WiseYatra’s communication prior to and during the trip was great! The overall accommodations were good and centrally located… a big plus! The tours and sightseeing were a good mix of city and nature. The historical information and fun facts were well appreciated!! I would highly recommend adding the Montreal Botanical Garden in the sightseeing schedule. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting this time of the year! Airport pick up could be a little smoother. If it is someone new to travel in Canada, I would highly recommend having the pickup person inside the airport, at the international arrival gate, with their name easily readable on a sign. This will help to put people at ease and off to a good start of a beautiful vacation.

The tour itself was fantastic the tour guides were great hotels were fabulous If you only have a short time then this is perfect lots to see and we’ll organised My only issue was when we arrived at the said location to start the check in was chaos You need to have a list with peoples names making sure they are at the correct place and know which bus they are on and the buses were full do we did not even think we were getting on so it was very stressful Anyway once on all good Fabulous trip highly recommend From Josephine Sydney Australia

What people love about niagara falls tours.

Our trip was in Eastern Canada the first of July 2023. It was a nightmare to figure out how to get to our hotel from the train and subways, up and down soooo many stairs then walking the rest of the way with our luggage mind you. Definitely call for a ride to the hotel. Our first hotel was nice in Toronto. Niagara Falls was fun and definitely something to experience. The tour buses on our whole trip were comfortable and we had great drivers, especially Mike. He was so personable and took really good care of us! The second hotel in Ottawa was good too but when we went to Quebec City that was the worst hotel I’ve ever been in! The beds were uncomfortable, the air conditioner didn’t work well at all, and the shower was messed up and only ran hot water. Then the water wouldn’t shut off so we had to call someone to shut it off with tools. The tub didn’t have anything on the bottom for you to not slip so I slipped getting in and tore the towel rack down which was just glued on. I ended up having to place a towel in the shower where we could take a shower and not fall down. The people that worked there were rude. The carpet in the hallways was disgusting and coming up which is a major trip hazard. One couple that was on the tour with us showed me a piece of metal that fell from his ceiling in his room and hit him in the head. We had to stay two miserable nights there! Our next hotel in Montreal was okay and the last hotel they put us in back in Toronto was a very nice hotel and had a wonderful breakfast. Our guide was nice and informative too. We enjoyed seeing everything we did either while in the bus or walking around the cities. I’m not sure if I will do another group tour or not. Guess we’ll see….
5 stars for the sights, scenery, hotels and food. Janet did a great job stepping up as our guide. She prepared us for the day ahead giving us details and times and was sensitive to our needs. Domingo did a great job driving. He can turn that bus on a dime.

When I tell you I had the time of my life on this tour. My husband and I ended up the only ones which was very cool. Our guide Peter was so great, patient, and enthusiastic. My God the wines…. My husband who formally claimed he wasn’t a fan of wine and didn’t like red left a different man! I swear he enjoyed it more than I did Haha All the wineries were lovely. The staff were awesome. Never felt rushed or pressured. There is no way you can leave disappointed! -Cassidy ( see more reviews )

21. Niagara-on-the-Lake Wine Tour with Lunch -Private Tour in Classic English Cab

One of the most unique tours in Niagara Falls involved an old British car.

⭐️  RATING:  5 out of 5 Stars (39+ reviews) | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  4 Hours | 🚀  BOOK NOW

If you’re looking for a truly unique way to enjoy the wine region of Niagara Falls, this tour is for you! Enjoy an in-depth and indulgent introduction to the esteemed Niagara wine region on this private tour in a classic London black cab . Meet your guide at your Niagara Falls or Niagara-on-the-Lake hotel, hop aboard your vehicle for the day, and head out to try some of Ontario’s best wines. You’ll get an introduction to winemaking and will enjoy a tutored tasting. Following a multi-course lunch at a gourmet restaurant, or an outside picnic lunch (weather dependent), venture to four other wineries to sample numerous other varietals.

I have done several wine tours and this was by FAR the greatest one. Tom, our driver, was very knowledgeable of the area, took us to see beautiful sites when we had extra time between wineries and took wonderful care of us! The novelty of touring around in the English can was totally worth it – so fun! I highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves NOTL or is looking to experience it for the first time! A+ -Kathleen ( see more reviews )

WHY CHOOSE US?

We are locally owned right here in Niagara Falls.

We strive to be ambassadors, supporters and protectors of the land and people that make up Niagara Falls Canada.

our Niagara Falls tour philosophy

Ever since we decided to launch our Niagara Falls tour company the mandate has been to accomplish several key goals.

  • Include the most popular attractions
  • Offer a unique experience
  • Do it all for a fair price

Niagara Falls tours for a good cause

A portion of every tour booked with us goes to Niagara Falls Community Outreach who serve over 53,000 meals each year to those who need it most.

Environmentally friendly Niagara Falls tours

Walking tours are the best way to experience Niagara Falls, but another important benefit is how environmentally friendly they are. As more people start to factor in environmental impact levels into their travel decision making, the popularity of walking tours continues to rise.

5 Reasons We Give The Best Niagara Falls Tours

Still need convincing?

These are the reasons that make us a cut above when it comes to tours of Niagara Falls Canada.

#1. WE KNOW AND LOVE NIAGARA FALLS

Our fully licensed tour guides live and work in Niagara Falls Canada all year round and have decades of experience offering tours in Niagara Falls. They have a real love and passion for what they do.

Whether it’s sharing interesting stories about local history or showing first timers a spectacular sight of the Falls that they will never forget, we love to see and hear peoples reactions to what our area has to offer.

#2. PRIORITY ACCESS TO ATTRACTIONS

We begin each of our tours in the morning to make sure our groups are near the front of the attraction lines to avoid long waits. We take care of all the logistics related to attraction tickets and access so all you need to do is enjoy yourself!

#3. WALKING IS THE BEST WAY TO SEE THE CITY

Yes we provide walking tours, but there’s not that much actual walking involved. Most of the tour time is spent participating in the attractions and enjoying the sights.

While you’ll still want to make sure you’re prepared for the elements depending on the forecast , all in you’re only looking at around 50 minutes of total walking spread throughout the 4 hour long tour.

#4. WE CATER TO COUPLES AND FAMILIES

Whether you’re in a large group, a part of a couple or on your own we are excited to give you a world class walking tours experience. Please note that due to access limitations and the nature of walking tours we are unable to cater to strollers and wheelchairs.

#5. BEST VALUE IN TOWN!

We operate a lean tour business and pass the savings onto you. We are objectively one of the least expensive tours of Niagara Falls with comparable length and included attractions.

Our walking tours really are the BEST way to experience Niagara Falls Canada!

Niagara Falls Canada – Respect Our Planet

Learn more about how Niagara City Cruises is committed to respecting our crew, guests, and the natural environment. Click here to learn more.

Niagara Falls is a natural phenomenon that attracts millions of tourists every year. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, there are plenty of things to do in Niagara Falls that will make your trip unforgettable.

Niagara Falls History

The history of Niagara Falls is as vast and beautiful as the falls themselves. About 12,000 years ago, erosion from melting Ice Age glaciers created the Niagara River’s majestic waterfalls, which run along the border between Canada and the United States. These natural marvels are one of North America’s most popular tourist destinations in Niagara Falls State Park.

Due to its location on the southern end of Lake Erie and at the beginning of Lake Ontario, this region has always been an important transportation corridor for travelers heading westward across North America.

Fun Activities in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls has something fun for everyone in your group, regardless of age. Here are a few of the most popular activities people do when visiting Niagara Falls.

Take a Boat Cruise

Niagara Falls is best experienced by taking a boat cruise. However, get closer than most tourists by taking an evening cruise where you can see how different lights play off each other at night. Niagara City Cruises is the official supplier to Niagara Parks, providing Canada’s only Niagara Falls boat tour experience.

Niagara City Cruises – Voyage to the Falls

Outdoor Recreation

Niagara Falls parks, trails and gardens are easily accessible to biking, hiking, walking – or even just a nice afternoon picnic. The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens offers 40 hectares (99 acres) of beautifully maintained gardens to explore and is home to the Butterfly Conservatory , providing a truly enriching experience for all seasons. The heart of the Niagara Parks, Queen Victoria Park celebrates every season in style with a visual spectacle, from daffodils and tulips in spring to tree branches covered with the freezing mist of the Falls in winter. Niagara gardens such as the Parks Floral Showhouse , Centennial Lilac Garden , Floral Clock , Dufferin Islands , Oakes Garden Theatre and Queenston Heights Park provide inspiration and delight. Whether by foot or bike, discover 56 kilometers (35 miles) of historical and horticultural sights along the Niagara River Recreational Trail , described by Sir Winston Churchill as “the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world.” The Recreational Trail connects Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake , meandering through parkland with views of the Niagara River and winding past places of historical and cultural interest, Niagara Falls, wineries, lookout points and beautiful homes.

Book a Tour

Local companies offer sightseeing tours of Niagara and the Falls, while visitors may also indulge a particular interest with a themed Niagara tour. Niagara wine tours traverse the region in search of the perfect Chardonnay, double decker tours lend a different perspective to the city, or Niagara adventure tours take visitors on a whirlwind of the area’s most exciting attractions.

Taking a tour in Niagara Falls will allow you to interact with knowledgeable tour guides that can give you all the valuable tid- bits of everything Niagara. Often times they take the burden a way of finding your way, parking and in some cases front of the line options at Niagara Falls attractions. Taking a combination tour between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls is a great way to spend the week in Niagara.

Go Shopping

Head to the Canada One Factory Outlet on Lundy’s Lane with over 20 brand name stores or visit the Outlet Collection in Niagara-on-the-Lake , a unique open air collection of over 100+ brand name stores.

Within the heart of the tourist district there are also many shopping options. On Clifton Hill there are a number of shops where you can pick up souvenirs from your visit to Niagara Falls.

If you are looking for shopping decadence then we would recommend the Fallsview Casino Resort Shopping Galleria , great shops integrated with great restaurants and a Casino right there for a one stop shopping experience.

See the Falls from Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower is a 456-foot tower with a 360-degree observation deck, giving fantastic views of the falls. You can also see Lake Ontario, Navy Island, and Toronto.

Walk Across the Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge that spans the Niagara River between Rainbow Boulevard in Niagara Falls, New York, and Prospect Avenue in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The bridge was built in 1938 by the Canadian Pacific Railway company to carry passengers between both sides of the river. Still, it is now open to pedestrians 24 hours a day and year-round. Canada and the United States have designated the structure as a National Historic Civil Engineering Site. In addition, it won an award for its beauty at its dedication ceremony.

Take a Helicopter Tour

Helicopter tours are a great way to see the falls from a different perspective. While you won’t be able to fly directly over the falls, you can see them from above. You’ll also get breathtaking views of Lake Ontario and its surrounding towns. Book your tour in advance because they sell out quickly on busy days.

Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries in Niagara Falls

Niagara Ontario Canada has become famous for its wines. Whether you are looking for wineries in the Niagara Region, or a specific winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake , Niagara is gaining international recognition as ‘must visit’ destination to enjoy a beautiful country escape with a bit of food and drink. Twenty-five vineyards dot the landscape just 15 to 20 minutes outside Niagara Falls, Canada in quiet and charming Niagara on-the-Lake. The entire Niagara wine region along the shores of Lake Ontario is home to over 50 wineries. Discover the best of the region’s vineyards by following the Wine Route of Ontario through the countryside by car, bike or guided tour . Many Niagara wineries have restaurants, where they pair their fine wines with regional cuisine, and an overnight outing can easily be arranged at nearby a bed-and-breakfast or inn for a Niagara Falls romantic getaway . And if you fall in love with our wine, consider planning a Niagara vacation around one of our popular annual Niagara festivals . The Niagara Wine Festival, which occurs annually in autumn, includes tours and tastings at Niagara vineyards, concerts, Niagara cuisine, artisan shows, and family entertainment. The Niagara Icewine Festival in January celebrates Ontario’s most famous wine in a winter wonderland setting, and the Niagara New Vintage Festival in summer gives visitors a chance to be the first to try the year’s wines.

Visit Old Fort Erie

Old Fort Erie is a National Historic Site of Canada. It was built in 1812, making it one of the first buildings in Fort Erie. This fort was a key site during the War of 1812 and played an important part in Canadian history.

This remarkable site features three main attractions:

The restored Officers’ Quarters: houses exhibits that discuss life within a military garrison.

The Blockhouse: a fortified structure with artifacts from several wars, including American Independence, War of 1812, and World War II.

The Museum exhibits military life, including uniforms and weapons used by soldiers.

Ride the Niagara SkyWheel

If you like to get out of your comfort zone, then the Niagara SkyWheel is for you. The tallest observation wheel in Canada, the SkyWheel, is located on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls. It has 42 air-conditioned gondolas that can fit up to 8 people each and offers spectacular views of both sides of the falls (especially at night). The best part? It’s open year-round.

Dine Looking at the Falls

Table Rock House Restaurant is located in the Table Rock complex, known for its views of Niagara Falls. The restaurant has a seasonal outdoor patio and indoor seating with great views of the falls. So whether you sit in the dining room or at the bar, you can enjoy your meal while looking out at one of nature’s most legendary displays: Niagara Falls.

Experience the Theatre in Niagara Falls

When looking for theatre or shows in Niagara Falls, there’s an eclectic choice of Niagara entertainment for the entire family at one of our many theatres. Enjoy a Las Vegas style magic show at the Greg Frewin Theatre , or see dramatic productions chronicling the history of Niagara Falls at the Niagara Falls Adventure Theatre . From family-friendly entertainment to a couples-night-out, select from one of these shows for a well-rounded Niagara Falls getaway.

If you’re a theatre buff then you’ve heard of the famous Shaw Festival Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake . Only minutes away from Niagara Falls, the Shaw Theatre host an amazing selection of must-see live theatre productions.

What is the Best Time of Year to See Niagara Falls?

The peak tourist season is summer. However, spring and fall provide for a quiet getaway if you prefer not to deal with crowds and long lines.

However, not to be overlooked, Niagara Falls has a breathtaking calm during winter when ice and snow turn the Falls into a majestic winter castle.

The weather at Niagara Falls can dramatically affect whether your trip will go smoothly or turn into a disaster zone. Between June and September (and even into early October), the average temperature is in the 80s. Spring and fall temperatures range from 40F to 70F, while the cold Canadian wind keeps winter below zero.

Make sure to wear layers no matter when you visit Niagara Falls, so you are prepared for any weather changes.

Is Niagara Falls in Canada or New York?

Niagara Falls is located in both countries because it lies on the border between Canada and the United States. However, activities, dining, accommodations, and shopping vary significantly between the Canadian and American sides.

Do I Need a Passport to Go to Niagara Falls, Canada?

Yes. A Passport (or a Passport Card or Enhanced Driver’s License if coming by land) is required for crossing the border into Canada unless you are age 15 or younger. Please visit the government website for any further details.

The Whirlpool Aero Car operates between early April and early November. Admission is CA$17.50 (about $13) for adults 13 and older and CA$11.50 (roughly $8.50) for kids between 3 and 12 years old. Tours begin at 10 a.m. every day except Wednesday, when the attraction opens at noon; closing time is 5, 6 or 7 p.m., depending on the day of the week.

7 Best Hotels In Niagara Falls With A View Of The Falls

N iagara Falls is one of the natural wonders of the world. One of the best ways to experience the sheer magnitude and beauty, and even feel the thunder, of the falls is to stay at a hotel with a view of them. Such hotels can be found in the area of Niagara Falls aptly named “Fallsview.”

Accommodations with the best view of Niagara Falls can be much more expensive than a basic room and you can encounter rainy and foggy weather which will limit your view. Nonetheless, having a room with a view remains a very special way to see the falls in an intimate setting away from the crowds.

These are the best hotels with a view in Niagara Falls , Canada.

Niagara Falls Tourism hosted my 2-day visit to Niagara Falls, however, all opinions are my own.

1. Embassy Suites Niagara Falls Hotel

I recently stayed at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Fallsview , and the view from my suite was spectacular. I not only had a panoramic view of the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls, but I could also see most of the city of Niagara Falls as well. During the day, the mist rose from Horseshoe Falls and created multiple rainbows, while at night, both the American and Canadian Falls were illuminated with frequently changing colors.

Located just 100 yards from the edge of the water, Embassy Suites is the closest hotel to Niagara Falls, towering over the brink of the falls. It is conveniently connected directly to the incline railway that we used to make our way down to the Fallsview tourist area where many of the attractions and restaurants are located.

The hotel offered a complimentary breakfast and an evening reception with free drinks and snacks. The hotel also has an indoor pool, entertainment room, and fitness center.

I didn’t even have to leave the hotel for a great meal and a view of the falls since there is The Keg Restaurant on the ninth floor, which serves perfectly cooked steak and seafood. There is also a TGI Fridays Restaurant and sports bar in the hotel on the ground floor.

Pro Tips: Higher floors don’t necessarily offer a better view of the falls, however, they do provide a better view of the city of Niagara Falls. Be certain to make a reservation for a window table in The Keg restaurant to enjoy the illuminated falls with constantly changing colors and themes.

2. Sheraton Fallsview Hotel

Sheraton Fallsview Hotel is conveniently located across from the falls and is directly connected to Casino Niagara and the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark.

The hotel features large windows in every room and at night you can see the falls’ illumination. The main Horseshoe Falls are obscured by trees. They have an onsite spa and fitness center to use when you are done with all of the nearby attractions, including the Hornblower cruise, Journey Behind the Falls, and maybe even the zipline.

Fallsview Restaurant, located on the rooftop, offers panoramic views of the falls and prepares meals with fresh local produce including fish, vegetables, and Niagara wines.

Pro Tip: There are other hotels with a better view of the American and Canadian falls from your room, however, this is your best bet for convenience.

3. Niagara Falls Marriott On The Falls

The Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls was recently renovated. The guestrooms and suites are modern and many Fallsview rooms and suites have oversized picture windows affording panoramic views of Niagara Falls.

Milestones on the Falls Restaurant is located on the mezzanine level of the hotel and is open for lunch or dinner with an international menu. With a direct view of Niagara Falls, your meal will be that much more enjoyable.

Pro Tip: There are two Marriotts in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Book Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls to be closest to the falls. Although the Burning Springs Spa and Thermal Pools are located in the sister Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Spa close by, you can only use the spa and thermal pools at a cost.

4. Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa

Not be confused with the Marriott on the Falls above, this one is a 10-minute walk to the Fallsview Casino. All of the rooms overlook Niagara Falls or the river. Choose carefully if you want a full view of Niagara Falls.

The hotel includes an indoor pool, spa tub, and a steam room as well as the Burning Springs Spa and Thermal Pools — a full-service spa for massages, body treatments, and facials. You can reserve a Hotel Spa Package, book an appointment, or purchase a Day Pass.

While there is a range of restaurants in the hotel to choose from, if you are hankering for steak, seafood, or burgers, Morton’s Grille offers them all. Enjoy a delicious meal while taking in a spectacular view of the Canadian falls.

5. Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel & Suites

The Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel & Suites comprises of three towers and 1,000 rooms and suites. With several suite and room categories, if a view of the falls is a dealbreaker, select accommodations with the view of your choice. Choose from a U.S. Fallsview, Canadian/U.S. Fallsview, or Premium Canadian/U.S. Fallsview.

The hotel is directly connected to the Fallsview Casino Resort via a glass-enclosed walkway. On the 17th floor, you will find an infinity pool with amazing views of Niagara Falls, a family pool, a splash pad, and a fitness center.

The hotel features dining options for all tastes at the Brasa Brazilian Steakhouse, Corso, Family Style Italian, and the rooftop Watermark Fallsview Restaurant located on the 33rd floor with floor-to-ceiling views of Horseshoe Falls.

Pro Tip: Select your room or suite type carefully so you have the best view of the falls from your bedroom. Order room service and watch the falls’ illumination from your bed.

6. DoubleTree Fallsview Resort & Spa By Hilton

If you are traveling with kids or just want to be away from the crowds, you might want to consider the DoubleTree Fallsview Resort & Spa by Hilton .

The Fallsview area, the casino, and the Clifton Hill amusement area are just a 10-minute walk away.

Although the word “Fallsview” is in the name, be aware that only the top floors have partial views of the falls. Connecting rooms are available.

I have stayed at this hotel and found it welcoming and warm. Buchanans Steak and Seafood serves hand-cut steaks, seafood, and pasta along with local Niagara VQA wines and beers. When you’re not out touring, take a break in the indoor pool, fitness center, and spa.

Pro Tip: Check to confirm that the room you booked does indeed have a view of the falls.

7. Tower Hotel

The Tower Hotel is a quirky hotel in Niagara Falls with an interesting history. Originally built as a restaurant and tourist attraction, it was converted into a 42-room boutique hotel in 2005. It is located just 500 yards from the falls and one block from the Niagara Fallsview Casino.

The rooms are understated and have floor-to-ceiling windows with great views of the falls. For dining, an IHOP is on the property as well as the Sky Fallsview Steakhouse.

Staying at a hotel with a panoramic view of Niagara Falls from the comfort of your room or suite is an unforgettable experience both during the day and at night when the falls are illuminated.

In Niagara Falls, you will find hotels to suit most preferences and budgets. Remember to book early for the best choice of rooms with the best views of the falls.

Best Driving Vacations 2024: Go on the ultimate full-circle adventure around Lake Erie

Highlights include beaches, wineries, history and a stop in ontario to admire the natural wonder of niagara falls..

Horseshoe Falls, one of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls, lies predominantly in Canada

Today we continue on our journey highlighting four of the best driving destinations from central Ohio.

From a circle tour of “our Great Lake” to the architectural wonders of a modernist sister city three hours away, these extraordinary adventures are wonderful ways to widen your horizons in 2024.

Today's installment is Part 3 of 4 destination packages from Columbus Monthly's annual travel guide. We hope you enjoy.

Part 1: Best Driving Vacations 2024: Explore the Northern Shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Experiencing Lake Erie

Lake Erie was the last Great Lake to be discovered and explored by European adventurers. Don’t make their mistake. And if you decide to do some lakefront exploring this year, consider something more than a quick trip to Cedar Point or Put-in-Bay .

Sure, Ohio’s lakeshore is packed with fun and interesting destinations. But three other states and the Canadian province of Ontario also share the Lake Erie shoreline. A multiday international circle tour of our Great Lake offers something for every traveler, including wineries, history, city lights, natural delights, beaches and fun in, on or next to the water.

From Columbus, a complete circle tour of the lake requires at least 12 hours of driving in total. So allow three or four days for a leisurely circumnavigation with plenty of stops along the way.

Of course, it doesn’t matter which direction you circle the lake, but assuming your coin flip demands “counterclockwise,” a good first stop from Columbus is Ohio’s Grand River Valley wine region east of Cleveland.

The region, which includes the Vines & Wine trail in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties, takes advantage of a lake-influenced microclimate to grow a wide variety of grapes, especially American-European hybrids that allow production of some tasty and sophisticated vintages. Several good lodging options in the area, including some at the wineries, also offer a good choice for a first night’s stay, especially after a few tastings.

Part 2: Best Driving Vacations 2024: Take a Battlefield Tour of Pennsylvania and Maryland

Pennsylvania’s Presque Isle State Park is a large, sandy peninsula that juts into the lake, forming a natural barrier protecting the harbor at the city of Erie and featuring beaches, nature trails and plenty of room for stretching your legs before the next segment of the journey. Buffalo, New York, is a better travel destination than its reputation might suggest, at least if you visit after the last of the winter’s lake-effect snow has melted. The city has a number of sites associated with famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright , including the Martin House , one of Wright’s great achievements in Prairie-style architecture.

Niagara Falls may be a cliche, but it’s a magnificent, awe-inspiring one. Cross the border into Canada for the best views of the natural wonder and the best places to spend the night.

Remember, you’ll need a current passport to make the international crossing. (You don’t have a passport ? What are you waiting for?) Driving along the northern shore of Lake Erie reveals a stretch of lovely farms and orchards dotted by a series of lakeside towns, each seemingly more charming than the last. Port Stanley, Leamington, Kingsville, Amherstberg and others offer pleasant waterfront business districts with shopping, cozy bed and breakfasts, historic sites and restaurants and diners often featuring local and scrumptious lake-caught perch.

Point Pelee National Park is situated on and around a natural point that sticks out far into the lake. It’s a prime spot for watching the migrating birds that use it as a jumping-off point before flying across the lake every spring. (And if you walk out to the very tip of the ever-shifting sandy-stony point, and pocket the last pebble above the waterline, you’ll have the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland as a souvenir.)

Lake-rambling gamblers can, of course, play in the casinos of Toledo or Cleveland, but why not give the slots and tables a try at Caesars Windsor , across the border from Detroit (which has several casinos of its own)? The view of the Detroit skyline is quite lovely from Windsor. Plus, there’s something a bit exotic about placing a bet with colorful Canadian currency. And every $100 Canadian lost is only $75 American — so you’re already ahead!

Toledo is another town that doesn’t get its tourism props, but be sure to stop by the National Museum of the Great Lakes at the Toledo Maritime Center on the Maumee River near downtown. The center has many great exhibits about all of the Great Lakes, including their natural history, commercial activity, shipwrecks, lighthouses and much more. Visitors can also tour the retired coal ship Col. James M. Schoonmaker, once the largest freighter on the lakes.

From Toledo, a traveler can call it a tour and head south on U.S. 23 toward central Ohio, or continue along the lake to more familiar Ohio stops such as Port Clinton , Put-in-Bay, Sandusky and on to Cleveland.

Or you might just be tempted to turn around and try the drive in the other direction.

Where to Stay Along the Way

The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake is a great place to stay while exploring Ohio wine country, and even offers a shuttle to and from several area wineries. Stays range from about $110 per night. Many hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario, offer magnificent views, such as at the Hilton Fallsview , with rates for view rooms beginning at less than $150 per night. Lake Erie’s north shore has many cozy inns and B&Bs, including the Hallmark-cute Kettle Creek Inn in Port Stanley, with rooms beginning about $100 per night. thelodgeatgeneva.com , niagarafallshilton.com , kettlecreekinn.com

Canada’s first total solar eclipse since 1979 expected to draw 1 million to Niagara Falls

THOROLD, Ontario – Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to witness the upcoming total solar eclipse at one of North America's natural wonders for the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Niagara Falls is in the direct path of totality, and the town is enthusiastically preparing for this event.

Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley has issued a state of emergency for the region, saying it's for the safety and well-being of residents and visitors around the dramatic waterfall situated along the Canadian - U.S. border and to protect critical infrastructure. The proactive measure will provide the area with additional resources to handle any potential scenarios that may arise.

"We will be ready to shine," Bradley said of Canada's first total solar eclipse since 1979.

Residents in Niagara have been advised to prepare for the crowds and long lines during the upcoming eclipse. They have also been warned to fill up gas tanks, get groceries and run necessary errands beforehand. Additionally, most schools in the region will be closed.

According to Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, he anticipates that the eclipse will draw the largest crowd ever seen on the Canadian side of the falls, Reuters reports . Some hotel rooms showcasing the falls' view have been priced at around $1,620 USD.

Niagara Parks and Local Municipalities Announce Traffic Management and Safety Plan for Upcoming Total Solar Eclipse

March 25, 2024

Niagara Parks

  • Road closures will be in place across Niagara Parks properties, the City of Niagara Falls and Town of Fort Erie on Monday, April 8
  • Traffic delays expected, guests advised to plan ahead for the upcoming total solar eclipse
  • All road closures are at the discretion of police and could be adjusted as required
  • Parking lots available throughout the destination including at Rapidsview Parking Lot with a dedicated WEGO Shuttle to the Falls
  • Access to boat launches will be limited on Monday, April 8

Niagara Falls, ON – In anticipation of high visitation levels in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie with guests traveling to the area to view the upcoming total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, a road closure plan will be implemented to reduce challenges due to vehicular congestion and increase the safety of pedestrians.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, Niagara Falls and the Town of Fort Erie will be directly in the path of totality to experience a total solar eclipse around 3:18 p.m. The once-in-a-lifetime celestial event is expected to bring large amounts of people to the region for the unique chance to view one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomenon taking place over another – Niagara Falls. For more information about events and programming related to the eclipse, please visit niagaraparks.com/eclipse .

The Niagara Parks Police Service (NPPS) is continuing to work with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), local emergency services, municipalities and other stakeholders, to develop and implement a robust and integrated safety plan to support the expected influx of people to the region and particularly Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. As part of this planning, a series of road closures will be in place throughout the day of the eclipse.

City of Niagara Falls

On Monday, April 8, 2024, in the City of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Parkway will be closed to vehicular traffic from Queen Street to Fraser Hill, beginning at 12 p.m. until 12 a.m. midnight, coinciding with the concert in Queen Victoria Park that afternoon and evening and the fireworks planned for 10 p.m. Clifton Hill from Victoria Avenue to Falls Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 12 p.m. noon until 12 a.m. midnight, along with Murray Street from the Niagara Parkway to Fallsview Boulevard.

For information concerning alternative access and parking for the businesses and properties within the road closure area, please contact the respective businesses to inquire. Access to Niagara Parks’ Falls Parking Lot will continue from the south.

Town of Fort Erie

Road closures are also planned for the Town of Fort Erie on Monday, April 8, beginning at 8 a.m. The south Niagara Parkway (Niagara Boulevard) will be closed in both directions from Central Avenue to Dominion Road, as well as Dominion to Albert Street. As a reminder, the south Niagara Parkway remains closed from Netherby Road to Townline Road (detour in place), due to construction on the Black Creek Bridge.

All road closures will be at the discretion of the Niagara Parks Police Service and Niagara Regional Police Service and timing may be adjusted as required.

Parking and Transportation

Guests are advised to plan for the road closures and anticipated traffic delays by preparing to park and walk or take public transit to their preferred viewing location for the solar eclipse. There are a number of parking lots throughout Niagara Parks properties and the City of Niagara Falls, including Niagara Parks’ Rapidsview Parking Lot (located on Upper Rapids Boulevard) with a WEGO shuttle to Table Rock Centre at the brink of the Falls. The Falls Incline Railway will operate on an extended schedule to transport guests from the upper Fallsview area to Table Rock Centre. For more information about parking and transportation at Niagara Parks, visit niagaraparks.com/parking .

Public Transit

With the expected traffic congestion and gridlock both into and throughout the destination, guests are encouraged to consider taking public transit such as the WEGO Bus Service and GO Transit into Niagara Falls.

Niagara Parks’ WEGO Green Line will be rerouted during the road closures and will include a WEGO shuttle from Rapidsview to Table Rock, as well as WEGO bus service to transport guests traveling into the destination on GO Transit. GO and WEGO combination tickets can be purchased. As well, GO Transit will be providing special event service on Monday, April 8. Click here for more information.

WEGO Red line and Blue line will move to reduced routing due to the road closures. Service delays and disruptions should be expected for any routes travelling through the tourism area. For up to the minute bus arrival information please download and refer to the “TRANSIT APP”.

Boat Launches

Aligning with direction across the region and under guidance of the Niagara Parks Police Service, Niagara Parks will be closing access to all public boat launches on its property on Monday, April 8. The City of Niagara Falls Welland River (Chippawa) boat launch will also be closed to the public on Monday, April 8. Only emergency services will have access to the launch.

Guest Planning Considerations

In addition to parking and transportation, there are a number of other tips to consider for guests planning to view the solar eclipse in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie:

  • Looking directly at the sun during an eclipse without designated viewing glasses (ISO 12312-2 international standard) can cause serious damage such as partial or complete loss of eyesight.
  • Niagara Parks will have a limited supply of viewing glasses at certain locations; however, it is recommended that guests bring their own to avoid disappointment.
  • While the road closures are planned for Monday, April 8, increased traffic congestion in and around the Niagara region is expected to begin on Friday, April 5 and build throughout the weekend.
  • The expected traffic congestion and gridlock could impact guest movement and access to supplies and amenities; all guests should be prepared and have a full gas tank, extra water and food.
  • Weather can be unpredictable by the Falls and can change quickly.
  • If cell signal does get overwhelmed, it is possible that electronic pay systems may be unavailable – guests should plan to bring cash if needed.
  • Niagara Parks does not permit tents or shade structures of any kind throughout the Queen Victoria Park area (Clifton Hill to Kingsbridge Park).

Canada's Niagara Region declares state of emergency ahead of total solar eclipse

Saturday, 30 Mar 2024

OTTAWA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Canada's Niagara Region declared a state of emergency as it prepares for an influx of visitors for next month's total solar eclipse, local media reported Friday.

The region said the state of emergency is a proactive step to ensure it is prepared to accommodate the "once-in-a-lifetime event," according to CTV News.

Declaring a state of emergency would strengthen the tools the region has at its disposal to safeguard the health and safety of residents and visitors and protect the critical infrastructure in any scenario that might arise, the report said.

Niagara Falls has been identified as one of the best places in the world to watch the solar eclipse on April 8 since it is located in the path of totality.

The mayor of Niagara Falls, Jim Diodati, said that up to one million visitors are expected to come to the region to watch the eclipse, CTV News reported.
