In this edition of the head to head fragrance comparisons, I’m going to be taking a look at two cheap options, from the brand Nautica. The two colognes are best sellers still, but which is the top wear: Nautica Classic vs. Voyage? I have worn each and will break them both down by category before declaring a winner. Which smells better? Which lasts longer? Which is the better buy?

Nautica Classic

Notes include: lime, sage, cedar, sandalwood, jasmine, lemon, amber, musk, and more

Voyage opens up with notes of apple, musk, and mimosa. It’s clean and has an aquatic feeling, but it isn’t oceanic, in its aroma. The crisp apple and mimosa create a watery sort of smell and this is layered with musk and some lotus flower.

Nautica Classic starts off with a clean blend of citrus with a fresh sea-like breeze to it. There is also a prominent jasmine note and some musk, which gives the scent a soapy sort of quality. Underneath this top is a woodsy/spicy blend with notes of sage, tarragon, and cinnamon.

Which is better? Nautica Classic has been reformulated and doesn’t really smell like how I remember it.

Nonetheless, I like how it starts off better than Voyage, which I never particularly enjoyed the first few minutes of. I like the citrus and spice blend and the soapy aroma isn’t too front and center, from the start.

Edge: Nautica

The sillage on Vyoage is pretty moderate. It is never loud or very bold, yet, it is quite consistent on my skin. It doesn’t just crap out, an hour in. Meanwhile, Classic, starts off about the same but it does weaken pretty darn fast. This is a case, where it was probably better in the past, but doesn’t compete now.

Edge: Voyage

What I like about Voyage, is that, you do get a pretty solid performance for a low price. It will last 5-7 hours, on my skin, and never feels all that weak to me. Classic will go for around 3-4 hours of wear. That’s disappointing.

Versatility

These two fragrances pretty much occupy the same space, as to when they should be worn. Both are best in warm weather, but fine for year round wear.

Both are better for casual situations, school, or maybe the office. They aren’t nighttime, club scents, or romantic wears. There’s no real separation between them.

Overall Scent

It’s difficult to do this comparison now. Nautica Classic isn’t the same as it was in the 1990s, from the actual smell, to the performance. I know that I smelled the old formulation, at the time, but it’s really hard to remember a scent from 25 years ago.

As such, I can only describe what it is now. The smell itself is nice enough. You get an upbeat citrus with aquatic elements up top. Herbal spice and jasmine, with some woodiness in the dry down. It is later pretty fresh and soapy.

The problem is, the scent really doesn’t perform well anymore. Yes, it’s only around $10 a bottle, but it could definitely be better than it is. For those reasons, I cannot give it an edge versus Voyage.

Voyage, still smells better in my opinion, and has the performance to back it up. I’m not a huge fan of how it starts, but I do like the dry down quite a lot. There’s a reason it’s basically the best selling cheap men’s cologne. It wins this match up, but honestly, you can grab a bottle of each for under $25…so it’s not too much of a stretch to just wear both.

If you’re a big fan of aquatic scents and on the lookout for one, chances are that have recently narrowed your options to two fragrances: Nautica Blue and Nautica Voyage.

This cologne features a breath-taking top note of apple and green leaf before moving to a warm heart note of dewy mimosa and lotus.

After a few minutes, it settles into the intoxicating smell of a woody base that features amber , musk, moss, and cedar. 

Considered a great scent that attracts women , Nautica Voyage was inspired by the confident, ultra-masculine male character who is everything a woman dreams of.

Its romantic woody scent will win you lots of compliments and admirers, and it is the kind of aroma you need to impress any woman on a dinner date.

Nautica Blue vs Nautica Voyage – Comparison

Voyage and Blue feature a noticeable difference in their opening notes.

Although an aquatic cologne, Voyage features a strong citrus scent in its opening notes, while Blue features a prominent aquatic scent. 

An interesting side note is that some users believe Blue also hints a faint juicy scent in its opening notes, but what can’t be disputed, is that Voyage features the prominent citrus scent.

There isn’t much of a competition on this ground as both perfumes feature opening notes that differ but not necessarily in quality. 

There are people who prefer Voyage’s fruity smell while others are more in tune with the smell of Blue’s cedar note. Basically, it’s all about preference.

If you’re big on perfumes with incredible projections, you may be a little disappointed with what Nautica Blue and Voyage have to offer.

These two perfumes both feature moderate projections. 

A closer observation shows that Nautica Voyage has a slightly heavier sillage than Blue.

Unless you’re hoping to make a show-stopping entrance, Blue and Voyage present decent projections, but if you want the cologne with the extra bit, you should go with Voyage.

There’s a clear winner here, and it’s Voyage.

The cologne with a fruity projection can give you over 7 hours of its refreshing smell while Blue can only give between 2 to 4 hrs. 

You won’t find both on the list of top-performing perfumes with incredible longevity, but you can appreciate that Voyage gives you enough juice to get through a day at work or a social event in style.

If you’re crazy about perfumes that can give you long hours of unadulterated performance, then perhaps you may want to consider choosing Voyage over Blue.

Versatility

Nautica perfumes are famed for the rather casual vibes they exude and the same can be said for these two perfumes.

They are both perfect to wear to any social event but also decent options to wear to work. 

Blue smells more professional with its woodsy notes while Voyage is more of a confidence booster and could be described as projecting a sensual aroma.

If you’re diligent in your choice of colognes, then you would do well to choose Blue for official outfits while Voyage works better for social events. 

The more versatile choice between the two colognes would be Voyage and that’s mostly because its longevity means it could get you through a hot summer day without wearing off too quickly.

Final Verdict

If you’re a lover of woody aquatic scents , there’s no doubt that Nautica Blue is a great cologne.

Its projection is clean, fresh, and gives an enjoyable urban flavor. 

However, when compared with the Nautica Voyage, Blue simply does not give an overwhelming performance.

Voyage presents better longevity, a more versatile scent, and a slightly better projection. 

The only slight advantage Blue has over Voyage is a slightly cheaper price, but they are both so cheap that you won’t be too bothered to pay a few extra dollars to buy Voyage. 

Before you choose either colognes, it is important to state your priorities.

If you’re more interested in the woodsy aquatic smell, then you may go for Blue, but if you’re looking to buy the cologne with overall better performance, then you should go for Voyage.

Nautica Voyage Vs. Voyage N-83: [Thorough Comparison 2024]

Many designer and niche brands produce perfumes that gain a monumental fanbase, and it eventually leads to them producing many flankers of the original.

While some of the flankers fail to sustain, a few of them manage to gather more followers than the original.

Two, I will compare perfumes – Voyage and Voyage N-83 by Nautica, an original and its flanker- to find out which has a better scent and which has a better performance.

So, if you have been confused about which one to get between these two, then read till the end.

Nautica Voyage

Launched in 2006, Voyage was created by Maurice Roucel. Voyage has an air of late spring and early summer. It is a perfume for the sea. However, one that has a distinct aquatic, summertime vibe.

Compared to other Nautica fragrances, it has a less oceanic aroma. Voyage is gentler and more influenced by the woods. Amber lingers in the background, adding a touch of warmth to the scent. Rather than having only an oceanic scent, Voyage has a crisp, aqueous aroma.

Nautica Voyage N-83

Main Notes: Sea Notes, Spicy Mint, Petitgrain, Lavender, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Musk, Sandalwood and Cedar

Voyage N-83 is a flanker of the popular Voyage by Nautica, and it was launched in 2013.

The “sea tones” give N-83 a distinct oceanic aroma when it first starts up. It seems less similar to the first Voyage to me. Despite having an aquatic feel, this one is sharper than the original.

N-83 is a change from the original Voyage, which included citrus fruit notes such as orange; nonetheless, it still opts to go with something that is crisp and clean, with undertones of musk and soft lavender.

Now that you know a basic summary of the scents and their main accords let’s dig into the scents and find out how they compare.

Here is my thorough comparison between Nautica Voyage and Nautica Voyage N-83:

Even though they are both aquatic fragrances, there is a notable difference between the opening of Voyage and N-83.

Apple, watery, mimosa, and some overt musk notes are present in the opening of Voyage. It has a perfume that is generally associated with cucumber or dew—a cold, watery scent. It smells faintly aquatic but not marine.

The aroma has a green/floral undertone with damp moss and lotus/mimosa underneath all of it.

On the other hand, in the case of N-83, a cold, spicy mint with a tinge of petitgrain greets you at the top. At first, it smells slightly herbal with lighter musk, and the oceanic note pervades the entire composition.

So, which one has a more appealing opening?

Simply put, Nautica Voyage is more perceptible and enjoyable. You immediately detect a crisp, watery apple aroma with a touch of sweetness.

The distinctive addition of mimosa, cedar, and musk further distinguished Voyage.

So, in terms of opening scent, Voyage is more impressive than its flanker, N-83.

Though not particularly strong, Voyage is perceivable and projects fairly effectively.

However, the range of N-83 is somewhat constrained, and it has a tendency to be on the weaker side. It doesn’t fully fade away after five minutes, but it isn’t particularly strong either.

While not the biggest offender, N-83 falls short of what Voyage offers. So, between the two, Voyage has a better projection.

In the case of projection, I have noticed a similar trend. Voyage lasts evidently longer than N-83.

While Voyage can last anywhere between 5 to 7 hours, N-83 usually lasts for 3 to 6 hours max.

So, which one performs better?

In terms of projection and longevity, Voyage performs better than its flanker, N-83, in both cases. 

Many people use fragrance to leave a positive impression on others. Some of us have an unwavering desire to spread our perfumes, hoping that others will like them as much as we do.

We all enjoy hearing about how great a perfume smells; therefore, it only makes sense to compare the compliment factors of the two perfumes, Voyage and Voyage N-83.

From what I have noticed, strangers have given both scents favorable reviews. Since they are clean and have aquatic scents, they are quite likable, especially in hot summers.

However, since Voyage has a fruity touch to it, it tends to grab people’s attention more effectively, earning you more compliments than its flanker.

Hence, when comparing how many compliments each perfume gets you, Voyage has the upper hand and is more likely to get you a lot of praise compared to N-83.

Both of these are fantastic everyday scents that make you smell wonderful wherever you wear them. I actually wouldn’t classify either as a date-night scent, though Voyage would have somewhat of an upper hand in this case.

Since N-83 is less overpowering, it might be a marginally superior workplace fragrance. Voyage isn’t too loud and can also be worn to work.

In terms of affordable scents, both Voyage and N-83 are really useful. No, neither product is of extremely high quality, but they can be very handy.

In conclusion, both of them are equally versatile.

When choosing between two perfumes, comparing their prices is essential to figure out which one is giving you the best product at a cheaper price. In other words, comparing their value for the price.

Now, Nautica is known for producing great fragrances at an affordable price, and these two perfumes are no exception.

The price of Nautica Voyage Eau De Toilette is $18.90 for the size 3.4 fl oz / 100 ml. On the other hand, Voyage N-83 Eau De Toilette costs around $23.88 for the same size.

As you can see, there is no big difference between their prices, and both are quite budget-friendly. However, when compared, the price of Nautica Voyage is somewhat less than N-83.

Nonetheless, the prices of these fragrances vary quite a bit from store to store and website to website, so I suggest you list out and compare the prices on different websites and buy the one that offers the best deal.

So, which one offers the best value for the money between Voyage and N-83?

Even though both are affordable, by comparing the prices, it is evident that Voyage offers the best value for money between these two perfumes as the same size Voyage is cheaper than N-83. 

Finally, it’s time to compare these two perfumes’ scent profiles and overall scent. To be honest, both Voyage and N-83 have decent overall scents.

N-83 is an excellent fragrance, yet, it is quite linear in nature and lacks any truly outstanding qualities. Because of the lavender note, it has a pleasant and fresh aroma that can be described as marine, soapy, and silky.

On the other hand, Voyage is aquatic with a wonderful citrus smell; it has been a customer favorite for a very long time and continues to be our top selling.

While N-83 is most likely not even among the top Nautica colognes, Voyage is a wonderful addition to the collection of anybody who wears it because of its affordable price and a pleasant aroma.

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Voyage is Nautica’s finest production.

Since both of these are reasonably priced, you might as well get both of them if you want some diversity in your life. If I could only choose one, it would have to be Voyage.

So, I must say that in the case of overall scent, Voyage is the winner.

Both Nautica Voyage and Nautica Voyage N-83 are wonderful scents from the same line. While the flanker, N-83, is quite aromatic, the original smells much better to my nose.

The oceanic fragrance with the added citrus notes feels bright and rejuvenating. The oakmoss, amber and cedar ground the perfume and tie all the accords together, creating a fine balance.

However, which one you decide to opt for depends solely on your preferences.

When I first heard about Nautica fragrances I thought, Hmm, just another American sportswear brand releasing sporty fragrances that smell exactly the same. But after trying on a few, I was proven wrong. I quickly became hooked to some as they were exactly my type of scent.

Contrary to popular belief, Nautica colognes don’t smell the same. They all have their own unique qualities, just like the Nautica Blue and the Nautica Voyage. I put together this roundup to help clarify the difference between these two bestsellers, but also to let you know which one I think is better.

Nautica Blue

Nautica Blue belongs to the Aromatic Aquatic family. Launched in 2005, this Eau de Toilette for men concocted by Maurice Roucel is still one of Nautica’s best sellers.

The ocean-inspired Nautica Blue opens with citrusy top notes of bergamot, mellowed down with pineapple and peach tones. As it develops, subtle middle notes of Water Lily and jasmine reveal, and eventually the composition dries down to sweet base notes of sandalwood, musk, and cedar.

I first tried Nautica Bleu three years after it came out. I was instantly drawn by the shape of the bottle resembling a spinnaker sail. At first spray, I smelt familiar notes: a fresh, clean, masculine, and musky scent that I get from almost all blue bottles in any brand. After a few hours, I started to like it better, and then that was it. Gone. There was a slight trail of the Blue somewhere on my clothes and my, skin but nothing striking or turning heads.

Being light and not overpowering means I can wear it in the hot and humid weather, and being so cheap (I find it for $12) means I can reapply as much as I want to. I have no trouble wearing it during the day, to work, at the gym, right after showering, or as casual wear. I, however, prefer stronger and long-lasting scents for the evenings.

There are a few men’s colognes that I found that are pretty similar smelling to Nautica Blue. Dolce&Gabanna Light Blue Intense, for example, a woody aquatic scent, opens similarly to Nautica Blue, with citrusy notes such as grapefruit and mandarin orange. Bvlgari Aqua Pour Homme is the classic fresh aquatic cologne that most blue bottles smell like and so is the case with Nautica Blue. Davidoff Cool Water is this fresh and woody cologne that reminds me of racing, sea, waves, and the ocean, that’s exactly what Nautica Blue represents.

Azzaro Chrome has also similar notes and opens with bergamot and pineapple, just like the Nautica Blue. Lastly, if you like Nautica Blue but find it a little too gentle on your skin, try Ralph Lauren Polo Sport. Its fresh, energizing, and woodsy notes will never disappoint. If you’ve tried any of these and you like the fresh and aquatic scent, you have an idea how the Nautica Blue smells. Except, Nautica Blue does not perform as well as the alternatives mentioned.

The takeaway from Nautica Blue

To sum it up, Nautica Blue is an inexpensive cologne for men that I don’t mind having in my collection. It is a safe buy, smells fresh, clean, and sporty, and it makes me smell good for a few hours without being offensive to the people in my surrounding. But unless you don’t mind reapplying, Nautica Blue’s performance leaves a lot to be desired.

Nautica Voyage

Nautica Voyage was launched in 2006, a year later after the Nautica Bleu. The nose behind this cologne is again Maurice Roucel. Unlike the Aromatic Nautica Blue, the Voyage is a Woody Aquatic fragrance that opens with fruity and green top notes like apple and green leaves. There is a warm heart note of mimosa and lotus which blends well with the base notes of musk, cedar, amber, and oakmoss, leaving a heavy musky trail behind.

To me, Nautica Voyage smells romantic, fresh, sweet, and masculine, a scent I like to wear on summer nights. Surprisingly enough, it lasts me the entire evening and goes well into the morning but is much softer, almost powdery.

It is an inexpensive cologne, one I can grab when I am in a rush. It never fails to keep me fresh.

However, over the years the scent has been reformulated and while the previous bottles had a metal cap the new ones come with a plastic cap. Although they smell very similar, the performance in the reformulated is not as long-lasting as the previous batches. But I still get about 5-7 hours of freshness.

The cologne reminds me of a Tommy Bahama for Men because I can smell the exotic, sweet, and summery notes. With Nautica Voyage being less sweet and overpowering. Though it’s a perfume for women, there is something in Escada Into The Blue that is so similar to Nautica Voyage. It could be the green notes in the opening or the woodsy tones in the dry down. In any case, I find that this scent smells somehow very similar to Nautica Voyage.

The takeaway from Nautica Voyage

All in all, Nautica Voyage is a classic fresh scent from Nautica, and at $20 it is worth a blind buy. Longevity and sillage are moderate, lasting you long enough to run errands, or go to after-work cocktails. It is not even nearly offensive, which means you can even wear it to the gym, or at your doctor’s appointment.

The verdict: Nautica Blue Vs Nautica Voyage

With all being said, now it’s time to decide which of the two best sellers is the right one to buy. Both Nautica Blue and Nautica Voyage have a strong opening, one that resembles a clean and fresh shower gel. In a few hours the Nautica Blue slowly disappears, while the Nautica Voyage lasts throughout the day and well into the night and the following morning, with no need to reapply.

When I wear Nautica Blue I feel energetic, outgoing, and sporty, I feel like going on an adventure hiking the mountains or sailing, whereas Nautica Voyage gives me a more sophisticated feel. Hence, I prefer to wear it on a romantic date, night out with friends, and at work meetings.

Both of these colognes are popular, and a good reason for that is the low price. While Nautica Blue comes in 0.5oz, 1.7oz, and 3.4oz, and goes for $20 for the large size, the Nautica Voyage is available in 1.6oz, 3.38oz, and 6.7 oz for $35, making it a better value for money.

While both scents suit me well, I still prefer Nautica Voyage better. I fancy warm woody notes and this cologne hits those spots. It is impossible to hate, and I get a lot more compliments on the Nautica Voyage compared to Nautica Blue. What’s more, Nautica Voyage lasts me throughout the day, and goes into the next morning, without having to reapply. I wake up to a soft, musky, floral scent that I’d like to keep just a little longer before I jump in the shower.

If you are after a fresh cologne, that is safe to wear any time of the day or evening, with a good performance, and one that won’t hurt your budget, then Voyage is one of the best choices out there. It is versatile and appealing and will win you tons of compliments.

Launched a year earlier, in 2005, Nautica Blue is another eau de toilette to be worn during warmer months. This spring and summer fragrance is most appropriate during the day but if you’re sailing the seas or hanging out on a beach at night, there’s no reason why you can’t reapply this fragrance at night.

Also aquatic, Nautica Blue is fruitier and more aromatic than Nautica Voyage. It’s also more of a close to skin fragrance. Sillage is mild. This scent lasts for a few hours during the day and will need to be reapplied if you want to continue smelling it in the afternoon.

Nautica Blue’s fragrance profile includes:

Nautica Voyage vs Blue: Face to Face Features

Prolific perfumer Maurice Roucel was the nose behind both fragrances and both are eau de toilettes, which explains why they perform best during the day. Neither one is designed to be worn for a full day into the evening.

While reapplication is possible and should be carried out if that’s your preference, these scents were designed to keep you fragrant during the day.

Nonetheless, you’ll receive an inexpensive fragrance that lasts at least four hours. The benefit of purchasing Nautica fragrances, though, is that they don’t smell like you’d expect a fragrance at their price point to smell like.

Neither one smells oddly perfumy, like the watered-down scents created for children to play with or young teens to wear.

Nautica Voyage vs Nautica Blue: Side by Side Comparison

Since all of Nautica’s fragrances are aquatic, comparisons between them have to be more nuanced.

As you can tell by the chart, Nautica Blue is a fruitier scent, highlighting white floral notes with a woody base. Nautica Voyage on the other hand is fresher and has a sweeter woody base.

Due to its more prominent sillage , you’re more likely to get noticed while wearing Nautica Voyage. If you’re desiring for your scent to be noticeable, then you’ll want to choose Voyage over Blue.

Nautica Blue’s sillage is more intimate, meaning others will likely only smell it once they hug you or are in close proximity to you.

Nautica Voyage Stand Out Feature: Expanded Collection

Over the years Coty expanded the Nautica Voyage collection. There are three additional scents, two of which are equally aquatic but all three have varying additional accords.

The three scents are Nautica Voyage N-83, Nautica Voyage Sport, and Nautica Voyage Heritage.

This is an aromatic aquatic fragrance that was released in 2013. The 100 mL (3.4 fl oz) bottle is within the same price range as the original Nautica Voyage.

Named for the founding year of the company, 1983, Nautica Voyage N-83 has more longevity, but don’t expect the same longevity as an eau de parfum.

Sillage is still moderate.

It’s a bolder, more vibrant fragrance than the original Voyage. This one has more fresh notes and the addition of spicy and herbal accords.

Nautica Voyage Sport Eau de Toilette Spray

Released in 2016, Nautica Voyage Sport is a woody aromatic. The bottle volume is 100 mL (3.4 fl oz).

This is another casual scent to be worn during the day. Longevity and sillage are mediocre. Voyage Sport is much lighter than Voyage, so keep that in mind when making your choice.

The fragrance notes are also more complex; it’s a combination that not everyone gravitates to, so if you purchase this one, you may want to also buy one that you are more convinced you’ll enjoy wearing in case this one doesn’t appeal to you.

Voyage Heritage is the most herbal and you can expect mediocre sillage and longevity.

If you’re looking to shake it up a bit with a fresh but unique fragrance, then Voyage Sport might be most appealing to you. For a slightly stronger version of Nautica Voyage, try Voyage N-83. The last one, Voyage Heritage isn’t aquatic at all but does offer fresh herbal notes before drying down to woody notes.

There was another Nautica Blue fragrance released in 2017. It’s called Nautica Blue Sail, but its fragrance notes closely resemble Nautica Voyage, which I thought odd, so I didn’t think it merited a review.

Nautica Voyage and Nautica Blue are nice fragrances to add to your spring and summer collection. They both offer good value for the amount that you’re charged and will last on your skin at least half the day.

Choose Nautica Voyage if:

• You want a nice but inexpensive fragrance
• You prefer fresh and woody fragrance accords
• You’re looking for a day fragrance for spring and summer

Choose Nautica Blue if:

• You prefer fruitier, more aromatic fragrances
• You don’t mind a scent with low sillage
