Supposedly, this is the most equipment that any band has ever tried to put onstage here, explains Nickelback tour manager/FOH engineer Kevin Zaruk. Standing
By Robert Hanson
“Supposedly, this is the most equipment that any band has ever tried to put onstage here,” explains Nickelback tour manager/FOH engineer Kevin “Chief” Zaruk. Standing on the balcony of San Francisco’s historic Warfield Theater, Zaruk motions toward several mammoth stacks of Marshall and Mesa cabinets and an intricate array of risers and stairs that provide multiple mic positions for lead singer/guitarist Chad Kroeger. “We weren’t even sure we were going to have enough power until about a half hour before soundcheck,” monitor engineer Mark “Sparky” McNeill adds. “We had nothing all day, and then all of a sudden, someone yelled ‘power up,’” he says with a laugh.
Two years ago, no one had really heard of Nickelback; lately, it’s difficult to go anywhere without hearing Nickelback’s signature single “How You Remind Me.” The band’s sudden ascent from Canadian upstarts to their current status as MTV darlings has been a whirlwind ride for both the band and their spry crew, some of whom have been with the band from the start. Zaruk, who had worked with some opening acts on recent Mötley Crüe and Kid Rock outings, did his first tour with Nickelback in 2000 — a tour that began as an opening slot with KISS and turned into a 14-month trial-by-fire.
“We did something like 256 shows that year,” recalls Zaruk. “So we just toured non-stop. And after that, we went back home, had a month off and recorded a new record. And I helped out in the studio, just because I knew their sound so well. And then ‘How You Remind Me’ blows up, and we went from one bus and three crew guys to four semis, four buses and 33 crew guys. So, definitely, things have changed.”
ONE SIZE FITS ALL
For the larger theaters and clubs that the band is hitting on this tour, Zaruk and systems tech Jack Saurez designed a system that can be easily scaled to fit a variety of venues. The main rig consists of V-DOSC, dV-DOSC enclosures and Electrotec subs with BSS 366 crossovers and Klark Teknik DM 3600 EQs — all supplied by Electrotec. The crew typically flies 12 V-DOSC cabinets a side with additional Arc and dV-DOSC sidefill and frontfill. But at the San Francisco gig, which posed a few technical challenges, they were only using six V-DOSC cabinets a side, with one stacked on top of the subs.
“This is an unusual venue because you’re not allowed to set up [the FOH compound] on the floor,” explains Saurez. “So you have to set up upstairs, which is kind of cramped. It’s difficult to mix here because you’re as close to the P.A. as you could possibly be. I like to be farther away. That way, I can reference the back of the room and make sure it’s really clear in the back. So, it’s a little different here.”
Zaruk and Saurez, who share responsibilities at FOH, work on a 48-input Midas XL4 console. The main vocal mic — singer/guitarist Kroeger’s Shure Beta 58 — is routed though a Neve compressor and various multi-effects. “Chad’s favorite, actually, is the Beta 58,” Saurez explains. “We’re trying a couple of things out, like a Neumann, which he’s using right now on the bus and in the studio, and he seems to like it. But he really likes the real crisp sound that the 58 has, and we’ve tried every other mic and he does not like it. That’s his favorite.”
“I use a Line 6 POD on two songs,” Zaruk adds, “and it adds a cool effect. The TC 2290 is my favorite delay of all time. Almost every song has delay on it, even if you can’t notice it, like 50 ms on guitar. On almost the whole set, there is 100 ms of delay on the vocal. But I like it because you can’t notice it, but you notice it if it’s not there. It just thickens it up without someone going, ‘Wow, there is an obvious effect on it.’ Chad likes a lot of effects on certain songs; you’ll notice a lot of delays will come in and out. I like it. It gives you something different than the CD.”
In addition to a massive array of Marshall and Mesa guitar cabinets, which are miked with a combination of Sennheiser MD 409s and Shure SM57s, there is also a Fender Twin and a Vox positioned offstage that are miked with another pair of 57s. On the bass, the Mesa cabinets are miked with a MD 421 (with wet and dry DI lines) and patched through a BSS 402 and 902.
The miking scheme for the drum kit includes an SM91 and a Beta 52 on kick, SM56 on snare top, SM57 on snare bottom, SM56 on second snare, Beta 98s on toms, Audio-Technica 4050 overheads, and SM81s on the hi-hat and on cymbals. Drawmer gates are used on the kick, snares and toms with a TCL 100 on the snare top. Other outboard gear of note include a Yamaha SPX 900, Eventide H3000 and some PCM 80s.
“This has been pretty interesting,” Zaruk concludes. “The Canadian tour was all arenas, so every day it was the same setup. On this, one day we’re doing an outdoor festival for 20,000 people, and the next we’re here, doing a club for 2,200. You’re really challenging yourself and your ears; you have to be on it. Sometimes on an arena tour, I think you can get lazy because you know what the room is going to sound like. Here, it’s challenging; one day you put it up and it sounds like the CD, and the next you never stop trying to take out certain frequencies. I like the challenge and the fact that it keeps you on your toes.”
A DREAM GIG
Monitor engineer McNeill came to Nickelback after mixing monitors for Everclear. “It was actually the very first tour I ever did a year-and-a-half ago, and Nickelback was our opening act,” explains McNeill. “I got to know their crew, and went right from one to the other.”
McNeill manages a Heritage 3000 console with 32 inputs feeding into the bandmembers’ four IEM mixes, all reproduced via custom molds from Ultimate Ears fed by Shure PSM 700 wireless systems and beltpacks. The only onstage speakers are a pair of 18-inch subs positioned on the drum riser. McNeill’s “very basic” setup routes the two main vocal channels though a pair of Summit compressors, with the two bass DI lines run though a set of BSS 402s and 404s. Most of the other compressors and gates in McNeill’s rack, originally intended for bass and drum channels, he has since bypassed at the request of individual bandmembers.
“All of the individual mixes are pretty much what you would expect, except for the bass player’s,” says McNeill. “The drummer is the only one I do anything in stereo for; it’s all panned how he would see it. He takes everything really loud. The bass player takes kick, hi-hats, rides, toms, bass and that’s it. No guitars, no vocals, nothing — it’s kind of strange to listen to it. And the guitar players have their guitar, their vocal, a little of the other vocal and little bit of everything else.
“This is pretty much the dream gig,” McNeill continues. “Everyone in the band and the crew are cool, and they pretty much encourage you to party and have fun. I’ve also learned a lot from my monitor tech Greg about getting better levels with the belt packs and things like that. It’s been a great learning experience.”
2002 will certainly be a busy year for the entire Nickelback crew. The band is already committed to dates that will have them on the road until the holidays.

Nickelback Reflects on How Far They’ve Come: ‘We Just Didn’t Quit on Ourselves’

It’s been over five years since Nickelback released a new album, but one of Canada’s biggest rock exports has finally returned with Get Rollin’ — and its ’70s-styled album cover with a beach-bound van and spray-painted title certainly belies the classic-rock touches within the grooves.
Nickelback to Be Inducted Into Canadian Music Hall of Fame at 2023 Juno Awards
Trending on Billboard
Brothers Chad and Mike Kroeger (frontman-guitarist and bassist, respectively) sat down with Billboard to discuss Get Rollin’ , their maturation through the years, unexpected cover songs and a forthcoming band documentary. Chad also has recently been correcting the perpetual mispronunciation of the siblings’ last name — it actually sounds like “Kruger.” (A different gaffe regarding the band generated some lighthearted headlines earlier this year.)
Some songs here indicate a bit of heartache, like “Tidal Wave” and “Standing in the Dark,” and then “Steel Still Rusts” and “Horizon” give the vibe of searching for something and feeling displaced. Are these related to people whom you know?
Was “Steel Still Rusts” inspired by a specific person that you know?
Chad Yeah, 100%. Our first bodyguard. Him telling us these stories about being in conflict overseas and missing the birth of his children and all of these different things. Some really, really unpleasant things that would keep you up at night. Then, coming back, he remembers standing on the corner — I think he was in San Diego — and he looked down and still had sand from the desert on his boots. He was still wearing his fatigues. He said just looking over to Starbucks and then looking down at what you just brought back from a war zone that’s still on your feet is a little bizarre.
It was the stories that he would tell me … and [him not getting] the best treatment when he got home. And I’m not talking about Vietnam, but just trying to get help from [Veterans Affairs]. Just a ton of nightmarish stuff … It was eye-opening and jaw-dropping at the same time.
Mike Kroeger You did a really, really good job with that song, Chad. The lyrics and the way you wrote that — it still gets me every time I listen to it, really. Honestly, it’s a real gut punch for me because I know the guy, I know that story, and you put it so well.
Chad Thank you.
The band wrote a lot more party-hearty and decadent songs back in the day, and that has diminished over time. In the setlist now are fewer songs concerned with sex, and more songs like these new tracks we’re discussing. Was this a conscious choice?
But yeah, you get to a certain age where … I’m 47 years old, and there’s certain things that you just don’t want to see a 47-year-old dude sing onstage. So the subject matter has definitely changed. There’s moments where I look over at [guitarist] Ryan [Peake] when he has to harmonize with certain lines. He’s got a daughter, and I just watch him squirm. He gets so squeamish when he has to sing some of this stuff, and I just think it’s so funny.
You did a shredding cover of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” in 2020 with guitarist Dave Martone, and last year, you collaborated on a sea shanty rendition of “Rockstar,” complete with a sailor-inspired TikTok clip. Who was doing what drugs when you came up with these ideas?
Mike ( Laughs .)
Chad The shanty thing came through our band assistant, Brad, and he found these guys called The Lottery Winners on TikTok. I think it was just the guitar player initially. … Brad’s like, “Dude, we have to reach out to this guy and just say, ‘Would you be interested in doing this with all of us?’ And really lean into this and have some fun with it.”
Mike “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” we had sitting around as an idea for a while that didn’t get fully finished and was just waiting in the wings. When we decided to go for it, before we moved forward with it, we reached out to Charlie Daniels himself to send him the rough idea to hear it and get his approval. And he actually did approve of it. He heard it and said he liked it. He was alive when we did it, and he passed [in 2020] before we released it, so he didn’t get to hear the final version of it, unfortunately.
Mike, your family moved from Hawaii to Los Angeles before the pandemic. Your son wants to make music . What was it like to make that transition?
Mike At first, I was kind of curious how it was going to go. Because when we lived in Canada, we lived in the country, way out in a place not unlike Chad’s place. It was not a short drive to everything. You’re apart from everything. Then when we moved to Hawaii, we lived in out-of-the-way country places, too. So, moving to the Hollywood Hills, I was bracing for some kind of culture shock because it is Hollywood. It’s still weird to say that I live here.
Yesterday when I walked my dog, I saw a deer from my house, so it’s not exactly the concrete jungle. We got coyotes, we got deer, we got owls. We got all that stuff here. I think it’s awesome. We’re in this little pocket of nature that’s really nice, and we can just shut the door and hide out here, and if we want to see what the big, scary world looks like, we go out there.
The band has been working on a documentary for a few years. How is it going to differ from what we’ve seen from you in interviews and onstage? What types of revelations can we expect?
Mike The house that we didn’t grow up in. ( Laughs .)
Chad Yeah, that I was rarely at. I think I left when I was 14 and moved out for a while. But we go back to our hometown [of Hanna], and then we play a gig there, and we filmed it. But it’s with our old singer, Scott [Holman], and then we got up and played like three songs. It wasn’t really supposed to be about us playing Nickelback songs. It was about us being back in the old iteration of the band in the early ’90s. We just had a camera crew follow us for about four and a half years and film all kinds of stuff. I think they did a really good job.
Mike There’s some really cool moments of frankness in there that you’re not going to get in this interview. ( Group laughter .) I’m sorry.
After being in this band and living this life since 1995, is there any major life lesson you can impart to fans? Any motto you have?
Mike If I can be indulged to speak on behalf of Nickelback here, I think the motto is that the experience that we’ve had, our best move was just to never stop. The thing we did that I think has brought us to this point is that we just didn’t quit on ourselves, and I think that’s something that a lot of people do. They give up on themselves and quit on themselves. I don’t know if our fans just started to like our music or if they just gave up because we just kept pounding until they were going to like it.
Chad You’re going to like us, goddamn it! Whether you like it or not, you’re going to like us!
Mike One thing they call it in Canada is stick-to-itiveness — just keep staying on the path, keeping your eyes down range, and don’t stop moving forward.

About Nickelback Named the “most successful rock band of the decade” by Billboard in 2009, Nickelback is one of the most commercially viable and important acts of the past two decades. The four-piece, comprised of Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake and Daniel Adair, is globally celebrated for their career defining and award-winning hits including “How You Remind Me,” “Photograph,” “Far Away” and “Rockstar” which all held top spots on the Billboard 100. Their success includes worldwide sales of more than 50-million units, solidifying their status as one of the top-selling acts of all time and the second best-selling foreign act in the U.S., in the 2000’s decade, behind only The Beatles. Their inescapable and irresistible smash “How You Remind Me” was named Billboard’s ‘Top Rock Song of the Decade’. It was the number-one most played song on U.S. radio (any format) in the 2000’s decade according to Nielsen Soundscan, with over 1.2 million spins.
Amongst all of these accolades, they’ve also been named Billboard’s “Top Rock Group of the Decade” and received nine Grammy Award nominations, three American Music Awards, a World Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, twelve JUNO Awards, seven MuchMusic Video Awards, and have been inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame (2007). With more than 23 chart-topping singles and fans spanning the globe, Nickelback boasts twelve consecutive sold-out world tours, playing to well over 10-million diehard and adoring fans. In March 2023 Nickelback will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the JUNO Awards.

About Brantley Gilbert
With back-to-back Platinum albums and a grassroots following millions strong, Brantley Gilbert’s music has been shared, covered and adopted as the soundtrack to Saturday night and Sunday morning by audiences around the world. The Georgia native who started as the defiant life-of-the-party can still go ‘til sunrise, but he’s also emerged as something far greater: the leader of a massive tribe of hard-working, fun-loving believers for whom electric guitar-shredding, rapping, and twang can go hand-in-hand-in-hand. They call themselves the BG Nation, and when the BG Nation watches Gilbert on a stage, they don’t just see a star. They see themselves. Seven No. 1 hits punctuate his career: “Country Must be Country Wide,” “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do,” CMA Awards Song of the Year nominee “Dirt Road Anthem,” “My Kinda Party,” RIAA 5x Platinum-certified “Bottoms Up,” “One Hell of an Amen” and collaboration with Lindsay Ell “What Happens In A Small Town.” Gilbert’s landmark record Just As I Am clinched the 2014 American Music Award for Favorite Country Album. Earning praise from the New York Times , NPR, American Songwriter , and more, Gilbert has mined a rich vein of conflict between the party and the pew on all of his albums. Instead of toiling in limbo, unable to enjoy good times for fear of Judgment Day, Gilbert fully lives––rowdy friend, man of faith, devoted husband, smitten father––just as he is. Gilbert’s new album, So Help Me God , includes his latest single “Heaven By Then” with Blake Shelton and featuring Vince Gill, and is available now.

Brantley Gilbert Teases Upcoming Tour with Nickelback: “It’s Serious Business”
by Cillea Houghton March 6, 2023, 5:35 pm
Brantley Gilbert isn’t mincing words when it comes to his excitement level about being on tour with Nickelback.
Videos by American Songwriter
Though he’s carved a lane for himself in country music with his hard-edged sound, Gilbert has been known to blend hard rock and hip-hop with country music. This has allowed his music to translate to a wider audience, with Gilbert spending the last two months of 2022 out on the road on Five Finger Death Punch’s arena tour. The two acts also teamed up for a cover of blues artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s 1998 single “Blue on Black” in 2019, a cover that also featured Shepherd himself and Queen guitarist Brian May. The multi-genre rendition hit No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
Gilbert is once again stepping into rock territory as the supporting act on Nickelback’s 2023 Get Rollin’ Tour in support of their 2022 album of the same name. Gilbert was first pitched the idea of touring with the “Rockstar” singers through his manager, Aaron Keiser, and was immediately intrigued by the concept.
“Right off the bat [I] was like, ‘This could be cool,'” Gilbert recalls to American Songwriter. “The more conversations we had with their team, it just became a no-brainer.”
Gilbert observes that because they operate in two different genres of music that a sense of competition between the two acts has been eliminated. Gilbert says that Nickelback and their team have been nothing but supportive of Gilbert’s part of the show.
“We’re in such different worlds that I feel like there’s a competitive thing that kind of got washed out, similar as when we were on tour Five Finger Death Punch,” he explains. “That line in the sand’s been blurred a little bit and they’re just super cool guys.”
The “Country Must Be Country Wide” hitmaker is set to release the deluxe edition of his 2022 album, So Help Me God , on April 21. The project features his single, “ Heaven By Then ,” featuring Blake Shelton and Vince Gill, which is currently climbing up the top 30 on country radio. Gilbert says that the timing of the Nickelback tour aligns with the latest chapter of his career, promising that fans won’t be disappointed by the show they have in store.
“Right now, we felt that we were at a chapter in our careers, and I think they’re in a similar place, where we really want to deliver–it’s almost like a second go around I think for them and for us,” he expresses, describing the show as a “powder keg.”
“It really is going to be something that I think people are going to show up and [be] like, ‘Holy shit, I was hoping it was going to be good.’ … I’m not just saying this because I’m on this tour, this thing’s going to leave a damn crater wherever it touches down. It’s serious business.”
Nickelback and Gilbert embark on the Get Rollin’ Tour on June 12 in Nickelback’s native Canada in Quebec. They will traverse across Canada and the U.S. until August 30, when it wraps at UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York.

Universal Music Group Creates ‘The Core Records’ with Nickelback Manager Kevin Zaruk
Universal Music Group announces the launch of The Core Records, a global venture led in part by Nickelback manager Kevin Zaruk.
Universal Music Group has announced the launch of The Core Records led by Kevin “Chief” Zaruk and Simon Tikhman (pictured), co-founders of the entertainment and talent management company, The Core Entertainment (TCE). The global label venture will sign and develop new artists, working with UMG’s expansive network of industry-leading labels.
“We love building upon our entrepreneurial culture and are so pleased to welcome Chief and Simon, who have a reputation for identifying some of the industry’s most promising artists,” says Sir Lucian Grainge , UMG Chairman and CEO (pictured center). “We look forward to helping them grow their roster and drive global success for their artists.”
“Our goal has always been to support artists on a global scale by creating new creative and commercial paths,” adds Tikhman. “We’d like to thank Sir Lucian for believing in our vision and for his commitment to developing and supporting artists and entrepreneurs.”
“We’re excited for this next evolution in The Core and honored to work with Sir Lucian and the team at UMG to help us continue to guide artists to develop their careers and brands,” concludes Zaruk. “We’ve had a great time building The Core over the past few years and are excited to create a home for new artists with the incredible resources and support from UMG .”
Tikhman and Zaruk founded TCE in partnership with Live Nation in 2019 as an independent entertainment collective with offices in Nashville and Los Angeles specializing in talent management, innovative business and strategic partnerships, and advancements in the music, technology, and lifestyle industries. In addition to its roster of music talent, TCE develops film and television projects and works with professional athletes.
Before TCE, Chief was integral in creating Nashville-based Big Loud and its hybrid business model. A Vancouver, BC, native, Zaruk began his career as the front of house and tour manager for Nickelback, whom he now manages.
Simon Tikhman is a seasoned entrepreneur who founded Interactive Athlete and Simont Enterprises, investing in multiple tech companies like Robinhood, Glympse, Espresa, Philz Coffe, Exadel, Bach, Zen Wtr, Vision Venture Partners, TikGames, and serving as a managing partner at the Fund by First Access Entertainment.

2023 Canadian Music Hall of Fame recipients, and Diamond-certified selling group Nickelback were named the “most successful rock band of the decade” by Billboard in 2009. Globally celebrated for their career defining and award-winning hits “How You Remind Me,” “Photograph,” “Far Away,” and “Rockstar,” and more, the four-piece comprised of Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger, and Daniel Adair is one of the most commercially viable and important acts of the past two decades. Their success includes worldwide sales of more than 50-million units, solidifying their status as one of the top-selling acts of all time and the second best-selling foreign act in the U.S., in the 2000’s decade, behind only The Beatles. Their inescapable and irresistible smash “How You Remind Me” was named Billboard’s ‘Top Rock Song of the Decade’ and was the number-one most played song on U.S. radio (any format) in the 2000’s according to Nielsen Soundscan, with over 1.2 million spins. Amongst all of these accolades, they’ve also been named Billboard’s “Top Rock Group of the Decade” and received nine Grammy Award nominations, three American Music Awards, a World Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, twelve JUNO Awards, seven MuchMusic Video Awards, and have been inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame (2007) and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (2023). With more than 23 chart-topping singles and fans spanning the globe, Nickelback boasts more than twelve consecutive sold-out world tours, playing to well over 10 million+ diehard and adoring fans. The band wrapped their 53 date North American leg of the Get Rollin’ Tour on October 5th and most recently debuted the documentary Hate To Love: Nickelback at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
About Lottery Winners
Lottery Winners are the working-class underdog story of the year. Their fifth studio album, Anxiety Replacement Therapy, was released on 28 April 2023 and debuted at number 1 in the UK, topping the Official UK Album Charts. It was the 5th highest selling first week album of the year, selling more copies in the UK than U2 and Miley Cyrus. The album has received worldwide critical acclaim and has connected with people in a special way. The album tackles mental illness and ADHD in a biographical, chronological story of personal redemption. Songs like ‘Letter to Myself’, a song written to 12 year old Thom after getting expelled from school and feeling like a misfit, to tell him that everything is going to work out. ‘Worry’, ‘Long Way Down’ and ‘Sertraline’, a love song about an antidepressant, also mark the more troubling parts of the record. As the album progresses, the mood lightens and songs like ‘Not Alone’ and ‘Let Me Down’ provide comfort to Thom’s journey. Concluded with ‘Anxiety Replacement Therapy’, which poetically combines all of the other songs on the album. It truly is the band’s seminal moment. Already previously producing a wealth of star-spangled collaborations of industry greats such as Nickelback, Frank Turner, Sleeper and KT Tunstall, the Lottery Winners’ latest album is setting the bar even higher, with the likes of Shaun Ryder, Boy George and once again Frank Turner gracing the record. The band has received airtime from Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 6, Radio X, Virgin Radio, as well as record of the week and A-list on Absolute Radio. The band had a huge summer playing festival stages including four slots at Glastonbury and are currently on their biggest ever UK tour, finishing at a sold out Manchester Apollo this December.
