and you’ll still get the massive vestibule option for adventure touring . . . plus end up with an MSR fan-favorite all-around backpacking tent in the Hubba Hubba NX 2. Something to think about if you lean more toward backpacking but still want plenty of gear space.

The single-wall Hubba Tour 2 was one our favorite tents of 2018 , largely thanks to its ginormous, 25-square-foot vestibule with a partial floor. “Four of us could sit around and play a game of cards in there,” a tester said after a rainy weekend trip to Mississippi’s Black Creek Wilderness. The tent itself has 32 square feet of floor space, slightly larger than most two-person tents, and it has six additional stash pockets to keep gear tidy; all in all, it’s a neat-freak’s dream. The Hubba Tour 2 is now 36 percent off at Moosejaw , bringing the price down to $416.99.

MSR Hubba Hubba 2-Person Tent Review

A s an outdoor enthusiast and admitted gear nerd, I tend to have at least a few different versions of every type of gear: there’s the fancy option, the cheaper alternative, and usually at least one in between. But ever since I sold my REI Quarter Dome circa 2013, I’ve been lacking a Goldilocks tent. My options for the last several years have been a Zpacks Hexamid Solo (14.7 oz, $599 with bathtub groundsheet, definitely in the “fancy” category) or a budget-friendly Alps Mountaineering 2-person Zephyr (5 lbs 11 oz, $199).

The Hexamid is amazing when I’m flying solo and covering big/fast miles, but I can’t take it when I’m backpacking with my partner. The Zephyr was a terrific shelter when I lived and worked outside, but it is very heavy and clunky for backpacking trips. So I was tickled to have an opportunity to test something in between: the MSR Hubba Hubba 2-Person Backpacking Tent .

MSR Hubba Hubba 2 At-A-Glance

MSRP : $479.95 Minimum Trail Weight : 2 lbs 14 oz Packed Weight : 3 lbs 4 oz Interior Peak Height : 40 in Number of Doors : 2 Materials: 20D ripstop nylon 1200mm DuraSheild™, polyurethane & silicone (rainfly); 20D ripstop nylon & DWR, 10D polyester micro-mesh (canopy); 20D ripstop nylon 1200mm DuraSheild™, polyurethane & DWR (floor)

Intended Use

The Hubba Hubba 2 is designed for three-season backpacking in all conditions. It can comfortably sleep one or two people.

Circumstances of Review

I tested the Hubba Hubba on multiple High Country backpacking trips in western North Carolina throughout the summer and into early fall. Conditions ranged from warm and sunny to very cold and wet.

msr hubba tour 2

Very, very wet. No leaking, no splashing, no problems.

Key Features

Per MSR, the Hubba Hubba has the following features:

  • “Easton Syclone Poles: Advanced aerospace composite materials make poles virtually indestructible in challenging and windy conditions.”
  • “Full-Featured Rainfly: Two large StayDry doors with built-in rain gutters and kickstand vents for extra ventilation.”
  • “Tech-Friendly Pockets: Cable ports on all pockets for easy cord management.”
  • “Durable Details: Reinforced patches, stitching at guy points and locking anodized stake loop grommets for extra strength.”

MSR Hubba Hubba 2 Pros

Easy set-up and take-down.

The name Hubba Hubba comes from the fact that the tent poles have two multi-way “hubs.” You can see one of the hubs in the photo below; it looks like a small triangle, serving as the connection point between the long part of the pole that runs lengthwise over the tent and the two parts of the pole that meet the ground. It’s like that on the other side, too. This is actually all one pole! There’s also a small, separate pole running horizontally over the tent.

This creative “hub” design provides excellent structural integrity without requiring a bunch of poles (and, thus, weight). The symmetrical design also makes setup fast, intuitive, and easy to do solo or with another person. Clips on the tent canopy easily fasten over the poles, and the rain fly easily clips into the poles over the tent body.

Big Vestibules

Have you ever been camping with a tent that doesn’t have big vestibules? I have. And let me tell you, I will never do it again. The Hubba Hubba has two generous vestibules that provide ample space to put your shoes on and store your gear safe from the elements.

The vestibule-door combo is also great because it’s easy to lie in the tent and look out at the horizon. Whether you want to enjoy the sunset from the comfort of your sleeping bag or see whatever you can see on a cozy morning in your tent, the Hubba Hubba provides great views. It’s  The rain fly door also wraps up very nicely with no drag and no loose ends.

Big vestibules.

I have to admit that I may not have the most accurate lens through which to evaluate spaciousness, as I am a fairly small person. But I can say that I’ve slept in a lot of different two-person tents, and I certainly have had cramped experiences, even as a small person. So I can confidently say that the Hubba Hubba feels plenty spacious. My partner and I slept very comfortably and still had space at our feet for miscellaneous stuff we didn’t want in the vestibules. The rectangular floor really does its job.

msr hubba tour 2

Plenty of space.

Nice Details and Great Ventilation

Overall, I think the details on the Hubba Hubba are well-designed and well-positioned. The overhead gear loft pockets on the canopy are big enough, but not so big that they droop and make it hard to quickly grab things. The doors have highly effective built-in rain gutters and kickstand vents for extra airflow when you’re all sealed up.

I never got a chance to sleep in the Hubba Hubba without the rainfly due to extreme humidity, even when I had nice weather. But I do think the stargazing mesh would make for great stargazing.

msr hubba tour 2

The outdoor gear industry has the potential to make a big impact on responsible stewardship. So, as always, I checked out where MSR stands on social and environmental responsibility. MSR is a founding member of the Outdoor Industry Association Sustainability Working Group, and they are expressly committed to minimizing the social and environmental impact of their products. You can read about this in their Manufacturing and Social Responsibility Report .

MSR Hubba Hubba 2 Cons

Footprint sold separately.

Honestly, the only thing that I wasn’t thrilled about was the fact that you have to purchase a footprint separately. I know this isn’t uncommon, but I don’t really understand it. Technically, no, I don’t need a footprint for the tent to work. But it’s a good idea to use one to ensure maximum durability of your gear. Using a footprint can also reduce condensation—which, in my neck of the woods, is critical. I think selling footprints separately is actually a deterrent from buying one for a lot of people, and I wish MSR—and a lot of other companies as well—would just include it in the whole package.

msr hubba hubba 2

Overall I think the MSR Hubba Hubba 2 is a terrific investment. It’s simple and efficient, reasonably lightweight, and quick to pitch in bad weather. So far, I haven’t had any issues with durability. If you’re in the market for a high-quality, freestanding tent for three-season backpacking, the Hubba Hubba will be worth your dollars.

Nice review. Try Tyvek or 6mil plastic for a ground sheet. Much cheaper. Make sure it is 3-4 inches smaller on all sides of your tent. Always make sure your tent has a chance to dry before packing it away to prevent the build-up of mold. If you must pack it wet, make sure to dry it asap.

This extra roomy two person tent has an extended vestibule making it absolutely perfect for long backpacking trips or cycle touring, the extra space and versatility make it a comfortable home from home when you've got extra kit or equipment with you. To keep your essential kit dry the floor of the vestibule has a built in groundsheet at one end.

To access the porch area, you get a huge door that can be pinned out of the way during warmer weather or while transporting kit. Once inside, the large porch allows you to store various bits of bike kit, paniers, rucksacks and a pet. At the peak of the tent you'll find yourself with 90cm of room, more than enough to sit upright and just about enough for a standard sized male to crouch while cooking or assembling your sleeping area.

Setting up is a quick and hassle free experience thanks to MSR's extensive tent knowledge. The inner can be left attached to the waterproof outer to avoid getting a wet sleeping area if setting up during rainfall, a useful feature for longer periods of time. Simply lie the tent flat, attach pegs to each corner and tighten with the included straps. Insert the exoskeleton poles using the large hooks, pop the pole above the porch into it's sleeve and tension. You're then good to go!

A large mesh porch door allows you to let the light and breeze through but keep the creepy crawlies out, whiler a large selection of interior pockets store cycling, walking or travelling gear. If you've just come back from a soaking wet ride and need to separate your dry and wet gear, these pockets really come into their own. Further storage is taken care of by a gear loft, this is a piece of mesh fabric that sits on the underside of the roof inside your sleeping area for small bits and bobs such as a phone, keys, snacks or clothes. It also features a zipped compartment for more valuable items.

The outer fabric is made from a super light yet durable ripstop material which is silicone coated to keep further weight down. The floor is slightly thicker and is designed to withstand slightly more abuse.

How to Care for Your Tent

We know that purchasing a tent is a big investment, that’s why we have such a wide range of options to suit different activities, weather conditions and people, allowing you to choose the perfect one for you. Taking care of your brand new tent can be the difference between heading out for an adventure in the mountains, or having to fork out for a hefty repair bill, or even worse, another replacement tent. Below are our best tips to care for your tent.

Before even leaving the shop (or online basket) with your tent, consider a footprint. A footprint is a large water-resistant piece of material which sits underneath your tent to protect it from sharp rocks and wet ground; if this footprint gets damaged, it’s easy to replace and doesn’t cost a fortune; if your tent groundsheet gets damaged, you’ll have to spend at least twice the amount for a repair or replacement.

Don’t Abuse the Poles

The chances are your poles are made from individual aluminium sections connected by elastic; when you come to remove the poles from the tent, don’t pull them out. The best way to remove poles from their sleeve is to place the pole end against your hip and pull the fabric towards you. If you simply attempt to pull the pole out, they’ll disconnect inside, the elastic will stretch and then spring back, potentially trapping the fabric of your tent between the pole sections.

You might also be tempted to flick the poles out so that the elastic snaps them into place in a quickfire fashion. However, this is far from ideal, as if the poles don’t align when they meet, you can easily damage or weaken the end of the pole, leading to future failure which is usually on the wettest and windiest nights!

Collapse Poles From the Centre

When your poles are safely removed from the sleeve, collapse them from the centre to avoid stretching the elastic.

Stuff, Don’t Fold

You were probably told when you were in the Scouts or doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award that the best way to pack your tent away is to neatly fold it into a rectangle, the width of your storage bag, roll it around the poles and pegs and then put it all in the stuffsack. However, whilst very neat and tidy, this method of packing can create permanent creases in the fabric, weaken the waterproofing and eventually split the fabric of your tent. The best solution is to simply stuff the tent fabric into the storage bag, just like you would a sleeping bag, and pack the poles separately. Make sure to leave and end or corner at the top, so that you can easily peg it out if your next campsite is windy. The poles normally have their own stuffsack so they can be packed separately, strapped to the outside of your pack or stored inside, allowing the tent fabric to be compressed for efficient packing.

Store it Dry

Let’s assume you’ve been out with your tent and the weather has been a little on the damp side. You’ve packed your tent away when wet and now you’re back home in the warm and dry with a nice of cup of tea reflecting on your latest adventure. But what about your poor soggy tent? The worst thing you can do is to leave it packed away wet, mildew will grow and eventually rot the tent, rendering it useless. As soon as you’ve finished that cup of tea, wipe off any excess dirt and moisture with a towel, then hang the tent somewhere where it can fully air out; a nice warm spare room or a garage is perfect. Alternatively, when it stops raining, pitch the tent outside in the sunshine to dry off. Let it air for at least 24 hours and once you are sure that it is bone dry it can be packed away for storage. Note - don’t tumble dry or hang the tent over a radiator or other direct heat source.

Don’t Store in the Stuffsack

Like your sleeping bag, it’s best not to store your sleeping bag in its stuffsack unless it has to be compressed for an activity. Leave it in a large duffel bag or supermarket ‘bag for life’ in a cool, well ventilated area so it can breathe.

Avoid Tree Sap

If you’ve ever had sap on your hands, you’ll know how horrible and sticky the stuff is; it’s even harder to remove from your tent flysheet. Pitch away from trees if possible.

Don’t Leave in the Sun

The majority of tents we stock are made from nylon. Nylon is incredibly tough, lightweight and easy to care for, however it will naturally degrade if left out in harsh sunlight for extended periods of time. Try to pitch your tent in the shade or strike the tent (pack it away) during the day. Polyester tents don’t suffer from this quite as badly, but it’s still a good habit to get into.

Leave Sharp Objects Outside

Boots, cooking equipment and other sharp/abrasive objects can all be stored in the vestibule, where there is less chance of it ripping a hole in your fly or groundsheet. You may not want to pop your pet in there, but at least carry a small blanket to avoid their claws damaging your groundsheet.
