Nancy Wilson Details Plans to Tour With Ann-Free Heart Lineup

Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson has detailed plans to tour under the Nancy Wilson's Heart moniker, which will not include her sister and singer Ann Wilson .

Wilson's new Heart lineup features several of her longtime collaborators, including guitarist Ryan Waters, drummer Ben Smith, bassist Andy Stoller and keyboardist Dan Walker. Vocal duties will fall to Kimberly Nichole , a Seattle native who became a finalist on Season 8 of  The Voice and performed on Broadway in 2018 for a limited engagement of  Rocktopia .

Wilson  introduced her new band on social media earlier this month, and she recently explained the reasoning behind the band name to Joe Rock of the Long Island, N.Y., radio station WBAB 102.3 .

"Heart had a big offer on the table last year for a bigger tour, but Ann wasn't interested in going out with my lineup of guys that we were out with before," Wilson said (via  Blabbermouth ).

"She has a new lineup of guys that she wanted me to join up with. And I sort of [thought], I don't really know them and don't have loyalty yet for anybody like that. So I just kind of shined it on and decided when I do go out with my new singer Kimberly, I can telegraph to the people coming to the show that they're gonna hear Heart songs in a whole different way."

Wilson added that there was "no comparison to Ann singing or Kimberly singing those same songs, just because it's apples and oranges; you can't compare that stuff. So I figure that's a way to let them know that it's not just Nancy Wilson of Heart doing whatever, but it's Nancy Wilson's Heart, where you're gonna hear more Heart stuff."

The guitarist added that she has "an offer from Styx  for me to take my band out, with Kimberly. We're trying to put some dates together in September, preceding that, or after October, where those dates are offered to us. So we're trying to make it work — maybe a couple of buses and a truck. We're just crunching numbers right now. But I would be really excited to be able to go and open the show for Styx and do some songs with them at the same show."

Nancy Wilson's Heart recently made their live debut opening for Styx during the latter band's five-night, 50th-anniversary residency at Las Vegas' Venetian Theatre, which ran from Jan. 28 through Feb. 5. You can see fan-shot footage of one of their performances below.

The Wilson sisters last toured under the Heart name in 2019. Nancy has since released a solo album,  You  and Me , in 2021, while Ann will release a new solo LP titled  Fierce Bliss in April. Nancy will also join Melissa Etheridge, the Go-Go's ' Kathy Valentine and Orianthi as a co-leader of the first-ever women's-only Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp over Mother's Day weekend (May 6-9) in Los Angeles.

Heart is a successful rock band from Seattle, Washington based around sister duo Ann Wilson (lead singer) and Nancy Wilson (guitarist) who are now based in Vancouver, Canada.

The formation of Heart can be traced to two couples, Ann Wilson & Mike Fisher and Nancy Wilson & Roger Fisher. The group played numerous shows around their new home in Vancouver, and they recorded a demo tape with the assistance of producer Mike Flicker and session-guitarist and keyboard player, Howard Leese. Flicker went on to produce the band's first five albums due to their successful working relationship. Their debut album broke the top ten on the US billboard charts aided by two hit singles 'Magic Man' and 'Crazy On You', an impressive feat for a new artist.

Due to a bitter magazine article claiming the sisters were romantically involved, the band cut its ties with record label Mushroom Records and signed with a competitor, Portrait Records. In 1977 both labels released material by the band whilst trying to prevent the other from any future releases. Eventually a Seattle court forced Mushroom to recall the album so Heart could remix and rework tracks before officially releasing it again, featuring hit single 'Heartless' which went on to be certified platinum. The band enjoyed continuous success with it's following releases. 'Dog & Butterfly' became a double platinum selling record and Babe Le Strange became their third top ten chart hit. They supported the latter with a 77 city tour to expand their growing fan base even further.

The next two releases were not produced by Mike Flicker and struggled commercially without the hit singles of the previous, however in 1985 the band reclaimed their status with a self titled release which debuted at #1 in the US, sold five million copies and featured four top ten hits including the chart topping 'These Dreams'. The next album featured their most recognisable worldwide hit, 'Alone' which achieved number one in both the US and Canada in 1987. Their chart success simmered after this. The albums still performed well in the States and 'Brigade' became their highest placing in the UK charts, yet in 1995 the group went on hiatus with Ann wanting to concentrate on her family.

In 2002, Ann and Nancy returned to the road with a brand-new Heart lineup that included Scott Olson, Ben Smith, Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez, and keyboardist Tom Kellock whilst still releasing original material. Heart is considered one of the most consistently successful American bands achieving top 10 billboard albums in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2010s and in 2013 they were rewarded with an induction into the Rock & Roll Hame of Fame.

Live reviews

It is a true inspiration to see Heart live. Founders of the band, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson, play with so much passion it is nearly impossible not to get swept off your feet when seeing them perform. To see them blend all the diverse genres of music they play live is an immense pleasure to witness.

Heart has great musical chemistry whenever they perform live, which is probably highly influenced by the two main songwriters being sisters. The two sisters, Ann and Nancy, are looked at as musical legends within their genre for being some of the first female performers to front a hard rock band. They are rock and roll pioneers that helped pave the path for many that have come after them. Both Nancy and Ann have impeccable voices, and they often alternate between singing songs in the set. Nancy often has a softer, more pristine voice, while Ann has the more intense, stronger voice, which is able to pull off the more hard rock songs like “Crazy on You”. Both the sisters play guitar on songs, but Nancy usually is more likely to be seen on the guitar while Ann is more likely to be seen singing her heart out on the microphone.

The rest of the band plays integral roles in the performance as well contributing to the strong rhythmic foundation of the performance and playing some important leads on the guitar and other instruments. Ann is also known to add a more orchestrated sound to the performance with her ability to play the flute on such songs as “Walkin’ Good”. It is not unexpected that a band that has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a band that has sold over 35 million records would put on such an amazing show. They have even impressed the likes of Led Zeppelin when they performed a cover of the song, “Stairway to Heaven”. Heart is so interesting to see live because of their wide diversity of musical sounds. One moment they could be inspiring their audience to rock out to a more heavy oriented song like, “Barracuda”, and the next moment they could soothe the audience with one of their folk ballads.

Some Bands are just infallible. HEART is one of those Bands. Even when they are obviously either having a "off night" (all Bands deal with) or suffering from a Bad mix which, I think was the case at the Xfinity Center last night. Or both? I've seen Bands deal with this in numerous ways usually to the detriment of the sound guy and the inevitable effect on the performance on the whole.

Not so with HEART and not just the Wilson Sisters but, the whole Band. They fought their way thru the mess and as always gave everything they had for the audience. Never once making a comment or hostile "signals" to the side of stage. Though at one point there was a mass "pick throwing" in that direction but accompanied with smiles so... Professionals through out.

To no surprise Ann Wilson is still the epicenter on any stage on any given night with a voice that is still thunderous and commanding and it is all her with no enhancements what so ever.

They left the stage at the appointed time of 10:30 but it was done rather abruptly.

As per their standard they encored with two Zeppelin Songs and honestly I think HEART might due Zeppelin better than Zeppelin now?!

tommyv’s profile image

American/Canadian hard rock outfit Heart have an inter-band history with a romantic twist as the two sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson were originally coupled to two of the musicians, brothers Mike and Roger Fisher. Years later, it is only the sisters who remain in the touring lineup yet they are now joined by long term musical collaborators who know the entire discography well.

There is a great mixture this evening of the original and recently revived hard rock/alt-folk sounds along with the classic balladic stylings of 'These Dreams'. The largest singalong comes for the iconic, timeless and ever powerful 'Alone' and although the thousand strong crowd bellow out the choruses, the vocal prowess of the sisters trumps them every time. They remind the audience of the fantastic music found on their early albums such as 'Magic Man' and 'Barracuda' which have both aged brilliantly. It is worth noting that as Heart approach their thousandth live show, they still obtain a huge amount of passion and determination for the live show and their loyal audiences.

The ladies looked amazing especially Ann wow she dropped weight and had a complete makeover I felt like I was back in 1975 now for the BAD 1) the noise for the show was low there was a lot of old people there but to have a rock show and turn the volume down was unacceptable I went to disturbed the next night at the same venue and then for the songs I love the most the 80's heart songs they played 3 of them these dreams, alone, and what about love they replaced the electric guitar with a acoustic guitar twice and a eucalele once u know that small guitar with double the strings ? But barracuda and magic man were full electric so that was cool but overall I think the show was geared more toward the geriatric crowd even Joan Jett's set was mainly very mainstream songs both songs from light of day ,cherry bomb (made famous by that movie the runaways) and the usual hits overall a 6 out of 10 for me not a bad show but definitely not in my high tier of shows and I've been to hundreds over the years

The concert was great, a little hot n muggy but well worth it. We had lawn seats n it was just so packed out if we had brought lawn chairs we wouldn't have been able to sit in them not enough room, of course we did get there late cause of the traffic going into the race track. Kinda ridiculous actually. Riverbend really needs to fix the problem, traffic from Coney island and the race track ended up walking a mile from the parking problem, 3 very popular events at the same time is just CRAZY.... over all the waiting to get parked it was a great concert.

barbararichardson’s profile image

Thoroughly enjoyable gig, if a tad on the short side. Playing a main set of only 50 minutes is not really acceptable, plus covering 3 Led Zepp tracks as an encore seemed a somewhat self-indulgent homage to their idols. That said, it was great to witness the Wilson sisters in person, Anne's singing and Nancy's guitar work (and vice versa) both top drawer. Highlights - Anne's stripped down version of Alone, and, as always, Crazy On You.

In summary, a great gig but 20 mins more show time and more Heart songs please ladies.

What can I say but OH MY GOD! Heart were absolutely amazing! Anne and Nancy's voices are every bit as powerful, alluring, and enchanting as ever. The band was super. Joan Jett and Cheap Trick were both pretty dang good. Waiting out the downpour made it all even more worth it. I only wish we could've seen more of them, but the rain forced it to go short. The set list was just spectacular. I hope they play RR again!

I've been seeing heart since I was 14 yrs old I think they are amazing. I learned to sing the songs just like Ann Wilson. She has such a powerful voice. I learned a lot about Ann from Ann's life through her songs. Nancy is a great guitar player and has a great voice as well. I met them at a book signing in huntington yrs ago. I see them everytime they come to NY. I'm one of there biggest fans.

Lisasobler’s profile image

Heart are brilliant. Anne and Nancy can still sing and play like they are still in the 80's. Top notch performance and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra gave songs an amazing lift. Only downside was the very short set. 60 minutes then went off. 15 minutes of encores so 80 minutes tops. So not VFM.

steve-byrne-5’s profile image

Heart was great! Ann & Nancy still have it going on. Only problem was the venue. I wish they would have stuck to singing their hits and left off what they wanted to sing. Maybe some of their old songs were just out of their vocal range today...dunno. Otherwise, I recommend seeing them!

Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson Recall the Time the Van Halen Brothers Propositioned Them

H eart’s sibling bandmates, Ann and Nancy Wilson, paid a visit to SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on April 10. During their interview, the sisters shared their recollections of touring with Van Halen, and in particular, of their interactions with that band’s own sibling duo, Eddie and Alex Van Halen.

The Wilsons discussed the Van Halen brothers’ volatile relationship and their having alcohol intake, and they also recalled an interesting incident where Eddie and Alex proposed that the sisters get sexually involved with them.

Howard Stern brought up the fact that he’d heard a story that Eddie and Alex “thought it would be a good idea to have a sexual relationship with you guys, because you’re sisters and they’re brothers.”

Nancy responded by commenting, “Sounds like a publicist’s kind of dream,” while Ann added, “Strange reasoning.”

Stern then asked Ann and Nancy if they recalled how the Van Halens brought up the topic.

“I think just during a long night of reveling,” Ann said.

Added Nancy, “Yeah, one of many bad ideas one night, you know, kind of thing.”

Stern then joked about how the Van Halen brothers might have phrased the proposition: “Wouldn’t it be great. We mate and we make future rock bands. It would be amazing!”

The Wilson Sisters Recall the Van Halen Brothers’ Heavy Partying

Nancy also noted that Heart had opened for Van Halen “a bunch” back in the day, and while on tour, she and Ann got to witness the brothers’ hard-partying ways.

“[T]hose Van Halen brothers, they were nuts,” she said. “They were really imbibers, and they were always in the bag, like way in the bag.”

Nancy also recalled that sometimes when Eddie and Alex would get drunk at a bar together, things would devolve into “fisticuffs.”

“They would just start fighting,” she remembered. “And then they’d be like, ‘Oh, I love you, man.’ And then they’d be hugging.”

Reflecting on getting to see the Van Halen brothers interact while Heart was on tour with them, Nancy noted, “[I]t was something to see.”

She added, “[T]hey were really solid brothers and cool people and musicians, and it was fun to know them and be part of the circus with them.”

Stern also asked the Wilson sisters if it shocked them that the Van Halens would get as drunk as they did, sometimes even before a concert.

“It kind of blew my mind,” Ann said. “I could never do that myself. … I’m not saying that I never imbibed back then. I did, but I always waited till after.”

Nancy concurred, “We waited till after the show.”

Heart’s 2024 Tour Plans

VIDEO: Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson Talk Partying With Van Halen, Opening for Rod Stewart, and Covering ‘Stairway to Heaven’ in Front of Led Zeppelin

Rock legends join the stern show ahead of upcoming “royal flush tour”.

One of the most celebrated rock bands of all time stopped by the Stern Show on Wednesday morning as Heart — featuring sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson — joined Howard and co-host Robin Quivers for an epic interview and live, in-studio concert. While the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ decades-long career has produced nine Top 10 hits, sold out countless arenas, and moved over 35 million records, the Wilson sisters told Howard they came from humble beginnings, growing up in a music-loving military family that moved around so often it might as well have been a touring band. As they explained it to Howard, the only constant in their lives back then was their passion for rock and roll, fueled in large part by their love of the Fab Four.

In 1970, Ann began singing in a band called White Heart. Over the next six years, the band moved to Canada, dropped “White” from its name, added Ann’s younger sister Nancy on guitar, and released its seminal debut “Dreamboat Annie,” which boasted blistering hits like “Crazy on You” and “Magic Man.” They were taking over the rock world, and by most accounts they were one of the first female-led acts to do it.

“We were just little military brats who thought we could just be the Beatles,” Nancy said of their early days. “So, why not? Who says no? We didn’t feel like we needed any kind of permission to go be a rock band … There was no rule about it, so we just did it.”

Heart toured with everyone from ZZ Top and Bachman-Turner Overdrive to Led Zeppelin in the ‘70s, but the band’s first break came in 1975 when they got a chance to open for Rod Stewart in Montreal.

“[His] opening act got sick,” Nancy said, explaining the timing was fortuitous because they’d just been fired from a regular gig in Alberta for daring to criticize the venue’s food.

“I think I said something like, ‘Gee, I hope you enjoy your Lysol dinner,’” Ann laughed. “Then the very next day we got this offer to come open up for Rod Stewart.”

“It was the biggest stage we’d ever been on,” Nancy told Howard. “We opened with ‘Magic Man,’ and the people of Montreal … put their lighters in the air. And we were like, ‘What? they know our song?’ It was a really stellar moment.”

Covering ‘Stairway to Heaven’ in Front of Page and Plant

Ann and Nancy have covered Led Zeppelin songs to perfection since the ‘70s, but they raised the bar on themselves at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012 when they teamed up with Jason Bonham to deliver an epic performance of “Stairway to Heaven.” The audience that night included not only Dave Grohl, Jack Black, and the Obamas, but also Led Zeppelin founders Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

“Robert Plant starts crying, I think, that’s how moved he is,” Howard said of the performance.

“He wells up a little bit,” Nancy agreed.

“[Plant was] emotional for a bunch of reasons,” Ann said, theorizing it also had something to do with watching Jason Bonham, the son of founding drummer John Bonham, play the drums. “[Jason] was probably just a little kid running around at their band practice when they were writing ‘Stairway to Heaven.’”

Honoring Led Zeppelin was a surreal experience for Ann and Nancy, who told Howard they didn’t even know which song they’d perform when they agreed to participate. Even so, the sisters needed only one rehearsal to get it just right. Nancy recalled the soundcheck, explaining it was so freezing cold out that day that her fingers needed time to warm up before she could play the guitar. “They offered to shadow [the guitar part] for me … but I was like ‘No, no, no, no — my hands are just cold. It’s okay.’”

“It had to be the real deal, like we do,” Nancy continued before vividly recalling the moment she and her sister took the stage: “We looked at each other and took a very deep breath. [It was] like a Zen gathering of yourself, centering and focusing. You just can’t screw that up.”

“You have to be absolutely present in the moment,” Ann agreed.

Most people thought the performance was perfection, but when Plant and Page gave their review that night at a star-studded celebratory dinner, the sisters weren’t sure what to expect. “Plant let us know that he usually hated people’s covers of ‘Stairway,’ but he liked that one,” Ann recalled.

“He said, ‘You guys pulled it off,” Nancy added. “And then Jimmy Page goes, ‘Wow, you nailed the guitar part. [It was] really great.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ … I could die.’”

On Chris Cornell Inducting Them Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

When Heart was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, the Wilson sisters were thrilled.

“I thought it was an honor,” Ann told Howard.

“It’s a complete honor,” Nancy agreed of the recognition. “It’s an award, yeah, which is kind of an acknowledgement for all of the hard work — the 10,000 hours and the travel and balancing family and home … it was a proud moment for us.”

It didn’t hurt that fellow Seattle rocker and friend Chris Cornell inducted them. “It was incredibly, insanely beautiful how he did it … I cry just thinking about it,” Nancy admitted before adding that it was the Soundgarden frontman’s idea to present them. “He volunteered and [I’m] so happy the way that worked out because, as it turns out, he’s gone now … you don’t get that stuff back.”

The guitarist also noted her experiences with the singer – who passed away tragically in 2017 — at some of Ann’s parties over the years. “He was always really quiet around us,” she recalled. “I just assumed he was stuck up because he was so talented and good-looking and had everything … [but] he was just kind of shy.”

“He had this special brand of gallows humor … dark humor,” Ann remembered. “When he met his end, I wasn’t really that surprised because he had laid breadcrumbs all the way through the time I knew him.”

She also remembered Cornell’s sense of humor – like when he dressed up as “Black Hole Sun,” one of Soundgarden’s biggest hits. “He came in this gigantic gold, paper lamé, full-bodied suit with his face blacked out,” the singer explained. “It was really cool.”

On Touring with the Devils in Van Halen

When Heart opened up for Van Halen on their World Vacation Tour in 1979, the Wilsons were taken aback by the wild ways of Eddie and Alex. “They were nuts,” Nancy said affectionally before acknowledging the brothers’ penchant for partying. “[They’d be] having cosmos and stuff and they would start fighting … and then they’d be like, ‘I love you, man’ and then they’d be hugging.”

“It was sure interesting to watch,” Ann recalled, adding that she was surprised their hosts got so inebriated before going onstage. “I could never do that myself … I’m not saying that I never imbibed back then — I did, but I always waited until after.”

As fellow sibling bands on tour, Eddie and Alex even once suggested things turn romantic, but the sisters didn’t take the bait. “Sounds like a publicist’s kind of dream,” Nancy cracked.

‘Magic Man’

Before the band kicked off a trio of performances with a thunderous version of “Magic Man,” the second single off “Dreamboat Annie,” Howard was curious about the song’s meaning. When he asked Ann if she was alluding to the title character’s prowess in the bedroom, the singer didn’t deny it. “The whole thing was magic,” she said with a smile.

In fact, when Ann’s boyfriend decided to move to Canada to avoid getting drafted during the Vietnam War, she decided to follow him. Wilson’s concerned mother confronted her about it, and that conversation fueled the song’s lyrics. “She was pretty Victorian,” the rocker explained. “The whole idea of me waltzing off to a different country with a man, and we were obviously going to be up to the devil’s business, didn’t sit well with her.”

‘Going to California’ Cover

Heart slowed things down for their next song, a cover of the beloved Led Zeppelin ballad “Going to California.” Howard wondered if this was a tune the sisters had perfected back in the ‘70s when they were known for their Led Zeppelin covers.

“We didn’t do the acoustic things yet in those days,” Ann told him. “But a song like ‘Going to California’ can’t be underrated just because it’s acoustic. It takes so much skill and discipline to play these acoustic guitars and the mandolin,” she continued. “It’s a storyteller song,” she added.

“It’s a second-nature type of acoustic song to me,” added Nancy as she readied her guitar. “It’s got that Celtic, Zeppelin-y, beautiful, wide-open, ‘on the moors’ kind of a feeling.”

‘Barracuda’

Closing the morning out with “Barracuda,” the sisters explained that a sleazy music industry-adjacent man who suggested they were also lovers inspired the track off 1977’s “Little Queen.”  “It just made me go, ‘God, I guess we’re in the entertainment business now,’” Ann recalled.

“That wasn’t the message we were trying to send,” Nancy added.

The guitarist then spoke on the track’s legendary riff. “I think it was an instant match for Ann’s vitriol,” she remarked before playing a snippet. “[It’s] very angry … there’s teeth involved.”

Robin Quivers Has a Heart to Heart … With Heart

Robin Quivers — a longtime Heart fan — couldn’t let the Wilson sisters go before telling them what they’ve meant to her. “This is very special for me, and I might cry,” she said, fighting back tears. “As a woman growing up loving rock and roll and just never having enough women expressing life through rock and roll … and having a woman’s point of view in rock and roll, thank God you guys came along.”

Robin went on to recall the a-ha moment she had upon first hearing Heart’s 1975 debut. “I was just like, ‘Oh my God!’” she said. “It’s not said enough how much influence you have had, [and] I love you to the bottom of my heart.”

Blown away by Robin’s words, Nancy expressed the band’s gratitude for being able to still rock out after all these years before addressing their lasting influence. “We didn’t have female models to follow … we had guys like Zeppelin,” the guitarist said. “And now, girls can follow people like us … Olivia Rodrigo and Boygenius and Taylor Swift – there’s a lot of empowerment going on with the new stuff that these cool women are up to.”

Heart’s “ Royal Flush Tour ” begins April 20.
