40 MTV Reality Shows You Probably Forgot Existed

RIP The Ashlee Simpson Show.

A snapshot from an MTV show

If you grew up in the early aughts, you remember MTV in its prime— TRL ,  Real World/Road Rules Challenge , there were so many good ones. And yet, the network was also filled with reality shows we can't believe ever made it to air. Sure, you probably wouldn't rewatch them today (or maybe you would, no judgment), but you'll certainly have a good laugh looking back on them. Behold: The best shows on MTV that you probably totally forgot were actual things you watched.

'Making the Band' (2000 - 2002)

'Making the Band' (2000 - 2002)

Making the Band  was the very first installment of the successful franchise and aired for three seasons. The show centered around Sean "Diddy" Combs and a group of artists who competed to join his band. The end result was the mildly successful Danity Kane and, good news: MTV recently announced a revival of the popular show, which is  set to premiere in 2020 .

'Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica' (2003 - 2005)

'Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica' (2003 - 2005)

They were the It couple of pop, so audiences were pumped when Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson welcomed MTV cameras into their home after their 2002 wedding to capture all of their domestic bliss .  The show aired for three seasons and the marriage only lasted for four years, but certain moments, like the iconic chicken vs. tuna debate, will last forever.

'The Ashlee Simpson Show' (2004 - 2005)

'The Ashlee Simpson Show' (2004 - 2005)

Before we knew Ashlee Simpson as a person in her own right, we knew of her as Jessica Simpson's cool/edgy younger sister who wore a lot of skinny scarves. That all changed when we were introduced to her world on  The   Ashlee Simpson Show  and followed her as she recorded her first album.

'Meet the Barkers' (2005 - 2006)

'Meet the Barkers' (2005 - 2006)

Travis Barker, the drummer for Blink-182, and his then-wife Shanna Moakler challenged the idea of your wholesome, next door neighbors by actually being pretty chill...sadly they're no longer together. Call it a case of the MTV reality show curse?

'The Osbournes' (2002 - 2005)

'The Osbournes' (2002 - 2005)

America fell in love with Ozzy and his (then unknown) family over the course of five seasons on MTV. BTW, seeing Kelly as an angsty teen is amazing. This one's actually worth a rewatch.

'Rich Girls' (2003)

'Rich Girls' (2003)

The show followed the daughters of two successful businessmen: Ally Hilfiger (left, daughter of Tommy Hilfiger) and her best friend Jaime Gleicher (right, daughter of Leo Gleicher who started Innovation Luggage). At one point, they talk about the ethics of paying $400 for shoes or...saving a life. You know, the important stuff.

'Life of Ryan' (2007 - 2009)

'Life of Ryan' (2007 - 2009)

Pro skateboarder (and my old school crush, not gonna lie) Ryan Sheckler took center stage in this show that somehow lasted 3 seasons (how?). In it, he boards, takes care of his little bros, and flirts with all the girls. The best part was his monologues on life and love and happiness. So wise, that Ryan.

''Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave' (2004)

''Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave' (2004)

Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro chose a pretty confident title for their newlywed reality series on MTV, given that their marriage only lasted for two years.

'Punk'd' (2003 - 2015)

'Punk'd' (2003 - 2015)

The world of pranks and celebrity collided when Ashton Kutcher's  Punk'd  premiered in 2003. The concept was simple: An accomplice would bring their celebrity friend into a situation that was set up with undercover actors who put the stars in cringe-worthy situations. You weren't a teen in the early aughts if you didn't know the Justin Timberlake  Punk'd  episode by heart.

'Surf Girls' (2003)

'Surf Girls' (2003)

Fourteen amateur surfers, picked to live in a house, wear a ton of Roxy, and compete to get the chance to go pro. Is there anything more MTV than that?

'8th & Ocean' (2006)

'8th & Ocean' (2006)

This show was apparently so bad, you can't find *any* real video of it anymore, almost as if as a society we collectively said "nope" and moved on. It was canceled after one season, but during that season we watched as aspiring male and female models lived and worked in South Beach, Miami, Florida.

'Jackass' (2000 - 2001)

'Jackass' (2000 - 2001)

"Don't try this at home" was a catchphrase every teenage boy was quoting after the success of MTV's  Jackass . Hosted by Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, and Chris Pontius the show ran for 3 seasons, and resulted in countless movies.

'Viva La Bam' (2003 - 2005)

'Viva La Bam' (2003 - 2005)

Jackass  star, Bam Margera, landed his own spin-off in 2003, but unlike the extreme stunts he performed on  Jackass , the entire series was focused on him pranking his parents while he lived with them. We can't help but question why they didn't kick him out after the first episode. Instead, it lasted five (five!) seasons.

'Cribs' (2000 - 2009)

'Cribs' (2000 - 2009)

We'll never forget what the inside of 50 Cent's "East Coast Playboy Mansion" looked like back in 2007, and for that we're so grateful to MTV  Cribs . The reality show where everyone from JoJo to Lil Bow Wow gave a personal tour around their luxurious mansions was a must-watch. The most interesting part? Oddly enough, their fridge.

'Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County' (2004 - 2006)

'Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County' (2004 - 2006)

Laguna Beach  followed a group of high school juniors and seniors around their hometown of Laguna Beach, California, as they went to parties, on spring break (long live Cabo), and served up so much drama that MTV decided to follow their lead to Los Angeles with a spin-off.

'The Hills' (2006 - 2010)

'The Hills' (2006 - 2010)

After the success of  Laguna Beach,  MTV cameras followed Lauren Conrad as she navigated school, dating, and friendships post-high school in Los Angeles. The show was so popular, MTV brought back a reboot this year, but sadly Lauren passed on the opportunity.

'The City' (2008 - 2010)

'The City' (2008 - 2010)

A spin-off of a spin-off? Only on MTV.  The City  followed Whitney Port from  The Hills  as she navigated New York City over the course of two seasons. It was also the show that launched Olivia Palermo into notoriety and for that we are eternally grateful.

'Room Raiders' (2003 - 2009)

'Room Raiders' (2003 - 2009)

Room Raiders  essentially involved being kidnapped from your house, brought to a viewing booth with two other boys or girls, and watching someone go through your room before deciding whether they wanted to go on a date with you or not. There were some questionable things found in those rooms throughout the show's eight seasons.

'A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila' (2007 - 2008)

'A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila' (2007 - 2008)

When Tila Tequila's show first premiered on MTV, the concept pushed the boundaries of cable television. You see, Tila Tequila was a MySpace star who was searching for love. The twist? She's bi-sexual and welcomed both men and women into the mansion.

'A Double Shot at Love' (2008)

'A Double Shot at Love' (2008)

After the success of Tila Tequila's dating show, MTV decided to double down with  A Double Shot at Love,  a dating show that followed a pair bi-sexual identical twins, Ricki and Vicki, on their quest to find lasting relationships. It was...messy.

'My Super Sweet Sixteen' (2005 - 2011)

'My Super Sweet Sixteen' (2005 - 2011)

My Super Sweet 16  is known for three things: Bratty teens girls, overindulgent parents, and the birthday boy or girl almost always getting a luxury car at the end of the episode. All that being said, it was one of the most entertaining shows on the network and always brought the drama.

'Rob & Big' (2006 - 2008)

'Rob & Big' (2006 - 2008)

The concept of  Rob & Big  sounds relatively simple: A former pro-skateboarder and his bodyguard just hanging out in Los Angeles, playing pranks and having fun. But when it premiered in 2006, it instantly took off as viewers were obsessed with their unusual lifestyle and friendship.

'Ridiculousness' (2011 - Now)

'Ridiculousness' (2011 - Now)

When Rob Dyrdek's show  Ridiculousness  premiered in 2011, audiences were instantly hooked on the video-viewing program. For 13 seasons, and still counting, Rob has showed us some of the most absurd videos on the internet.

'Next' (2005 - 2008)

'Next' (2005 - 2008)

Next  was the most ruthless dating show on MTV in the 2000s, hands down. One lucky man or woman would get to meet a bunch of perspective dates one by one—and could yell "next" at any time to end the date and move on to the next candidate. Sometimes it would end with a couple running off into the sunset holding hands, but other times potential dates didn't even make it off of the bus before they were ousted.

'Plain Jane' (2011)

'Plain Jane' (2011)

Plain Jane  premiered on the CW, but after not getting renewed, it made its way over to MTV for season 2. The show followed the stylish British fashionista, Louise Roe, as she transformed the life of a "plain Jane" by giving them a makeover and confidence boost.

'Pimp My Ride' (2004 - 2009)

'Pimp My Ride' (2004 - 2009)

For anyone clunking around town in a banged up car,  Pimp My Ride  was the ultimate goal. During each episode, a team of car experts, including mechanics and customizers, came together to give one lucky person the car of their dreams. Nothing was too extra or extreme for this show.

'Jersey Shore' (2009 - 2012)

'Jersey Shore' (2009 - 2012)

It was impossible not to know who Snooki or The Situation was in 2009. The reality show that followed a cast of 20-somethings while they spent the summer at the Jersey Shore became a phenomenon. It even came back in 2018 and is on season three of  Jersey Shore Family Reunion.

'Snooki & JWoww' (2012 - 2015)

'Snooki & JWoww' (2012 - 2015)

With the success of  Jersey Shore,  both MTV and castmates Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley were eager to capitalize on their momentum. In 2012,  Snooki & JWoww  premiered. It followed the two roommates around their everyday life in New Jersey. The show had a solid following and lasted for four seasons.

'Road Rules' (1995 - 2007)

'Road Rules' (1995 - 2007)

MTV's game show-style reality series,  Road Rules , brought together six attractive young people and put them in an RV together. They drove around the season's selected region and competed for money. The show was essentially  The   Real World  meets  The Amazing Race , and, really, what could be better than that?

'TRL (Total Request Live)' (1998 - Now)

'TRL (Total Request Live)' (1998 - Now)

In the early 2000s, everyone rushed home to tune into  TRL . The show was a countdown of the top music videos of the day, and was hosted by VJs including Carson Daly and Vanessa Milano, as well as some of the hottest artists of the moment.

'16 and Pregnant' (2009 - 2015)

'16 and Pregnant' (2009 - 2015)

You've probably heard of the drama that circulates around the  Teen Mom  cast members, and it all started on  16 and Pregnant.  The show followed a group of young girls from across America, who all unexpectedly got pregnant, but each had different circumstances. It was *controversial* when it first premiered, but has since resulted in numerous successful spin-offs.

'Girl Code' (2013 - 2015)

'Girl Code' (2013 - 2015)

MTV's response to their success with  Guy Code ?  Girl Code,  which was a commentary on all things related to the female sex, from waxing to frenemies. Comedians and personalities shared their witty and sometimes bad advice with viewers.

'True Life' (1998 - 2016)

'True Life' (1998 - 2016)

The documentary series  True Life  first aired in 1998 and lasted an impressive 22 seasons. The show carved out its own unique section of pop culture as it delved into the bizarre habits of people and subcultures in society. Where else could you learn about an addiction to eating one's couch or the tendency to drink your laundry detergent?

'Made' (2003 - 2013)

'Made' (2003 - 2013)

Throughout it's 13 seasons,  Made  was one of the most inspiring and wholesome television shows to appear on MTV. Shot in a documentary style, each episode followed a young teen who wanted to fulfill an unrealized dream. The show would pair them with a  Made  coach, who specialized in whatever they were aiming to do, whether that was trying out for a sport they've never played or asking out the hottest girl in school.

'Lindsay Lohan's Beach Club' (2019)

'Lindsay Lohan's Beach Club' (2019)

True, this show aired fairly recently, but we thought LiLo's return to the camera deserved a shout-out.  Lindsay Lohan's Beach Club  was labeled a docu-series, but let's be real: it was a reality show. It followed a group of employees around the actress's new Beach Club in Mykonos, Greece. Sadly, this gem wasn't renewed for a second season.

'Parental Control' (2005 - 2010)

'Parental Control' (2005 - 2010)

Parental Control  usually started with a teenager's parents hating their boyfriend/girlfriend and wanting them to meet someone else. As a solution, the parents picked a few dates for their teen and then proceeded to watch the dates *with* their son or daughter's current GF/BF. It didn't always turn out the way the parents wanted, but it was always entertaining (and hard) to watch.

'MTV Unplugged' (1989 - Now)

'MTV Unplugged' (1989 - Now)

Since MTV stands for Music Television, it makes sense that one of the oldest and most popular shows on the network is  MTV Unplugged —a show that let's artists perform acoustic versions of their songs for an audience. Many musicians, from Paul McCartney to Mariah Carey, have appeared on the show.

'Sorority Life' (2002)

'Sorority Life' (2002)

In this documentary-style show, MTV followed six women as they rushed, pledged, and were initiated into Greek life on  Sorority Life.  There was an epic Michelle Branch song that played in the intro, FWIW.

'Date My Mom' (2004 - 2006)

'Date My Mom' (2004 - 2006)

In one of the weirder dating shows that MTV produced,  Date My Mom  sent a guy or girl out on a date with three different moms. The singleton must then pick who he wants to take on a date. Weird, we know.

'Remote Control' (1987-1990)

'Remote Control' (1987-1990)

When MTV started, the network was all music programs (obviously), but  Remote Control  was the first non-music show. It was a game show about TV-related trivia, ran from 1987 to 1990, and is considered the start of MTV's aforementioned reality programs.

Will Emmy Ratings Be as Easy as ABC?

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Television will be all dressed up in its finest Sunday, but whether the industry will have anywhere to go from a ratings standpoint remains to be seen. Viewing of the Emmy Awards has been in a bit of a funk since 1987, when the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which presents the awards, couldn’t resist the big bucks offered by a then-fledgling Fox network and made a deal that began a six-year run there. The ceremony’s share of prime-time audience quickly dropped from an average 33% from 1982-86 to just 16% over the next four years, becoming something of an embarrassment to the academy, which watched other televised award shows surpass its own exercise in self-congratulation. Since then the program’s share has climbed back into the 20s and the academy agreed to a four-year broadcast deal rotating among all the networks. Even so, viewing dipped to a five-year low last year on Fox, and network levels in general have been on a downward track throughout the summer. ABC, which televises the event this year, and the academy hope popular shows and big-name stars (Paul Reiser hosts, with Michael J. Fox and Oprah Winfrey helping out) will return some Nielsen luster to the Emmy statue. . . . There could be a slightly uncomfortable moment when the Emmy is handed out for supporting actress in a miniseries or special. Among the nominees is Kathy Bates for her scathing portrayal of Helen Kushnick in “The Late Shift,” HBO’s account of “The Tonight Show” succession battle. Kushnick--Jay Leno’s former manager, who was eventually ousted as executive producer of the NBC talk show--died of cancer last Wednesday. Other nominees in the category are Greta Scacchi, Diana Scarwid, Mare Winningham and Alfre Woodard.

Imus, a Little Too Early in the Morning

You’ve got to get up pretty early in the morning to be shocked by Don Imus--at least if you’re planning to watch him on MSNBC. The New York-based syndicated jock begins his television experiment Tuesday when three hours of his radio show, “Imus in the Morning,” will be broadcast live weekdays on the cable outlet. But, because MSNBC has only one satellite feed, Imus will be seen here from 3 to 6 a.m. Hey, who wants to get up that early to watch a radio show? (NBC plans a West Coast feed to be instituted next year.) Like his New York counterpart Howard Stern, parts of whose shows are seen daily on E! Entertainment Television, Imus is simply allowing cameras to be brought into the studio to chronicle his irreverent, sometimes bawdy skewering of politics and culture. It is, literally, radio with not very interesting pictures, a notion that Imus has himself been ridiculing on-air ever since the deal was announced. (Of course, he’s laughing all the way to the bank.) Stern’s show, however, is taped and edited into half-hour segments that are broadcast later the same day. Imus’ show will be seen live, providing opportunities for the often risque Imus and his cohorts to offend viewers. When the show was announced in July, Imus said he would not tone down his act for TV. And NBC News President Andrew Lack said MSNBC’s emphasis is on “taking some risks” and he didn’t think the network was “rolling the dice.” As for us, we’d just as soon be shocked, insulted or disgusted a little later when “Imus in the Morning” is broadcast--delayed, of course--from 5 to 10 a.m. on KLAC-AM (570).

Maybe Lisa Marie Will Kiss Pee-wee

MTV’s “Video Music Awards” telecast isn’t really about videos or awards. It’s about exposure. Because of the cable channel’s huge influence on the young record-buying audience, the show each year is able to attract the cream of the rock and rap worlds. It’s why Beck, whose 1994 “Loser” is one of the most celebrated singles of the ‘90s, would agree to do something as silly as perform from the roof of a moving bus that will carry him down Manhattan’s 6th Avenue to Wednesday’s show at Radio City Music Hall. Not any bus, mind you, but MTV’s “Choose or Lose” bus, which has been traveling around the country all year--without Beck on top--promoting voter awareness. Hoping to attract attention in more conventional ways will be a virtual battle of the bands among the evening’s performers, who will include Alanis Morissette, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, the Fugees, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Hootie & the Blowfish and the ever-present KISS. Serving as host is smirk-meister Dennis Miller, who’s sure to offer some off-the-cuff commentary. But usually the show’s most talked-about moment is a surprise feature. Among memorable past highlights: Pee-wee Herman’s first professional appearance after his arrest on lewd conduct and a show-opening smooch between then-newlyweds Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley.

Uh, Lisa Marie, Don’t Expect Any Postcards

Speaking of Michael. . . . His popularity may have faded in this country, but the self-proclaimed King of Pop still has claim to that title in much of the rest of the world, where he reportedly has sold more than 8 million copies of his two-disc “HIStory” album--as opposed to about 3 million in this country. Those figures may also explain why Jackson will be in Prague on Saturday for the opening date of his first world tour since he reached an out-of-court settlement in 1994 with the family of a 14-year-old boy who claimed that he had been sexually molested by Jackson. More than 90,000 tickets have already been sold for the stadium date in Prague. Other stops on the tour include Budapest, Seoul, Bangkok, Moscow and Warsaw. And what about that much-hyped HBO special that was postponed last December after Jackson, later found to have a viral infection, collapsed during rehearsals in New York? An HBO representative says there is still no news about rescheduling.

What Could Be Next? The Three Basses?

Although you wouldn’t know it to see the ads or the PR, the Three Sopranos, who are about to have their “gala debut appearance” this week on the grounds of the Century Plaza Towers, are not the original item. The first distaff operatic trio to claim that title was Renata Scotto, Ileana Cotrubas and Edita Gruberova, who sang together once, in Sicily, shortly after the marketing concept was born with Domingo, Carreras and Pavarotti in Rome in 1990. For the latest extravaganza, the producing Tibor Rudas organization seems to be banking on brand strength rather than star power. The singers--Kathleen Cassello, Kallen Esperian and Cynthia Lawrence--are not yet big names, even in the opera world. Still, the form if not the scale of many other Threesome details is in place: an outdoor venue with pillars promised on the set, Ahmet Ertegun as co-producer of the album for Atlantic, a PBS broadcast slated to anchor upcoming pledge drives, and European dates in the offing. The question is, how will it sell? With a week to go, the Rudas organization would only say their 2,000 tickets were selling “very well.” It’s worth noting that on the same night, the Los Angeles Opera, opening “Norma” with Single Soprano (and bona fide international star) Jane Eaglen, has sold close to 80% of its 3,098 seats at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

“MTV’s The Real World has been credited with creating the Reality TV genre and was one of the first series that tackled important and yet unrepresented topics of the time, from HIV/AIDS, Race, Gender, Orientation and Religion,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV Entertainment Group. “With Paramount+ being the home to so many global reality hit franchises, it seems only fitting to bring back the franchise and cast that started it all.”

Created for MTV by Jonathan Murray and the late Mary-Ellis Bunim of Bunim/Murray Productions, The Real World was the first reality series on television. It helped shape a generation and sought to spotlight culturally resonant stories such as HIV/AIDS, race, sexual orientation, mental health and addiction, including one of the first LGBTQ+ relationships documented on a TV series, the first televised same-sex commitment ceremony, and its unforgettable portrayal of Pedro Zamora’s battle with HIV.

The Real World reboot was among the first titles on the slate of MTV Studios when it launched in 2018. The project went to Facebook Watch for one installment, which already aired.

Lily Neumeyer, Sitarah Pendelton-Eaglin, Candida Boyette-Clemons and Nadim Amiry executive produce for MTV Entertainment Studios. Jonathan Murray, Julie Pizzi, Erica Ross, Kevin Lee and Trish Gold executive produce for Bunim/Murray Productions. Jacob Lane is co-executive producer and George Verschoor is consulting producer.

MTV recently successfully revived another reality staple at the network, Jersey Shore , with its original cast.

Jersey Shore is among a slew of hit ViacomCBS’ biggest reality franchises that will be on Paramount+, along with Love & Hip Hop, Love Island, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Amazing Race, Survivor, The Challenge, Big Brother and more.

Multiple seasons of The Real World are available to stream now on CBS All Access, soon to be rebranded as Paramount+.

We’ll be the first to admit it: It’s fun to see inside other people’s homes. Do they have a backyard? An in-unit washer-dryer? You ask yourself a litany of questions: Would I live there? Would I pay that much to live there?

A year and a half since launching the series, he’s captured even bigger names with tours like “Inside Christie Brinkley’s $30 Million Hampton’s Castle” and “Inside Shark Tank Star Barbara Corcoran 's $1 Million LA Mobile Home.” But he still features the homes of everyday people, which is probably part of the reason the series is so relevant.

“When I first moved to New York City, I'm googling, ‘What neighborhood should I live in?’ ‘What neighborhood is safe and what do these apartments look like?’” Simpson remembers. “There’s not that much real information, and it’s like, wait, how am I supposed to see what's going on here?” Below, the content creator talks to House Beautiful about his own design style, the number-one thing people want to show him, and how he keeps viewers on their toes.

House Beautiful: What was the origin story behind starting the home tour series?

Caleb Simpson: I was trying to think of a new idea, something that excited me. One of my friends who is a YouTuber and content creator said, “Make something you want to see.” I was watching this street interview clip [about income and rent in New York], and I had this light bulb moment. I was like, I would love to see inside that person’s home.

That’s actually such a fascinating question, especially living in New York City. Walking around, you’re always curious what it’s like up in that building or when you’re walking into somebody else’s apartment, you’re kind of like, “How much are you paying?” It was also the peak of high rents, especially in New York City. So it was a big topic of conversation.

HB: What has resonated so much with the internet? Why has this been so popular?

CS: We all live in a box. That’s the one thing we have in common, all around the entire globe. I don’t think there’s really been anything in media that’s shown off how collectively how everyone lives. TV shows like MTV Cribs and outlets like Architectural Digest , they all just focus on lifestyles of the rich and famous and not just that everyday person that we could see ourselves in that person’s shoes.

HB: Were there any initial challenges getting it off the ground?

CS: There was definitely a lot of pushback initially. Even now there’s still some. It’s extremely vulnerable, and I get that. You’re letting millions of people into your world. And especially when it first started, there wasn’t a proven concept. I was just some random guy who’s like, I want to come to your home and I want to film it.

House Beautiful: What inspired you to take the show on the road outside New York to neighborhoods in L.A. and Tokyo?

CS: Just my own curiosity, really. And I was curious to see if people would resonate. Everyone having a collective travel experience of these places outside of where they live. I just hopped on a plane and went. I was nervous about it, but people enjoyed it.

House Beautiful: What are people most excited to show you?

CS: This is going to sound funny, but if it’s more of just a basic apartment where someone hasn’t spent that much time curating, there are specific pieces they want to show me, like a bar cart . Everyone loves pointing out their bar cart.

People also like talking about the neighborhood. A lot of people feel like they got a deal, too, whether they did or didn’t. I don’t tell them if I think it’s a bad deal. One person in DUMBO told me, “We pay six grand a month, it’s a great deal!” And I was looking at the guy, like, this is not a good deal.

HB: Has the series inspired your own design aesthetic?

CS: I recently got rid of everything in my bedroom and turned it into a Japanese-style room. I cleared everything out to make it as minimal as possible, and then built it from the floor up. I got tatami mats and put down just a futon, then I got a floor lamp, a low table, and ordered a tea set. The whole point is that the room can function as different rooms during the day. It can be a bedroom at night and then maybe a playroom or a tea room or whatever you want to turn it into. Really, I just wanted something different from the traditional American bedroom I’d been sleeping in my entire life. I was like, let’s change it up for a year and see how I feel.

I have no idea what I’m doing, so it kind of feels like painting a canvas. You don’t really know how it’s going to affect the space until you put the piece in there and then you look at it and then you make a judgment call.

HB: What’s your own apartment like?

CS: I think my apartment’s actually very eclectic. Everything downstairs has very low furniture. There’s a fireplace with a cuddle cushion corner where me and Drew Barrymore cuddled in that video. We have two outdoor spaces. There’s a roof deck, and I have a cold plunge and sauna out there.

We turned one of the offices into a pole dancing room because one of my roommates started taking pole dancing classes. So we put up mirrors, the pole, there’s an old fireplace, and then just to play to the theme, I bought $500,000 of fake hundred dollar bills. It’s just random but kind of funny.

HB: You’ve been intentional about showing a mix of housing across the spectrum, from celebrity homes to public housing projects. How do you make decisions on what you’re choosing to show the audience?

CS: I think it just goes back to inclusion, and that’s what I try to think about. The full spectrum of how people live. When I was in Hong Kong, I went to see the low poverty income housing and made videos about that, which is just a deep, dark, heavy topic that most people don’t even like to talk about. I was nervous about highlighting it, I just didn’t want it to come off the wrong way.

But it was received well, and I was like, okay, and those are things I’m curious about seeing and talking with people about housing issues and things of that nature, even though I might not share all the information, just my own curiosity.

So I think that’s it. It’s just trying to show the full spectrum of how the world lives and what I'm curious about.

And then obviously I pay attention to what the audience responds to as well. There’s a style of video or something I’m showing off a lot and people aren’t receiving it well. I’m like, okay, well, maybe I should go in a little bit different of a direction.

I kind of want to surprise myself, which in turn I know will surprise the audience. So I’ll stop somebody and then see what they pay for rent or maybe they won’t even share, and then I want it to be a complete surprise on what’s going to be on the other side of that door.

Richie Sambora apologizes for abrupt Bon Jovi exit, compares it to leaving the mafia

"I guess if you're in the mafia, the only thing you possibly do is disappear. And I did," the rocker says in the band's new docuseries, "Thank You, Goodnight."

Emlyn Travis is a news writer at  Entertainment Weekly  with over five years of experience covering the latest in entertainment. A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

Looking back, Richie Sambora regrets the way that he chose to leave Bon Jovi .

In the final episode of the new Hulu docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , the guitarist apologized for his controversial decision to exit the legendary rock band just hours before they were set to perform in Calgary on their 2013 Because We Can tour. But Sambora also asserted that the group "knew exactly why I didn't get on the plane that night" during his interview for the doc, which premiered Friday.

"People have this preconceived notion of Richie Sambora because they read about me in the tabloids, because they see the Bon Jovi machine," he said. "It's a band. It's really, really hard to be married to four other guys and be in close quarters and that, coupled with my daughter coming of age."

At the time, Sambora, who had previously entered rehab in 2007 and 2011, cited personal issues as the reason for his sudden disappearance, but he later told PEOPLE that the decision came specifically from needing to put his health and relationship with daughter Ava first. So musician Phil X, who filled in for Sambora in 2011, returned to cover the rest of the band’s 2013 tour dates.

Kevin Mazur/Getty

“I don’t regret leaving the situation, but I regret how I did it,” Sambora clarified in the docuseries. “So I’d like to apologize fully right now to the fans, especially, and also to the guys, because my feet and my spirit were just not letting me walk out the door.”

He added, “I guess if you’re in the mafia, the only thing you possibly do is disappear. And I did.”

Despite a difficult start, the rest of tour went off without a hitch, with the group missing none of their 80 performances. “At the end of the day, there was disappointment and sadness and anger, but it didn’t matter to the public,” frontman Jon Bon Jovi recalled in the docuseries. “It was the number-one-grossing tour in the world that year, and that was that.”

The “Wanted Dead or Alive” singer admitted that he continues to “hold out for hope” that Sambora will one day return. “I think it’s sort of like you’re in a marriage or a family that has a situation like this and you’re always hoping that the family member’s gonna get better and everything’s gonna be peachy," he said.

Jovi also noted that he will always feel a “void” without Sambora on stage beside him. “The true magic of our live performance was when we sang together… that was our unique spot,” he said. “It was as identifiable as any great combination that made one and one three. And I don’t think that’s been replaced, no.”

These days, Sambora reflects on his time in Bon Jovi with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

“Jon and I touched the planet with those songs. You realize that you were warriors that love each other, watched each other’s backs, told each other the truth,” he said. “If anybody doesn’t think that we were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jimmy [Page] and Robert [Plant], any way you wanna slice it… come on!”

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Alec John Such, a founding member of Bon Jovi, dies at 70

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

Ian Bohen is teasing big things for  Yellowstone 's final season. ET spoke to the actor ahead of the Paramount Network show's pop-up at Stagecoach , and he wasn't shy about the epic nature of  Yellowstone 's upcoming series finale .

"The fans are going to get the [best] conclusion that could possibly be written," Bohen told ET. "Everything will land in a way that is perfectly set. A lot of shows just kind of finish... and they don't satisfy you. This will be completed in a way that it will make sense."

"I don't know that any show has finished this strongly ever," he continued. "We're expecting to have the best series finale in history. Overconfident maybe, but I think that's what it's going to be. We thank everyone for their patience... It'll be worth the wait, I promise."

As fans wait with bated breath to see how the Kevin Costner-led series will wrap up, they can immerse themselves in the world of  Yellowstone  at the show's Dutton Ranch pop-up at Stagecoach in Indio, California, from April 26 to 28.

"We're gonna have some talent from, not just Yellowstone , but across the Taylor [Sheridan] shows," Bohen said of the event. "There's going to be meet and greets where we can hang out and chat and take pictures. There's gonna be some merchandise... [It] will be centered in between all the music all around. It's a really great addition to what's happening there all weekend."

Actors attending the event include Dave Annable, Jen Landon and LaMonica Garrett. Yellowstone  star Luke Grimes is also taking the stage at the music festival, which is being headlined by Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Morgan Wallen.

As Bohen gears up for the festival, where limited co-branded Yellowstone x Stagecoach merch will be available for purchase at the Airstream pop-up shop, he reflected on getting to experience the show's impact alongside his co-stars.

"It's like having brothers and sisters where you go through life moments, and you're with your family. When something really neat happens, you look to your left and to your right to see who's with you that's smiling the same way that you are," he said. "It's looking sideways to see who's standing next to you and they feeling the same stuff. It's a family... It's never going to go away."

The obvious impact of the series is "so grounding" to experience at real-life events like Stagecoach, Bohen said.

"When people talk about what the show means to them, it makes you feel like you're part of something much bigger than just an entertainment product," he told ET. "It touches people in a way that is different than just something that they're fans of. It's a cultural phenomenon... It makes you feel like the work that you're doing is more important than you ever thought it would be."

The final season of MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Paramount Network's  Yellowstone  will premiere in November 2024.

South Park The Streaming Wars

Paramount Global is planning a suite of streaming channel for South Park fans to launch on the ad-based service Pluto TV in international markets.

The series, from creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, has aired 26 seasons on Comedy Central and spawned a 1999 theatrical feature,  South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut . Now Pluto TV is doubling down on the South Park brand by creating a dedicated main channel across all international markets where the AVOD streaming platform is active.

The studio also plans a series of monthly South Park- themed channels across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Canada, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Latin America and Australia. As the South Park series expands on Pluto TV, the streamer also plans a suite of channels dedicated to the series’ characters like Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny. And Canada will have a suite of French language channels as part of its offering.

The South Park series expansion on Pluto TV is also separate from a deal between MTV Entertainment Studios, a Paramount division, and co-creators Parker and Stone to keep their animated series on Comedy Central through 2027, which will take the scripted series to 30 seasons. Stone and Parker also have a deal separate from Pluto TV for original South Park TV movies to stream exclusively on Paramount+.

“We know that this is one of Paramount’s fan-favorite franchises, and we are excited to offer viewers a new way to enjoy a series that, for the last 26 years, has entertained multiple generations with its funny and subversive world across the whole Paramount ecosystem,” Kat Kowalski, senior vp of international content strategy & acquisitions at Pluto TV, said in a statement.
